- 0:00Once, a rich and powerful juggernaut of a family would
- 0:04slowly be turned into ghosts as their once blessed lives
- 0:09seemingly became infected by some sort of curse.
- 0:13Do their spirits still wander the halls of this historic
- 0:16mansion? And can we decipher the
- 0:19paranormal force that seemingly destroyed their lives before it
- 0:23affects anyone else? This is the untold story of the
- 0:28Haunted Limp Mansion located in St.
- 0:31Louis, MO. And this tale intertwines the
- 0:35spirits of the past with the mysteries of the present.
- 0:52To tell this story properly, I must first introduce to you just
- 0:56who the Limp family was, what they were about, and just what
- 1:00happened to them. So let us start at the
- 1:02beginning. The Limp family began with Johan
- 1:05Adam Limp, who arrived in St. Louis, MO, from Aischweig,
- 1:09Germany, in 1838. Shortly after his arrival, he
- 1:14would build a small grocery store at what is now Del Mar and
- 1:17Six streets, where he sold common household items,
- 1:21groceries and homemade beer. The light golden lager was a
- 1:25welcome change from the darker beers that were sold at the
- 1:28time. The recipe handed down by his
- 1:30father became so popular that just two years later he gave up
- 1:35the grocery store venture and decided to build a small brewery
- 1:39instead. In 1840, the brewery was close
- 1:43to where the Golden Arch stands today.
- 1:46Limp first sold his beer in a pub attached to the brewery,
- 1:50introducing Saint Louis to its first logger.
- 1:54Before long, Limp found that the brewery was too small to handle
- 1:58both production and storage, and found a limestone cave South of
- 2:03the city limits. The Cave, which was located at
- 2:07the presentday corner of Cherokee and Dema Neal Place,
- 2:11could be kept cool by chopping ice from the nearby Mississippi
- 2:15River and depositing it inside, providing the perfect conditions
- 2:20for the loggering process to run its course.
- 2:23Thus the Limps Western Brewing Company continued to prosper and
- 2:28by the 1850s had become one of the largest in the city.
- 2:33A millionaire by the time of his death, Adam Limp died on August
- 2:3725th of 1862 and his son William would take over and begin a
- 2:43major expansion of the brewery. He purchased a 5 block area
- 2:47around the storage house on Cherokee above the log ring
- 2:51caves, and in 1864 a new plant was completed there on Cherokee
- 2:56St. continually expanding to meet the product demand.
- 3:01The Limp family would soon come to symbolize both wealth and
- 3:05power, as the Limp brewery controlled the Saint Louis beer
- 3:08market, a position it would maintain until prohibition.
- 3:13In 1868, Jacob Feckhart, William Limp's fatherinlaw, built a
- 3:19mammoth of a house a short distance from the Limp Brewery,
- 3:23and in 1876 William Limp decided to purchase it for his family,
- 3:29utilizing it as both a residence and an auxiliary office.
- 3:34While the home was already impressive, Limp immediately
- 3:37began renovating and expanding the 33 room house into a
- 3:42Victorian showplace, a true showcase of luxury.
- 3:48As part of this renovation, a tunnel was built from the
- 3:51basement of the mansion and through the caves to the
- 3:54brewery, and when mechanical refrigeration became available,
- 3:59parts of the caves were converted for other purposes,
- 4:02including a natural auditorium and a theater.
- 4:05In due time the system would also become host to a large
- 4:09concrete swimming pool with hot water piped in from the brewery,
- 4:13boiling house and later a bowling alley and then a private
- 4:18movie theater would also be integrated and what would
- 4:22eventually become the limp Western brewery.
- 4:25This ever growing venture would be the first beer company to
- 4:28establish Coast to Coast distribution and would also go
- 4:32on to assist in the launching of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and
- 4:36Anheuser Busch. However, underneath this fairy
- 4:40tale existence of a life tucked away in the darkness was
- 4:45something most unfortunate. The Limp family, although highly
- 4:50successful, would begin to experience the first of many
- 4:54tragedies to come. In 1901, William, Senior's
- 4:58favorite son and the heir to the company, would pass at the young
- 5:03age of just 28 years old. Frederick Limp, who had never
- 5:07been the pinnacle of good health, had died from heart
- 5:11failure. His son's death would absolutely
- 5:13devastate William, and following his funeral he began to withdraw
- 5:18from public life. He was never the same.
- 5:22On January the first of 1904, Williams closest friend
- 5:27Frederick Pabst also passed, leaving an ever withdrawn
- 5:32William to struggle running his brewery.
