- 0:40A hamster with a blunt penknife a doctor who commentary podcast
- 0:44with me. Dillon and Amy Jo.
- 0:47Hello. Hello.
- 0:49Fancy seeing you here again, I loved you.
- 0:51I'm where all the time, honestly was trying to get rid of me.
- 0:54I don't know how you doing. I'm very well.
- 0:59Thank you very well. Very excited about what we're
- 1:02going to cover today. After being in the heart.
- 1:05And the Lira, last time we spoke now.
- 1:07We're right at, right up the other end.
- 1:11Interesting. Place to be not, not a terrible
- 1:16place for all of us. I have to tell you that.
- 1:20I not only had some really nice, social media comments about dark
- 1:26invasion of Earth, commentary by had a load of private messages
- 1:29as well from people people that this male, no, not no, not at
- 1:35all. And I had a lovely message from
- 1:38Toby hey do because Well saying how much he was enjoying it.
- 1:40So delightful. Hello, Toby, you went down a
- 1:43tree. You did.
- 1:45That's Toby always says I do Eastern seven episodes tolerance
- 1:50own button for punishment. Oh I love that.
- 1:55Yeah I just I'm not I'm not a huge poetry fan.
- 2:02I have a love-hate relationship with the era but which is why
- 2:05we're not doing a perfect story today.
- 2:07Honestly, don't you be coming on this podcast?
- 2:09Right? And praising Jody risk, that's
- 2:10at a high heaven, John Pertwee era is terrible about pile that
- 2:15you get a, your life is gonna be through the roof.
- 2:18Very true. You know what I do?
- 2:20There's lots of it. I like, but I just, I don't know
- 2:23the something about it. That doesn't always work for me.
- 2:26I kind of have on and off periods with it.
- 2:28Like sometimes I'm like, ah, I need a bit of Jumper in the unit
- 2:31famine other times, I'm like, oh God, this is all very long and
- 2:35he's an asshole and but you know, you know I love about
- 2:39About it. I love those long, dreary sick,
- 2:41sparse set on other planets like colony in space.
- 2:44Oh, me too. You know why?
- 2:46It's because I can just sort of lose myself, somewhere else that
- 2:50saw the Sunday afternoon, you know, for three hours after
- 2:54exaggerations Dallas. Looking planet in the universe,
- 2:58I must I must tell you that when Jodie Whittaker, Sera started,
- 3:02there were the night that the woman who fell to Earth was
- 3:04going to be on. I was quite hungover, but also
- 3:07very excitable. And I just didn't know what to
- 3:10do to pass the time. So I watched the ambassador's of
- 3:13death and then Inferno back to the back and then by the time
- 3:16they were done, it was time to watch the woman who fell to
- 3:18Earth. You wash 14, episodes of Doctor
- 3:21Who back to back. Yeah, I know.
- 3:22It was fucking ridiculous. Really.
- 3:24But rather stab, you know that much about the planet
- 3:31exhilaration. I've got guests coming at the
- 3:33weekend from across the pond and he's I want to visit Doctor Who
- 3:37locations. I've said, I know, This
- 3:40fabulous, Clay Pit. We could go to imagine evidence
- 3:44selfie. There are on the planet exists
- 3:45areas. Oh you could do a tour, the
- 3:48quarries, couldn't you? Oh my god, most of them can't
- 3:50exist. Still surely sure we'll find one
- 3:53Exelon. Maybe the one from Destiny of
- 3:56the Daleks definitely exists because it was in and or
- 3:58recently was he really? Oh yeah.
- 4:01It was about to see. Isn't it that way?
- 4:03I don't know where it is but it's the one with the square.
- 4:07Yeah so you can go there. Oh yeah, I could go there or I
- 4:11could maybe just go to that quarry from hand to fear which
- 4:13is an actual Quarry. Yeah, very true.
- 4:16Most of them are probably has in the states that they probably
- 4:18put a load of missing episodes in there.
- 4:20Fill the bin. Then there's a housing estate on
- 4:22top. I'm still waiting for the day
- 4:27when John Levine John Levine no. Ian Levine the veins hands eyes
- 4:33back. You know it over.
- 4:36Do you think it's a you know what?
- 4:37You think it's Philip Morris? I think he's eating himself to
- 4:41such a size that you can sit on it.
- 4:42No, no. Okay.
- 4:43I'm gonna shut up. I'm sure he's lovely Dylan.
- 4:51Yes, we are. Convening today's Today because
- 4:56an era that you and I both adore.
- 5:00I think. Yeah, I think that's fair to say
- 5:03I really love this era is the Jody with career.
- 5:06It's the question alera and we had a conversation off mic where
- 5:12you said to me you don't think it's as dislikes as some people
- 5:17would lead you to believe. No I think generally it's
- 5:22reasonably well. Regarded within fandom.
- 5:24I think the loudest voices are often the most negative voices
- 5:29and they love having into a void and they love how to get anybody
- 5:32that disagrees with them. So I think most people even if
- 5:36they don't love it I just like yeah that's three solid series
- 5:40of Doctor Who and I mean what more can I would say that about
- 5:44many other areas of Doctor? Who to, I personally love it
- 5:48quite a lot. Yeah, I duel Okay, so what is
- 5:53it? Then that the draws you to this
- 5:55era. So I've got to be honest with
- 5:57you when I watched season 11, when it first went out, I
- 6:03enjoyed it, but I didn't love it and it was because it's yeah,
- 6:07it's this this change of pace between the mafia Tiara which is
- 6:12quite this sort of. I think, I'd say it's very
- 6:15testosterone-filled, the mafia and this isn't just because we
- 6:18now have a woman in the role but it's this gag A minute, sort of
- 6:23sex jokes and it's not all that, but it's just all very lat.
- 6:27They just needed to have a wine before.
- 6:31It's quite hard to write a script with one and it's true.
- 6:35If either that a wank, everything would have been fine.
- 6:38Everyone have got, we've got lovely chilled stories, like
- 6:40Demons of the Punjab grass. Instead, we've got, let's kill
- 6:43Hitler in the Time of the Doctor.
- 6:45Possibly, our did let's give her the other day.
- 6:49The difference in quality. As a historical story in that
- 6:54and thing is, I mean we aren't shoving people in Cupboards in
- 6:59this always. So, when the second series of
- 7:03Jodie, Whittaker started, and there were bits.
- 7:06I loved in that first season, I love.
- 7:09But when the sentence is died, I loved spy for, and I love the
- 7:12Dalek special beforehand, it's illusioned.
- 7:16Yeah, wonderful, absolute Doctor Who the action movie right
- 7:19there. And Richie that yeah oh just a
- 7:26sidestep. I once went on a date with the
- 7:28lady who kills unit over the phone and that she's so funny.
- 7:35Isn't she how long's it been? Since that last happens?
- 7:40It's your dime real life? No she's not.
- 7:42No. But celebrity dating shall we?
- 7:48Anyone else what? No but I tell you what.
- 7:50So I So this is a big size step. I met her on a nap and we have
- 7:55one day but it wasn't really to be.
- 7:57But during my time on that app I saw Pearl Mackey no Matt Lucas
- 8:04and in Grid, no in what's-her-name who plays
- 8:09Osgood. Yeah, Ingrid Olive Ingrid.
- 8:11Oliver, I saw the ball on there but I didn't match with any of
- 8:14them. Although Matt Lucas has you with
- 8:16the entire cast of season 10, So, what were you saying before
- 8:41we rented the history of about my love.
- 8:44Life is quite refreshing. Three billion apiece.
- 8:58So What once that's that kind of second series aired, I went back
- 9:03and started watching the first series again and loved it a lot
- 9:06more and then when my good friends at on the time, last hit
- 9:10the Jodie, Whittaker era. I thought I'm going to watch
- 9:12along with them as they do each one and I just fell in love with
- 9:17it in a way that I don't think I had before.
- 9:19And I've said this before, probably on this podcast and
- 9:21many others. It's just, it's retooled.
- 9:24As a Sunday night drama. It's slower in Pace.
- 9:27It's karma but it's just So, as gripping as the mafia tear or a
- 9:32rusty Davis area, but in very different ways, I think the
- 9:36character work is suddenly a lot more understated, that we had
- 9:40studied over the mafia Sarah. So people were like, well,
- 9:43what's this? This is all a bit naturalistic.
- 9:46Yeah. Sunday night, you know, this is
- 9:47all a bit Sunday night rather than Saturday night and people
- 9:51have been used to the hysterical drama of you know, Donna Noble,
- 9:54losing her memory or Pearl, Mackey, having a big hole blown
- 9:58for a chest and It's their revenues long protracted scenes
- 10:02between Ryan and his dad, which I still think is beautifully.
- 10:05Real, well, you're coming after country file instead of Strictly
- 10:09Come Dancing. That's it.
- 10:10That's a whole shift in kind of what the, you know, the the
- 10:15lineup you're fitting into and I think, you know, I think in the
- 10:18Moffett era especially when Russell, when what's named Peter
- 10:23Capaldi all over the place today and again, this was on the time,
- 10:27that's the first bought this up. They said, which I agree with
- 10:29that. That they suddenly trying to
- 10:31pitch Doctor Who is not the Saturday night, teatime drama,
- 10:34but the Saturday night, big explosive drama like a Luthor or
- 10:37something for that first season, the Capaldi.
- 10:39So I think we talked a lot about how Doctor Who can be many
- 10:43things in different types of shows.
- 10:45And I think this is just one version of it.
- 10:47That worked beautifully in the time slot that it was presented
- 10:49and I think they're statically as well.
- 10:52It went Sunday night drama. It was suddenly sort of it was
- 10:58very beautiful, wasn't it? And if felt big budget and was
- 11:03being done on expensive cameras and yeah, it felt extremely
- 11:07polished. What if I interesting is how
- 11:10chibnall responded after each Seasons?
- 11:13He did 11 and rating wisest. I really strong like massive
- 11:18woman who fell to Earth was first of the week or something
- 11:20like that. It was really, really it was it
- 11:21got something I think he got almost as many if not more than
- 11:25Rose got ya, it didn't this was huge then it did Hemorrhage for
- 11:29at the end but they All do if you look at all the real do
- 11:32generally. And, and he had gone for that
- 11:36sort of slower pace and thank fuck.
