- 0:04SPEAKER_02: What's up everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Welcome to another episode of the Bottom Line on Sports, our show about the intersection between sports and money.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: And this week's number, 35 million.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: That, my friend, is the bonus pool for the NBA players in the playoffs.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: It's uh were you sure when I read that number, were you shocked by how low it was?
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, let me let me re- let me let me put it like this.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: I was not shocked by how low it was because I didn't view it that way.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I was more like, so I was more like, that doesn't seem enough to inspire people who make that's what I mean.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: So it's the same thing.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: I just looked at it, yeah.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: We looked at it the same way.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: I just looked at it like somebody who doesn't have an MBA.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: But I was like, well, that's like chump change, man.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So I looked up like SGA, right?
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So SGA is let's say OKC is most likely to win the title, right?
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So the winning, if you're on a championship team, your bonus is going to be$828,000.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: This is for the entirety of the playoffs, okay?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: SGA's salary, assuming he played 82 games.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: I did the I did the math, he makes$438,000 per game.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So it would be two regular season games or more than his playoff share.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And that's if that's if they win the championship.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, like it's like Joker was, I just did the math.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Like Joker and Luca were both over$600,000 per regular season game.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: So uh it's absurd to me.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's why money is not a motivator, nor is it a deterrent in the NBA.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and I say that if if you if you branch it out just a little bit, um, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley were talking about how you stop tanky, and maybe Draymond Green said, Oh, you can find the teams.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: There's not enough money you can find billionaires to make it hurt.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: It's just not.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: And all they do is write it off.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: And so it's I mean, it's it's pointless.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, I mean you have to you have to create an incentive for winning.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Right now, there's an incentive for losing, which is you get the highest draft choices.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: So you just got to figure out what is an incentive for winning?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: That's the only way they're gonna stop tanking.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Now, what one thing was the incentive for winning is we just put the same, everybody's got the same.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: If you're in a lottery, you got a ball.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: You got one ball.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: And so there's 13 or there, you know, however many lottery teams are.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: So every everybody in the lottery has exactly the same chance to win to uh to get the pick.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: And so that way, you know, I don't I I would think it would prohibit it some just because there's you know, the odds are so small you're going to get it that it's not worth blowing your whole season for.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: That one guy out there.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, there's gotta be something.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: It's also not worth trading your whole roster, you know, to try to try to you know do poorly to try to get a big, you know, a better pick, you know, one year or the next year.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: You know, and like this year, this year I think the the tanking's the tanking is particularly acute because there's like eight or nine really good players that are likely to come out in this draft.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Whereas, you know, a couple of years ago when Risha Shea was like the number one pick and nobody who knew knew who any of the top ten picks were, that was totally different.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: But this year's this year, there is a lot of incentive to lose because you're gonna get a good player.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so if if if we take it back to the original topic, how much money would inspire a guy?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Like, I think you just want to win a championship.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: I don't think the money, once you get to the playoffs, I don't think the money, any kind of bonus inspires you to do anything.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think well, I think the bonus matters to guys, you know, 10 to 15 on the roster, you know, maybe some.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say it might it might matter to them.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: And you know, I think I I'll put it like this maybe it matters because I believe this most teams like say the say say say uh the Thunder win a championship again, and their bonus is whatever it is,$12 million for winning.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I think most of those teams go, hey, let's give the equipment guys Yeah, I think that's right.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I think that's right.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Let's give the trainers$500,000.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: And so for those people, that's life-changing.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, let's get a ball boy a hundred thousand.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: I think they do stuff like that because the reality of it is it's sofa change money for them, for most of them.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: And you know, it doesn't change their life, one iota.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And so I think they use that money to, I think a lot of teams use that money to uh help, you know, the their support staff.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, because again, if you're Joe Blow and you make a hundred thousand dollars or you make a hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and somebody says, Oh, here's a four hundred thousand dollar bonus.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: No, your life has changed.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Of course, of course.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's hope let's hope it's used for that, because there's a there's a tremendous number of people who make these NBA franchises go who don't who don't make any any significant amount of money.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: And with that, my friend, let's shift into um okay.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: We I thought this was interesting.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: We were looking at the top-selling jerseys, and you know what we should have done.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: You know, these are things you think about it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: We should have gone back and got the list of the top-selling jerseys from 10 years ago.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I bet Steph Curry's on there.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: And LeBron.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Hold on, I'll I'll I'll do it.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Well, top-selling jerseys, NBA jerseys.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: So that would be Kevin Durant's on there.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: 2015 to 2016.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: All right, let's just do it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: I bet those are the three on there.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Steph Curry, LeBron is probably number one.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: So Curry's still number one.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Did that did that surprise you or not?
