Latest / The Gathering Line / Pipeline Bottlenecks at Guernsey and Shifting Rockies Flows
Transcript
- 0:00Friday, October ninth.
- 0:01Here's what moved since Thursday's close, and what it means for Rockies and Bakken
- 0:06flows.
- 0:07Global first.
- 0:08Brent is down about one percent overnight, roughly a hundred and three dollars and
- 0:12thirty cents.
- 0:13That's off Thursday's settle of a hundred and four twenty eight,
- 0:16and Thursday's intraday high of a hundred and five seventeen.
- 0:20The trigger, per the twenty two V overnight briefing, was a statement that the
- 0:23United States will not strike Iran before the November midterms.
- 0:28Other reports say the military was told to prepare for a possible resumption,
- 0:31so treat this as headline relief, not a change in supply.
- 0:35And the offsets are live.
- 0:37Houthi strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid airport killed three and grounded flights.
- 0:42The group also claims a hit on Aramco's Rabigh refinery.
- 0:45That's a claim, and I haven't seen confirmed damage.
- 0:48Treasury sanctioned seventeen shadow fleet tankers.
- 0:51Brent has been working a ninety six to a hundred and ten range for a month,
- 0:55and nothing overnight breaks it.
- 0:57OPEC plus, nothing new.
- 0:59November production baselines stand.
- 1:01The provisional hundred and eighty thousand barrel per day December increment is
- 1:05still contingent on Iraqi and Kazakh compensation cuts.
- 1:08And the IEA talk of a hundred million barrel coordinated stock release remains
- 1:12unformalized.
- 1:14Discussion, not a decision.
- 1:16North America.
- 1:17Western Canadian Select at Hardisty is still deeply discounted,
- 1:20about sixteen dollars and sixty five cents under W T I, with fall turnarounds in the
- 1:25Midwest doing the damage.
- 1:27Canadian export pipes are around ninety three percent utilized,
- 1:30which leaves roughly three hundred and fifty thousand barrels per day of headroom.
- 1:34Enbridge's Express into Casper is fully booked at its two hundred and eighty
- 1:38thousand barrel per day nameplate.
- 1:40Trans Mountain is steady near sixty percent.
- 1:43One thing to watch: winter condensate blending requirements will squeeze effective
- 1:47heavy takeaway as we head into November.
- 1:49Mexico's Maya export curtailments are unchanged.
- 1:52United States.
- 1:54W T I front month is around ninety dollars and sixty seven cents,
- 1:58down from ninety two seventy two Thursday, tracking Brent lower.
- 2:02The Brent W T I spread widened to twelve dollars and sixty three cents from twelve
- 2:06forty six.
- 2:07A double digit spread like that keeps pulling inland barrels toward Gulf Coast
- 2:11export docks, and hold that thought for Guernsey.
- 2:14No new E I A print since Wednesday, so the backdrop stands.
- 2:18Commercial crude drew three point one eight six million barrels to four hundred
- 2:21twenty four point one three million.
- 2:24Cushing built four hundred and forty thousand to twenty four point seven million,
- 2:27still one point eight four million under the five year seasonal average.
- 2:31The Midwest built one point eight seven two million to a hundred and six point nine
- 2:35eight million on turnarounds.
- 2:37The Rockies drew a hundred and forty four thousand to twenty two point three five
- 2:40million.
- 2:41The Gulf Coast drew three point eight nine eight million.
- 2:44Refinery utilization is ninety two point seven percent.
- 2:48The Baker Hughes count comes at noon Central.
- 2:50Last week's was four fifty six oil rigs, up one, with total rigs at five ninety
- 2:55eight, down one.
- 2:57Uinta Basin.
- 2:58Yellow wax is trading at an indicative ten to fourteen dollars under W T I at the
- 3:03wellhead, and I'd stress indicative.
- 3:05Gulf Coast refiners are bidding an indicative premium of about three twenty over W T
- 3:10I for wax, for the lube and low sulfur yield.
- 3:13Here's the problem.
- 3:14Spot crude by rail in coiled, insulated cars runs sixteen to eighteen dollars a
- 3:18barrel.
- 3:19Set a three twenty premium against that freight and you're twelve eighty to fourteen
- 3:23eighty a barrel in the hole versus selling locally.
- 3:26So rail stays confined to term contracted baseline volumes.