- 11:38You know, you was just telling stories like crazy Mafia Trant,
- 11:42you know, I always will but Jesus Christ, Steven Moffat, you
- 11:45know, will you just tell a fucking story rather I live in
- 11:50500 directions every minute? You know, it was so refreshing
- 11:54that we're having simple. Well told stories again.
- 11:57Yeah. But I think there was a little
- 12:00bit Backlash against that. So season 12, he like strong
- 12:05injection of continuity but boy did great.
- 12:08Things like continuity. He brought in are what I
- 12:10consider to be the best new series master.
- 12:13I think he did the best Cyberman in a shack.
- 12:17Yeah you did. The one of the best Daleks in
- 12:19resolution. So in terms of continuity a
- 12:22stall three, I think. Yeah.
- 12:24No I absolutely agree and I do think I think that second series
- 12:28is a big exciting series. Freeze.
- 12:30I think if there, if there are flaws and it's something that is
- 12:33not exclusive to his era, I think it's just that thing of
- 12:38trying to get Doctor Who regularly on air.
- 12:41And I know that a lots of TV shows aren't around for 18
- 12:45months to years, but it feels like for something like Doctor
- 12:48Who it needs that consistent run to really engage with the
- 12:52audiences because there was no hook to bring them back in a few
- 12:55months time. It was like 18 months time,
- 12:57here's our brand new series that's completely different.
- 12:59I think See, Davis is the only show runner so far that's been
- 13:03able to put the show out consistently because Mafi, even
- 13:05those condensed, half Seasons wasn't me against his will, but
- 13:09you were getting like five or six episodes a year and then
- 13:12Mysterio's one in a year, wasn't it?
- 13:14And, you know, I'm genuinely surprised that doctor who hasn't
- 13:21didn't become 6 episodes a year like flux about five or six
- 13:24years ago because that is six months of the year for an actor
- 13:29to perform I'm the role who can then go off and do other things
- 13:32so you probably get someone to stay in the role for longer and,
- 13:35you know, they've got lead. They've got a big enough lead
- 13:38time in between two like series to get everything ship shaped.
- 13:42But you know, we're back to what is Eight Episodes a year next
- 13:46year, which I think is pretty generous really?
- 13:49Yeah. So nowadays, yeah, exactly with
- 13:5312 as well. I feel as if it got a massive
- 13:55shot of adrenaline, like the pace ramps into are there, False
- 14:00stories with massive cost like practically.
- 14:03Every story has an enormous cost as well as the Picasa regulars
- 14:08with lows gang on lows of set pieces.
- 14:10I can see lots of money on the screen and it's like, okay, we
- 14:13want to prove that we're still here.
- 14:15We can still do it and it still be amazing.
- 14:18And then I think what happened in the last season.
- 14:20I know it was like a result of the pandemic and it was supposed
- 14:24to be a longer year and it had to be condensed, but I think
- 14:28that worked to chimel. Things to suddenly bringing his
- 14:31Broadchurch chops and do this like, inst season.
- 14:37And they've biggest difference, I found with a the last series
- 14:40I'm going to include evil of the Daleks and legends of the sea
- 14:42devil. Empower, the doctrine, is this
- 14:45massive injection of humor? Yes, fucking funny flux.
- 14:49It's so funny. I almost feel like John Bishop
- 14:54was given the scripture reading saying, you know, this ain't
- 14:57very funny, you know? I also think it's about that
- 15:02they've been doing it for several years and they know that
- 15:05like, chibnall knows the strengths of the characters and
- 15:08things like that and Jody is funny.
- 15:10Funny, doctor or is she? I mean, that's a where she's
- 15:13going release without more than bit working Eva.
- 15:18The Daleks and makes me dies when she's on the sofa and the
- 15:22darling comes in. And it's like Daleks have no
- 15:24concept of friendship and she's like, yeah well whose faults
- 15:27that? Yeah.
- 15:29Brilliant. Okay.
- 15:32All right. I'm sorry.
- 15:33I should focus as a little back to Demons of the Punjab.
- 15:39I'll tell you in a minute, why this one means so much to me.
- 15:43But what do you think about this one?
- 15:45So when it first broadcast, I thought it was sweet but again,
- 15:50I was still in that mindset of. This isn't quite how I like my
- 15:54doctor who, but every time I've gone back to it I've just loved
- 15:57it more and more and more. I just think it's so I think
- 16:02it's just a beautiful bit of Telly and it deserves to win all
- 16:06the awards. They I'd say in terms of
- 16:10writing, in terms of production and Direction location work, and
- 16:15music. This is one of the finest Doctor
- 16:18Who episodes for me, and if you're allowing for a second in
- 16:242018, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and it was very very
- 16:30Be quick, it was five months from diagnosis to her passing
- 16:33and this went out. I think in mid-november and she
- 16:38passed in mid-December just before Christmas.
- 16:41So she was very, very sick at this point, and I had had many
- 16:47conversations with my mom, was a one of these people that engage
- 16:51you in conversation, you'd have conversations long into the
- 16:54night, you know, debates. She was a spiritualist and she
- 16:58had very strong beliefs and I don't believe in any of that.
- 17:00To make it, I would battle it out all night.
- 17:04So I knew she had very, very particular beliefs about the
- 17:07afterlife and that absolutely helped.
- 17:09When she passed, I could have understood that she was going to
- 17:12a better place in our own mind. That really, really helped me
- 17:16out and this episode, which is all about these creatures coming
- 17:21in at the point of death and taking people's Souls away and
- 17:26that sequence at the end where he He appears and then goes up
- 17:31with all the other faces. I'm up into the air with a nice
- 17:35beautiful music. Well I watch it, I found it so
- 17:39profoundly moving because it was.
- 17:41Okay. She didn't believe in alien
- 17:42creatures that were going to come along and save her just
- 17:44before she dies, but it was kind of playing in the same ball game
- 17:48and I think I found this, I'm moving at the time because it
- 17:52was just tied up with everything that's gone on with my life.
- 17:55And there are certain Doctor Who stories that you can do that
- 17:57with those sort of, you can put a pin in them and they're
- 18:00important for when you first watch them and what's happening
- 18:03in your life and this is a doctor who stories that reduces
- 18:08me to tears pretty much every time I wash it.
- 18:09Now I'm watching with you today. Alistair hold it for.
- 18:14Hopefully we'll make enough knob joke so that you don't have a
- 18:16crime but if you want if you want to cry you've have you have
- 18:20Permission to cry. It's fine, it's interesting.
- 18:23You say that because I didn't there's another fan and I won't
- 18:27name them. Just in case.
- 18:27They don't want to be named who for the hell bent, and
- 18:30heaven-sent talks about dealing with grief in a very different
- 18:34way. But he lost his mom, a few years
- 18:38before and he said that perfectly encapsulated how he
- 18:41felt about the grief of his mother passing through those two
- 18:45episodes, which I thought was really lovely.
- 18:48I never thought I'd ever seen a doctor who couldn't Move me to
- 18:51tears like this because I'm a bit of a hard.
- 18:53I'm a big soft him, a bit of a hard bugger when it comes to
- 18:56television and it has to be truly Heroes Buffy.
- 19:00I've never seen blow, okay? So, Joyce, Summers dies in that,
- 19:03as if I was a boy. - yes. So I'm not gonna like that one.
- 19:14Yeah, and this think that last 10 minutes of this dramatic, Is
- 19:21some of the best ever Doctor Who and the way it a lot of series
- 19:2511 reminds me of series 1 and 2 of the classes, the three
- 19:30companions, the the very serious historical stories like the
- 19:36Crusade and things like that and Massacre.
- 19:40It really, I really feel like they're leaning into that here
- 19:43and it's a massive strength because the historical have
- 19:45become a bit of a joke. Yeah, I have this thing and
- 19:50Colonel said that you felt it. The that he purposely went back
- 19:53to the beginning and the roots of the show and I have the
- 19:56celebrity historicals of never really worked for me.
- 20:00I love a Hartnell historical from back in the day, but
- 20:03celebrity historic was not so much and this is the first era
- 20:06where I felt, okay, I'm engaged with the historic was in a way
- 20:09that wasn't before not so much Nikola Tesla's night of Terror
- 20:13but you know the there's nothing particularly wrong with it, but
- 20:18that's the sort of Deputy historical.
- 20:21I just don't really care for that much.
- 20:22It's fine. I will watch it.
- 20:24But you know, this and Rosa were really just like, okay, wow,
- 20:30we're really in New Territory for a show here and for nearly
- 20:34six year old show to be pushing new ground.
- 20:36Like, I mean, it's a miracle, isn't it?
- 20:40Yeah, I, you know I mean I know we get the morbius doctors the
- 20:43next season and everybody calls that like a big, throw back to
- 20:46the past. And I go, what's Doctor Who's
- 20:48eating jumping the shark eating it?
- 20:50It's own continuity bins, like it's still doing new things.
- 20:53And even in that season like things, like, can you hear me?
- 20:57And perhaps he is. I know people a lot people don't
- 20:59practice, but I love both those stories.
- 21:01I just think that's that thin thin, you and different and
- 21:03doing things not clear. I wasn't done before.
- 21:05Sheila, I'm gonna do a commentary on.
- 21:08Can you hear me with Luke Malloy?
- 21:10And you know why? Why is he never watched it?
- 21:13It's the only episode daughter is never watched.
- 21:15So I'm determined to make him. Watch it.
- 21:17Well, that's exciting to hear about him is first.
- 21:20Appearance of the big Wiggly fingers.
- 21:24Oh yeah. Oh that's ghoulish.
- 21:25Oh yeah. Didn't I should wake up in your
- 21:27bed and saying that in the Moonlight?
- 21:30I've woken up makes the worse. Yeah.
- 21:32Me too. Yeah, we're in no trouble.
- 21:36So pasta longer to board. This story is full of hot Indian
- 21:40men. Oh, that is very true.
- 21:44That a conniption fit. The first time I watched it.
- 21:47Okay. Well, okay.
- 21:48Well, should we go and watch the thing?
