2:26
Speaker 3: as well. Plus we get several items to get to
2:28
Speaker 3: in the news. Of course, yesterday the big news locally
2:30
Speaker 3: here in Charleston was the water main breakover on the
2:34
Speaker 3: intersection of Patrick Street and Fourth Avenue. That the water
2:37
Speaker 3: issue has been taken care of, however, the road situation
2:41
Speaker 3: not so much, so I'm gonna get into that a

2:55
Speaker 3: Starting us off this morning. Though the debt it's kind
2:58
Speaker 3: of like what they say about the webb. Everyone talks
3:00
Speaker 3: about it, but no one wants to do anything about it. Well,
3:03
Speaker 3: what organization definitely has it on their radar and they
3:06
Speaker 3: are called the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The
3:09
Speaker 3: president of the group is Maya McGinnis and she joins
3:12
Speaker 3: us now, Maya, good morning and welcome to the show.
3:15
Speaker 5: Good morning, it's so nice to be with you.
3:16
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. First of all, tell me
3:19
Speaker 3: about the group. How was it founded, who's in it
3:22
Speaker 3: and what is the mission statement of your organization?
3:25
Speaker 5: Great, So, it was founded decades ago. I'm only the
3:29
Speaker 5: second person who's run it. I've been for twenty years.
3:33
Speaker 5: But it came out of a number of members of
3:34
Speaker 5: Congress in the eighties early eighties who left frustrated that
3:37
Speaker 5: they and their colleagues couldn't really act responsibly on the budget.
3:41
Speaker 5: And I will tell you they were doing a lot
3:43
Speaker 5: better than in most ways than we are now. What's
3:47
Speaker 5: unique about it one critically important. We are so bipartisan.
3:51
Speaker 5: I am a political independent. This is not about politics.
3:54
Speaker 5: We have people of every stripe on our staff, on
3:57
Speaker 5: our board, and the board is people who've actually been
3:59
Speaker 5: in government running the treasury or the FED, or the
4:03
Speaker 5: budget Committees or OMB or CBO, or a Office of
4:07
Speaker 5: Management and Budget in the Congressional Budget Office. But they
4:09
Speaker 5: have been into trenches. They know how hard this work is.
4:12
Speaker 5: So we try to work with lawmakers in a realistic
4:15
Speaker 5: way to help them. This is a mission improve the
4:18
Speaker 5: fifth goal responsibility of this country and what that means.
4:21
Speaker 5: It's not that you have to balance the budget every year,
4:24
Speaker 5: but right now we are borrowing for almost everything. We
4:28
Speaker 5: do not for economic reasons, because sometimes it's okay to borrow,
4:32
Speaker 5: like during COVID or a recession. We are borring for
4:34
Speaker 5: political reasons because our politicians just aren't willing to do
4:37
Speaker 5: the hard work of budgeting, and that has huge dangerous
4:42
Speaker 5: ramifications for our country, our long term economic health, and frankly,
4:46
Speaker 5: our national security.
4:47
Speaker 3: We're talking to Miyam again. I said, the subject is
4:50
Speaker 3: the federal debt this morning, and I thought it was
4:52
Speaker 3: interesting for you to start off the segment. I was
4:54
Speaker 3: going to get into this a little bit later on.
4:55
Speaker 3: I appreciate you bringing it up about how this is
4:57
Speaker 3: a nonpartisan organization and and I would agree you're the expert,
5:01
Speaker 3: not me, but I would agree in theory with what
5:03
Speaker 3: you said that a part of the reason we're in
5:05
Speaker 3: the shape we're in now is because everybody wants to
5:08
Speaker 3: get a victory. You know, they all have, the Republicans
5:11
Speaker 3: and Democrats. I mean, they're all pointing fingers. It's his fault,
5:14
Speaker 3: it's her fault. Whatever. In the end, though, it comes
5:17
Speaker 3: out on the taxpayers. And explain to our listeners this morning,
5:20
Speaker 3: they hear all this talk about the debt, why should
5:23
Speaker 3: they care about this maya?
5:25
Speaker 5: And that is really the big challenge of this issue,
5:27
Speaker 5: because people are struggling with the fact that healthcare is
5:31
Speaker 5: not affordable, saving for retirement, putting their kids through college,
5:34
Speaker 5: job in security, so many things going on. And you
5:38
Speaker 5: don't see the direct effects of the national debt. But
5:41
Speaker 5: what it does is it flows our economic growth. So
5:45
Speaker 5: the point is today we are all making less than
5:49
Speaker 5: we would have if we hadn't borrowed for so many
5:52
Speaker 5: frankly dumb things in the past. It brings our standard
5:55
Speaker 5: of living down. It also means that our interest payments
5:58
Speaker 5: are the fastest growing part of the budget. It right now,
6:00
Speaker 5: we spend more on interest than we do on the
6:03
Speaker 5: national defense as of this year, and we spend more
6:06
Speaker 5: on interest than we do on all federal spending for children,
6:09
Speaker 5: so it crowds out other things we might do, whether
6:12
Speaker 5: those are tax cuts for conservatives or spending increases for
6:15
Speaker 5: progressives or both. The interest is squeezing out other things.
6:20
Speaker 5: But it also means we're unable to respond to future
6:22
Speaker 5: emergencies in a way we might be able to want
6:25
Speaker 5: to be able to. And we no longer have flexibility
6:27
Speaker 5: in our budgets. So if we needed to put in place,
6:30
Speaker 5: say worker retraining because things are changing, because technology is
6:34
Speaker 5: changing the economy, we don't have the resources available we
6:38
Speaker 5: would have if we hadn't been borrowing in the past,
6:41
Speaker 5: and that will only become a bigger squeeze if we
6:44
Speaker 5: stay on this unsustainable path while we're borrowing like two
6:47
Speaker 5: trillion dollars every year for the foreseeable future future, that
6:51
Speaker 5: will just make things even worse. But I know it's hard.
6:54
Speaker 5: You don't sit down at your kitchen table and worry
6:55
Speaker 5: about it. I do. But that's why my kids didn't
6:58
Speaker 5: like having sitting at the kitchen table with kit told.
7:00
Speaker 5: But it is a real issue that affects everything else
7:03
Speaker 5: that we care about.
