- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? There aren't any dead people in
- 0:12the suburbs. Welcome to What's Your Least
- 0:14Favorite Scary Movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:16the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd and all of our
- 0:19favorite. And least favorite scary movies?
- 0:21Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has its fan
- 0:23base. Even if we don't always get it.
- 0:25My name's Travis. My name's Jesse and welcome back
- 0:28to our monthly bonus series To be Our, Not to Be.
- 0:31We are live, we are uncut, and we are mostly undrawn.
- 0:35This is our monthly bonus series where we go through the free
- 0:37streaming services and find maybe those hidden gems that
- 0:41we've never seen before. Yeah, perhaps.
- 0:43Maybe we found 1 today even. We shall see, yeah.
- 0:46We shall see. It was my month to pick
- 0:50everybody and as always, I usually end up with the October
- 0:54month, so I go for the spooky. You get October, I get prom.
- 0:58Yeah, I'm, I'm OK with that trade off.
- 1:02So I wanted to go with a a Halloween themed 1 and Jacko
- 1:07just kind of popped up one day and I was like hey what's that
- 1:10about? That really sounds like somebody
- 1:12saying like like it could be at Diablo Cody of just saying
- 1:17nothing, striking out nil 0, not a.
- 1:20Jacko Yeah. Well, that's how some people
- 1:23feel about this. Not even.
- 1:25But yeah, Jacko, that's what we're talking about today.
- 1:29I'm sure some of you are aware of it.
- 1:30Maybe you're not aware of it. We're going to change that
- 1:33today. Yes, for better or for worse,
- 1:34is. It very At the very least, you
- 1:36are aware that this is a movie that exists now.
- 1:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:38So. But before we get into that, do
- 1:41we have anything you need to announce?
- 1:42No, this is a bonus. We don't do all that.
- 1:44We don't do announcements on those.
- 1:45OK. Whoa.
- 1:47OK. It's also live, so that's not
- 1:49gonna be cut out. So, all right, let's get on into
- 1:52Jacko, then. OK, First off, I'll tell you why
- 1:56I picked this one, OK? I am.
- 2:00I was, like, somewhat aware of the reputation of this movie.
- 2:03It doesn't have a good one, but I was curious, you know,
- 2:08sometimes those movies have potential to be dumb fun, or
- 2:12maybe they're just dumb dumb. And I wanted to find out for
- 2:15sure about this one. So yeah, I went with this one.
- 2:18I went with Jacko here. OK.
- 2:21Jacko released October 10th, 1995.
- 2:25Meaning Jesse, the day that we watched this for the show, we
- 2:28watched it on its 20th anniversary.
- 2:31Well, how I know. I can't believe it actually
- 2:34happened that way. But hey, you know what?
- 2:36That's the way to do it. We watched it on Tubie.
- 2:38You can watch it on Tubie, too. I don't know where else you can
- 2:41watch it because, yeah, this is a tubie.
- 2:44Or not to be so. This was written by Patrick
- 2:47Moran, who did the screenplay with Story by Fred Olin Ray and
- 2:51Brad Little Weaver. Directed by Steve Lashaw, music
- 2:56by Jeffrey Walton and special effects makeup by Todd Palmer.
- 3:00OK, starring Ryan Lashaw as Sean and Andrew Kelly, Catherine
- 3:06Walsh as Vivian, Gary Doles as David Kelly, Madison Crown as
- 3:11Linda Kelly, Linnea Quigley as Carolyn, Rachel Carter as Julie,
- 3:16Tom Ferda as Jim and Patrick Moran as Jacko.
- 3:20All right, fine, fine. Time for our favorite game on
- 3:24the show. Budget or button?
- 3:26Oh well. This.
- 3:28Is this is incredibly bug Ted and the director hates
- 3:30everybody? Yeah, not because, well, partly
- 3:33for that actually. Yeah, kind of because of the the
- 3:36low budget in this of this movie, but yeah, this is 100% a
- 3:40bug. Ted, I don't have the budget for
- 3:42this, but you can look at it and you can just listen to snippets
- 3:46of the the director and producer audio commentary.
- 3:50Pissed off as he is, my estimation is a handful of
- 3:54nickels and some pocket lint. Yeah, he yeah.
- 3:58OK, like, all right, so here's one of the things, OK, we don't
- 4:02go into, we don't deep dive on 2BS or not 2 BS.
- 4:05But I was curious because I was looking through this movie and I
- 4:10just kept seeing mentions of how heated the commentary track is
- 4:15for this. It's one of the it's probably
- 4:17more notorious for that than is the movie itself.
- 4:21And we listen to like a 15 minute like compilation of some
- 4:25of the most tense moments and Fred Olin Ray and Steve Lashaw
- 4:30just fucking hate each other. It's it's impressive, it's
- 4:34really entertaining. I recommend anybody out there
- 4:37like listen to these clips. I.
- 4:39Think the commentary honestly might be more fun than the movie
- 4:42itself. Yeah, I think like if I were to
- 4:44ever do a rewatch of this, I want to do it with the
- 4:46commentary always. Yeah.
- 4:49But, you know, I'm sure we'll we'll have moments to kind of
- 4:54shine a light on how tense that was when we're talking about the
- 4:56movie. But yeah.
- 4:58All right. So I have three other movies
- 5:00from 1995 to compare it to. I went with Deadly Foods.
- 5:03Nice is just, even though we're not using pumpkin in the context
- 5:09of eating it is that. It is still a food that is being
- 5:14used in deadly fashions. It's deadly fashion for you
- 5:17always because you're allergic. Yeah, pumpkin.