- 21:50So yeah, let's let's do it. Yeah, we basically determine
- 21:54that. We just love this era.
- 21:56We love this episode. Let's go when you and will Press
- 22:02Play in 3, 2, 1. Hello, Joe.
- 22:07Even having the sound on even having the 50 minute episodes
- 22:13film or Sunday night and Saturday.
- 22:14Nice, it does. I've got to say straight away.
- 22:18I fucking love this. Pintu.
- 22:22I just think it's weird and glorious and it's again, it's
- 22:26very 60s. It's like, it sounds weird.
- 22:30And alien the one thing that always annoys me is that they
- 22:33don't fly through the oh, Doctor Who I don't know what particular
- 22:38complaint of a doctor who fan. Yeah.
- 22:40Exactly. Nobody else was watching this
- 22:42and going really puddle of the Jodi was but you know I really
- 22:48love it. So the bit where it goes.
- 22:51That, where the middle of this woman who plays yazis Mom.
- 22:56I don't know what her name is. Oh, she's fabulous.
- 23:00I just I love like we're in Sheffield for a start, you know,
- 23:04it's not it's not London. And we've got ruin with an
- 23:08Indian family in in Sheffield and it's just like, oh this is,
- 23:13this is New Territory for dr. Hill a little bit.
- 23:17It's really just like talking about their Heritage because
- 23:21this are come from Birmingham and the lots of Indian and
- 23:24Pakistani families and things like that.
- 23:26And they, you know, you go to their houses and be surrounded
- 23:30by that history and that culture, but you don't
- 23:32necessarily see represented in Doctor Who my my best mate.
- 23:35When I was growing up was Indian and boy a boy.
- 23:38I'll blame his mother, you know, for my absolute love because she
- 23:43just made those delicious food ever until honestly is super
- 23:46hot. I talk home wherever you are.
- 23:48You all right? But I think it's a very
- 23:53believable week. We've lent back into the
- 23:54families again and I'm we don't see another one, which is a
- 23:57shame. We see a bit of a minute alone.
- 23:59We let him go a bit. It's a shame.
- 24:01I've really feel like I always said that the thing that the
- 24:05Battle of rounds core of color switch to be is probably the
- 24:08only real clunker of the era. It was missing that human
- 24:13element, especially when Earth was under The threat and I feel
- 24:17like if you cut back to the cons and you cut back to, I don't
- 24:20know, just more human characters.
- 24:22So you would have felt like it would have felt more cohesive.
- 24:26I think it's scrap, their bloody script and write a script about
- 24:29the cons. But if you care of the doctors
- 24:31in it, let's just have a and a bit more time because the woman,
- 24:34the woman from dinner ladies, what's her name?
- 24:37You know, and actresses. I don't know why I named that
- 24:39all. She is brilliant as well.
- 24:42I love, I mean, I think arachnids in the UK is an
- 24:45underrated classic. Okay, so much fun, but he's
- 24:49brilliant at that way, she thinks he's supposed to yes.
- 24:51Who are you dating Ryan? He dating the doctor, my, my
- 24:54friend's mother. She was a very typical Indian
- 24:58mother and that's she was absolutely obsessed with her son
- 25:01was dating. And that, well honestly, it was
- 25:05wonderful. And Joe, I talk about my family
- 25:08too much in this because you know there are rotten Bunch but
- 25:12when she says you know, your for my favorite granddaughter, ER my
- 25:16nan used to do that and I was the favorite.
- 25:19No ice lucky you lucky you. How do you feel about this
- 25:24Tardis interior because much has been said about it?
- 25:27What a marvelous giant penises around the console unusual
- 25:38things liking in? Can you hear me when it all goes
- 25:40blue or when it all goes raids? Yeah.
- 25:44I think I've got no got sorry after you.
- 25:47How do you British? I think it gets better and
- 25:52better throughout the series. I love the walls.
- 25:54I love the fact that it doesn't look like they're solid solid
- 25:57walls that like behind that could go on forever.
- 26:00By the Tardis. Should I'm less fussed about the
- 26:05it's not even the the big dildo in the middle.
- 26:08It's the ones when you see Moving and it's the littlest
- 26:12ones at the top that they happened down there just a bit
- 26:14too much for me. It's like a ton of Sammy's going
- 26:17up there. You see that console when it was
- 26:23released as a toy? Oh God.
- 26:27I ordered that straight away. Yeah, I know I was gonna say I
- 26:30don't know where my fingers around it or put it in me.
- 26:32It was just I think it's que le securely well-lit in this is
- 26:36Mark tonderai that directs this. You know what I think.
- 26:40And he's coming back. So Russell looking over his
- 26:43shoulder and change writer to Lele is as well, and Cherry
- 26:46course, the best directors that have been, you know, working on
- 26:51a shows that using that's good. I'm less.
- 26:53So, with classic Doctor Who I've got more facts and figures that
- 26:56have just been ingrained in my mind over the years.
- 26:59So, doing new series stuff, it's definitely more about my
- 27:01enjoyment. I'm less likely to know who's in
- 27:04it, or whose director this architecture.
- 27:06You every writer and director of The Rusty, Davis stories, but
- 27:09beyond that, I Do it. And yeah, I think I've probably
- 27:12just about do the rods to Davis era.
- 27:15Do you know where this is filmed?
- 27:17Wherever? Leave with Croatia is stunning.
- 27:21Yeah, it's gorgeous. There's a shot later on.
- 27:25We're in the climax where they're running for a field of
- 27:28poppies. Yeah, I remember saying out loud
- 27:31that I don't who has never been this beautiful.
- 27:34Yeah and so we come on doing these visuals so a lot of its
- 27:38Croatia. There are some shots It's later
- 27:40on but are clearly Cardiff in the rain.
- 27:42But and they said on the commentary for the DVD, they do
- 27:46say, yeah, we did have to do some of it in Cardiff because
- 27:49there are in Croatia for what saw was this story, and did they
- 27:56go? They went to South Africa for
- 27:57Rosa and for one Yuan goes monuments as well and it just
- 28:03makes sense. Like I think the fact that the
- 28:06doctor always does a bit of overseas filming but I I feel
- 28:10like this are really more than ever went 10.
- 28:13What where can we get to? And what production value?
- 28:16We going to get out of it and they really grab hold of it.
- 28:19Even when they couldn't go overseas, they were like, well,
- 28:21we're still not sticking to England.
- 28:23So spy after clearly they're going overseas, but they're all
- 28:26around the world and that pre-title sequence.
- 28:28Yeah, just a lot chibnall with his round-the-world stuff.
- 28:32Yeah, you know, he likes to open it with a world.
- 28:37Sort of threatened traveling challenge or yeah.
- 28:39I like that a lot. Good.
- 28:44I'm just gonna say, I'm just going to talk more about, how
- 28:45beautiful, but all this looks and how different like have we
- 28:50ever seen, India, and Pakistan, and Doctor Who Never, Never, and
- 28:57the idea of taking something. So, the partition was never ever
- 29:04talk to me at school, never touched on.
- 29:07I think his the, the whole thing, the colonization of
- 29:10India, it's just a big embarrassment.
- 29:12Harrasment to England. Now, is how we went out to
- 29:15civilize the rest of the world and yeah, how to fuck off?
- 29:19Ya know, I think I think there is, like, I knew very little
- 29:25about the partition of India before I'd seen this time with
- 29:28Rosa, we were taught at my school, all about the civil
- 29:30rights movement in America, because it's American or
- 29:32England. So it's, you know, it's fine to
- 29:34know that the terrible things that people were doing there.
- 29:37So I kind of knew all about Rosa Parks and about Malcolm X.
- 29:41And Martin Luther King and all those things.
- 29:44We've covered it quite a lot, but the partition of India, I,
- 29:47you know, I knew roughly what it was, but I couldn't turn.
- 29:51Like this certainly opened my eyes a lot more to it.
- 29:54I was watching the crown recently and they covered it a
- 29:56bit more as well, and it's just a very dark stain on British
- 29:59history. What I thought was a genius idea
- 30:02and whether it was then a Patel who 2424 banging scripts, Mouse,
- 30:07a, or Chris, chibnall whoever's idea.
- 30:10It was to tell this Massive piece of History through this
- 30:16family. So to tell you in such an
- 30:18intimate way where we can just buy into the characters, get
- 30:21close to them and that's why I think the the climax is you you
- 30:26could have shown me, you know, cities in Ruins.
- 30:28And I wouldn't have felt as much as I did, as the fella trying to
- 30:32convince his brother who's gone other side.
- 30:38You know, then he's executed like I really feel free because
- 30:41you get to it, you really get Close to these characters.
- 30:43So it describes what's going on. But just in a very emotional
- 30:49way, it's also strangely relevant.
- 30:51Like they talk later on about the brother being turned by
- 30:55Voices of hatred on the radio. And it's like I mean every time
- 30:59you get into an Uber, you're here London, talk radio, or LBC,
- 31:02or some Nigel? Farage spouting.
- 31:04Some shit. I believe are hindered rhotic in
- 31:07the background here. Hey, on the radio.
- 31:10Yeah. And Just look at us as a nation
- 31:14have brexit divided us how covid divided us and things like that.
- 31:17It's all still relevant, it's the same shit.
- 31:22But I also think they're telling it through the prism of this one
- 31:25family is obviously the better way to tell it but also I think
- 31:29we know the doctor whose budget was reduced after the rusty
- 31:33Davis era and one of the things we got is smaller casts and less
- 31:38supporting artists and things like that and I think it makes
- 31:41the storytelling be Because you have to tell those intimate
- 31:43story you know with fires of Pompeii.
- 31:46Fires of Pompeii is a fun story but you've got your tell it to
- 31:50one family but that you never quite get to know in the way you
- 31:53get to know these characters. But then there's all the other
- 31:55Cara, there's a big monsters and aliens, invading and all this
- 31:59other stuff going on. Big, VFX shots of people running
- 32:02around the city and it's fun with a bit of a like foot the
- 32:06end. But with this one you're just
- 32:08like, okay we're meeting real people.
- 32:10But if I'm feels like you've traveled in time, And rather
- 32:12than making this this huge sort of sci-fi show it would
- 32:16genuinely feels like you've authentically travel back to a
- 32:19period of History. Yeah look at the shore with the
- 32:22streak running down its gorgeous it.
