Latest / Hutton & Withrow Show / Hutton & Withrow: Lane Kiffin Returns to Oxford, Titans’ Cam Ward Concerns & Derrick Henry’s Historic Career | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on Sport and State.
- 0:02Speaker 1: This is Hutton and Withrow. Good Friday morning to you.
- 0:05Speaker 1: He's Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton. We are ready for
- 0:07Speaker 1: college football kickoffs, the NFL Week 2, and much more.
- 0:11Speaker 1: A lot to get to on the slate today over
- 0:13Speaker 1: the next two hours throughout the day here on the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Sport and State Network. Chad, good morning to you.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, Hutton. Excited for a big weekend.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Excited to head to Oxford after this show this morning
- 0:23Speaker 1: and get set for a big live show at Funky's
- 0:26Speaker 1: tonight on the Square, 7 o'clock Central Time. Hope to
- 0:29Speaker 1: see a lot of Ole Miss, and maybe even a
- 0:31Speaker 1: few LSU fans out. I don't know if LSU fans,
- 0:34Speaker 1: judging by the rhetoric surrounding this game, I don't know
- 0:36Speaker 1: if LSU fans feel safe. They need to be in
- 0:39Speaker 1: their safe comfort zone. And I don't know that they're
- 0:42Speaker 1: going to be out and about because of the National
- 0:44Speaker 1: Guard needing to be called and everything else. We're making
- 0:47Speaker 1: way too much out of that part of it. We
- 0:48Speaker 1: aren't going to make enough out of the atmosphere around
- 0:51Speaker 1: this weekend and this game. The biggest weekend in the
- 0:54Speaker 1: history of Oxford, Mississippi.
- 0:56Speaker 2: We'll go ahead and call it.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Even bigger than when they hosted a college football playoff game.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And we're there live tonight. Funkies on the square in Oxford,
- 1:03Speaker 1: 7 to 8 p.m.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Can't wait.
- 1:05Speaker 1: How does this game possibly live up to the hype
- 1:07Speaker 1: behind it? Unless there's some antics by Lane throughout the game.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I just don't know how the game matches the build.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I keep going back in my mind when I think
- 1:21Speaker 1: about this game to the last huge return of Lane Kiffin,
- 1:25Speaker 1: which was to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2021. That game lived
- 1:29Speaker 1: up to the hype and then some. I mean, we
- 1:32Speaker 1: want to talk about the possibility of Ole Miss fans
- 1:35Speaker 1: doing something. We know Tennessee fans are capable of doing
- 1:38Speaker 1: something because they got pissed and chucked mustard bottles and
- 1:41Speaker 1: golf balls onto the field at Lane Kiffin, right? And
- 1:44Speaker 1: that was a steady build of– I mean, I went
- 1:48Speaker 1: back and saw someone post, Tennessee has never sold more
- 1:52Speaker 1: alcohol in the history of that stadium than than they
- 1:55Speaker 1: did that night for.
- 1:56Speaker 2: The Ole Miss game.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And it's by a lot, too. But it was an
- 2:01Speaker 1: all-day churn. If you remember, Hutton, we had a show
- 2:03Speaker 1: that morning in Athens, Georgia.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And it came back.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And I remember getting back to town almost just in
- 2:08Speaker 1: time for that game. But it was an all-day, steady
- 2:12Speaker 1: churn of drinking, of hatred towards Lane Kiffin. And then
- 2:16Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin delivers, right? He plays the role of the villain.
- 2:21Speaker 1: He's turning to the crowd and gesturing at them. He's
- 2:23Speaker 1: making injuries.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I mean, the whole game.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And then Tennessee gets screwed. They have a fumble recovery
- 2:30Speaker 1: and run it back for a touchdown. That was clearly
- 2:32Speaker 1: a fumble. They said the ball was dead. You had
- 2:34Speaker 1: all these different things that conspired to it. I say
- 2:37Speaker 1: all that to lay out that that's the only way
- 2:40Speaker 1: this game delivers.
- 2:41Speaker 2: There's got to be some kind of controversy.
- 2:43Speaker 1: There's got to be something that Lane Kiffin caused or
- 2:46Speaker 1: that Ole Miss fans feel like he caused during the game, right? Now,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I think it has a chance to be just a
- 2:51Speaker 1: great football game. high-scoring, shootout-type game, and then it could
- 2:55Speaker 1: definitely live up to it also. But to really live
- 2:58Speaker 1: up to it, I hate to say this, but to
- 3:00Speaker 1: live up to it, there almost has to be some
- 3:01Speaker 1: sort of chaos.
- 3:02Speaker 2: There has to be.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Or some sort of controversy after this game to truly
- 3:06Speaker 1: live up to how heavily.
- 3:08Speaker 2: This game has been hyped up. So let's see.
- 3:11Speaker 1: By the way, we're presented by Hard Rock Bet. Go
- 3:14Speaker 1: to hardrock.bet.com. You get $ 5 bet, and then you get
- 3:17Speaker 1: $ 100 back in bonus bets. This is the first top
- 3:21Speaker 1: 10 showdown between these two since 1962. And, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: it's very fitting that they're right side by side this
- 3:31Speaker 1: week going into the game week. But, yeah, I mean,
- 3:35Speaker 1: both teams off to a nice start. And now we
- 3:37Speaker 1: see Trinidad Chambliss going against his former coach. This should
- 3:41Speaker 1: be a blast.
- 3:43Speaker 2: A lot to watch.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Hey, and wouldn't you know it, there's an upgrade at quarterback, Chad.
- 3:46Speaker 1: There's an upgrade at quarterback. For Levitt, he's now questionable.
- 3:51Speaker 1: He's not doubtful any longer. The doubtful only lasted for
- 3:53Speaker 1: about 24 hours. Yep.
- 3:55Speaker 2: He looks a lot better now.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I said to you guys, we can't play it because
- 3:59Speaker 1: it's a movie clip and it would get us in trouble.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Our guy, was it Blaine Crane or Jake Crane? One
- 4:05Speaker 2: of the two. I think it was Blaine.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Blaine Crane posted the Willy Wonka where he's limping in
- 4:10Speaker 1: in all purple. And it said, this is Sam Levitt
- 4:12Speaker 1: showing up at the stadium. And then he rides to
- 4:14Speaker 1: the door, does a flip, and is ready to go
- 4:17Speaker 1: for the game. That was just absolutely perfect. Yeah, it
- 4:20Speaker 1: looks like, I mean, exactly what we thought. It's going
- 4:23Speaker 1: to slowly move towards he's starting.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And no one bought it. I mean, the line barely changed, right?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we kind of knew that was probably
- 4:31Speaker 1: going to happen at some point. It's also fitting that
- 4:38Speaker 1: you look at this game, and by the way, get
- 4:40Speaker 1: in the YouTube chat, hit us up there. I'll be
- 4:42Speaker 1: monitoring the YouTube page as well. Hope to have a
- 4:44Speaker 1: lot of people watching today live so we can interact
- 4:46Speaker 1: with you. It's fitting that the last time these two
- 4:50Speaker 1: teams were top 10 was during segregation in 1962.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Because that's another layer to this, is Lane Kiffin left,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and Ole Miss fans haven't forgotten it, but basically said
- 5:04Speaker 1: in an interview that it was hard to recruit to
- 5:05Speaker 1: Ole Miss because it's so racist. And the history there,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and it was hard to get players there, and it's
- 5:10Speaker 1: way easier to attract black athletes to Baton Rouge than
- 5:14Speaker 1: it is to Oxford, Mississippi. Just another layer to all this,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and you saying 1962 was the last time these two
- 5:20Speaker 1: teams were top ten. Made me think of all that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I can't wait, Hutton. I mean, you haven't been to Oxford, right?
