- 1:56Speaker 1: will join us at 4.30. All right, B, you had
- 2:00Speaker 1: a little cooler day today. Did we go 50-something minutes
- 2:02Speaker 1: today on the walk?
- 2:04Speaker 3: No, I didn't make it because I was.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I had to do work, which was lame.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, always is.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And then that work led me to rage. I was
- 2:17Speaker 3: filled with rage at you. I told you I wanted
- 2:21Speaker 3: to punch your face into a jelly, and it really
- 2:24Speaker 3: interrupted my walking.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So are you saying that I inadvertently messed your walk
- 2:30Speaker 1: up today? Yep. I'm putting it on you. This isn't good.
- 2:33Speaker 1: This isn't good. I'm going to owe you big time
- 2:35Speaker 1: for that. But everything else is good. Yeah. Okay, good.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And I'm sure it's an empty house there in the building. Oh, yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I think there's.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Maybe three other people here.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and your boss, including, who thought that ten people
- 2:51Speaker 1: played on a football field?
- 2:53Speaker 3: I forgot about that one.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, ten people. All right, we've got a lot to
- 2:56Speaker 1: get to. So Ben Portnoy, who worked for Sports Business Journal,
- 3:00Speaker 1: is now over at Fox Sports, and we'll have to
- 3:02Speaker 1: try to get him on just to talk a little football.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But he says... First up, he says a dive into NIL,
- 3:08Speaker 1: the market, and how two years after the $ 20 million
- 3:11Speaker 1: roster won a title, spending has ballooned. He said, how
- 3:14Speaker 1: did we get there? We asked industry people and got
- 3:17Speaker 1: industry answers. So I do want to get into this
- 3:19Speaker 1: piece by Ben Portnoy now with Fox Sports. And, of course,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you can find him on X at BPortnoy15. CBS Sports
- 3:29Speaker 1: has ranked. I know you guys are tired of rankings, right?
- 3:32Speaker 1: We have just about ranked ourselves into oblivion this offseason.
- 3:36Speaker 1: But we're almost there, right? You play some games this week,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and then when we get back next week, we'll have
- 3:41Speaker 1: nothing but game stuff to break down from Ole Miss, Louisville,
- 3:44Speaker 1: Mississippi State, Louisiana, Monroe, LSU, Clemson, all the game stuff
- 3:48Speaker 1: to break down next week. And we'll get away from
- 3:50Speaker 1: the list, and we'll get into the actual stuff. But CBSSports.com
- 3:54Speaker 1: has ranked the SEC quarterbacks by Brad Crawford. He has
- 3:58Speaker 1: Trinidad Chambliss. I think I said it right that time.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Chambliss is the number one quarterback in the SEC. Arch Manning,
- 4:03Speaker 1: number two. Sam Leavitt, three. Gunnar Stockton, four. And he
- 4:07Speaker 1: gives his top ten, and it goes Sellers, Mateer, Keylon Russell, Alabama,
- 4:11Speaker 1: Byron Brown, Marcel Reed, and Faison Brandon at Tennessee. No
- 4:16Speaker 1: Camario Taylor inside the top ten. Again, I think that
- 4:20Speaker 1: he probably placed his way into this list. It's just
- 4:22Speaker 1: which one does he unseat, so to speak. College football
- 4:26Speaker 1: playoff leaders are expected to meet soon to discuss a
- 4:29Speaker 1: policy barring teams with professional players from postseason competition. courtesy
- 4:35Speaker 1: of Ross Dellinger. So we will get into that story.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And you rarely see college athletics all go in the
- 4:46Speaker 1: same direction on issues, right? I mean, how many playoff
- 4:52Speaker 1: spots do we need? Well, it's 12, it's 16, it's 24.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Nobody gets on the same page about anything. Most everybody
- 4:59Speaker 1: got on the same page with the Brendan Sorsby issue,
- 5:02Speaker 1: the sports gambling issue in sports. And now almost everybody
- 5:06Speaker 1: outside of LSU and Lane Kiffin is getting on this
- 5:10Speaker 1: train about the NFL players coming back. So now the
- 5:12Speaker 1: college football playoff jumps in as well. We are at
- 5:16Speaker 1: Heinz Junior College today. It's game day here in Raymond. 6.30 kick,
- 5:20Speaker 1: Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfro Stadium. So you want
- 5:24Speaker 1: to come out and watch a little football tonight, you
- 5:25Speaker 1: can do that. We'll have it right here on The Zone, 105.9. And,
- 5:28Speaker 1: of course, we'll have a pregame starting at 6. Kick
- 5:31Speaker 1: starts at 6.30, so we'll be here. for the rest
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the day with you. All right, attorneys amend their complaint.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Remember what's happened. LSU, they basically said no mas to
- 5:45Speaker 1: a vote yesterday. They abstained from a vote yesterday with
- 5:48Speaker 1: the SEC, and it was a 15-0 clean sweep. No
- 5:53Speaker 1: players from the NFL come to the SEC. LSU didn't
- 5:56Speaker 1: vote on it. Then representatives and attorneys and agents of
- 6:01Speaker 1: said players that wanted to come to the SEC, back
