Transcript
- 0:00Dayna Roselli: It is time for episode 66 of Vegas Revealed.
- 0:04Dayna Roselli: We sit down with Mayor Carolyn Goodman and talk everything downtown Las Vegas now that we're getting back to business.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: We never wanted to close, but the reality is you can feel the excitement and the energy in everybody that comes into town, or anybody that lives here that's coming back into town.
- 0:23Sean McAllister: And yes, she talks about that Anderson Cooper interview on CNN.
- 0:28Sean McAllister: He owes me an apology.
- 0:30Sean McAllister: And in our exclusive poll of the week, we ask you your favorite spots in downtown when you visit, or even if you live here.
- 0:38Dayna Roselli: Plus, the show and concert announcements, boy, they keep coming and rolling in.
- 0:43Dayna Roselli: And Las Vegas takes in more than a billion dollars in gaming revenue in March.
- 0:48Sean McAllister: I think it's a good time to spin that wheel.
- 0:50Dayna Roselli: Spin it.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Let's go night.
- 1:04Sean McAllister: Welcome to Vegas Revealed episode 66.
- 1:07Sean McAllister: Uh Sean McAllister along here with Dana Roselli.
- 1:10Sean McAllister: And Dana, I think people have been listening to the theme song of our Vegas Revealed podcast and really following that advice.
- 1:17Sean McAllister: Let's go to Vegas, baby.
- 1:19Dayna Roselli: Seriously.
- 1:20Dayna Roselli: I mean, Vegas has been getting busier and busier, and then we got some gaming numbers in this week saying that March gaming revenue hit$1.1 billion, which is huge.
- 1:31Sean McAllister: That's incredible.
- 1:32Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 1:33Dayna Roselli: I mean, people have been enjoying, I guess, gambling.
- 1:36Dayna Roselli: Um, you know, obviously that was a time period where we had what the March Madness and we had NASCAR in town and all sorts of different kinds of sporting events that probably fared very well for the sports books.
- 1:47Sean McAllister: Right.
- 1:47Sean McAllister: And so that's obviously a good thing.
- 1:50Sean McAllister: But taking a look at the bigger picture, gaming revenue has been dropping year after year after year.
- 1:57Sean McAllister: Las Vegas hasn't been depending on gaming revenue because there's restaurants, there's retail, there's the entertainment that have been, you know, kind of high-dollar, high-ticket items.
- 2:09Sean McAllister: So as the gaming has tapered off, they've been making up revenue in other places.
- 2:15Sean McAllister: But as dining has been limited, as entertainment was on hold, as shops were still just being opened again, everybody came to town and they were like, well, I guess we'll gamble.
- 2:28Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I know.
- 2:29Dayna Roselli: Or, you know, they there are a lot, I guess, a lot of people that stayed working and didn't spend as much this year, so they might have some money put aside and ready to spend it.
- 2:39Dayna Roselli: That could be it as well.
- 2:40Dayna Roselli: I mean, we don't know.
- 2:41Dayna Roselli: There's a number of different factors.
- 2:43Dayna Roselli: But you and I interviewed the President of Resorts World last week on episode 65, and he was saying that it's not all about, you know, casinos and gaming anymore.
- 2:53Dayna Roselli: Yes, that's a huge part of it, but they do depend on entertainment and nightclubs and things like that to bring in revenue.
- 3:00Dayna Roselli: So if you didn't uh listen to that interview, make sure you listen to episode 65.
- 3:04Dayna Roselli: Really interesting, but it's interesting because that's you know what people I remember even Steve Wynne saying that, you know, for years.
- 3:11Sean McAllister: Oh yeah, and casinos have had to find, you know, new ways and entice people to their properties in you know, all new creative ways.
- 3:20Sean McAllister: So but the one armed bandit seems to be winning.
- 3:23Dayna Roselli: Yeah, so we'll take it.
- 3:24Dayna Roselli: 1.1 billion, and there's so many articles out there, and especially in business publications right now that are saying, you know, Las Vegas is bouncing back and we're bouncing back quick.
- 3:32Dayna Roselli: So hallelujah! And speaking of that, literally every day this week I've woken up to a number, not just one, a number of new concert and entertainment show announcements.
- 3:43Sean McAllister: I know it's been so nice to see these things filling our inboxes.
- 3:47Sean McAllister: Like, hey, today a show's being announced.
- 3:49Sean McAllister: Hey, today tickets are going on sale.
- 3:52Sean McAllister: Uh among the Las Vegas entertainers who are returning to the stage.
- 3:57Sean McAllister: I'm excited about this one.
- 3:58Sean McAllister: Carlos Santana is back at the House of Blues.
- 4:02Sean McAllister: He's returning to that stage where he's been performing for so many years now over at Mandalay Bay.
- 4:09Sean McAllister: And Carlos Santana is one of those musicians who's really become a part of the Las Vegas entertainment scene.
- 4:17Sean McAllister: He's a staple.
- 4:18Dayna Roselli: Yeah, he is.
- 4:18Dayna Roselli: And he he sent a little video message.
- 4:20Dayna Roselli: You can watch it on our Vegas revealed Instagram and Twitter if you're interested to see that.
