- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are in Psalm 133 and we
- 0:20are in the second to last of the song of a sense.
- 0:23And it's been kind of a journey that we've been walking through
- 0:27as we have been learning these road trip songs that the people
- 0:30of God sang 3 * a year as they were going up to the various
- 0:34festivals. And in a lot of the psalms that
- 0:37we were starting with in the songs of ascent, I think
- 0:39beginning in Psalm 120 or so, we heard a lot about trouble, about
- 0:44enemies, about difficulties, about the need for even God's
- 0:48vengeance. But now as we have gotten into
- 0:51some of these last psalms of a sense, we can see the joy that
- 0:58comes as the people of God gathered together, as they
- 1:01rejoice in the time that they get to worship, and as they look
- 1:06forward to everything that God both has done and will do in the
- 1:11future. So this Psalm is very short.
- 1:14It's only three verses, and it's got a wonderful truth for us.
- 1:18The inscription for this Psalm reads a song of a sense of
- 1:23David. He says how delightfully good.
- 1:27Or if you have maybe a more formal translation, it'll say
- 1:30something like how good and how pleasant when brothers live
- 1:35together in harmony. It is like fine oil on the head,
- 1:40running down the beard, running down Aaron's beard onto his
- 1:44robes. It is like the dew of Hermon
- 1:47falling on the mountains of Zion, for there the Lord has
- 1:51appointed the blessing life forevermore.
- 1:57All right, there are a number of things that we could learn from
- 2:02this particular passage of Scripture, but I just want to
- 2:04highlight a couple of things for US.
- 2:06Number one from verse one how delightfully good or how good
- 2:12and how pleasant when brothers live together in harmony.
- 2:17David here the writer of this Psalm.
- 2:19He knew what it was like to have some strife even within his
- 2:23family and with his brothers. You can read about that in First
- 2:27Samuel 1516 and 17, and probably someone's later on as well.
- 2:34Brothers here would not just be your literal, you know, other
- 2:39sons of your mother. This would be kind of shorthand
- 2:44for all of your extended family, your tribe, and even your
- 2:49nation. And here certainly we ought to
- 2:53think, not just in our families, is there harmony?
- 2:57Is there unity? But within our spiritual family,
- 3:02do we find harmony and unity? How does God describe when we
- 3:07get along together when there is harmony?
- 3:10You guys know I'm a musician. I love being able to play the
- 3:15piano or play the guitar. Getting to sing with other
- 3:19people and harmony is such an intricate part of music that a
- 3:24melody can be beautiful, but it can be made so much better by a
- 3:30harmony part coming in that I'm not going to get into music
- 3:35theory and all of that with you guys, but suffice it to say,
- 3:39harmony makes everything better. There is a unity.
- 3:42We are working together. We are not identical, but we are
- 3:46working together for this same goal.
- 3:50And God describes this as how good and how pleasant or how
- 3:55delightfully good. I was reading through some
- 3:59thoughts on this passage from Charles Spurgeon, a pastor from
- 4:03the 1800s in London, and he said this we can dispense with
- 4:08uniformity if we possess unity. Doesn't say how delightfully
- 4:13good when brothers live together in melody.
- 4:17It's here harmony, or the word unity.
- 4:21And as we sing together with our lives, so to speak, we're not
- 4:27all singing the same note. But when we are singing together
- 4:30in the same time, in the same key, even though we may be
- 4:33different notes, there are differences among us.
- 4:36God still works, so he says. We can dispense with uniformity
- 4:40if we possess unity, oneness of life, truth and way, oneness in
- 4:46Christ Jesus, oneness of object and spirit.
- 4:49These we must have, or our assemblies will be synagogues of
- 4:53contention rather than the churches of Christ.
- 4:56Spurgeon here highlights for us that there is a need for us to
- 5:00be unified because we have something to be unified in that
- 5:04is the person and work of Jesus Christ.
- 5:08And here there are many things in life that can be good that
- 5:12maybe aren't delightful. Like if I, you know, sin, I mess
- 5:17up and I have to fess up to Samantha and I have to say
- 5:21something like, yes, I did, you know, steal the cookies from the
- 5:24cookie jar. It is good for me to confess my
- 5:27sin. It's not particularly delightful
- 5:30for me in that moment to come clean that I have to say, yes, I
- 5:36did steal the cookies. There are things in life that
- 5:39can be delightful, that can be pleasant, but that maybe aren't
- 5:43good. You can think of what's said in
- 5:45Hebrews Chapter 11 where it says that Moses chose rather to
- 5:49suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the
- 5:53pleasures of sin for a season. So sin can be pleasant, and
- 5:58sometimes doing the right thing, the good thing, can be
- 6:01unpleasant for the moment. But when we live together in
- 6:05harmony and unity with others within our families, if in our
- 6:09marriage, within our church, it is delightful and it is good.
- 6:15It is a happy thing to be around and it is the right thing to do.