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Uh not.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Let me see.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: No, here's why.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Guess it was number one.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: By the way, guess it was number one in 2015, 2016.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: It had to be LeBron.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Curry.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Curry?
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, they were probably winning championships then.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Um, here's why Curry doesn't surprise me.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Number one, high likability factor.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Nobody hates Steph Curry.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Nobody's debating whether he's a chump or a punk or everybody just loves Steph Curry.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Number two, he's a he's the everyman fan guy.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Everybody can shoot threes.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: That's just practice and effort.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Everybody can't do LeBron.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: You know, everybody's not 6'9, 280.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: No, he's 42-inch burger.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: He he has greater appeal, and you can also emulate what Steph does on the court if you're right.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: So he's got likability, he's got a game you can emulate, and for the up until the last year or two, his team's been a winner.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think he's just a nice guy.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Like the worst thing you hear about Steph Curry is his wife doesn't treat him good enough.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: That's literally the worst thing you hear.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Aisha should appreciate him more.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Really, that's what you hear about him.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Other than that, he's like, he's got no scandal next to him.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's true.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: I think that's why his jersey's number one.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Well, he's also he's also a transformational player.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, he transformed, or he was the the face that transformed the NBA into the three-point era.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: He really, he really was.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not just a face, he did think.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: So he's got I saw something the other day, man.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: It's not even a positive, but it's Steph Curry Impact.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Uh what it must have been on some kind of TikTok or Twitter thing.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: And you know what it was?
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: It was some five-year-old who could really play for five years old.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, he could go between, I mean, he had great handles and stuff, got a steal, and a five-year-old pulled up from three.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, because that's how you, I mean, I ain't no basketball expert, but that's how you develop horrible habits because you can't, you're not strong enough to you're launching it as opposed to shooting it.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: But the fact that he wanted to pull up from three is all about Steph Curry.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Well, 100%.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I think that's right.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: So what I thought, okay, so if you look at the list of the top five jerseys for this year, top five selling jerseys for this year are Curry was one, Luca was two, Brunson was three, Jalen Brunson from the Knicks was three, Wemby was fourth, and LeBron was fifth.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: And okay, now if you look at that, Jalen Brunson is all about the New York factor.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what's interesting about that is I'm looking at the list from 2015 to 2016.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: The fourth best-selling jersey, and this will get a laugh from you, I guarantee you, the fourth best-selling jersey in 2015-2016 was Carmelo Christoph Sporzingis.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was a he was with the Knicks.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: He was huge, he was huge here for the Knicks.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So, but but it does show you like the power of even though the Knicks haven't really.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: So yeah, so they're always their fan base is always going to be this is our year, and they're gonna be disappointed at the end of the year.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: But it's more importantly, Curry was number one, Luca was two, and Brunson was three, which means that two former Dallas Mavericks players are two and three, just so you just so you know that.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: And Cooper Flag is over there number nine.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's three of the top ten.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: That's how we do these things, yeah.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: All right, all right, Dallas Mavericks.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: And Cooper Flag, let me tell you something, brother.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Cooper Flag will probably crack the top five next year, and here's why.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: What is it about Cooper Flag on this list that stands out?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Well, he's 19, so he's the youngest on the list.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: That's positive, that's true.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and so there's there's an appeal there.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: He is the only white American player on the list.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Is that what you're thinking?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Bam! Yeah, now and that that's that's just pure marketing.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: It's a that's that's true.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, he's some, and just like and I'm I'm serious, just like black kids grow up and say, Oh, I want to be Jalen Brunson, I want to be LeBron Jane.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: I want to you know, here's a guy who's a high flyer, terrific player, 19 years old.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: I want to be Cooper Flag.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, he's cracking top five next year.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Plus, the merits will be a better team next year.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because Kyrie will be back, they'll have whatever lottery pick.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: You think so?
