- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic and Patrick, we
- 0:17Speaker 1: were just talking about this. We have covered a lot
- 0:20Speaker 1: of seasons between the two of us, and this is
- 0:24Speaker 1: shaping up to be one of the odder one of
- 0:27Speaker 1: the harder to figure out seasons that we've ever covered.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This team. These players very up and down, very mercurial.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It wasn't an awful weekend for the Cubs. But I
- 0:44Speaker 1: think the last time did we record after the twenty
- 0:47Speaker 1: three run out first, I can't even remember they Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I think our last show title began with the Cubs
- 0:55Speaker 2: are back, Yeah, and then Friday afternoon they just get
- 0:59Speaker 2: their doors.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, just a complete reversal of Wednesday's game. Friday was
- 1:08Speaker 1: seventeen to one, if I'm remembering correctly. David Peterson did
- 1:16Speaker 1: not have his stuff, was not getting the ball on
- 1:19Speaker 1: the ground, and that's going to be a problem for
- 1:22Speaker 1: him if he's not doing that, and the Cardinals feed
- 1:26Speaker 1: up on. The Cubs won a squeaker on Saturday, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: then the Cubs Salvage one. But the up and down
- 1:34Speaker 1: nature of this season has been something that we just
- 1:37Speaker 1: haven't haven't seen before. We'll see if the Cubs can
- 1:41Speaker 1: make sure that it's not like a long downstretch, just
- 1:44Speaker 1: a couple off days there. But I think Saturday was
- 1:49Speaker 1: one of the ones. I didn't, you know, I was
- 1:51Speaker 1: trying to enjoy my Fourth of July. I think everyone's
- 1:53Speaker 1: fourth at least where we are was kind of ruined
- 1:57Speaker 1: in a sense fireworks wise, But you were like, what
- 2:01Speaker 1: happened at Wrinkley with the fog? That was an odd one.
- 2:06Speaker 1: That was one that I just don't like. I watched
- 2:11Speaker 1: a little bit of it. I thought when I first
- 2:13Speaker 1: turned on my TV, I'll just get my experience. When
- 2:15Speaker 1: I first turned on my TV to like check what
- 2:18Speaker 1: was going on, this was before the delay had come in,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and I thought there was something wrong with my TV
- 2:26Speaker 1: or the broadcast. I was like, what the hell is
- 2:29Speaker 1: with this broadcast? This is really poor quality? Like why
- 2:33Speaker 1: does it look like this? And then I realized what
- 2:37Speaker 1: was going on? What tell us the experience of being
- 2:40Speaker 1: there live?
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, as you know, the press box has a great
- 2:45Speaker 2: view of the whole fields, the stadium, the skyline and
- 2:51Speaker 2: the scoreboard, and obviously you know from field level, from
- 2:57Speaker 2: a player's perspective, it can be different with the lights
- 3:02Speaker 2: and things like that, and you know, there are certain
- 3:05Speaker 2: points on TV I thought it didn't look as bad
- 3:10Speaker 2: and then as Pek Armstrong leader said like, it was
- 3:12Speaker 2: kind of rolling in and out periodically, And at first
- 3:16Speaker 2: I thought it was just like, you know, a fireworks deal,
- 3:22Speaker 2: but you did not hear a ton of fireworks. And
- 3:27Speaker 2: then you just kind of realize that Wrigley Field is
- 3:31Speaker 2: this weird, unique sort of weather center. You don't really
- 3:37Speaker 2: know how the conditions are going to change from one
- 3:41Speaker 2: inning to the next, and you know, you know how
- 3:45Speaker 2: it is hot of a like, you know, we're working
- 3:47Speaker 2: on the PCA.
- 3:49Speaker 1: All Star story.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And then you're like, this is kind of weird, this fog,
- 3:55Speaker 2: but you know, is it a thing or not? And
- 3:58Speaker 2: then I like and I could not see the center
- 4:01Speaker 2: field scoreboard. It had just been completely covered in fuck,
- 4:07Speaker 2: and I was just like, like can they play in this?