- 6:04Speaker 1: from the National Football League, started talking lawsuits immediately. And
- 6:09Speaker 1: you knew that was coming. Lawsuits were coming. Lawsuits were coming.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Here's some of the news today, less than an hour ago.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Courtesy of Ross Dellinger, attorneys amend their complaint in the
- 6:18Speaker 1: Kentucky eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA. Because remember, you've got
- 6:23Speaker 1: several lawsuits, and it's hard to keep up with all
- 6:25Speaker 1: of them. You've got the Colorado lawsuit. You've got the
- 6:27Speaker 1: Louisiana lawsuit. You've got now the Kentucky lawsuit. You've got
- 6:31Speaker 1: individual player lawsuits and now you're fixing to have a
- 6:34Speaker 1: whole new batch of lawsuits because NFL players want to
- 6:38Speaker 1: come back to college but attorneys amend their complaint in
- 6:40Speaker 1: the Kentucky eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA requesting a judge
- 6:45Speaker 1: hold the NCAA in contempt of court for allowing the
- 6:48Speaker 1: SEC to issue a new policy that impacts the eligibility
- 6:52Speaker 1: of 13 athletes including Missouri to Kentucky transfer Mark Mitchell
- 6:57Speaker 1: now I've not heard this gentleman's name I don't even
- 6:59Speaker 1: know who Mark Mitchell is some of you may I
- 7:01Speaker 1: have no idea who he is. But now we have
- 7:03Speaker 1: a new lawsuit. Also, attorney Ryan Downton tells Yahoo Sports,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and he was in some of this yesterday, that the
- 7:09Speaker 1: players believe the SEC's new policy and, quote, draconian penalties. Man,
- 7:17Speaker 1: these people play on words so much. I mean, when
- 7:20Speaker 1: you say draconian, I think really bad, right? Like, I
- 7:25Speaker 1: think Beaver has just locked me in the basement there
- 7:29Speaker 1: at the office and He's cut the AC on. He's
- 7:32Speaker 1: got water dripping in my face like on a slow drip.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He's got Taylor Swift, some song on a loop, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: he's getting me to basically give him my birthrights, everything
- 7:42Speaker 1: that I own. That would be draconian, just something that's very,
- 7:46Speaker 1: very bad. I don't know how these are draconian penalties,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but they're going to, say, interfere with their constitutional right
- 7:55Speaker 1: to have access to the court system. as the sanctions
- 7:59Speaker 1: may prevent schools from accepting the players onto rosters. Tons
- 8:04Speaker 1: of word salad going on here. Tons of it. These
- 8:08Speaker 1: draconian penalties interfere with the constitutional rights to have access
- 8:12Speaker 1: to the court system. Now, you have access to the
- 8:14Speaker 1: court system, but here's where we've gotten to is that
- 8:18Speaker 1: rules are no longer rules. Rules are made to be broken,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and then rules are made to generate lawsuits, is what
- 8:27Speaker 1: has happened. I mean, but to call this a draconian
- 8:30Speaker 1: penalty is really laughable by some of these attorneys, specifically
- 8:34Speaker 1: this Ryan Downton. I doubt he's a guy you'd want
- 8:37Speaker 1: to go have dinner with. Also, more comments from attorneys
- 8:42Speaker 1: involved in the Louisiana lawsuit suggesting they will continue their
- 8:44Speaker 1: legal fight and take aim at the SEC and its
- 8:46Speaker 1: new policy. Quote, what Greg Sankey has done is a
- 8:51Speaker 1: complete violation of state law. Now, I am not an
- 8:54Speaker 1: attorney and I am not a, you know, a, you know, a,
- 8:57Speaker 1: Professional in state law. But I don't know how this
- 9:01Speaker 1: interferes with state law. Because to my knowledge, and I
- 9:04Speaker 1: know you've got to get down the rabbit hole, there's
- 9:06Speaker 1: no laws on the books about, you know, you can
- 9:08Speaker 1: come back or can't come back. But, again, they're going
- 9:11Speaker 1: to try to find a loophole here. Hey, we've got
- 9:13Speaker 1: a lot of FCS football games tonight. And if you're interested,
- 9:17Speaker 1: here's some of them. You've got Maine at Towson. That's
- 9:21Speaker 1: going to be on Flow Sports. I don't know that
- 9:22Speaker 1: anybody here has that. Or MNMT. Stony Brook is at
- 9:27Speaker 1: Delaware State. Old, let's see, Ohio Dominican at Moorhead State.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Anderson at Furman. You do have Mississippi Valley State on
- 9:37Speaker 1: ESPN Plus tonight taking on Nichols on the road. Southern
- 9:40Speaker 1: Illinois at West Florida. You also have Winona State at St. Thomas.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And you have HCU at Southeastern Louisiana. There's a lot
- 9:50Speaker 1: of games in the FCS tonight. LIU at North Dakota.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And many, many more. If you want a little football
- 9:57Speaker 1: If you're not able to get some junior college. or
- 10:00Speaker 1: high school, Pearl is hosting Madison Central tonight, by the way.
- 10:03Speaker 1: So you've got a big one over in Pearl tonight
- 10:05Speaker 1: between the Jags and the Pirates. That should be fun.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And you can get some FCS action out there tonight. Hey,
- 10:12Speaker 1: we're brought to you by Clinton Body Shop.