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: You think he'll crack the top five?
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Because I think you've got let me tell you something.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I see him because he's in Dallas every year, yeah, every night.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: I wasn't when they took him number one, I was like, oh, okay, cool.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: You know, he's supposed to be the best player in the draft.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: That dude is phenomenal, man.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: He's he's got, I mean, there was like a switch that turned on right around the first of the year where he went from being a rookie to starting to play like a man, like a very, I mean, like he's a very he's a very he's got a very, very veteran-like game in terms of it's it's amazing.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: I've got another podcast, Joptalk, that's really about Dallas sports and lifestyle.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: And we were talking about this probably two months ago, because you could see it coming, and I was like, he's gonna be averaging like 28, 8, and 8 in two years, maybe three.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: And it's only based on the development of his three-point shot because he's a worker, and so he's shooting like 30 percent right now.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Two years, just because he'll work at it, that thing will be 37.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: That'll be six or seven, eight more points a game just because he's making threes.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: And he'll his points per game will shoot up.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: But he averaged like 23, 6, and 6 the last six.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So so I think I think the two players at the top of the list next year are probably the three top three players next year are because I think Curry's gonna dip a little bit next year, and LeBron is probably LeBron's at number five, he'll probably stick around there.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: I think are I I agree with you.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: I think they are Wemby, Cooper Flag, and Luca.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: I think Luca still stays up there pretty high.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Um because he's in the Los Angeles market.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, plus Luca, man, you know, Luca gets Luca is so good, he gets hate.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: And hate, the definition of hate, because a lot of y'all don't know the definition of hate.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: Definition of hate is unjustified criticism.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: So when you're hating on something, your criticism is unjustified because somebody's doing really good at something and you're just being negative.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: He gets a lot of uh a lot of hate because is he's he's the best offensive player in the league.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: Now, I didn't say he was the best player in the league.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's certainly not the best defensive player in the league.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: He's the best offensive player in the league.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, so he's going to be up there.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't be surprised for him to be number one because he's gonna do his thing again.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Um, well, you know, he doesn't have the personality of a wimbeat.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: I don't think Cooper Flag cracks the top three.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: I think he'll be in the top five.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: So do I.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: But somebody's got to be three.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Maybe it'll be J Runner.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: It could be Curry, could be Brunson.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I I can't believe Brunson's three, but you know, could be Brunson.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't think any of these other guys are making a move up.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: It's not like SGA, who might be the best player in the last 10 years, if he you know leads OKC to another championship, wins another MVP, and then his name finals MVP.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Not that many players in history have done all of those things.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, he's but he's no one, you know, he's he plays in a middle market, he doesn't have an exciting game.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised he's even that high.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: All right, like, no, you know what it is, and I was I was um this makes sense to me.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: So I had another project today, and we were doing a bunch of interviews as part of we're doing a shooting of commercial for some people at a uh rehab center, and so we were talking to some rehab people, and two people the one occupational therapist, one physical therapist, both of them gave outstanding answers to the questions I was asking.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Here's the difference one of them had just a normal, everyday personality, and the other one was just I mean, of course her her charisma just for sitting in a chair was just off the charts.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: And when we got done, I told uh the director, I go, that's the one right there.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Right, of course, of course.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, you don't have to think about it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you gotta go this way.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: And so SGA don't have that personality, you know what I'm saying?
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Neither does Jeff Potato.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know who's got it?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Anthony Edwards has it.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Um he can if he wants it.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if he wants it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: So so the factors, I think there's three or four factors that go into it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: One is the personality slash likability, which is you know, you're you're talking that's curry.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: One is the uh demographic, you know, you mentioned that with Cooper Flag.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: He's a specific demographic.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Um uh another one is the location where you play.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: And another one is do you guys win or not?
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And if you win on win a lot or not, you're likely on TV a lot.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: That's why.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So I was looking at the, you know, it's interesting.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: I was looking at the top of the top ten uh jersey sales from 2015 to 2016 during the kind of the the height of the Warriors heyday.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Curry was one, splash the brother, Clay Thompson was seven, and Draymond Green was eight.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Like, why does anybody want Draymond Green's jersey?
