- 0:08Speaker 2: The story you're about to hear is true. The names
- 0:11Speaker 2: have been changed to protect the innocent dragnet. You're a
- 0:22Speaker 2: detective sergeant. You're assigned to Bunco Fugitive Detail. An organized
- 0:27Speaker 2: gang of pickpockets is working in your city. None of

- 1:02Speaker 4: Tip's wrong then, huh yeah, it looks like it four
- 1:05Speaker 4: two now all thought.
- 1:06Speaker 3: All we can do is sit and wait for a
- 1:07Speaker 3: reply on the radiogram. He's gotta be someplace and he
- 1:09Speaker 3: isn't gonna stop working. They'll be wood on him somewhere.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I'll be glad and we turned the key. Uh excuse me, Yes, sir.
- 1:15Speaker 2: How wouldn't if they could help me?
- 1:17Speaker 3: Oh? Well try, sir. You wanna come on in? What's
- 1:22Speaker 3: it all about?
- 1:23Speaker 5: I've been robbed, sir, and they took my money, all
- 1:26Speaker 5: of it, every bit. I don't know how, but they
- 1:28Speaker 5: took it all. I don't know what to do.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Well, do you wanna sit down?
- 1:31Speaker 6: Yes?
- 1:32Speaker 1: Please?
- 1:36Speaker 5: I don't know how they did it. I tried to
- 1:37Speaker 5: be so careful, but they took it all. Thirty seven
- 1:41Speaker 5: years doing without and now I got nothing.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Oh. This is my partner, Frank Smith. My name is Friday.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Maybe if you tell us what happened here we could
- 1:47Speaker 3: help you.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Yes, maybe, I'm Lewis Bonning. Yes, sir, I lived at
- 1:52Speaker 5: eighteen twenty Woodworth Court, Los Angeles, twelve. I have a
- 1:55Speaker 5: room there. I see fourteen dollars a week in privileges.
- 1:59Speaker 1: If you tell us what happened to Bonning, we might
- 2:01Speaker 1: be able to.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Do something for you.
- 2:02Speaker 5: And I'm trying to tell you, trying to think of
- 2:04Speaker 5: what happened. I don't believe it yet.
- 2:06Speaker 3: An you said you were robbed, Is that right?
- 2:08Speaker 6: Yes? Two hundred dollars all gone?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Or were you held up?
- 2:13Speaker 6: No? Nothing like that. If it was that way i'd know.
- 2:16Speaker 5: But just all of a sudden, I put my hand
- 2:18Speaker 5: in my pocket to feel the money, and it wasn't there.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Nothing was there. I had a pocket full of empty.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I'm ill, sir, to usually carry that much money around
- 2:26Speaker 4: with you.
- 2:26Speaker 5: No, mister, I got it from the bank this morning.
- 2:29Speaker 5: I'm going away. I was leaving Los Angeles. That's why
- 2:32Speaker 5: I had the money, so I could leave.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Well, I suppose you start right at the beginning and
- 2:36Speaker 3: tell us the whole story with you.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Well, my wife passed on four weeks ago, Monday, April fourth,
- 2:42Speaker 5: and that's when it happened to April fourth.
- 2:45Speaker 6: We came to this country when we were both young.
- 2:48Speaker 6: She died four weeks ago.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yes, sir, if you had gone about the death, please.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Well, I thought i'd maybe go back to cars it
- 2:54Speaker 5: to live with one of my daughters. She asked me
- 2:56Speaker 5: to come, and I thought I would, so I.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Drew out the money. You took the money out of
- 2:59Speaker 6: the bank, Yes, this morning, two hundred dollars.
- 3:03Speaker 5: That's what we'd saved. I couldn't leave it here in
- 3:05Speaker 5: the bank if I was going to be in Chicago.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Well, you could have had the money transferred, you know.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I guess that's what I should have done, but it's
- 3:11Speaker 6: too late. Now.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Did you have the money when you left the bank?
- 3:15Speaker 5: Yes, I rolled the bills up and put them here
- 3:17Speaker 5: in my pocket. Here listen on the left side. I
- 3:21Speaker 5: kept my hand on the money, so I knew it
- 3:22Speaker 5: was there.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Well, what'd you do After you left the bank and.