- 10:58Speaker 2: Good afternoon. Good afternoon.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And welcome back to the Afternoon Drive with Jake Wimberley,
- 11:03Speaker 1: where he's talking about anything and everything that's Mississippi sports. No,
- 11:06Speaker 1: great afternoon. Right here on ESPN 105.9 The Zone and online. Worldwide.
- 11:09Speaker 1: On The Zone, 105.9.com. Thursday edition of your program brought
- 11:39Speaker 1: to you by friends at Taylor Power. Go to taylorpower.com. Also,

- 11:45Speaker 1: running when it matters most, and that's during the storms.
- 11:47Speaker 1: We're starting to get some rain. There'll be some other
- 11:49Speaker 1: storms populating out. Make sure that you stay ready with
- 11:52Speaker 1: Taylor Sudden Service. That's commercial and residential generators. Go to taylorsuddenservice.com, 601-922-4444.
- 11:56Speaker 1: That's Taylor Sudden Service. Michael Katz will join us. In
- 12:04Speaker 1: the next segment, make sure, if you want to text us, 601-885-3776.
- 12:07Speaker 1: That is the Cowboy Maloney's text line. All right, let
- 12:10Speaker 1: me get back into, we have this FCS games tonight. Also,
- 12:14Speaker 1: in June, the college football playoff discussion, or the committee
- 12:19Speaker 1: discussed participation rules, such as banning teams that rostered a
- 12:23Speaker 1: player who bet on his or her team. Now the
- 12:26Speaker 1: topic is back to, should the playoff committee disqualify those
- 12:29Speaker 1: rostering a player who signed a pro contract? So again,
- 12:32Speaker 1: we'll get into this as This now has hit the
- 12:35Speaker 1: college football playoff committee. SEC presidents reaffirmed their inter-conference transfer policy,
- 12:42Speaker 1: prohibiting players moving within the league outside of the portal
- 12:46Speaker 1: per a copy of a Sankey memo. Violators are subject
- 12:49Speaker 1: to half-a-season suspension, 50% of school's sports budget, and removal
- 12:53Speaker 1: of vote privilege. So you can't transfer from one school
- 12:57Speaker 1: to the other. I mean, the SEC is really buttoning
- 12:59Speaker 1: up this transfer business here amid everything going on. with
- 13:03Speaker 1: professional athletes want to come back. Uh, the big 12
- 13:06Speaker 1: has set things in motion as well. They have, uh,
- 13:10Speaker 1: put out their exact language, exact language of what their
- 13:13Speaker 1: rules are going to be. Professional athlete roster restriction. No
- 13:16Speaker 1: member institution shall be permitted to have an athlete on
- 13:19Speaker 1: its roster competing in a conference champ, a conference competition
- 13:23Speaker 1: in a sport. Uh, if after the athletes initial full-time
- 13:28Speaker 1: enrollment at a, at a collegiate institution, the athlete has
- 13:31Speaker 1: in the same sport, uh, if they have declared for
- 13:34Speaker 1: the draft or supplemental draft of a professional sports league
- 13:38Speaker 1: and did not timely withdraw from the draft, been listed
- 13:41Speaker 1: at any time on the roster of a professional sports
- 13:43Speaker 1: league or signed a contract with any professional sports league
- 13:46Speaker 1: to provide athletics service. This rule will apply independently of
- 13:52Speaker 1: the status of NCAA eligibility determinations. And so it goes
- 13:58Speaker 1: on to talk about professional sports leagues and what defines
- 14:02Speaker 1: professional sports leagues, because I think you do. We all
- 14:05Speaker 1: know what this means, but you have to spell it
- 14:06Speaker 1: out for these knuckleheads. If not, you'll get sued. So,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I mean, it mentions, you know, the United football, the UFL,
- 14:11Speaker 1: the NFL, the CFL, the NBA, the major league baseball world,
- 14:16Speaker 1: the minor league baseball system, the national women's soccer league.
- 14:19Speaker 1: So they, they list everything out there in this statement saying, Hey, basically, look,
- 14:26Speaker 1: if you have gone and signed a pro contract, you
- 14:29Speaker 1: cannot come back. You know, if you have tested the
- 14:32Speaker 1: waters and you pass the time to really, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 1: come back and you can't come back. So the big
- 14:39Speaker 1: 12 has set this in motion. NFL news, courtesy of
- 14:42Speaker 1: Ian Rappaport, the Seahawks and star Leonard Williams have agreed
- 14:45Speaker 1: to terms on a three-year $ 90 million extension to keep
- 14:47Speaker 1: him in Seattle for the foreseeable future. The three-time pro
- 14:50Speaker 1: bowler made a one last, uh, made one last year
- 14:53Speaker 1: and is still in his prime. Um, If he sees
- 14:57Speaker 1: the life of his contract, he'll make upwards of $ 250 million. Also,
- 15:02Speaker 1: news out of Texas A & M camp, Marcel Reed.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Reviews are high. Supposedly he's had a great camp down
- 15:10Speaker 1: in College Station. Quote, he just continues to stand out
- 15:13Speaker 1: and make plays. One source on Marcel Reed and then,
- 15:19Speaker 1: of course, this wide receiving group at Texas A & M.
