- 0:00Welcome to Reformed Thinking, the deep dive designed to bring
- 0:04clarity and depth to essential Christian doctrine.
- 0:07Today we're immersing ourselves in a single remarkable statement
- 0:11from Christ. A statement that really just
- 0:13flips our human notions of loss and gain completely upside down.
- 0:17Yeah, exactly. We're in the upper room
- 0:19discourse, John, chapters 13 through 17, and the air is just
- 0:22charged. Oh absolutely.
- 0:24The events of the cross for the disciples, They aren't abstract
- 0:28theology. They're an hour away.
- 0:30And that tension is, I mean, that's the central narrative
- 0:32driver here, isn't it? It is, if you just imagine
- 0:36yourself as one of those men, your entire view of the future,
- 0:39of the Kingdom, of redemption, of your Messiah, it's all based
- 0:42on the physical presence of the King sitting right across the
- 0:45table from you. They're facing what we call the
- 0:47crisis of absence. Yeah, and their hearts are
- 0:49filled with Lipey, which is this heavy, overwhelming sorrow.
- 0:53And it's important to understand their sorrow isn't just grief
- 0:55over losing a friend. It's a profound theological
- 0:58crisis. Right.
- 0:59They're stuck. They're stuck in a political,
- 1:01visible messianic expectation. They believe the only way the
- 1:05Kingdom works is if the king stays, takes the throne, and
- 1:09visibly restores Israel. So when Jesus starts talking
- 1:12about going away, they hear the total collapse of the whole
- 1:14project. They are essentially clinging to
- 1:17the the flesh of the incarnation.
- 1:20That's a great way to put it. They see the vehicle of God's
- 1:23presence, the physical body of Christ, as the only necessary
- 1:27component for success. They're trapped.
- 1:29Completely. It's a redemptive historical
- 1:31limitation. They're living pre Pentecost, so
- 1:34they can only conceive of God's dwelling as, you know, localized
- 1:38like it was in the temple or now localized in Christ's physical
- 1:41body. So for them, absence means
- 1:43abandonment, period, right? And so we arrive at the central
- 1:47idea of the text. Jesus has to correct this
- 1:50misconception. He has to, he asserts, the
- 1:52absolute necessity of his bodily departure to inaugurate the
- 1:55administration, the Holy Spirit. And this new administration
- 1:58serves a dual function it. Does it vindicates the sun
- 2:01before the world, and it establishes and guides the
- 2:04people of God into completed truth?
- 2:06Which brings us to what is maybe the most counterintuitive
- 2:09proposition in all of Scripture. It really might be.
- 2:12In John 16.7, Jesus looks at his heartbroken followers who are
- 2:16convinced they are about to be left destitute, and he says, I
- 2:20tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away.
- 2:23How can the greatest moment of loss be the greatest moment of
- 2:27gain? That paradox is the theological
- 2:29gold we need to extract today. OK, let's start by really
- 2:33drilling down into that word advantage.
- 2:35As you said, this isn't some feel good sentiment.
- 2:37No, Jesus isn't saying you'll feel better later.
- 2:40He's making a claim about redemptive profit.
- 2:43The Greek word is sumpharai. Yeah, and sumpharai is key
- 2:46because it speaks to utility and net gain.
- 2:49It means it is profitable, or maybe even better, brings things
- 2:53together to a beneficial end. So it's a calculation of
- 2:56surplus. It is.
- 2:57Jesus is basically arguing, almost mathematically, that the
- 3:01theological profit of the Spirit's arrival is so enormous
- 3:04that it far outweighs the immediate, tangible and
- 3:07emotional deficit of his physical absence.
- 3:09The disciples we're seeing in a 0 sum.
- 3:11If Christ leaves, the game goes to 0.
- 3:13And Jesus says no, the game accelerates exponentially.
- 3:17I think we need to linger on that redemptive historical
- 3:20limitation you mentioned. What exactly was the boundary?
- 3:24You know, the limitation imposed by the Incarnation that made it
- 3:27so necessary for Christ to leave?
- 3:30The limitation was spatial finiteness.