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Like, I understand why you want Klay Thompson's jersey, but Draymond Green, he's just dirty work.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: That's a matter of winning and uh on TV all the time.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Um see, like if we were just talking about best players, you know, SGA would be up there.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: You know, Tyrese Maxie, who's actually from Dallas, would be, I mean, he would be up there because he's phenomenal, man.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Cade Cunningham is from Dallas.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: He would be up there.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh but those guys don't have any personality.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: They're in the they're in the top 15, which also means like Lamello is 15, which means Lamello, Lamello's very popular among uh like the younger, uh, younger crowd.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: He's he's popular with the crowd that's represents everything that's wrong with society today.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: That's the crowd he's popular with.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And uh we all know kids who fit into that category.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: He's that kid.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: So so he's popular.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm not even surprised.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Uh and I always know a kid who knows a kid like him.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: And we're just like, and then we tell our kids, you can't hang around that kid all the time.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Right, right, exactly.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: You hang around with him a little bit, but you can't be with them all the time.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they can't be in your top five.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, that was that was that was that was a I saw the end of it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: That was a ridiculous game last night between the Heat and the uh between uh Charlotte and the Heat.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Um okay, see, I'm gonna I'm gonna rewind for a minute.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: You see the way the Hornets were jumping around and just going crazy after they won, had nothing to do with any kind of bonus they were getting.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Fair.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: That's totally fair.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: That's why the bonus doesn't do anything.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's the desire to win that drives everything.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that was a big that was a big deal because it's they had a sort of a 25-game, they sort of had a 25-game improvement from last year, this this year in terms of wins, roughly, roughly that amount.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: And it was, I think, the first playoff game that they've they've had in like 10 years, and they won it.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Now, are they gonna are they gonna win, you know, and and actually get into the real playoffs?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: But I don't think it matters anymore.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: I think they just need to have that one moment.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, and I think you're right.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: I think it's that is that is what their incentive is, is to is to do that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Um what about Jokic and Durant?
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: You surprised at where they are?
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Thought they'd be higher?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Jokic is like Jokic can be higher.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: He's one of the best players in the league.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Jokic is old man.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Jokic is 10th and Durant is uh Durant doesn't surprise me as 11 because he's not playing in a marquee market necessarily.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Although it's it's it's a big city, but it's not a marquee market.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And uh Jokic is uh you know, Jokic is a great player, but he's sort of people are sort of he's like a grudgingly great player.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Everybody knows he's great, but he's not you know not exciting.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not he's not he he's he's not exciting.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: He's he's like, yeah, I mean he's don't get me wrong, he's a great player.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: His statistics this year are insane, you know, just insane.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Um, and he's not gonna win the MVP, but you can make the case that he should have won the MVP, you know, he could have won the MVP for each of the last like five or six years pretty easily, yeah.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: And then uh what about LeBron holding there at five?
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: I don't, you know, LeBron has been around so long that now people hate him.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: It's like, can you leave?
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like, y'all are hating him, and he's 41, and he still on a given night can go 30, 10, and 10.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Now he can't do it every night anymore.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think but he can still do it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so they're they're playing the the Rockets in the first round of the playoffs.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you got Luca and Austin Reeves are out, and let's say Luca and Austin Reeves don't don't end up playing in the series.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: You're telling me he's not the best player in that series?
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Seriously, who's who's better than him?
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Uh there's nobody, there's nobody on either team who are better than him.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: There's people on either team like like Thompson's a better defender and you know he's got more hops, and you got Durant is a better, probably better pure scorer, but who's an overall better player?
