- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the You Got Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: have Dan Hurley with us. I'm Mike Crispino. Our second
- 0:06Speaker 1: get together. Previously we met in front of a live
- 0:09Speaker 1: studio audience in Hartford at Diehart Headquarters. Now we get
- 0:13Speaker 1: coach after practice, uh, leading up to the opener with
- 0:17Speaker 1: New Haven on Monday at Gamble Pavilion. So, Dan, let's
- 0:22Speaker 1: kind of recap what you've seen. And I know you've
- 0:24Speaker 1: been at this a long time in the summer, in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the fall, and now you're getting close to playing real games.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Do you look for improvement in a in a group
- 0:35Speaker 1: of players as you move through this whole process?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I you know, it's it's funny how
- 0:40Speaker 3: we do these shows, and it's like based on you know,
- 0:43Speaker 3: however the last practice went. You know, we're live, we're live,
- 0:47Speaker 3: and you know we're taping here as soon as I'm
- 0:50Speaker 3: literally walking off the practice court. So you're going to
- 0:52Speaker 3: get usually my reaction to what just happened, which I'm
- 0:57Speaker 3: coming in so I'm coming in hot today. But I
- 1:00Speaker 3: would say that, Yeah, I mean, you're you're all you're
- 1:03Speaker 3: looking for is at this time of year, is improvement?
- 1:07Speaker 3: You know, like the team is so far away from
- 1:09Speaker 3: where you need the team to be offense, defense, discipline, fundamentals. Uh,
- 1:19Speaker 3: you know this, you know, like utilizing their skills, I
- 1:22Speaker 3: mean just timing, understanding your role, you know, conditioning, you know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: the body to be able to you know, practicing is
- 1:30Speaker 3: one thing, but you know game minutes are a lot
- 1:32Speaker 3: different than practice minutes, so you know there's a different
- 1:36Speaker 3: stress level that you play with on game nights, so
- 1:39Speaker 3: that there's so many things happening.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Uh. You know with the team, there's things you're experimenting.
- 1:46Speaker 3: With, with your rotation with with things you're implementing.
- 1:52Speaker 4: But in the end, all you have this time of
- 1:55Speaker 4: year up through really March is getting better.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah. It leads to the question about exhibitions. You had
- 2:05Speaker 1: two of them. Public people came over twenty thousand people
- 2:10Speaker 1: came to those two games against Boston College and Michigan State.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Has that helped in a way in the sense that
- 2:17Speaker 1: previously did these secret scrimmages and you played against good
- 2:20Speaker 1: teams as well, But you know this time this year,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you're in front of you know, your fans, Husky Nation
- 2:27Speaker 1: is right there.
- 2:28Speaker 2: They want to see what's going on too.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean nothing but positive.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And you know, to be able to be able to
- 2:35Speaker 3: have a simulate you know, somewhat of a road trip
- 2:39Speaker 3: by going to Mohegan and staying there and playing you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: an acc team, and then you know, being able to
- 2:47Speaker 3: get a second one, you know versus you know one
- 2:50Speaker 3: of the programs that you try to emulate. You know
- 2:53Speaker 3: tom Izo, you know Michigan State Spartan Spartans who you know,
- 2:58Speaker 3: they test you physically, and I think they exposed some areas.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You know, with a rebounding lack of physicality, you'll get exposed,
- 3:08Speaker 3: so the vulnerabilities get exposed, and then the players get
- 3:11Speaker 3: some of those opening night jitters. Uh so opening night
- 3:15Speaker 3: is not going to feel like Opening Night. Opening Night
- 3:17Speaker 3: for us is going to feel like Game three.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's a good that's a good way to
- 3:22Speaker 1: look at it. You can to start the season top
- 3:25Speaker 1: ten for now three straight years, second in the preseason
- 3:28Speaker 1: Big East predictions. How in your career and you've been
- 3:32Speaker 1: around doing this for a bit, how accurate is that stuff?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Because I always look at I read all the magazines,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I read all the you know, various websites.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Who says what about this?
- 3:42Speaker 1: And you know, I probably know our team better than
- 3:44Speaker 1: most of the other teams.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But how do you view that because I don't know.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I think people are just blindly picking things when they
- 3:52Speaker 1: look at preseason predictions.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I don't you know. Let's use it
- 3:59Speaker 4: for what you need it at the time. I mean
- 4:01Speaker 4: as a coach. You know, if you.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Feel like your program at the time needs it as motivation,
- 4:08Speaker 3: then you use it as motivation.