- 3:33The Incarnation, as glorious and absolutely necessary as it was
- 3:37for the Atonement, bound the Son of God to the physical laws of
- 3:40space and time. Think about it practically.
- 3:43Right. If Jesus was physically walking
- 3:45the streets of Jerusalem, he could not be simultaneously and
- 3:48gallantly. If a believer was in Rome, they
- 3:51couldn't access him directly. His presence was singular, local
- 3:54and external. Exactly.
- 3:56While the disciples were with him, only a few could be with
- 3:59Him at any given moment. So the very success of the
- 4:01Kingdom, which is meant to be universal, spanning all nations
- 4:04and time, is fundamentally constrained by a physically
- 4:07present Messiah. It is.
- 4:09If Christ had remained, we would have a localized religious
- 4:12center, a historical shrine maybe, but not a global living
- 4:16body. And this is the radical shift
- 4:18marked by the Spirits administration.
- 4:20A huge shift. We're talking about the coming
- 4:22of the paracletos, the helper, the advocate.
- 4:26The Spirit is not bound by space or matter.
- 4:28The Spirit is omnipresent. He is.
- 4:30When Jesus ascends, he unleashes a divine presence that is not
- 4:35just with the disciples externally standing next to
- 4:38them, but in them. Fulfilling the deepest promise
- 4:42of the New Covenant. Of the Law written on their
- 4:44hearts. Jeremiah 31.
- 4:46Ezekiel 36. All of it.
- 4:48That distinction, external master versus internal power,
- 4:51that's everything. Yeah, it is.
- 4:52The advantage is moving from having an instructor who has to
- 4:56physically stand next to you to having the full, unconstrained
- 5:00divine power of the Godhead resident within your own heart
- 5:03and mind. He is simultaneously available
- 5:05to every believer everywhere across the globe.
- 5:07The physical absence is the prerequisite for spiritual
- 5:10omnipresence. And spiritual strength.
- 5:12The Church could not become the universal Organism it was
- 5:15designed to be until Christ vacated the local presence and
- 5:18commissioned the universal presence.
- 5:20It's the difference between having the King's ambassador in
- 5:22one distant court. And having the King's authority
- 5:25and nature resident in every citizen of the Kingdom, no
- 5:29matter where they are. But let's address the rigidity
- 5:32of this necessity. Because Jesus phrases this as an
- 5:35if then clause, it seems to lock the entire event into a kind of
- 5:39covenantal. Order.
- 5:41Oh, it does for. If I do not go away, the helper
- 5:43will not come to you. It sounds like a non negotiable
- 5:46step in the redemptive plan. It absolutely is.
- 5:49The Spirit's arrival is not some arbitrary event.
- 5:53It is directly tied to the completion of the Atonement in
- 5:56Christ's subsequent exaltation. So if Jesus does not go away, it
- 5:59means the work is not finished. Or not accepted this is.
- 6:03Where we need to get into the High priest analogy right to
- 6:06connect the dots for the listener.
- 6:07Yes, walk us through that Old Testament typology that dictates
- 6:11this sequence. Consider Yom Kippur, the Day of
- 6:13Atonement. The high priest had to perform
- 6:15this elaborate set of rituals. But the critical point is this.
- 6:19He couldn't just stand outside the veil and declare the people
- 6:22cleansed. He had to go in.
- 6:23He had to enter the Holy of Holies with the blood.
- 6:25Sprinkle the mercy seat. And only after the Father, as it
- 6:29were, had accepted the sacrifice, could the high priest
- 6:33re emerge and pronounce the blessing upon the people.
- 6:35So Christ, our great high priest, had to perform the
- 6:38atonement on the cross, His body being the veil that was torn.
- 6:42That's the sacrifice. But the work isn't fully secured
- 6:45until he passes through the heavenly sanctuary.
- 6:47Exactly. Hebrews 9 tells us Christ
- 6:49entered the heavenlies not with the blood of goats, but with His
- 6:53own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.
- 6:55He had to present his finished work not just in the historical
- 6:59event of the Crucifixion, but in the heavenly court of the
- 7:01Ascension. And only upon his full
- 7:03glorification, which John 7.39 says was necessary.
- 7:07Could the Spirit be poured out? Acts 2.33.