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Nobody.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: That's remarkable.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's remarkable.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: So you can't you can't you can't really argue that.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I think I think LeBron, I think five is sort of the top for LeBron now.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: The only caveat would be if he announces that next year is his farewell season, then it might then he might rise a little bit.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: But if he doesn't, I think five is about the top for him.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Bottom line for me, look for Cooper Flag to make an amazing run into the top five next year.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: As his uh fellow white Americans realize he's the only one on the list who can ball.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: But but bottom line for me, we're gonna find there's gonna be a surprise entrance into the top ten next year, either from the rookie class or from a star that emerges from the playoffs in the next couple of months.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: Now, moving on, the NFL rights package, the Department of Justice now is peeking at them.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: I know is just from my own personal life, you'll never like the Department of Justice looking into your business.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: It's so so what what the DOJ is basically looking at is something related to, you know, what we often talk about in our spare time, which is the NFL Broadcasting Act of 1961.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, what is that?
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: That that essentially meant means that the government carved out an antitrust exemption for the NFL so they can negotiate television rights collectively with the three networks, because otherwise it would have been illegal for them to negotiate collectively.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: That would have violated antitrust law.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: So the reason they did that is to facilitate the games being on network television.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: There were three networks at the time.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: What's happened since then is that you have the Amazons of the world, the ESPNs of the world, and other streamers and network uh other cable networks that are buying packages, uh, you know, or buying NFL games.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: That's not covered.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: That's not covered under the broadcasting act.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: So they're still bargaining collectively with them.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: So the league is still doing collective bargaining.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: So that's sort of the sticking point.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: That is Department of Justice saying, well, hold on a second.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Is that legal?
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Number one.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: And number two, is part of the reason the the uh antitrust exemption was carved out was to allow greater access so people could actually watch the games, you know.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And now the question is, is is it now, you know, where does it sit?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's a really a gray area.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure how it gets resolved.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: The NFL, for its part, says 87% of its games are on one of the major networks.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: But okay, but a lot of the good games and a lot of the higher profile games are behind a paywall.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: So where does it where does it go?
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Where does it give?
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: This is kind of interesting.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and at one level, I'm not sure how much it matters to me because I'm just gonna buy what I want to watch anyway.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: Um, and maybe that's the whole thing.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: But I'm not I'm not so uh into myself that I go, well, everybody just can't say I'm just gonna buy what I want to watch anyway.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Um, so you being the unbiased observer, what would be the the fairest thing to do?
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, that's a very good question.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: I think that there needs to be a minimum requirement of games on broadcast network, and I and I think that it's not just an absolute number of games.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: There has to be some determination of there has to be a certain level of quality of game that appears.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: You just can't give us Cleveland and uh whoever else stinks in the case.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Cleveland, you can't give us Cleveland and Cincinnati, which is what we got all the time growing up at Columbus, was all only Cleveland and Cincinnati.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: But um, but you can't give us you know Cleveland against you know Cincinnati or or you know Cleveland against Jacksonville or something every week.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Um it's got there got that has to be so there has to be some level of specificity that A X percentage of games have to be over you know over broadcast air.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Um, B, you know, Y percentage of playoff games have to be on broadcast networks, and and C some element of the top games of the week need to also be on, you know, need to be on network television.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I think that's going to be the fairest way to do it.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And then I also think it's almost impossible to say, okay, Amazon, um, you can negotiate however, you know, if if the NFL can't negotiate collectively the TV rights, who does Amazon actually negotiate with?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: And so then does it become Amazon says, okay, we're gonna negotiate with the Dallas Cowboys and we're gonna have an Amazon Dallas Cowboys package?
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: You know, is that is that how that works?