- 5:27Speaker 2: No, I've never been. Okay, it's awesome.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's like a mini version of Athens. You know, Athens
- 5:34Speaker 1: has like three different huge streets in their downtown that
- 5:37Speaker 1: has a lot of stuff going on. Oxford is basically
- 5:39Speaker 1: one square, you know, but the square is really cool
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the downtown area. But it is just classic, small
- 5:46Speaker 1: southern town around a square. And then the tailgating scene
- 5:49Speaker 1: at the Grove is.
- 5:52Speaker 2: It's overwhelming. I'm trying to.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Prepare you for this when we're walking around the Grove,
- 5:55Speaker 1: but you can get lost in it because everything is connected.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You're going to see chandeliers hanging from different tailgates and
- 6:04Speaker 1: women wearing white gloves serving out hors d'oeuvres to everyone.
- 6:09Speaker 1: It's an unbelievable setting for college football. And I can't
- 6:12Speaker 1: wait for you to see it. I can't wait to
- 6:14Speaker 1: get down there a little bit later today and be.
- 6:16Speaker 2: A part of it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So the university has announced if you are wearing opponent
- 6:20Speaker 1: colors in the student section, you will be escorted out.
- 6:23Speaker 1: You will not be allowed to go anywhere close to
- 6:25Speaker 1: the student section wearing LSU gear whatsoever. And if you,
- 6:28Speaker 1: if you, uh, you know, if you're wearing Ole Miss
- 6:31Speaker 1: gear and then you get to your seat and peel
- 6:33Speaker 1: it off and you've got LSU, you're kicked out. Uh, they've,
- 6:36Speaker 1: they've made it very clear this morning. Uh, Walker Jones
- 6:39Speaker 1: will join us later in the show. Uh, he's the, uh,
- 6:42Speaker 1: Executive Director of the Grove Collective. Looking forward to chatting
- 6:44Speaker 1: with him about what this week has been like, what
- 6:46Speaker 1: tomorrow night will be like as well. And just the
- 6:52Speaker 1: idea that you could do anything but focus on this storyline.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It engulfs you. It's everything.
- 7:00Speaker 1: They're putting up fences around certain parts of the stadium.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think when someone walks or two, I sense the
- 7:07Speaker 1: anxiety of this game. It's like, okay, we've talked about
- 7:10Speaker 1: it forever. Now it's proof of concept. We have to
- 7:13Speaker 1: show that we are okay without Lane Kiffin. And it's
- 7:17Speaker 1: tough to know that. I mean, you lost a coach
- 7:19Speaker 1: who won. Look at the record his last three years
- 7:23Speaker 1: at Ole Miss. It's right up there with the best
- 7:25Speaker 1: in the country of anyone else. So getting that process
- 7:29Speaker 1: going of starting to prove that is crazy. Ben on
- 7:32Speaker 1: the YouTube chat says, is it true hotel rooms like
- 7:35Speaker 1: the La Quinta Inn are $ 1, 800 a night in Oxford?
- 7:37Speaker 1: That is, in fact, true. I can tell you also
- 7:41Speaker 1: that we are staying in a house and we got
- 7:43Speaker 1: a great hookup in Oxford, Mississippi. But there is someone
- 7:47Speaker 1: that is out of the country renting us their house.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And this person said, I'm just going to charge based
- 7:54Speaker 1: on what the going rate or average is for any
- 7:58Speaker 1: hotel room in Oxford. based on the four-bedroom house that
- 8:01Speaker 1: we're renting, that house is $ 13, 000 for the weekend, $ 6, 500
- 8:07Speaker 1: a night. So that shows you the price of real
- 8:11Speaker 1: estate in Oxford, Mississippi right now when you think of
- 8:14Speaker 1: it that way. And no, we're not paying for that,
- 8:17Speaker 1: so don't even ask. Brooks in the chat says, I
- 8:21Speaker 1: think the storyline of the race car being played by
- 8:23Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin is factored into Morgan Freeman being the celebrity
- 8:27Speaker 1: guest picker on college game day. Morgan Freeman's the best
- 8:30Speaker 1: possible person you could get. For someone who's from that area,
- 8:34Speaker 1: who lives there, I mean, that's a great job by ESPN.
- 8:37Speaker 1: We've been crushing college game day, but of all the people,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I saw some posts that they were considering Jelly Roll
- 8:42Speaker 1: and other people that aren't even really connected to Ole Miss,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and Ole Miss people were pissed off about it. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: can't think of much better than Morgan Freeman. I think
- 8:49Speaker 1: Morgan Freeman is going to sound like someone who knows
- 8:51Speaker 1: nothing about football because I don't think Morgan Freeman knows
- 8:54Speaker 1: much football. But to have the gravitas of the voice
- 8:57Speaker 1: of God there and Morgan Freeman live on set is going.
- 9:00Speaker 2: To be pretty cool. If McAfee will let him speak,
- 9:03Speaker 2: we'll see.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah. It's long gone are the days of Herbstreet helping
- 9:09Speaker 1: Lee Corso the whole time.
- 9:10Speaker 2: He's on set.
- 9:11Speaker 1: He was so good at knowing how to get him
- 9:13Speaker 1: going and help him out with things when he was
- 9:16Speaker 1: struggling to find the words for something. Yeah, I think
- 9:19Speaker 1: McAfee will probably be talking over him. So, chat GPT.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Lynn's a helping hand for Lane Train. So... He's going
- 9:29Speaker 1: back and forth with Tom Mars. Chad, you've been following
- 9:32Speaker 1: him for quite some time over this case and before.
- 9:36Speaker 1: But the headline is, LSU coach Lane Kiffin ratted out
- 9:38Speaker 1: by high-profile lawyer for embarrassing use of chat GPT for
- 9:41Speaker 1: legal advice. My guess is he's doing exactly what everybody
- 9:45Speaker 1: on that campus is doing, including those in politics there
- 9:53Speaker 1: across the state. They're quoting certain laws and judgments as well.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Tom Mars, though... Repost.
- 10:01Speaker 1: This headline and says, for the record, I didn't write
- 10:03Speaker 1: out Lane about anything. I sent Lane a copy of
- 10:05Speaker 1: my comments to ESPN for his approval and said I
- 10:08Speaker 1: would delete any part of them that he wasn't comfortable with.
- 10:12Speaker 1: He replied via text and asked me to rewrite part
- 10:14Speaker 1: where I quoted his text and inadvertently left out the
- 10:17Speaker 1: part about Nick Saban and gave the exact language to use.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Lane has a great sense of humor, even about himself,
- 10:22Speaker 1: and I think he knew that the parts of my
- 10:24Speaker 1: comments that are receiving so much attention today would be
- 10:27Speaker 1: really funny.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And they are, he says. That's from Tom Mars. Well,
- 10:32Speaker 2: this is why I respect and like Tom Mars. They're buddies.
- 10:36Speaker 1: He's worked on behalf of Lane before. But also, he
- 10:40Speaker 1: was honest enough to say repeatedly that LSU was wrong
- 10:43Speaker 1: for trying to bring the players on. He was the
- 10:45Speaker 1: one that I was reading that was giving the legal
- 10:47Speaker 1: opinion that It's going to eventually come back that the
- 10:50Speaker 1: SEC can't enforce their own bylaws on this. So you're
- 10:53Speaker 1: fighting an uphill battle. And I'm sure that he's texting
- 10:56Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin that. And, in fact, he was because he
- 10:58Speaker 1: says Lane Kiffin responds with chat GPT legal advice on
- 11:01Speaker 1: how it's allowed for LSU to do it, which is very,
- 11:04Speaker 1: very funny. And also I do like the fact that
- 11:07Speaker 1: Lane responds like, yeah, I'm fine with that. And in
- 11:10Speaker 1: the Mark Slaball piece, it basically– I think Lane Kiffin
- 11:13Speaker 1: was the one who said it in response– It's like, hey,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I can save you $ 33 on the John Talti book.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin is a guy who's arrogant and doesn't get
- 11:21Speaker 1: along with coaches 10 years ago and drinks alcohol and
- 11:25Speaker 1: hangs out with hot women. And now it's Lane Kiffin
- 11:28Speaker 1: is arrogant, doesn't drink alcohol, but still hangs out with
- 11:30Speaker 1: hot women.