- 6:20And so may we have a desire for love and care and acceptance and
- 6:26not a like judgmental attitude, not a scarcity mindset of well,
- 6:34if so and so gets this or has this, then somehow that is my
- 6:39personal loss. And so I need to be against this
- 6:43person receiving good things or I need to be upset about the
- 6:48happiness that others are enjoying or because someone
- 6:52isn't doing something exactly the way that I would.
- 6:55I need to rally, you know, my tiny army against this other
- 7:00person because they're not doing things the way that I want to
- 7:03know. My friends, how delightfully
- 7:06good when brothers and sisters live together in harmony and
- 7:11unity. Choose to lay down your
- 7:14preferences for the sake of love within the local body.
- 7:19That doesn't mean just shut up and Stew on the inside.
- 7:23It means release the Stew and instead choose I'm going to
- 7:28actively participate in loving and caring for this other
- 7:33person. What else is unity?
- 7:35Like we see this in verse #2 unity.
- 7:38Harmony is like fine oil on the head.
- 7:41Now, we don't really do this in 21st century America.
- 7:45So let me take us back one more time to Leviticus.
- 7:50And you can. I bet you guys didn't know
- 7:53between last episode and this episode that there was going to
- 7:56be even more stuff on the book of Leviticus, but it's back
- 8:00again. So in Leviticus, when Aaron was
- 8:03named the high priest over all of Israel and his descendants,
- 8:07his sons would be the high priest that would pass down
- 8:11through the line of Aaron for as long as the Jewish high
- 8:16priesthood was there. Certainly now Christ is the much
- 8:19better high priest who is perfect, unlike Aaron and his
- 8:22descendants. But when Aaron was anointed high
- 8:27priest, there was a good smelling oil.
- 8:31People would pour the oil. It was a symbol of like
- 8:34abundance of of richness, of lots of plenty.
- 8:40That's what it was a picture of. And you would pour it on the
- 8:43head. And here I want to mention I'll
- 8:45read all of verse 2. That way you can get the full
- 8:47picture. It's like fine oil on the head
- 8:50running down on the beard, running down Aaron's beard onto
- 8:55his robes. So here this oil would have an
- 9:01incredible fragrance. It would smell really, really,
- 9:04really good. Now, I'm pretty sure if you took
- 9:07one of like the perfumes of nowadays and you poured that on
- 9:11someone's head, you would not get a good result.
- 9:15A person might get sick from that happening.
- 9:17That was not the case with this oil back here in Bible times.
- 9:22Instead, it would just be a wonderful fragrance that you
- 9:25would smell good for days on end and everyone that was around you
- 9:31would experience that good smell that was there.
- 9:35So here this fine oil is on the head and it's running down on
- 9:39the beard where there is unity, unity and love and care and
- 9:44harmony. It spreads further than just in
- 9:49one place. Just it's like on kind of the
- 9:51flip side, slander or gossip or fighting, it never just stays in
- 9:56one place. It always goes someplace else.
- 9:59So it is with unity and with harmony, when there is a fervent
- 10:03desire to be on the same team with someone else that you got
- 10:09my preferences don't matter. What matters is that we are team
- 10:13Jesus. We are team purchased by the
- 10:16Lamb. We are team storm the gates of
- 10:18hell and rescue you, you know, call to sinners that they would
- 10:22be rescued and find eternal life.
- 10:26When we are on that team, that spreads.
- 10:30Now, if you think of unity, just as I'm going to shut up and be
- 10:35mad on the inside until I boil over.
- 10:37Well, this verse doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 10:40But that's not biblical unity. Biblical harmony is not I'm
- 10:44going to retain all of my anger and aggression and and rage.
- 10:49No, my friend, if we're going to live in unity, it requires us
- 10:52to, from the heart, from the inside, say, God, I need you to
- 10:57change my affections, change if you will, my preferences or my
- 11:01desire to control others and instead let me be unified in
- 11:07harmony with other people. So he says it's like fine oil on
- 11:12the head, running down the beard, running down Aaron's
- 11:16beard onto his ropes. The mention of Aaron here is
- 11:21that unity, harmony has a special purpose.
- 11:25There is a special use for this oil.
- 11:28It's not just generic anointing oil.
- 11:30This is the anointing oil for the high priest.
- 11:33It's something that is set apart for God and for the work of God.
- 11:36And you and I, we are set apart for the the work of the one true
- 11:41God. We are priests in Christ
- 11:44Kingdom, that Kingdom of priests that he has made us to be.
- 11:48Spurgeon said this, this oil has a special use about it, this oil
- 11:52of unity, of harmony. For as by the anointing oil
- 11:56Aaron was set apart for the special service of Yahweh, Even
- 12:00so those who dwell in love are the better equipped to glorify
- 12:05God in his Church. He also said just like the oil
- 12:12didn't remain confined to the place where it first fell, but
- 12:15flowed down on the high priest hair and badooed his beard.
- 12:19I love that old English word badooed.