- 3:25Speaker 5: I was going home? I thought i'd walk home. I
- 3:28Speaker 5: went down the street and then I thought i'd stop
- 3:29Speaker 5: for some coffee. I was all packed up my room,
- 3:32Speaker 5: so I didn't want to make a mess. I thought
- 3:34Speaker 5: i'd have a cup of coffee out. I went into
- 3:37Speaker 5: the big market. They have a coffee condor there, and
- 3:39Speaker 5: I went in and sat down. All the time I
- 3:42Speaker 5: kept my hand on the money. I could feel it
- 3:44Speaker 5: through the pants.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It was in my pocket.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Yes, I had the coffee in and I went to
- 3:48Speaker 5: go out of the market. As I walked through, all
- 3:50Speaker 5: the people of box fell off a stack of boxes.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Who'd almost hit me. I didn't think anything about it.
- 3:56Speaker 5: If nobody was hurt. All the people in the market
- 3:59Speaker 5: came over to me and asked I was all right,
- 4:00Speaker 5: But I said yes, I was all right. Then I
- 4:03Speaker 5: went out of the market. I got on the street.
- 4:06Speaker 5: When I remembered about the money, it was gone.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I'd have been taken from me in the market, Is
- 4:10Speaker 3: that right?
- 4:11Speaker 6: Yes, mister? Which in the market?
- 4:13Speaker 4: I think, Well, let's get this trait while you were
- 4:15Speaker 4: in there? Did anyone bump into you?
- 4:18Speaker 6: I don't understand.
- 4:19Speaker 4: I mean anyone jostly you bump into you?
- 4:21Speaker 3: Without reason?
- 4:22Speaker 6: No? No, I don't remember.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Did anybody follow you from the bank to the market
- 4:26Speaker 3: that you noticed?
- 4:27Speaker 6: It was hard to tell, mister. There are a lot
- 4:29Speaker 6: of people on the streets. Would be hard to tell
- 4:31Speaker 6: if there was anyone.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Yes, I understand. But was there any one person you
- 4:35Speaker 3: recall having seen this morning, one face that you might remember.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Maybe no, mister. I tried to think about it, but
- 4:40Speaker 5: there's no one I see. Do you think you'll get
- 4:43Speaker 5: it back for me?
- 4:44Speaker 3: Sure?
- 4:44Speaker 6: The money? It makes a big difference.
- 4:47Speaker 3: How was that before?
- 4:48Speaker 5: When I had the money, I could go and live
- 4:50Speaker 5: with my daughter. With the money, I could be independent.
- 4:53Speaker 5: It be a different feeling, you understand, don't you.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yes, sure I do.
- 4:57Speaker 5: That's why it's so important you get the money back
- 4:59Speaker 5: so I can go live with my daughter, So I
- 5:00Speaker 5: can do that. That's showing the reason I troubles you. The
- 5:04Speaker 5: only reason I have to ask you to find the man.
- 5:06Speaker 5: That's the only reason I got.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That's a little different with us, sir, huh, we've got
- 5:10Speaker 3: another one. For the past several weeks, we've been getting
- 5:15Speaker 3: reports of the existence of an organized gang of pickpockets
- 5:18Speaker 3: working in Los Angeles. Contrary to most opinion, a pickpocket
- 5:21Speaker 3: seldom works alone. Like everything else, it's gotten to be
- 5:24Speaker 3: a highly specialized operation. Normally, there are several men to
- 5:28Speaker 3: each team, the jug mob who usually spends his time
- 5:32Speaker 3: in banks looking for the victim, the shover who pushes
- 5:35Speaker 3: or bumps the victims so his money can be taken,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and the wire who does the actual pocket picking. In
- 5:41Speaker 3: certain types of operation, the jug mob is replaced by
- 5:43Speaker 3: the shark, who works street cars and spots people who
- 5:46Speaker 3: have large amounts of money. Under normal circumstances, a professional
- 5:49Speaker 3: group of pickpockets can take approximately five thousand dollars a
- 5:52Speaker 3: day out of a tip or a crowd. Eleven forty
- 5:56Speaker 3: seven am, we had the victim. Lewis Bonning looked through
- 5:59Speaker 3: the pictures No One pickpockets for a possible identification of
- 6:02Speaker 3: the man who taking his money. He was unable to
- 6:04Speaker 3: find anybody who looked familiar. We told him to go home,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and we said that we'd be in touch with him.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Twelve thirty five pm. Frank and I checked back into
- 6:11Speaker 3: the office. They're roughly huh.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 3: They all come out of that killer, don't they. I
- 6:16Speaker 3: sure hope we can do some good for him.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, nice old guy.