- 5:20I can't have it, you know? And I resent everybody that can
- 5:24have pumpkin and enjoy it because it does taste good, you
- 5:27included. I'm sorry.
- 5:30Same thing with strawberry. You know, I I don't like you if
- 5:33you can eat those things and I can't.
- 5:35OK. Well, you're the only reason
- 5:36that we still have cinnamon in this house, so.
- 5:38Well hey, I never said I wasn't a hypocrite.
- 5:44OK, so the first movie is Blood and Doughnuts.
- 5:48That is, that's about, from what I gathered, a vampire falling in
- 5:52love with somebody that works at a donut shop.
- 5:55Honestly same if I was a vampire.
- 6:00Speaking of donut shops and cinnamon, we went to one
- 6:03yesterday and Jesse couldn't have one because the only vegan
- 6:05donut was cinnamon based and pumpkin base.
- 6:08Really didn't say much. Like we walked up to the
- 6:11counter, saw that and the person behind the counter goes hi and
- 6:14we're like bye and just walked away.
- 6:16And I don't know what went through her head in that moment.
- 6:18In fact, we went to the shop right across the street.
- 6:22So like, what the fuck happened? What did we do to offend them?
- 6:26That came out September 9th 1995.
- 6:29I don't have the budget but I made $350,000 and a 5.9 on IMDb.
- 6:34Forgot to mention the I don't have any of the financials
- 6:37obviously for this movie Jacko but the IMDb is 3.5.
- 6:42Really. Yeah, that high.
- 6:44Rarely do I look at that IMDb. That's a high rating.
- 6:49Or fair, like, you know, good. Like I'm usually like, pump the
- 6:54numbers up. But I think, OK, let's, let's
- 6:57reserve talk for that here in a second movie #2 Candyman 2,
- 7:02Farewell to the Flesh. Oh, OK.
- 7:04Yeah. Candy again, not, you know,
- 7:07really being used here, but I don't know why.
- 7:11Why is he called the Candyman? Sweets to the sweet.
- 7:15But he never he just has like bees.
- 7:19Read your fucking back sheet. OK, I'm don't go off script.
- 7:23OK fine. That came out March 17th, 1990.
- 7:27Five $6 million budget $13 million gross 5.3 out of 10
- 7:32IMDb. OK movie #3 Jesse on script.
- 7:39Movie #3 Ice cream man. OK.
- 7:42That released May 9th, 1995 with a $2 million budget.
- 7:46Don't have the gross directive. Video IMDb 4.8 out of 10.
- 7:52Oh, Clint Howard. Yeah, Clint Howard, he he did
- 7:56his best. There's another guy that got mad
- 7:58about the movie that he was in there.
- 7:59He. I know, that's why I'm afraid to
- 8:01say anything else about it because.
- 8:03You don't want to offend him. He does not like a loving send
- 8:07up. No, he, yeah.
- 8:13OK, so I got some tag lines here.
- 8:16First one, he's back. It's like 3A's in there, so you
- 8:20have to draw it out a little bit.
- 8:23Back from where? From the grave?
- 8:25That only really works as a sequel tag line.
- 8:29Yeah, I agree. But he does rise from the grave,
- 8:31so I guess, I guess from. The grave.
- 8:36Too. And the second one, it's harvest
- 8:38time. It's Mormon time.
- 8:47It just, I don't know, I, I feel bad for Steve Lashaw 'cause he
- 8:52seems like he really wanted this thing to be like a big thing,
- 8:55but it seems like everybody else just like, half baked everything
- 8:59related to this movie. He was the only one that cared.
- 9:02Yeah, I think. I don't know.
- 9:06OK, even from what we heard of the commentary, his son wasn't
- 9:09even that into it. Yeah.
- 9:10His son plays the lead role. Yeah, it's funny.
- 9:14He's like, he asked his son, I was like, OK, do you want to do
- 9:17the Western movie that you only shoot for four days, or do you
- 9:19want to be a lead in a movie that you shoot on weekends?
- 9:22And he's like, I want to do the West.
- 9:25Man tried to emotionally manipulate his own child.
- 9:28It's. Like, too bad you're doing my
- 9:29movie. You're going to wake up at 2:00
- 9:32AM and do takes in the middle of the night on your weekends.
- 9:36Why else would I have children? Man.
- 9:41Just like in the olden days. And that's why families used to
- 9:43have kids, just to carry on the families.
- 9:45And if you were wondering, does the commentary go into personal
- 9:48attacks on his son? Yes, it does.
- 9:51Fred Olin Ray is like, yeah, he's usually carrying a gun
- 9:53these days. And he's like, all right, let's
- 9:55leave the kids out of this. All right, let's leave the
- 9:56family out of this. Jesus Christ, the poor kids.
- 10:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, so let's do our good, bad,
- 10:04ugly and absurd. OK, All right.
- 10:06Is that it? Just those two tag lines.
- 10:08That's it. Yeah.
- 10:09My God. Yeah.
- 10:10None of them are even on the poster.
- 10:13OK. Good.
- 10:15I mean, Linnea Quigley is always worth at least a point, yeah.
- 10:20And they argued over her, even. Yeah, the.
- 10:24First shot of her and she's naked.
- 10:25I was like, yeah, it's Linnea Quigley.
- 10:27They were arguing like it was like it could have been placed a
- 10:29little bit better. And I'm like, I don't know, man.
- 10:31Like you like Fred, Owen, Ray. Standard Linnea quickly.
- 10:34Fred Owen Ray, he came across like I this is the first I've
- 10:37ever heard him speak. He came across as a real one.