- 15:22Speaker 1: So we'll see if they can throw it a little
- 15:23Speaker 1: bit this year. Marcel Reed, if he is... taking that
- 15:26Speaker 1: next step that he has talked about he needs to take.
- 15:30Speaker 1: North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is not expected to
- 15:33Speaker 1: be with the team to open the season on Saturday
- 15:36Speaker 1: in Dublin versus TCU. The son of head coach Bill
- 15:40Speaker 1: Belichick has been on indefinite medical leave since early August.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And remember, they've got three problems going on at once,
- 15:50Speaker 1: probably four if we include Belichick's girlfriend. You've got the
- 15:54Speaker 1: general manager who's on a suspension. and a leave due
- 15:57Speaker 1: to an HR issue. You've got Steve Belichick, who is
- 16:00Speaker 1: not with the team right now. You've got the NCAA
- 16:03Speaker 1: investigating the North Carolina football program for breaking a lot
- 16:07Speaker 1: of rules. They're going to Dublin. And I'm telling you,
- 16:10Speaker 1: the easiest win that you're going to have, probably this year,
- 16:14Speaker 1: is this weekend. And that number continues to climb. We'll
- 16:17Speaker 1: talk to Rafael Esparza about that in the next segment.
- 16:19Speaker 1: That number has jumped two and a half to three points.
- 16:21Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, let me go check that–
- 16:24Speaker 1: You can go to AmeristarCasino.com forward slash Vicksburg and get
- 16:28Speaker 1: the bet builder. Yeah, that number's sitting right at nine,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and it was at seven to seven and a half
- 16:33Speaker 1: just a couple days ago. That number may hit ten
- 16:36Speaker 1: or ten and a half by kickoff on Saturday at 11.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So a lot of money coming in on TCU. That
- 16:42Speaker 1: total's at 47. So play the total if you want,
- 16:46Speaker 1: but I would definitely take TCU to cover in that ballgame.
- 16:50Speaker 1: All right. South Carolina's Shane Beamer. decided he needed to
- 16:54Speaker 1: talk before the season started. And he tells Chris Lowe,
- 16:58Speaker 1: remember now, South Carolina, I don't know the attraction to
- 17:04Speaker 1: South Carolina. You know, I just don't. You know, you
- 17:07Speaker 1: get out in the world in everyday life, and you
- 17:10Speaker 1: see two people, you know, you see, let's just say this,
- 17:12Speaker 1: a group of guys has a buddy, and maybe he's
- 17:15Speaker 1: not the best-looking guy. And, you know, by what every
- 17:19Speaker 1: guy thinks of, but he's constantly always dating the best-looking girls.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And then the buddies say, man, I just– I don't know, man.
- 17:26Speaker 1: What does this dude– what's going on with him? He's
- 17:28Speaker 1: got money. What's going on? I mean, how is he
- 17:30Speaker 1: doing this? I mean, what's going on? This is South Carolina.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Everybody keeps asking the question, except South Carolina isn't winning anything.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Everybody keeps picking South Carolina every year. They're the dark
- 17:42Speaker 1: horse this. They're the college football playoff that. But they're
- 17:46Speaker 1: not– the difference in the analogy I use is they're
- 17:48Speaker 1: not winning anything. They're not dating anybody. They're just– it's
- 17:52Speaker 1: just talking. about how good they are. Shane Beamer decides
- 17:54Speaker 1: to talk. There's a very quiet confidence on this team
- 17:58Speaker 1: heading into the season. We showed in 24 that we
- 18:01Speaker 1: can accomplish everything here. All right, so Shane Beamer, I'm
- 18:05Speaker 1: going to put this in the Shane Beamer box because I,
- 18:08Speaker 1: nor Beaver, have forgotten last year in late November during
- 18:12Speaker 1: the college football playoff committee release, Shane Beamer, for some reason,
- 18:15Speaker 1: they wanted to interview him, a four-win coach last year,
- 18:19Speaker 1: And he said, I can't wait to see where we
- 18:21Speaker 1: are this time next year in the college football playoff poll.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Have not forgotten that. Will not forget it unless something happens.
- 18:28Speaker 1: So he said, and I quote, in 24, we showed
- 18:32Speaker 1: that we can accomplish everything here. Well, let's go look
- 18:36Speaker 1: at South Carolina in 24. What in the hell is
- 18:38Speaker 1: he talking about? Let's see. South Carolina. South Carolina in 24.
- 18:43Speaker 1: There they are. 24. 24. They went 9-4, 9-4. They
- 18:51Speaker 1: started 2-0. They had a three-point loss to LSU. They
- 18:55Speaker 1: beat Akron. They had a two-point loss to Alabama. Ole
- 19:00Speaker 1: Miss beat them handily, 27-3. And they lost to Illinois
- 19:04Speaker 1: in a bowl game. So they finished 9-4. They were
- 19:06Speaker 1: 5-2 at home, 4-2 on the road, and they were
- 19:08Speaker 1: 5-3 in the conference. So, you know, nine wins is
- 19:12Speaker 1: a good season. But it's not the national championship. It's
- 19:17Speaker 1: not the college football playoff. They didn't even play for
- 19:20Speaker 1: the SEC championship. Yet he says, we showed in 24
- 19:23Speaker 1: we can accomplish everything here. Well, you didn't accomplish everything
- 19:27Speaker 1: in 24, Shane. What is everything? Because you won nine ballgames.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I've tried to like this guy. I
- 19:36Speaker 1: really have. You know, when he came to South Carolina,
- 19:38Speaker 1: he was funny, and everybody started comparing him to, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 1: the new age Steve Spurrier, and he'll say anything, and he's,
- 19:45Speaker 1: Handsome young man, and he's gritty, and he's got moxie.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I don't like this guy. I'm just going to be honest.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I mean, it's nothing personal. I'm sure he's a good guy.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I don't like his mouth. I don't like his words,
- 19:55Speaker 1: if I'm being honest. We showed in 24 we can
- 19:58Speaker 1: accomplish everything right here. You didn't win the title, Shane.