- 4:25Dayna Roselli: But you could tell he's just, he's like, we want to welcome you back and we're ready.
- 4:29Dayna Roselli: So yeah, Santana returns.
- 4:31Dayna Roselli: Mark Anthony's tour is stopping here as well.
- 4:34Dayna Roselli: And Bruno Mars announced he's going to be performing at Park MGM, kicking off July 4th weekend, and then a number of dates through July, which I feel like was huge because, you know, he's got new song out now, and everyone's excited that he'll be doing shows actually live and in person, and so soon, right around the corner in July.
- 4:53Sean McAllister: And those Bruno Mars tickets are some of the hardest tickets to get a hold of because his shows have been selling out almost instantly before the shutdown happened.
- 5:06Sean McAllister: So if you can get a hold of those tickets, make sure you get them now because they will not be sticking around.
- 5:12Sean McAllister: Another Las Vegas headliner that's headed back to the stage is Terry Fader, who had ended his run of shows over at the Mirage.
- 5:21Sean McAllister: He's now going to be performing at New York, New York.
- 5:24Dayna Roselli: Yeah, so congratulations to Terry.
- 5:26Dayna Roselli: He'll be back on stage.
- 5:27Dayna Roselli: The the puppets are ready.
- 5:29Dayna Roselli: They are.
- 5:30Dayna Roselli: They've been resting up.
- 5:31Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 5:31Dayna Roselli: I saw um, what's her name?
- 5:32Dayna Roselli: Vicki.
- 5:33Dayna Roselli: Vicki is getting ready to return.
- 5:34Dayna Roselli: Oh, Vicky the Cougar.
- 5:35Sean McAllister: Yeah, she's getting ready to return.
- 5:37Dayna Roselli: And then also there is that's right, Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan, who are coming to MGM Grand Garden Arena.
- 5:46Dayna Roselli: And they're gonna be there July 9th.
- 5:48Dayna Roselli: So that's interesting.
- 5:49Dayna Roselli: Yeah, that'll be a good combo, and I think a lot of people will enjoy seeing them in person.
- 5:52Sean McAllister: Well, and Joe Rogan's been in the headlines lately with you know his his take on vaccines, public health matters, yeah.
- 6:00Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 6:01Sean McAllister: But clearly on the poster that was put out for this uh engagement with Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan, it says masks required at all times in bold font.
- 6:14Sean McAllister: So you've been warned.
- 6:16Dayna Roselli: And then there's of course Cinco de Mayo, which is always a great time in Las Vegas because all our fabulous restaurants do special, you know, things, special menus and margarita deals and the whole nine.
- 6:27Sean McAllister: Entertainment is back in Las Vegas, and tickets for just about everything that we mentioned, plus everything that we've mentioned before, are on sale right now.
- 6:36Sean McAllister: So you can go to Ticketmaster, uh, AXS, anywhere that you get tickets.
- 6:41Sean McAllister: Just do a Google search for whatever you want to see and Las Vegas and your tickets will come up.
- 6:46Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's gonna be pretty easy to find.
- 6:48Dayna Roselli: And also we heard that CES is gonna be returning in 2022.
- 6:53Dayna Roselli: That's always good news when we hear a convention of that size is ready to return.
- 6:58Dayna Roselli: They're gonna be doing in-person convention, but they're gonna make uh certain things optional to watch online too.
- 7:03Dayna Roselli: So, you know, that's kind of what this world has turned to now, which is options for both.
- 7:09Sean McAllister: Well, and I think that that's gonna work out really well because people who want to travel and be here to have that in-person experience are still going to do it because there really isn't anything that that will replace in-person conventions in that convention business.
- 7:26Sean McAllister: But having an option for people who might not either be able to afford to travel or make arrangements to travel given their situation at home, or you know, there's any number of reasons why people can't go to any given convention.
- 7:43Sean McAllister: So having virtual options, I think, is only going to grow the base of people who are able to take part.
- 7:50Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and you know, uh if you get tickets or I don't know, your business gets tickets or anything like that, I mean it could be a nice revenue maker, too, because more options for people.
- 7:59Sean McAllister: Absolutely.
- 8:00Dayna Roselli: And then also the world of concrete's coming, I think, in June.
- 8:02Dayna Roselli: We've talked about that before, but I think that I saw they're gonna debut the loop, the Elon Musk loop during that.
- 8:08Dayna Roselli: So that'll be exciting.
- 8:09Sean McAllister: Yeah, so those will be the first bunch of convention goers who are gonna get to ride those Tesla cars, which I understand, even though they are autonomous vehicles that don't need a driver, as they launch this, you know, underground tunnel system, there will be a driver in the seats, at least initially, to make sure there's no funny business going on with that technology.
- 8:34Dayna Roselli: It's always better when they start off with that, a little bit more comfortable.
- 8:38Dayna Roselli: Um, we have our poll of the week that focuses on downtown and chose downtown because we interview Mayor Carolyn Goodman coming up.
- 8:47Dayna Roselli: We sat down with her, we went right to City Hall and had a nice chat with Carolyn.