7:05
Speaker 3: We're talking about him again, this again with the organization
7:07
Speaker 3: and Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. I do want
7:10
Speaker 3: to remind you the Dave v Allen Show on five
7:11
Speaker 3: to eighty Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants.
7:14
Speaker 3: There Lead pain Inspection and Risk Assessment services are designed
7:17
Speaker 3: to identify and to assess the presence of lead based
7:20
Speaker 3: paints and buildings and other structures using a three phase
7:23
Speaker 3: approach of inspection, sampling, the lab, analysis, and an assessment
7:26
Speaker 3: reports Apinnacle Court dot net. Because what you don't know
7:29
Speaker 3: can hurt you, you use the word sustainability or maybe
7:32
Speaker 3: a lack of sustainability moving forward, get into that a
7:35
Speaker 3: little bit more, and you talked about your kids, talk
7:38
Speaker 3: about what this is going to mean for future generations
7:40
Speaker 3: if we don't do something.
7:42
Speaker 5: Absolutely so, our fiscal situation is not sustainable because our
7:48
Speaker 5: debt is growing faster than our economy. If our economy
7:52
Speaker 5: were growing faster, we would be okay, we might have
7:56
Speaker 5: too much debt, but we would be on a trajectory
7:58
Speaker 5: where things were going to get better. We are on
8:00
Speaker 5: a trajectory where things are going to get worse. And frankly,
8:03
Speaker 5: our political environment is such that it's likely to be
8:06
Speaker 5: even worse than the numbers from the Congressional Budget Office
8:08
Speaker 5: show us this means for our kids, you know, a
8:12
Speaker 5: smaller economy than it would otherwise have been a lot
8:16
Speaker 5: of the more dramatic things I think, and this isn't
8:18
Speaker 5: as exaggerating, is we are gradually threatening our role in
8:22
Speaker 5: the world. We may not be the economic superpower, we
8:25
Speaker 5: may not have as much leverage as we have been
8:27
Speaker 5: used to, and the debt will be underlying that. But basically,
8:30
Speaker 5: we are handing our kids a budget where they have
8:33
Speaker 5: so much to pay an interest, and so many promises.
8:36
Speaker 5: They won't have the flexibility to deal with their own challenges.
8:40
Speaker 5: And it's quite clear that younger generations are inheriting a
8:44
Speaker 5: very complicated world. Whether it's natural disasters or terrorism, or
8:50
Speaker 5: hot spots around the world or changes from technology, there's
8:53
Speaker 5: going to be a lot to navigate and they need
8:55
Speaker 5: to have a budget that allows them to respond nimbly.
8:59
Speaker 5: But frankly, they will not have that. Sometimes I say,
9:02
Speaker 5: it's just the same as if we turned to our
9:04
Speaker 5: kids and said give me one hundred bucks. I want
9:06
Speaker 5: to spend money right now, but I don't want to
9:08
Speaker 5: pay for it, so you're going to have to it. Really, obviously,
9:11
Speaker 5: it's more complicated than that, but it is shifting who's
9:15
Speaker 5: going to pay for the things we are buying today
9:17
Speaker 5: onto our kids instead of ourselves. And that's kind of
9:20
Speaker 5: the opposite of what the American dream is supposed to be,
9:22
Speaker 5: or relieve a stronger world and country and economy to
9:26
Speaker 5: the next generation than the one we inherit it currently.
9:29
Speaker 3: If we keep on this based on what you said
9:31
Speaker 3: and then some of the reading I've done, if we
9:33
Speaker 3: keep on this path that we're on now, we're certainly
9:35
Speaker 3: not going to be doing what we're supposed to do
9:37
Speaker 3: for future generations. So here's the multimillion dollar maybe i'll
9:40
Speaker 3: say trillion dollar question for you, miya. How do we
9:44
Speaker 3: fix this?
9:45
Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, we only deal with trillions here. I remember
9:48
Speaker 5: when it went from billions to trillions, and that was
9:51
Speaker 5: a bit of a shocker. Listen, these are the things
9:54
Speaker 5: politicians promise they won't do, but they're the things we
9:57
Speaker 5: have to do if we're going to get this under control.
10:00
Speaker 5: We are going to have to raise taxes. Obviously no
10:03
Speaker 5: one wants that, but we're going to have to, and
10:05
Speaker 5: not just millionaires and billionaires, We're going to have to
10:08
Speaker 5: raise real revenue. And we are going to have to
10:11
Speaker 5: reduce spending. We are spending is at a very high
10:15
Speaker 5: level right now, much higher than it's been historically. It
10:18
Speaker 5: is going to continue to grow, and Congress is routinely
10:22
Speaker 5: appropriating high increases in our spending, and it has automatic
10:27
Speaker 5: programs that it's not checking and they are growing faster
10:30
Speaker 5: than the economy. Finally, we have to make changes to
10:33
Speaker 5: soci security and medicare. I know these are the opposite
10:36
Speaker 5: of the things that our political candidates are promising us,
10:39
Speaker 5: but they're pandering. They're telling us what they think they
10:43
Speaker 5: need to say to win an election, not to guide
10:45
Speaker 5: the country. But if we don't fix social security, where
10:49
Speaker 5: the trust funds will run out of resources in less
10:51
Speaker 5: than a decade, there will be automatic benefit cuts for
10:55
Speaker 5: every single current retiree. That's unconscionable. There are many things
11:00
Speaker 5: we can do today to make these changes gradually and
11:03
Speaker 5: in a shared way where people who depend on the
11:05
Speaker 5: program aren't affected at all. But by doing nothing, we
11:08
Speaker 5: are harming the people who depend on the program to
11:10
Speaker 5: the most. So honestly, it's the opposite of a political slogan.
11:14
Speaker 5: We need more revenues, we need slower spending so that
11:17
Speaker 5: we're not borrowing two trillion dollars a year, and we
11:20
Speaker 5: need to fix social Security and Medicare so we can
11:22
Speaker 5: honor the promises that we've made instead of hitting a
11:25
Speaker 5: wall where there are large, abrupt across the board benefit
11:29
Speaker 5: cuts for everybody which will do real harm.