- 5:35Though he still arrived at the office each day, he became very
- 5:39nervous and unsettled. Shortly after these two events,
- 5:44his physical and mental health would start to decline, and on
- 5:48February 13th, 1904, William would leave this world by his
- 5:54own hand. In November of 1904, William
- 5:58Limp Junior took over as the new president of the William J.
- 6:03Limp Brewing Company. Inheriting the family business
- 6:07and vast fortune, he and his wife Lillian began to spend the
- 6:11inheritance at a furious pace. They filled the mansion with
- 6:15servants, spent huge amounts on carriages, clothing, and art,
- 6:21among many other things. Lillian was a beautiful woman
- 6:25who came from a wealthy family herself.
- 6:28She and William Limp Junior had married in 1899, and William J.
- 6:33Limp the Third was born on September 26th of 1900.
- 6:39Before long, Lillian became known as the Lavender Lady
- 6:43because of her fondness for the color.
- 6:45In addition to her lavender attire and accessories, she went
- 6:49so far as to have her carriage horses harnesses dyed lavender
- 6:54as well. In the beginning, Will enjoyed
- 6:57showing off his trophy wife, but Will, born with a silver spoon
- 7:02in his mouth, was used to doing and acting as he pleased.
- 7:07When he began to tire of Lillian, he demanded that she
- 7:10spend her time shopping, allotting her $1000 a day.
- 7:15He gave her an ultimatum that if she didn't spend it, she
- 7:18wouldn't get anymore. In the meantime, Will was busy
- 7:22running the brewery during the day and pursuing all manner of
- 7:26decadent activities during the night, holding lavish parties in
- 7:31The Cave below the mansion. He would bring in numerous
- 7:34prostitutes for entertainment for him and his friends,
- 7:38enjoying the swimming pool, the bowling alley and the free
- 7:42flowing beer. His friends who attended these
- 7:45lavish events were known to enjoy a high time deep below the
- 7:50surface. However, all that debauchery
- 7:54came with consequences. Will shenanigans caught up with
- 7:58him when he sired a son with another woman other than his
- 8:02wife. Strangely, however, today there
- 8:06is no official documentation that this boy ever existed.
- 8:10But rumors that this boy was hidden in the mansion attic for
- 8:14his entire life became prevalent over the years.
- 8:18According to Saint Louis historian Joe Gibbons, when he
- 8:22interviewed a former nanny and a chauffeur who worked at the
- 8:25mansion long ago, both of them verified that the boy did exist
- 8:30and was housed in the attic quarters that also housed the
- 8:33servants rooms. Spawned from Will's philandering
- 8:37with either one of the many prostitutes or a mansion
- 8:41servant. The boy was born with Down
- 8:43syndrome and was considered a total embarrassment to the
- 8:47family. Thus he was hidden away from the
- 8:49world in order to cloak the limp's shame.
- 8:53Finally, William Junior tired of his trophy wife and her nagging
- 8:58from his point of view and filed for divorce in 1908.
- 9:02Why she didn't take this step with all of his goings on could
- 9:06be nothing more than a sign of the times.
- 9:09But the court proceedings surrounding the divorce became a
- 9:12major Saint Louis scandal, with all four St.
- 9:15Louis newspapers devoting extensive front page coverage to
- 9:20the messy affair. The trial opened in February of
- 9:231909 to crowds that flocked to the courthouse each day to
- 9:28witness the drama of tales of violence, drunkenness, ego and
- 9:34excess. Virtually ignoring William's
- 9:37decadent activities. Lillian almost lost custody of
- 9:41William Limp the Third because of a photograph that was
- 9:44presented at the trial of her smoking a cigarette again.
- 9:49Perhaps this was another sign of the times, but in the end she
- 9:53retained custody of their son, but soon retired from the public
- 9:57eye. The only time that she was ever
- 9:59seen wearing anything other than lavender was on the final day of
- 10:03her divorce proceedings, when she appeared entirely in black
- 10:08before the judge. With the divorce, Will's
- 10:11troubles had only just begun. In 1906, nine of the large
- 10:16breweries in the Saint Louis area had combined to form the
- 10:20Independent Breweries Company, creating fierce competition that
- 10:24the Limp Brewery had never faced before.
- 10:28And that very same year, Will's mother would pass of cancer.
- 10:32The lavish spending on both personal luxuries and ridiculous
- 10:36parties has certainly taken their toll on the family
- 10:40fortune, but now the company's profits were continually
- 10:44shrinking. Despite this, however, the limp
- 10:47mansion would be entirely remodeled in 1911 and partially
- 10:52converted into offices for the brewery.