- 8:51Dayna Roselli: We talked downtown, we talk uh the last year with the reopening.
- 8:56Sean McAllister: Her uh very now well publicized appearance on CNN's uh Anderson Cooper 360, where uh she and Anderson talked at quite some length.
- 9:07Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and that's all coming up, but let's get to our poll of the week.
- 9:11Dayna Roselli: Roll that theme song.
- 9:14Sean McAllister: We asked, and you have responded to our exclusive Vegas Revealed Weekly Poll.
- 9:25Sean McAllister: Alright, so we asked when you visit Las Vegas, which downtown spots do you hit first and why?
- 9:33Sean McAllister: And if you're a local, when you go downtown, what are your favorite places and why?
- 9:38Sean McAllister: And we got some good answers to this, Dana.
- 9:40Dayna Roselli: We sure did, and we did get a mix of people, some that live here and some that like to visit here, uh, chiming in.
- 9:46Dayna Roselli: So we had Barry underscore Vegas lover, say Fremont Street.
- 9:51Dayna Roselli: Then we begin exploring the downtown hotels.
- 9:54Dayna Roselli: We try to pick out dinner with either steak or seafood on the menu.
- 9:58Dayna Roselli: So she's getting very specific.
- 9:59Dayna Roselli: Then we gamble with our favorite drinks in our hands.
- 10:01Dayna Roselli: Downtown has grown so much since our first visit in the 1980s, so they just really seem like they love downtown as a whole and they like to hop from different places along Fremont Street.
- 10:13Sean McAllister: The downtown area really has changed a ton since the 1980s, and even in the past three, four, five years, there's been a huge transformation.
- 10:23Sean McAllister: So making a point to get downtown really should be a part of your agenda next time that you come to Las Vegas.
- 10:30Sean McAllister: Uh Brian says La Thai, which I agree.
- 10:33Sean McAllister: Amazing food.
- 10:34Sean McAllister: The lines aren't as long as other amazing Thai places in town.
- 10:38Sean McAllister: Plus, it's just walking distance from Container Park.
- 10:42Sean McAllister: So Brian says that he can burn off a few calories that he just ate.
- 10:46Dayna Roselli: I love that.
- 10:47Dayna Roselli: All right, Boondoc says, I love these Twitter names.
- 10:51Dayna Roselli: Uh, we visit Vegas very often, about every three weeks.
- 10:54Dayna Roselli: Wow.
- 10:55Sean McAllister: That's like how often I get my hair cut.
- 10:57Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 10:58Dayna Roselli: And have only started visiting downtown since Circa opened in late 2020.
- 11:03Dayna Roselli: So um they say that they visit almost every trip now.
- 11:06Dayna Roselli: So now they go downtown and now they hit up circa.
- 11:09Sean McAllister: Well, there's even if you step outside of the circa footprint, you're gonna find new restaurants, new breweries, lots of stuff that you're going to uh hear the mayor talking about here in just a few minutes on Vegas Revealed.
- 11:22Sean McAllister: Uh Philloween says that the Gardens Drag Brunch is always so fun, and that is where it's at with a dancing lady.
- 11:33Dayna Roselli: Phillowin Thrills.
- 11:34Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I know Phil.
- 11:36Dayna Roselli: He says um that he loves it there and he is a local, just so you know.
- 11:39Dayna Roselli: So he's not a visitor.
- 11:40Dayna Roselli: He lives here in Las Vegas and he goes over to the Gardens Drag Brunch.
- 11:44Dayna Roselli: And then John Lenz chimed in.
- 11:46Dayna Roselli: He says, I'm a local and I love to hit the Cornish Patsy Company.
- 11:50Dayna Roselli: So I had to look this up because you and I were going, did he mean to write pastry?
- 11:54Dayna Roselli: No, it's P-A-S-T-Y.
- 11:57Dayna Roselli: Pasty?
- 11:58Dayna Roselli: I don't know.
- 11:59Dayna Roselli: But it's a British restaurant.
- 12:01Dayna Roselli: So I'll have to ask my British friends.
- 12:03Dayna Roselli: But yeah, he says that he loves it there.
- 12:05Dayna Roselli: And so now I know where it is.
- 12:06Dayna Roselli: 10 East Charleston Boulevard, and I'm gonna have to go check it out.
- 12:09Sean McAllister: Yeah, one of the great spots downtown.
- 12:11Sean McAllister: I love it.
- 12:12Sean McAllister: Uh and then we continue on with uh Ryan, who says Pizza Rock is great.
- 12:18Sean McAllister: That's down on Fourth Street, uh down by downtown Grand and the Mob Museum.
- 12:24Sean McAllister: It's right at the corner there.
- 12:25Sean McAllister: And then Cindy Reed says she loves the arts district and everything that's happening on Main Street.
- 12:32Dayna Roselli: Love that.
- 12:32Dayna Roselli: And then Tracy J chimed in and she says, Does the mob museum count?
- 12:38Dayna Roselli: She says, I love taking guests to the mob museum.
- 12:40Dayna Roselli: She loves the history and they've been doing a great job with it.
