- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, it's a funny story that on my
- 0:03Speaker 1: birthday October twentieth, the Mariners were in the.
- 0:06Speaker 2: ALCS against the Blue Jays.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Twenty four years earlier, when I was turning ten years old,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Mariners were up at Yankee Stadium taking on the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Inks in the ALCS. And I haven't shared the story yet,
- 0:21Speaker 1: but George Steinbrenner on my tenth birthday on October twentieth
- 0:26Speaker 1: actually made me, got me a birthday cake and in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the third inning, I blow out candles up in his suite.
- 0:33Speaker 1: And I want to share that moment because it all
- 0:36Speaker 1: feels relative, doesn't it. I mean, you look at yesterday
- 0:40Speaker 1: and George Springer with that homer. I want to play
- 0:42Speaker 1: you one specific call because I really missed Dan Schulman
- 0:47Speaker 1: on ESPN Radio Baseball. I know, Ryan, you remember him
- 0:50Speaker 1: on ESPN Radio doing all those postseasons, and you know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: at least we get to hear him a little bit.
- 0:56Speaker 1: That's the bright side of the Jay's winning. The other
- 0:59Speaker 1: bright side don manningly, and I'm going to go against
- 1:02Speaker 1: every Yankee fan on the planet right now, and I
- 1:06Speaker 1: will also say we're coalescing around Donnie for sure, but
- 1:09Speaker 1: most of us in the Yankee universe do not want
- 1:11Speaker 1: the Jays to win.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I get it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: They're cocky, they're arrogant. Vlag Guerrero, I don't know. There's
- 1:19Speaker 1: no words for that guy in his arrogance. But do
- 1:22Speaker 1: it for Donnie, as Ryan Bogano said last night, right Ryan.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Oh, indeed, do it for Donny Baseball. However, many opportunities
- 1:30Speaker 3: that he wasn't able to get with the Yankees, and
- 1:33Speaker 3: even the opportunities that he didn't get with the Dodgers
- 1:36Speaker 3: through all those playoff runs that he managed them through.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I mean, it's borderline criminal honestly as a New York
- 1:41Speaker 3: baseball fan myself, that it's taken in what and he's
- 1:44Speaker 3: been in professional baseball like forty seven years or something. Yeah,
- 1:46Speaker 3: I heard that it's taken him that long to reach
- 1:49Speaker 3: a World Series. It's crazy and it's honestly about time
- 1:51Speaker 3: he gets a ring.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Well. And the other thing about don Donny Baseball is
- 1:54Speaker 1: I've gotten is talked to him multiple times in the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yankees world, and of course actually as a marl manager.
- 2:00Speaker 1: The week the week that Jeter came on board with
- 2:04Speaker 1: the Marlins and they also got rid of John Carlow,
- 2:06Speaker 1: it was a crazy week and and I talked to
- 2:09Speaker 1: him in the city field. Dugout and Donnie Baseball say
- 2:14Speaker 1: something like, isn't baseball crazy like that? I said, yes,
- 2:16Speaker 1: it is so. And I've been directed with before over
- 2:18Speaker 1: the last couple of years. So I want to see
- 2:20Speaker 1: him get his ring. And I'm gonna go against the
- 2:23Speaker 1: great and say, the Blue Jays it's their year. And
- 2:25Speaker 1: if you're the Yankees, and I think you'd feel this way, Ryan,
- 2:28Speaker 1: why didn't you want to lose the champion?
- 2:30Speaker 2: Anyway? I feel like that would.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Just complete the circle, because look, the Blue Jays really
- 2:34Speaker 1: didn't do anything wrong. It was Devin Williams's nine horrible games,
- 2:38Speaker 1: some of them against the Blue Jays, that enabled Toronto
- 2:41Speaker 1: to get to where they're at in the World Series.
- 2:44Speaker 1: You cannot say anything different. So to beat to lose
- 2:47Speaker 1: the champion, there is some solace in that.
- 2:50Speaker 3: No, there definitely is. And I mean he slick at
- 2:52Speaker 3: twenty eighteen. I know, a slightly different circumstance with your
- 2:57Speaker 3: most hated rival in the Red Sox, but you know
- 2:59Speaker 3: they fell in games that year in twenty eighteen, and
- 3:02Speaker 3: look what the Red Sox did best team in baseball
- 3:05Speaker 3: by record that year ended up winning the World Series.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And I know there were a lot of Yankee fans
- 3:10Speaker 3: that hated a him for good reason, So not to
- 3:13Speaker 3: fault to any of them for wanting to hate on
- 3:15Speaker 3: it this year, because yeah, the Blue Jays are another
- 3:17Speaker 3: hated division rival. It's just they have a ton of
- 3:21Speaker 3: talent on their side too. And I mean, regardless of
- 3:25Speaker 3: how that Wildcard series was gonna shake out this year,
- 3:29Speaker 3: whether it was the Yanks the Red Sox moving on
- 3:32Speaker 3: either way, it's not like and I hate to say
- 3:35Speaker 3: it like this, but it's not that they would.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Have had much chance exactly so for Donny Baseball to
- 3:41Speaker 1: get his moment right now and again an alcant I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you ever remember and besides the coaching thirty years ago
- 3:47Speaker 1: he slammed the turf at Toronto when the Yanks clinched
- 3:51Speaker 1: the wildcard. Thirty years later, you know, Gary Thorn had
- 3:55Speaker 1: that hang on to the roof call against the Mariners
- 3:57Speaker 1: and of course the Yanks get knocked out by the
- 3:59Speaker 1: Mariners ninety five. Well, Donnie Baseball as a coach gets
- 4:02Speaker 1: his revenge, I guess, knocking out the Mariners thirty years
- 4:05Speaker 1: later to go to the World series, but literally, from
- 4:07Speaker 1: hang on to the roof to under the roof at
- 4:09Speaker 1: Rogers Center, there's still baseball to be played. And by
- 4:13Speaker 1: the way, if Garthorne was calling the game last night,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I would say that too.