- 3:30The local cap is Salt Lake City, five refineries, about two hundred and five
- 3:34thousand barrels per day total, and roughly eighty thousand barrels per day of
- 3:37capacity for waxy crude.
- 3:39The Uinta Basin Railway is still stalled after the D.C.
- 3:41Circuit remand.
- 3:43The Surface Transportation Board supplemental review and Forest Service right of way
- 3:47approvals are pending.
- 3:49The two point two to two point five billion dollar private financing is unfinalized,
- 3:55with no construction.
- 3:57Operators including Crescent Point, Veren, Ovintiv, Scout, XCL,
- 4:02Uinta Wax, Berry, Caerus and SM Energy are holding steady on contracted development.
- 4:09Bakken.
- 4:11Output holds near one point one four million barrels per day in North Dakota,
- 4:15with the Williston total around one point one nine to one point two million.
- 4:19Ninety seven point four percent comes from the Bakken and Three Forks.
- 4:23Statewide gas capture is ninety five point five percent, even with a gas to oil
- 4:27ratio of three point zero nine M C F per barrel.
- 4:31Long laterals, three to four miles, are sixty three percent of new completions.
- 4:36Dakota Access is running near full, so negligible spot space south.
- 4:41Kinder Morgan's conversion of the eighty eight thousand barrel per day Double H line
- 4:45to N G L service keeps pulling crude capacity out of the region and pushes
- 4:49incremental volumes toward Bridger's Belle Fourche system.
- 4:53Steel Reef's F E R C application to export unprocessed North Dakota gas into
- 4:57Saskatchewan is still pending.
- 5:00Rail to coastal refineries runs ten to fifteen dollars a barrel,
- 5:03so it's legacy firm agreements only.
- 5:06Chord, Hess and Chevron, Devon and Grayson Mill, and ConocoPhillips report steady
- 5:11operations.
- 5:12Hess Midstream is targeting at least five percent volume growth in the second half.
- 5:17Powder River Basin.
- 5:19Anschutz, Continental, Devon, EOG and Peak are steady, no interruptions.
- 5:25With Double H leaving crude service, egress leans on local gathering and the Bridger
- 5:29and Belle Fourche interconnects into Guernsey.
- 5:31Plains continues folding the Silver Creek Midstream assets,
- 5:34a five hundred and eighty five million dollar acquisition, into Guernsey delivery
- 5:38headers.
- 5:40Now Guernsey, which is pronounced GERN zee, and the part that matters most.
- 5:44Light sweet is firm at about eighty five cents over W T I Cushing.
- 5:48Clearbrook trades at a discount to Guernsey of a dollar fifty to two ten.
- 5:52Both unchanged over the last twenty four hours.
- 5:55Those are desk indications, not published settlements.
- 5:58The story is space, not price.
- 6:00Pony Express, about four hundred and thirty thousand barrels per day to Cushing,
- 6:04and Platte, a hundred and forty five thousand to Wood River and Patoka,
- 6:08are both severely apportioned.
- 6:10With Brent W T I at twelve sixty three pulling barrels to the Gulf Coast,
- 6:14pipeline capacity is trading at a premium to uncommitted barrels sitting in tanks.
- 6:19On tariffs, Bridger's recent filing provides interim capacity moving more than two
- 6:24hundred and fifty thousand barrels per day from the Bakken into Wyoming while it
- 6:28evaluates downstream expansions of up to two hundred thousand.
- 6:31The Tallgrass and Bridger open season closed in early twenty twenty five,
- 6:35and Bridger's proposed five hundred and fifty thousand barrel per day Canada to
- 6:39Guernsey line is a long term concept, not a project.
- 6:43So what's a Guernsey shipper choosing?
- 6:45One, take proration on Pony or Platte and reach Gulf Coast export margins.
- 6:50Even after volume cuts, that's the best realized netback, which is why the space is
- 6:54contested.
- 6:55Two, sell east into Clearbrook at that one fifty to two ten discount,
- 6:59into a Midwest already long one point eight seven two million barrels on
- 7:03turnarounds.
- 7:04Three, rail at ten to fifteen dollars a barrel, which wipes out the arbitrage.
- 7:09Rationing of pipe, not molecule pricing, is the friction to bring to your call.
- 7:13That's the brief.
- 7:14Rig count at noon Central.
