- 1:06Other Alcoholics are chiefs of Brady.
- 1:09Thank you to my Home group for having me.
- 1:11I'm John. I'm alcoholic formalities.
- 1:16This is my Home group. I am a I'm a relatively new
- 1:19member but it's definitely been a massive shift for my recovery
- 1:22being here. I have a sponsor, I've worked
- 1:24through the steps and I try and apply them to my life to the
- 1:27best of my ability. And I have a sobriety date which
- 1:30is the 24th of the 7th 2022. I turned 3 last week.
- 1:39I had a really lengthy phone call with my grand sponsor on
- 1:43Monday afternoon after my sponsor had been suggesting for
- 1:45two weeks that I call my grand sponsor.
- 1:47And I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll get around to it.
- 1:49Two weeks later, I finally took the suggestion, and it changed
- 1:51my perspective entirely. But he noted that, you know, the
- 1:57statistics for turning 3 are so low, not many people make it to
- 2:02this point. And, you know, getting here is
- 2:05definitely felt like that. That first 12 months of sobriety
- 2:08felt like I was fighting for my life every single day.
- 2:11And then I got there and it felt like the longest year of my
- 2:13life. And then I got to 2 and I
- 2:15thought that I knew everything in the world and that I was
- 2:17cured. And now I've just hit three and
- 2:20I realized that I know absolutely nothing.
- 2:22And that's such a humbling, wonderful place to be.
- 2:26I've learnt so much in three years, but three years is really
- 2:29no time at all. And it was also reminded, you
- 2:33know, I'm, I'm not a baby anymore and I'm a toddler now.
- 2:35And so all of the emotions that I've experienced in the last
- 2:38couple of weeks when everything did not go as I had planned are
- 2:43also on point for a three-year old because I haven't really got
- 2:47a handle on the emotion thing yet.
- 2:49But I'm working on it. You know, it's progress, not
- 2:51perfection. I, I was supposed to go away in
- 2:57the like 2 1/2 weeks ago. I go back to work tomorrow, but
- 3:00I got really sick and God had other plans for me.
- 3:02Even though it was a God-given holiday, God took it away really
- 3:04quickly as well. And at the time I was really
- 3:07disappointed about it. But this afternoon I got a book
- 3:09back that I lent to somebody because since being in recovery,
- 3:13I've, I read a lot of poetry about God.
- 3:16I love other people's conceptions of God and the way
- 3:18that they talk about their God and what that means to them.
- 3:20But somebody gave me back one of my favorite books and I was
- 3:23flicking through it in the car and this little thing popped up.
- 3:25But I just, it's not a literature, but it's funny.
- 3:30One second, please. I was sitting in the car and I
- 3:35opened it and it said a great pilgrimage.
- 3:38I felt in need of a great pilgrimage.
- 3:40So I sat still for three days and God came to me.
- 3:44I was going to go and chase angels in caves and, you know,
- 3:48in holy places. And actually at the end of 2 1/2
- 3:52weeks, I've had a massive shift inside.
- 3:54And I, I can't really put any words to that.
- 3:56But my sponsor kept saying on the other side of this, all of
- 3:59this stuff that's happening, like you will be different and
- 4:02you will be changed. And two weeks ago, I couldn't
- 4:04see it. You know, I was so in my jar and
- 4:07I was so pickled and I just couldn't.
- 4:10Everything felt wrong and nothing felt right and nothing
- 4:12was going to plan. And now 2 1/2 weeks later,
- 4:15everything is settled and, and I'm not sick anymore and, and I
- 4:19can finally sort of see the forest for the trees, you know,
- 4:21and I really, I don't know what the shift is, but I feel so much
- 4:26softer. I've had like several really big
- 4:28surrenders in the last few weeks.
- 4:31And I thought that like, you know, I had a really good
- 4:34understanding of my God and my faith and all of that.
- 4:37But actually like the more pain that I've been in the last few
- 4:41weeks has just like pushed me closer and closer to my, to my
- 4:44God, whatever that is. And yeah, I didn't have any of
- 4:50that before recovery. Before recovery, I just like, I
- 4:53couldn't stop drinking and all I wanted to do was die.
- 4:56I didn't know how to live. I didn't know how to live with
- 4:59it. I didn't know how to live
- 4:59without it, especially in the end, you know, three years ago I
- 5:03was still in the hospital waiting to be transferred to
- 5:05Adelaide Clinic after a serious suicide attempt.
- 5:07It was my second coma of 2022. And the doctors said like that
- 5:12it was medically unexplainable how I was alive.
- 5:15But, you know, it's definitely a good job.
- 5:18And when I look back at my life now, throughout all of my
- 5:20drinking and the way that I lived, I know that there was so
- 5:23many of them. You know, there are people in
- 5:25this room that have dragged me out of gutters and thrown me
- 5:27into hospitals when I've needed it and stuff.
- 5:29And I just don't live like that today.
- 5:32You know, that was only three years ago.
- 5:34And today I have like, at 2 years sober, I opened my own
- 5:37business, which was also just a gift from God.