- 6:20Speaker 3: You wanna get in touch with Slim Raymos. Let's go
- 6:22Speaker 3: down and talk to him. He might be able to
- 6:23Speaker 3: come up with something.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll get his number. Get a new book.
- 6:28Speaker 3: This is getting almost impossible to use.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Yeah, h I said, that's numbers all crossed out, you
- 6:32Speaker 4: know when they change the prefixes. Yeah, I made a
- 6:35Speaker 4: mess out of my book and it's.
- 6:42Speaker 3: That's great.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Or a.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Slim Raymus there he slimed a Frank Smith.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah good, yeah, say Slim. Wait a minute now, the
- 7:04Speaker 4: reason I called you, Joe and I'd like to come
- 7:06Speaker 4: down and talk to you.
- 7:06Speaker 3: If it's okay, you're gonna.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Be there this afternoon. Uh no, nothing wrong, just a
- 7:11Speaker 1: couple of things we want to check over here.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, see here on two thirty Huh is that
- 7:18Speaker 4: all right?
- 7:19Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Okay, now I know where it is right, see you then,
- 7:24Speaker 4: he's gonna be in all afternoon, said he'd be glad
- 7:25Speaker 4: to see this.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Good. Maybe he's got something we can use on this thing.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Well, he'll lay it out for us if he has.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Oh, it's the one good thing about starting with nothing
- 7:32Speaker 3: in it. Yeah, we can only go one way. Twelve
- 7:39Speaker 3: o six pm, Frank and I checked out of the
- 7:41Speaker 3: office and we started for Santa Monica. Slim Ramos had
- 7:44Speaker 3: been one of the best pickpockets in the business. He'd
- 7:46Speaker 3: been arrested and served the term in San Quentin. After
- 7:49Speaker 3: he'd been parode, he'd opened a small stand on one
- 7:51Speaker 3: of the amusement piers near the beach. From his past record,
- 7:54Speaker 3: Ramos had been cooperative with the police department, and several
- 7:57Speaker 3: arrests were attributed to his information. Raymos was operating a
- 8:00Speaker 3: Wheel of Fortune booth at the end of the pier.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Frank and I parked the car and walked out.
- 8:08Speaker 1: By the place.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Huh, Yeah, I got to bring the kids down here
- 8:11Speaker 4: some Sunday.
- 8:11Speaker 3: They get a real kick out of it. Yeah, that's
- 8:13Speaker 3: Slim's booth there. Yeah, I don't see him.
- 8:18Speaker 1: He said he'd be here.
- 8:19Speaker 3: He might be around back.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Yeah, i'd sure like to win one of those hands.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah, bigg ones.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Right to slim you around?
- 8:27Speaker 5: Yeah, hold on, be right out, all right, Joe Frank
- 8:32Speaker 5: I from the backpackaging some groceres.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 8:34Speaker 2: What can I do for you?
- 8:35Speaker 3: I'd like talk to you about a cannon operation.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I should have known.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Come on back here, we can sit down, all right,
- 8:40Speaker 5: watch your heads on the counter. Yeah, got a couple
- 8:42Speaker 5: of shares back here, Come on I and finish up
- 8:44Speaker 5: with a second.
- 8:45Speaker 6: All right, go ahead, Oh I want you to bomb.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You got any rumbles about a bunch work in the
- 8:50Speaker 3: downtown area?