- 7:11The Spirit is the official, verifiable seal of God's
- 7:14acceptance of the sacrifice. This is a heavy theological take
- 7:17away. Then to wish for Christ to have
- 7:19remained on earth, dwelling permanently among us without the
- 7:22ascension, is functionally to wish for an incomplete
- 7:25salvation. That's right.
- 7:26We would have the sacrifice, but not the seal of acceptance.
- 7:30We have a Savior who died, but we would lack the assurance that
- 7:34the Father accepted that death as sufficient payment.
- 7:37The Spirit is the down payment, the guarantee, the airborne of
- 7:42our inheritance. And that payment can't be
- 7:44dispersed until the purchase price Calvary is fully paid and
- 7:48the transaction accepted by God the Father in Heaven.
- 7:51The spirits arrival proves the ascension was successful.
- 7:54It does, and this framework gives us a vital safeguard
- 7:57against theological drift, because it defines the Spirit's
- 8:00mission as utterly christological.
- 8:02Right, Jesus says, I will send him to you, which reinforces the
- 8:06unity of the Godhead, often discussed through the Filioc
- 8:09doctrine. That the Spirit proceeds from
- 8:11the Father and the Son. And why does that matter to the
- 8:13average believer? Because it ensures the Spirit
- 8:15doesn't arrive with some unrelated agenda.
- 8:18He doesn't show up to start a new religion or speak of
- 8:21himself. His entire ministry, both to the
- 8:24world and to the church, is focused on testifying to and
- 8:27applying the finished work of the Sun.
- 8:29The Spirit is set by Christ to speak about Christ, apply
- 8:33Christ's merits, and glorify Christ.
- 8:36So that structure anchors the church against seeking novel
- 8:40experiences or supposed fresh revelations that are detached
- 8:45from the historical Jesus. Or detached from the established
- 8:48scriptures. If someone claims the Spirit is
- 8:50telling them something new or contradictory or something that
- 8:53diminishes the Sun, they're fundamentally misunderstanding
- 8:56the Triad mission. The Spirit is the spirit of the
- 8:59ascended Lord. His function is defined by the
- 9:01victory of the Sun and directed by the Sun's authority, now
- 9:05established at the right hand of the Father.
- 9:07So the ascension wasn't a retreat, it was a deployment.
- 9:09That's it. It placed Christ in the position
- 9:12of supreme authority from which He now directs the infinite
- 9:15universal ministry of the Spirit for the growth and expansion of
- 9:18the Kingdom. We weren't abandoned.
- 9:19We were equipped. So the necessity of Christ's
- 9:22departure gives rise to this incredible universal ministry of
- 9:25the Spirit. But when Jesus defines what the
- 9:28Spirit will do, he doesn't start with comfort.
- 9:30No, he starts with confrontation.
- 9:33We move from the intimacy of the Upper Room to a divine courtroom
- 9:37drama played out across the face of the earth.
- 9:40And that shift is jarring. The Spirit is not introduced
- 9:44here primarily as a gentle counselor, but as a fierce
- 9:47divine prosecuting attorney. The language is unequivocally
- 9:51forensic. The governing verb is Alexei.
- 9:54I know that verb is often translated softly as convict,
- 9:57but that word just doesn't carry the punch of the Greek, does it?
- 9:59It does not. Alexei means to cross examine,
- 10:03to expose, to refute with irrefutable evidence, or to
- 10:07bring to light the error of 1's ways such that they are left
- 10:10without defense. The Spirit's mission is to
- 10:12prosecute the cosmos. Not just the physical earth, but
- 10:15the organized system of rebellion against God, the anti
- 10:19God establishment of human culture and governance.
- 10:21Which is the ultimate reversal of fortunes just days before the
- 10:25Cosmos, represented by the Sanhedrin and Pilots Court,
- 10:28presumed to judge Jesus and condemned him as a malefactor.
- 10:31Right. And the Spirit arrives on the
- 10:33scene to reopen the case and demonstrate that the world, not
- 10:36Christ, stands condemned. The world is the defendant.