11:32
Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate you being here. It's fascinating stuff. Mia
11:34
Speaker 3: McGinnis is the president of the organization Committee for a
11:38
Speaker 3: Responsible Federal Budget. Where can people learn more about your organization?
11:41
Speaker 3: Where can they do some more reading? Give us sand
11:43
Speaker 3: the info you got there.
11:45
Speaker 5: Even beyond reading, you can play some games. We have
11:48
Speaker 5: a lot of interactive tools also, which I think are
11:51
Speaker 5: fund greatly to have a Friday night party with our
11:54
Speaker 5: debt fixer or our Social Security fixer. The point being
11:56
Speaker 5: there's no one way to fix any of these things,
11:59
Speaker 5: so you can look at them and learn more through
12:01
Speaker 5: kind of interactive tools. But see r FB dot org
12:07
Speaker 5: or just Google. Committee for Responsible Federal Budget. I know
12:09
Speaker 5: it's a mouthful, but again, I think the nonpartisanship of
12:13
Speaker 5: what we do is really important. We're not coming at
12:16
Speaker 5: it from a political agenda. We encourage people to have
12:19
Speaker 5: their own choices and preferences, but we can't borrow our
12:22
Speaker 5: way to prosperity or security. We're going to have to
12:25
Speaker 5: ask our political leaders to make the tough choices that
12:28
Speaker 5: are necessary in actually creating a budget. That's the only
12:32
Speaker 5: way we're going to get the situation under control and
12:34
Speaker 5: help our economy and our security and our role in
12:37
Speaker 5: the world stay as strong as they possibly can, because
12:40
Speaker 5: this will undermine everything if we don't make those changes.
12:43
Speaker 3: Maya, I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule
12:45
Speaker 3: to be here. I know you're very busy. Great stuff
12:47
Speaker 3: and have a great day and we will talk you hope.
12:50
Speaker 3: Maybe we'll talk again soon. I appreciate you being here.
12:52
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, it'd be great.
12:53
Speaker 5: Thanks so much. Bye.
12:54
Speaker 3: Maya McGinnis is the president of the group entitled the Committee,
12:57
Speaker 3: the Committee for a Responsible that Are Budget and Look.
13:00
Speaker 3: She said at the outset that this is a nonpartisan group.
13:04
Speaker 3: She herself. I didn't ask her what her political party was,
13:06
Speaker 3: but she's a registered independent. And you know, again, I
13:10
Speaker 3: am not an economist by any stretch of the imagination.
13:13
Speaker 3: People that know me know that numbers ain't my thing.
13:17
Speaker 3: But when we've got people that both sides are just
13:20
Speaker 3: looking at each other, and nobody wants to be the
13:22
Speaker 3: one to back down a little bit. That's how we
13:25
Speaker 3: get where we are now. And some serious changes are
13:27
Speaker 3: going to have to happen. No matter who is in
13:28
Speaker 3: the White House, no matter who controls Congress, Senate, whatever,
13:31
Speaker 3: some serious changes are going to have to happen at
13:33
Speaker 3: some point. The Dave Allen Show in five eighty Live

13:50
Speaker 3: you know, as I said, that was a reference to
13:52
Speaker 3: my guests, Maya. She her organization is nonpartisan. She herself
13:55
Speaker 3: is a registered independent. But that is uh that that's
14:00
Speaker 3: kind of why we are where we are now. And
14:03
Speaker 3: to the textas point is, Republicans point to democrats, Democrats
14:06
Speaker 3: point to Republicans. We got to start electing people that

18:23
Speaker 3: We are awaiting Brian Dayton from the Chamber of Commerce,
18:26
Speaker 3: but Rusty Webb is always on deck and he's always
18:28
Speaker 3: on time. Rusty we may switch and put Rusty on
18:30
Speaker 3: before Brian because we're still trying to locate where Brian
18:33
Speaker 3: Dayton is right now. I had a text at the
18:36
Speaker 3: top of the show. This said, Dave. A news article
18:38
Speaker 3: that I read this morning says that vehicle taxes paid
18:41
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty four can be refunded on your twenty
18:44
Speaker 3: twenty five return. The twenty twenty five return is filed
18:48
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty six. Is this correct a correct or
18:51
Speaker 3: do they mean twenty twenty four return. So I sent
18:55
Speaker 3: a text out to Larry Pack, the State Revenue Secretary,
18:59
Speaker 3: and he may have heard him on Happy yesterday. He's
19:00
Speaker 3: been kind of making the rounds and I sent a
19:02
Speaker 3: text out to Larry Pack, and Larry Pack responded by
19:08
Speaker 3: saying twenty twenty four return, which is filed early twenty
19:11
Speaker 3: twenty five. So there is your answer. Rusty Webb is here, Rusty,
19:17
Speaker 3: good morning, Welcome to the show.
19:18
Speaker 10: Well, I'm trying to put on social media that I'm
19:21
Speaker 10: going to be on at nine twenty six instead of
19:23
Speaker 10: thirty three.
19:24
Speaker 9: Well, you know, it takes a second.
19:26
Speaker 3: It's you know, it's it's a flexible thing. Sometimes things happen,
19:29
Speaker 3: you know. Well, I don't know what. I don't know
19:31
Speaker 3: where Brian Daton is. It's not like Brian. He listens
19:33
Speaker 3: to the show every day. And I will say that
19:36
Speaker 3: today is his wedding anniversary. Oh and so he texted
19:39
Speaker 3: me when we were texting back and forth yesterday, he said,
19:42
Speaker 3: well that count is a gift for my wife. If
19:43
Speaker 3: I'm on the radio. I said, no, it will not.
19:46
Speaker 3: So maybe he stopped, you know, at a dollar tree
19:48
Speaker 3: or something to pick up his his wife an anniversary gift.
19:51
Speaker 3: We'll try to get Brian on a little bit later
19:53
Speaker 3: if he comes in, but I appreciate you being here
19:55
Speaker 3: early because it's time for thunder in the mountains.
19:58
Speaker 10: In the mountains, and speaking of flexibility, we just made
20:00
Speaker 10: this decision thirty minutes ago, and that is we're playing
20:06
Speaker 10: the entire tournament at the y m c A. Because
20:09
Speaker 10: of the rain we were gonna we've already we've already
20:12
Speaker 10: decided to move Friday's matches because of the rain, but
20:16
Speaker 10: we're gonna move the entire tournament up there. So uh.