- 12:43Dayna Roselli: She says, I miss the movies and TV show displays at the end, though.
- 12:46Dayna Roselli: The courtroom might be my favorite part.
- 12:48Dayna Roselli: So yeah, the mob museum definitely counts.
- 12:50Dayna Roselli: It's a great, great museum in downtown.
- 12:53Sean McAllister: And it's a museum that uh is housed in the building that used to be our uh federal courthouse here in Las Vegas, where all those famous mob trials happened back in the 70s and 80s.
- 13:05Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's a really, really cool museum.
- 13:07Dayna Roselli: Um, Evil Pie was also on the list for realistic Vegas.
- 13:11Dayna Roselli: So thank you everyone for chiming in.
- 13:13Dayna Roselli: That was a good poll this week.
- 13:14Dayna Roselli: It really is.
- 13:15Sean McAllister: We even learned of a new place.
- 13:17Sean McAllister: And we're gonna be talking about even more downtown Las Vegas hotspots, you know, not only restaurants, but attractions as well, uh, coming up in our tips in just a little bit.
- 13:28Sean McAllister: But first, we're getting into all of that with the mayor of Las Vegas, Carolyn Goodman.
- 13:34Dayna Roselli: And we've had, you know, former mayor Oscar Goodman here on Vegas revealed before.
- 13:39Dayna Roselli: He was like our, maybe even like our fourth or fifth guest, I believe.
- 13:43Sean McAllister: It was early on.
- 13:44Sean McAllister: You can look back in our uh season one episodes and you'll see Oscar Goodman in there, the mob mayor.
- 13:51Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 13:51Dayna Roselli: Well, you know, when his term was up, he couldn't run anymore.
- 13:55Dayna Roselli: Carolyn Goodman, his wife, ran for mayor, and she's been in that spot ever since.
- 14:00Dayna Roselli: And, you know, she's always just as animated as Oscar, and we thought, you know what, we haven't visited with Carolyn in a while.
- 14:06Dayna Roselli: The mayor, let's let's see if she's up for it.
- 14:08Dayna Roselli: And she was, and she said, come down to City Hall.
- 14:11Dayna Roselli: Don't even we're not zooming.
- 14:13Dayna Roselli: You I want you in the room.
- 14:16Sean McAllister: So we've made our way down to City Hall and sitting down face to face for the first time in a long time with Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman.
- 14:27Sean McAllister: It's good to see you, Mayor.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Hi, Sean.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Dana, this is such fun.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I love it because I have the best view.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: You're looking at me, which my husband only has to do, but I get to see Las Vegas downtown.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful out there.
- 14:42Dayna Roselli: And people are moving around and doing things.
- 14:45Dayna Roselli: I just went to the Greek restaurant that you posted on Twitter yesterday.
- 14:49Dayna Roselli: Good for you.
- 14:50Dayna Roselli: Because I love Greek and I thought I'm on my way to City Hall, but things are opening, new businesses are opening.
- 14:56Dayna Roselli: I know this has to feel good and something that you've wanted all year long.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: But of course, we never wanted to close, but the reality is you can feel the excitement and the energy in everybody that comes into town, or anybody that lives here that's coming back into town.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: We were the first people yesterday at 11:45 at the new Great Greek that's in downtown, where the old site of the old Western Cab Company was.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: And as we were sitting there all by ourselves, I took my staff from the office.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: All of a sudden, it was like somebody opened the doors and the crowds just fabulous food.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: But I couldn't believe the numbers of people.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: It was busy today.
- 15:41Sean McAllister: Well, and and how does that make you feel to finally know?
- 15:44Sean McAllister: I know your state of the city at the beginning of the year.
- 15:47Sean McAllister: You said Las Vegas is ready to welcome the world back.
- 15:50Sean McAllister: And now that we can actually do that, what does that make you feel like?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm just bursting with pride.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: I hate to sleep.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: I always tell groups of people when I am uh given that opportunity to guest speak or do something.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Boring.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Sleep is so stupid and boring.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: And five hours, I'm ready to come back and do this.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: For anybody that's interested, I am termed out at 2024.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: It's the best job in the world.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, look at that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Applications being accepted.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Think about it.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: But it is.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, the people that are here, and I'm so proud of this community because, you know, there have been such troubles around the country to say nothing around the world, to say nothing of COVID.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: But we are a family of people.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: People who choose to live here, choose to do that because they want to wake up in the morning and feeling not people have to admire or look at me.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: I want to do something so I feel better.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: And I don't care who your community is.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: We're in this, all of us as one people, not separate parts, which is what's happening around the country, and just drives me nuts.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: But the excitement and the energy of all these people, let me in.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Just let me let me have a good time.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:10Sean McAllister: Well, and there is, there's so much excitement, and there's so much, there's so many new things in downtown Las Vegas to talk about, and I want to get to that, but but since we are talking about everything that's happened over the course of the past year, do you feel like your views on on how we should reopen and all that, do you ever feel like you were mischaracterized or unfairly treated?
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Well, I do think that wonderful interview with uh Anderson Cooper was fabulous for me.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: You're the one saying you'll all be fine.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: What we're saying is testing and contact.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: You're putting words in my mouth.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I said, open up Las Vegas.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Let us get started and go back to the next one.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: What is May?