- 10:40The Spirit dismantles the world's self justification,
- 10:43proving it fundamentally wrong on three essential counts, sin,
- 10:47righteousness and judgement. OK, let's start with count 1,
- 10:51sin defined, and verse 9. This is where the Spirit focuses
- 10:55his legal firepower concerning sin.
- 10:57Because they do not believe in me.
- 10:59Now wait a minute. If the Spirit's work is
- 11:01conviction, why doesn't he focus on obvious moral failings?
- 11:05Murder, theft. Greed.
- 11:07Because that lets the world off the hook for generalized
- 11:09corruption. How so?
- 11:10Well, that is exactly the point that shatters natural human
- 11:13moralism. The world is perfectly happy to
- 11:16acknowledge sin in the form of ethical lapses.
- 11:19It feels good to denounce a corrupt politician or a violent
- 11:22criminal. Natural conscience can grasp
- 11:24those things of. Course, but the Spirit ignores
- 11:27the symptoms and goes straight to the singular root offense,
- 11:30the cosmic treason, the rejection of Jesus Christ.
- 11:33So the indictment is singular. It is the Spirit exposes that
- 11:37the worst sin, the damnable from that is not that you
- 11:39occasionally lie or cheat, but that you have refused to bow the
- 11:43knee to the Son of God and accept his redemption.
- 11:45This exposes the depth of human depravity, which is what
- 11:48reformed theology understands as total depravity.
- 11:51Exactly. Unbelief is not an intellectual
- 11:53struggle or a lack of evidence. It is a moral refusal, a willful
- 11:57rebellion against the truth revealed in Christ.
- 12:00So the self-righteous man who says I am a good person, I
- 12:03donate to charity. I just don't think Jesus is
- 12:06necessary. He's the primary target of the
- 12:08Spirit's prosecution. He is the Spirit strips away the
- 12:11illusion of neutrality. There is no middle ground.
- 12:14You are either covered by Christ's righteousness or you
- 12:17are guilty of the singular sin of rejecting Him.
- 12:20The Spirit's conviction is the necessary law work that must
- 12:23precede grace. It's the divine hammering that
- 12:26reveals that self justification, self-made morality, and
- 12:29self-reliance are all futile attempts to avoid the judgment
- 12:33rendered against unbelief. And the implication for the
- 12:36Church's methodology here is huge.
- 12:38Massive if the Spirit's job is to indict on the basis of
- 12:41Christ, the church's job is to preach Christ plainly refusing
- 12:45any pragmatic approach that tries to sidestep this
- 12:48fundamental confrontation. We have to preach Christ and his
- 12:51claims, trusting the Spirit to apply the indictment of
- 12:54rejection. That's our job.
- 12:56OK, now we move to count 2 righteousness established in
- 12:59verse 10 concerning righteousness because I go to
- 13:02the Father and you see me no more.
- 13:05The world operates on a completely internal standard of
- 13:08righteousness. If I feel good about my actions,
- 13:10I must be righteous. How does the ascension radically
- 13:14redefine that? Well, the world thought they had
- 13:16defined righteousness by executing Christ.
- 13:19They believe their system, their law, their consensus was right
- 13:23and Jesus was wrong. But the ascension is the
- 13:25father's public definitive verdict overturning the world's
- 13:28judgment. It is the Father received Christ
- 13:31into glory as the spotless. 1 The acceptable substitute.
- 13:34The only truly righteous man, The righteousness that matters,
- 13:37is defined by Christ's position at the right hand of God.
- 13:40So the standard shifts instantly from human performance to
- 13:43Christ's completed performance. It has to.
- 13:45The Spirit uses Christ's exaltation to prosecute the
- 13:47world by proving that human righteousness is non existent,
- 13:50futile and unacceptable. Romans 3.1 in.
- 13:53That is the conviction if the only truly righteous person is
- 13:57the one seated in heaven. Then you, the defendant, possess
- 14:00no inherent righteousness. The Spirit forces the world to
- 14:04see that all human attempts at morality are insufficient to
- 14:07stand before a holy God. So this indictment prepares the
- 14:11Sinner for the doctrine of justification.