20:21
Speaker 10: Announcement number one. Announcement number two. We changed the format
20:25
Speaker 10: this year.
20:28
Speaker 9: The mayor.
20:31
Speaker 10: Was really interested in having local people play and so
20:34
Speaker 10: we're w and Marshall coaches like, let's have a singles
20:38
Speaker 10: tournament flat out, just play, just play. So we changed
20:42
Speaker 10: it so it's a Women's Open Singles. UTR is the
20:48
Speaker 10: kind of like the organization that's putting it together, and
20:51
Speaker 10: it has cash prizes. We have a cash purse, so
20:55
Speaker 10: of course the high school kids can't they can't get
20:59
Speaker 10: They can they can play, but they can't get money.
21:02
Speaker 10: So so we have as a result, we're kind of
21:08
Speaker 10: starting small because it kind of got a late start,
21:12
Speaker 10: and we have some of the best high school players
21:15
Speaker 10: in New Jersey, Maryland, in West Virginia playing in this
21:21
Speaker 10: tournament along with Marshall players and WVU player.
21:25
Speaker 3: I was going to say when you talked about the changes,
21:27
Speaker 3: I was afraid you were going to say that there
21:28
Speaker 3: wouldn't be Marshall and WVU. But they are taking part.
21:31
Speaker 10: They are taking part, but they're taking part not as
21:33
Speaker 10: a team but as individuals. As a matter of fact,
21:36
Speaker 10: if you want to see WVU practice, they'll be at
21:41
Speaker 10: the why tonight I think this afternoon, late this afternoon,
21:44
Speaker 10: so anyway, so that's exciting. And then we also have
21:52
Speaker 10: a lady from Morgantown who won the Triple A Girls
21:56
Speaker 10: tennis tournament just what six May, just a few months ago.
22:01
Speaker 10: And we have Naughty a or cut who if you
22:05
Speaker 10: know anything about tennis and West Virginia and particularly Charleston,
22:11
Speaker 10: Naughty and Julie orcutt are are are really really cream
22:14
Speaker 10: of the crop. They are. They're great players. So Naughty
22:17
Speaker 10: is playing and We're going to have a back draw,
22:20
Speaker 10: so if if you know, if a player loses, we're
22:22
Speaker 10: going to give them a guarantee two matches. So say
22:27
Speaker 10: you know, somebody loses, we're gonna let them play a
22:29
Speaker 10: backdraw so they can get at least two matches. In
22:36
Speaker 10: first prizes one thousand dollars, second prize is five hundred,
22:40
Speaker 10: and the two semi finalists will each receive two hundred
22:43
Speaker 10: and fifty dollars.
22:45
Speaker 3: Talk about the involvement of getting some of the tennis
22:47
Speaker 3: teams involved. I mean, like as far as the different
22:49
Speaker 3: height schools and whatever, and even the maybe middle school
22:52
Speaker 3: and I'm down to the elementary school age. I mean,
22:54
Speaker 3: talk about the involvement because this is, you know, obviously
22:57
Speaker 3: a showcase of fine tennis, but I know you're looking
22:59
Speaker 3: for the future. You'd like to try to get these
23:01
Speaker 3: young kids to.
23:03
Speaker 10: Beg beg tennis coaches, bring, bring your players and watch this.
23:09
Speaker 10: Here's what we're gonna do. If you know, if you
23:10
Speaker 10: know the y MC a court, you look across the
23:14
Speaker 10: courts and you can't see five, you can't see four,
23:17
Speaker 10: you're up in this crow's nest. What we're going to
23:20
Speaker 10: do is we're gonna play the matches on courts two, three,
23:23
Speaker 10: and four, so you can set chairs on court five
23:26
Speaker 10: and court one and watch between you know, between those two.
23:31
Speaker 10: So what I'm saying is I'm begging middle school, high school,
23:35
Speaker 10: grade school, anybody who plays tennis to come and watch
23:38
Speaker 10: this outstanding tennis inside, you know, out the weather. And
23:46
Speaker 10: like last year, Chapmanville rolled in, which was really cool.
23:50
Speaker 3: I was really Chris Kid's still the coach Chapmanville, do
23:52
Speaker 3: you know, I don't know. It's a good friend of
23:54
Speaker 3: mine from the radio. He actually is a teacher, but
23:56
Speaker 3: he also does some radio down there, and I knew
23:57
Speaker 3: he was the coach for years the chapmanvilleage.
24:00
Speaker 10: Well I'm just was really proud of chapman Field, you know.
24:02
Speaker 10: But we have so much Look, look, we have what
24:05
Speaker 10: twenty high schools and middle schools within a twenty minute
24:08
Speaker 10: drive of the of this city. So I'm perplexed as
24:12
Speaker 10: why why they don't come. It's great tennis, and it's
24:17
Speaker 10: not like you're going to watch so much college. You're
24:20
Speaker 10: going to see some really good high school Some of
24:22
Speaker 10: these high school girls have ratings that are higher than
24:25
Speaker 10: some of the college students. So you know there may
24:28
Speaker 10: be an upset or two out there, but I just
24:31
Speaker 10: I was not supposed to be here. I was supposed
24:33
Speaker 10: to go to Florida and everything got canceled because of
24:36
Speaker 10: the rain. And I'm tickled to death that I get
24:39
Speaker 10: to stay and watch it. I'm not the director anymore,
24:42
Speaker 10: Shane Saunders is okay, but I'm a assistant director for
24:46
Speaker 10: public relations. I just made that up.
24:48
Speaker 3: I like it. I mean, I make up my I
24:50
Speaker 3: make up my own titles all the time. Why not?
24:52
Speaker 3: Why not? But Dave Island showing five eighty lie present
24:55
Speaker 3: about General Hardware of Windfield and Milton General number of
24:57
Speaker 3: Windfield for all projects picking small shop locally. This is
25:00
Speaker 3: General Hardware WV dot com. All right, So what I've
25:03
Speaker 3: got you here?