- 8:51Speaker 5: What kind of operations? Judd Moobs think I heard something
- 8:54Speaker 5: about a bunch coming in from the east KC. I
- 8:57Speaker 5: think seems I heard they worked a couple of skiol
- 8:59Speaker 5: dates with a cornie back there. Boss didn't know they
- 9:01Speaker 5: were working. When he found out, he had him kicked
- 9:03Speaker 5: off the lot.
- 9:03Speaker 3: You got any names for us, Nah?
- 9:05Speaker 5: Not right off, Gonna check around, might be able to
- 9:07Speaker 5: come up with him.
- 9:08Speaker 6: What's the bit.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they've been scoring good work in the downtown area.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Took an elderly man for his life savings this morning.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Uh huh, figures huh.
- 9:16Speaker 5: They always pick on the elderly ones. Bump into a
- 9:18Speaker 5: young guy might give you trouble. Pick the old ones,
- 9:20Speaker 5: they don't seem to notice it.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, how you been doing swim?
- 9:22Speaker 6: Oh good?
- 9:23Speaker 5: Got it real good. I ain't killing the world, but
- 9:25Speaker 5: my rent's paid. I know there ain't gonna be a
- 9:27Speaker 5: fuzz on my tail tonight. I got it real good.
- 9:29Speaker 3: How long have you been here? Now?
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's good?
- 9:31Speaker 3: About a year.
- 9:32Speaker 5: I thought, if I could get permission, might go out
- 9:34Speaker 5: with a carnie this year.
- 9:35Speaker 3: You know what.
- 9:35Speaker 5: The front end got a letter from a friend. It's
- 9:37Speaker 5: got a grind store. One of the big ones says
- 9:40Speaker 5: he might be able to get me in a grind store. Yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 5: you know, everybody plays, everybody wins, pay a dime to
- 9:45Speaker 5: win a piece of slum with maybe a couple of cents. Well,
- 9:47Speaker 5: this carne I might go with's got no grift in
- 9:49Speaker 5: the front end, all percentage games. The way, I figured,
- 9:52Speaker 5: if you go out with a good one, whether old's
- 9:53Speaker 5: gonna do all right?
- 9:54Speaker 1: You figured you can come out better than you do here.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Oh sure, you see, we get a real good play
- 9:58Speaker 5: over the weekends. Regular days is kind of slow. Go
- 10:00Speaker 5: out with a big carnie. You can draw crowds anytime.
- 10:03Speaker 5: If the weather's good, bound to come out better.
- 10:05Speaker 3: You'll check into those names for us with your slim.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll make a couple of calls.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Can you make them now?
- 10:10Speaker 5: No, I have to get in touch with the guy tonight.
- 10:11Speaker 5: I'll get back to your first thing in the morning.
- 10:13Speaker 5: All right, same number in Michigan, five to one one.
- 10:15Speaker 3: That's right, buncle fugitive.
- 10:16Speaker 6: All right, I'll give you a call.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Buy you guys cupt coffee.
- 10:19Speaker 3: No thanks, Slim, We're just gonna want to come along
- 10:21Speaker 3: and buy you one.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Now hold on, I want to check with Harry, have
- 10:24Speaker 5: him keep an eye on things.
- 10:25Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Here, you go ahead, Okay, I'll.
- 10:27Speaker 6: Watch the counter.
- 10:28Speaker 5: I came up too fast the other day, like took
- 10:30Speaker 5: all the.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Skin off my back.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Yeah, hold on a minute, I'll be right back all right.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Nice fucking place, huh.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, he's painted it since we were down here last time.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's go painted up the.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Place, I Slim, Yeah, I thought I might turn a
- 10:47Speaker 5: bigger tip of the place.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Look good.
- 10:48Speaker 6: You know, people like a clean looking place.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Are the rest of the boots doing down here? Slim?
- 10:52Speaker 5: Were pretty good? And I told you great other time.
- 10:54Speaker 6: It's a little slow.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Any grift down here, No, he.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Said, there is.
- 10:58Speaker 5: I haven't heard of it in the Santa Monica Police Department,
- 11:01Speaker 5: Lieutenant Cunningham.