- 10:39He's like, well, if like her fans, like, that's what they
- 10:42expect. If you don't put that kind of
- 10:44scene in a movie with her, it's been really Linnea.
- 10:46Yeah. And it's like, nobody's going to
- 10:48care where it's placed. Like it's just a naked Linnea
- 10:50Quigley. And at least in the shower or it
- 10:52makes. Sense Yeah, it does.
- 10:54Like she's not just like, you know, rubbing her butt in boobs
- 10:56like in like the fucking dressing room, You know what I
- 10:58mean? It, I mean, it's a really
- 11:00inefficient shower for showering purposes, but for Linnea Quigley
- 11:05body ogling purposes, that's where we're at.
- 11:07Yeah, that's that's how it is. OK, so there's that.
- 11:11I think there were some fun moments in it, like the stuff
- 11:15with the the to, to steal a phrase from one of our friends,
- 11:23the patriotic household. Oh, is that what you call it?
- 11:27Yeah, yeah, there's, it's a couple of patriots that live
- 11:30there. They.
- 11:32That's one way to put it. They their bits were fun because
- 11:37they were obviously just meant to be kind of like little side
- 11:39characters and add to the Canon fodder.
- 11:42So I thought those parts were interesting.
- 11:45I think that this creepy lady that showed up, I thought her in
- 11:49the first half was a lot more fun.
- 11:50I don't think the payoff worked out.
- 11:52I think they forgot about her motivation.
- 11:55Yeah, halfway through. Honestly, and I, I loved
- 11:59honestly, this did feel like 1990s Halloween though.
- 12:03Like I even told you, I remember going into all of the haunted
- 12:06houses and people's garages and I was like, you can't do that in
- 12:092025. You can't just be like, hey,
- 12:12come into my garage. It's totally cool.
- 12:14Like people don't do that anymore.
- 12:16Yeah, I questioned you on that. But then I remembered I was
- 12:19actually like an actor in one of those, like one of my friends,
- 12:23like actually had one of those made-up.
- 12:25Oh, we made one in one of my friend's garages.
- 12:27Really. We made a whole maze and
- 12:29everything for it. So people had to come in and
- 12:31they'd be scared and then I'd leave.
- 12:32Yeah, you know, you're right. I actually had the same trick or
- 12:36treat outfit as the kid, like the prisoner outfit.
- 12:39I did that one year for Halloween.
- 12:41Yeah, you're right. This is a very 90s Halloween.
- 12:43Yeah. And I think that's just, this is
- 12:45such a special time capsule. There's, I'm trying not to be
- 12:49like that old person I was like back in my day.
- 12:51Like I, I do have nostalgia for that.
- 12:54I understand why things have changed.
- 12:55It makes me sad. But hopefully, like our nieces
- 12:59and nephews are going to have fond memories of their own
- 13:02Halloweens and trick or treatings when they're older and
- 13:04they'll be able to appreciate like what the kids are getting
- 13:08these days now. You know what I mean?
- 13:09Like understand that it's different for them.
- 13:11And I don't want to, I want to ruin it for them.
- 13:13But I'd be like man, you you know nothing about trick or
- 13:16treating. Is it permanently trunk or
- 13:18treats now? Is that how everybody does it
- 13:21now? I don't know.
- 13:21I don't think it's permanently trick or treats.
- 13:23Those are a lot more common, but we still get trick or treaters
- 13:28in our neighborhood. It's definitely easier on like
- 13:31the Halloween weekends. You know, it's also the fact I
- 13:36maybe they did it like this. I always remember trick or
- 13:38treating on actual Halloween day, but now they like schedule
- 13:41weekends. Like, all right, it's October
- 13:4321st, but this is when we're trick or treating this year.
- 13:46And that's always super weird. And we we've got.
- 13:49A lot of like parents driving their kids, which I understand
- 13:51with the little ones, but also I don't because I we we're in a
- 13:56walkable neighborhood. Yeah, we are.
- 13:58We're in a walkable neighborhood, but again, things
- 14:02are the way they are and all we can do is just try and have like
- 14:07a fun yard and be the house that's like scary and always has
- 14:10good candy like. Yeah, we do our.
- 14:12Best, that's what we do, and we're making it work for us as
- 14:15adults in the new trick or treating landscape, and that's
- 14:18all you can do. That had nothing to do with the
- 14:21movie. End rant.
- 14:22End rant. Back on.
- 14:24Scrape Travis. Yeah, OK.
- 14:27Well, man, it's hard, man, OK, it sucks because this is the
- 14:35kind of movie they like. I feel like I would like to.
- 14:37Love, I want to love this. Yeah, I do too.
- 14:39But holy shit, this movie was hard to love.
- 14:41But I there are some things I did like about it.
- 14:44I really do like the Jacko character.
- 14:48That was one of the things that did draw me in because I watched
- 14:50the trailer before I picked this.
- 14:51It's like, oh, that looks like a fun slasher villain right there.
- 14:55I like how it's a glow like the Jack O Lantern actually has the
- 14:58candle inside of the. Head, yeah, glowing eyes and
- 15:00everything and like, yeah, you know, he actually has like the
- 15:03pumpkin head thing and he's. Got like the vines coming out of
- 15:06him. I think that the honest.
- 15:07Side has a weapon. The character design for Jacko
- 15:10is great. Yeah, that was the thing that
- 15:12drew me into this movie The most.
- 15:14And you know, like he goes about OK enough in this movie.
- 15:20So they had they had that going. I will say I think this may have
- 15:24been Renee Quigley's best acting work ever.