25:04
Speaker 10: I want to do before I leave? I want to
25:07
Speaker 10: I want to I want to acknowledge my sponsors.
25:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, oh absolutely, okay, go ahead.
25:11
Speaker 10: Thank you. So Chick fil A has been been there
25:13
Speaker 10: with us from day one, going to provide sandwiches, Tammy
25:18
Speaker 10: down Jimmy John's down on Capitol Street. She's going to
25:20
Speaker 10: provide sandwiches on Saturday. The y m c A is
25:24
Speaker 10: always great in a pinch integrity insurance. Chris Chris Walters underwrites, ore,
25:32
Speaker 10: you know everything has to have insurance. Of course, Charleston
25:36
Speaker 10: CVB Web Law Center. I'm a sponsor. And last and
25:42
Speaker 10: not least is Mary Amy Goodwin in the city of Charleston.
25:45
Speaker 10: She has been a stalwart supporter of this tournament from
25:48
Speaker 10: the beginning and she's looking forward to expanding it where
25:51
Speaker 10: you're hoping to go thirty two sixty four next year.
25:55
Speaker 10: We got a late start, that's what I can say.
25:59
Speaker 10: We got a late starts, so that's why we didn't
26:01
Speaker 10: get a lot more colleges involved.
26:02
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well all right, now why you got
26:04
Speaker 3: me here? Well, we're going to get back to the tournament.
26:06
Speaker 3: I'll give all give an opportunity to give all of
26:08
Speaker 3: the facts, details, time, so on and so forth. But
26:10
Speaker 3: I always like to pick your brain about things when
26:12
Speaker 3: it comes to political stuff.
26:14
Speaker 10: I want to Dallas Cowboys.
26:17
Speaker 3: The Cowboys playing to night Man. It's a tradition in
26:20
Speaker 3: anytime the Cowboys, anytime the Cowboys and Marshall play their
26:24
Speaker 3: respect always wear the gear. And yeah, the Cowboys play
26:27
Speaker 3: the Thursday night game against the Giants. Rusty I have
26:30
Speaker 3: been a Dallas Cowboy fan since Super Bowl twelve when
26:34
Speaker 3: they beat the Broncos. I became a fan. They beat
26:36
Speaker 3: the Broncos twenty seven to ten. Landry was the coach,
26:40
Speaker 3: and I have been with this team ever since then.
26:43
Speaker 3: I was seven years old and I have been with
26:45
Speaker 3: this team ever since. And this is the year. This
26:51
Speaker 3: is the year we're going to turn it around.
26:53
Speaker 5: Here.
26:54
Speaker 3: All we need is a running game and a defense,
26:56
Speaker 3: and we've got it. We've got the highest paid quarterback
26:59
Speaker 3: in the league, the highest paid wide receiver. If we
27:02
Speaker 3: just had a running game, and just as they say,
27:05
Speaker 3: other than that, missus Lincoln, how was to play? All right?
27:08
Speaker 3: So let's talk about let's talk about some political stuff.
27:10
Speaker 3: I want to get your opinion. I don't care, just
27:12
Speaker 3: what's on your mind politically? What are you looking at
27:13
Speaker 3: right now? Got the my.
27:17
Speaker 10: Big concern, of course, if you follow me on social media,
27:19
Speaker 10: you know exactly how I feel about the Democrat nominee.
27:23
Speaker 10: But my biggest fear is for president.
27:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, you're not You're not on the hairs train.
27:30
Speaker 10: No, not at all. My biggest fear is that she's
27:35
Speaker 10: going to win those swing states. And so to the
27:38
Speaker 10: extent I have any friends in other states showing whatever
27:44
Speaker 10: I can for president.
27:46
Speaker 3: Okay, what is it about? Did you feel the same
27:49
Speaker 3: way about Biden or is it just Harris that you
27:50
Speaker 3: had an issue with.
27:53
Speaker 10: You know, Biden was actually a good moderate back in
27:55
Speaker 10: the day. He was back in the day before they
27:58
Speaker 10: got their hands on him. He was a decent moderate. Uh.
28:03
Speaker 10: He was a lot like Joe Manchin in that sense.
28:06
Speaker 10: As far as his politics, he was middle of the road.
28:10
Speaker 10: Then they got their hands on him, and now he
28:12
Speaker 10: went you know, well went liberal. But anyway, that's my
28:18
Speaker 10: big concern. I'm these state races, in my opinion, are over.
28:25
Speaker 10: I mean they're just over. I mean I don't and
28:27
Speaker 10: I love everybody running. By the way, two of my
28:31
Speaker 10: best friends are running against each other for governor, and
28:36
Speaker 10: I I love love Steve, love him.
28:39
Speaker 3: What about a debate though, you know, Jim Justice does
28:42
Speaker 3: not want to debate Glenn Elliott, and he shouldn't.
28:44
Speaker 10: He shouldn't. I mean, when you're up by thirty points,
28:46
Speaker 10: why why why why why why do it just giving
28:49
Speaker 10: the other part?
28:50
Speaker 3: From a from a strategical standpoint, I would agree with you,
28:54
Speaker 3: but I still don't think it's good for the people
28:57
Speaker 3: in my opinion.
28:58
Speaker 10: Uh, pass.
29:01
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, pass, fair enough pass. Do you think
29:04
Speaker 3: that to morrisse CV Williams is a slam dunk for Morrisey?
29:09
Speaker 10: I do.
29:10
Speaker 3: I think it's just the nature of the state. I
29:12
Speaker 3: don't think it has anything necessarily to do with Steve Williams.
29:15
Speaker 3: I don't. I don't care who's got the d after
29:16
Speaker 3: the name.
29:17
Speaker 10: If this was thirty years ago, it would be just
29:18
Speaker 10: the opposite.
29:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, thirty years in the future. It may be that.
29:22
Speaker 10: I mean, you talk about being a cowboy fan since
29:25
Speaker 10: age seven. I've been involved in politics since nineteen seventy two,
29:30
Speaker 10: when I was eleven. Okay, I put an arch more
29:34
Speaker 10: sign in the Boone County Courthouse lawn one time, not
29:38
Speaker 10: knowing of course that you can't do well. A, it's
29:41
Speaker 10: it's illegal, but B it was the most Democrat county.