- 10:55At the same time, William allowed the company's equipment
- 10:58to deteriorate, perhaps in order to fund these renovations.
- 11:03When World War One broke out in 1914, the brewery was just a
- 11:08shell of its former self. William would also build a
- 11:12country home on the Merrimack River, to which he increasingly
- 11:16retreated to amidst the ongoing troubles, and during this time
- 11:21he would also, in 1915, remarry. The downturn in profits due to
- 11:27competition would pale in comparison to what was coming,
- 11:31and it arrived in 1919 and it was Prohibition.
- 11:37The individual family members were already wealthy, so there
- 11:41was little incentive to keep the brewery afloat.
- 11:44For a time, though, we'll hoped that Congress would repeal
- 11:47Prohibition, but finally gave up when it simply wasn't happening.
- 11:52Just months after it went into effect, the limp plant would
- 11:56close down without notice. The workers learned of the
- 12:00closing when they came to work one day and found the door shut
- 12:05and the gates locked. And the family misfortune from
- 12:08here would only continue on March 20th, 1920.
- 12:14Elsa Limpwright, William's sister, the wealthiest heiress
- 12:18in Saint Louis, would too breathe her last breath.
- 12:22Just like her father had years before.
- 12:25Elsa was said to have been despondent over her rocky
- 12:27marriage, among many other personal and monetary issues
- 12:32arising after the end of the limps brewing dynasty.
- 12:36William Junior slipped into an all too familiar depression,
- 12:40acting almost exactly like his father.
- 12:43He too became increasingly nervous and erratic, shunning
- 12:47public life and often complaining of ill health.
- 12:52On December 29th, 1922, William Two would exit this world in the
- 12:58very same way and in the very same building his father had 18
- 13:03years previously. Williams brothers Charles and
- 13:07Edwin had long left the family business, seeing as their
- 13:11prospects to run the empire were limited at best.
- 13:15If it all, it seemed like the Limp dynasty had finally come to
- 13:19a bleak end. In 1943, yet another tragedy
- 13:24occurred when William Limph, the third, suddenly passed of a
- 13:27heart attack at the age of 42, the only legitimate son of
- 13:33Williams. Shortly after this took place,
- 13:37his brother Charles would eventually remodel the mansion
- 13:40back into a residence and live in the house along with two
- 13:44servants and the illegitimate child of his brother.
- 13:48Charles too, became an odd figure.
- 13:50As he grew older, he developed a morbid fear of germs, and his
- 13:55obsessive compulsive behavior included wearing gloves at all
- 13:58times to avoid bacteria and constantly washing his hands.
- 14:04It was during this time, shortly following the renovation, that
- 14:08Williams illegitimate son, now in his 30s, would two have his
- 14:13name added to death's roll count.
- 14:16Shortly after his nephew's passing, Charles would become
- 14:19the 4th member of the limp family to breathe his final
- 14:23breath on his own accord. First he took his beloved
- 14:27Doberman into the basement of the mansion.
- 14:30Then climbing the staircase to his room on the 2nd floor, he
- 14:34would go the way of his brother and father.
- 14:38Charles was discovered on May 10th of 1949 by one of his staff
- 14:43still holding a revolver. It also seems that his passing
- 14:48was not so quick. Either he appeared to have tried
- 14:51to descend the stairs or had fallen following what had taken
- 14:56place of the Limp family. Only Edwin, who had long avoided
- 15:01the life that had turned so tragic for the rest of his
- 15:04family, remained. He was known as a quiet,
- 15:08reclusive man who had walked away from the Limp Brewing
- 15:11Company in 1913 to live a peaceful life on a secluded
- 15:17estate in Kirkwood, MO. Edwin passed away quietly of
- 15:22natural causes at the age of 90 and 1970.
- 15:27According to Edwin's last wishes, his Butler burned all
- 15:30the paintings that the limbs had collected throughout his life,
- 15:34as well as a priceless limp family document and their
- 15:38artifacts. These irreplaceable pieces of
- 15:41history vanished and the smoke and embers that very day.
- 15:46The Limp family line ended with Edwin and their final resting
- 15:50place can now be found at the Bella Fontaine Cemetery and a
- 15:55mausoleum bearing their namesake, and although
- 15:58physically there remains sit within its concrete walls, do
- 16:03their ghosts still unhabit their once prosperous estate?
- 16:08After the death of Charles Limp, the mansion was sold and turned
- 16:12into a boarding house along with the nearby neighborhood.