- 20:02Speaker 1: You didn't even play for the SEC championship. I don't know.
- 20:06Speaker 1: He needs to stop talking, but he won't. Texas is
- 20:10Speaker 1: Arch Manning. Ohio State, Julian Sayer. Both are making upwards
- 20:13Speaker 1: of $ 2. 5 million this year. Reports listed on On3. com. But
- 20:20Speaker 1: that is not the highest quarterback pay based on On3.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Darian Mintz, the quarterback at Miami, is making $ 6- plus million.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And Dante Moore is making $ 5 million, along with Trinidad Chambliss.
- 20:32Speaker 1: And Sam Leavitt at LSU is making $ 4. 5 million. Josh
- 20:35Speaker 1: Hoover at Indiana is making $ 4. 5 million. We're brought to

- 22:39Speaker 1: on ex-Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. Covers the SEC and Ole Miss. Katz,
- 22:43Speaker 1: thank you, brother, for taking some time. How are you?
- 22:45Speaker 2: I'm good. I'm just glad that it's almost time to
- 22:47Speaker 2: talk about actual games than all the what's called extracurriculars.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I said the same thing earlier. I was given another
- 22:55Speaker 1: list of top quarterbacks in the SEC, and I said, hey,
- 22:58Speaker 1: I know you guys are listed out like we have
- 23:00Speaker 1: filled the cup on lists, So next week we actually
- 23:03Speaker 1: get to get into ballgames. We quit this season for
- 23:07Speaker 1: a while, don't we?
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's nice. And, you know, it seems like
- 23:10Speaker 2: there's always something going on in the courtroom or in
- 23:15Speaker 2: those sorts of situations that have to do with college
- 23:17Speaker 2: football and still somehow have to do with Ole Miss.
- 23:20Speaker 2: And you can't get away from it. So I'm glad.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I think there's some FCS games on tonight if you're
- 23:25Speaker 2: a sicko like me. But I know that the USC
- 23:28Speaker 2: alumni– my season personally starts on saturday and i would
- 23:32Speaker 2: say i'm excited for it but i'm more worried than
- 23:35Speaker 2: anything now.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You should be excited should be a good year uh
- 23:37Speaker 1: hopefully for sc and the big 10 all right so
- 23:40Speaker 1: any thoughts on man what it just you know we
- 23:43Speaker 1: run through these things in the off season or even
- 23:45Speaker 1: when it's in the real regular season and then it's
- 23:48Speaker 1: like we hit fast forward on the tape this this
- 23:50Speaker 1: whole week's been a blur with NFL players wanting to
- 23:52Speaker 1: come back, and then the SEC and the Big Ten
- 23:55Speaker 1: and Notre Dame and now the Big 12 and the
- 23:56Speaker 1: ACC coming together essentially but separately and saying, hey, no
- 24:01Speaker 1: players are coming back. We're not doing that. Well, now
- 24:03Speaker 1: we've got lawsuits coming out. Any thoughts on this and
- 24:06Speaker 1: how it maybe pertains to even Ole Miss? I would
- 24:09Speaker 1: assume Ole Miss is in agreeance with the SEC because
- 24:12Speaker 1: outside of Kiffin and LSU who abstained from a vote yesterday,
- 24:16Speaker 1: everybody in the SEC voted for this 15-0.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting because just as soon as guys are
- 24:26Speaker 2: ruled eligible and they're being put on waivers in the NFL,
- 24:31Speaker 2: which again is just insane. If you had told me
- 24:34Speaker 2: this concept five years ago, I would have been like,
- 24:36Speaker 2: what are you even talking about? That a guy who
- 24:38Speaker 2: had signed an NFL contract was thinking about coming back
- 24:41Speaker 2: to school for another season. But just as soon as
- 24:45Speaker 2: that happens, The backlash started. It was like, okay, well,
- 24:48Speaker 2: how long is this going to last? It lasted like
- 24:50Speaker 2: a day or two. And then other than the conference,
- 24:54Speaker 2: it stepped in. But now, of course, you've got lawsuits,
- 24:57Speaker 2: and injunctions are probably on the way. That seems to
- 25:03Speaker 2: be the– that's kind of the– I've gotten very– I'm
- 25:07Speaker 2: very knowledgeable with injunctions these days, given the last six months. But, yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 2: it's crazy. It just seems like there's always something new. And,
- 25:18Speaker 2: you know, I mean, think about it. If you're, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 2: North Carolina and TCU kick off on Saturday in Ireland,
- 25:25Speaker 2: and it's like, yeah, I don't know if this affects them, but, like,
- 25:29Speaker 2: what if there's a situation where, like, one of the
- 25:31Speaker 2: guys on the team is ineligible? Or, like, maybe are
- 25:34Speaker 2: they looking like– there's just so many, like, what-ifs right now,
- 25:37Speaker 2: and nobody really knows exactly what– what's right and what's
- 25:43Speaker 2: wrong and what's good and what's bad for the sport.