- 14:13It does. We are convicted of having no
- 14:15righteousness of our own, which drives us to seek the only
- 14:18available alternative, the alien righteousness of Christ imputed
- 14:22to us by faith. Exactly.
- 14:24The Spirit convicts us of the need for an external
- 14:27righteousness. And notice that clause, and you
- 14:29see me no more. Yes, that emphasizes that the
- 14:32basis of our standing is secured in heaven by faith, not by
- 14:35sight. Not by physical proximity or
- 14:37rituals. We stand righteous because of
- 14:40the status of our advocate in glory, whom we cannot see, but
- 14:43whose righteousness is credited to us.
- 14:45The Spirit testifies that the standard has been set and only
- 14:49Christ meets it. Let's move to the final count.
- 14:51Count 3, Judgment executed, Verse 11 Concerning judgment.
- 14:55Because the ruler of this world is judged, the common conception
- 14:58of judgement is a distant future event.
- 15:00The final day. Right, but the Spirit testifies
- 15:03that judgement is already a historical fact.
- 15:05This is critical for understanding spiritual warfare.
- 15:08The world operates under the illusion that Satan, the ruler
- 15:12of this world, is a free agent, powerfully directing events and
- 15:16potentially winning the war. But the spirit arrives to
- 15:19declare the verdict has already been rendered.
- 15:21The decisive judicial moment occurred at the cross.
- 15:25Colossians 2.15 says Christ disarmed the rulers and
- 15:28authorities and triumphed over them by the cross.
- 15:31So Christ's death was not just an atonement for humanity, it
- 15:34was the legal condemnation of the devil.
- 15:37Yes, and the Spirit's job is to testify to this accomplished
- 15:40fact. He shatters the world's illusion
- 15:43of autonomy and spiritual power. If the Prince of Darkness is
- 15:46already judged, disarmed and cast out, then his subjects,
- 15:50those who operate under the cosmos, cannot possibly escape.
- 15:53They can't. The inevitable future execution
- 15:56of that judgement is certain. Judgement is not coming.
- 15:59It has arrived in principle and its final application is
- 16:02certain. This conviction is designed to
- 16:03be severe, but it's also salutary.
- 16:06Of course, it drives the desperate center to flee the
- 16:09sinking ship of Satan's Kingdom. If the captain is already
- 16:13condemned, the vessel is doomed. And for the church, this
- 16:16conviction brings immense courage.
- 16:18It does. When we experience hostility
- 16:21from the cosmos, we interpret it through the lens of Christ's
- 16:24finished victory. The enemy rages not because he
- 16:28is strong, but because his time is short and his defeat is
- 16:31sealed. The Spirit reminds us that our
- 16:33fear should not be of a condemned enemy, but of the one
- 16:36who holds the keys of death and Hades.
- 16:39So to synthesize this section, the spirits ministry to the
- 16:42world is relentless and judicial.
- 16:44He unveils reality as God sees it, forcing the world to answer
- 16:48to Jesus Christ regarding sin, righteousness and judgement.
- 16:51He dismantles every pretense of self righteousness or
- 16:54neutrality. So, having established the
- 16:56Spirit's outward prosecutorial ministry, we now pivot to his
- 17:00inward pedagogical work specifically toward the
- 17:03apostles. Right.
- 17:04This is the process by which Christ's witnesses are
- 17:06stabilized, equipped, and finally instructed with the full
- 17:09scope of new covenant revelation.
- 17:11And Jesus begins with this remarkable statement of merciful
- 17:14restraint in verse 12. I still have many things to say
- 17:18to you, but you cannot bear them now.
- 17:20This is Christ the Great Teacher, holding back the
- 17:22curriculum because the students just weren't ready.
- 17:25It wasn't a flaw in their character.
- 17:27It was, again, a limitation of redemptive history.
- 17:30They lacked the interpretive key.
- 17:32The context of the empty tomb and the ascended king.