- 4:11Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden, you see like the
- 4:13Speaker 2: umpires talking to the managers. You know, the Heaggs grounds
- 4:17Speaker 2: keeper is out there. You see a bunch of cubs
- 4:21Speaker 2: relievers kind of hanging out by the now the bullpen
- 4:25Speaker 2: gate is open, and then you know, in an editor
- 4:30Speaker 2: on Slack kind of pigmy like are we going to
- 4:33Speaker 2: do something on this? And I was like, start starting
- 4:36Speaker 2: the Google doc now. And it was only like a
- 4:40Speaker 2: fifteen minute delay. It did noticeably clear up. You did
- 4:48Speaker 2: start hearing more fireworks all of a sudden off in
- 4:52Speaker 2: the distance in the neighborhoods were just taken together, kind
- 4:56Speaker 2: of an only in Wrigleyville deal, and you know, Craig
- 5:00Speaker 2: Council never see anything like it. Ian Happ, the longest
- 5:05Speaker 2: tenure player on the team, said he had obviously seen
- 5:09Speaker 2: sort of moments like that, you know, stretches where they're
- 5:13Speaker 2: fog or your weird weather elements, but never like that thick.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a new one. We've definitely, yeah, we've
- 5:22Speaker 1: been there when it gets like foggy. But when I
- 5:26Speaker 1: started to see the images and the videos of the
- 5:30Speaker 1: when it was, you know, at its peak, I was like, oh,
- 5:33Speaker 1: this is different than what an experienced before. And when
- 5:36Speaker 1: I heard what you said, like and others were saying
- 5:39Speaker 1: it they couldn't see the scoreboard from the press box,
- 5:41Speaker 1: that's that's never happened. That's yeh. It may have just
- 5:45Speaker 1: been for a brief moment, but it was, Yeah, I
- 5:47Speaker 1: don't know how you could play in that, and it
- 5:49Speaker 1: made sense for them to pause it. But yes, just
- 5:52Speaker 1: more weirdness and just kind of symbolic of this season
- 5:55Speaker 1: of like don't know what to expect and kind of
- 5:57Speaker 1: don't know what's going on. It's just kind of gotten
- 6:01Speaker 1: to this point where it's like throw up your hands
- 6:03Speaker 1: and say you try and figure it out. One player
- 6:08Speaker 1: that feels like they've developed some consistency and become kind
- 6:13Speaker 1: of this player that I certainly didn't expect him to
- 6:17Speaker 1: be this type of player, but he has. You mentioned
- 6:19Speaker 1: him All Star Peak Armstrong, Let's take a break and
- 6:22Speaker 1: just talk about what Pete has become and why he's
- 6:26Speaker 1: so deserving of that All Star selection.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Hey, for the families out there looking for a different
- 6:32Speaker 3: path to help your child succeed at home, look into
- 6:35Speaker 3: K twelve powered schools. Todd Father, you've done the homeschooling
- 6:38Speaker 3: thing in the past.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I know you liked it.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Yeah I did. I liked it a lot. All my
- 6:42Speaker 4: kids have done it before. It's an opportunity for them
- 6:46Speaker 4: to stay at home and enjoy school just as much.
- 6:49Speaker 4: They learn a lot, and this is an opportunity for
- 6:52Speaker 4: families that are on the go too as well. They
- 6:54Speaker 4: have to understand, listen, can't be at a regular school
- 6:57Speaker 4: at all times. I need my child to be doing this,
- 7:00Speaker 4: whether it's an athletic career or whatever statue they are at.
- 7:03Speaker 4: And we loved every second of it, and I think
- 7:06Speaker 4: it is an easy opportunity for some children.
- 7:08Speaker 3: K twelve offers tuition free, accredited online public education for
- 7:12Speaker 3: students in K through twelve on a setting that works

- 7:28Speaker 3: slash foul.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Patrick. I did not see this coming for Pete crow Armstrong.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And when I say I did not see this, I
- 7:39Speaker 1: figured he'd have a hot stretch again this season. I
- 7:41Speaker 1: figured he'd be a really good player this season, great
- 7:44Speaker 1: defender speed. I did not expect the walks to pop
- 7:50Speaker 1: like this he's got. He is at a ten point
- 7:53Speaker 1: five percent walk rate. He's got a three eighty three
- 7:56Speaker 1: on base percentage with his speed and like base running skills,
- 8:02Speaker 1: that is scary. That is scary good and it hasn't
- 8:05Speaker 1: cost him power. He's actually so ISO. If people don't
- 8:09Speaker 1: know what ISO is, it's isolated power. It's a real
- 8:11Speaker 1: quick it's just basically slugging minus batting average. It's just
- 8:15Speaker 1: what do you do, like what's your extra base percentage? Essentially,
- 8:20Speaker 1: And he's actually a tick above last year two thirty