- 25:47Speaker 2: It's crazy. And then, of course, you know, it comes
- 25:48Speaker 2: back to Ole Miss because, you know, Lane Kiffin was
- 25:51Speaker 2: trying to get some former Ole Miss players who had
- 25:55Speaker 2: signed NFL deals or been in camps to come to LSU. And,
- 26:00Speaker 2: you know, Pete Golden's been pretty clear about, you know,
- 26:02Speaker 2: his stance that, you know, they put this team together
- 26:06Speaker 2: and unless it was an injury situation, They feel pretty
- 26:09Speaker 2: good about the guys that they put together in the offseason. But, man,
- 26:15Speaker 2: there's always something. It's like the few minutes that we're
- 26:18Speaker 2: going to be on the phone, I'm waiting for another alert,
- 26:21Speaker 2: and I have no idea what it's going to be.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Michael Katz talking college football. It is Thursday. Make sure
- 26:26Speaker 1: to get him on X. And, of course, check him
- 26:28Speaker 1: out at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. Yeah, I agree
- 26:31Speaker 1: with you. It's just like what's coming next, what's coming next.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Let's shift gears and talk Ole Miss. Now I'm sure
- 26:36Speaker 1: everybody's getting ready for game week, have been probably for
- 26:39Speaker 1: the last several days, staffers probably for the last several weeks.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Any injury news to report, or is everything kind of
- 26:45Speaker 1: clear there on the injury front?
- 26:47Speaker 2: When talking to Pete, I guess it was Monday, he
- 26:53Speaker 2: said that the depth had kind of been tested a
- 26:56Speaker 2: little bit during camp on the offensive line and the corners,
- 27:00Speaker 2: I believe is what he said. Nothing that was going
- 27:03Speaker 2: to be like long-term or like that, but I know
- 27:06Speaker 2: they had had to kind of work around some stuff.
- 27:08Speaker 2: But it sounded like when it came time for the
- 27:12Speaker 2: games to actually begin that they were going to be
- 27:15Speaker 2: just fine. So, again, I think, you know, obviously we'll
- 27:19Speaker 2: see when they line up and, you know, what's rumor
- 27:23Speaker 2: and what isn't. But it sounds at least like they
- 27:27Speaker 2: should be in a pretty good spot.
- 27:30Speaker 1: When you look at certain guys that maybe have, you know,
- 27:34Speaker 1: just the notes that you guys have, the accessibility that
- 27:37Speaker 1: you have, and I know it's limited for most camps,
- 27:39Speaker 1: any players that have stood out maybe that, you know,
- 27:42Speaker 1: maybe at the beginning of camp you didn't have them
- 27:44Speaker 1: on the radar, but guys maybe now that you're hearing about?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's, I mean, I think probably the
- 27:52Speaker 2: biggest one has been Therese Davis, who's going to take
- 27:55Speaker 2: over at left tackle. You know, almost tackled last year.
- 27:58Speaker 2: were really, really good. I think they gave up a
- 28:00Speaker 2: combined two sacks, Jaden Williams and Diego Pounds, all season long.
- 28:05Speaker 2: They were really good on the edges, and so replacing
- 28:09Speaker 2: both of them is no easy task, but Thread Davis
- 28:11Speaker 2: is a guy who transferred from Maryland. He started two
- 28:15Speaker 2: games as a true freshman there and then came over
- 28:17Speaker 2: here and didn't play a ton last year, battled some
- 28:20Speaker 2: injuries and whatnot, and he's only been playing football a
- 28:22Speaker 2: few years. His dad is Ricky Davis, the former NBA player,
- 28:26Speaker 2: so he was a basketball guy for a lot of
- 28:29Speaker 2: his career, so he's really just sort of getting started.
- 28:32Speaker 2: He's been a guy that, to a man, everyone has
- 28:35Speaker 2: said glowing things about him and the job that he's done.
- 28:40Speaker 2: I think that receiver-wise, there's been a few guys who
- 28:44Speaker 2: have come up. We know what Deuce Alexander is and
- 28:48Speaker 2: the impact that he can have. Jontae Cook's name has
- 28:50Speaker 2: come up a lot, Horatio Fields, both transferers. And then
- 28:53Speaker 2: freshman Samari Reed, or I guess retrofreshman, sophomore, I'm not
- 28:58Speaker 2: sure what the classification is anymore. But he's a young player.