- 17:34Exactly. Imagine trying to explain
- 17:36justification by faith alone, the abrogation of the ceremonial
- 17:41laws, or the unity of Jew and Gentile in the Church before the
- 17:45cross had even happened. Those doctrines would have made
- 17:47absolutely no sense to men who were still operating under the
- 17:50assumption that the Kingdom would be an earthly, visible
- 17:54Jewish monarchy. Defined by temple law and ritual
- 17:57adherence, right? The truth was too heavy, brain
- 18:00and Greek too substantial for their confused and sorrowful
- 18:03shoulders. So the Spirit's coming was
- 18:05necessary not just to emotionally support them, but to
- 18:08complete the revelation. Turning the raw events of the
- 18:10Passion, Resurrection and Ascension into the authoritative
- 18:14completed doctrine of the New Testament.
- 18:16That brings us to the pivotal promise in verse 13.
- 18:19When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the
- 18:22truth. The Greek verb hodaga say
- 18:25implies active leading, like a shepherd leading sheep along a
- 18:28specific mapped path. And the object is Pasanton,
- 18:32Aleithian. All the truth or the whole
- 18:34truth? The use of the definite article
- 18:36is crucial here, isn't it? It is.
- 18:38It points to a specific finite body of revelation, the
- 18:42definitive new covenant mystery. The Spirit is not leading them
- 18:45endlessly. He is leading them to the
- 18:47destination, the completeness of the Apostolic witness.
- 18:51And this is the argument for the unique Commission of the
- 18:53apostles. It has to be.
- 18:54This wasn't a blanket promise for every subsequent believer to
- 18:57receive new, authoritative information.
- 19:00This was an assurance that the foundation of the church would
- 19:03be laid completely and securely. Absolutely.
- 19:06We rely on Ephesians 2.20, which says the Church is built on the
- 19:10foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself
- 19:13being the cornerstone. The apostles were the
- 19:15foundational organs of divine revelation.
- 19:18They didn't invent A theology after Jesus left.
- 19:20No, they were guided by the Spirit of truth to interpret
- 19:24Christ's person and work with divine authority, thereby
- 19:27producing the New Testament Scriptures.
- 19:29Which leads us directly to the doctrine of the sufficiency of
- 19:31Scripture and the cessation of the revelatory gifts.
- 19:34It does. If the Spirit guided the
- 19:36apostles into all the truth, what does that say about anyone
- 19:40claiming to receive new authoritative truth today?
- 19:44It says the Canon is closed. If the body of revealed truth is
- 19:47complete, then seeking new revelations or fresh prophecy
- 19:51implies that the Spirit failed to deliver all the truth to the
- 19:55apostles. Or that God's redemptive plan is
- 19:57somehow perpetually unfinished and requires continuous updates?
- 20:01Exactly. We stand on the conviction,
- 20:03stated clearly in the Westminster Confession, that the
- 20:06former ways of God's revealing His will unto His people have
- 20:09ceased. So the spirits ministry today is
- 20:11not revelatory. It doesn't give new content to
- 20:14Scripture, but it is illuminative.
- 20:16Right. It helps us understand and apply
- 20:18the old truth already given. We are not living in an age of
- 20:21perpetual uncertainty chasing subjective impulses.
- 20:24We stand on a stable, complete and authoritative foundation.
- 20:27The stability is essential for the church's witness, and Jesus
- 20:31immediately provides the critical guardrail against
- 20:34subjectivism in the rest of verse 13.
- 20:36He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he
- 20:38hears, he will speak. This is the theological fail
- 20:41safe. How does this safeguard the
- 20:44Church against mysticism, where people claim personal guidance
- 20:47detached from the written word? It ensures the Spirit operates
- 20:51entirely within the unified economy of the Trinity.
- 20:55The Spirit is not an independent voice competing with the Sun or
- 20:59generating private innovations, or contradicting the historical
- 21:02revelation given through the Sun.
- 21:03Whatever the Spirit speaks must be consistent with and
- 21:06reflective of the mind and will of the Father and the Son.
- 21:10So if a supposed spiritual impression contradicts the
- 21:13Apostolic word, it is immediately disqualified.
- 21:17The Spirit binds the Church to the authority of Christ, not
- 21:20away from it. That point cannot be overstated.
- 21:22The proof that the Spirit is at work is conformity to the
- 21:25revealed Christ. And furthermore, the Spirit will
- 21:27declare to you the things that are to come.
- 21:29This isn't just immediate direction.