- 15:28She's not a strong actor. I always say that.
- 15:30But like, I was a charisma. She played a different type of
- 15:34character this time. She played the responsible
- 15:36character. And I'm not used to seeing her
- 15:37being that person. She's always the irresponsible
- 15:40person. Is this, is this the key?
- 15:43Because I feel like we said the same thing about Sharia Moon
- 15:45Zombie and Rob Zombie's Halloween.
- 15:47We're like, she's a mother, she gets to be maternal.
- 15:48She's so sweet and caring. This is her best acting.
- 15:51Yeah, OK, I was going to say, but she did.
- 15:54She did do a strip. Yeah.
- 15:55But then again, we saw Lydia Quigley with.
- 15:57The children she needed to get money for her house.
- 16:00Yeah, but she also kind of prostituted herself there
- 16:02towards the end. She needed money.
- 16:05OK, she did. But I I was going to say also we
- 16:07got Renee Quigley showering here too.
- 16:09So like, you know, it's the same thing applies.
- 16:11You're right. That's about it for the good.
- 16:17I could say unfortunately. OK, So what?
- 16:21What's bad? What what did not work for this?
- 16:24This movie felt like it really wanted to be the next
- 16:28Pumpkinhead. Yeah, that was one of the things
- 16:31I saw. It gets a lot of comparisons to
- 16:33Pumpkinhead. And I think part of the problem
- 16:36with this movie is he overcomplicated it.
- 16:39He did. There are way too many elements
- 16:42to this. I think this works better if
- 16:44it's just simpler and then, like you said, Vivian.
- 16:50OK. I thought that was going to make
- 16:51a sound because normally the popups make a sound.
- 16:56The Vivian character, it seems like she was related to the
- 16:59murderer, So I thought she was going to end up being like, a
- 17:02secondary big bad. Yeah.
- 17:05And that's not how that ended up happening.
- 17:07And we just don't really get a lot of information about that.
- 17:11There are just random things that happen, like why is there a
- 17:13neighbor taking Sean into the woods to tell scary stories?
- 17:18They. Never got an explanation for
- 17:20that. Yeah, we we don't, and I truly
- 17:24don't understand either. They filmed that after
- 17:26everything else, even like I I don't know, he's like we need to
- 17:29like we need to fucking kick start this movie.
- 17:32We need to get like this old man and get this child alone in the
- 17:35woods and old bad. Also, Robert Carradine was in
- 17:40the opening credits. David.
- 17:43Or David Carradine. No, no.
- 17:45Robert Carradine, you're right. OK, OK.
- 17:46It's his dad. Oh, they're both, Roberts.
- 17:50I is David, Short for Robert. I'm so confused I thought I had
- 17:55the name mixed up and then you're like no Robert and I'm
- 17:58confused. The guy that you, the guy that
- 18:00you were thinking of, the Carradine from Kill Bill that
- 18:03plays Bill, it's his dad that's in this movie.
- 18:06OK. Which one is Robert?
- 18:07Which one's David? Got it.
- 18:08Now you're going to make me do it.
- 18:09OK, I was going to try. There's such generic names I
- 18:12can't keep track. OK, hold on a second.
- 18:16Oh thank God I still have the IMDb for Jacko pulled up on my
- 18:18phone here I. Hope that your algorithm gets
- 18:22skewed exclusively exclusively to Jacko type.
- 18:27Wouldn't hate it, it's John Carradine.
- 18:31John Carradine. He plays Walter Mac Machen,
- 18:35Macon Macon Macon. I don't think it's Macon Machen.
- 18:41She never, she never says that. It's always like, because I
- 18:45remember I wrote down her name is Vivian Mackie at first.
- 18:48Okay, Mackin. Yeah, okay.
- 18:50Well, yeah, and I was reading that apparently they filmed his
- 18:54scenes eight years before the movie, and I don't understand
- 18:59how that works. This movie came out after he
- 19:01died, that's why. Every time we saw Walter in the
- 19:04dream, his mouth wasn't moving. You thought it was because it
- 19:07was a mask. It was the, the, the bottom part
- 19:11of the mask didn't move like you could see, but like the top
- 19:14half, like I, I don't know, maybe it maybe it wasn't, I
- 19:17don't know. This is all very confusing and
- 19:19that's what I'm saying. Like a movie like this shouldn't
- 19:21be this confusing. Yeah, regardless if you can't
- 19:24remember which Carradine is which like this, there's there
- 19:28is too much happening in this and none of it has a really
- 19:33satisfying pay off. Yeah.
- 19:35There's also a couple of moments where like, I want to give this
- 19:39movie credit and then it ruins it for me because there is this
- 19:43is one of those movies that explains like why sound design
- 19:47is so important and why music is so important.
- 19:51Cuz a lot of times it just feels awkward.
- 19:56And there's one moment where I thought it was actually a really
- 20:00cool transition cuz the Jim, the motorcycle guy, the boyfriend,
- 20:05he is out in the woods and he lights a cigarette and the sound
- 20:09of the Zippo like happens right as we cut over to Julie, the
- 20:14girlfriend. And I was like, oh, that's
- 20:16really cool. That was a nice moment.
- 20:18Wish there were more of this. And then it flashes back to him
- 20:21and he's. Starting a new lighting the
- 20:23cigarette and I was like, well this just fucking ruined that
- 20:25for me. Yeah, yeah, that was one of the
- 20:28things that stood out to me too, was the sound.