- 8:24Speaker 1: five verus two thirty four, So it hasn't cost him power,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and he's taking walks. He's much more selective. He talked
- 8:32Speaker 1: about it council and Jed talked about it on Friday.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It's it's something that he says kind of clicked over
- 8:40Speaker 1: the course of the season. It was like one pitch.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He's just looking for one pitch now. It doesn't like
- 8:45Speaker 1: he popped up a ri Cell Glacias slider. Glacias doesn't
- 8:51Speaker 1: throw sliders to lefties very often. He Pete's looking for
- 8:54Speaker 1: a fastball or a change up in that situation. I'm
- 8:56Speaker 1: going off memory, so forgive me if I got getting
- 8:59Speaker 1: the pitch mixed wrong here. But and he saw a
- 9:02Speaker 1: first pitch, hanging slider swung at it, popped it up
- 9:06Speaker 1: and missed it and comes back to the dugout, How
- 9:08Speaker 1: did I miss that pitch? You know it was a meatball.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Bregman told him something like you weren't looking for it,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and something clicked for Pete in that moment where it
- 9:21Speaker 1: doesn't matter if it's a strike now, if it's if
- 9:25Speaker 1: you don't have two strikes on, you don't swing at
- 9:27Speaker 1: it if it's not what you're looking for, because you're
- 9:31Speaker 1: not going to do damage on the pitch. And if
- 9:34Speaker 1: you look at his numbers, his swing rate is way down,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and it can be a little worrisome if you see, like, okay,
- 9:39Speaker 1: you're not swinging at anything. Your swing rate is down
- 9:42Speaker 1: on both chasing and in the zone. But he's still
- 9:46Speaker 1: attacking his pitch, and I think that is it is
- 9:49Speaker 1: a fine line and hard to walk and I've never
- 9:53Speaker 1: really seen a guy go from like a four to
- 9:56Speaker 1: five percent walk rate to double digits so quickly and
- 9:59Speaker 1: not set sacrifice something. But this is rare and kind
- 10:04Speaker 1: of special what we're seeing right now.
- 10:09Speaker 2: We all saw it last year and certainly the year
- 10:13Speaker 2: prior of there were these stretches where he seemed like
- 10:15Speaker 2: a pretty easy guy to pitch to. Obviously, he's so
- 10:20Speaker 2: talented and explosive that you know, if you made a mistake,
- 10:24Speaker 2: he could.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Go put one in the seats.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But there were moments where he seems to lack a
- 10:33Speaker 2: bit of focus. His plan wasn't as organized, he wasn't
- 10:37Speaker 2: as disciplined in that process. And I think you see
- 10:40Speaker 2: someone who's grown a lot, who's taken in a lot
- 10:44Speaker 2: of information, who's heard a lot of different voices and
- 10:49Speaker 2: kind of picked out what works for.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Him, and it's wild.
- 10:55Speaker 2: He's surrounded by all these players who are far more experience,
- 11:01Speaker 2: is a very veteran laden lineup, but he's the one
- 11:06Speaker 2: who's hardest to get out, who seems to be the
- 11:09Speaker 2: most locked in, you know, from pitch to pitch, at
- 11:14Speaker 2: bat to a bat, game to game, and he's really
- 11:18Speaker 2: carried them in June, and I mean that month was absurd,
- 11:22Speaker 2: you know, the it was five or six stats, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 2: within a calendar month, reaching you know, X level at
- 11:30Speaker 2: each one, and it was like Pete, Babe Ruth and
- 11:35Speaker 2: lou Gerrigg and they did it like I think it
- 11:39Speaker 2: was around nineteen thirty and I think Babe Ruth might
- 11:43Speaker 2: have done it twice, but just this absurd sort of
- 11:47Speaker 2: stats and you know, unbelievable names that he's now being mentioned.
- 11:51Speaker 1: In the same breath as. Okay, let's make this our
- 11:55Speaker 1: Daily Dingers segment, presented by Fan Duel. I just want
- 12:04Speaker 1: to talk about how this weekend was so representative of
- 12:09Speaker 1: how Pete. One thing that Pete said to me that
- 12:12Speaker 1: stood out he said he watched Ian Happ. I know
- 12:16Speaker 1: he's a polarizing figure, but he always respected how Hap
- 12:20Speaker 1: would go in slumps, but he'd take his walks. He'd
- 12:23Speaker 1: be getting on base. There's value in that. Pete was
- 12:27Speaker 1: not doing that if Pete slumped. Now, the value for
- 12:30Speaker 1: Pete when he slumps is defense. But is there a
- 12:33Speaker 1: way you can be valuable if you're not hitting? And
- 12:38Speaker 1: this is it. He did he crush the ball this weekend? No, Yeah,
- 12:42Speaker 1: he had four hits. It was a perfectly fine weekend.