- 21:31It points to the great arc of salvation history.
- 21:34This encompasses the full unveiling of the mystery of the
- 21:37Church, the union of Jew and Gentile, and the comprehensive
- 21:41eschatological revelations found in books like the Apocalypse of
- 21:45John. The Spirit ensures the Church is
- 21:47anchored in the certainty of future victory by giving a
- 21:50prophetic road map. He guides them not only through
- 21:52the immediate doctrinal challenges, but through the
- 21:54entire sweep of the consummation of the ages.
- 21:58The Spirit secures the stability of the Church by delivering
- 22:01Pasana and Taikalian, securing the finished cannon, and
- 22:04protecting it from internal drift toward novelty.
- 22:07OK, so we have meticulously traced the argument from the
- 22:10necessity of Christ's absence to the precision of the Spirit's
- 22:13work as prosecutor and guide. Now we have to translate this
- 22:16high theology into our daily lives.
- 22:19What does this deep dive demand of the learner?
- 22:22Let's apply these truths to our intellect, our affections, and
- 22:25our actions. Head, heart, and hands.
- 22:27Good. Let's start with the head
- 22:29believing the sufficiency of Scripture.
- 22:31The duty here is intellectual discipline.
- 22:34If we genuinely believe the Spirit guided the apostles into
- 22:37all the truth, our mind must be convinced that the Canon is
- 22:40closed. We have to reject the modern
- 22:43craving for continuous extra biblical revelation and the
- 22:46subjective impulses that lead people astray like winds of
- 22:49doctrine. That means actively fighting the
- 22:52desire for novelty. We must stop treating the Bible
- 22:55as an insufficient or incomplete guide.
- 22:57How can believers practically fight that temptation toward
- 23:00mysticism in their search for God's will?
- 23:03It requires A theological conviction and a practical
- 23:05routine. The conviction is this.
- 23:08God has spoken fully in His Son. Hebrews 1.2.
- 23:12There is no more authoritative word to be heard than the word
- 23:14already written. In the practical routine.
- 23:17Is to prioritize the systematic, careful study of the faith once
- 23:20for all. Delivered to the Saints from
- 23:22Jude 3. We have to recognize the
- 23:25spirits. Illumination today happens
- 23:27through the written word, not independent of it.
- 23:30So when seeking guidance, the first, second and third question
- 23:32must be what has scripture already revealed on this topic?
- 23:35We trust the objective word over our subjective feelings.
- 23:38That clarity grounds our thinking.
- 23:40Now let's move to the heart, loving and finding comfort and
- 23:44security. The ache of Christ's physical
- 23:46absence is real. It is we are human, we desire
- 23:50sight and tangible proof. We feel that light be the
- 23:53disciples felt. And we must discipline those
- 23:55feelings with the truth of John 16.7.
- 23:58It is to your advantage. The Spirit's presence is
- 24:01superior to the physical presence we desire.
- 24:03We have to cultivate gratitude for the indwelling Spirit, the
- 24:07resident God. The security is profound because
- 24:09you were never alone. The Paraclete is within you,
- 24:12always available, always counseling, always guiding,
- 24:15always convicting. This truth also liberates the
- 24:17believer in witness and evangelism.
- 24:20If the Spirit is the cosmic prosecutor, what does that
- 24:23freedom look like for the fearful St.
- 24:25It removes the paralyzing anxiety that the success of
- 24:28conversion depends on our personal eloquence or
- 24:30manipulative techniques or our persuasive skill.
- 24:33We are freed from relying on worldly strategies.
- 24:35Completely. We are not the prosecutors.
- 24:38We are merely bailiffs. Reading the divine indictment,
- 24:40the gospel. We state the charges of sin,
- 24:43point to Christ's righteousness, and declare the certainty of
- 24:47judgement. The Spirit sovereignly and
- 24:49mysteriously does the convicting work.
- 24:52We rest in his sovereign ability to break the hard heart and
- 24:55Pierce the conscience. Our task is faithfulness, not
- 24:58results. That is a massive paradigm
- 25:01shift, moving the focus entirely from human effort to divine
- 25:05action. So finally, let's address the
- 25:07hands. Doing this requires a
- 25:09reformation of methodology, both in our individual lives and in
- 25:12the corporate church. For the unbeliever, the
- 25:14application is urgent. Agree with the Spirit's verdict.