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: So I just think that by removing the collective bargaining on you know, the NFL's collective bargaining for meteorites, I think that opens up a whole other yeah.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: So you don't want to uh you don't want to do that because I guarantee I guarantee I'll bet you everything that's in my 401k, and I'm actually at seven digits now.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: That's great, man.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: That the Cowboys would be first in line.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Hey, we've got hey, we're open for business.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Of course, and the Cowboys are the most valuable franchise.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: So yeah, with no question about it.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: You know, and it's kind of like it's not exactly the same, but look at what Notre Dame did in college football.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: You know, Notre Dame negotiates its own new Notre Dame negotiates its own deal.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not the same, but that's a I don't know if that's a likelihood of this.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: I I mean I don't I can't believe that they will not allow the NFL to you know collectively bargain with the streamers and such.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I just I just can't, I don't I don't believe that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I think it'll just put a cap on the number of games that you know that that those guys do.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: We all know the wheels of justice move slowly.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: They're just now poking around on it.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: It could be a decade before any movement happens.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Well, the the negotiating windows really kind of open up in 2029.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And so I think there'll be some movement on it before then.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Uh but you're right.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but but you're right.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: It could be it could be pushed beyond, beyond, beyond that, and that this may this may not necessarily have a meaningful conclusion before before then.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: And number one, and number two is there will always be an appeal if the NFL doesn't get what what it thinks it wants.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So that's that's the question.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: But it is it does, I think it does put pressure on the upcoming negotiations because what the NFL doesn't want to do is say, all right, we're gonna give 30% of our games to over-the-air broadcast, because then it opens up a can of worms.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I think what it's probably doing, it's designed to put some pressure on the NFL to sort of maintain, you know, as many games as it can on as you know, deem necessary or possible on the networks.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't incur any issues from the Department of Justice.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: So I think it's maybe you know almost a deterrent's not the right word, but it's but it's almost a well, wait a second, guys, we're paying attention, so just be careful how you renegotiate your deals.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're looking at you, so do the right thing so we don't have to get involved kind of thing.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: I I think so, but then again, it's the Department of Justice, and you never know.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: You know, you you never know.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And also the Department of Justice could change dramatically in 2028 or the beginning of 2029, you know, so you just you just don't know.
- 28:43unknown: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Now the question I always like to ask, because I'm a journalist at heart is okay, we just talked a bunch of very high-level intellectual mumbo jumbo.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Um, what does that mean for your everyday fan?
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: What does this mean?
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Why does your everyday fan, what does this mean for Joe Schmoe, the everyday Cleveland Browns fan?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: No, it's painful.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: It's painful to figure out where uh where all the games are.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: You know, there they're there's two things that have happened.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: One is that you got to pay for a lot of them, and two is used to be on three, used to be on three networks, now it's on something like 10 or you can watch them in 10 or 11 places, you know?
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, so I think that that's I think that's what the issue is for.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: So if I'm a consumer, the question really becomes when do you reach that point where you create a barrier for the consumer, and he or she says, you know what, I'm just not gonna watch it this week, and I'll wait for the playoffs, or I'm just not gonna watch it this week, and I know there's a Monday night game on, I'll watch that.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know when that happens.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: It may happen.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Great question.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, can that happen to the NFL?
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Because it's so ingrained into so much of society.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: I can see how it could happen to other sports, but could it happen to the NFL?
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: The reason it it's less likely, the answer is probably not, and I think the reason it's less likely to happen in the NFL is just the just the scarcity of product.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: There are just fewer games to watch, and so there isn't a level of saturation.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: I do think though that going to an 18th game, if they end up doing that, might create a little bit of a level of saturation because I don't think the 18th game, uh, based on just injury, uh injury history of players in general, and is I don't think you're gonna see stars playing in some of those games.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: So I think the set I think 17 games is right at the edge.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: I think 18 games kind of encroaches on that scarcity of product idea a little bit.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll get down with that, and here's why.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: The only people asking for the 18th game are billionaire owners.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: They're the only people, it's not the fans, the fans haven't asked for 18th game.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Fans didn't even ask for 17.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Um, the players sure as heck haven't asked for 18.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: It's only billionaire owners trying to put more cash in their already stuffed pockets.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Like, seriously, looking for an 18th game.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Those are the only people looking for it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: And because they're the only people looking for it, you know, people will watch it, but the investment factor is different because we didn't ask for this, and the product doesn't seem to be any good because the NFL is already about attrition.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Like for the most part, the NBA, Major League Baseball, hockey, you get the best team or best teams win most of the time.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Football, man, every year it's oh, they're the healthiest team.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: That's why they won.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Well, but but yeah, I I agree with you, yeah, for sure.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: There's no question about it.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: Another an the a potential way around it is to say that's an 18-game season, but players are only allowed to play in a maximum of 16 of those games.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: So if you're a starting quarterback, you can only start in 16 games.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: That means you have to have a that means you have to have a backup quarterback, uh, you know, that that can actually play.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Again, I'm not sure what that does.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: I think that kind of complicates things, but I do think 17 games is a lot, and it feels to me like the season is too long.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Um and and again, that's just a personal opinion.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: So that may or may not that doesn't really mean that much.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: But the uh I think adding an 18th game creates that level of saturation that that might be what makes you as a fan go, huh?