- 11:31Speaker 2: That's going to be the gist of the whole story.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Then I saw John Talty, who he had on, it
- 11:35Speaker 1: was very good, say, well, I interviewed, you know, 175
- 11:38Speaker 1: people for the book. So there's quite a bit more
- 11:40Speaker 1: in there than just those parts. But yes, that is
- 11:43Speaker 1: definitely part of the book also. I mean, it's all
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Lane Kiffin stuff coming out of this. And I've
- 11:49Speaker 1: been trying to read through a lot of it. I
- 11:52Speaker 1: thought Bruce Feldman had the best piece that I've read
- 11:54Speaker 1: so far with The Athletic and The New York Times.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It was just a simple question of what makes Lane
- 11:59Speaker 1: Kiffin a genius? What makes him so good as a
- 12:03Speaker 1: head coach? And it was different coaches talking about how
- 12:07Speaker 1: he sees things develop and set up better than anyone
- 12:10Speaker 1: they've been around as a play caller. The best quote,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and I think it was an anonymous coach that said this,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but they said, you want, this was perfect, you want
- 12:21Speaker 1: Sark Sunday through Friday and you want Lane Kiffin on Saturdays.
- 12:26Speaker 1: comparing the two of them. That Sarkeesian is the guy
- 12:29Speaker 1: you want around the program, building it up, doing all that.
- 12:33Speaker 2: The culture guy, quote unquote.
- 12:35Speaker 1: But in terms of offensive play callers, you're going to
- 12:38Speaker 1: want Lane Kiffin on Saturdays. And Lane Kiffin doesn't even
- 12:41Speaker 1: hide it. He does not believe in culture. It says
- 12:44Speaker 1: in the piece that he didn't even tear down the
- 12:46Speaker 1: signage from the previous Florida Atlantic coach. That he kept
- 12:49Speaker 1: up all the slogans and everything that guy had.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He doesn't care.
- 12:53Speaker 1: All he cares about is, bring me good players, practice
- 12:57Speaker 1: really hard, and I'm going to set them up for
- 13:00Speaker 1: success with how I call the game and how I
- 13:02Speaker 1: structure everything. There's not a lot of rules with Lane Kiffin.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He's not going to spend a lot of time. There's
- 13:07Speaker 1: not going to be a lot of Butch Jones-isms out
- 13:09Speaker 1: there about brick by brick. It is bring me dudes.
- 13:12Speaker 1: We're going to play hard in practice. That's a Pete
- 13:15Speaker 1: Carroll trait. We're going to go all out in the
- 13:17Speaker 1: time that we have. And if you do that, you're
- 13:19Speaker 1: going to be fine with Lane Kiffin. If you perform
- 13:22Speaker 1: during the games, then everything is going to be okay.
- 13:25Speaker 1: By the time the paint dries, he expects to be
- 13:27Speaker 1: out of town, you know, on the walls with all
- 13:30Speaker 1: the slogans.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Was it Schnellenberger that was there just prior to him
- 13:32Speaker 2: at FAU? I can't remember. That's a good question. I'm
- 13:35Speaker 2: not sure when he finished, but it may have been. Yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 2: he was there forever.
- 13:38Speaker 1: He was there when I was in college, and I
- 13:40Speaker 1: feel like Lane was right after that. But, I mean,
- 13:43Speaker 1: there's no telling how many slogans that... and phrases that
- 13:46Speaker 1: Schnellenberger would have had up there for the program. And
- 13:49Speaker 1: Kiffin didn't plan on being there very long. But still,
- 13:52Speaker 1: I do respect the fact that he doesn't come with
- 13:54Speaker 1: the brick-by-brick stuff. You know, that he doesn't just repeat stuff. Like,
- 13:58Speaker 1: Robert Sala right now is repeating exactly what he's done
- 14:00Speaker 1: in New York. Hey, Hutton, by the way, real quick,
- 14:02Speaker 1: before we get to Sala. There were three coaches in
- 14:05Speaker 1: between Schnellenberger, but... Forgive you and no one else for
- 14:12Speaker 1: not remembering them because they were there for three years,
- 14:14Speaker 1: for four years. They had three coaches in four years.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Carl Polini, who I do now remember, Bo Polini's brother.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Brian Wright was an interim. And then Charlie Partridge had
- 14:25Speaker 1: the job from 2014 to 2016. I'm sorry, FAU Owls
- 14:29Speaker 1: fans and alums. I do not remember the Charlie Partridge
- 14:32Speaker 1: era at all of FAU football. Lane Kiffin took over
- 14:36Speaker 1: for Charlie Partridge in 2017, and he was there. For
- 14:40Speaker 1: three years, and he GTFO'd to Ole Miss at that point. Hey,
- 14:45Speaker 1: JT's pulled the rates right now at the La Quinta.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Here are the rates right now in Oxford. Going Friday, Friday,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Saturday nights. What does that say.
- 14:58Speaker 2: $ 350?
- 14:59Speaker 4: It's $ 1, 000 tonight, and it's $ 2, 000 tomorrow night.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But there's availability. That's crazy to me. So they must
- 15:07Speaker 1: have gone down a little bit because it was like
- 15:10Speaker 1: over $ 1, 500 per room. But I guess that people aren't
- 15:13Speaker 1: paying it. So they went down with their rates a
- 15:15Speaker 1: little bit.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Hey, good job. I was looking at the highlights. Understanding
- 15:18Speaker 2: supply and demand.
- 15:19Speaker 1: If you haven't gotten rid of those rooms yet, you're
- 15:22Speaker 1: probably not going to. So might as well lower the price.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's probably the first floor, you know, right there, right
- 15:28Speaker 1: next to the, you get the ice machine. Try to
- 15:31Speaker 1: think like that's your $ 2, 000 a night room right there.
- 15:34Speaker 1: outdoor entrance, but the lock is a little jiggly. You
- 15:38Speaker 1: can't actually use the key without breaking the lock.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Just one of those.
- 15:42Speaker 1: We went to Atlanta for a Braves game this summer
- 15:44Speaker 1: as a family, and we stayed in the Omni the
- 15:46Speaker 1: first night, which was a spectacular experience. I mean, you
- 15:49Speaker 1: can breathe in the rich, fresh air of the Omni
- 15:53Speaker 1: when you walk into that lobby and the battery. And
- 15:55Speaker 1: we had a room that overlooked the stadium. It was incredible. Hudson,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you've been in that same hotel for the All-Star game.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Just an incredible setup there. We moved to a different
- 16:05Speaker 1: hotel the next night, and it was like a residence-in
- 16:08Speaker 1: level deal that's walking distance from the Battery, but certainly
- 16:11Speaker 1: not the Omni, probably something that was built in the
- 16:13Speaker 1: late 80s, I would guess, mid to late 80s. And, Hutton,
- 16:17Speaker 1: I had a room.
- 16:18Speaker 2: You mentioned the ice maker.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It was a two-bedroom suite, and Angie and the girls
- 16:24Speaker 1: slept in one king bed, and I slept on a
- 16:26Speaker 1: fold-out couch. I mean, I feel like the damn ice
- 16:29Speaker 1: maker was in my eardrum. the whole time, like wherever
- 16:32Speaker 1: I was laying that thing about.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Every hour and a half.
- 16:36Speaker 1: And it wasn't like just every 30 minutes, hour, every three,
- 16:39Speaker 1: it was like 90 minutes on the dot. That thing
- 16:41Speaker 1: would start to churn more ice and produce more ice.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And I would hear it.