- 11:02Speaker 6: He keeps the place real clean.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 11:04Speaker 5: The last thing I heard about was a guy who
- 11:05Speaker 5: was working with a camelback wheel. What camelback like mine?
- 11:09Speaker 5: Only this was gaffed. How smoothest pitcher around? The arrow
- 11:13Speaker 5: is connected to a spindle. Spindle goes through a stand.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Looks like it'd be no way to gee it. Plane
- 11:17Speaker 5: pipe looks clean?
- 11:18Speaker 1: What's a gimmick?
- 11:19Speaker 5: All the frame rests on four pins. Pins are supposed
- 11:21Speaker 5: to be what anchors it to the counter?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Now, three of the pins go into one piece of
- 11:24Speaker 5: the counter. They really do hold the wheel in place.
- 11:26Speaker 5: The other one goes through a separate piece of wood
- 11:28Speaker 5: on the booth side of the counter. There's a space
- 11:30Speaker 5: between the board on the booth side and one of
- 11:32Speaker 5: the three legs go through. Now, the pin in the
- 11:34Speaker 5: fourth leg is loose. It's connected with a bunch of
- 11:36Speaker 5: levers inside. The pipe acts as a brake on the wheel.
- 11:39Speaker 5: All the operator has to do is lean against the
- 11:41Speaker 5: board and he's got complete control of the wheel.
- 11:43Speaker 6: All the time.
- 11:43Speaker 5: It's a real nice deal of ith the way they
- 11:45Speaker 5: figured it's perfect. In case they get a cowboy in
- 11:48Speaker 5: the crowd, the mark can pick the wheel right up
- 11:49Speaker 5: out of the counter, shows that there's no wires running
- 11:52Speaker 5: to it. Wheel's gaffed. There's no way to prove it.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Set it up with a couple of sticks in front.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Let them win a couple of times. You got it made.
- 12:00Speaker 6: It's the way they figure.
- 12:01Speaker 5: It doesn't work out though, real and like on my wheel,
- 12:04Speaker 5: I got one hundred and twenty numbers on it. Figure
- 12:06Speaker 5: I get good action. I'm gonna have maybe half of
- 12:08Speaker 5: them covered right off. The odds are on my side.
- 12:11Speaker 5: A lot of the rest is only one winner. Half
- 12:13Speaker 5: of them covered means a gross of about six bucks.
- 12:16Speaker 5: I give away five dollars worth of grocery.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Even with a.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Winner, I come out every time a percentage.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Of prove it.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Look at it that way. You don't need a gap wheel.
- 12:23Speaker 3: That's too bad. More of them don't figure it like this.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I suppose it took me a long time to
- 12:27Speaker 5: find it out.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but you came up with the answers.
- 12:29Speaker 5: I hope I can do the same for you. On
- 12:30Speaker 5: the cannon operation, so do we. It's funny I get
- 12:33Speaker 5: to think of when I was working as a wire
- 12:35Speaker 5: Now we figured that anytime we could lift a poke
- 12:38Speaker 5: from the mark was a big laugh.
- 12:40Speaker 6: A lot of difference.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Now, yeah, now I sleep nights.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Two fifteen pm, we continued to talk to our informants,
- 12:52Speaker 3: swim Ramos. He said that he didn't know the name
- 12:54Speaker 3: of the carnival the possible suspects had been fired from.
- 12:56Speaker 3: He said that he'd call some of his contacts and
- 12:58Speaker 3: try to get the information for us. We set up
- 13:01Speaker 3: a time for him to get in touch with us,
- 13:02Speaker 3: and then Frank and I drove back to the office.
- 13:05Speaker 3: We contacted Captain Didion and made arrangements for additional men
- 13:08Speaker 3: to be assigned to help us. Sergeants John Debetta and
- 13:11Speaker 3: Danny Gilmore were asked to aid us in the search
- 13:13Speaker 3: of the market where the victim had been robbed. We
- 13:16Speaker 3: spent the next three hours in the market looking at
- 13:18Speaker 3: the crowd in the hopes that we'd see ann pickpocket
- 13:20Speaker 3: or even see a wire in operation, but the surveillance
- 13:23Speaker 3: netted us nothing. We made arrangements for the victim's bank
- 13:26Speaker 3: to be watched the following morning, six fifteen pm. Frank
- 13:30Speaker 3: and I got back to the squadroom.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Well, you sure he does a good business? Sendent right
- 13:34Speaker 1: the market, Joe.