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: That's a there's a lot of games.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I I I can probably skip a bunch of those now.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Well, uh I think uh I think you're on to something, but I don't think they'll I don't think they'll take the quarterbacks out.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: I think it'll be quarterbacks can play 18, but everybody else has to sit down.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Could be, could be.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Well what whatever, but but the point is that you you limit the number of but again, I you know that creates some there, some of that.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean that creates some strategy and some intrigue.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure that's any good for the game, though, you know, because that basically means no one's gonna play their starters against the Browns, you know, every time, you know.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: So it's so I I don't know how that works.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right, right, exactly.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know how that works, but but I do think that that could be sort of the the that's a crit I think they're at a critical level of is it right the NBA, the players and fans are like shorten the season.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: NHL, players and fans are like, okay, I can see why shortening the season might work.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um baseball, 154 games would probably work a little bit better.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Right now, the most violent, physically demanding sport is like, oh no, let's increase the season.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: And you know, and I think as I'm sorry, as okay, check this out, man.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: As their players are dying.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: Like every week there's an NFL story, somebody in their 50s, that seems very young to me these days, is dropping dead for whatever reason.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: You don't see it like that in baseball, you don't see it like that in basketball, you don't see it like that in hockey, where guys in their 50s just just die, yet they want another game.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: It's it's but yeah, it's it's really uh to me that just I I think that 18th game, which is by the way, is gonna happen, I think, by 2029.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Um, it if the 18th is or is not?
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: I think it is, yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, bro, it's happening.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: It's happening in the next couple years.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Before, but I think it's gonna be but but in any case, in terms of what happens with the, you know, for me, sort of the bottom line around the the NFL uh and the DO the DOJ inquiry into NFL and the antitrust exemption, the bottom line for me is that they're gonna come up with an interim solution that guarantees a certain percentage of games go on the networks.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: That's what I think is gonna happen.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Bottom line for me is anytime the DOJ is looking at you, it ain't no positive.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: I hear you.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: I hear you.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: So you want to talk Ohio State now.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: That's our our favorite topic here.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: The Ohio State spring football game is this weekend.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: You excited?
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Bro, um, you know, I can't lie to y'all.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: No.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, you know, I I will I was wondering if if the spring thing, spring game is still a thing.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and maybe you know, it used to be a big deal.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: It doesn't feel like it's a big deal anymore.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: And maybe it's because you got the transfer portal, and so like why are teams still having to that?
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: Do they need to raise money?
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: Is it a showcase?
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: See, there were see there was a time recently, I don't want anybody playing in spring game because I don't want you jumping in the portal because somebody saw a third linebacker.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: Son, you can't start there, but wow, I love the way you play the spring game.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Right, you can certainly start for me, son.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's uh from an Ohio State point of view, they modified the spring game last year, uh, and only 40,000 fans attended compared to and compared to what it was in 2024, where 80,000 fans attended.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: So I think they've they're reverting to the traditional format this year.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: So uh, and that's more just you know, regular tackling and hitting in like a regular game.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, I I think the spring game is a little bit outdated because often the spring game was used because people were kind of excited to see, hey, we got this really great recruit from so-and-so.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: I've never seen him, but now I can see the highlights, you know, anytime I want in like 85 different platforms.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: So yes, so I think the spring game's a a little bit different.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: I think also the spring game might give fans some indication of which players could be ascending to the first team and which players may be taking, you know, may not be.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: But it's mostly just uh yeah, it's it's a it's uh if you're an Ohio State fan, it's it's the it's another you know, data point in the year that you look forward to and you're excited about and you go to the game.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Is it meaningful?
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: This will determine whether it's meaningful.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: I need to ask my son if he's going.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: And that will determine if it's meaningful.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: I would ask him first, when is the spring game?
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Matter of fact, before that, I'll ask him, do you know if there's a spring game?