- 5:39And at the moment, it's the only thing that hasn't really been
- 5:41stripped back. And I know that that's because
- 5:43it is a gift and that God will show me how to make it work for
- 5:48me. You know, like everything that
- 5:50the business has given me has been nothing to do with the
- 5:53things that you would think. Like I thought I would open a
- 5:55shop and, and learn how to run a business.
- 5:57And that happened really quickly.
- 5:58But actually what God is teaching me in there is like how
- 6:01to have boundaries and how to look after myself.
- 6:04And it had like God's given me this space where I can love and
- 6:07nurture people the way that I know that I can.
- 6:09And I could never do that before recovery.
- 6:11I was so selfish, you know, I just, I think like I've always
- 6:16probably been a love bug but never really knew how to tap
- 6:19into that because I just like didn't understand the world and
- 6:22it felt so excruciating and I didn't know how to be here.
- 6:25I didn't know how to be anywhere.
- 6:28I just like, I don't know. I hear people talk about their
- 6:31drinking and they say they drank so that they could connect, but
- 6:33I drank so that I could disconnect because I always felt
- 6:36too in touch with everything, you know, but like another gift
- 6:40of my recoveries in my recovery, I, you know, I started
- 6:44defrosting and I started getting to know myself a little bit
- 6:46more. And, and I did get an autism
- 6:49assessment done last year and I've got a big tick of approval
- 6:52for that. So like, I'm definitely like,
- 6:55I'm an autistic alcoholic person trying to learn how to be in the
- 6:58world now. But the more that I know about
- 7:00myself, the more like it just keeps unfolding, you know?
- 7:05But yeah, gift from God was definitely my shop.
- 7:08And it hasn't been taken away yet, but lots of things have
- 7:11been stripped back in the last few weeks.
- 7:12You know, I was supposed to go on holiday, but I had to say
- 7:15goodbye to my to one of my favoritest little pals in the
- 7:19whole world. I just spent 15 years with this
- 7:20weird, raggedy old little cat and I had to hold her and, and
- 7:24be, you know, show her how to go to the other side.
- 7:28And like, if that's not a spiritual experience, I don't
- 7:30know what is. So like, there's been so much
- 7:32pain and so much laughter and, and so much crying all in 2 1/2
- 7:36weeks. And I've definitely fallen out
- 7:37of it, like a different person on the other side.
- 7:40But that was promised to me. You know, I've been thinking
- 7:43about Arthur a lot actually in the last few weeks.
- 7:45When you say that, you know, if you don't have any problems,
- 7:48then God's forgotten about you. So I've felt really blessed in
- 7:51the last few weeks by all of my problems.
- 7:54So, you know, it's like everything that gets said in
- 7:58these rooms ripples into it, into all of us, right?
- 8:00Like, we leave different after every meeting.
- 8:03And sometimes that's for the better and sometimes it can be
- 8:06for the worse. And there's nothing worse than
- 8:07when you're in a really bad way and like, you know, recovery or
- 8:11like a meeting doesn't hit or like you're just not hearing
- 8:13what you need to. But it's in those moments that
- 8:15you like really have to turn inward and go to that thing that
- 8:18is bigger than you because like, no human power can relieve me of
- 8:21my alcoholism. I definitely have noted my
- 8:27powerlessness over the last few weeks, especially, you know,
- 8:31like it's so obvious when I, when you first get in and like
- 8:34step one, we admit we were powerless over alcohol that our
- 8:37lives have become unmanageable. And like, I am 100% powerless
- 8:41over alcohol and I'm powerless over lots of things.
- 8:44But you know, having that real surrender, like how powerless I
- 8:47am over life this week or this last few weeks has been really
- 8:53gut punching. But yeah, I don't know.
- 8:58I just, I had a big cry. I have done nothing but cry.
- 9:05But I had a big cry yesterday. I sort of somebody sent me
- 9:09something and it just says something along the lines of
- 9:11like, I have things today that I used to pray for and that is so
- 9:15true. You know, all I've done is sort
- 9:16of focus on like all the stuff that I don't that has been like
- 9:20taken away or whatever and been real pity party about it, even
- 9:23though it sucks. But like I, I, when you bring it
- 9:25back to like the real basics, like today, I'm a sober person
- 9:28and I get to walk through the world with my head up high and
- 9:31I'm accountable. I can rock up, I can show up,
- 9:34come to my Home group. I put out chairs.
- 9:36You know, like Once Upon a time who I was would like never have
- 9:39cared about anything like that. And now it's like 1 of the
- 9:41lights of my life to sit out there and take everybody's names
- 9:44and give you all a hug and ask how you are.
- 9:46And you know, like things have happened to me since coming to
- 9:51these rooms. The person that finally 12 step
- 9:55me sits next to me tonight as well.
- 9:58And like my family had tried so long because I come from a
- 10:03really long line of like crazy Alcoholics, but just couldn't
- 10:07hear it until I was ready. But that last little, that last
- 10:10little bit, that last drink, just absolutely over the edge.