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: What as mayor, what are you doing to encourage even feed their families or take care of their families?
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I get I get the pain that's out there, and it's real, and I'm not minimizing that at all.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Here I am looking at a cell phone being video camerad into his show.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: He's on his on the big screen.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: I can't see his motions, I can't see his facial expressions and all his props.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: And uh he owes me an apology.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: You better believe it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think right from day one, I knew, unfortunately, because my background and everything I've ever studied, that this was one of those scenes, having lived through the polio epidemic, having lived through West Nile, having lived through all of these scenes, and having a medical family and ha having studied science and other things, um, the reality was that wow, this is something very, very different.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And so, from my perspective, I think people would have figured it out themselves, and not that the masks are bad or distant separation.
- 19:11Dayna Roselli: You deserve the right to be able to give the answer.
- 19:15Dayna Roselli: I always say that, to be able to speak your mind, whatever it may be, if people agree or they don't agree.
- 19:19Dayna Roselli: When I watched the interview, I wanted to hear your answers.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Well, and I did too.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, even after, and we started to get a lot of comments coming into the mayor's office for a while.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: But the reality was I wasn't given, I'm big on courtesy.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Good manners, courtesy, respect for others.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: And so therefore, um I thought it was very disrespectful and unkind, but that's okay, but disrespectful and not allowing an individual who you have asked to con, I was told it was a three to five-minute interview, it turned into one of the longest interviews he's ever given.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And I mean, I just thought, oh my gosh.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And now, though, if he would just give me a call and say, you know, I apologize.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: It was rude.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: I did it in an improper way.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Would you come back on?
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And I know my public information officer, guru, who sits next to me all the time, would say, Don't you dare.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And I would say, get me on that show right away.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Now, we know you would say that.
- 20:28Dayna Roselli: And you know, that's the reason a lot of people love you here because you're a voice and you've you and your husband have always spoken up.
- 20:34Dayna Roselli: You know, when you say what's on your mind and you don't filter it, and there there is a lot to be said about that.
- 20:40Dayna Roselli: And and look, here we are today, and we're open.
- 20:42Dayna Roselli: Nice, right?
- 20:43Dayna Roselli: We're opening.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: But look at the loss.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: That's the hard thing.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, we are very definitely always an optimistic family.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Everything, and that's why we've been married 59 years.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: We have a very center core that's identical.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Where he's crazy, I'm not.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: He thinks he's perfect, I know I'm not.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: I have a very large door at the front of the house so he can get his head in for me.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: And I just but I do clap for him every morning when he gets out of bed, you know, so he feels loved.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: But 59 years together, that's pretty darn good.
- 21:16Sean McAllister: Congratulations.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Right, thank you.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: And I deserve the applause.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: But the reality is truth, good communication and truth, people don't hear it.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: They're hearing what somebody or some group wants them to hear.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: We need to go back to the days where you have facts presented or you have two calm people who aren't closed, who are open-minded, sharing information to help each individual make choices for himself.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: And I think through Oscar's 12 years as mayor, and certainly through these 10 so far of mine, uh, we're very Much and I and I love the balance of my city council.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Aside from the fact they're each wonderful individuals, they each have their own passions and their own points of view.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: And so to have them sharing it, many times we'll go in and I'll hear that there's been proselytizing on the floor to promote something, one thing or another.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: And when we get down there, and because of the balance, and because what I believe in, since I run the meeting, that dialogue will change people's viewpoint on something.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: And to me, that's where it needs to be.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And that's what children today are missing.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: They're not getting to see that.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: What what they're inheriting from the anger and lack of fact and lack of being able to give parents.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: I used to, I was involved with a school, and I always used to go to the elementary school to ask the children, how many of you are for this person?
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: And immediately, you know, where do they get it from?
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Whatever their parents are doing.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: So I would know what the vote was gonna be on an issue.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: And so I think those, you know, those points are are so worthwhile in this day now.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but we are back, and they're all that's what the commonality has been.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:21Sean McAllister: And so much new is going on.
- 23:24Sean McAllister: I want to start with the neighbor that you have over here at the ground floor of the plaza parking garage, the Greyhound station, is out opening up a new opportunity for Jonathan Jostle over there to put in something new.
- 23:40Sean McAllister: Yes.
- 23:41Sean McAllister: So what are what are your thoughts about the development of that space and what it could do for that Fremont and Main Street area?
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: The hope is that anybody with an idea that really has some credibility will send it into the plaza's CEO to Jonathan Jostle.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Because I think this is that is wonderful right now of the brain power of our constituents.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: We have some great, great ideas coming from our grassroots.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: But with this happening and the opportunity he has here, and I don't know what he's doing, but we one of the things that Jonathan said was we are going to grant you the easement to connect Symphony Park with our wonderful Smith Center, our phenomenal world um world furniture mart that opened up the Expo, which is a convention center, and the Ruvo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic for Brain Health, and all the stuff we're doing.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Now we're gonna have a vehicular, pedestrian, and biking bridge connecting the two.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 24:50Dayna Roselli: I mean, it's so good.