- 16:45Speaker 2: It would wake me up all night. Yeah. Terrible.
- 16:48Speaker 1: By the way, right now, tonight in Nashville, the four
- 16:50Speaker 1: seasons is going for $ 400 a night.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And you got the La Quinta and Oxford going for what?
- 16:54Speaker 2: Two grand.
- 16:55Speaker 1: But you know, the smell of the, the, the, you know,
- 16:59Speaker 1: if you got the, The great palatial hotels that just
- 17:02Speaker 1: smell like you're floating on a cloud, right? Like there's
- 17:08Speaker 1: nothing else but a five-star hotel inside. And then you
- 17:10Speaker 1: go to the La Quinta and it's like a Civil
- 17:13Speaker 1: War battle wound is what you walk in. What are
- 17:18Speaker 1: those deals for two grand a night?
- 17:20Speaker 2: I wonder who will take that. Someone's going to do it.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Maybe that's where Morgan Freeman's posse is staying for the
- 17:26Speaker 1: college game day picker.
- 17:27Speaker 2: They're like, hey, Morgan's like, I got no room in
- 17:29Speaker 2: my house.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure, I know he has a home in Oxford.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I think he lives there permanently, but I'm not positive.
- 17:35Speaker 1: But I mean, heck, he may be our next door
- 17:37Speaker 1: neighbor where we're staying on this trip for all we know.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I mean, we're going to be on a golf course,
- 17:42Speaker 1: so I'm guessing he's probably close by somewhere. Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I just wanted to read to us. You know, whatever
- 17:48Speaker 2: it is. Can you read from the book of Ecclesiastes, please, sir?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Just for the next 30 minutes or so? Yeah, just
- 17:55Speaker 2: the playbook. Whatever it takes.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of just weird slogans and repeat phrases that
- 18:06Speaker 1: are coming back around, all the Jets fans are letting
- 18:08Speaker 1: all Titans fans know, we have seen this before from
- 18:12Speaker 1: Robert Saleh. He doesn't want you to give 100% or 110%.
- 18:14Speaker 1: He just wants you to give the remaining 60%. Details there,
- 18:20Speaker 1: plus Cam Ward, not accountable, and a player that gives
- 18:24Speaker 1: you the perfect example of how it is to be accountable.
- 18:28Speaker 1: That's next here on Hutton & Withrow. It's Hutton &

- 19:47Speaker 1: you know this era well, the brick by brick era.
- 19:50Speaker 1: don't we all, with Butch Jones. It's starting to feel
- 19:55Speaker 1: a little like that over at the Titans facility with
- 19:58Speaker 1: what I hear coming out of that building. It was
- 20:01Speaker 1: all gas, no brake. And then it was all of
- 20:04Speaker 1: a sudden, this.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Is our floor. This is our floor. Wait until we're
- 20:08Speaker 2: going to improve and all this.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And So now we're beginning to hear a 60%, 40%.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Help me out with this. What is Robert Sala trying
- 20:16Speaker 2: to run back that he did in New York?
- 20:19Speaker 1: So Robert Sala claims, and I really don't understand the
- 20:23Speaker 1: science behind this and what he's quoting exactly, but he's
- 20:27Speaker 1: claiming that human beings, when they feel like they're giving 100%,
- 20:30Speaker 1: are actually giving 40% effort and that there's 60% left
- 20:36Speaker 1: over that you can give at any given time.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I don't buy that. I mean, I would buy if.
- 20:42Speaker 1: He said like 80 or 90 and you've got an
- 20:45Speaker 1: extra 20 or 10 in the tank.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah, he's saying like the tank's not empty. Is that
- 20:49Speaker 2: what he's saying, I guess?
- 20:50Speaker 1: I feel like if you know that your body is
- 20:54Speaker 1: being stressed to the limit and you're going as hard
- 20:57Speaker 1: as you can, you kind of know that you're pretty
- 20:59Speaker 1: close to 100%. Again, mentally it may stop you before
- 21:02Speaker 1: you get to 100% because that would just lead to
- 21:05Speaker 1: death basically at that point when you stop going.
- 21:09Speaker 2: But 40%? And there's 60% left over?
- 21:12Speaker 1: I'm doubting the math and the science based on what
- 21:15Speaker 1: Robert Sala is saying. But Xavier Restrepo was seen in
- 21:18Speaker 1: the facility yesterday wearing a shirt that said 60%. Terry McCormick,
- 21:22Speaker 1: who covers the Titans, saw this, asked about it, and
- 21:25Speaker 1: said it goes with a saying that is said a
- 21:28Speaker 1: lot by Robert Sala that if you think you're giving 100,
- 21:30Speaker 1: you're actually giving 40, which means there's 60% left over.
- 21:34Speaker 2: So he constantly says 60% to people.
- 21:38Speaker 1: This is opening yourself up for a lot of ridicule
- 21:40Speaker 1: and a lot of jokes for a pretty meaningless type thing.
- 21:44Speaker 1: But when you're wearing a shirt that says 60% and
- 21:46Speaker 1: not 100% or not 110%, or heck, not 160%, going
- 21:51Speaker 1: by what he's actually trying to say here, it looks
- 21:54Speaker 1: pretty stupid, Hutton. Well, when you lose, it looks really dumb, right?
- 22:00Speaker 1: It looks like they gave 40% this past Sunday against
- 22:02Speaker 1: the Jets. you know, like just the, the, the way
- 22:05Speaker 1: they played, the way they reacted on the sideline, according to, to,
- 22:09Speaker 1: to Katie, according to Dyson, uh, Titans radio sideline reporter, Chad,
- 22:13Speaker 1: this is like, this goes to like the mental toughness angle,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I guess that he's, that he's trying to hone in on. Um,
- 22:21Speaker 1: this team doesn't have it right now. And here they
- 22:24Speaker 1: go into week two. If week one's a liar, they
- 22:26Speaker 1: can certainly prove it to us, but I've, I'm not
- 22:30Speaker 1: hearing or seeing things out of the building that makes
- 22:32Speaker 1: me think that this is a team that's going to
- 22:34Speaker 1: rebound after just a collapse in week one. They're already
- 22:37Speaker 1: going to the.
- 22:40Speaker 1: They're going back to the tank to pull out another
- 22:45Speaker 1: phrase after all gas, no break, was it?
- 22:47Speaker 2: And then, oh, this is our floor. We're going to
- 22:49Speaker 2: continue to climb. Now, what's next week? You know, I just...
- 22:54Speaker 2: I look at this and just shake my head and
- 22:55Speaker 2: think they lack.
- 22:59Speaker 1: That true number one leader that you can rely on
- 23:03Speaker 1: that's going to have the ball in his hands every
- 23:04Speaker 1: single play. And until they buy in on the quarterback,
- 23:08Speaker 1: there's not going to be buy-in on anything. They can
- 23:11Speaker 1: like Robert Sala. I like Robert Sala a lot. I
- 23:13Speaker 1: like Brian Dable. But the results are with Cam Ward,
- 23:17Speaker 1: number one. And until we see that, until we see
- 23:20Speaker 1: the accountability take a turn, this team's not going to
- 23:25Speaker 1: do anything but.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Give 40% out of 100 on game day. They're already
- 23:29Speaker 2: lacking that on the sideline, Chad.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And I also think you just need all facets to
- 23:33Speaker 1: complement each other in the organization. The roster is just
- 23:36Speaker 1: not good enough right now. These players just aren't mentally
- 23:40Speaker 1: tough enough.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Well, hang on, Chad. They're good enough to beat the Jets, though.