- 16:16And this is where we begin to hear the first haunting tales of
- 16:20the old limp mansion. New residents, upon moving in,
- 16:25quickly began complaining of ghostly knocks and phantom
- 16:29footsteps being heard all throughout the house.
- 16:34Coupling these frightening manifestations, those same
- 16:37residents also began to see spectral apparitions throughout
- 16:42the rooms and halls. People became so frightened that
- 16:46they would typically move out almost as quickly as they had
- 16:49moved in, ultimately leading to the decline and closing of the
- 16:54boarding home. Now in a state of decay.
- 16:57It seemed like the mansion might finally be demolished.
- 17:01However, it would again be purchased in 1975, and the new
- 17:07owner, a man named Richard Pointer, immediately began to
- 17:11renovate, eventually turning the once incredible estate somewhat
- 17:16back to its former glory. It would now become a restaurant
- 17:20and in and they say that spirits that inhabit particularly older
- 17:25buildings and homes really don't like renovations.
- 17:29And whether this stirred up the energy of the place or they
- 17:32simply sensed a new presence within the mansion itself, those
- 17:37very same ghosts would now make themselves very well known, even
- 17:42more so than before. Workers within the house often
- 17:46told stories of apparitions, strange sounds like 1000
- 17:51whispers in their ears, among other things.
- 17:55Their tools too began to vanish and they all had a bone chilling
- 18:00feeling of being watched by eyes that they couldn't see.
- 18:05Frightened by the haunting, many would abandon the job site,
- 18:09never to return. Eventually, though, the
- 18:12renovations would be completed and the eatery and inn would
- 18:17open. Since the restaurant opened,
- 18:20staff members have reported several strange experiences.
- 18:25Again, apparitions appear and then quickly vanish.
- 18:30Voices and sounds come from nowhere, and glasses will often
- 18:35lift off the bar, flying through the air by themselves.
- 18:40On other occasions, doors have said to lock and unlock by
- 18:45themselves. Lights have inexplicately turned
- 18:48on and off of their own free will, and the piano bar often
- 18:54plays when there's no one near it.
- 18:57Could this be the tragically departed souls of the limp
- 19:01family? There are three areas of the old
- 19:04mansion that have had the most activity The stairway, the
- 19:09attic, and what the staff refers to as the Gates of Hell in the
- 19:15basement. It is this area of the basement
- 19:18that used to be the entrance to the caves running below the
- 19:22mansion and the brewery. The attic is said to be haunted
- 19:27by William Junior's illegitimate son, referred to only as the
- 19:32Monkey Face Boy. This poor soul, who was born
- 19:35with Down syndrome, had spent his entire life locked in the
- 19:39attic of the mansion. Strange occurrences are often
- 19:43witnessed on the third level of the mansion as well.
- 19:46The face of the boy has regularly been seen from the
- 19:50street, peeking from small windows of the mansion.
- 19:54Investigators have often left toys in the middle of his room,
- 19:58drawing a circle around them to see if the objects have been
- 20:01moved consistently. When they returned the next day,
- 20:06the toys are found in another location.
- 20:10In the downstairs women's bathroom, which was once William
- 20:13Junior's personal domain and held the first freestanding
- 20:17shower in Saint Louis, many women have reported a man
- 20:22peeking over their stall. One such occasion, a woman
- 20:26emerged from the bathroom returning to the bar.
- 20:30She yelled at the two men that she was there.
- 20:32With that she hoped they got an eyeful.
- 20:36However, the two men quickly denied ever having left the bar,
- 20:40which the bartender verified. The confusion and disbelief must
- 20:45have been palpable, and this ghost is said to be that of the
- 20:50womanizing William Junior in William Limp.
- 20:54Seniors room guests have often reported hearing someone running
- 20:59up the stairs and kicking at the door when William ended himself.
- 21:05William Junior was known to have run up the stairs to his
- 21:08father's room and finding it locked, began to kick the door
- 21:13in order to get to his father. Perhaps this is some sort of
- 21:17residual haunting taking place. Experiences have also taken
- 21:22place outside of the home as well.
- 21:25A tour guide reported hearing the sounds of horses outside the
- 21:28room where William Lim Senior had kept his office.
- 21:32However, when the tour guide looked through the window,
- 21:36nothing was there. This area north of the mansion
- 21:40was now used as a parking lot and was once utilized as a
- 21:44tethering lot for horses. There have also been many
- 21:48paranormal stories told by those who have visited the old Limp
- 21:52mansion over the years. And this is just one of many
- 21:56stories. On Saturday October 9th of 2004,
- 22:02two women who will call Katie and Amy visited the Limp mansion
- 22:07along with Saint Louis historian Joe Gibbons.