29:46
Speaker 10: You know, you were just down the road. Yeah, oh yeah, well,
29:50
Speaker 10: I mean Logan. It was hard to compete with Logan
29:52
Speaker 10: and Mingo back then, with you know, corrupt politics.
29:56
Speaker 3: We kind of cornered the market out of that.
29:58
Speaker 10: Yeah we did too. Yeah, we had our too, But
30:01
Speaker 10: I remember, and I even it was raining, I put
30:03
Speaker 10: cell aphane around it, so wouldn't get wet. That's how.
30:07
Speaker 10: That's how. Now, that's that's a long time. I've been
30:10
Speaker 10: around around it. So I know a law of the
30:11
Speaker 10: history of the state. I know a law of that,
30:13
Speaker 10: and I know both sides of the isle. I know
30:15
Speaker 10: everybody on both sides of the isl.
30:16
Speaker 3: But going back national before I let you go, yeah, yeah,
30:19
Speaker 3: somebody you know here, And I've said this on the
30:21
Speaker 3: show Restie. People have said on both sides. They said,
30:23
Speaker 3: if Kamala Harris is elected president, that's the end of
30:26
Speaker 3: democracy as we know it. I've heard people say if
30:28
Speaker 3: Donald Trump is elected again, that's the end of democracy
30:32
Speaker 3: as we know it. Is this grand old experiment that
30:34
Speaker 3: we have of the United States of America not strong
30:38
Speaker 3: enough to withstand either one of them being president. I'd
30:41
Speaker 3: like to think.
30:42
Speaker 10: So it's funny because I just I think about these
30:45
Speaker 10: things like you do, and I had this, If I
30:48
Speaker 10: had the technology, I'd have two people sitting, one in
30:50
Speaker 10: blue and one in red, saying if she he, at
30:55
Speaker 10: the same time is elected, our government will be destroyed
30:59
Speaker 10: because both sides believe that. I've never seen a country
31:02
Speaker 10: so polarized in my life. Yeah, we'll sustain it. One
31:07
Speaker 10: of the you know as a conservative Republican we will
31:12
Speaker 10: still have the Senate hopefully and gain the Senate and
31:16
Speaker 10: have the House. So there's only so much a president
31:19
Speaker 10: can do to destroy America. So we have the we
31:25
Speaker 10: have the legislature to block stupid stuff.
31:28
Speaker 3: Well we have. That's why we have safeguards. All right,
31:30
Speaker 3: get back to thunderd the mountains, give us the time,
31:32
Speaker 3: the location, so on and so on.
31:33
Speaker 10: So Round one will be ten thirty, three matches at
31:37
Speaker 10: ten thirty at the Why tomorrow today, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Friday. Yeah, Friday,
31:41
Speaker 10: three matches at eleven thirty and three matches at three o'clock.
31:47
Speaker 10: That's it for Tomorrowkay. Then Saturday there'll be two matches
31:52
Speaker 10: just too. We only have we have sixteen sixteen player
31:55
Speaker 10: bracket except for the back draws will be eleven o'clock
32:01
Speaker 10: semi finals at the Y and Sunday ten o'clock final
32:07
Speaker 10: at the Y. All at the Y, and we'll go

37:07
Speaker 3: this campaign for jobs, digest and for those that may
37:09
Speaker 3: have missed or do you want to put a little
37:10
Speaker 3: bit more of a local Canal Valley spin on it?
37:12
Speaker 3: What exactly is this?
37:14
Speaker 9: So this is a publication we've been doing for a
37:16
Speaker 9: number of years now, but it tracks West Virginia with
37:20
Speaker 9: other states on fifty seven metrics of basically economic health
37:24
Speaker 9: we believe that we are in a constant competition with
37:27
Speaker 9: other states, and we want to know how are we doing,
37:31
Speaker 9: How are we doing when it comes to tax rates,
37:33
Speaker 9: how are we doing when it comes to workforce participation,
37:35
Speaker 9: How are we doing when it comes to bringing people
37:38
Speaker 9: into West Virginia versus having the brain drain leaving West Virginia.
37:43
Speaker 9: So it's called the Campaign for Jobs Digest. It's a
37:46
Speaker 9: red book. It is available on our website, so if
37:49
Speaker 9: you want to get on, you can go on see
37:50
Speaker 9: an electronic copy and read through these statistics. But it's
37:54
Speaker 9: something we put a lot of time into this to
37:57
Speaker 9: compile this and make this understandable for people to read
38:00
Speaker 9: and say, Okay, what are we doing and help keep
38:03
Speaker 9: the focus on what do we need to be doing
38:04
Speaker 9: heading into the future.
38:05
Speaker 3: Give us a summary right now for people that are working,
38:07
Speaker 3: driving and can't go look at it right now.
38:09
Speaker 9: Yes, if you are driving, don't pull up your phone
38:12
Speaker 9: and please don't, please don't. So there's been some good
38:15
Speaker 9: news in West Virginia, and there's been some unfortunate news
38:19
Speaker 9: where we still have a lot of work to do,
38:20
Speaker 9: but there are some things that we're really seeing that
38:23
Speaker 9: I think are positive First of all, we've seen some
38:26
Speaker 9: absolutely fantastic economic development announcements come into West Virginia. New
38:31
Speaker 9: Core Steel, Procter and Gamble, owens of minor Mountain State
38:34
Speaker 9: beverage Form Energy. Those are just some right off the
38:37
Speaker 9: top of my head. Berkshire Hathway up in Jackson County,
38:40
Speaker 9: that is really those were things we weren't hearing about
38:43
Speaker 9: ten years ago. We didn't have that coming in. And
38:46
Speaker 9: we have successfully changed I think our state's image on
38:49
Speaker 9: the business climate to where these companies are now looking
38:52
Speaker 9: and saying, hey, our next expansion or our next investment,
38:55
Speaker 9: why not look at the Mountain state. That's been a positive.
38:58
Speaker 9: Here's another one. When I graduated high school, I can
39:02
Speaker 9: basically go down through the top of the roster of
39:05
Speaker 9: my high school class. They ended up in Pittsburgh, they
39:08
Speaker 9: ended up in Washington, d c. And Charlotte, North Carolina, Columbus, Ohio.