- 23:44Speaker 2: No doubt. And I'm not making excuses for them. But
- 23:48Speaker 2: to have this whole mantra.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Of 60% and when you're giving 100, you're actually giving 40,
- 23:53Speaker 1: and we're going to give the extra 60%.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Great. I have no issue with that.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Like, if a coach wants to build culture any way
- 23:59Speaker 1: he wants, I'm not opposed to talking in those terms
- 24:02Speaker 1: and doing things like that. But, you know, I just
- 24:05Speaker 1: got done and I finished Hard Knocks and watching that
- 24:07Speaker 1: with Mike McDonald.
- 24:09Speaker 2: And I'm watching how Mike McDonald interacts with his team.
- 24:11Speaker 1: He's very straightforward. Seems like he cares about the players.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Seems like the players have his back. He can get
- 24:17Speaker 1: on them, too, as we saw at times as well.
- 24:20Speaker 2: But, Hutton, it all.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Works because the players are accountable, because the players they've
- 24:25Speaker 1: drafted are– hard asses for lack of a better term, right?
- 24:29Speaker 1: Like they get after it too. So it sort of
- 24:32Speaker 1: reflects what Mike McDonald's all about. If you have one
- 24:35Speaker 1: side that's not meeting the other, it doesn't matter. I
- 24:38Speaker 1: think Robert Sala is about the right things and wants
- 24:42Speaker 1: to do the right things with the players, the organization.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But until you get a bunch of dudes and a
- 24:47Speaker 1: bunch of leaders that are going to be about what
- 24:50Speaker 1: you're about, it doesn't matter. Like you can, it's like
- 24:53Speaker 1: talking to this wall in front of me right now,
- 24:55Speaker 1: the entire time. They're not going to listen. It's not
- 24:58Speaker 1: going to take. Jeffrey Simmons can get as upset and
- 25:02Speaker 1: as loud and angry as he wants. But until there
- 25:04Speaker 1: are more guys, and I'm not saying built physically like
- 25:07Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons because he's a freak. There's not a lot
- 25:10Speaker 1: of dudes like Jeffrey Simmons out there. There's not a
- 25:12Speaker 1: lot of players to his level at that position. But
- 25:15Speaker 1: until you get guys with that mentality that respond to
- 25:18Speaker 1: those challenges and things like that, then it's going to
- 25:21Speaker 1: be a problem. And I'm going to keep picking on
- 25:24Speaker 1: Cam Ward here because he's got to be that guy.
- 25:27Speaker 1: As your number one pick at quarterback, he's got to
- 25:30Speaker 1: be the example you follow. And the example he's setting
- 25:33Speaker 1: right now is when I'm questioning about my accuracy, I'm
- 25:36Speaker 1: going to roll my receivers under the bus. When I'm
- 25:39Speaker 1: questioning about saying I'm already a really good quarterback, I'm
- 25:42Speaker 1: going to say a word, Sal, that makes no sense.
- 25:45Speaker 1: and talk about defensive coordinator strategy.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Well, yeah, duh.
- 25:49Speaker 1: The defensive coordinator strategy is to make you look stupid
- 25:51Speaker 1: and to stop you, and you're doing a really good
- 25:53Speaker 1: job of helping them do that. The response to Cam
- 25:56Speaker 1: Ward when he gets frustrated is to break a tablet
- 25:58Speaker 1: on the sideline and to throw a hissy fit. Again,
- 26:03Speaker 1: you've got to have both sides that meet. It's not
- 26:05Speaker 1: Robert Sala's fault solely. It's not Cam Ward's fault solely.
- 26:10Speaker 1: It's not the roster's fault.
- 26:12Speaker 2: It's everything.
- 26:13Speaker 1: You don't have anything that's matching up right now that
- 26:15Speaker 1: I see with the Titans. And I don't know how much,
- 26:18Speaker 1: I think you can coach a little bit of it, Hutton,
- 26:20Speaker 1: but don't you feel like when you get to the NFL,
- 26:22Speaker 1: and you've been around that locker room a lot, and
- 26:24Speaker 1: NFL locker rooms a lot, if you don't have that
- 26:27Speaker 1: work ethic and that desire and that fire by the
- 26:30Speaker 1: time you get to the NFL, I think it's hard
- 26:31Speaker 1: for a coach to teach that into you. I think
- 26:33Speaker 1: it's all about roster management, team building, and guys that
- 26:38Speaker 1: you bring in having the right mindset that fits the
- 26:41Speaker 1: coach and the organization.
- 26:43Speaker 2: No doubt, man.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I think a part of this, too, is Cam Ward,
- 26:46Speaker 1: five years ago, he's an incarnate word.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Everywhere he's been has been a short stay, but he's
- 26:50Speaker 2: been the leader.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He's been placed at the quarterback spot, and he's led
- 26:55Speaker 1: that team, right? Because he's the best player on the field.
- 26:59Speaker 1: The case now, I know it was Simmons and others
- 27:03Speaker 1: that said, hey, if they're hungry, we're starving. Said that
- 27:05Speaker 1: to the Seahawks in the joint practice. This team is
- 27:08Speaker 1: starving for a leader that everyone else wants to follow.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons said in the podcast The Pivot with Ryan Clark,
- 27:17Speaker 1: told them, I went to Cam and said, this is
- 27:20Speaker 1: your team now. I may be the defensive leader, but
- 27:22Speaker 1: this is your team now. You need to take control
- 27:24Speaker 1: of it. Now's the time.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It's time to go. And instead, we hear things like this.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Here's Cam Ward earlier this week.
- 27:31Speaker 3: As time goes on, I think we'll be where we
- 27:32Speaker 3: want to be.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Are you personally at the floor as an NFL quarterback?
- 27:36Speaker 3: I think I'm a very good quarterback. I think I
- 27:38Speaker 3: do a lot of things different that a lot of
- 27:40Speaker 3: quarterbacks can't do. And it's also stuff that I have
- 27:43Speaker 3: to get better at as some things that I lack.
- 27:46Speaker 3: That's a process that you take on each and every day.
- 27:48Speaker 3: I have great coaches around me to continue to push
- 27:50Speaker 3: me to that level that I want to play at.
- 27:53Speaker 3: When the tide turns, I'm pretty sure it's going to
- 27:56Speaker 3: be a different story.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Doesn't a very good NFL quarterback have better results than
- 28:00Speaker 2: you're having? Say that again? Doesn't a very good NFL
- 28:02Speaker 2: quarterback have better results than you have? I think it
- 28:06Speaker 2: comes with the game.
- 28:06Speaker 3: It comes with the defensive plan. It comes with what
- 28:10Speaker 3: the D.C. 's philosophy is. Every game is not going
- 28:15Speaker 3: to be a shootout. Every game is going to be
- 28:16Speaker 3: a It could be a bad pass rate. It could
- 28:18Speaker 3: be a bad, you know, completion ratio. But it's all
- 28:21Speaker 3: about the win and loss. And, you know, we haven't
- 28:22Speaker 3: done that. And that's something that we only focus on
- 28:24Speaker 3: is winning and losing.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I mean, winning.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Chad, there's the we again instead of me, right? Yeah.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Well, he's really good about talking about the whole of
- 28:33Speaker 1: the team anytime he's personally questioned about his play. Boy,
- 28:37Speaker 1: it always goes back to the team then. You want
- 28:39Speaker 1: to deflect the team, Cam, when good things are happening.
- 28:43Speaker 1: And you want to say, man, my offensive line was great,
- 28:45Speaker 1: great team effort, this and that. You don't want to
- 28:47Speaker 1: take a question about your play and turn that to
- 28:51Speaker 1: the team and how the team needs to.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Be better around them.
- 28:54Speaker 1: And here's the other thing that's not going to help
- 28:56Speaker 1: Cam Ward. Josina Anderson and the Josina Andersons of the world.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Josina Anderson, I saw this tweet right before the show.
