- 0:21It's five minutes after and we turn the page on the rundown. Thankfully we
- 0:26can push away from all of the noise and get to some stuff that really
- 0:29matters, and that's football. Time to talk football FSU football in particular,
- 0:36with the managing editor of war chant dot com. He is Iras Chaffel.
- 0:40Good morning, Ira, How are you. I'm great? Present, How
- 0:43are you? I'm good? Before we talk any specifics, can I just
- 0:47get you to step back for a second and just talk about what I think
- 0:51is one of the most amazing things I've seen in a very long time in
- 0:56sports, what Mike Norvel has done in just four years here at Florida State.
- 1:03Yeah. I mean when you do take you know, it's easy to
- 1:06kind of get caught up in the week to week and what you're doing good
- 1:08this week and what was better that this week than last week and all of
- 1:11that. But yeah, there's no question, especially when you think about it,
- 1:15it was wasn't that long ago. It was just over a year ago
- 1:18that they lost those three straight games in the middle of the season, and
- 1:19you started wondering, Okay, how's this thing going to work out with Mike
- 1:23Norvel? And now they've won like you know what, fourteen or fifteen straight
- 1:27and you know, right in the thick of the college football playoff races.
- 1:30It's very impressive. I just marvel at the culture shift. And you know,
- 1:36you hear that term a lot ira in sports, you know, changing
- 1:40the culture of the team. It's one thing in pros because those guys are
- 1:44paid to be professional. In college, he has somehow managed to get the
- 1:49guys that have stayed with the program, stayed through the changes, stayed through
- 1:53the turnover, and merged that with guys that have transferred in and and made
- 2:00them all sort of I mean, they're rowing in the same direction, and
- 2:05they care. They care a lot. Yeah, you could see it in
- 2:08a lot of different ways, and I think that is you know, one
- 2:12of the most impressive things he's done is that, you know, two years
- 2:15ago or three years ago, when he go three or four years ago,
- 2:16when he got here, obviously, when you had a player on the team
- 2:21that was kind of like had a great attitude and worked hard and was a
- 2:24professional and had that great approach, they stood out because there weren't a lot
- 2:30of them doing that. Now, the problem for a kid if a guy
- 2:34comes in and he's even thinking about being lazy or having a bad attitude or
- 2:38talking back that stands out. So those guys have to kind of get in
- 2:43line quickly. So you know, not every single guy he's brought in here
- 2:46came in with a perfect reputation, but they've all bought in is pretty soon
- 2:50after they've gotten here, and like you said, that, they all work
- 2:52together. Granted, I think that a lot of these guys have the right
- 2:58motivation in coming back for their senior year, to play one more year together
- 3:02and to pursue a shot at a national title. But I'm beginning to think
- 3:07that maybe I was a little wrong about this NIL deal, that it might
- 3:10actually be good for college football and keep guys in school longer. I mean,
- 3:17I think there's no question, and I was just like you, I
- 3:20mean I was. My big question was even going into the season for Florida
- 3:23State. It's no secret that a lot of these players have in IL deals,
- 3:28and a lot of them chose to come back because they could make money
- 3:30in college football. They didn't have to go pro and take their chances.
- 3:35And so what I wondered about was, you know, where they still have
- 3:38the same motivation, where they still care about each other. How would they
- 3:42get along? They all don't have similar INIL deals. Some guys have opportunities
- 3:46to make much more than other guys, and how would that work out and
- 3:49all that. But the reality is that hasn't come to fruition. And I
- 3:52think it speaks to again, this is a special group. I think that's
- 3:55one thing. It's fair to say, we don't know that this works everywhere.
- 4:00I do think this is a group of kids that came back for the
- 4:01right reasons. Also, you know, a lot of these guys do have
- 4:04ANIL deals, but a lot of them could have gotten bigger in IDL deals
- 4:08honestly if they've gone to other schools, because there was kind of a bidding
- 4:11war for you know, in the offseason. Jordan Travis, I think got
- 4:15offers from other schools. Jared Verse certainly got offers from other schools, and
- 4:18they chose to come to Fort State not because it was the highest bidder quote
- 4:21unquote, but because they really thought they had a chance to do something special
- 4:26and that and to put a bow on this part of the discussion today,
- 4:29Ira that to me goes right back to Mike Norvel and his assistant coaches,
- 4:33the staff. These players feel a connection. Yeah, they do. And
- 4:39I think they also feel like they're being put in positions to succeed, you
- 4:43know. I think that's also something that that's part of how you get to
- 4:46buy. And also, you know, players could love a coach as a
- 4:47person, but if he's not putting them in positions to succeed, well they're
- 4:51they're not gonna love him quite as much. And I think the fact that
- 4:55he does so many good things, they do so many good things as a
- 4:58staff to give guys that answer an opportunity to shine, I think that's another
- 5:01thing that gives you that buy. In the Morning Show with Preston Scott play
- 5:05a lot at the time at the time on news radio one hundred point seven
- 5:11w u FLA eleven minutes past the hour. Subscribe war chant dot com.