39:13
Speaker 9: We had a brain drain in West Virginia and we
39:15
Speaker 9: would see year after year people leaving West Virginia as
39:18
Speaker 9: compared to coming in. We fix that for the past,
39:21
Speaker 9: not by much, but for the past few years now
39:24
Speaker 9: we have had more net domestic migration coming into West Virginia.
39:28
Speaker 9: We ranked twenty third in the country for in terms
39:30
Speaker 9: of domestic migration. We're still forty seventh on international migration.
39:34
Speaker 9: But that's been a very positive break down. Domestic domestic
39:38
Speaker 9: would be moving state to state, in international would be
39:41
Speaker 9: moving from another country coming in, so state to state,
39:44
Speaker 9: we're having more people move into West Virginia to move out.
39:46
Speaker 9: That's positive. The problem is we have had more death
39:51
Speaker 9: than births since two thousand and seven.
39:54
Speaker 3: Since I'm glad that you are presenting both sides because
39:56
Speaker 3: I get this all the time. But anytime I talk
39:58
Speaker 3: about people coming into West Virginia, I live and you
40:00
Speaker 3: and I both live in the Dayes Valley area. We
40:02
Speaker 3: know what we see on a daily basis. It's not
40:05
Speaker 3: true of everywhere in the state, you know, and but
40:07
Speaker 3: hopefully it will be. But I always get somebody that
40:09
Speaker 3: says people are not leaving. And the thing about it
40:11
Speaker 3: is two things can be right at the same time.
40:14
Speaker 3: So we were leaving, we're tops of the nation, or
40:17
Speaker 3: were you know, among the top or whatever in people
40:19
Speaker 3: moving here. Unfortunately, though, we have more people dying that
40:23
Speaker 3: are being born because we're the oldest state in the nation.
40:27
Speaker 3: So on both sides of the argument that I get
40:29
Speaker 3: on the show via textra calls both sides are technically right,
40:33
Speaker 3: I guess.
40:33
Speaker 9: Yes, yes, And so we've got to figure out ways
40:37
Speaker 9: to get our birth rip. That's going to be a
40:38
Speaker 9: challenge because we do have a more elderly population in
40:41
Speaker 9: West Virginia compared to other states. That's just a fact.
40:45
Speaker 9: But one of the big issues we're hearing a lot
40:48
Speaker 9: of talk about right now is it pertains the special
40:50
Speaker 9: session heading into the regular session, for example, is childcare
40:53
Speaker 9: and some people who are making plans on the size
40:55
Speaker 9: of family they're going to have. That is a major
40:57
Speaker 9: factor and can be the difference between do you have
41:00
Speaker 9: one children or two, or have two versus three? You know,
41:03
Speaker 9: So we're looking at things like that too. What do
41:05
Speaker 9: you do to make it easier for people who may
41:07
Speaker 9: want to have more children but are looking at the
41:09
Speaker 9: finance and going, I don't know that I can, but yeah,
41:13
Speaker 9: the good news is we are having more people move
41:15
Speaker 9: here than we've had moved out. We got to fix
41:17
Speaker 9: the birth rate.
41:19
Speaker 3: Well, I mean just look at people and say go
41:21
Speaker 3: have babies.
41:22
Speaker 9: That I mean, you can say that I have two
41:26
Speaker 9: and I'm looking at my wife and tell you that
41:27
Speaker 9: that's great too.
41:29
Speaker 3: Good. I'm good, I'm good, I'm good to you mentioned
41:33
Speaker 3: the special session. Well, now we'll close with this, and
41:35
Speaker 3: the special session is next week. We still, as of
41:38
Speaker 3: right now, I know you followed it, you know a
41:40
Speaker 3: lot more closely than I have. As of right now,
41:41
Speaker 3: we still don't know what's going to be on the call.
41:43
Speaker 3: Some of the legislators are kind of wringing their hands, saying, well,
41:46
Speaker 3: what are we even talking about? Because he has to
41:48
Speaker 3: put it on there. Are you hopeful that that meaningful
41:53
Speaker 3: change or meaningful legislation or meaningful discussions or whatever you
41:56
Speaker 3: want to call it will come out in that special
41:58
Speaker 3: session as it pertains to childcare.
42:01
Speaker 9: Yes, yes, I am, And there have been a lot
42:03
Speaker 9: of very good conversations. Five years ago, Dave, this really
42:07
Speaker 9: wasn't an issue that people talked about. It was an issue,
42:10
Speaker 9: but it wasn't receiving intention. Now it's becoming, i think
42:13
Speaker 9: more evident to lawmakers, to policymakers, to the business community,
42:17
Speaker 9: the general public, we really have to address this. So
42:20
Speaker 9: we've heard had some very productive conversations on that topic
42:24
Speaker 9: that where we may be able to get some serious
42:26
Speaker 9: things done during this special session. It's all going to
42:30
Speaker 9: be combined with the governor wants an income tax cut.
42:33
Speaker 9: You know, there are some other desires out there that
42:35
Speaker 9: are being brought in. So what I would remind your
42:38
Speaker 9: listeners is when it comes to a special session, the
42:42
Speaker 9: legislature by two thirds can call themselves in. Otherwise, the
42:45
Speaker 9: governor calls them in, and what he puts on the
42:48
Speaker 9: call is what they can't address. It's not like a
42:51
Speaker 9: regular session where you can introduce what else.
42:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, it can only be what's on the agenda pretty much.
42:55
Speaker 9: Yes, So what is on the call can dictate of
42:58
Speaker 9: what they can consider.
43:00
Speaker 3: All right. I appreciate you being here and for not
43:03
Speaker 3: giving me crap like a rusty webdit about my Cowboys apparel.
43:06
Speaker 9: I mean, hey, buddy, I'm a Steelers fan. I'm just
43:09
Speaker 9: being nice today.
43:11
Speaker 3: Real quick. I did have a text somebody said, what
43:13
Speaker 3: counties are the folks migrating to in West Virginia? Do
43:15
Speaker 3: you have that data? If they're coming here where? What
43:18
Speaker 3: are some of the counties that I would imagine Berkeley's
43:20
Speaker 3: probably on that list?
