- 0:00You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:04your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.
- 0:08Hi,
- 0:08I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:09The Kid Counselor.
- 0:10This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get
- 0:12a master class in child-centered play therapy
- 0:15and practical support and application for your
- 0:17work with children and their families.
- 0:19Today's episode,
- 0:20we made it,
- 0:21y'all.
- 0:22Long time coming.
- 0:23We are closing out the MythBuster series.
- 0:26I think this has been such a fun series and I've really enjoyed the feedback.
- 0:30I'm so thrilled to see all the downloads.
- 0:32Like I said last time,
- 0:33this is the most popular series we've ever had.
- 0:35So,
- 0:36I'm really grateful for that.
- 0:37It could just be that the podcast audience is growing as well,
- 0:39but I'm glad that you all have found these helpful,
- 0:41and I know that some of you have emailed me and talked about stuff.
- 0:44So,
- 0:45grateful that we were able to do this.
- 0:46We used to watch MythBusters with our son,
- 0:48so that was kind of the,
- 0:50the start of the idea.
- 0:51And I think this has been really helpful,
- 0:54especially since CCPT is so misunderstood,
- 0:57and there are so many things that people perceive that are incorrect
- 1:01and that are not founded in truth.
- 1:03So,
- 1:04worth talking about it for sure.
- 1:06So,
- 1:06to close out the series,
- 1:07we're going to bust the myth
- 1:10that you will eventually be 100% adherent.
- 1:15And
- 1:16I know that may be a little defeating.
- 1:17I promise it's not though.
- 1:19We have to talk through
- 1:21the fact that
- 1:22there are several components to adherence,
- 1:25and I want to make sure we address those.
- 1:27But at the end of the day,
- 1:29even if you bust your butt the rest of your life,
- 1:32you will never be fully 100% adherent 100% of the time.
- 1:36So,
- 1:37very important to
- 1:39kind of put things in perspective and have appropriate goals and expectations.
- 1:44I'm looking forward to talking through that
- 1:46really quickly.
- 1:48For those of you that might have been waiting for
- 1:50enrollment in the Play Therapy Professional program to open up,
- 1:53enrollment is open to the public as of today.
- 1:56And so,
- 1:56if you are interested in the next cohort,
- 1:59it will be on Mondays at 12:00 Eastern
- 2:02starting August 17th.
- 2:03So,
- 2:03just about a month from now.
- 2:05If you want to schedule a discovery call with me,
- 2:07which is the first step,
- 2:09go to playtherapycoaching.com
- 2:11and that'll be in the show notes if you don't have a pen or whatever,
- 2:13but playtherapycoaching.com,
- 2:15you can schedule a discovery call.
- 2:16Enrollment is open for that next group.
- 2:19I think we have a couple of spots left.
- 2:20So,
- 2:20if you're interested and you've been waiting,
- 2:22just wanted to make y'all aware of that.
- 2:24OK.
- 2:25So,
- 2:25let's talk through adherence because
- 2:29That's one of the things that we're striving for,
- 2:31always.
- 2:32We're working to make sure that we have fidelity and adherence to the model
- 2:36and therefore we're not deviating.
- 2:39I don't think that's possible unless we understand the why behind the skills.
- 2:43That's
- 2:44very much
- 2:45at the heart of what I'm going to be talking about
- 2:47in Indiana and New Jersey the next next couple of months,
- 2:51because
- 2:51if you don't understand the why behind the skills,
- 2:54it's harder to execute the skills with purpose,
- 2:57and it's harder to
- 2:59stay faithful because
- 3:01it just seems like a list of skills that you're supposed to do and if you don't,
- 3:05oh well.
- 3:06There's so much more
- 3:07to CCPT than that.
- 3:08The spirit of it,
- 3:10the philosophy of it,
- 3:11the tenets,
- 3:12they all matter.
- 3:13And so
- 3:15we want adherence,
- 3:16yes,
- 3:17but there's a couple of components that I think we sometimes forget or they get lost.
- 3:24Just because you do this a really long time.
- 3:27And you really want to be fully CCPT.
- 3:30It doesn't mean that you're going to eventually just arrive at 100% adherence.
- 3:36We do not ever.
- 3:38Get better at something haphazardly.
- 3:41We don't ever master something
- 3:43by
- 3:44rote practice.
- 3:46We don't ever just rehearse something long enough and everything falls into place.