- 20:31It was, and it was such a stark difference going from this to
- 20:37Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which also has a lot of, like,
- 20:40ambient sound. Yeah, but it's done so much more
- 20:46proficiently. Yeah.
- 20:48And I'm not, I really am not trying to hate on this movie or
- 20:51hate on Latch or anything because again, we've never made
- 20:54a movie. I'm just pointing out things
- 20:57that made it an uncomfortable watch.
- 20:59I, I felt for him in that, in some of the things he was
- 21:04talking about there, he was like, well, under the time
- 21:06crunch, in the circumstances, I'd finish one shot and then by
- 21:09the time I say cut, they're already moving everything over
- 21:11to the next shot. It's like, you know, I it sounds
- 21:15bad. It sounds like it was a rough
- 21:17time. Yeah.
- 21:18It sounds like it was rushed. You didn't really have a lot of
- 21:21control. You're the director.
- 21:22You should probably be able to, like, have some bit of control
- 21:24of like how things are going. But yeah, but he's, he was way
- 21:30too sour. Yeah, on everything.
- 21:32Like, I, I like Fred Owen. He's like, you just got to like
- 21:35have like a good spirit about this kind of thing, man.
- 21:37Just laugh at it. And honestly like directors
- 21:40having that kind of a feeling towards a movie can really ruin
- 21:43it. The director for a mutilator is
- 21:45getting a shit ton of hate right now because his second one came
- 21:47out and he has gone and copyright claimed every single
- 21:53YouTube video that has ever spoken about mutilator.
- 21:55What? Really.
- 21:56Yeah. When did that happen?
- 21:57Oh, it's been, I've been seeing it on the dead meats.
- 22:01I've read it 'cause he put out a mutilator kill account that
- 22:04copyright claimed. And everybody in the comments
- 22:06was like, oh, this person did too.
- 22:07This person did too. And that's such a shame because
- 22:10I remember us talking about it and being really excited that
- 22:12there is a sequel coming out and it just kind of like sours your
- 22:16taste on it when somebody use. Yeah, just a grump about.
- 22:20It that is weird. Especially cuz like, it's not
- 22:23like people are uploading the full movie to watch.
- 22:25It's like a fair use. It's a discussion, it's a
- 22:27critique. I know that James has said that
- 22:30usually drives traffic to the movies.
- 22:32For them, yeah, it makes people aware that something like that
- 22:35exists and then they wanna go see it for themselves.
- 22:37Yeah. So yeah, it's just it's and I
- 22:41can't imagine. I mean, we put ourselves out
- 22:45there, you know as well, but this is not like as big as
- 22:48scale. No, but we've gotten bad
- 22:50reviews. But we've gotten bad reviews,
- 22:53and all we can do is laugh it off because we're not going to
- 22:55be the podcast for every person. Yeah, much like the movies we
- 22:59discuss, we have our audience. Yeah.
- 23:02And I get how that goes. And I'm not going to try and get
- 23:04bitter about it. And we're not going to, like,
- 23:06snipe at each other over it unless we're just having a bad
- 23:08day in general because we're humans.
- 23:09But yeah, that's not the vibe we want to put out there.
- 23:12So that's just such a shame because this could be one of
- 23:16those like, cult classics that if everybody can get in on the
- 23:19joke, but that's not what's happening.
- 23:22And you can feel that. Yeah, on the screen, definitely.
- 23:25OK. Do you have any other bats?
- 23:26Sad. I think I did enough.
- 23:29OK, I've done enough here. Oh, I'm sorry, I have to now
- 23:34share mine. So I think like one of the
- 23:38things about this movie that just what kind of kills it for
- 23:41me is it feels slow. Like I feel like I'm watching a
- 23:45movie in slow motion. Every time.
- 23:47This is one of those movies that every time you pause it, I would
- 23:49be like, how much do we have for?
- 23:51That it's not even a long movie. I think it's like an hour 20.
- 23:53Yeah. And I just.
- 23:56There's just nothing that happens, Like nothing happens to
- 24:00really progress things. Jacko kind of rises after some
- 24:04teens get him disturbed, like, mess with his grave.
- 24:08And then he's just kind of wondering about.
- 24:10And it's all very loose and like, it's like he'll go in one
- 24:14place and then like the next scene he's in a completely
- 24:16different place. And then like the next scene,
- 24:18he's back in that one place again.
- 24:20It's like, just like, there's no consistency to any of it.
- 24:23Like we could have had a really fun mash between like
- 24:26Pumpkinhead, Night of the Demons, and Trick or Treat with
- 24:29the way they did different types of lore and getting the demon
- 24:32out and everything, but that's not what ended up coming out.
- 24:35Yeah, it just, I don't know, it felt kind of scatterbrained
- 24:39everything. And there's just like hardly any
- 24:43tension in this movie because like, I I don't, I just doesn't
- 24:50feel like it was thought out. I I just really don't know what
- 24:53they were trying to do. Like they had these like little
- 24:55tiny story things like the garage scare thing, but nothing
- 24:58really came of that. Yeah.
- 25:00And like. What, One incident of the garage
- 25:04getting a little bit messed up and instead of fixing it,
- 25:05they're like, well. Yeah, shut her down.
- 25:09Fuck charity. Paint spilled.
- 25:11Fuck, that's it. I'm ruined.
- 25:15I'll never, I will never find out.
- 25:19We recover from that. And that's why the old man
- 25:26swooped in at the end. He's like, and that's how I
- 25:28became your daddy. Just lost custody of a little
- 25:35kid. Oh no, man, we've already kind
- 25:38of talked about plenty about the bad stuff.
- 25:39So what? What about the ugly stuff?