- 29:03Speaker 2: He's come up in conversations a lot. And then I
- 29:08Speaker 2: think on the defensive side, just really that safety room
- 29:13Speaker 2: has been talked about in pretty high regard. They brought
- 29:16Speaker 2: in some new guys, Edwin Joseph from Florida State and
- 29:19Speaker 2: Shreve Denson. from Florida. I think they feel really good
- 29:23Speaker 2: about that, and in talking to both of them at
- 29:26Speaker 2: various points over the last few weeks, it sounds like
- 29:30Speaker 2: they really like what they've assembled in there.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Michael Katz talking Ole Miss football. Rebs get ready for
- 29:36Speaker 1: the season opener next week versus Louisville, Thursday edition of
- 29:39Speaker 1: the program. Any other notes before I ask you one
- 29:43Speaker 1: SEC question? Any other notes to pass along for Ole
- 29:46Speaker 1: Miss camp?
- 29:48Speaker 2: Not really. I mean, I think it's, you know, I
- 29:52Speaker 2: think everybody, including the guys in camp, are anxious to
- 29:57Speaker 2: see another team and not line up against the same
- 29:59Speaker 2: guys that they've had to go against. Obviously, for corners,
- 30:04Speaker 2: seeing the same receivers every day, there are some positives
- 30:08Speaker 2: to it, but I'm sure eventually you're looking forward to
- 30:11Speaker 2: seeing somebody new. I think everybody's ready, and this is
- 30:17Speaker 2: a Louisville team that is not to be taken lightly.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I know they're ranked number 24th, I know they've got
- 30:23Speaker 2: a new quarterback, and we'll see how that looks, but
- 30:25Speaker 2: they've got two really good running backs. I think Brown
- 30:28Speaker 2: is a baller. I think he averaged like eight-something yards
- 30:34Speaker 2: to carry last year and had almost 1,000 yards despite
- 30:36Speaker 2: missing like three games. So that is not a gimme game.
- 30:44Speaker 2: So I think it sounds like everybody's ready, and I
- 30:47Speaker 2: think they have a– a first game where you can
- 30:50Speaker 2: get hyped for it. You know, obviously every first game
- 30:52Speaker 2: teams are going to say that they're excited, regardless of it. Yes. Yes. Team.
- 30:56Speaker 2: If it's, you know, Georgia stays, you know, whoever it is. Uh,
- 31:00Speaker 2: but I think that when it's a quality opponent, everybody is, is,
- 31:05Speaker 2: is ready to go and locked in.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Hey, have you picked a, uh, sec, uh, you know,
- 31:09Speaker 1: championship matchup just for fun?
- 31:12Speaker 2: You know, I, yeah, I, It's really hard for me
- 31:16Speaker 2: to pick against Georgia just because I know they've got
- 31:19Speaker 2: a lot of new, but Kirby Smart always does this,
- 31:23Speaker 2: and it always ends up, for the most part, going
- 31:26Speaker 2: his way. I know Texas is a really popular pick,
- 31:30Speaker 2: and I think Texas is really, really talented, but I
- 31:34Speaker 2: think so much of it depends on is there another
- 31:38Speaker 2: year for Arch Manning. It's been a weird few weeks.
- 31:42Speaker 2: with like social media saying, Oh, he's looked terrible at practice.
- 31:44Speaker 2: And then some people being like, no, he's looked awesome.
- 31:48Speaker 2: You know, I think that the truth is usually somewhere
- 31:50Speaker 2: in the middle of what you hear. I think that
- 31:53Speaker 2: if he is as good as he's supposed to be,
- 31:55Speaker 2: I think Texas has a chance to be stellar. So
- 31:57Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if that is the matchup, but it's,
- 32:01Speaker 2: it's just so hard for me to pick against Kirby
- 32:02Speaker 2: smart in Georgia. And, you know, they've got a veteran quarterback.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Gunner Stockton is, is so underrated. He's really good. Ole
- 32:10Speaker 2: Miss fans know how good he is. It's hard for
- 32:13Speaker 2: me to go against Georgia.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Good stuff, as always, from Michael Katz. Get him on X.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Check him out, Northeast Mississippi Daily. Katz, try to get
- 32:19Speaker 1: a little rest. Enjoy your USC Trojans this weekend, and
- 32:22Speaker 1: we'll do it again next week. It'll be game week.
- 32:24Speaker 2: All right, sounds good, man.

- 34:31Speaker 1: have Rafael Esparza, mybookie.ag. Coming in around 4.30, 4.30. All right,
- 34:38Speaker 1: let me get to some other stuff here. And I
- 34:42Speaker 1: wanted to go back to the athletic, as you need
- 34:47Speaker 1: more rankings. They've ranked all 138 college football teams in
- 34:53Speaker 1: the country. And their number one team in the country
- 34:57Speaker 1: is Indiana. So, you know, when you look at what
- 35:02Speaker 1: they've done this year, They've done it a little differently.