- 5:20You're gonna get great intel on FSU athletics all year round, but certainly during
- 5:25football season. Everything is there and that's at war chant dot com. Irisha
- 5:30Feld, the managing editor with me Ira. When you look at where Florida
- 5:34State is now, they are in the ACC title game, but that isn't
- 5:39really even what everybody's looking at. They're looking beyond that. What would you
- 5:44say to FSU fans that are all nervous and have their their you know,
- 5:48their their knickers in a bind over what the playoff ranking is going to be
- 5:53tomorrow, I would not worry about it because if Florida State stays on the
- 5:59feed and they'll be in the college football playoffs, I just don't have any
- 6:01doubt about that. You don't want to drop, you know, you don't
- 6:04want to play poorly so that you drop out of the top four, top
- 6:08five and give them even a thought of putting a one lost team ahead of
- 6:11you. But if florest State wins out and looks decenter, looks good,
- 6:15I think they're definitely in and they're gonna get some opportunities here. You know,
- 6:17Miami and Florida are still big name schools even though they haven't had great
- 6:20seasons. So I think Florestaate's fine. They just gotta keep winning. Would
- 6:24it be fair to say that both Miami and Florida have athletes that if Florida
- 6:28State does not play well and they do that, they can they can beat
- 6:31Florida State one hundred percent. I think your pitt to me was the last
- 6:36team on the schedule that Florist State wasn't going to lose unless they played poorly.
- 6:43You know, for State, even with all those receivers out last Saturday,
- 6:46they would have still would have to play poorly turn the ball over a
- 6:47lot to have a chance to lose that game. Florida Miami are different.
- 6:50I mean that. You know Miami's you know, they've lost three of the
- 6:54last five games. They're they're obviously going through some struggles. They've got some
- 6:58issues a quarterback, but overall, they have talent and they've got guys that
- 7:01can make plays on both sides of the ball. You have to play well
- 7:04in this game and against Florida, especially down in Gainesville to get those wins,
- 7:10all right, help me out Miami at three thirty in the afternoon,
- 7:15that just doesn't seem right. Yeah, I was really hoping it was gonna
- 7:20be prime time. And I know that TV people have the reasons for making
- 7:24these decisions based on what's on the other channels at certain times a day and
- 7:29all that, and I know there's a lot that goes into it, but
- 7:30it would have been great to be a night game. I still think it's
- 7:32going to be a great crowd. I think I still think Florida State fans
- 7:34are going to pack the stadium just because you know it's a chance to you
- 7:39know, I think people smell blood with this Miami team struggling the way they've
- 7:42been. If you look ahead now Florida State has three games left on the
- 7:47schedule, then likely Louisville. But Louisville's got some tough games going down the
- 7:53stretch. So if not Louisville in the ACC title game, who do you
- 7:57think is the odds on favorite. It's really completely wide open. I wish
- 8:01I could give you an answer, and I'm not convinced that Louisville is going
- 8:03to get there. Yeah, you know, they thought they thought have to
- 8:07play Miami, you know, they they're uh, I think they still played
- 8:11Virginia. I believe Virginia has been decent lately, So I'm not convinced it
- 8:15to me Louisville. And but after that, and you've got like, I
- 8:16don't know, six seventeens with two losses, So it could be it could
- 8:20end up be in a situation where you have, uh, one of those
- 8:24you know, second, third, or fourth tie breakers that comes into effect.
- 8:26I think it's really wide open, but Louisville controls their own destiny,
- 8:31you know, and if they get it done, it'll be for State and
- 8:33Louisville. All right, Now, let's get to what really matters. Ira.
- 8:37I thought that Jordan Travis stayed out one series too long. He was
- 8:41limping, favoring one leg or the other one series before he came off the
- 8:46field in his last series, really limping. What if anything do you know?
- 8:52Uh, you know, I don't know much. Well we should know
- 8:54more this week at practice. He did not come speak to the media after
- 8:58the game Saturday, which can you can make you pause a little bit,
- 9:01But that's not the first time that's happened. And you know a lot of
- 9:05times they're trying to get on the plane so quickly. If a player needs
- 9:09any kind of treatment or anything like that, it's hard to get them to
- 9:11come to interviews. Just from watching Mike or excuse me, after watching Jordan
- 9:16Travis for these last three or four years, I mean, there's no way
- 9:20he's not gonna play. I don't know if he's gonna be one hundred percent
- 9:22or not. He looked like he was running one hundred percent on Saturday.
- 9:26We'll see if you can get back to this this week, but judging on
- 9:28history, I would bet on Jordan being fine. Do you have any sense
- 9:31that they held out Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson as a just to be safe
- 9:37and give them one more week of rest. Do you think they'll be ready
- 9:39to go? That's my theory. Mike Norvell is never gonna say that,
- 9:43and he certainly would never fit that he set them out when they could have
- 9:46played, But that is my theory. I think they knew that they could
- 9:50not lose the Pit unless it was a complete disaster, because that Pit offense
- 9:54wasn't gonna score, and so I think that that's what they did. And
- 9:58I think that there's a good chance for those both feedback, along with maybe
- 10:01a couple one or two other players as well as Saturday. So I think
- 10:03four s eight. I'm not as worried about the health of receivers have looked
- 10:07on Saturday. I think they'll be okay on this Saturday, Ira, I
- 10:11can't wait for the weekend. It'll be a lot of fun and of course
- 10:13we'll talk about it on Monday next week. Thanks as always for your time,
- 10:16Thanks pressing you too, Take care all right, Irish chaffel with us