- 25:45That I don't I I this is one of those that I feel like the
- 25:52behind the scenes is so ugly and it has just.
- 25:54That sheds mind. Yeah, yeah, the the.
- 25:57I did feel really bad for her, for the director at one point,
- 26:00though, because where he was like, oh, those were fake legs
- 26:02in the grave, because I can imagine covering my son in dirt.
- 26:04And I was like, I hope you wouldn't do that too.
- 26:06Any child, actually. I'm glad you don't want to bury
- 26:09your set of. Life this was post we haven't
- 26:11even talked like he stormed out at one point like fuck you, fuck
- 26:14you, you can do this commentary on your own and then he comes
- 26:16back and sister. Was like, he went for a bathroom
- 26:19break. We can't pause this.
- 26:21I was like, because you can't pause this.
- 26:23We know it wasn't a bathroom. He was like, yeah, it's like,
- 26:25it's a shame. I wish we can, you know, pause
- 26:27and clean this stuff up. But we do these in our office
- 26:29now and we kind of just say it is what it is at this point.
- 26:32We do commentary tracks in our living room and.
- 26:36We pause. There's never been an instinct,
- 26:39regardless of how much time. We could tell you outside first
- 26:41or she won't be like I need to go in.
- 26:43The Yeah. You can pause this shit.
- 26:47The conversation keeps going back to this bit here, But yeah,
- 26:51he was like, he came back and he's like, he was trying to,
- 26:55like, actually give some insight.
- 26:57He's like, yeah, like, I just don't like the idea of burying
- 26:59my son. I was going through things at
- 27:01the time, like what the fuck happened?
- 27:03Man I'm so sad like I have I have empathy for this man but
- 27:09also woof. He he takes a little bit too
- 27:13seriously, man. This is like, I don't know when
- 27:14they did the commentary for this, but like it was it was
- 27:18enough time for him to maybe like be like, OK, yeah,
- 27:20whatever. But this?
- 27:21Is also what I'm saying when I say the commentary drag is far
- 27:24more engaging than the actual movie.
- 27:26Oh yeah, for sure. OK, what's your ugly?
- 27:29So the hair in this era was fucking terrible.
- 27:36I don't think anybody had a good head of hair in this entire
- 27:40movie. Also the Watsons, the the
- 27:45Patriots, the Patriots, the patriotic couple were pretty,
- 27:50pretty ugly. the IT I was kind of with you there.
- 27:54Like it was nice knowing that this was kind of how it was in
- 27:58the 90s even like it's not like a new thing for this to be.
- 28:02How was rhetoric that's being thrown around such?
- 28:04A bummer to hear and I was like wow, it was 30 years later.
- 28:08But it makes me, yeah, but there was some.
- 28:12I don't understand why, but I was also like, Oh well, it's
- 28:15nice to know like at least like, this isn't some kind of new type
- 28:19of hatred. In fact, you all good news.
- 28:23These are, in fact precedented times, Yeah.
- 28:26But like the whole thing that the bit between them, apparently
- 28:29this that couple was based off of some neighbors that Steve
- 28:35Blackshaw here or whatever his name is grew up with in his
- 28:39neighborhood. But like, they're they're
- 28:42listening to this guy that is just spitting this like very
- 28:45hateful stuff about, you know, like hating your liberal
- 28:51neighbors and stuff. Yeah, it it's just basically
- 28:56like turning on Fox News, you know, And yeah, maybe actually
- 29:00more Infowars. I'd say it's more along the
- 29:03lines of that Fox. News has gone to multiple trials
- 29:07and said that they cannot be properly classified as news
- 29:12because they're like, we use such heavy rhetoric.
- 29:15Of course it's just entertainment and not news.
- 29:17So that's not even I'm trying to, we're not being libelous.
- 29:23That's their own claim from their legal department.
- 29:27OK, what is your absurd? Yeah, I guess there's like a
- 29:37couple of moments, but I guess one of them is Watson or
- 29:41Watkins, whatever his name is. When he's mad at his wife for
- 29:44leaving the porch light on because the trick or treaters
- 29:46come by, he tells them. Nobody gets handouts in this
- 29:49fucking household and he doesn't turn out the fucking light
- 29:54again. I think he just wanted to be
- 29:55able to harass children all night.
- 29:58He's secretly happy that she left the board going on.
- 30:00I bet you're right. Believe it or not, another
- 30:02argument spawned from that in the commentary.
- 30:06Because like, I thought it was a funny moment.
- 30:09Again, one of those things that when you find like one of these,
- 30:12if you find like a quote class like, you're like.
- 30:15I. Light on, but the director was
- 30:16like, I didn't have time to go back and reshoot that.
- 30:19Yeah, yeah, he's like. It's hard keeping track of these
- 30:23things. You know, like Fred Owen,
- 30:24right's like Jesus. Not that big of a dude.
- 30:26It's. Not that deep, man.
- 30:28I like that he kept picking though.
- 30:29He's like one of the later scenes that like the family's
- 30:32house is like, oh I see a garlic hanging on the wall back then
- 30:36and like the director's like observant, aren't you?
- 30:41Oh man, my absurd is the wizard mask guy at the beginning
- 30:46because we like anytime that they shoot dialogue of him like
- 30:50it's always like they have to shoot away from like you see in
- 30:52his face. So it's the back of his head and
- 30:53then the reaction shots or just like his face.
- 30:56I'm sorry. Wizard mask?
- 30:58Don't you mean Robert De Niro mask?
- 31:01Yeah, it doesn't have the Robert De Niro eyes to it.