- 29:05Speaker 1: She posted that video of Paul Koharski asking Cam Ward
- 29:08Speaker 1: the question, right? And she says, the question from the
- 29:12Speaker 1: reporter to the Titans quarterback Cam Ward is phrased very
- 29:14Speaker 1: disrespectfully in that it feigns a lack of knowledge that
- 29:18Speaker 1: football is a team sport and that a quarterback performance
- 29:21Speaker 1: is also dependent on many others. Now, I watched that
- 29:24Speaker 1: game from beginning to end, and the broadcasters made many
- 29:27Speaker 1: comments throughout about the improvements also.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Needed on the O-line.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And on how much more Ward was rushed all day
- 29:33Speaker 1: in comparison to Geno Smith, among other issues contributing to
- 29:37Speaker 1: the offense's inability to sustain drives. was cam ward 100
- 29:41Speaker 1: perfect no but from the entirety of the game i
- 29:43Speaker 1: watched ward most definitely didn't deserve the phrasing of this
- 29:46Speaker 1: question though to his credit he handled it professionally i
- 29:50Speaker 1: mean look did the offensive line suck of course they
- 29:54Speaker 1: sucked why because they suck and they've sucked consistently for
- 29:58Speaker 1: the last two years right Cam Ward also has to
- 30:01Speaker 1: be better. And it's not going to help Cam Ward
- 30:04Speaker 1: or the Titans to continue to go back to talking
- 30:07Speaker 1: about the team's failures when he's failing also. And Cam
- 30:12Speaker 1: Ward can be better too. No one is saying everything
- 30:15Speaker 1: is Cam Ward's fault. I think people immediately go to
- 30:17Speaker 1: his defense to say, well, the offensive line or Mike
- 30:20Speaker 1: Borgonzi or Robert Salo or John Robinson.
- 30:23Speaker 2: John Robinson set.
- 30:24Speaker 1: This organization back many years ago, and they haven't been
- 30:27Speaker 1: able to recover since.
- 30:29Speaker 2: You've got to look at the quarterback.
- 30:31Speaker 1: You've got to look at the quarterback first, and then
- 30:32Speaker 1: everything else trickles down from that.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And this quarterback has got to improve.
- 30:37Speaker 1: What Josina Anderson didn't do is watch the preseason, where
- 30:40Speaker 1: we saw the same things. And so the questions are
- 30:42Speaker 1: warranted based on the preseason. And it said that Jared
- 30:46Speaker 1: Stolman gets banned for asking a question about the preseason performance. Chad,
- 30:51Speaker 1: this is how you take accountability. This is a great example.
- 30:54Speaker 1: This is Jack Campbell, and this is last night post-game.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Lions linebacker. And he's taking the blame for that defensive
- 31:04Speaker 1: effort that they gave against the Bills.
- 31:06Speaker 4: It starts with me. And I feel like it's on me.
- 31:14Speaker 4: I got to be better. And I ain't got no
- 31:18Speaker 4: other thing to do than look in the mirror and
- 31:20Speaker 4: be better. So that's really where it starts. It starts
- 31:22Speaker 4: with us. But, yeah, they did a good job.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Why do you wear this one so heavily on your
- 31:29Speaker 3: own shoulders?
- 31:30Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I don't know. Because he's a pro. That's why.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Because you get 17 of these. That's all that you're guaranteed.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And you work all year round for these 17 opportunities.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And when you go out in a big moment opening
- 31:50Speaker 1: a brand new stadium for another team... and you lay
- 31:53Speaker 1: an egg and get dominated defensively, that's how.
- 31:56Speaker 2: You should react to that.
- 31:58Speaker 1: That is a perfect example, Hutton, of accountability that you
- 32:01Speaker 1: mentioned that the Titans need more of. And they want
- 32:03Speaker 1: Canada to react like that by Week 18. The Lions
- 32:07Speaker 1: expect right now, right? Instead, here come the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Look at the flight from Philly to Nashville.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Jam-packed.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Here they come to Nissan Stadium. Get those percentage lists. Fly, Eagles, fly.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Here they come. On to victory. The Titans want that
- 32:27Speaker 2: tighten up chant to go. It's going to be drowned
- 32:29Speaker 2: out by the Fly, Eagles, fly. It's like Lincoln Financial
- 32:32Speaker 2: Field all over again.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I mean, it's going to be 60% to 70% Eagles fans,
- 32:37Speaker 1: and there's going to be 20,000 empty seats on top
- 32:39Speaker 1: of it.
- 32:39Speaker 2: That is my prediction.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So, I mean, looking at the capacity of Nissan Stadium,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I think there's going to be like 15,000 to 20,000
- 32:52Speaker 1: Titans fans there maybe.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's why last week was so important. Yeah.
- 32:58Speaker 1: To put that in perspective, I think the curb event
- 33:01Speaker 1: center has like 7,000 capacity. I think maybe a little
- 33:06Speaker 1: bit more than that will go watch an NFL team
- 33:09Speaker 1: in its own home city.
- 33:11Speaker 2: And I don't blame a single person.
- 33:13Speaker 1: No. It's going to be 99 degrees on Sunday in Nashville.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Thank God, by the way, fall weather is going to
- 33:18Speaker 1: get here late next week, finally. Jacob Lutz says curb
- 33:24Speaker 1: event center is only 5,000. I knew it was either
- 33:26Speaker 1: 5 or 10. I split the difference and said 7.
- 33:29Speaker 1: We make up the rules on this show, so we'll
- 33:30Speaker 1: make up fiction if we need to. I'm going to
- 33:32Speaker 1: go with 7,500. I'm imploring everybody at Belmont to raise
- 33:38Speaker 1: the capacity because I think Belmont could sell more tickets.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Than the Titans could to this game, quite frankly. That's
- 33:43Speaker 2: how bad it is.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Speaking of 5,000, that's exactly how much the announced attendance
- 33:47Speaker 1: was from a sellout last week.
- 33:49Speaker 2: 64,000? Not even close. Not even close.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And the fans that did go out last week, true
- 33:58Speaker 1: diehards if you do it again. Wasn't Don McLaughlin fired
- 34:02Speaker 1: for some issue? That was more about ticket brokers. and
- 34:06Speaker 1: season tickets being sold to ticket brokers. Well, either way,
- 34:09Speaker 1: I feel like there's some shadiness going on if you're
- 34:10Speaker 1: claiming 64,000 sold tickets to that game.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Because you're giving some of those away. Distributed, Chad. They've
- 34:18Speaker 2: papered the city. They've truly papered the city. You know
- 34:22Speaker 2: what they miss? They miss Derrick Henry. I miss Derrick Henry.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Is he the greatest running back?
- 34:32Speaker 1: To have the all-time career, high school, college, pro, if
- 34:35Speaker 1: you combine everything, who's comparable to Derrick Henry?
- 34:40Speaker 2: It's impressive. It's insane, really. We discuss next on Huntington Withrow.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Coming up, we have Chad Withrow's top 10 games of
- 34:48Speaker 1: the college football weekend. A perfect 10 for you. A
- 34:51Speaker 1: slate that is, bar none, the best preview across college football.
- 34:56Speaker 1: And Perfect 10 Mortgage, the name says it all. Apply
- 34:59Speaker 1: in 10 minutes, close in 10 days. That's the whole
- 35:01Speaker 1: idea here. A mortgage that's simple, fast, and fair. 10 minutes,
- 35:04Speaker 1: start to finish, right from your phone. There's no stack
- 35:07Speaker 1: of paperwork. And Chad, you don't have to sit across
- 35:09Speaker 1: a desk from a banker who's talking down to you.
- 35:12Speaker 2: No, you don't.
- 35:12Speaker 1: You're going to talk to a human being who cares
- 35:14Speaker 1: about your financial situation, who's going to get you in
- 35:17Speaker 1: the right spot. And they're going to tell you, Hutton,
- 35:20Speaker 1: Date the rate, marry the house. You can put that
- 35:22Speaker 1: on a t-shirt, however you need to remember it, do it.