- 10:14You know, it was like gates of insanity or death.
- 10:17And I was at Bose, but I wouldn't die.
- 10:20And so I finally could hear it, the message, you know, that
- 10:23there was a solution for me. There was a solution for my
- 10:26living problem. I don't keep coming back here
- 10:29because I have a drinking problem.
- 10:30I keep coming back because I have a thinking problem.
- 10:33I keep coming back because I have a living problem and I need
- 10:36a solution for how to be in the world.
- 10:39And it's in the steps, it's in the traditions and the promises
- 10:43have come true in my life. Like I have proof of God in me,
- 10:47in my life, in the people near me.
- 10:51Like the ripple effect of my recovery into like into the
- 10:54rooms and then outside of the rooms is, is so huge and it's so
- 10:58beautiful. But like you sort of miss it.
- 11:00You know, you get so wrapped up in, in life and in living this
- 11:05really good life that you sort of forget what it was like.
- 11:07But I went to my first Home group before I was here tonight
- 11:11just because it didn't feel right not celebrating with them.
- 11:14And there was there was a newcomer there and I'd answered
- 11:18his call and, you know, I'd said to him on the phone, I'll meet
- 11:21you. Like this was months ago and I
- 11:23didn't even remember it. But he he said that he told the
- 11:25story tonight and he said that I'd use the word magic.
- 11:29You know, you have to come in. I'll meet you out the front.
- 11:32Magic happens in here. And that's exactly what happens,
- 11:36you know, in like 4 1/2 months later.
- 11:38He was sitting in that meeting this afternoon, still sober.
- 11:40And like you, you just forget about the phone calls and you
- 11:44forget about the people whose hands that you shake because,
- 11:47yeah, you just get wrapped up in it all.
- 11:48But like, there's nothing short of a miracle what happens in
- 11:52here. Even when you don't think that
- 11:55it's working, it's still working.
- 11:58Like I'm blessed to live this free life today because I kept
- 12:02coming back and I did the suggested things.
- 12:05Even though at three years sober, I still wait two weeks to
- 12:08do the suggested things. And of course, they always work
- 12:12because I'm alcoholic and I will be every single day.
- 12:16But thankfully, today I have a daily reprieve.
- 12:19You know, I know what's wrong with me.
- 12:21And I know I know what will help.
- 12:23And generally what will help is helping other Alcoholics.
- 12:26I have a primary purpose. And all I looked for all my life
- 12:31was a purpose. What's the point?
- 12:32What's the point? What's the point?
- 12:33There can be no God. It doesn't make any sense.
- 12:37And within three years, like, well, I think all I talk about
- 12:42really, or all I really want to talk about is God.
- 12:44And like, I do have a purpose today.
- 12:46It's it's wild. I do like, I have a pretty
- 12:51strict morning routine, although it's been pretty LAX the last
- 12:54few weeks, but I would definitely like I wake up and
- 12:57the first thing that I say is God.
- 12:58And then I do my morning prayer. I do a lot of reading, many
- 13:03readings in the mornings and I do my morning meditation and I
- 13:06get about my day and at night time, I thank God for another
- 13:08safe and sober day. And I do my night meditation
- 13:10and, you know, it's all of that stuff that keeps me running
- 13:14well. I do a minimum of three meetings
- 13:15a week and that's a good maintenance amount.
- 13:17I just like this has to be the base of my life for everything
- 13:22else to work. And I know when I've stayed away
- 13:25for too long that like everything starts falling apart.
- 13:29I'm really grateful to be here and really grateful to the group
- 13:31for having me share. And I'm so grateful that I
- 13:34haven't got in my life today because like, it is not of me to
- 13:38have stayed sober in the last few weeks.
- 13:41At the beginning of the year, I, I really got very honest and,
- 13:44and I used the steps to give up cigarettes.
- 13:47But on Fri, on Sunday night, I had AI don't care moment and I,
- 13:50I bought a pack of the cigarettes.
- 13:51I lit 1 and I couldn't even finish it because, you know,
- 13:54like that's something that I prayed for, right?
- 13:55And God has taken away from me and now the obsession is removed
- 13:58and like, it no longer serves me.
- 14:00I have to find the other things. And that's like just pushes me
- 14:03more closer, closer, closer into the sunlight of the Spirit and
- 14:08closer to God. And yeah, I really hope that I
- 14:10get to do this thing for the rest of my life, but it's just
- 14:13for today, 1 foot in front of the other.
- 14:15And like, I really have to remember to keep it simple.
- 14:18So thank you so much for asking me to share.
- 14:21A A has more than two million recovering Alcoholics throughout
- 14:25the world. In Australia there are about
- 14:2818,000 members. They're made in over 2000 local
- 14:33meetings spread around the country.
- 14:36Meetings range in size from a handful in some areas to
- 14:40hundreds or more in larger communities.
- 14:43And once again, if anyone you know is struggling with alcohol
- 14:48issues, please call Alcoholics Announcing 1300 Double 00000 or
