- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hey everybody.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Off to our second shot at 8-Minute Mind Shift for the New Year 2019.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: What I want to do today, and maybe it'll bleed over for the next few weeks, is uh I just want to share some some pretty personal stuff.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Uh as Colleen and I have uh started our year and kind of moved into uh you know, we kind of use the the flip of year, the the transition from year to year as a kind of a um you know appraisal, uh re revisiting, reflecting, projecting into the future.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: What what do we feel like this year's gonna be about?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: What do we want to work on?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: What do we feel like you know are the things God wants to accomplish and areas of focus and all?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: So so you know, we're kind of trucking along, you know, even last year in the fall, and you know, we're thinking about what this next season of our life is uh you know gonna be about.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I mean, crazy stuff.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, my wife and I both qualify for Medicare now, which if in case you don't know, that basically means you've turned 65.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So we're both 65 now, and uh feel like God has made it clear that we um, you know, we're not finished, we've got more to do, and um, and we're very, very excited about that.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we get dreaming and thinking and kind of crunching thoughts and numbers and and uh because you know how it is, life it all kind of rolls together, the the who's, the how much, the where's.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Um so we're we're we're cruising along.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Have a great holiday season, other than you know, my getting that crazy bronchitis that I mentioned last week.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: But um we're cruising along and we're we're probably spending a lot of time thinking about you know what we feel like we need to do this year, where we need to focus, and and um how you know what do we need to have to make that work, and all this kind of thing.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And um the interesting thing about the bronchitis is, and you know, most of you, if you know me, you know my theology about healing and health and all that and the goodness of God and all.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I don't necessarily think God's engineers sickness and all that, but uh it doesn't mean he can't use it occasionally.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And um we just feel like it's been really, really good that I was kind of on my back, you might say, not literally, um, as we started the year.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Um because kind of if I was going to title my the the message, the the thought this morning, and maybe going into uh like I said, it might bleed over in the next couple of weeks, but uh I would say this, you know, you've heard the phrase, you know, don't just sit there, do something.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I I would say to you, uh, and and I and I I I beg you to please hear me.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Um I would challenge you, beg you, uh please reverse it.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Don't just do something, sit there.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Don't just do something, sit there.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And here's what I mean.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I feel like God, you know, I I I was immobilized in the sense of acting on anything that was in our hearts.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: I couldn't, I couldn't really make calls, I couldn't even go to the office, I couldn't, I mean, I was just a mess for a little while there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: But my wife and I had great times with God.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We're we're doing 21 days at the church, and we would get online and hang in there with it, and it's been awesome.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've just got some great people that are sharing, and and just little pieces of the puzzle that maybe we hadn't really seen or thought about.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You know, this this whole this whole thing, this whole thing we're doing together, um, you know, uh eight-minute mind shift, it it's boiled around that if something out here is not going the way you think it should, you probably need to look in here, here and here for the issue.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we're cooking along thinking about what what we think God wants to do this year, and and and I just I feel this sense of pressure, this lack of peacefulness, this lack of um, yes, a sense of expectation that God was going to do some stuff, but with this sense of pressure that I just it just I couldn't shake it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, as we just kind of sat before God and and and and listened, talked, we talk a lot, thank God for my awesome wife.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And um I really, you know, I've told you before that I believe we all have a Goliath issue.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't remember if you you you would have heard me talk about that, but I believe we all have an issue from some point in our life, usually in the past, childhood-ish, that um Goliath, you know, head and shoulders above all the rest.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And and if you defeat Goliath, all the other enemies are easier.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: In other words, this is a strategically important issue, and I believe it's important for each of us to what I call name your Goliath.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And um I feel like you know, we're we're trucking along, doing our best to keep our hearts in the right place and make our plans uh in, you know, from a healthy place.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, and I could tell you all different little wrinkles of how God, you know, messes with us and all this, but but uh I was I can't remember exactly what triggered it, but I was praying or hanging, Colleen and I hanging with God, and this thought just kind of rose up.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And and here's what I heard in my heart.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I'm I am a disappointment to people.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I am a disappointment to people.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And when I heard it, I realized what?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And I realized, you know, I I've kind of drifted back to believing that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Um you know, my Goliath had to do with my father, and it centered around just uh, you know, just feeling like I just I just wasn't what he wanted, you know.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And again, a lot of it was his inability to per uh communicate affection and encouragement, that kind of thing.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I know you know he loved me and all that.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And the bottom line is he he was very proud of me.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: But the but the point is, growing up, I felt like I was a disappointment to him.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So here I am now, like I said a few minutes ago, 65, and I'm finding, you know, Colleen and I are trying to figure out our next season and what's going on and whatever.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And and I know, and I and I sense that I haven't been myself, uh, and there's lots of reasons for that, you know.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, some health challenges in 2016 and whatever, but somehow that thing had crept back in and taken root again.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And and and when that thought hit me, when I heard that phrase, and when I realized that my heart was saying, Chipper, that you've heard me say this before: whoever's words define you is your God, whoever's words define you is your god, and I realized that phrase was defining me to me.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: That phrase was defining me to me.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: I'm a disappointment, and the fruit of it was um overstretching, over-projecting, uh uh intensified insecurities, intensified sensitivities to people, their signals, their encouragement, their lack, they're they're wanting me, they're not wanting me, they're in other words, I I really, you know, you we we throw around the word backslide.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: It just means a slide back, and and I believe we slide back into areas that have given us trouble before.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: So, in a very real way, God used that moment to say, Chipper, you're you're operating from, listen to this now.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Here's the deal: what you're after, what you're trying to do might be me, God, right, good, exactly what I want for you, but you're operating from a posture of unhealthiness because you're not operating from my opinion of you, you're operating from a distorted um wrong.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Now, what I want to do over the next few weeks is talk about in a sense, what we're gonna talk about is be, do, and have, and we're gonna talk about how we really tend to get those out of order.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And and just to, you know, just to let you know that I'm not like stuck there, um how many of you know you can disappoint people on occasion and in situations, but that doesn't mean you are a disappointment.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Um I know I disappoint people in situations, I disappoint myself in situations, but it's different from the thought, the belief, the stronghold, returning to where there's this subconscious low-frequency hum, I am a disappointment.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And um by the grace of God, I feel like uh we've we've kind of caught that, you might say.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And like I said, probably what I'm gonna do over the next few weeks is just talk about um all of that and and some of how God's leading me to uh correct that and and and get things back on balance and quite honestly uh do some damage control on how that's affected me over the last couple of years as I've gotten lost in the busyness of things.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: So uh it'll be an interesting time together and uh love you guys.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm so honored with any of you that are hanging in there.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: And uh please help get the word out, stir it back up again as we've come out of the holidays and into the new year, and uh get people back on board with us, and we're gonna talk about some really cool stuff as we go into this next year.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Love you guys.