- 3:51Those are
- 3:52components,
- 3:53sure,
- 3:54but that's not how we get to adherence.
- 3:57Adherence is a willful
- 3:59second by second decision
- 4:02grounded
- 4:03in the rationale
- 4:05for the why of CCPT.
- 4:08Understanding what CCPT is all about and what the child is going to gain,
- 4:13it is a second by second,
- 4:15every single moment decision.
- 4:18That we're working toward adherence
- 4:20and we refuse to do anything other
- 4:23than what the model.
- 4:25Has us do.
- 4:27There is no coincidental mastery.
- 4:31There is no if I do this long enough
- 4:33or if I have enough sessions or if I read enough books,
- 4:37I'm going to eventually figure this out and be adherent.
- 4:40That's impossible.
- 4:42That's like saying you want to play a professional sport,
- 4:45and as long as you go and
- 4:47practice every single day,
- 4:48you're going to be a professional athlete.
- 4:50That's not how it works.
- 4:52There is so much more to the story,
- 4:55so that is a myth 100%.
- 4:57A lot of therapists tell me,
- 4:58Well,
- 4:58I just don't have enough experience yet.
- 5:00I just don't have enough clients that are kids yet.
- 5:03I don't have enough hours in the playroom yet.
- 5:05I don't have enough knowledge of the model yet.
- 5:07All of those are important.
- 5:10But that doesn't
- 5:11beget
- 5:13adherence.
- 5:14Adherence is deeply understanding
- 5:18every moment
- 5:20in the playroom and understanding that every moment has
- 5:23a decision that we make tied to it.
- 5:26And then the second part of the adherence myth that I want to bust
- 5:29is that
- 5:31Even when
- 5:32you
- 5:33make those moment by moment decisions and even when you deeply understand the why,
- 5:37and even when all of those things line up for you,
- 5:40you have
- 5:40the 10,000 hours and you have all the experience
- 5:43and all the training and you've surrounded yourself by community
- 5:46and you've been coached appropriately
- 5:48and you've perfectly practiced instead of just practiced.
- 5:51I know I've said that several times,
- 5:52but y'all,
- 5:53please
- 5:54don't lose sight of that.
- 5:55You can
- 5:56practice incorrectly
- 5:58and it does not make you better.
- 6:01You can run limits 1000 times,
- 6:03and if you're not setting them adherently,
- 6:05it's not helping you one bit.
- 6:06In fact,
- 6:06it's hindering you
- 6:08because then it becomes muscle memory to execute limits poorly.
- 6:12Perfect practice.
- 6:14is what we're looking for.
- 6:16We're going to practice this until we get it,
- 6:19until it's executed flawlessly every single time.
- 6:24Even under pressure,
- 6:26that's when we know we're at
- 6:27a higher level of mastery and we're,
- 6:29we're up the summit framework more.
- 6:32But that said,
- 6:32we have all of that at some point in our lives.
- 6:36Ideally,
- 6:36hopefully,
- 6:37Lord willing,
- 6:38and the creek don't rise,
- 6:39and then
- 6:40we still go,
- 6:42oh man,
- 6:43I totally botched that today.
- 6:46This is
- 6:47JB this is for you.
- 6:49This is my CCPT confession.
- 6:52I actually said the word perfect in a playroom
- 6:55not too long ago.
- 6:56I actually showed it in the Collective,
- 6:58and one of my graduates called me out on it.
- 7:00She was like,
- 7:00I'm so glad to see that you make mistakes too.
- 7:03And I didn't use it as praise.
- 7:05Like I didn't say,
- 7:07Oh,
- 7:07you,
- 7:08you did that perfectly.
- 7:10It wasn't that kind of
- 7:12value laden word.
- 7:13But the kid was like,
- 7:15You're going to do this and I'm going to do this,
- 7:16and this is going to do this,
- 7:17and we're going to,
- 7:18and it was kind of like dictating the whole thing.
- 7:20And I said,
- 7:21OK,
- 7:21perfect.
- 7:23And it was more like a,
- 7:24got it,
- 7:25I understand kind of phrase,
- 7:27but it popped out of my mouth and as soon as I said it,
- 7:30I was like,
- 7:31Brenna,
- 7:31Michelle,
- 7:33what are you doing right now?
- 7:35Oh my word.
- 7:37I've been doing this 21 years.
- 7:39I have more than 20,000 hours in a playroom.
- 7:42And I coach and I teach and I train and I understand this like the back of my hand.