- 13:35Speaker 3: A lot of people going there.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, what's the matter with you?
- 13:39Speaker 3: Well, I was just thinking, he said, it comes down
- 13:41Speaker 3: to the point where the only way to hang on
- 13:42Speaker 3: to your money is to carry it in your hand
- 13:43Speaker 3: and keep your fist closed.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Starting close.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I was talking with Lieutenant Jack Swan. He was telling
- 13:49Speaker 4: me a guy came in here from Nebraska, came in
- 13:51Speaker 4: by bus, you know, were sitting in the station waiting
- 13:53Speaker 4: for a coach to take him up the north. Had
- 13:55Speaker 4: all his money in his shoe and his shoe, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 4: had in his left shoe. Had the money all flat
- 14:00Speaker 4: so we could walk on it.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Figured it'd be safe there. It wasn't it. Now dozed
- 14:04Speaker 3: off for a minute.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Next thing, he knows, shoes off, the money's gone.
- 14:07Speaker 3: How would anybody know where it was?
- 14:09Speaker 4: I don't know the guy that took it, founded though,
- 14:11Speaker 4: guy dozed off for a minute, loses his shoe and
- 14:13Speaker 4: all his money.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Anything turn up on it? No again, Well con fugitive Friday, Yeah, yeah, slim.
- 14:24Speaker 3: What was that name again? Yeah? Uh, what do you
- 14:28Speaker 3: say about it? Wait a minute, right, yeah, here you go,
- 14:36Speaker 3: pencil soon? Yeah, okay, thank you, all right, Slim, go ahead,
- 14:41Speaker 3: whether it was a K what.
- 14:46Speaker 7: O l C se isn't Charlie?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Oh t t right?
- 14:51Speaker 3: You know where they're staying. All right, we'll give us
- 14:54Speaker 3: a call for anything more. Turns up? Huh right, okay, Slim, thanks.
- 14:58Speaker 1: A lot, right bye, How do you do?
- 15:02Speaker 3: We're pretty good? Three names of the guys who worked
- 15:05Speaker 3: to Connie and KC. Eh Slim talked to a friend.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Got the information that the guys who work in the
- 15:09Speaker 3: downtown area have been scoring real good.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Say where we could find him?
- 15:12Speaker 3: No, he's gonna try to get the address for us. Well,
- 15:14Speaker 3: we took a big jump just knowing who they are.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Deal now is to make it work. What do you mean,
- 15:18Speaker 3: al Slim says his bunch is pretty hinky. They're playing
- 15:21Speaker 3: it real careful. Yeah, words out. They got two more
- 15:23Speaker 3: big scores to make it and then they're gonna leave town.
- 15:36Speaker 8: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 15:39Speaker 8: police force election.
- 15:49Speaker 3: The three names are informant had given us were Howard Kremer,
- 15:52Speaker 3: Victor Lyden, and Edward Olkin. We had the names checked
- 15:55Speaker 3: through our record bureau, but we found that none of
- 15:57Speaker 3: the three men had been arrested in Los Angeles. We
- 16:00Speaker 3: got a radiogram off to the police department in Kansas City,
- 16:03Speaker 3: the last place the trio was known to have worked.
- 16:05Speaker 3: We asked that all information on the thieves beforewarded to it.
- 16:09Speaker 3: We also set a teletype at George Breton up at Sacramento, CII,
- 16:12Speaker 3: asking him to check the names for us. The following morning, Wednesday,
- 16:15Speaker 3: Mail eleventh, we got word from Kansas City that the
- 16:17Speaker 3: officials there were forwarding mug shots and descriptions of the
- 16:20Speaker 3: three men. During the day, Frank and I met with
- 16:23Speaker 3: Captain Didion and a surveillance of the downtown area banks
- 16:26Speaker 3: was set up. On Friday morning, when Frank and I
- 16:29Speaker 3: checked in the work, a special delivery letter was waiting
- 16:31Speaker 3: for us. In it, we found the records and pictures
- 16:33Speaker 3: of premer Lydon and Alcotte. The pictures were handed over
- 16:36Speaker 3: to the photo lab and they started to reproduce them.