- 32:25I've let every sort of frame has been considered and the colors.
- 32:30The colors just pop, they're so like beautiful.
- 32:33It's just it's just nature right there on the screen in a way
- 32:37that we're used to seeing vast vistas of either CGI, history or
- 32:41CGI. It's because I've gone
- 32:43somewhere. Other than Drew real Cardiff.
- 32:45Sorry, is that, you know? They can finally show off some
- 32:49beautiful landscapes. And yeah, another thing I love
- 32:52about this story is, it is specifically tailored for Jody
- 32:56Whittaker's doctor, so she can be a part of that bridal party,
- 33:01she can have the henna tattoo and she's a very soft, very
- 33:06comfortable in those sort of situations, I sort of equations.
- 33:13Yeah. And I think Jodie Whittaker
- 33:14response to it in a really interesting way as well.
- 33:17It's not like it is in arachnids where she's awkward she she just
- 33:23feels like part of the family, I think money under.
- 33:25Yeah yeah she's and I think some of that is a bit because there
- 33:29is this family link to your as as well.
- 33:31So it perhaps they were some somehow, they're slightly more
- 33:35open to it. I love all these black and white
- 33:38flashes of the what the creatures called.
- 33:41Oh my God. Soon, I keep talking.
- 33:44I was Google. When I first saw them I was
- 33:48like, is that quillian from the rescue?
- 33:50But it was not to be what a closer look and you are.
- 33:53Now they look a bit better than that.
- 33:55Yeah, it looks good. Yeah, first time cook Williams,
- 33:59got a menacing looking, a menacing looking face.
- 34:03I love how they wash in and out of the picture as well.
- 34:07It's such a simple effect but it's a lot fun and they have
- 34:10that the music for this is all Very like, you know, you can
- 34:15feel the Indian influence to it but then they just but they have
- 34:19these terrifying moments when it cuts to the creatures.
- 34:22Initially, then it's straight out of a horror film what the
- 34:25music in this. Like I was I was unsure about
- 34:28Marigold going, I just love, I genuinely love this music even
- 34:33when it did get a little bit repetitive, towards the end, but
- 34:36boy, they chose a brilliant, brilliant replacement and I
- 34:39think this is I remember he went on to They're off the words and
- 34:44said this, this was his favorite school to write for That season.
- 34:47He loved doing the version of the Doctor Who theme with the
- 34:50male voice at the end, which will they called the fajar Ian's
- 34:55or fortunately? The vaginas for for jar Ian's.
- 35:00I think that's a jari, and okay, it's a space name If Ever I
- 35:03heard one. And it J right in the middle of
- 35:06it. Yeah, I I love saying and I can
- 35:10do this music and I think here He does a fantastic job
- 35:13interesting. Really protective and able to
- 35:14tell says, in the complimentary for this.
- 35:16He was saying that he remembered an episode of The West Wing
- 35:20where like somebody died or something like that.
- 35:21And then they cut to the normal fee Mattoon and he said to Chris
- 35:24chibnall like, actually, I don't, I don't want it to be
- 35:28just well because after such a poignant episode.
- 35:37So I think they made the right decision.
- 35:39Absolutely. And with Rosa to Is Rise Up song
- 35:44instead of the theme tune but his dramatic music in this as
- 35:48well when in those last 10 minutes, when the horsemen are
- 35:52coming and there's like a constant be like a suspenseful
- 35:56be going on. And then just before, what is
- 35:59the guys I'm Prem is sure. There's like a male voice that
- 36:03comes in there as well. I'm a nice.
- 36:05Just it's so good. I'd I was I'm just say here
- 36:08saying superlatives my goodness. Yeah.
- 36:12I mean, that's why we're here. Like we're here because we liked
- 36:14this episode. We were, you know, I'm ignoring
- 36:16about the Daleks invasion of Earth and I'm sure we'll do
- 36:19something in the future but that you know perhaps won't entirely
- 36:22work for us but like like you know just a couple of Seasons
- 36:26back doctor who was putting out, you know, sleep no more.
- 36:30Yeah. Leave me that.
- 36:33I like sleep. No more like above you'll.
- 36:40Yeah. Yeah, well it's a song I keep
- 36:44fighting. You know I love do I love is how
- 36:47the the the jar Ian's with a J are presented as the the
- 36:53monsters of the yeah. Initially with House of Fear
- 36:56them and think that they're up to no good.
- 37:01And it does that 28 Days Later, twist that know the monsters are
- 37:05the people. These the monsters are the
- 37:07people in this. A life, always think.
- 37:09That's a great lesson to learn I also think we've come a long way
- 37:15just from, you know, he-who-must-not-be-named Gareth
- 37:19Roberts Shakespeare code but you know the doctor arrives with
- 37:23free majumdar somewhere and he goes well what about you know,
- 37:27the color of my skin essentially and he just goes walk around
- 37:30like you own the place, like in a very entitled white man, way.
- 37:33And even, and even, the more kind of gung-ho sort of Moffat
- 37:38approach of punching, the racist and thin ice.
- 37:41I'd like I do I just think this series is so much more nuanced
- 37:46about that the time travel and the implications of it.
- 37:50I don't think you quite get enough of dealing with the fact
- 37:55that the doctors a woman. I think the witch find this is
- 37:58the only one that really kind of goes, this is what it's like to
- 38:01be a woman in history and I would have liked to have seen a
- 38:03bit more of that. Small glimpse went Byron.
- 38:06Try to come on to her. Yeah, I see you sitting here.
- 38:11Get off my or I don't know why, but it's really pretty as well.
- 38:17You know, I probably would have said yes.
- 38:18I mean that that that household in Villa Di audacity fucking
- 38:23ball, it was all of them, dr. Pollidori nearest.
- 38:27Four-poster, come on. Yeah, but I do ya like in in the
- 38:35Shakespeare code, they're ignoring races over near
- 38:38something like human nature. They're just like So glancing at
- 38:42it in there. Nice.
- 38:44They basically say, oh, this is a simple solution, just punch it
- 38:48here in this and in Rosa you're having nuanced debate.
- 38:53Yeah, you know. Absolutely.
- 38:55And it's, you know, I hope I think I hope and think they'll
- 38:59be more of that within shooting cater to a sera.
- 39:02I think. Oh yeah.
- 39:04Definitely. And I think Russell T Davies was
- 39:06a bit tentative back then because he wasn't sure kind of
- 39:10what he could get away. Wave.
- 39:11Well, he caught a nose now good, where, where the show's been in
- 39:14the last 10 years, what he can do and I don't think he gives a
- 39:17shit anymore because, yeah, you know, it's also where like, you
- 39:23know, there's this massive debates about diversity within
- 39:26the society at the moment and Russell himself has been at the
- 39:31center of a small flurry on Twitter, the other day.
- 39:34But as, you know, because I anything these days, I know, I
- 39:39know, I know but I think Russell knows the sort of people that
- 39:43are going to be watching Doctor Who and the sort of people who
- 39:46wants to get in like it's got from where it was in the 90s
- 39:49where it was basically a bunch of white men, and of which some
- 39:54of them were gay. And that was sort of the 99% of
- 39:58the fanbase to hat what I done first fan base Doctor Who's Got
- 40:01and how much bigger an audience. It could get telling stories
- 40:05like this, especially on a global platform like this t plus
- 40:08having others people saying. Yeah.
- 40:10Because the doctors Woman anymore as a step backwards.
- 40:13We've got a hot gay black man in what is wrong.
- 40:19So, this is the second time we've had, like a sequence on
- 40:24the battlefield is, no, because we have that scene in
- 40:26Afghanistan and our water, which is you for that sequence in Dark
- 40:30Water was a bit much because we're killing children there and
- 40:34that's all I really want Doc to to go there.
- 40:36But mornings. This works for me though.
- 40:40Yeah. It's a lovely little moment and
- 40:43it's it feels real. Like, you know, the thing in
- 40:48twice upon a time where Mark Gatiss is character is all set
- 40:52around the battlefield but because it's so British old
- 40:56school it almost doesn't feel like it doesn't have the
- 41:00emotional impact youth. I think they wanted it to have
- 41:03because it's almost feels like a bit of Telly that bit from the
- 41:071960s or 70s, you know. Well I was just a Wait at the
- 41:11signs, read advert. Did it better as well.
- 41:16Very true, very true. A bigger budget.
- 41:19You know, how do we feel about Ryan Sinclair?
- 41:24I know this is really Ryan story.
- 41:25Are you going to ask me that question, really?
- 41:29My Nubian Prince. I think rather clear such an old
- 41:34cookie because I think he's a terrific actor toasting up.
- 41:38I think when they let him Acts, Like they give him extended
- 41:42dialogue. Seems he always delivers that
- 41:45sequence in resolution? I mentioned earlier when he
- 41:47talks to his dad. Oh yeah.
- 41:49That is that is exactly the relationship I had with my dad
- 41:53and I'm never identified with a character in dogs home or that I
- 41:57did in that same question, where why I was there in the middle of
- 42:00that very Pacey episode that 10-minute dots but never mind.
- 42:05I think he's very naturalistic and we're not used to
- 42:07naturalistic and what I love it when it is Super hip.
- 42:11Right? 88 planes.
- 42:13Was it storm? Z this shows you how unhip I am
- 42:16and I know one of that and he's, you know, he's got his YouTube
- 42:19page and all of this. But the things that make me
- 42:22laugh. The most is when he tries to be
- 42:23very masculine like when he comes out with that gun in the
- 42:27ghost Monument. Yeah, I'll shoot her and he goes
- 42:30you hands off like a big girl and they do that joke, a couple
- 42:33of times. And I always feel like they're
- 42:35trying to puncher that's all masculine image.
- 42:38Yeah. Well I like Him.
- 42:41I don't think he's the most memorable.
- 42:43I don't think is the best companion but I do like him.
- 42:45Yeah, I think I kind of agree with you.
- 42:48I think he is the one that comes at probably the most underserved
- 42:52from this era, but when we are focusing on him and you know,
- 42:55you get that stuff with his mate in, can you hear me?