- 7:48And there is always room for growth,
- 7:51and there are always moments
- 7:52where you're going to go,
- 7:54huh,
- 7:54that is not what I wanted to happen,
- 7:56or
- 7:56I did not mean for that to come out of my mouth,
- 7:58or what the heck was that?
- 8:00That was a little bit of a disaster.
- 8:02I don't care how long you do this.
- 8:04I don't care how much you devote to it.
- 8:06I don't care
- 8:07if
- 8:07the stars align and every single thing is perfect.
- 8:10There's my word again.
- 8:12You are still going to have moments where you're tired
- 8:15or you're stressed
- 8:17or you're emotional
- 8:18or you're overwhelmed or you're uncomfortable
- 8:21or fill in the blank adjective.
- 8:25And
- 8:26something's going to go a little bit awry in your session.
- 8:29Not because the child is doing anything,
- 8:32because you
- 8:34fail full adherence.
- 8:35We can't hold ourselves to that standard.
- 8:38There is no expectation.
- 8:40That we're going to be 100% here and 100% of the time.
- 8:44It's not possible.
- 8:46As much as we try,
- 8:47we're humans
- 8:48and we're flawed
- 8:50and we're imperfect,
- 8:52and that's OK
- 8:53because the relationship is always more important anyway.
- 8:57So as much as we talk about fidelity and adherence and how important it is,
- 9:01and that is 100% true.
- 9:04We have to be focused on those things because
- 9:07they're necessary.
- 9:09We should not,
- 9:10here,
- 9:10here's my soapbox moment for like 30 seconds.
- 9:13We should not tolerate
- 9:16or accept.
- 9:18Wishy-washy CCPT.
- 9:20We should not tolerate or accept
- 9:24not doing everything you can.
- 9:27To get to a point where you are adherent
- 9:29and that you are faithful to the model.
- 9:32If we don't care about fidelity and adherence,
- 9:35we have no empirical support for what we're doing.
- 9:38Y'all,
- 9:39I,
- 9:39I've said this 5000 times and I'm going to say it 50,000 more.
- 9:43If you add anything or take anything away
- 9:46or deviate,
- 9:48you no longer know if it's going to work.
- 9:51There is such simplicity
- 9:52in the notion of a theoretical orientation
- 9:55and that you have to be adherent to the theoretical orientation.
- 9:59So,
- 10:00as much as that is
- 10:02so important,
- 10:03crucial really
- 10:05to the whole process.
- 10:07We can't expect ourselves to do it flawlessly every single time.
- 10:12But those mistakes that we make and those moments where we're like,
- 10:15hm,
- 10:15that limit didn't come out very
- 10:17helpfully,
- 10:18or,
- 10:18oh,
- 10:19that really wasn't a choice.
- 10:20I didn't even use the word choose three times,
- 10:22or,
- 10:22oh,
- 10:23I forgot to reflect a feeling there,
- 10:25whatever it is.
- 10:27We know that the relationship is more important
- 10:30than the skills or the lack thereof.
- 10:33And therefore,
- 10:34we're busting the myth that
- 10:37if we just keep doing this long enough,
- 10:38you'll eventually be 100% adherent.
- 10:40You'll never be 100% adherent,
- 10:41number 1.
- 10:42Number 2,
- 10:43it certainly doesn't happen by chance.
- 10:46So we work as hard as we can to get there
- 10:49and then we know that we're never going to fully arrive.
- 10:53Two myths busted,
- 10:54one fell swoop.
- 10:55I love it.
- 10:56So,
- 10:57thanks so much for hanging out with me for this series.
- 10:59I've really enjoyed it.
- 11:00We're going to transition into
- 11:03a couple of
- 11:05new
- 11:06concepts that kind of all work together really helpfully.
- 11:08So,
- 11:09I think we're gonna have 5 or 6 weeks of kind of stand-alone concepts,
- 11:12but they're all going to be kind of part of a bigger whole.
- 11:15So,
- 11:15looking forward to that.
- 11:17And there's so much going on,
- 11:18y'all.
- 11:18So,
- 11:19if you're new,
- 11:19welcome.
- 11:20Really,
- 11:20really glad you're here.
- 11:21This is
- 11:22an extraordinary group of CCPTs that love kids and love this model.
- 11:26You will feel right at home if you are in the same boat.
- 11:29So really glad to have you.
- 11:30Check the show notes,
- 11:31y'all.