- 31:04You're right. It's my God, man, it's so weird.
- 31:08They did. It's a cool looking mask but God
- 31:11like they you could tell the mouth wouldn't move.
- 31:14Yeah, it's oh man, this movie. Is irresponsible.
- 31:17Also, we have Linnea Quigley's character Carolyn and the dad,
- 31:22David. They have like a little
- 31:24flirtation thing going on. And there's like a moment there
- 31:28where something about like him being like a big kid at heart or
- 31:33whatever. She's like, oh, that's OK, I
- 31:35like kids. And she says that in a sexual
- 31:38way. So gross.
- 31:39Yeah, that's not the the sexy hit you.
- 31:42Are there to babysit their son? Yeah, yeah, that's that was just
- 31:47kind of like a you don't make a wiggly.
- 31:48Pass for that. Yeah, come on, That was just
- 31:51really strange if. Anything that's a misty Quiggly.
- 31:54Yeah. OK.
- 31:56So that's it for all that stuff. What do you rate this?
- 32:02I struggled with this and I really don't want to be mean but
- 32:06I I am not the right audience for this.
- 32:10OK, I'm gonna give it a 2. OK, yeah, I'm on the lower end
- 32:14myself. I'm giving it a 3.
- 32:16It's a 2 1/2 IMDb full one point lower.
- 32:22Wait, did I do that just. Call us IMDb.
- 32:24You said 2 1/2 IMDb. I did 2.
- 32:34And a half average. All right, we're IMDb now, I
- 32:38guess. OK, welcome to the IMDb podcast.
- 32:41Please just do not take us down. All right, let's do this.
- 32:48So I started off with a very uncomfortable fireside pumpkin
- 32:51carving and scary storytelling. Potentially with this man not
- 32:56being the father of little little child here will Kelly
- 33:00all. Right, like I, I needed, I
- 33:02needed to know more of why this guy has this child in the woods.
- 33:08He's a neighbor. We learned that much later.
- 33:11But why is he telling this story?
- 33:14Yeah, we, we don't really have any movie reasoning.
- 33:17I think the only reason they do this here is to set up old
- 33:20Mister Jack as a character. And they even come up with a
- 33:23little Jingle for him here. Let's see.
- 33:26How's it go? Mister Jack will break your
- 33:27back, cut off your head with a whack.
- 33:29Whack. It's it's not bad.
- 33:34That's a good old Jingle there. Yeah, I.
- 33:37Don't know. So it's a legend based on
- 33:39revenge, of course, because a long time ago there was a farm
- 33:42boy and possible ancestor of Shawn because his name is also
- 33:45Kelly. And I wrote he may have lost his
- 33:48dad, who helped hang a town killer, because we get a
- 33:52flashback scene to the young Kelly boy on the farm trying to
- 33:58tell his dad not to go. Yeah, I, I truly don't
- 34:02understand everything that's happening here.
- 34:04It's all so weird. And it's just, I don't, I don't
- 34:08know. There's not a lot of good
- 34:09reasoning. So let's just get this out of
- 34:13the way now instead of trying to untangle it throughout the movie
- 34:15because it never gets fully untangled.
- 34:17OK? There was a serial killer back
- 34:20in the day. It was like 5 generations ago
- 34:24and a town mob, mostly consistent of the Kelly family
- 34:31did mob justice and they lynched the the killer and he cursed
- 34:36them to all die within the year. But that curse didn't come true,
- 34:42and apparently there was an additional addendum to this
- 34:45curse, that the 5th generation son would be the one to defeat
- 34:53Mr. Pumpkin Man, who I guess is also Walter Mackin.
- 34:56Yeah, it's so like it's so specific, the 5th iteration of
- 35:02the Kelly. Yeah, and Vivian says it like
- 35:04it's obvious. Yeah.
- 35:06So that's what we're going with. That's what's happening
- 35:10throughout all of this movie, if it makes sense.
- 35:16No, yeah. And OK, so after all of that, we
- 35:21now see a little Sean, Sean Kelly.
- 35:24He wakes up at night, he peeks out his window and he sees Jacko
- 35:27creeping out there. He's getting visions of Jacko.
- 35:31So then the next day, he is walking home from school with
- 35:35Robbie and Sarah, I think are their names.
- 35:37Yeah. There.
- 35:39Robbie believes in the pumpkin Jack.
- 35:41And he also says there's a witch in the neighborhood and it's
- 35:45just a woman in a car, but whatever.
- 35:48Like kids got a kid. Yeah, but he's kind of right.
- 35:51Right. Like she's like the descendant
- 35:53of the wizard. So she's kind of a witch.
- 35:55Yeah. I don't know.
- 35:55She's she's here doing some mystical shit.
- 35:57Yeah, So he starts throwing rocks at her car, and Sean says,
- 36:02no, don't do that. And so then Rob's like, eat
- 36:05dirt. And then the witch, also Vivian,
- 36:07comes up and is like, hey, break it up, kids.
- 36:10And then she's like, Sean, do you want to get in my car?
- 36:12And he says, no, stranger danger.
- 36:14That was very big in the 90s. He's like, well, can I walk you
- 36:18home? He goes, I see no problem with
- 36:19that. So they get home and she tells
- 36:25his dad that they had a fight, but he was like defending her.
- 36:30And then she sees that he's thinking about Banner for a
- 36:33haunted house and which they call a spook house the entire
- 36:36time. I don't like that haunted house.
- 36:37It's an alliteration. It's a well known term.
- 36:40I'm going to say haunted house. I kind of like Spook House.
- 36:42I don't. Yeah, I don't.