- 35:25Speaker 1: And if you're juggling credit card debt, they can help
- 35:27Speaker 1: with that as well. And if you're buying new construction,
- 35:29Speaker 1: ask about the builder program, builder funded rate buy downs
- 35:32Speaker 1: that can get you a rate the bank can't print.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Date the rate, marry the house, get the house you
- 35:36Speaker 1: want now. Refinance and rates come down. Straight talk on
- 35:39Speaker 1: what you actually qualify for. Built for real people, not paperwork.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Perfect10mortgage. com or call 855-789-1010. That's perfect10mortgage.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Com.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Perfect 10 Mortgage is an equal housing lender. Perfect 10 Mortgage,
- 35:52Speaker 1: the DBA or network funding LP, NMLS number 2297, equal
- 35:55Speaker 1: housing lender. All borrowers must qualify. This advertisement is not
- 35:58Speaker 1: a promise to make alone. Chad, Robert Sala may want
- 36:02Speaker 1: to put the date, the rate, marry the house. That's
- 36:04Speaker 1: his next gimmick. Yeah, Xavier Estrepo is going to show
- 36:06Speaker 1: up at the facility today wearing that on a T-shirt,
- 36:09Speaker 1: I think, instead of 60%. Also, very convenient of Xavier
- 36:13Speaker 1: Estrepo to just go and screen print a T-shirt of
- 36:16Speaker 1: what his coach is saying, a guy who's barely hanging
- 36:18Speaker 1: on to the roster. I was thinking like, boy, what
- 36:21Speaker 1: a good way to be the teacher's pet. I'm going
- 36:23Speaker 1: to start making my own sofa T-shirts, smart, original, funny, authentic,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and just wear it on the show. And I'm like, hey, Clay,
- 36:31Speaker 1: look at me, buddy. Look at me. I preach what
- 36:34Speaker 1: you're talking about. I'm putting sofa on my T-shirt.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Please, please.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Dad, you know it's bad when a practice squad player
- 36:41Speaker 1: is making T-shirts at the facility. That's when it's really
- 36:47Speaker 1: going downhill right there. One of the fan favorites, though.
- 36:51Speaker 2: But I will say also, you know what I don't
- 36:52Speaker 2: doubt about Xavier Estrepo? Effort. No.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Ever.
- 36:55Speaker 1: That guy is getting absolutely everything. out of his body
- 36:59Speaker 1: at all times. It's like the great Petey Bell in
- 37:02Speaker 1: blue chips. When he's in the press conference, he says
- 37:05Speaker 1: that my favorite team to coach was last year's team.
- 37:08Speaker 1: And they went 500 on the season, but they gave
- 37:10Speaker 1: me everything. I knew I got everything they have, but
- 37:13Speaker 1: it wasn't good enough. Wasn't good enough for you. Wasn't
- 37:16Speaker 1: good enough for me. It wasn't good enough for anybody.
- 37:18Speaker 1: That's what I think when I think about Xavier Strepo.
- 37:20Speaker 1: If you could take his work ethic and and heart
- 37:24Speaker 1: and put it in Calvin Ridley's body or Carnell Tate's body,
- 37:30Speaker 1: and you could replicate that by 53, then you'd have
- 37:33Speaker 1: a Super Bowl champion. Don't do Wendell Robinson. You'll have
- 37:38Speaker 1: Cam overthrow you too high on that. I need more inches.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I need a few more inches than Wandel Robinson.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You need Megatron.
- 37:47Speaker 1: You need someone like a Hall of Famer, which is
- 37:51Speaker 1: where Derrick Henry is running towards, the Pro Football Hall
- 37:55Speaker 1: of Fame in Canton.
- 37:56Speaker 2: The numbers speak for themselves.
- 37:57Speaker 1: He's now third all-time in rushing touchdowns. He reached that
- 38:01Speaker 1: mark in Week 1 with that long touchdown run. He's
- 38:06Speaker 1: always been way, way faster than what you expect. But
- 38:10Speaker 1: even right now at his age, he still has that
- 38:15Speaker 1: next gear. You can see it on that touchdown run
- 38:17Speaker 1: in week one, Chad. We've got some props coming up
- 38:21Speaker 1: later from Hard Rock Bet. He's always one to watch
- 38:25Speaker 1: out for on the anytime touchdown. You always lead his way.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And Vegas knows that. They always have the odds in
- 38:36Speaker 1: their favor.
- 38:37Speaker 2: But ever... Very much so when it comes to Derrick Henry.
- 38:41Speaker 2: He's going to score.
- 38:42Speaker 1: And he's going to show the effort week in and
- 38:45Speaker 1: week out. Maybe he's bottled up, maybe he's not. But
- 38:48Speaker 1: you can't bottle up the stats for the career. And
- 38:50Speaker 1: we're not talking just NFL career. But Chad, Sporting State
- 38:54Speaker 1: had this posted last night. Is Derrick Henry the most
- 38:59Speaker 1: accomplished running back of all time across every level of football?
- 39:04Speaker 1: From high school, college, and the NFL. The stats are staggering.
- 39:08Speaker 2: What?
- 39:08Speaker 1: Everyone's seen what he did, what you lead in high
- 39:13Speaker 1: school with 12,000 plus yards. How many touchdowns did he
- 39:17Speaker 1: have in his career there? So I've got the stats here, Hutton,
- 39:20Speaker 1: if you'd like me to read them off. In high school,
- 39:23Speaker 1: national career rushing record, 12,124 yards, 153 touchdowns.
- 39:26Speaker 2: There you go.
- 39:26Speaker 1: 2012.
- 39:30Speaker 2: National Player of the Year.
- 39:31Speaker 1: In college, Heisman Trophy winner, national champion, Maxwell Award, Doak
- 39:37Speaker 1: Walker Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year, 3,591 yards,
- 39:42Speaker 1: 42 rushing touchdowns in college.
- 39:44Speaker 2: So far in the NFL, career's not over yet.
- 39:47Speaker 1: AP offensive player of the year, two-time NFL rushing champion,
- 39:51Speaker 1: a 2,000-yard season, five 1,500-yard seasons tied for the NFL record,
- 39:56Speaker 1: 13,162 yards, 10th all-time, 125 rushing touchdowns, third all-time, career,
- 39:58Speaker 1: 28,877 rushing yards, and 320 rushing touchdowns. Those 320 rushing
- 40:01Speaker 1: touchdowns this past weekend launched him into third all-time. behind
- 40:16Speaker 1: Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson for most rushing touchdowns. He
- 40:19Speaker 1: is the only running back in NFL history to have
- 40:22Speaker 1: two seasons of at least 1,900 yards. We always have
- 40:26Speaker 1: the line of 2,000. He nearly got there with the
- 40:30Speaker 1: first running back of all time to have two different
- 40:33Speaker 1: 2,000-yard seasons, but he's the only running.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Back to do it at 1,900.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Chad, the other fascinating part of his career is he
- 40:42Speaker 1: was behind DeMarco Murray for the first two years.
- 40:46Speaker 2: It took a kick in the ass from Eddie George
- 40:48Speaker 2: to get him going.
- 40:50Speaker 1: And then once he got going, he was the face
- 40:53Speaker 1: of the franchise, the best player of the franchise. Just
- 40:56Speaker 1: look at what he's done on paper and what he
- 40:59Speaker 1: meant to that team.
- 41:01Speaker 2: And man, they had.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Such a good team in 2019-2020, looking back on that.
- 41:07Speaker 1: With the 2,000-yard rusher, they should have had two different
- 41:11Speaker 1: 1,000-yard receivers.
- 41:12Speaker 2: But had one. And a 400-yard rusher.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Receiving tight end, a 4,000-yard passer in Tannehill. I mean,
- 41:21Speaker 1: it is because of him with the play action and
- 41:23Speaker 1: just the fact that he would just mow you down.