- 42:58And as you say, resolution and stuff, I think he was really
- 43:02shines but like my like a criticism I do.
- 43:05However, the era is that I think it does struggle with three
- 43:08companions but when it works well, Well, it works really well
- 43:12and the interaction between the three of them and the doctor I
- 43:15think is wonderful but sometimes you like there's this is three
- 43:19people sharing one companions lines that the to penultimate
- 43:24episodes. It takes you away and The
- 43:26Haunting. No that's not and I'll score it.
- 43:28Takes you away. And the holding of villa de
- 43:29Darcy, I think they are the two. They get the three companions
- 43:33bang on. Yeah, yeah, the right man was
- 43:35here or they will get good materials.
- 43:37Well, Yeah, it was yes initially, wasn't it?
- 43:41And then obviously come flocks. And those last three, she's
- 43:44getting all that fabulous material but I think, you know,
- 43:49I think yeah, it's obviously gets this episode in this
- 43:51series. I mean, they all get their
- 43:53moment in over this series and I think yeah.
- 43:56It gets a bit more in the next series, but she becomes by flux.
- 44:00She's a much funnier character as well.
- 44:02And I think that's, that's not just chibnall learning how to
- 44:05write the characters, better at things like that that showing
- 44:08Somebody maturing and developing as a character and I think like
- 44:13her her Arc while it is a subtle one and the whole sort of
- 44:20thousand in thing, no matter how it was played.
- 44:23People would have been up in arms about it.
- 44:25It was beautiful. I thought it was, oh, so
- 44:27understated. And the fact that they never
- 44:31consummated that and they both agreed as mature adults.
- 44:35Like this can't happen, but clearly They love each other.
- 44:39I just thought that was beautifully done.
- 44:41Yeah. I wouldn't have changed thing
- 44:42that last seen on the Tardis with the ice cream.
- 44:44What it's lovely. And I like I I always think I
- 44:51was find it funny. When people are like the doctor
- 44:54suddenly likes girls, like what the doctors kind of always like
- 44:56girls. It would have.
- 44:59Also the doctor is sort of, especially since the new series
- 45:02has been hinted at as being bisexual and even if it's not
- 45:07necessarily always Always like, you know, the doctor isn't
- 45:10shagging his way around the universe, but he's he or she
- 45:15always kind of have these flirtations and I think, you
- 45:19know, people read too much into them and not enough into them at
- 45:22the same time depending on which, you know, side of the
- 45:26argument. You land on my gosh.
- 45:29He's got so much energy Jody. Wish she does.
- 45:32He lights up the screen. She's very manic.
- 45:37But not And I find 10 and towards the end of his era, the
- 45:41money in this gets a bit too much, but I love her sort of
- 45:44breathless, kind of reminds me a bit of early McGann in the all
- 45:48in the big finish audios which are my brother.
- 45:51Once described, I don't know whether it was him that came up
- 45:53with it but as a breathless, manic pixie.
- 45:56And I think that's probably a good description of Jodi as well
- 46:00as that early film again. Do you know what I could say?
- 46:02You know, I think it's been doctor reviews.
- 46:05I always gave the characters. My talks about them, a little
- 46:07paragraph, If I gave them a like a little description, a nice to
- 46:10call home against doctor from that very first from storm,
- 46:12warning the breathless romantic age.
- 46:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:19But I think there is some of that there.
- 46:22And I may have said this to you before.
- 46:23So apologies, if I'm repeating myself to the listeners and to
- 46:26you, but I just think this is the first doctor that's just
- 46:29informed by the classic, the, by the new series.
- 46:32Sorry, I don't think she's not seeing Patrick troughton or Tom
- 46:35Baker and there's no reason why she should love.
- 46:38When I thought to go back and watch you all, do grab all these
- 46:42scripts and do the best I can with them.
- 46:44But Dr. Who fans are up in arms about our they are there.
- 46:48Well, that's they'd be mad about it and then I'd be mad about it.
- 46:50She was like, I'd seen it all and I sure loved it.
- 46:53When she read out all those tweets from all the haters.
- 46:55Did you watch that video? Yeah, she's out this tweet and
- 46:59she goes well, you ain't seen me yet.
- 47:01If yeah, what people have forgotten is, she said she
- 47:07wasn't gonna watch him. But she did say that once she'd
- 47:10left the role she was going to go back and watch some.
- 47:12So I'd love to know what she thought.
- 47:14I mean, if they could get her on one of those behind the sofa
- 47:17features on the, on the Blu-rays, that would be
- 47:20interested to see she clearly had a ball making this and I
- 47:25think she might fantastic connections with everyone.
- 47:27She worked with all the regular Arch, I think she's a massive
- 47:32Tyler. We were lucky to have her.
- 47:34And do you know when I see when I see doctor, Fans.
- 47:39I'm like on the periphery of friends with a lot of DOTA fans.
- 47:42I love Jodie, Whittaker going off to these conventions, and
- 47:46having five minutes with her or well, you get a couple of
- 47:49minutes and it's just the best moment of their year and she
- 47:53makes it the best moment of the year as well.
- 47:55Like she knows how special meaning, every Doctor Who fan
- 47:58is. It's just glorious.
- 48:00I know, like nobody that I know that's works with her.
- 48:05All like matter of ever said a bad.
- 48:08Edward about it. I've heard all sorts of other
- 48:10people behind the scenes of Doctor Who be slagged off, but
- 48:13I've never heard anybody say a bad thing about Jodi.
- 48:16Have you heard David Tennant? Be slacked off.
- 48:18I have heard him the slagged off.
- 48:22Yeah, once our okay. That's not bad.
- 48:26That's not bad. But I think David Tennant's.
- 48:28A genuinely nice guy and I want you asked 100 people about one
- 48:31person. You're gonna get hundred
- 48:32different opinions. Very true.
- 48:35Very if you've got 100 positive opinions about Joe, With her
- 48:38world and they go. It's what people used to say
- 48:41about Peter Davison and why he was his career was so successful
- 48:44because he was a good actor. But also apparently dishes to go
- 48:46in be nice to everybody. Do the job doing well, and then
- 48:50leave. And that was it.
- 48:51He didn't have time for courting controversy or anything like
- 48:55that. What, in whatever he did, he was
- 48:56just wanted to get on with it. This scene here.
- 48:59Where the for women are sitting around at one with fertile
- 49:03erasing, the fucking back, they'll test by a mile and I
- 49:07like you too. Try and point to me to a
- 49:09moffatt's group that does that I don't care.
- 49:13I just love all this. Just all hang time with these
- 49:16people. You know, just get interrupted
- 49:18and we need to get to know these people.
- 49:20For that climax to hear ya for us to Care.
- 49:23You're absolutely right. And again, you just thinking,
- 49:26aren't I was busy talking about Peter Davison.
- 49:28This is this is groundbreaking for Doctor Who and like, I don't
- 49:33think many people pick up on how groundbreaking something like
- 49:36this is, we've not seen A bunch of Indian Pakistani women sat
- 49:41down talking about their lives in this way before ever inductor
- 49:44her. I mean it's probably a good job.
- 49:45They didn't do in the 60s but you know, I mean yeah.
- 49:50You know what this is as well. This is a base Under Siege story
- 49:53of a coin because she said a couple of things back like
- 49:58they're on their way. Our we've got just enough time
- 50:01to get you married. So in the background of all
- 50:03this, you've had the radio signals coming in spreading like
- 50:07the Ugh and around you. The hey, they know that the the
- 50:12other side are coming to get, they gotta get out of there.
- 50:15I love that. I love the sort of
- 50:17claustrophobia of that and this is their home as well.
- 50:19They're going to be uprooted from their home.
- 50:22It just has like a tangible atmosphere to it.
- 50:24Yeah, It's really just, I mean, I just keep saying
- 50:30groundbreaking in ways that it's all I can do.
- 50:34It looks beautiful, this groundbreaking, all the, every
- 50:37the dialog just Sparkles, but not in a way of like, it's not
- 50:40that Punchy Joker minute it's not, it doesn't have to be
- 50:46saying funny things and that, you know, that I would cut to
- 50:49that all the men having similar conversations in their own ways
- 50:52and in ways that they can sort of Express themselves, He's got
- 50:56period and that culture, like it's just really lovely touching
- 50:59moments and I love the fact that.
- 51:02Wow, he just said you love me forever.
- 51:04Of course, I love you. Basically saying she loved me
- 51:07enough to like, leave, guys. It's really, really, really
- 51:12good. Okay, let's talk about the
- 51:16person, the talent in the robot. Everyone's talented.
- 51:19Let's talk about Bradley Walsh. I cannot tell you what, that
- 51:23fucker, a steals every I sewed, and the bit in a minute where
- 51:28premise going off to get married and he knows he's going to die
- 51:32and he's holding back the tears. This silly game show.
- 51:37Host comedian can break on a dime.
- 51:41Yeah, fantastic better casting. Who?
- 51:44Absolutely? Yeah, slightly surprising that
- 51:47he had got an acting career before before that.
- 51:50It was in Christian nal's Law and Order UK, wasn't it?
- 51:53And I think it's a very clever move from Um chibnall to go okay
- 51:57there's going to be a doctor who fan of a certain age who are
- 52:00used to a doctor of a certain age or similar.
- 52:05We're going to change their identity that there aren't there
- 52:07figure for identification. It's not going to be the doctor
- 52:09anymore but there is still got there still represented within
- 52:12the Tardis. I think that's a very and you
- 52:14get it with John Bishop as well as a very smart move to kind of
- 52:18ease people in and that decision to have the character archive
- 52:23season 11, be the pair of them, getting over the death of Grace
- 52:29and how that's were dropped into several episodes and then
- 52:33getting close. Oh sir through adventuring with
- 52:35the doctor to the point where he can finally call him his
- 52:38granddad like it's really subtle.
- 52:41Yeah. I like subtle.
- 52:42I find subtle more moving than obvious.
- 52:44Sometimes I wouldn't be the first person to say this, but if
- 52:48it takes you away and then the season finale for this season, I
- 52:51think a lot of people would look on the season very differently
- 52:55because they be looking more at the emotional Arc.