- 22:11Joe had spent many years researching the Limp mansion and
- 22:15often gave tours of the end with the permission and cooperation
- 22:19of the owners. This is told from Katie's
- 22:22perspective. Meeting up with Joe at the bar,
- 22:25we settled in for a bit, drinking on a couple of loggers
- 22:29and chatting it up. Afterwards, he began to show Amy
- 22:33and I around the mansion as Joe described an intricate detail,
- 22:38the history of the limp mansion and the land in which the
- 22:41mansion stands on, as well as the many strange occurrences and
- 22:45this now haunted building. While we were on tour, several
- 22:49strange events occurred. The first was when we were
- 22:52standing in the darkened attic. As Joe described the monkey
- 22:56faced boy, I began snapping pictures and during our time
- 23:01within the attic I began to hear a faint whisper like that of a
- 23:06small child from behind me. The whispers happened so fast
- 23:11and alternated from ear to ear. It was like someone was speaking
- 23:15into them simultaneously at close range.
- 23:19I couldn't really make out the voice at first, but it sounded
- 23:23like it was saying help me over and over again.
- 23:28Later in our tour, we ran into another group who was on a
- 23:31different tour, and after a brief discussion, several
- 23:35members of their group would describe having passed a man in
- 23:38the hallway and asked us if we had seen him as well.
- 23:42He was holding a key in his hand, was acting irritated with
- 23:46a large group moving through the hallway.
- 23:49He was said to be pale and older, wearing a white shirt and
- 23:54black pants. No one thought anything of it at
- 23:57the time, believing him to be a member of staff.
- 24:00However, we would find out that there was no such gentleman
- 24:04working or staying at the mansion that night that met that
- 24:08description, though no harm was done and nothing was disturbed
- 24:12in the guest room. The whole experience was very
- 24:15bizarre to say the least, and it's certainly not an experience
- 24:20I will soon forget. Was this the ghost of one of the
- 24:24limp patriarchy, seemingly angry that their space was being
- 24:29intruded upon? This particular case, those
- 24:33involved and their demise certainly prompts more questions
- 24:37than answers. Just what drove so many of them
- 24:40to bring about their own ruination?
- 24:43Could it have been circumstantial stress induced, A
- 24:47genetic predisposition that affected their mental chemistry?
- 24:51Or was it something else, something darker that we simply
- 24:55can't explain? Did the victims of their
- 24:58product, those seemingly caught in the throes of addiction,
- 25:02result in some kind of curse for the family?
- 25:05Did they cut some sort of deal with the devil in order to gain
- 25:09such profound wealth and admiration, only to have the
- 25:13House of Cards fall and the bloodline extinguish?
- 25:17Or could it have been something that dwelled within those caves
- 25:20underneath the mansion? Perhaps an old evil that got
- 25:24disturbed once they're remodeling efforts began to take
- 25:28place? It's truly hard to say because
- 25:31those that could know such things are no longer walking
- 25:35this earth in human form, but perhaps are still walking the
- 25:40earth nonetheless. The Limp Mansion has been
- 25:44featured in a number of magazine articles and newspapers and now
- 25:48attracts ghost hunters and historians from around the
- 25:52country. Today, it still features a bed
- 25:54and breakfast with rooms restored in periodic style, a
- 25:59restaurant featuring fine dining, and a mystery dinner
- 26:02theater. Tours are also still available
- 26:05at the mansion, if you so dare. As previously mentioned, the
- 26:10Limp Family Mausoleum still stands today housing the remains
- 26:14of the family tree known today as the Monkey Face Boy.
- 26:18The unfortunate soul who was born out of wedlock and the very
- 26:22same one that continues to show his presence at the mansion is
- 26:26also buried with the family but on the cemetery plot and marked
- 26:31with only a flat, small marker labeled Limp.
- 26:35A sad ending to once amazing story of success turned tragic,
- 26:39but it just goes to show that one may never truly know what's
- 26:43happening just below the surface.
- 26:46Because behind all that wealth, a smiling face and excess could
- 26:51be nothing but a thread holding the demons at Bay, and all it
- 26:56takes is for them to breach the surface like a creature hiding
- 27:00in a body of water. But what do you think?
- 27:06What caused the family curse? Is the mansion truly haunted or
- 27:11is it superstition? Let me know down at the comments
- 27:14below. I'd also really like to thank
- 27:17you guys so much for watching this new video.
- 27:19Although it is a little different from some of our usual
- 27:22cases, I really enjoy the historical aspects of older
- 27:26stories such as these, so I hope you did too.
