- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Ryan Muhammad, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare. I'm thrilled to have with me today
- 0:07Carl Hoopes, executive vice president and chief operating
- 0:10officer of Grants Mental Health. Carl, welcome to
- 0:13the podcast. We're very excited to have you
- 0:15join us today. To get us started, would
- 0:16you mind please introducing yourself and telling us
- 0:18a bit about your background?
- 0:20Hi, Mariah. Thank you so much for having
- 0:22me. It's my pleasure to be on today.
- 0:24Yeah. So I'd love to tell you a
- 0:25little bit about myself. So I'm originally from
- 0:28Colorado.
- 0:29I've been in health care my entire career.
- 0:32I started out in community mental health with
- 0:36addiction recovery services,
- 0:38working in acute care inpatient behavioral health,
- 0:41and really just was drawn to the mission
- 0:43and the purpose, helping people in the community
- 0:46get better, in a high needs area.
- 0:49I progressed through my career
- 0:51on the operational side going into large health
- 0:54care systems.
- 0:55I've, worked at Stanford Health Care, Ascension,
- 0:59UCS Health.
- 1:00Really enjoyed my my time at these different
- 1:03organizations
- 1:04and really embraced the challenge of turning mission
- 1:07into execution
- 1:08at scale.
- 1:10For me, that's, you know, we we have
- 1:12a great mission. We wanna serve a lot
- 1:14of people, but oftentimes,
- 1:16the bigger mission that we have gets,
- 1:19kind of lost in translation with the operation
- 1:21of how we'll execute on that. And so
- 1:24I've, through my career, learned, a lot about
- 1:27lean principles
- 1:28and work to develop those lean principles
- 1:30so that we could execute efficiently
- 1:33and deliver on the mission that we promise.
- 1:36My current role is now at Grand
- 1:39Mental Health. I really enjoy it. I'm in
- 1:41Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- 1:43We serve about 18,000
- 1:45Oklahomans.
- 1:46We have inpatient addiction recovery services. We have
- 1:49a very strong telepsych presence.
- 1:51We do crisis services,
- 1:54outreach services. We really have a large
- 1:57impact in the Tulsa community
- 1:59and beyond.
- 2:00So very proud of the work that we
- 2:02do here. I was really drawn to the
- 2:05mission driven nature of the people who work
- 2:07here. A lot of our employees were actually
- 2:10served by Grand and then ended up coming
- 2:13to work for Grand because of the transformative
- 2:15nature of the care that they received. And
- 2:18so, I've just loved my time here and
- 2:20and very excited to be at Grand.
- 2:22Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you so much for giving
- 2:25that background.
- 2:26For you, we're still at the at the
- 2:28beginning of the year. What opportunities and headwinds
- 2:32do you kinda have your eye on right
- 2:33now?
- 2:34Yeah. So, you know, one of the big
- 2:37opportunities we have is,
- 2:39elevating the client experience.
- 2:41And so we're seeing a lot of opportunity
- 2:44to
- 2:45strengthen our community partnerships.
- 2:47There is so much need that we're not
- 2:50able to meet it as a single entity,
- 2:52so we partner with people across the community
- 2:56to be able to re meet these needs.
- 2:58And so part of it is if someone
- 3:00is coming in and being assessed and our
- 3:02services are a match, then we want to
- 3:04be able to get them in to be
- 3:06seen quickly,
- 3:07have appointments available,
- 3:09and get them in to get that care
- 3:11that they they eagerly need. But,
- 3:14aligning those resources so that we have appointments
- 3:17available so that it's a smooth and seamless
- 3:19process,
- 3:20things that we continue to work on, I
- 3:22think we're making a a lot of leeway
- 3:25into,
- 3:26improving our customer experience.
- 3:28I think we're developing really strong partnerships,
- 3:31and so that's going really well.
- 3:34Funding is another headwind that we have right
- 3:37now. We're seeing some strides being made in
- 3:40our local government to help fund a lot
- 3:43of the programs that we need. So I
- 3:45think we're definitely headed in the right direction
- 3:48despite some of these headwinds.
- 3:50Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. And how are you thinking
- 3:53about growth and, I guess, adding value to
- 3:56your organization
- 3:57this year or or within the next, few
- 4:00years?
- 4:01Yeah. So part of that is to
- 4:05work on some of the standardization.
- 4:07So I talked about my lean background,
- 4:10and then a lot of that is making
- 4:12sure that we have a product,
- 4:14especially for our clients, that when they get
- 4:16in, they have a pretty seamless experience
- 4:19and that no matter which site they go
- 4:21to or which service they use, that they
- 4:23get that that same service over time. And
- 4:25so we're working to streamline a lot of
- 4:27their processes
- 4:29and get real time feedback from our clients
- 4:31where perhaps there was a delay or something
- 4:34didn't go the way that we want. But
- 4:36I think as we continue to improve that
- 4:38client experience,
- 4:39that's really gonna help us as we scale.