- 12:22He says. Even so, brotherly love
- 12:24descending from the head distills and descends, anointing
- 12:28as it runs, and perfuming all it lights upon.
- 12:34I also love this phrase that he had in here Christian affection
- 12:37knows no limits of perish or what church you're in a nation,
- 12:41sect, or age. Is the man a believer in Christ?
- 12:45Then he is in the one body, and I must yield to him an abiding
- 12:51love. We love other people because
- 12:53they are part of the same body that we are.
- 12:55I don't have a pinky that's mad at the ear for not being a
- 13:00pinky. Instead, I go praise the Lord
- 13:02that I have something that can and here because that benefits
- 13:06us all. And so here what a joy in verse
- 13:102, this call that our unity. It is beautiful, it's pleasing
- 13:15to God, it spreads out to others.
- 13:18It has a noble purpose and it keeps on going.
- 13:23And then in verse 3, as we close today, unity, harmony is like
- 13:27the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion for their
- 13:31Yahweh has appointed the blessing life forever more the
- 13:38the mount Hermon. I've mentioned it before.
- 13:41I think it showed up in book 3 of Psalms.
- 13:45Hermon was the northernmost mountain in Israel.
- 13:48It was a place of abject like idol worship before the
- 13:53Israelites were even there. It was a place of sacrifice to
- 13:57false gods. People viewed it especially
- 14:00because it was the highest mountain in that area.
- 14:04They said this is definitely where the skies and the land
- 14:09overlap, or if you will, the heavens and the earth overlap.
- 14:13And so the gods must live in this general vicinity.
- 14:17And so we're going to make sure that we do false worship.
- 14:20They they would say, we, we will do worship of the gods in this
- 14:25place. Well, God over and over through
- 14:28the Old Testament and especially through Psalms lays claim to
- 14:32Mount Hermon. He says, no, this doesn't belong
- 14:35to Baal. This doesn't belong to any one
- 14:37of the other gods in the area. Mount Hermon belongs to me.
- 14:43Every mountain belongs to me. And so here he says it is like
- 14:46the dew of hermone. So because it's so high up, gets
- 14:49a lot of precipitation, you can think even, you know, I grew up
- 14:53in Colorado. And so you have the really tall
- 14:55mountains. We'd call them fourteeners
- 14:58because they're 14,000 feet plus in elevation and so on those
- 15:03really high mountains you can pretty much always see at
- 15:05various times of the year, you know, snow on the mountains even
- 15:10when there's nothing down below. And so here this unity is like
- 15:15the dew of Hermon that it is constantly present, just showing
- 15:19up more and more and more. Even when there's not unity in
- 15:23other places, there is unity here in the people of God.
- 15:28May even though our country doesn't have unity, even though
- 15:32many of our families or many of our states or cities don't have
- 15:36a unity and a harmony in them, May you and I choose that within
- 15:41our marriage, within our family, within our church, there will be
- 15:45unity here. That we are going to be that
- 15:48high mountain above any of the other mountains and that people
- 15:52would look and they'd go, oh, I wonder what makes them able to
- 15:55get along? And the answer, of course, is
- 15:57Jesus Christ. So he says it's like the door
- 16:00with hormone falling on the mountains of Zion.
- 16:03So hormone is all the way in the north die in Jerusalem is kind
- 16:07of like central S South Central Israel.
- 16:11So here this isn't a direct path.
- 16:14There wasn't a like a it's not the same mountain range.
- 16:19So this isn't speaking literally.
- 16:21He's using a picture saying what comes from the highest peaks
- 16:26comes into this place of now the worship of God where God's
- 16:30people are gathered together. We are coming multiple times a
- 16:34year now to worship. We come to worship here in Zion.
- 16:37And so the unity from all across Israel is now coming into this
- 16:43place. And then David says this about
- 16:45Jerusalem. He says for there Yahweh has
- 16:48appointed the blessing life forevermore.
- 16:52That's what's so cool here. Jerusalem, this place where
- 16:55Jesus would give his life so that we could experience eternal
- 16:59life. And why Jerusalem?
- 17:02Why Zion? Well, it's because the Lord had
- 17:06determined that that would be the spot.
- 17:09And so we can look forward to that day when Jesus returns to
- 17:13Jerusalem and when he comes with all of his Saints with him.
- 17:18And what a day that will be. Well, I hope this little Psalm
- 17:22has been an encouragement to you.
- 17:24I know I was greatly encouraged through both reading it.
- 17:28And then as always, I will recommend to you guys Charles
- 17:32Spurgeon's work, The Treasury of David, The Treasury of David
- 17:37that walks through the Psalms. You should be able to find that
- 17:40online for free and 1000 different places.
- 17:43You can find a PDF of it or find videos on YouTube where people
- 17:47are, you know, reading through it or something.
- 17:50It's a tremendous resource. So I just wanted to recommend
- 17:53that to you. Thank you for tuning.
- 17:54Then see you next episode.