- 16:39Speaker 3: The descriptions were sent to the print shop and mo
- 16:41Speaker 3: o sheets were made up as soon as possible. The
- 16:44Speaker 3: pictures and the bulletins were distributed to all bank guards
- 16:46Speaker 3: in the area. Additional officers from Bunco. Fugitive were placed
- 16:50Speaker 3: in the vicinity. Frank and I maintained a ruling stakeout
- 16:53Speaker 3: in the downtown area. At nine pm Friday night, the
- 16:56Speaker 3: banks closed and we'd got no report that the thieves
- 16:58Speaker 3: had worked. Local broadcasts were gotten out on the end,
- 17:02Speaker 3: but there were no Replying. Monday, May sixteenth, the plan
- 17:05Speaker 3: was put into effect again no results. Tuesday, the gang
- 17:09Speaker 3: didn't work, began to look as if they might have
- 17:11Speaker 3: closed up operations in Los Angeles and moved. On Wednesday,
- 17:15Speaker 3: May eighteen, Thank and I came back from lunch. I
- 17:18Speaker 3: get it, uncle, fugit it Friday, Yes, sir, that's right?
- 17:27Speaker 3: Where right? No, don't do anything to let him know.
- 17:32Speaker 7: Right, Well, let's.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Go some good. The Shover bank guard just spotted him.
- 17:43Speaker 3: The call had come from a bank at the corner
- 17:45Speaker 3: of Seventh in Jackson Streets. The guard told us that
- 17:47Speaker 3: he'd seen one of the suspects enter the bank and
- 17:49Speaker 3: under the pretense of filling out deposit slips, observed the
- 17:52Speaker 3: withdrawals that the customers were making. It took us a
- 17:54Speaker 3: little under three minutes to get to the address. We
- 17:57Speaker 3: checked with the guard and he pointed out the suspect.
- 18:00Speaker 3: He pretended to make out a deposit slip while I
- 18:01Speaker 3: waited at the new account desk. When we entered the bank,
- 18:05Speaker 3: the suspect was standing at the teller's window. In front
- 18:07Speaker 3: of him was an elderly man. As the lion moved up,
- 18:10Speaker 3: the suspect began to examine the slip that he'd made out. Then,
- 18:13Speaker 3: as the elderly man took his turn at the window,
- 18:15Speaker 3: the suspect walked away and stopped by the door. He
- 18:18Speaker 3: waited for the man to finish his business at the
- 18:20Speaker 3: teller's counter. Then as he passed through the door, the
- 18:22Speaker 3: suspect fell and stepped behind him. Frank and I followed
- 18:25Speaker 3: him down the street. As he walked through the crowds,
- 18:27Speaker 3: he was joined by Edward Alcott, the shover in the operation.
- 18:31Speaker 3: The elderly man entered a small tobacco store, and as
- 18:33Speaker 3: he went through the door, the wire Howard Kremer joined
- 18:36Speaker 3: the other two suspects. As the elderly man stood at
- 18:39Speaker 3: the counter waiting to be served, the shover walked over
- 18:41Speaker 3: to the magazine rang. He stood looking at the magazines
- 18:44Speaker 3: for a moment, and then as he turned away, he
- 18:45Speaker 3: seemingly tripped and fell against the proposed victim. Both Frank
- 18:50Speaker 3: and I knew what it was coming. We were watching
- 18:51Speaker 3: for it, and yet and he missed the actual fift.
- 18:53Speaker 3: The wire moved in and removed the victim's money so
- 18:55Speaker 3: fast that we couldn't see it. The shover took the
- 18:58Speaker 3: wallet from the wire, and the gang was ready to
- 19:00Speaker 3: move on. Frank and I stepped into him. All right,
- 19:02Speaker 3: mister police officers, you're under a ask for what? Stop dreaming?