- 52:57So rather than that oh look Tim Shaw's back and there's nothing
- 53:00wrong with him. Sure I also just think it's the
- 53:02stupid things like The woman who fell to Earth, you assume it's
- 53:05referring to the doctor but it's referring to Grace.
- 53:08Yeah, she's the one that falls to Earth and changes everybody's
- 53:11lives and you have that whole toast in doing his blog at the
- 53:14beginning and stuff and it's just really lovely stuff.
- 53:18I mean I said this a million times are consider a resolution
- 53:20to be the climax reason because that's where Ryan, meet his dad
- 53:25again. And yeah and it's called
- 53:28resolution as well. I just think it's a shame that
- 53:33you had Just because if they're, there are few weeks apart, it
- 53:38just makes everybody girl. Oh well that's it.
- 53:41It's out with a whimper. Whereas, you know, you could
- 53:43have put the Tim Shaw sequel, this episode 9, the general
- 53:47setting that tell for of interview, for Doctor Who
- 53:49magazine said, the one that is the niggle for me is ran score
- 53:54of ko loss because I ran out of time and I didn't have time to
- 53:58give it a second and third draft.
- 54:00So basically, it's what you wrote.
- 54:02Just went out. Yeah.
- 54:04And that happens all the time and Doctor Who it just because
- 54:06it's a very difficult show to make.
- 54:08And I think every show runner has this thing where after the
- 54:11first series they're they're just like, oh I've got to make
- 54:14another one and another one, and another one and this script
- 54:17isn't working. So I've got to rewrite it and
- 54:19like it's a story as old as time and doctored a budget.
- 54:25But you know what, sometimes in a panic I do.
- 54:27That's a Christian was about talent.
- 54:28I think he's got a lot of talent but I'm midnight was made
- 54:32effects here in four days. Days off in there.
- 54:35Give me a script. Sit, your death was effectively
- 54:37written in a weekend. Yeah.
- 54:39Yeah. No.
- 54:40Very true. And that.
- 54:41That happens every now and then but it's not something that
- 54:44happens all the time and people Can't expected to pull a classic
- 54:48out of thin air. I think will happen with flux
- 54:52later on, you know, is that he had that season sort of hammered
- 54:57out the 10 episode season, and because he had to basically
- 55:01redraft the whole thing, he This will go over it again and again
- 55:07I'm not the flag came out. I just think flux is how long
- 55:12his flocks is like exactly sides.
- 55:15Seven hours also make it six and a half hours.
- 55:17Six hours 66, maybe a little less.
- 55:21Okay, so five and a bit hours are just don't find find a Duff
- 55:25be in it. I love it.
- 55:27Me neither. I don't want to give too many of
- 55:29my opinions on flux here because we are going to hit those up
- 55:32very shortly. This that it certainly some of
- 55:37his strongest writing I think and I'm very excited to revisit
- 55:41it again. I just before we decided to do
- 55:44it, I watched the first episode and I was like I need to sit
- 55:47down and watch this whole thing and also try to Sue.
- 55:51I'll get a night shift recently where I listened to the
- 55:55Halloween apocalypse. But because I was working, I
- 55:57only listen to the Halloween apocalypse and just as an audio
- 56:00experience. It was incredible.
- 56:02That's amazing. Yes, Yeah, I was terrific.
- 56:05It made me want to go back and do that with a lot of these
- 56:07series. Once they are they held up.
- 56:08Imagine it was like those William Hartnell stories that we
- 56:10can't see, but we can. Maybe sleep.
- 56:14No more would be an absolute classic.
- 56:17Have you done the Sleep? No More on this yet?
- 56:18No, they're fabulous. Joe short.
- 56:20And I've been trying to build that in for the last nine
- 56:23hundred years painting is but I think it's just because secretly
- 56:27she can't bear to go back and watch it.
- 56:30Well I'm I'm a fan of that one but you know every time I bit of
- 56:33sort of eye booger now falls out of my eye.
- 56:37Exactly. That's that's what's supposed to
- 56:39do. Scare the kids with the
- 56:40relatable things. Oh, boy, is this?
- 56:44That is this the wedding. Now, I wear the wedding.
- 56:45Yeah, we're at the wedding. We've been waxing lyrical too
- 56:48much about flux, and I'll go look at these, like, the way it
- 56:52has over all the flowers are so beautiful.
- 56:56How often do you see? Flowers and Doctor Who and big
- 56:58sunrises and things like that, it's just, it's also different.
- 57:03It feels. This is going to sound weird,
- 57:05but it makes history feel like an alien world in a way that
- 57:09were used when you see new Earth for the first time and you like
- 57:12Doctor, Who's on the nail, World for the first time.
- 57:14But this is, this is almost the same feeling because it looks.
- 57:17That's what the William Hartnell we're did.
- 57:19They made history feel as weird and exotic and dangerous?
- 57:24Yeah, Isaiah fact, sometimes far better than the alien planets,
- 57:27they could realize Bradley Walsh trying to restrain the tears,
- 57:33boy. A boy, he's great.
- 57:35And just like, I know they're in a studio somewhere in Cardiff at
- 57:38this point, but the light flooding through the the windows
- 57:41and stuff just really adds to it and You just, you don't for a
- 57:44second. Feel like you're not in India.
- 57:47No. And I think because everybody is
- 57:49so committed to taking this seriously.
- 57:53And I mean, seriously, it's in, it's dull, but like convincing.
- 57:58Yeah, yeah, I never did like, okay, let's go Hitler.
- 58:01I never want for they were in Berlin.
- 58:04No, there's that seizure allows get Dreadful CGI.
- 58:07Bit when River songs at the window and she's going on about
- 58:09type jumpers and go to a bar mitzvahs and all this politics.
- 58:13Mike, is anyone taking this seriously?
- 58:18No, I like fun. And I love comedy.
- 58:21So I'm like they're all my favorite stuff is called one but
- 58:24not the Wi-Fi family mind. I was one misfire.
- 58:28I said yeah it wasn't anything was also as well.
- 58:33Jodie Whittaker doing the ceremony.
- 58:36She's awesome. She's the only doctor that would
- 58:38convince doing that superbly absolutely like even With the I
- 58:43love Peter Capaldi's doctor, but I couldn't imagine this
- 58:46happening after just a few years before, Peter Capaldi,
- 58:48conducting that ceremony of Jesus Christ.
- 58:51Because he's representative of a, he is the like almost he's a
- 58:57British and Irish Scottish but he just feels like almost
- 59:00Colonial and I know he's not in his doctors, Punky and
- 59:02anarchistic but he just gives someone in the face to me but
- 59:07he'd look wrong in that situation and I think a lot of
- 59:10other doctors would as well. Right?
- 59:11Let's get this done. Do you love?
- 59:13Do you love her? All right.
- 59:15You fucking married. Let's go.
- 59:16Cara. Yeah, that's exactly it.
- 59:20It takes of this version of the doctor the first female doctor
- 59:24and this version of the show to be able to put Jody in this and
- 59:28she gives a stunning performance.
- 59:31I love the fact as well. She's celebrating love in all
- 59:36its forms. I mean and people will point to
- 59:39this and say oh that's whoa gestapo being so PC blah blah.
- 59:43Blah. No, take a good look at
- 59:45yourself, you're complaining about that because love does
- 59:49come in many different forms, you know, and it's worth
- 59:52celebrating. Yeah.
- 59:53And it's a beautiful thing and we know that this guy's about to
- 59:57die and this is going to be the happiest moment of his life
- 1:00:01before. Ultimately, he's killed and
- 1:00:03killed by people. He knows for people from their
- 1:00:07point of that map, but my yeah, got the Sheffield.
- 1:00:11Let's go. So exotic.
- 1:00:15I think while May is coming to Eastbourne things that as well.
- 1:00:20Well I can't wait to. I'm sure you'll do a podcast at
- 1:00:22some point while he's here. I want to know is review of
- 1:00:25Eastbourne. Okay.
- 1:00:27All right. Well I'll make him say it yeah.
- 1:00:29Yeah. Hi.
- 1:00:30Jesus Christ, I came all this way for this because it's a good
- 1:00:34for you. Got a tasty else all.
- 1:00:36Sorry, I'll just be quiet Peter hook.
- 1:00:45You know, as well cast as well. You know why I've heard people a
- 1:00:50friend of mine was just with his partner and he said that if his
- 1:00:54partner he thought that this was terribly, active, to all the
- 1:00:58guest characters were terrible. I'm like, am I watching the same
- 1:01:02program? What my girlfriend said?
- 1:01:04The same thing about this, and I've just, I've just never got
- 1:01:07it, but I think she likes to likes, Rusty Davis, and Jackie,
- 1:01:11Tyler. And that, that sort of a The
- 1:01:13show and why? Yeah.
- 1:01:16So did I. But I just think it's, I think
- 1:01:18this this is the complete opposite and it is more
- 1:01:22naturalistic and it's just, you know, they're also playing.
- 1:01:27Yeah, I just, I just think they're all really good actors
- 1:01:30and I refuse to believe that the performance is a subpar in any
- 1:01:34way. And what's important is, we need
- 1:01:36to believe that the two premanand brainer in love and I
- 1:01:40do, and we need to believe that. That prayer Emily's brother are
- 1:01:44related and I do. Yeah, and the muffler.
- 1:01:50She's brilliant. Well, bossy boots, while ass
- 1:01:52every mother ever going analyze Jackie.
- 1:01:53Tyler there. You know.
- 1:01:56Yeah, she's the only one, the only difference between her and
- 1:01:58Jackie. Tyler has it.
- 1:01:59She's not trying to Shag everyone.
- 1:02:01No, she should say something like, oh, you don't meet many
- 1:02:03prem's do? Yeah.
- 1:02:08Okay, so from this point on, yeah.
- 1:02:10Now I don't know, I think it's how episodes classic But from
- 1:02:13this point on where she goes in and says, You Killed the holy
- 1:02:16man and then he says they're coming and then the you think
- 1:02:20the are the music and the horse is coming in and then running
- 1:02:23away and he goes out to face them.
- 1:02:27This is fucking gold standard Doctor Who now yeah.