- 35:05Speaker 1: This is the first poll that I've seen where Indiana
- 35:08Speaker 1: has been number one. And again, you know, pick the
- 35:12Speaker 1: poll you want. I mean, if you want to use
- 35:13Speaker 1: the Associated Press, if you want to use the coaches,
- 35:15Speaker 1: you've got the athletic, which I think is equally as
- 35:18Speaker 1: good as those two, probably better. I think the on
- 35:21Speaker 1: three polls, the CBS sports polls, I think those are better,
- 35:25Speaker 1: but they say the defending national champs are disrespected by
- 35:27Speaker 1: their number six ranking in the preseason coaches in a people, uh,
- 35:32Speaker 1: Would that have happened if a different logo were on
- 35:34Speaker 1: the helmet? Additions like running back Turbo Richard and receiver
- 35:38Speaker 1: Nick Marshall will help new quarterback Josh Hoover. The Hoosiers
- 35:42Speaker 1: remain the team to beat. I get it. I get
- 35:45Speaker 1: some of that. I mean, if you want to put
- 35:46Speaker 1: Indiana at number one, I get that thought process for sure.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I mean, especially with the pedigree of Kurt Cignetti and
- 35:54Speaker 1: you look at the staff and you look at the
- 35:55Speaker 1: guys coming back and you look at the guys they
- 35:58Speaker 1: brought in. Yes, Josh Hoover is new at quarterback. But
- 36:02Speaker 1: he is a quarterback that has, at this point in
- 36:04Speaker 1: his career, played more football than Fernando Mendoza. Ohio State,
- 36:07Speaker 1: number two, says the Buckeyes will be in the mix
- 36:09Speaker 1: as always, always with so much talent. But there are
- 36:13Speaker 1: some questions about a defense that lost so much and
- 36:15Speaker 1: an offense that struggled in the biggest games a year ago. Georgia,
- 36:19Speaker 1: number three, the defensive running game should return to form.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You have to wonder how explosive, though, offensively the Dogs
- 36:27Speaker 1: will be. They lacked some explosiveness defensively. Now, you're starting
- 36:31Speaker 1: to see a trend of a lot of people late,
- 36:33Speaker 1: kind of jump on the Georgia bandwagon as far as
- 36:36Speaker 1: winning the whole thing. So you've seen a lot of
- 36:40Speaker 1: flow and trend from Ohio State to Indiana to Georgia
- 36:43Speaker 1: to Texas to Miami to Notre Dame as far as
- 36:47Speaker 1: who the best team is. Number four on their list
- 36:49Speaker 1: is Oregon. This is another team that a lot of
- 36:50Speaker 1: people like. The Ducks may have, quote, the best quarterback
- 36:54Speaker 1: and defensive line in the country. Six of Dan Lanning's
- 36:57Speaker 1: eight losses as a head coach have come against teams
- 36:59Speaker 1: that played for the national title. The pieces are there
- 37:04Speaker 1: to get over the hump. So we'll see if they
- 37:05Speaker 1: do it. Notre Dame at number five. The Irish return
- 37:07Speaker 1: the most production in the FBS and may have the
- 37:10Speaker 1: best defense. But are there enough playmakers at running back
- 37:14Speaker 1: and receivers in that receiving room for the Irish? Another
- 37:18Speaker 1: week's schedule leaves little room for error because they really
- 37:21Speaker 1: don't play a challenging schedule. I mean, they do play
- 37:24Speaker 1: the University of Miami. but that's not until late, and
- 37:28Speaker 1: they do play SMU. Texas at number six. It says
- 37:30Speaker 1: probably the highest ceiling in the country of Arch Manning,
- 37:33Speaker 1: Cam Coleman, and the rest of the Longhorns can pull
- 37:36Speaker 1: it all together. We saw what the floor was last
- 37:39Speaker 1: year for Texas. The University of Miami, the Hurricanes at
- 37:43Speaker 1: number seven. The Canes may be better at quarterback and
- 37:46Speaker 1: the skill position set than last year's squad that was
- 37:49Speaker 1: a college football player runner-up. The Athletic has LSU at
- 37:53Speaker 1: number eight. It says Lane Kiffin has all the talent
- 37:56Speaker 1: he could ask for. Can he tie it all together
- 37:59Speaker 1: in his first season in charge down in Baton Rouge?
- 38:01Speaker 1: Texas Tech at number nine. It says if quarterback Will
- 38:04Speaker 1: Hammond is healthy, the defense and running game are more
- 38:09Speaker 1: than enough for the Red Raiders to run through the
- 38:10Speaker 1: Big 12. They have Oklahoma at number 10. It says
- 38:13Speaker 1: the defense should be strong again. Can the Sooners run
- 38:15Speaker 1: the ball to help quarterback John Mateer? At number 11,
- 38:19Speaker 1: BYU says second-year quarterback Bear Williams Bachmeier, which again is
- 38:25Speaker 1: one of the better names for quarterbacks this year, had
- 38:29Speaker 1: a full offseason in the system and the defense is reloaded.
- 38:33Speaker 1: The Cougars have finished just outside the college football playoff
- 38:36Speaker 1: the last two seasons. That might change this year. And
- 38:39Speaker 1: you've seen some projections where BYU has been in as
- 38:43Speaker 1: that second team out of the Big 12. Because if
- 38:46Speaker 1: you're looking at two, the SEC is going to get
- 38:49Speaker 1: multiple teams in the playoff. The Big 10 is definitely
- 38:51Speaker 1: going to get more than two teams in the playoff.
- 38:54Speaker 1: So the question is, can the ACC have more than one,
- 38:57Speaker 1: which is likely Miami, and the Big 12, will they
- 38:59Speaker 1: have more than one, which is likely Texas Tech? You
- 39:03Speaker 1: see a lot of people look at BYU and say
- 39:05Speaker 1: the Big 12. In some field, the Big 12 has
- 39:07Speaker 1: now surpassed the ACC. We're brought to you by Cowboy Maloney's.