43:21
Speaker 9: Jefferson, Yeah, you really look at it. The counties that
43:24
Speaker 9: are growing. You have a lot that are kind of
43:26
Speaker 9: saying stagnant. The Eastern Panhandle has seen some real growth
43:30
Speaker 9: where you and I live out in Putnam County has
43:32
Speaker 9: been growing a little bit, not as great. Montgelia County
43:35
Speaker 9: has been doing well. So we've seen the growth focused
43:38
Speaker 9: in a few areas. But what we have noticed is
43:42
Speaker 9: that drain that's been going around is slowing in a
43:45
Speaker 9: lot of areas. So I think that's a positive that
43:47
Speaker 9: that is movement in the right direction. But where you're
43:49
Speaker 9: really looking, where the growth is coming, Eastern Panhandle, Montingeya, Putnam,
43:54
Speaker 9: those are the primary areas.
43:55
Speaker 3: All right, Brian, will have you on again soon. I appreciate.
43:57
Speaker 3: Happy anniversary, by the way, thank you. You got a
43:59

44:06

44:09

47:26
Speaker 3: please pet of the week, Doctor Casey Sackevillbridge Valley, And
47:29
Speaker 3: just added to the show, Shan Hill, the director of KRT.
47:32
Speaker 3: They had a big board meeting. We had a public
47:35
Speaker 3: hearing on some of the changes to KRT yesterday and
47:38
Speaker 3: the board is actually meeting probably at this hour. We'll
47:40
Speaker 3: get Sean Hill to talk about it tomorrow. Last night's
47:44
Speaker 3: Last Night the Dirty Birds fell in a big way
47:46
Speaker 3: to York and the Atlantic League Championship Series. Let's go
47:49
Speaker 3: live to go Mark Ballpark. Jill Garren is there, Jill,
47:51
Speaker 3: good morning. Give us a quick recap.
47:54
Speaker 18: Hey, Dave, Yeah, russy game yesterday. I mean to be
47:56
Speaker 18: honest with you, we always say how great it is
47:58
Speaker 18: that we can play in the rain because of turf,
48:00
Speaker 18: but that really just messed up our pitchers and not
48:03
Speaker 18: just the dirty Birds pitchers, the other teams pitchers had
48:06
Speaker 18: issues finding the strike zone wild pitches. It just so
48:09
Speaker 18: happens that our pictures are the ones that walked a
48:12
Speaker 18: few more guys.
48:13
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they put up some some serious numbers
48:15
Speaker 3: on the board. The other guys did, But we're gonna
48:17
Speaker 3: forget about that. We're going to hit the road, travel today,
48:20
Speaker 3: and then we'll be up in York, Pennsylvania tomorrow night.
48:23
Speaker 3: But the Bird's got to get it in gear because
48:24
Speaker 3: we're down.
48:25
Speaker 18: Too, Jill exactly. So need to win the next three
48:28
Speaker 18: games to win that championship right now. This is actually
48:31
Speaker 18: a pretty depressing stat Since nineteen ninety one, we have
48:35
Speaker 18: lost fourteen consecutive Championship Series games. So looking to break
48:40
Speaker 18: that curse right now, trying to bring home a championship
48:42
Speaker 18: from York, all right.
48:43
Speaker 3: And remind people of because I don't know how many
48:45
Speaker 3: I don't know. I was gonna say, I don't know
48:46
Speaker 3: how many people from here are going to go to York, Pennsylvania,
48:49
Speaker 3: but a heck of a lot went to Gastonia, so
48:51
Speaker 3: you never know. But for those that can't go and
48:53
Speaker 3: they want to watch the game, remind us where they
48:55
Speaker 3: can watch the game.
48:56
Speaker 18: Yep, you can watch at flowbaseball dot com. You can
49:00
Speaker 18: listen and watch York's broadcast. That will not be on
49:03
Speaker 18: the broadcast for this weekend. But if you're thinking about
49:05
Speaker 18: making the trip through, fifty of us already going, so
49:08
Speaker 18: come on and join the crowd.
49:09
Speaker 3: All right, joll we'll talk again tomorrow. How's that?
49:12
Speaker 18: Absolutely?

49:25
Speaker 3: barely survived. January sixth, a complete lie was used to
49:28
Speaker 3: bring violence to the Capitol by an electorius despot who
49:31
Speaker 3: wanted to terminate the Constitution and to invoke martial law.
49:34
Speaker 3: The US Supreme Court has given this maniac immunity for
49:37
Speaker 3: all core presidential duties, which includes law enforcement actions. But yeah,
49:41
Speaker 3: both sides quit the BS, says the Texture Texas. President
49:45
Speaker 3: Trump has proven best policies for the country. The last
49:49
Speaker 3: three and a half years of Biden and Harris policies
49:51
Speaker 3: have been extremely detrimental. This is common sense, Dave says.
49:55
Speaker 3: A Texture Texas says, even at the birds get second placed.
49:59
Speaker 3: They have come a long way from being the perennial
50:00
Speaker 3: basement dwellers of the past. Good luck to them, good
50:04
Speaker 3: job to them. Tech says, I like how West Virginia
50:07
Speaker 3: is growing, but only like three counties. What about the
50:09
Speaker 3: other fifty two hecty county with the capitol of Kanawa
50:12
Speaker 3: is consolidating schools because all the people are moving to
50:15
Speaker 3: Putnam County, says a Texture. So closed with some news
50:20
Speaker 3: this morning. They got the geyser at Patrick Street stopped yesterday,
50:24
Speaker 3: but we are told that the intersection of Fourth Avenue
50:26
Speaker 3: and Patrick Street will be closed for at least a
50:28
Speaker 3: few days. Is following that water main break yesterday. Not
50:32
Speaker 3: a good day for West Virginia American Water yesterday as
50:35
Speaker 3: they had that issue, but also issues in Winfield and
50:37
Speaker 3: Dunbar as well. The Winfield issue led to schools being
50:40
Speaker 3: closed in that area in the Putnam County Courthouse as
50:42
Speaker 3: well as Winfield City Hall. Would not want to be
50:45
Speaker 3: the spokesperson for them. But Megan does a great job,
50:48
Speaker 3: she really does. But Dave Allen Showing five eighty Live