- 41:25Speaker 2: The stiff arm, fantastic.
- 41:28Speaker 1: But the combined career, you immediately go to the players
- 41:32Speaker 1: that are right above him, right, in the career yardage.
- 41:35Speaker 1: And there's a huge gap there between Emmitt Smith and
- 41:37Speaker 1: everyone else.
- 41:38Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 41:39Speaker 1: But, Chad, the comps would be Tony Dorsett and Marcus Allen.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Let's start with Dorsett. High school, he's the Pennsylvania State
- 41:49Speaker 1: champ and high school All-American. I don't have stats there
- 41:52Speaker 1: for him. He won the Heisman Trophy and the National
- 41:55Speaker 1: Championship in college. He's a four-time first-team All-American, and he
- 42:03Speaker 1: held the NCAA all-time rushing record upon graduating college. There
- 42:08Speaker 1: is Marcus Allen, California State title winner. He played quarterback
- 42:13Speaker 1: in high school and safety. uh, national championship winner, won
- 42:17Speaker 1: the Heisman. So there, there's your comps. And then he
- 42:20Speaker 1: goes on, both are NFL hall of famers. Derek Henry
- 42:23Speaker 1: is going to get there too. Um, NFL MVP for
- 42:26Speaker 1: Marcus Allen, um, Superbowl champ, offensive rookie of the year. Uh,
- 42:31Speaker 1: the stats are there, right? Um, I'm sure Herschel Walker
- 42:35Speaker 1: was also comes to mind. Um, But the pro career,
- 42:39Speaker 1: not even close.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Not the same.
- 42:40Speaker 1: But the high school and college career, that just pops
- 42:43Speaker 1: to my mind. I don't know what the stats were,
- 42:45Speaker 1: but Bo Jackson, he had to have dominated in high school.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Had to have.
- 42:50Speaker 1: But again, we're talking pro career as well. I'm taking
- 42:54Speaker 1: Derrick Henry or one of the other two, either Dorsett
- 42:56Speaker 1: or Marcus Allen.
- 43:00Speaker 2: The one that came to mind for me was Jim Brown.
- 43:03Speaker 1: When you think about legendary running backs that did so
- 43:07Speaker 1: much in the sport. Now, he retired pretty early in
- 43:11Speaker 1: the NFL, but was a legend by the time he retired.
- 43:14Speaker 1: I was shocked to see that in 1956, Jim Brown
- 43:16Speaker 1: finished fifth in the Heisman voting. We're not one to
- 43:20Speaker 1: cry racism all the time on this show, but pretty
- 43:23Speaker 1: sure there was probably some racial overtones that had Jim
- 43:26Speaker 1: Brown fifth in a legendary record-breaking season he had at
- 43:29Speaker 1: Syracuse that year.
- 43:31Speaker 2: To not win the Heisman Trophy.
- 43:32Speaker 1: So I cannot penalize Jim Brown for being the victim
- 43:36Speaker 1: of probably a racist vote that he doesn't win the
- 43:39Speaker 1: Heisman in 1956. But, man, oh, man, what a career
- 43:43Speaker 1: for Jim Brown. And that's one of the guys I
- 43:45Speaker 1: put in the same category. But I think Brooks with
- 43:49Speaker 1: what he posted and those– I mean, you look at
- 43:53Speaker 1: every level, high school, college– NFL, every level that matters.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And it's tough to stack those three levels of it.
- 44:01Speaker 2: It's nuts, man. And have that type of production.
- 44:03Speaker 1: I mean, he very well might be the greatest high school,
- 44:06Speaker 1: college to NFL running back of all time.
- 44:08Speaker 2: And then just the speed, the sheer size of him.
- 44:11Speaker 2: And then the speed.
- 44:12Speaker 1: And the way he runs the football. It's not always
- 44:16Speaker 1: just downhill grinder, you know? He's the bell cow, but
- 44:20Speaker 1: he's also great in open space.
- 44:23Speaker 2: You know, just.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Ask some of the Bills defensive backs, for instance. Yeah, man,
- 44:30Speaker 1: I just think of what he would have done had
- 44:33Speaker 1: he started his pro career like he did year three
- 44:36Speaker 1: with the Titans, when things just clicked. Maybe he doesn't
- 44:39Speaker 1: have the longevity that he's had to this point. I'm
- 44:43Speaker 1: sure that's helped. But, man, everyone's counted him out since
- 44:48Speaker 1: he turned 30. He's 29. The Titans thought they were
- 44:50Speaker 1: going to get him a year. They're going to get
- 44:52Speaker 1: ahead of his career by a year. A year early
- 44:55Speaker 1: instead of a year late. And Baltimore keeps resigning him.
- 44:58Speaker 1: I mean, I hope for his sake he wins a
- 45:02Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 45:06Speaker 2: I do, too.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I'm not a big Ravens guy, but for his sake, personally,
- 45:13Speaker 1: I would like to see him win one.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Jim Brown in 1956. I'm just looking at these stats.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Was that the Paul Horning year or who won that? No,
- 45:20Speaker 2: Paul Horning was 55. 55.
- 45:22Speaker 1: That's when he robbed it from Johnny Majors. But in 56,
- 45:27Speaker 1: finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy. They played eight games.
- 45:29Speaker 1: They had a shortened season for some reason. Syracuse did. Okay,
- 45:32Speaker 1: but he was still, he averaged 6.2 yards per carry.
- 45:36Speaker 1: He was third in the nation in rushing, having played
- 45:39Speaker 1: two fewer games than the other people on the list.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Wow.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Scored 14 touchdowns.
- 45:45Speaker 1: In the regular season finale, they beat Colgate 61-7. He
- 45:49Speaker 1: rushed for 197 and scored six touchdowns. He kicked seven
- 45:53Speaker 1: extra points in that game. He was their kicker also.
- 45:57Speaker 1: For a then NCAA record, 43 points in the game.
- 46:00Speaker 1: In the Cotton Bowl, he rushed for 132 yards, scored
- 46:04Speaker 1: three touchdowns, and kicked three extra points. But a blocked
- 46:08Speaker 1: extra point after Syracuse's third touchdown was the difference between
- 46:11Speaker 1: As TCU, shout out Coach Maddox, 28-27 gets the win
- 46:17Speaker 1: because Jim Brown had an extra point blocked on his
- 46:21Speaker 1: final attempt as the kicker for the game also.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Jim Brown, legend. Yes, absolutely. He was like a world-class
- 46:30Speaker 2: lacrosse player. Yeah, he was.
- 46:32Speaker 1: The people that covered lacrosse then and wrote about it
- 46:35Speaker 1: said he could have been the greatest lacrosse player ever
- 46:37Speaker 1: to live.
- 46:37Speaker 2: That is nuts, man. And he continued doing it. That's crazy.
- 46:42Speaker 1: One final thing on Henry. The one thing I really
- 46:44Speaker 1: appreciate with him, he's just straight business. He's not into
- 46:49Speaker 1: the trash talk or all the bling or showing off
- 46:54Speaker 1: the money. He just shows up and goes to work.
- 46:57Speaker 1: He leads by example. He never had to point the
- 47:00Speaker 1: blame on himself unless he was fumbling. He wasn't making
- 47:06Speaker 1: those mistakes, and the team followed him. Again, this team
- 47:09Speaker 1: misses those guys. Coming up, the top 10 games of
- 47:14Speaker 1: the college football weekend. Who will be number one? I
- 47:16Speaker 1: wonder if we're attending that game, Chad. I wonder if
- 47:18Speaker 1: we're attending LSU Ole Miss. And that's number one on
- 47:22Speaker 1: the list. Fair guess on your point. It's a good
- 47:24Speaker 1: hypothesis you've reached. And I also will bring you the
- 47:28Speaker 1: fight song matchup of the week based on your games.
- 47:31Speaker 1: We've got that next here on Hutton & Withrow.