- 24:51Dayna Roselli: And the other day I was, I think I was on Main Street south of Charlie, and it was so busy and bustling, and things are opening.
- 24:58Dayna Roselli: I know this is the vision that that you have seen for a very long time.
- 25:01Dayna Roselli: We've got circa built from the ground up.
- 25:03Dayna Roselli: This is brave.
- 25:04Dayna Roselli: Oh my god, all this stuff happening.
- 25:06Dayna Roselli: And uh I think you know, we have people that listen to the podcast that really love Las Vegas and they love to know what's going on here when I do visit, when I, you know, can get the chance to visit.
- 25:18Dayna Roselli: Um, should I should I hit downtown?
- 25:19Dayna Roselli: And I always say yes.
- 25:21Dayna Roselli: And then you what's your plea?
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, all I can tell you, Dana, the exciting piece of it is we're hearing more and more often, I'm coming into Vegas.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Yes, I love the great entertainment, but I want to get down where everything is shoulder to shoulder, one place after another, close by.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: So if in fact I've gone into this little restaurant on Main Street or into the arts district or to restaurant row, or now we have brewery row.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Boy, which is busy too, yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Um I I want the action of everything being close.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: And so the energy to come down here, where life is old Vegas in a sense, the cost of going to these little restaurants or these art galleries on Main Street, you said from Main Street from uh Charleston, both directions is really come alive with the feelings of down in the Bowery in New York or in uh Soho, anywhere that you get excitement, culture, young and old people, it's age, there are no barriers, and yet there you just feel, and people are so nice and so polite.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's none of this anger.
- 26:38Dayna Roselli: It's a different you're right.
- 26:39Dayna Roselli: And it and I it was a Tuesday night I was down, and it I it took me a while to find a spot.
- 26:43Dayna Roselli: I mean, it was busy, and I thought, wow, people are out there enjoying, and this does, it looks different and it feels different.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Well, and I hope you would come down, and you've been here long enough for first Friday.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Now that the um restrictions are moving back and we're more uh able to move freely from place to place, that um you would come down on a first Friday to enjoy that, which can go on, and that's the best part of Vegas, as we all know.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: We're 24-7.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And so you want to get out and party.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: They're still up having a party at two o'clock in the morning on Main Street.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: And so these, and as you mentioned, circa.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, what a brave thing to do in the heart of this uh pandemic to go ahead and build that out.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Woo! Yeah fabulous.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Derek and Greg see fabulous, and yet to sustain the energy without we did have to close the Smith Center because of the you know the restrictions, but we're back.
- 27:45Sean McAllister: Yeah, yes, we're back.
- 27:46Sean McAllister: And so I I'm I'm glad that you mentioned restaurant row and brewery row because those are some great new additions.
- 27:54Sean McAllister: But looking to the future of development downtown, do you see like the the knock it down, build-it-up kind of mentality that we've seen down on the strip, or or do you think it's important to preserve the feel that makes it downtown Las Vegas?
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Well, I think you've hit two really important parts right there.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: On one side, as you know, when Tony Shea, who we lost, you know, um came into downtown, he began buying up property.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: And because a lot of the property was old and in bad condition, uh he flattened it, he raised it.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: But there there's also this effort that our former head city attorney Brad Gerbett got involved in called Project Enchilada.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: And that came about because when Oscar became mayor in '99, downtown Las Vegas had grown into the most dilapidated, dangerous, horrible, boarded up, depressing place to try to have a business or even live in one of the houses or an apartment.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: And so his passion at that time was to be bring us back, don't get don't let it get lost.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Save mid-century architecture, save those neon signs, and let's try to rebuild.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: And that was his whole focus of those 12 years.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: And so we're caught right now because we have streetscaped, which means we've widened our sidewalks, we've put in retro lighting better, excuse me, and put trees in and trying to hold on to what was.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: So we do have a lot of vacant land that's come up because as Tony Shea did pass away, there are those pieces.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: But I think really we are about preservation.
- 29:55Dayna Roselli: Well, when you mentioned conventions too, I saw CES is coming back, and I know down in that area, but thank heavens, right?
- 30:01Dayna Roselli: Because we need those people, because those people, when they're not at the convention, are enjoying downtown.
- 30:06Dayna Roselli: So um it's exciting to hear some of those conventions coming back, and I know that's really, really what we need.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: Well, there's so much there because our sales tax supports so much, property tax too, but with the economy so impacted by COVID, um, everything we're doing is a manner and a way to help publicly supported things, the infrastructure sustain itself.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: And so we're working on that.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: There's so many things that couple in with this energy to make it an attractive place to come down and go to the restaurant, find a parking spot, and yet be able not just come in and eat at the restaurant, but then feel wonderful about walking around or going in and checking out antiques or auction things and art galleries.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: And so it's we're becoming uh a really cultural center.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: That's what's so exciting about being alive today.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: How do you know it's coming tomorrow?
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 31:07Dayna Roselli: And mayor, I know you're a big fan of the Chippendales.
- 31:09Dayna Roselli: You must miss the chips.