- 12:45Speaker 1: He had four singles and then he had two walks,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and he got hit a couple of times. He was
- 12:51Speaker 1: getting on base, like his on base percentages like I said,
- 12:55Speaker 1: three eighty three, Like when you have a guy with
- 12:59Speaker 1: what he can do getting on bass regularly, and it's
- 13:02Speaker 1: what it was. It was funny, there's you know, apparently
- 13:05Speaker 1: Jed told him in the off season or before in
- 13:08Speaker 1: spring training, whatever, you know, the home runs are nice,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but you're most valuable when you're on first base. I
- 13:16Speaker 1: don't know if that's exactly true. Craig kind of bristled
- 13:19Speaker 1: at that. He's like, no, no, the home runs are better.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But but Craig said, he's like, maybe what he means
- 13:27Speaker 1: is this, you only have thirty thirty five homers. That's
- 13:31Speaker 1: six hundred plus other plate appearances. What are you going
- 13:34Speaker 1: to do with those? Well, because you're not going to hit,
- 13:37Speaker 1: you know, a home run every single time up, it's
- 13:39Speaker 1: a small percentage of your plate appearances. What can you
- 13:43Speaker 1: do in those other plate appearances and if you can
- 13:46Speaker 1: find a way to get on base, Especially now that
- 13:48Speaker 1: he's at the top of the lineup, you're talking about
- 13:51Speaker 1: a player that you know, there's a handful of players
- 13:55Speaker 1: that you could say are better than him right now
- 13:57Speaker 1: in the league. That's that's huge, huge, That is huge
- 14:01Speaker 1: for him, that's huge for this organization and this this lineup,
- 14:07Speaker 1: like the offense kind of revolves around him. I think
- 14:09Speaker 1: you wrote it, he's the straw that starts to drink
- 14:12Speaker 1: right now.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I just was like, I'll use the old quote
- 14:17Speaker 2: attributed to Reggie Jackson because like all of these, like
- 14:22Speaker 2: you know, huge names are are kind of circling around
- 14:26Speaker 2: Pete of like you know, whether it's the Babe and
- 14:31Speaker 2: Luke Gerrig looking at his war numbers, like, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 2: basically the most valuable position player in baseball right now.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I think Showhy obviously probably have a higher war overall,
- 14:46Speaker 2: but other than that, he's right in that mix. He
- 14:52Speaker 2: was probably not gonna win a popularity contest and the
- 14:55Speaker 2: fan voting, but this certainly wasn't like, oh, you have
- 15:00Speaker 2: to be on the team because every team on the
- 15:04Speaker 2: All Star team, because every team has to have a representative.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It's like, you know, this guy.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Is easily an MVP candidate, and if he can do
- 15:15Speaker 2: something similar to this on a consistent basis, he's going
- 15:19Speaker 2: to be an candidate every year for the rest of
- 15:23Speaker 2: his peak. I mean, because if you're talking about on
- 15:28Speaker 2: base skills, power and arguably the best defender in the world,
- 15:36Speaker 2: like this is, you know, I think this is once
- 15:40Speaker 2: again Pete sort of bailing out the Cubs, like he's
- 15:43Speaker 2: easily the most like valuable asset they have in their organization,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I guess. Besides, like Wrigley Field itself, like the person
- 15:49Speaker 2: who makes this all go, like they have a ten
- 15:53Speaker 2: game losing streak, just an awful month, and he comes
- 15:56Speaker 2: back with like one of the best months you could
- 15:59Speaker 2: possibly imagine individually. It's it's been impressive and it kind
- 16:07Speaker 2: of fits within the season. Like Pete, you know, did
- 16:10Speaker 2: not look great at the start of the season, you know,
- 16:12Speaker 2: and he got that big contract and he there are
- 16:16Speaker 2: times where he doesn't look like super happy, but that's
- 16:22Speaker 2: just how he's wired, you know. He has that that
- 16:26Speaker 2: edge to him for sure.