- 1:02:31It's gripping stuff. I was sat here today and I
- 1:02:34thought I'd watched it the other day and I thought I'm just going
- 1:02:36to put it on while I work just to sort of refresh my memory a
- 1:02:39little bit. And so I was sat here at this
- 1:02:42computer typing. Go away with it there and for
- 1:02:44the last sort of five or ten minutes I wasn't I was just
- 1:02:47looking at the screen the whole time because it is such an
- 1:02:51tastic stuff and yet you know what like it's so I watched it's
- 1:02:55doing something very different. Okay.
- 1:02:57So I'm not I will say that as a caveat for us like this.
- 1:02:59I was Time of the Doctor the other day.
- 1:03:01Okay. I couldn't be more chalk and
- 1:03:03cheese from this. You know, it's thrown in every
- 1:03:05Dalek Cyberman weeping angel silence.
- 1:03:08You know, dr. Naked dr.
- 1:03:10Bald Haruna Turk Okey, blah, blah.
- 1:03:14Yeah, it's literally running. Every fucking quirk in the book.
- 1:03:16Yeah. And it's the horniest Doctor.
- 1:03:18Who story ever. And it's a funny, fucking
- 1:03:20tedious. And I'm exhausted by the end of
- 1:03:22it. Whereas, this is clean and
- 1:03:24simple, and emotional and dramatic and like to try and
- 1:03:30explain my why. I love this era, more than Mafia
- 1:03:33Sarah is, because I like this approach.
- 1:03:36Yeah. I mean, I really hope that the
- 1:03:39new era. Doesn't I really hope we don't
- 1:03:44lose episodes like this. I also have am in no rush to see
- 1:03:47armies of everyone's favorite monsters again.
- 1:03:50Yeah. Yeah well I but I do think like,
- 1:03:57you know, Russell Davis are adults, who is probably my
- 1:04:00favorite are adults who ever. And I, you know, I think he
- 1:04:03could slow it down. I think human nature in the
- 1:04:05family of blood is. Yeah, like a beautiful drama.
- 1:04:10And he's right. He's mr.
- 1:04:12Television! He knows exactly what like he's
- 1:04:14not right. In the Doctor Who from 2005 or
- 1:04:17even 2006, 17, like he'll be writing something that's
- 1:04:21relevant and I think stories like this and I hope been a
- 1:04:24Patel comes back at some point. Hmm.
- 1:04:27Hi such a talent. I like I like I did love
- 1:04:30fugitive of the judoon but I think once you know the twist.
- 1:04:35Yeah loses loses. Some of its power.
- 1:04:38Whereas what those are Watch this over and over again and
- 1:04:41never loses its power, but Utopia loses its power.
- 1:04:44Once you know the twist as well of my script code, being it
- 1:04:49watching it. Very true, very true.
- 1:04:52We missed the shot earlier if the the men on the horses with
- 1:04:55their swords and guns out and stuff and it will, it, it feels
- 1:04:59threatening. But in a it's just a different
- 1:05:01threat from an army of Daleks as you were saying or an army of
- 1:05:04Cybermen. It's like, oh, these are people
- 1:05:06that are out for blood and there is nothing more terrible and
- 1:05:09Yeah, it is that same sort of danger that same sort of very
- 1:05:13human danger that I feel like at the end of the episode of
- 1:05:17crusade where Ella Kia Sister Barbara you know the only
- 1:05:20pleasure left for you is death, you know, and it's it but it's
- 1:05:25that sort of History's dangerous.
- 1:05:27We haven't done that for such a long time.
- 1:05:31This lovely slow motion shot here of them just approaching.
- 1:05:35And I think the lie that moves me the most is when he goes my
- 1:05:39little brother you know what has happened to you place at just so
- 1:05:44I think his performance he's maybe he might be my MVP you
- 1:05:47know for ya series 11. Really, really good is that it's
- 1:05:54surprisingly that that yeas doesn't get more to do in this.
- 1:05:58Yeah, she's a bit of a bystander in her own family's history but
- 1:06:02also she's like, it's that thing of she this isn't the history.
- 1:06:06She was expecting. Yeah.
- 1:06:07And while as viewers were learning more about the Indian
- 1:06:11partition for her, she's learning more about our family.
- 1:06:15I bought marked under, I never forgets her so there's always a
- 1:06:19reaction shot from under this is Effectively, it's her education
- 1:06:25system. Oh, here we go.
- 1:06:29Le is walking out to face up to them and it's these lovely sort
- 1:06:33of, it's just a little hand held shot here and of, as he goes out
- 1:06:37to face them and it just feels like it.
- 1:06:39Can you watch him? This serious drama show on a
- 1:06:41Sunday night? He's pretty clear Presley
- 1:06:43silhouetted. There is no harm in the shot as
- 1:06:46well and is the bit where he shot.
- 1:06:58Obviously, they're not going to show that because there's kiddie
- 1:07:00Wings watching this and we don't want not gonna sleep tonight,
- 1:07:04but you hear the shot and then you see, the doctors reaction.
- 1:07:07Yeah. And it's a great great Bit of
- 1:07:10Faith acting from Jodie. Whittaker.
- 1:07:11She walks away. Yeah, I completely agree.
- 1:07:14It's phenomenal. The look in his eyes here as he
- 1:07:17confronts these guys. And it's brother is just he's
- 1:07:20got like a single tear. Isn't he going down its face?
- 1:07:23Because there's an anger. How can people not like this?
- 1:07:26I don't understand. No, it's wild.
- 1:07:31Now I was once at a doctor who pub quiz and they ask people
- 1:07:35what their least favorite doctor of all time.
- 1:07:37And an Indian man, put his hands up and said he thought it was
- 1:07:40this. So I would love to know why that
- 1:07:43guy thought that. It was the worst one.
- 1:07:47Wow, well maybe so we don't. Yeah, I mean quite well.
- 1:07:51So mind you saying that. What on my podcast, the normal
- 1:07:53be praised, my friend Jack brought on his friend, Rohan,
- 1:07:57who isn't? Indian descent.
- 1:07:59And this is his favorite new series episode.
- 1:08:01Yeah. So I mean and and he goes on in
- 1:08:04our episode to explain how this is like Acura.
- 1:08:10So yeah, I mean, I don't know what this guy's beef was with
- 1:08:13it. I read it.
- 1:08:14I didn't have time to find out but just like, okay, so say the,
- 1:08:20the history was a bit muddy. The drama is still, there are,
- 1:08:23you know, it's, you know, I feel like it's about Again, we said
- 1:08:28it is this warm family story, and even if the history is not
- 1:08:32100% accurate, it's telling this, this this character lead
- 1:08:37story in a way that the backdrop Almost Doesn't Matter.
- 1:08:40Of course it does. It's a very important one.
- 1:08:42But you could tell a story like this on an alien planet and it
- 1:08:45would still probably have the same impact.
- 1:08:47Look at Jodi. Just shutting your eyes.
- 1:08:50That anyone that says she doesn't have like gravitas no
- 1:08:54fucking. They can fuck the fuck off.
- 1:08:56As far as I think my other Before her in Syria, my absolute
- 1:09:00our favorite bit for her. Is it Rosa, right?
- 1:09:03Where you guys goes? Are we leaving and she walked
- 1:09:05straight up to the camera goes, absolutely not.
- 1:09:08And all the hairs over a facial fat, Mega other way.
- 1:09:12Oh, God. Is that bit of all the faces?
- 1:09:15Oh, it's so moving. What a lovely idea for an alien
- 1:09:19race suit and also, the last of their kind and just go around,
- 1:09:23remembering people at the point of their death, they now they
- 1:09:27did miss a trick. Akin power of the doctor of not
- 1:09:30having them show up for her. Final, final scene, I would have
- 1:09:34been great when they're I've heard that, yeah.
- 1:09:38Boy. What a Galaxy for was always the
- 1:09:40monsters on evil. Yeah, the beautiful people are.
- 1:09:44There's a just yeah. Oh, there's the wiggly Tardis.
- 1:09:47Will he's at the top of the frame there, we just got but at
- 1:09:50this, this is what I will. He's come towards you like that
- 1:09:53and not five only for this bit. This is a terrible design.
- 1:10:01Honestly, I thought every grandmother she says to her in a
- 1:10:05minute, so it's because I love you to bits See ya, that's you
- 1:10:09watch call that Betty Ford. Maybe she's losing their
- 1:10:12marbles, I'm assuming it's like a nickname.
- 1:10:18Yeah. But such a lovely little scene
- 1:10:21just to bookend it with these. You know, the family drama in
- 1:10:25the current day. Again, not all writers would
- 1:10:28have done that. They would have just been about.
- 1:10:30Let's go back and see, you know, see my family in the past and
- 1:10:35you know, it's I love Father's day, but It's amazing what sort
- 1:10:38of 15 years can do for go back to your family history?
- 1:10:42Sort of story CJ. No I Father's Day is one of my
- 1:10:45least favorite new series. There is yeah, I really disliked
- 1:10:48it and I find the sequence at the beginning, where he takes
- 1:10:51her back and then he takes her back again.
- 1:10:54I'm like, are you mad right now? She's gonna get a load step out
- 1:10:58and stop it. Yeah, I found this.
- 1:11:02More agreeable because it's like not do something to save her
- 1:11:07grandmother's like a grandmother's, never in danger.
- 1:11:09We know she's there in the future like it's less
- 1:11:11irresponsible. Yeah I look at the very sort of
- 1:11:16stuff you slicing as well on both the but it's also the
- 1:11:20lighting. It's similar to the lighting,
- 1:11:22you get in the scenes in India. Like there's a purposeful like
- 1:11:26implication there from the the dop they've gone, right?
- 1:11:29This lighting has to be a certain certain sort of lighting
- 1:11:33to match it. And there we go.
- 1:11:36That was beautiful. It was a website, a doctor and
- 1:11:41you're right and and I think they he put this in the right
- 1:11:45part of the Season as well. Exactly, where it was needed
- 1:11:47you'd hat arachnids in the UK and thus oranga conundrum.
- 1:11:52Both of which have got down swimmingly with respectful and
- 1:11:56then he put in this very very stylish dramatic episodes.
- 1:12:02Yeah. So it's a peaceful episode
- 1:12:05kablam. Next week, scoffing, you get for
- 1:12:08in the trough. See this is where I was.