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: And then and then based on that answer, I'll ask him if if there is one.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Uh I'll I'll bring documentation on the game.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: I'm actually, I'm actually, you don't know this.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: I'm actually likely gonna be in Columbus this weekend, and I didn't even know there was a spring game.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: The spring game was this weekend.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: So so there you go.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: No, it's a uh it's um I guess I I will probably watch the highlights.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: I would not watch a whole entire spring game.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Um somebody will have some highlights on uh either social media or on uh you know maybe ESPN will roll through and uh shooting.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Now see this is a big I remember when I spent the year in Jackson, 2022, I think, doing a hanging out with Deion Sanders and doing a book on uh his year at Jackson State, his second season.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: ESPN, the man showed up for their spring game and they blew that thing out.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Like they had um now their stadium seats about 65,000.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: But they had like it's that big?
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, I didn't realize that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: They had 50 plus.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Now Jackson State's got the biggest stadium in the HBCU.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah um they had like 50,000 plus at their spring game, and it was a big deal.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Um and so it made sense because it drew a lot of attention to the program and Ashador and Travis Hunter out there.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: So it was a uh it was a significant deal.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Um, so but Ohio State as an established program, uh, you know, you don't want anybody hurt in the spring game, you know.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: So why while you want to give the people a little something to look at, you don't want nobody hurt.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Uh I'll we'll see what the enthusiasm level is for Ohio State this year, because I think the fans are still kind of a little bit the season kind of ended before most fans realized that the season was actually ending.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: It just kind of like it was hype, hype, hype, great, great, great, and then it just kind of fizzled out at the end.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: It kind of didn't really have a a strong ending.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: Are the fans going to be excited to show up for this?
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Are they gonna be subdued?
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Or it'd be I I I think one of the more interesting aspects will be what are the fans like there?
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Are they are they really psyched for this year?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: Are they not?
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Do they should be interesting?
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: They're not the favorites.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: So, you know, Indiana will go into the season being the favorites.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: I think Ohio State is the national title favorite still.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: No.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And some of the and in that may not be as people those people are trying to get clicks.
- 40:26unknown: Right, right.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: There's no way you No, no, I think in I think in some of the I think in some of the sports books, Ohio State's uh the betting favorite right now.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: In sports books that would make sense.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but no.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: Um it'll be interesting to see uh who do you who do you think should be preseason number one?
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Your your Texas Longhorns?
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: They're pretty good, bro.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Uh Texas, Oregon.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: They got their quarterback back.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're always good.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: Um I don't think the Buckeyes are are uh given all the people that they're losing, uh I don't see them as a number one.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: I think probably Texas.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: I do Texas is good.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or uh let me say this uh paper Texas is really good.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: I still I I gotta see it from Arch.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: I don't believe in him yet.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: Um I think here's what it is.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: He looks like a pretty good quarterback to me.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: He doesn't look like this this game changer that we were sold.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Now maybe he will be this year, but uh he can really run.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: What he can't do is throw with any kind of consistency.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Well, he's got his accuracy is not that great, you know.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: No, so if they, you know, if if they just let him play, he'd probably be a better player.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: Because go back, look, you don't see it, because he's got wheels for real.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, he can he can run.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, they're so hey, stay back here, be a pocket passer, da da da, that by the time he decides to run, you know, you get three yards instead of 20.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: So, you know, but is it trying to develop him?
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: Texas is gonna be really good this year.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, they were really good last year.
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I think I think the Buckeyes will be right at the edge of getting in the playoff or not.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: That's where I think their season is this year.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: If they're right on the edge, then they're in.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Of course they are.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course they are.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Ohio State or they won't be guaranteed like Notre Dame is if they make that, you know, if they're ranked in the top 12.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: But but but Ohio State is a television draw, and uh everybody wants to see them.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: Bottom line for me, if my son knows there's a spring game, I'll turn it down and take a peek.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Uh bottom line for me, yeah.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: I'll probably watch the highlights, and I think I'll probably forget about it about an hour after I watch the highlights.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: Uh so hey, uh, don't forget to subscribe.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Great review.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Five stars only.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, we'll take it kind of personally.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's Jeremy Pink, Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: This has been the bottom line on sports.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: We'll talk with you next week.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: All right, we'll see you next week, everybody.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