- 18:28Speaker 1: Okay, sorry about that, I was muted. So let's talk
- 18:34Speaker 1: about the Cubs pitching situation here, Patrick. We mentioned it
- 18:38Speaker 1: about a week or so ago. They added David Peterson,
- 18:44Speaker 1: they added Bryce Wilson. Wilson was here very shortly. It
- 18:48Speaker 1: wasn't a long stay, but they are just trying to
- 18:51Speaker 1: get through this period that the injuries have stacked up
- 18:56Speaker 1: to a level that I don't think any of us
- 18:59Speaker 1: have really seen before. Like we said, this is one
- 19:01Speaker 1: of the weirder seasons we have covered, and I think
- 19:04Speaker 1: this this pitching situation is part of it. They have
- 19:09Speaker 1: a week left before it's the All Star break, kind
- 19:13Speaker 1: of a exhale moment potentially for them if they can
- 19:16Speaker 1: get through these next two series. We had Jamison tye
- 19:21Speaker 1: on out in South Bend, I believe, throw a few innings,
- 19:24Speaker 1: maybe three and two thirds innings, and then Bryce Wilson
- 19:28Speaker 1: is out. Jake Woodford is in. Uh, they're just trying
- 19:32Speaker 1: to get innings. They're just trying to get through this
- 19:34Speaker 1: comares Drew Promerence is back. So you know, kudos to
- 19:40Speaker 1: this team forgetting as far as they have and and
- 19:43Speaker 1: kind of leveling up and not falling apart in a
- 19:47Speaker 1: moment that easily could have been, you know, really difficult
- 19:50Speaker 1: for them.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, Pamerance is someone
- 19:58Speaker 2: who I'm gonna be writing out about here shortly. I
- 20:02Speaker 2: think he's kind of an interesting guy, just as someone
- 20:06Speaker 2: who's like thinking about retirement and wound up pitching in
- 20:10Speaker 2: all four playoff games the Cups won last year. Things
- 20:14Speaker 2: did not work out in Anaheim. It seems like things
- 20:18Speaker 2: rarely do out there. And you know, he acknowledged that.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Like the Cubs know what it looks like when he's
- 20:30Speaker 2: going right, like the checkpoints, the feels, the kind of
- 20:34Speaker 2: thought process, like they are all on the same page there.
- 20:38Speaker 2: The manager has a long history with him, It's going
- 20:41Speaker 2: to give him every opportunity. Curious to see what ty
- 20:48Speaker 2: On can give them. It seems like, you know, Cabrera Poalencia,
- 20:54Speaker 2: a lot of those other guys are you know, obviously,
- 20:57Speaker 2: after the All Star break, and still have steps to go.
- 21:01Speaker 2: But you know, the season hasn't gone totally off the
- 21:06Speaker 2: rails because of the pitching injuries. And I think that's
- 21:11Speaker 2: what you're gonna see over these next several days. I
- 21:18Speaker 2: think we got about four weeks until the trade deadline.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Jed I really feel the other day again said that
- 21:26Speaker 2: he doesn't expect things to really move until it's a
- 21:32Speaker 2: lot closer towards the August third deadline, So they're gonna
- 21:35Speaker 2: have to churn through some guys and see what sticks.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah, we we got what did you say? Four weeks
- 21:44Speaker 1: less than that before the deadline, So I think there's
- 21:48Speaker 1: a Jed did talk a few days ago and kind
- 21:52Speaker 1: of sorry, I don't want to start a coughing fit again.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Jed did talk a few days ago and kind of
- 22:01Speaker 1: address the idea of, you know, what type of deadline
- 22:05Speaker 1: they could have. It's different if you're one game over
- 22:09Speaker 1: five hundred and and you know, five games back in
- 22:13Speaker 1: the division, and ten games over five hundred and five
- 22:16Speaker 1: games back to the division, right like that, Like where
- 22:18Speaker 1: you are, even not relative in the standings, can impact things.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So I think there will be pitching added. What level
- 22:28Speaker 1: of pitching it is is what the question is, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: that's not coming for a little bit. So let's see
- 22:37Speaker 1: what they can do to get by in these next
- 22:39Speaker 1: few weeks. But this this week is a big one.
- 22:44Speaker 1: If you can go, you know, four and two, that's
- 22:46Speaker 1: a huge win for this For the end of this
- 22:49Speaker 1: season and this stretch here, we'll see where they are
- 22:54Speaker 1: come to All Star Break. But I think this is
- 22:56Speaker 1: a big moment for them, and if they can get through,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I think will be Cubs fans should be feeling very
- 23:03Speaker 1: optimistic about where their team is and how they're doing.
- 23:07Speaker 1: All right, let me take one more drink of water
- 23:09Speaker 1: and I'll wrap this up. I don't know, there's like
- 23:14Speaker 1: something in my throat hair. So we're gonna get through
- 23:16Speaker 1: this quickly. You need to get to the All Star break. Yeah,
- 23:22Speaker 1: thanks so much for listening. This is north Side Territory.