- 31:11Dayna Roselli: Are you missing the chips?
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: They're gonna come back.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Are those the greatest guys?
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, because you know, when Oscar was mayor and even when he was working with the convention authority, he had the best looking showgirls.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: And so when it came time that I had the good fortune to become mayor, wow.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, I love those showgirls, but my guys are pretty dark.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: They are.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: I'm not but they went back to Australia, a whole group of them.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: So I'm waiting for them to come back to the new bunch.
- 31:50Sean McAllister: And uh you talk about the future, and uh looking 50, even a hundred years in the future, as people look at this Goodman era, Mayor Oscar Goodman, followed by Mayor Carolyn Goodman.
- 32:04Sean McAllister: What do you hope that that people associate with the Goodman name?
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: The only thing I would love for them to say is boy, they really loved each other, they loved the community, they loved their family, and they had a good time.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: And we did.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: We had the best.
- 32:22Dayna Roselli: We know that.
- 32:23Dayna Roselli: You guys have a great time.
- 32:24Dayna Roselli: And it, you know, and you're here till 2024 as mayor, but it'll be hard for you probably to step back.
- 32:29Dayna Roselli: It's gonna be difficult to step back.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: I was thinking, why don't they do a stop telling me to run for governor?
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Put her right in and give her till she dies.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: But I have to tell you, when Oscar was 12 years in, and then he swore me in as the first spouse swearing in a successive spouse in anything, I think maybe except for Evita and Juan Perone.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Um I thought, okay, and is uh I just adore him, you know that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: And but yet we're very competitive.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: So there's a love affair, but this is a real competition.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: And when the legislature gave me an extra year as mayor, yes! Carolyn, I just wow, I I'm getting 13, he got 12.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: But that is a quarter of a century, which is, oh my god, it is a long time.
- 33:28Sean McAllister: And there's a lot of a lot of good that has been done, and I know that more good is going to continue, and it's always so great to see you, Mayor.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you for having me.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: I have such fun, and you're just so wonderful.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: And I know it all comes from the the three of us who are from New York.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: And love and Las Vegas lovers, right?
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, but we have found.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Nirvana is here.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: It is for anybody.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: I I mean I can't imagine living where anywhere else in the world.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: Either.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: And most people who are here, for some, it's very hard for six months really to get that adjustment because people you could be living next to somebody and you may never meet them.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Because there's I don't know what that privacy draw is, yeah, but um there's no way.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: And we've known so many people who've moved somewhere else, they always come back.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: That is so true.
- 34:25Dayna Roselli: I say that every single time.
- 34:26Dayna Roselli: All right, well, we'll see ya, see you in two years or three, literally, and everyone.
- 34:30Dayna Roselli: I miss it, I want to come back.
- 34:31Dayna Roselli: I already have three friends that moved during the pandemic, and they all want to come back.
- 34:34Dayna Roselli: See?
- 34:35Dayna Roselli: And they will.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: And they will the weather, look at this.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: I know when you look at the weather across the country and what they have to put up with, and of course, you both come out of the snow, and those winters are tough.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: And then with the electrical systems going down, and then you look at the promising California, Vegas is the only spot.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: It's just it's so exciting.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: And if you get up at two in the morning and you forgot to go buy the milk or orange juice, you can go do that.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Or two, you call up a friend who's not sleeping, you say, Hey, I'll meet you.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Um, come on down to Abel Brewery or something.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Let's get a beer.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just it's wonderful.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: To say nothing now, of course, we got the nights and we got the Asias and we got the Raiders.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: So wonderful.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: It's kind of where we have everything.
- 35:23Dayna Roselli: I mean, we've been here 16 years and seen so much happen.
- 35:25Dayna Roselli: It's it's really unbelievable.
- 35:27Dayna Roselli: And we've been broadcasting a long time, so and we've been able to interview you in short spurts.
- 35:30Dayna Roselli: So this was so nice to be able to catch up for a longer period of time.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: It was a lot of fun, and I know you love downtown too.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: It is it's great.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 35:38Dayna Roselli: Thank you, Mayor.
- 35:39Dayna Roselli: Thanks.
- 35:42Sean McAllister: All right, time for our tips.
- 35:44Sean McAllister: By the way, just love sitting down with Carolyn Goodman anytime we get the chance to.
- 35:49Sean McAllister: So we hope you enjoyed that conversation.
- 35:51Sean McAllister: Uh, but the our first tip, Dana, uh deals with getting in and out of Las Vegas.
- 35:57Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 35:58Dayna Roselli: I used Jet Suite for a quick hop to LA, and boy, everyone has been telling me to use this for a long time.
- 36:05Dayna Roselli: I never got the chance, but it was a last-minute decision to go to an event in LA, and I thought, well, let me try this Jet Suite.
- 36:13Dayna Roselli: It's JSX.com.
- 36:15Dayna Roselli: Sean, like you pull up, you only need to be there like 20 minutes ahead of your flight.
- 36:19Dayna Roselli: You don't have to go through security or get your bags checked or anything.
