- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 29th of July, almost at the end of the month, and today
- 0:19we continue by finishing the last of the days when Moses is
- 0:23going to be unpacking one at a time, those 10 commandments.
- 0:27And he's finishing off not coveting what our neighbour has
- 0:30by talking about not just holding onto or not wanting to
- 0:33hold on to the things that each other have, but in fact giving
- 0:36up what we have and giving it as tithes and offerings to remember
- 0:41that everything we have friends. Yep, even those prized
- 0:44possessions that we worked so hard for and our gifts to us.
- 0:48Yeah, that's what today's about. And then it's going to finish
- 0:50off with Moses appealing, begging, What's the right word?
- 0:56Urging, calling his people to follow God's advice.
- 1:01Because you know what it's like. You know that Israel finds it
- 1:04hard to follow what God has set out for them.
- 1:07So Moses is going to just ask them one more time at the end of
- 1:11these commandments to please, please, please follow them, that
- 1:15everything will go well for them.
- 1:17So let us hear him finish off the last of the commandments and
- 1:22then extol the virtues of these commandments to his people.
- 1:25As we read together Deuteronomy chapter 26,
- 1:39When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you as a
- 1:42special possession, and you have conquered it and settled there.
- 1:46Put some of the first produce from each crop you harvest into
- 1:50a basket and bring it to the designated place of worship, the
- 1:54place the Lord your God chooses for His name to be honoured.
- 1:58Go to the priest in charge at that time and say to him, with
- 2:02this gift I acknowledge to the Lord your God that I have
- 2:05entered the land He swore to our ancestors He would give us.
- 2:10The priest will then take the basket from your hand and set it
- 2:13before the altar of the Lord your God.
- 2:16You must then say in the presence of the Lord your God.
- 2:20My ancestor Jacob was a wandering Aramean who went to
- 2:25live as a foreigner in Egypt. His family arrived few in
- 2:29number, but in Egypt they became a large and mighty nation.
- 2:33When the Egyptians oppressed and humiliated us by making us their
- 2:37slaves, we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors.
- 2:41He heard our cries and saw our hardship, toil, and oppression.
- 2:46So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and
- 2:50powerful arm, with overwhelming terror, and with miraculous
- 2:54signs and wonders. He brought us to this place and
- 2:59gave us this land flowing with milk and honey.
- 3:02And now, O Lord, I have brought you the first portion of the
- 3:06harvest. You have given me from the
- 3:08ground. Then place the produce before
- 3:12the Lord your God and bow to the ground and worship before Him.
- 3:17Afterward, you may go and celebrate because of all the
- 3:20good things the Lord your God has given to you and your
- 3:23household. Remember to include the Levites
- 3:27and the foreigners living among you in the celebration.
- 3:30Every 3rd year you must offer a special tithe of your crops.
- 3:35In this year of the special tithe, you must give your tithes
- 3:38to the Levites, foreigners, orphans and widows so that they
- 3:42will have enough to eat in your towns.
- 3:45Then you must declare in the presence of the Lord your God.
- 3:48I have taken the sacred gift from my house and have given it
- 3:52to the Levites, foreigners, orphans and widows, just as you
- 3:56commanded me. I have not violated or forgotten
- 3:59any of your commands, I have not eaten any of it while in
- 4:03mourning, I have not handled it while I was ceremonially
- 4:07unclean, and I've not offered any of it to the dead.
- 4:11I have obeyed the Lord my God and have done everything you
- 4:14commanded me. Now look down from your holy
- 4:18dwelling place in heaven and bless your people, Israel, and
- 4:23the land you swore to our ancestors to give us, a land
- 4:26flowing with milk and honey. Today the Lord your God has
- 4:33commanded you to obey all these decrees and regulations, so be
- 4:38careful to obey them wholeheartedly.
- 4:42You have declared today that the Lord is your God, and you have
- 4:46promised to walk in His ways and to obey His decrees, commands,
- 4:51and regulations and to do everything He tells you.
- 4:55The Lord has declared today that you are His people, His own
- 5:01special treasure, just as He promised, and that you must obey
- 5:06all His commands. And if you do, He will set you
- 5:11high above all the other nations He has made.
- 5:15Then you will receive praise, honour and renown.
- 5:20He will be a nation that is holy to the Lord your God, just as He
- 5:25promised. Our Father, you are faithful and
- 5:38good to us, just as you promised, and not only good to
- 5:44us, your special possession, but you are good to all your people,
- 5:49people in your nation, people in every nation, people who have
- 5:52chosen you, people who haven't even chosen you.
- 5:56And Lord, we here today in this reading about the way that you
- 5:59care for the foreigners, for the widows, for the orphans, for
- 6:03those who would otherwise be left destitute, and that you in
- 6:08your justice and your grace and your kindness, want everyone to
- 6:13be cared for because everyone is precious to you, even me, even
- 6:17everyone praying this prayer. Our Lord, we thank you that you
- 6:21hold us so lovingly in your heart and that you would be so
- 6:27kind as to pour your provision on us.
- 6:31We are grateful for you and all that you give us, all that you
- 6:35are, and for this decadent love that you just pour on us in our
- 6:40lives. And nothing says that more than
- 6:43your gift of Jesus to us. So we thank you for Jesus, and
- 6:46we pray this all in His name, Amen.