- 25:17The indictment is clear and singular unbelief.
- 25:20Don't strive for moralism. Don't try to clean up your life
- 25:22first or prove yourself worthy. Exactly.
- 25:25The Spirit has exposed that righteousness is found only in
- 25:27the exalted Christ. Your duty is to repent of the
- 25:30specific sin of rejection and plead guilty, trusting entirely
- 25:34in the alien righteousness of the Advocate Jesus Christ.
- 25:37And for the corporate church, we must reject pragmatism entirely.
- 25:40We must. The modern church often defaults
- 25:43to the philosophy that if it works, if it attracts crowds, if
- 25:47it increases our budget, it must be true.
- 25:50That pragmatism is a direct affront to the Spirits Defined
- 25:53ministry. It is the Spirit is defined here
- 25:56as a prosecutor and a guide into truth, not a patron of
- 26:00entertainment or therapy. The temptation is to replace the
- 26:03hard work of prosecuting sin, calling unbelief cosmic treason,
- 26:07with palatable social activism or therapeutic advice to make
- 26:10people feel good. But Jesus gave the Spirit for
- 26:13conviction, not comfort of the unconverted.
- 26:16Therefore, right obedience demands return to the ordinary
- 26:19means of grace. Absolutely.
- 26:20The Church must rely on the means.
- 26:22The Ascended Christ instituted the reading and preaching of the
- 26:26Word, the right administration of the sacraments, and prayer.
- 26:29These are the channels to which the Spirit illuminates and
- 26:31applies Christ's work. Lord's Supper is a tangible
- 26:34example. It vividly acts out the truth of
- 26:37this deep dive. We proclaim His death and
- 26:40departure until He comes again, while simultaneously
- 26:43participating in His spiritual presence and nourishment through
- 26:46the Spirit. Our methodology must reflect
- 26:49that we trust the Spirit to work through the written word, not
- 26:52through human innovation. This brings us back to the
- 26:54ultimate test of the spirits activity found in verse 14.
- 26:57He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it
- 27:00to you. The spirit is defined by his
- 27:03modesty. He intentionally draws attention
- 27:05away from himself. So a truly spirit filled church
- 27:08is not marked by chaotic emotionalism or novel doctrines
- 27:12or loud claims of personal authority.
- 27:14It is marked by a place where Scripture is opened, sin is
- 27:16exposed by the law, and Christ is exalted, clearly presented as
- 27:20the only righteousness for condemned sinners.
- 27:23The Spirit's entire operation is designed to apply the redemption
- 27:25purchased at Calvary, making the historical Christ a present
- 27:29effectual reality for His people.
- 27:32We began with the disciples heavy sorrow and have finished
- 27:34with the church's immense advantage.
- 27:37Christ's departure was a necessary strategic advance,
- 27:40securing a fuller spiritual and omnipresent reality for His
- 27:43people. And we understand the precision
- 27:45of the Spirit's ministry. He is the ruthless prosecutor of
- 27:48the rebellious world, securing conviction on the three great
- 27:51fronts of sin, righteousness, and judgement.
- 27:54And he's a reliable guide of the Church, ensuring the completion
- 27:57and security of the authoritative candidate of
- 27:59Scripture. And that security leaves us with
- 28:01this final thought. We live in a world that demands
- 28:04tangible evidence, sight and worldly proof.
- 28:07We are tempted daily to rely on human persuasion and pragmatic
- 28:10strategies to grow the Kingdom. But if the Spirit's work is
- 28:14sovereign, if he has already exposed the futility of the
- 28:17world's self justification, and if he has already sealed the
- 28:20doom of the ruler of this world, what practical, tangible steps
- 28:24does the learner need to take this week to align their witness
- 28:27in their life solely with the inevitable verdict of heaven?
- 28:30What must you stop relying upon What human method or strategy to
- 28:33truly trust the invincible sword of the Spirit, which is the
- 28:36sufficient Word of God?