- 4:16Speaker 2: That roof was shaking last night.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Absolutely, But something else I want to add on here, Alex.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You bring up Donnie Baseballs for venge ark knocking out
- 4:25Speaker 3: the same franchise that basically ended his playing career thirty
- 4:29Speaker 3: years ago. And can we just acknowledge real quick the
- 4:32Speaker 3: fact that he not only knocked out the Mariners, but
- 4:35Speaker 3: he also knocked out their skipper who just so happened
- 4:38Speaker 3: to be the starting catcher on that same ninety five
- 4:41Speaker 3: Mariner team, Dan Wilson, Right.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And of course Tino Martinez was congratulating and giving his
- 4:47Speaker 1: wishes to cal Rally, and that's a guy I feel
- 4:50Speaker 1: bad for. But you look at cal rally sixty five homers.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I mean, what a record season he's had.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He had, Yeah, what a record season. And really the
- 4:58Speaker 3: only question now was whether or not he's gonna come
- 5:01Speaker 3: away with the al MVP. A lot of Yankee fans
- 5:03Speaker 3: saying it should be judged personally. I think it should
- 5:05Speaker 3: be judge I just believe he's had the better season personally.
- 5:09Speaker 3: But I very well can see the argument for cal Rawley.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I mean, he's had a history, he is, but.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 5:15Speaker 3: He's the MVP, as he's for a catcher too.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You never love Aaron, but he's the MVP, all right.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I do want to get to this call. And by
- 5:21Speaker 1: the way, Justin Time Baseball is sponsoring the show. One
- 5:24Speaker 1: look up, Alex Sports. Gotta give him a credit here
- 5:27Speaker 1: for continually partnering with us. And here's the Justin Time
- 5:30Speaker 1: player of the game and really call of the game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And I don't want the Fox guys. I don't want
- 5:35Speaker 1: any radio guys. I want the Dan Schulman to take
- 5:39Speaker 1: you inside Rogers Center for that big three run homer
- 5:42Speaker 1: by George.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Exactly the part of the line you want in a
- 5:47Speaker 4: situation like this.
- 5:52Speaker 1: The left field doctors holda.
- 5:55Speaker 2: She's well, Dan Schrulman with the call and never missing.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I kind of liked that he's still going in October
- 6:10Speaker 1: into yeah, into November, it feels like. And then, of
- 6:13Speaker 1: course Don Mattingly and Mark de Boorier, a lifelong Yankee fan.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You remember watching Donnie play.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yes, I do, especially in the ninety five Division Series
- 6:25Speaker 4: against Seattle, and that was a wonderful series. But of
- 6:30Speaker 4: course the Yankees won the first two home games and
- 6:34Speaker 4: then went to Seattle and lost three games in a row.
- 6:37Speaker 4: We won't go there, but that was Mattingly's last year
- 6:41Speaker 4: playing as a first baseman. But congrats to the Blue
- 6:46Speaker 4: Jays because they're going to the World Series.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Now, would you rather lose to the champion?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I feel like I'd want to see the champ them
- 6:51Speaker 1: become champion.
- 6:52Speaker 4: After knock You know, it's been a long time since
- 6:55Speaker 4: the Blue Jays won the World Series three the early nineties,
- 7:01Speaker 4: I was gonna say, and then they had the strike year,
- 7:04Speaker 4: so they held the crown for another year. Anyway, I
- 7:11Speaker 4: would like to see the Blue Jays win, even though
- 7:13Speaker 4: they knocked the Yankees out.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And I do that.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I do too because the Dodgers just embarrassed the Yanks
- 7:18Speaker 1: last year. How can you root for that team to
- 7:20Speaker 1: win a back to back I just can't do it.
- 7:22Speaker 4: So Donnie Baseball, let's let's hear it for him.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Forty seven years in baseball and finally getting a chance
- 7:28Speaker 1: against the world pretty amazing. Well again, this episode sponsored
- 7:32Speaker 1: by justin Time Baseball always appreciate their partnership, and Justin
- 7:36Speaker 1: wanted me to let you know there's a lot of
- 7:38Speaker 1: fall stuff going on because baseball never stops.
- 7:40Speaker 2: You got fall ball, spring ball, winter ball, there's always
- 7:43Speaker 2: stuff going on.
- 7:43Speaker 4: A World Baseball and.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Then we're gearing up for World Baseball Classic the Captain
- 7:47Speaker 1: ninety nine.
- 7:48Speaker 3: That should be torture for me as a Mets fan.
- 7:52Speaker 2: It's gonna be crazy. So there you go. And then
- 7:54Speaker 2: I want to get your thoughts.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Email me Alex at alex GNYC dot com. Where do
- 7:59Speaker 1: you stand your inky fan that's rumored the J's or Dodgers.
- 8:02Speaker 1: A lot of people may not even watch the series,
- 8:04Speaker 1: which I find a disgrace.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I watched the World Series.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It's nothing like it.
- 8:07Speaker 2: In my opinion. So we'll see what happens.
- 8:10Speaker 1: One they got, Alex, congrats to Donnie Baseball, Congrats to
- 8:13Speaker 1: the Blue Jays. And I never thought I'd say go
- 8:15Speaker 1: Blue Jays, but here we go.