- 36:23Dayna Roselli: You check in, they give you a little pass, you can wait on the couches where they got water and coffee and just kind of hang for a little bit, and then you walk through the hangar, you get on your plane, you're up in the air, they offer you a drink and a little snack, and then you land in LA, you walk off the plane, and you're done.
- 36:40Dayna Roselli: Like, it is so easy that I highly recommend it.
- 36:43Sean McAllister: It doesn't sound like it gets any better.
- 36:44Dayna Roselli: And it's like, and everyone's like, How do they do this?
- 36:46Dayna Roselli: And I'm like, I don't know, it's like the a private private charter.
- 36:49Dayna Roselli: I don't, I don't get it, and I and I don't care.
- 36:51Dayna Roselli: Because it was the best experience I've had for a quick hop to LA in a very, very long time.
- 36:57Dayna Roselli: Didn't have to go to the airport, go through the thing, go through security, check in, get on the plane, wait in line.
- 37:03Dayna Roselli: So I loved it.
- 37:04Dayna Roselli: Um and they have flights to San Diego and also uh Tahoe, Reno now, and then I think I think Wine Country, they just started Salt Lake City.
- 37:13Dayna Roselli: It's amazing.
- 37:14Sean McAllister: Phoenix.
- 37:15Dayna Roselli: So it's not that expensive.
- 37:17Dayna Roselli: If you buy ahead of time, you can get one ways for$99.
- 37:21Sean McAllister: Great.
- 37:22Dayna Roselli: Last minute, they'll go up to about$209, or possibly if it's like day before$3.09, but that's still less than a commercial flight.
- 37:30Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 37:30Dayna Roselli: A lot of times it is.
- 37:31Dayna Roselli: So check it out.
- 37:33Dayna Roselli: js.com.
- 37:34Sean McAllister: All right.
- 37:35Sean McAllister: And uh we are going back to downtown Las Vegas for our next tip.
- 37:39Sean McAllister: A lot of people don't realize that there is a lot of culture in downtown Las Vegas, and you can find that through the incredible museums that are housed there.
- 37:49Sean McAllister: We'll toss it back to Carolyn Goodman to give us the rundown.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: We are home to historic Vegas museums.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: We're working right now to bring the National Atomic Testing Museum down from where it currently has been for a long time, actually, next to DRI on Tropicana.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: No foot traffic there.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: None.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: And of course, the history of developing the bomb and all the test site activities.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: We have already were in dialogue with them and they're trying to raise the funds to move on to Symphony Park, where we have a space.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Then we have the Museum of Law Enforcement and the Mob, the organized crime, which is of course in the old federal courthouse.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: We have the Neon Museum, we have the Discovery Museum, we have the Natural History Museum.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: And so culture and the museums and education has uh brought us a whole nother piece of people who are studying, and they'll come in from around the world, especially in Great Britain.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: They love the mob.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: And of course, my husband represented all these wonderful figures, and so but they want to go and tour and see what law enforcement's been doing.
- 39:11Sean McAllister: Yeah, the museums really are top-notch, such great places to visit.
- 39:16Dayna Roselli: They are.
- 39:17Dayna Roselli: I've hit most of them, but I have not been to the natural history museum yet.
- 39:22Sean McAllister: Oh, that's a good one.
- 39:22Sean McAllister: Yeah, I like it there.
- 39:24Dayna Roselli: The one that I'm lacking, so I'll have to hit that up soon.
- 39:26Dayna Roselli: Boy, what a show.
- 39:27Dayna Roselli: So much going on in Las Vegas.
- 39:29Dayna Roselli: We know you've all been watching.
- 39:30Dayna Roselli: Want to remind you, we do have a t-shirt shop now.
- 39:32Dayna Roselli: We've got sweatshirts, masks, uh, stickers, those vaccinated AF t-shirts you've seen Sean and I wearing in a couple pictures.
- 39:40Dayna Roselli: We put one of those on there.
- 39:42Dayna Roselli: So go to our listener notes and we have a link, or just go to our social media.
- 39:47Dayna Roselli: We have links up there too.
- 39:48Sean McAllister: You will find it there, and we will uh talk to you again next week on episode 67 of Vegas Revealed.
- 39:56Dayna Roselli: And oh yeah, Sean, I'm heading back to the East Coast for a week.
- 39:59Dayna Roselli: So I look forward to sharing some stories from that, but finally getting to see the parents.
- 40:04Dayna Roselli: Haven't seen them since 2019.
- 40:06Dayna Roselli: I'm going to Rochester, New York.
- 40:08Dayna Roselli: I'm going to go to the Lilac Festival, and I know you're very jealous.
- 40:11Dayna Roselli: I love it.
- 40:12Dayna Roselli: I know, because that's what we're known for in Rochester, New York, is those lilacs.
- 40:15Sean McAllister: Oh, you'll have to eat a prime rib sandwich for me.
- 40:18Dayna Roselli: Will do, and many more.
- 40:19Dayna Roselli: And mom's cooking, which is which is even better.
- 40:22Dayna Roselli: Have a great week, everyone.
- 40:23Dayna Roselli: Bye.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: We got bills to pay.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Let's take a holiday.