- 19:05Speaker 3: You know the rot and now come on, come all right, mister,
- 19:19Speaker 3: come on on, your get up.
- 19:23Speaker 2: You're waiting to compleat me alone. You're going to recract
- 19:26Speaker 2: this shoving a citizen around?
- 19:28Speaker 3: No reason for this. How about the other two? They're
- 19:29Speaker 3: out all right, Let's get him downtown. How about the
- 19:32Speaker 3: victim until he left when the beat started? Better try
- 19:35Speaker 3: to catch him.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You're gonna be sorry for this stewweight. You're gonna be
- 19:38Speaker 2: real sorry shoving an not a citizen around.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a trouble with you punks. What do you
- 19:41Speaker 3: mean you're rung on both counts. The three suspects were
- 19:49Speaker 3: taken into custody and brought downtown. The victim's wallet was
- 19:51Speaker 3: found on the person of Edward Dolphin, who was identified
- 19:53Speaker 3: by the owner and booked his evidence. Three point fifteen pm.
- 19:56Speaker 3: We took the wire Howard Kremer to the interrogation room.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Sit down, Trammer.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, you want to give us a statement
- 20:09Speaker 3: or what, come off? But you know what we're talking about.
- 20:11Speaker 2: You've got to have me a cross with somebody else.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I'm trying to level with you. I don't know what
- 20:15Speaker 2: you're talking about.
- 20:15Speaker 3: You want us to lay it out for you.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I don't care much either way. You guys slamm into
- 20:19Speaker 2: a store where I'm trying to buy a pack of
- 20:20Speaker 2: cigarettes and all of a sudden I got handcuffs on you.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Tell me I'm hooked for being a pickpocket.
- 20:24Speaker 3: That's the way you want to tell it, dur ain't
- 20:25Speaker 3: any other words?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Your two friends tell it different?
- 20:28Speaker 3: What two friends? Two fellas? We picked up with you.
- 20:30Speaker 2: This is a big time a lot of people. You
- 20:32Speaker 2: walk into a store, you don't ask who's standing next
- 20:33Speaker 2: to you.
- 20:34Speaker 1: They put the whole deal on you. Who lying?
- 20:36Speaker 3: And Alton never heard them? How long do you thinkure
- 20:39Speaker 3: you're going to keep this up, mister.
- 20:40Speaker 6: As long as it takes to get you on my side.
- 20:42Speaker 3: They don't build days that long.
- 20:44Speaker 6: If that's your loss, I'm a nice fellow if you
- 20:45Speaker 6: take the time to get to know me.
- 20:46Speaker 3: All right, Kramer, this is way off the road. Now,
- 20:48Speaker 3: maybe you got all day. We haven't. You can either
- 20:50Speaker 3: give it to us here and now we can drop
- 20:51Speaker 3: you into a cell and let you wait it out.
- 20:53Speaker 6: You put me in a tank and I'll be out
- 20:55Speaker 6: in half an hour.
- 20:57Speaker 1: How many times you've been arrested? Who says there was
- 20:58Speaker 1: a first? How many times you've got the books?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Look it up?
- 21:01Speaker 3: We ask you a question.
- 21:02Speaker 2: So I'm not a genius.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I got trouble with addition, take everything out of your pockets.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Come on, or why Look, you run a lot of
- 21:09Speaker 3: funny time here, Kremer.

- 21:12Speaker 6: You got a job, yeah, I'm a president of a bank.

- 21:23Speaker 2: You can sign a receipt.
- 21:24Speaker 3: They aren't got to be taken from me. You want
- 21:25Speaker 3: to see what you're carrying.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Okay, you boys deserve a break. But I'll tell you now.
- 21:29Speaker 2: The numbers on my phone book are mine. Don't go

- 22:07Speaker 2: Look, cop, I've been around. I've been with most of
- 22:09Speaker 2: the cardies in the country one time or another. I
- 22:12Speaker 2: know the score. There ain't a place in the world
- 22:13Speaker 2: that the fixed camp be put in. And why don't

- 22:42Speaker 3: anybody like you. You've been on the road taking money
