Former Brazoria County deputy Kevin Tippit has been indicted on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault by a public servant after fatally shooting 18-year-old John Gabriel Mendoza Jr. during a high-speed chase in Lake Jackson. The incident, which occurred just after midnight on June 1, ended when Mendoza crashed into a garage and was shot by Tippit as he approached the vehicle. Mendoza, a beloved freshman at Texas State University with his life ahead of him, died at the hospital.