- 1:12:09Like, I'll yes you get this kablam which finders and it
- 1:12:12takes you away. I was like bring it on.
- 1:12:15I'm less enamored with kablam but I is it the pro Amazon
- 1:12:21message in there. It's not really.
- 1:12:23Because I do I find it's the fact that it's has such a mixed
- 1:12:27message but then isn't that Society little over like we all
- 1:12:30sort of anti Amazon but also they're really Athenian.
- 1:12:33So, use Amazon also. Well look, I'm gonna have to ask
- 1:12:39you now, to do the usual and name.
- 1:12:41It shouldn't be too difficult. Given all the positives.
- 1:12:43We've just stated three fabulous, things about demons
- 1:12:47that are put in job to convince those strange people out there
- 1:12:51that don't want to go and watch it watching.
- 1:12:54My first one is going to be the cinematography.
- 1:12:57I just think the lighting would like the colors.
- 1:13:01They choose for everything. It's just Absolutely beautiful.
- 1:13:04I thought I just don't think it gets much better than that at
- 1:13:06all in grade. My first one is going to be what
- 1:13:12I told you, the being the episode.
- 1:13:13Why this means so much to me. This is linked to a very
- 1:13:16profound moment in my life and it does remind me of it, but it
- 1:13:22reminds me of it in a very positive way.
- 1:13:26Strangely, you know, I'm reminds me of good times I had with my
- 1:13:31mom. Good conversations.
- 1:13:33Is and and her personal beliefs about deaf.
- 1:13:36So they are my first one. My next one is quite simple one,
- 1:13:41but I'm just going to go the setting like it took a brave,
- 1:13:46not brave. But just somebody with a new,
- 1:13:48take on Doctor Who to go. This is where I want to set a
- 1:13:50story and this is the story I want to tell there because they
- 1:13:55could have so easily been an alien invasion or the just
- 1:13:58happen to take place in India because we don't usually go to
- 1:14:01India. But That instead that they pick
- 1:14:05a piece of history and don't shy away from what a cruel and
- 1:14:08horrible time, it was marvelous and say were big so profound on
- 1:14:13this one. Okay.
- 1:14:14Yeah. I've made a few cock jokes as
- 1:14:16well, right? Yes, yeah, that's fine.
- 1:14:19People expect that, you know, but I am going to say, oh, good
- 1:14:25grief. Actually, I want to say Jodie
- 1:14:27Whittaker. Now I'm gonna say Jodie,
- 1:14:28Whittaker. I was going to say Bradley
- 1:14:31walked for that one scene, you know.
- 1:14:33But Jodie Whittaker perfectly tailored to this episode.
- 1:14:37She doesn't take the focus away from what's important that the
- 1:14:43doctor doesn't in. This is definitely part of an
- 1:14:46ensemble, but gets that fabulous moment where she gets to do the
- 1:14:52wedding ceremony. Yeah, perfect perfect.
- 1:14:55Jodi whisker flower and area. Discussing the power of love.
- 1:15:04Yes. No.
- 1:15:04She's she's fabulous and she's bringing in this.
- 1:15:07Yes. And my third and final one I was
- 1:15:10going to go for Graham to but I'm not I'm going to go for a
- 1:15:12dip I just think. Yeah as is issues the impetus
- 1:15:17for the whole story and like you say whenever she you cut back to
- 1:15:20her you get like even if she's not the most involved in the
- 1:15:25story. Her reactions are very truthful
- 1:15:27and honest so I'm going for Yasmin Khan.
- 1:15:31I want my last one is gonna be mad.
- 1:15:35It could be the location. I could be the music.
- 1:15:38It could be any of it couldn't. It could be that last.
- 1:15:40Brilliant. Dramatic, 10 minutes.
- 1:15:41But I'm actually going to say nanny is man who's into seems
- 1:15:49but makes an impact and I absolutely believe in that
- 1:15:52character and that performance and are still a crying shame.
- 1:15:56You know, she didn't turn up in resolution with a machine gun to
- 1:16:00take down that thought Alec, you know she would have been
- 1:16:02amazing. Oh it could have been there mr.
- 1:16:04The Wi-Fi family couldn't it, you know?
- 1:16:06Yeah. All those things would have
- 1:16:08helped. But I mean hopefully she'll get
- 1:16:11a big finish box set and the next, the next few years she
- 1:16:14could have been, like I've been playing online Scrabble with the
- 1:16:17wi is gone off somewhere? No, no she'sshe's great.
- 1:16:22As I mean, what can we say about this?
- 1:16:24Is it is brilliant. I genuinely would have no
- 1:16:28problem sitting down and watching it again.
- 1:16:31Right now, like I made that I loved it that much that I have.
- 1:16:35I mean this is technically the first time I've watched it today
- 1:16:39because I watched it once at the corner of my eye when I was
- 1:16:43working. And then I put it on again with
- 1:16:44the commentary because it's one of the few ones they've got a
- 1:16:47commentary on the Blu-ray. And then I've watched it again
- 1:16:51with you now and so, 3 times today, I don't quite know what
- 1:16:55that says, but, yeah, it's a lovely, lovely story.
- 1:16:59And I think everybody out there I should go out and enjoy it for
- 1:17:03what it is bizarrely. I like it's not want to go back
- 1:17:06to a lot and I've realized that serious Doctor Who's I don't
- 1:17:11really I, I watch over and over again I'm a doctor who fan, we
- 1:17:14watch these things 100 times, you know, beyond the point where
- 1:17:17we know every line and then we still watch it again.
- 1:17:20But like seriously, like case of androzani Genesis do things like
- 1:17:24that. I just like, they're never like,
- 1:17:25oh, you know, I'm just in the mood for Mass genocide to cheer
- 1:17:29me up. I'm just in the mood for, you
- 1:17:32know, racial politics but every time I do, watch this, it blows
- 1:17:38me away. And it reminds me it actually
- 1:17:40reminds me of when Sydney Newman create Doctor Who and said we
- 1:17:46could make this something for kids that impacts and educates,
- 1:17:53you know, and is proper drama for kids.
- 1:17:57Damn, it is you know, absolutely, I completely agree.
- 1:18:00It is it is right there. That original remix as chip nor
- 1:18:03said he took a lot from the doctors original remit and it is
- 1:18:07right there and I hope there are kids that saw that and learn
- 1:18:11something just about the history of India and indeed our, our
- 1:18:17part as a as the British nation and fucking it up.
- 1:18:21And basically, yeah, well, when I get much right, you know,
- 1:18:24honestly, I mean Britain produced you and me.
- 1:18:26Me. So I guess my bright future and
- 1:18:29Doctor Who and Doctor Who, here we go.
- 1:18:31Yeah. So we're people should be
- 1:18:33fucking grateful. This is those three things
- 1:18:35coming together entertainment and elucidation.
- 1:18:39Exactly. I don't know why.
- 1:18:41We don't have an Obe personally. Well I'm still I don't want to
- 1:18:46say the queen. I was it Charles honestly old
- 1:18:50sausage fingers. I was but you and I will be
- 1:18:59coming together. Next time to talk about another
- 1:19:03series. 11 story. Yes, we will.
- 1:19:05I'm going to be talking about it takes you away which is very
- 1:19:10exciting that that is my personal.
- 1:19:12Well, I would say it was my favorite on First Watch.
- 1:19:16I think now probably between this and demons of the Punjab
- 1:19:19and Rosa, and even the woman who fell to Earth, I think those are
- 1:19:24all vying for the same position, but I'm gonna have full favor.
- 1:19:26That's because you know what, I can't I mean this this is my
- 1:19:30favorite but I think this is my favorite area which her episode
- 1:19:34for the reasons are this way, but it takes you away and Rosa
- 1:19:38as well. I just think our Just absolute
- 1:19:41Classics to have three stonking Classics in one season.
- 1:19:46That's no, that's pretty good going, you know?
- 1:19:49Yeah, change amount of times. I've said to people that line of
- 1:19:53ribbons, you know, gets me in a lot of trouble from it, takes
- 1:19:55you away, when I reach one should be allowed, please hand
- 1:20:00me the most obscene things. You know, I love that character.
- 1:20:05So much me to massive alien, but I keep seeing him pictures that
- 1:20:09don't appear. I mean, who knows?
- 1:20:12Those things will appear on a Blu-ray box set in 20 years time
- 1:20:15and we'll find out who it was. It's fucking shit in that thing.
- 1:20:18I know, I know I'd love to say. I mean the mystery that
- 1:20:22surrounds this era and the secretiveness will only make for
- 1:20:26a more fascinating Glimpse now be some Eric's award in the
- 1:20:32production office, you know, way to spill the beans or it turns
- 1:20:36out. Jodie Whittaker was a tyrant.
- 1:20:38Yeah, I'd love one. Even more.
- 1:20:40Dude, she's Ellen DeGeneres. Thank you very much.
- 1:20:49You're very generous. Yeah, but will determine a time
- 1:20:53for, it's a sure way. I cannot wait meteors gonna be
- 1:20:56excited. Everybody.
- 1:20:58I mean, you're in for a rip-roaring ride when we take on
- 1:21:00all six episodes of the flux as well, five and a half hours of
- 1:21:03us. What more could anybody want?
- 1:21:06I can't wait and flux. You, you know it's gonna be
- 1:21:08absolutely You know, it's a dream come true, my baby
- 1:21:17anticlimax. Some people say that my eyes as
- 1:21:19well you know not me not me I lost episodes.
- 1:21:23Got that sontaran. You goes charcoal ads.
- 1:21:27What a guy? People say that Chris chibnall
- 1:21:30doesn't do comedy. Thank you very much.
- 1:21:41For your time, it's been. Thank you for having me any
- 1:21:44anytime Angela. I'm gonna go out, I'm going to
- 1:21:47play something to go out. You ready for this?
- 1:21:50Yeah, yeah. Well say goodbye but this is
- 1:21:54going to be the end of the episode.
- 1:21:55You ready? Okay, we go.
- 1:21:57I've got hope this plays, I'll be really embarrassed if it do.
- 1:22:58Love you, Mom. Love you, Mom.