- 4:10Speaker 4: If you you know, it's a.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Pretty monotonous, uh, daily grind of practice and drills and
- 4:17Speaker 3: video and you know it. So yeah, I mean, you
- 4:20Speaker 3: you've got over the course of that time with the team,
- 4:24Speaker 3: use whatever things you can to create you know, extra
- 4:27Speaker 3: motivation or or energy or inspiration.
- 4:31Speaker 4: But I mean they're meaningless.
- 4:33Speaker 3: You know, you use it when you need it, but
- 4:35Speaker 3: for the most part, you're never thinking about it.
- 4:38Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Obviously at the end of the year, the media, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 3: for the most part, you know they're there. There there's
- 4:44Speaker 3: a lot of fair media, but then there's a lot
- 4:46Speaker 3: of you know, there's a lot of you know media
- 4:50Speaker 3: that you know that that's not really fair. You know,
- 4:56Speaker 3: So when you do have a chance and you're unranked
- 4:58Speaker 3: in twenty three, and you want to dominate the instantly tournament,
- 5:02Speaker 3: uh in historic fashion. Then you'll use it and say,
- 5:07Speaker 3: you know the media didn't have us ranked. Look we
- 5:09Speaker 3: wanted that to so use it for what you needed for.
- 5:13Speaker 1: That's a perfect example too, because you know, the season starts.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Things happened, you know, last year was Maui and the
- 5:20Speaker 1: collapse there. Three losses. You had to you know, climb
- 5:23Speaker 1: back out of that. Liam McNeely being hurt.
- 5:26Speaker 2: For so long. It was hard.
- 5:28Speaker 4: It was a tough.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Season last year to climb, you know, back up into
- 5:32Speaker 1: the nca tournament. You did it, got to the second
- 5:35Speaker 1: second round there and I know you're, you know, not
- 5:38Speaker 1: happy with the final result. But in a quick look
- 5:41Speaker 1: back at what happened last year and what you need
- 5:44Speaker 1: to do to improve on.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It this year, what did you learn from.
- 5:47Speaker 1: That whole experience last year with the Huskies trying to
- 5:51Speaker 1: defend a national championship.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I mean, I would say for myself, you're thinking, I
- 5:57Speaker 3: just I've got to stay focused on just coach and
- 6:00Speaker 3: the team, you know, like just be able to turn
- 6:03Speaker 3: off more of that external noise and you know, just
- 6:08Speaker 3: stay you know, just stay focused on you know what
- 6:12Speaker 3: I need to do, which is just to get to
- 6:14Speaker 3: get the team as good as I can get the team,
- 6:17Speaker 3: you know, and then enjoy that aspect for myself, of
- 6:21Speaker 3: of of of coaching players I love to coach, and
- 6:24Speaker 3: like last year, I feel like I got distracted at
- 6:27Speaker 3: times too much by you know, uh, you know, the
- 6:31Speaker 3: external noise or even the just the frustration of the
- 6:34Speaker 3: team not being where I wanted them to be. So
- 6:37Speaker 3: from my own standpoint, I evaluate that as a leader
- 6:39Speaker 3: first and then second, you know, the defense, the rebounding,
- 6:44Speaker 3: you know, the in the Michigan State you know, exhibition game,
- 6:48Speaker 3: the I mean the free throw rebounds that we gave
- 6:51Speaker 3: up on the defensive glass were just kind of scary
- 6:55Speaker 3: signs of some of the some of the softness you
- 6:59Speaker 3: know from last year year's team, you know. So uh,
- 7:03Speaker 3: I mean that that's where your your that's where your
- 7:05Speaker 3: mind is, you know, like perimeter defense, rebounding, toughness, the
- 7:10Speaker 3: things that caused us last year to not be successful,
- 7:14Speaker 3: you know, is what you're like so focused on this
- 7:16Speaker 3: team with and it showed it's it showed up the
- 7:19Speaker 3: other night by foiling a lot and by not being
- 7:21Speaker 3: able to rebound free throw misses, all.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Right, Dane Hurley willis back after a quick time out.
- 7:27Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on lear Field.