- 4:41We're gonna grow, and we are growing into
- 4:43more more areas currently. And so we wanna
- 4:46grow the right way in a sustainable manner
- 4:48and,
- 4:49continue to improve our access and continue to
- 4:53provide great high quality services. So that's a
- 4:56that's a big area of focus.
- 4:58I think we're also looking at diversification.
- 5:01So we have a core group of services
- 5:03that we provided,
- 5:04and we're going to expand that.
- 5:06We're gonna look at going beyond just where
- 5:10we have provided services in Tulsa, but could
- 5:12we do that in different counties? Can we
- 5:14do that in different states? And we believe
- 5:17we can, and we will continue
- 5:19to move and expand and grow there and
- 5:21may even be looking at different,
- 5:24branches of the business that we haven't ventured
- 5:26into before. So very excited about the future
- 5:29here.
- 5:30Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. And then
- 5:33it sounds very hopeful. Is there any risk
- 5:36or investment,
- 5:37you think others should be making this year
- 5:40or that you hope to make this year
- 5:41within your organization?
- 5:44Yeah. I think one of the big investments
- 5:47that,
- 5:48is paying off for us and, you know,
- 5:50could be seen as a risk is,
- 5:53AI is a investment worth making. We have
- 5:56a partnership with Ilios,
- 5:58and so they're helping on, many fronts. One
- 6:02of them is with transcribing
- 6:04for our clinicians.
- 6:05It's really been transformational
- 6:08to have that data captured, to have real
- 6:10time chart monitoring,
- 6:12to have,
- 6:14a a lot of different processes in place
- 6:17that give us more time to devote to
- 6:19our clients.
- 6:20I think that is definitely worth looking into
- 6:23different tools that can augment and improve efficiency
- 6:26in a clinical setting.
- 6:28I think another one is EHR,
- 6:30so we are looking to move to a
- 6:33new EHR platform.
- 6:35Many people have gone through that, and that
- 6:37takes it takes a lot of work. It's
- 6:39a heavy lift, but we really believe that
- 6:42the tools that can come with that, the
- 6:45ease of,
- 6:46operating in a new environment
- 6:48can really provide
- 6:50a streamlined process,
- 6:52ease for our clinicians,
- 6:55better outcomes for our clients. So I think
- 6:58putting some money into technology and tools and
- 7:01taking the risk to have some bumps in
- 7:02the road along the way is really worth
- 7:04it.
- 7:05Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. AI is definitely a a
- 7:08hot topic right now, so I completely agree
- 7:10with you there. And then,
- 7:12before I let you go, I wanted to
- 7:14ask, where do you see the best opportunities
- 7:17for growth in the future?
- 7:19Yeah. I think it's continuing to meet our
- 7:22clients
- 7:23where they are at.
- 7:25We have developed some new technology
- 7:27solutions
- 7:28that make engaging with our clients remotely
- 7:32even more seamless than it's been in the
- 7:34past.
- 7:35I believe, you know, we had mentioned that
- 7:37we're, seeing about 18,000 clients now. I think
- 7:40that that is completely scalable
- 7:43in a high quality way,
- 7:45using our tools and technologies that we've developed
- 7:49so that we can at least get that
- 7:50first interaction with our clients maybe in a
- 7:53virtual way because that's easier for them. Maybe
- 7:55they're in a crisis situation,
- 7:58in an emergency room. We've expanded
- 8:00and offer our services there virtually, and then
- 8:03we're able to also use our infrastructure
- 8:06to pick clients up, bring them to us,
- 8:08help them stabilize where it's needed, get them
- 8:11connected to our outpatient services.
- 8:14We're looking to expand and grow
- 8:16our outpatient services, our integration,
- 8:19where we either embed some of our therapists
- 8:22or embed our technology
- 8:24and local community health providers
- 8:26sites or in EDs. We've just expanded
- 8:30to multiple EDs throughout the region.
- 8:32So I think,
- 8:34there's really a lot of opportunity to embed
- 8:36in emergency environments, hospital environments, and telehealth and
- 8:40beyond.
- 8:41Yeah. That sounds absolutely wonderful, and thank you
- 8:44so much for those final thoughts. It's definitely
- 8:46been a very informative discussion. So, again, I
- 8:48wanna thank you so much for coming on
- 8:50Becker's HealthCare, especially for the first time, and
- 8:53I look forward to connecting with you again
- 8:55soon.
- 8:56Thank you so much, Mariah. It truly was
- 8:57a pleasure.