- 36:45OK, yeah, she offers to help him out with it.
- 36:47Yeah. And he's like, yeah, awesome.
- 36:49Cool. And then Sean goes into his
- 36:51bedroom and he's got a Narnia closet.
- 36:55He has these bifold doors that just lead out into the woods.
- 36:59So he goes out there and he's just seeing the past.
- 37:05These are visions. I guess he passed in real time.
- 37:08This kids like laying face down on the floor.
- 37:10Yeah, Sean Kelly in real time is having an absent seizure.
- 37:15That is Bowman at the mouth. That is.
- 37:17Well, no, that's not how an absence, an absence seizure is
- 37:19an actual thing. Oh.
- 37:20OK, I'm sure. But yeah, so Vivian tells
- 37:26Shawn's parents that she is researching her great, great
- 37:28grandpa Mackie. And she said we actually have
- 37:32history, the Kelly's and the Mackie's Mackins.
- 37:36See, I wrote Mackie on my notes and we cut back to Shawn.
- 37:41He's outside of Kelly's farm. He sees Daniel and Jewel.
- 37:46The the young boy and the wife are just dead in the barn.
- 37:50And the father, that was like putting together his cross and
- 37:54going to go like fight whatever he is like, no.
- 38:00So he survived that night, I guess.
- 38:03I don't know. Vivian comes into Shawn's
- 38:05bedroom. Why are you wandering around
- 38:06this house, lady? Yeah, stressful to me as she
- 38:10brings Sean back out into the living room.
- 38:12And, like, Mom's like, Oh my God, are you OK?
- 38:14And she's like, Sean's OK. Sean's OK, aren't you?
- 38:16Aren't you, Sean? You're fine.
- 38:17You just had a moment. But it's OK.
- 38:20And like, I'm Team Linda in this moment who's like, you get the
- 38:24fuck out of my house. Yeah, I would like everybody's
- 38:27getting creepy vibes except for David and Sean, which is weird,
- 38:31but you know, yeah, she's she's kind of a creepy person.
- 38:34And Sean is a kid. OK, Yeah.
- 38:37That's all we need to know. OK, so let's see there.
- 38:45Are teens drinking on the side of the road?
- 38:46Yeah, they're, they're going looking for the Oakmoor
- 38:48Cemetery. They're just want to cause some
- 38:51mischief on Halloween nights or All Hallows Eve.
- 38:55Yeah, yeah, yeah. They know that it's where the
- 38:58old Kelly farm used to be, but one of the teams, one of the
- 39:01teens, says my opening quote, which is that there aren't any
- 39:03dead people in the suburbs. Yeah, which?
- 39:07Learn more about the suburbs kid.
- 39:08Plenty of dead people. Oh yeah, several.
- 39:11And one of them, Shannon, tosses one of the beers into the woods
- 39:16and. Gross.
- 39:16We'll do that. Well, the other guy, a teen
- 39:19desperate for beer, goes chasing after it and he drinks what
- 39:23little dribblets are left on the ground.
- 39:25OK, but how do you know that that's the same beer that was
- 39:27thrown and it wasn't from previous teens that checked
- 39:31their near empties into the woods?
- 39:33Just imagine like out there, there's just like a whole yard
- 39:36of like cans out there and just people licking.
- 39:38This is This is why teens get mono.
- 39:40I'm just like, it's like cats out there, like, you know,
- 39:43looking like the water on the ground.
- 39:45Dude, I somebody set up a camera under their glass table, under
- 39:50the glass of water and just caught like the time lapse of
- 39:54their cats coming over and like sniffing the water, licking it,
- 39:57tapping it with their paw. It was amazing.
- 39:59What? These people are doing sniffing,
- 40:02licking, tapping the beer cans, you know?
- 40:05That's my, that's my mom's mute. That's my mom's kitten.
- 40:07He doesn't see it. Yeah.
- 40:09He tries to seal her beer all the time.
- 40:10When she's drinking, she's like, stop it.
- 40:13That cat goes hard. So in doing so, they discover
- 40:17one of the tombstones there. It's for Arthur Kelly.
- 40:21Yeah, they OK, So we're cutting back and forth between different
- 40:27things. We find out that the haunted
- 40:29house at the Kelly House is the present day Kelly House.
- 40:32It's to raise money for a homeless shelter, which I think
- 40:34is actually kind of a cool thing.
- 40:36Yeah, that is nice, Yeah. We cut back to the teens in the
- 40:40woods. 2 of the teens I'm going to give credit because I know I
- 40:44hate teenagers and scaring me these a lot and I'm afraid of
- 40:47real life teenagers. But two of them are like hey
- 40:51it's probably not cool to disturb this grave.
- 40:53Please leave the cross in the ground to the third one.
- 40:56So for a moment, they're OK. Yeah, yeah, they're just like
- 41:00admiring the graves here and there is like a makeshift cross
- 41:03in one of them there. It's just made out of two things
- 41:05that stick and one of them removes the cross.
- 41:09Yep, and the the other one finds a scythe from the ground.
- 41:15Yeah, and that's just Jimmy's the riles of old Jacko there.
- 41:23I don't feel like that's how that's saying.
- 41:24Riles the jimmies. Russell, you don't rile jimmies,
- 41:28you Russell jimmies. We need to stop recording early
- 41:33in the morning. This is weird.
- 41:35It is. I don't know, man.
- 41:36This is movie. I don't know.
- 41:37It's all backwards. It's making me all backwards and
- 41:40jumbled. OK, we cut to Linda.
- 41:42I need to talk about this moment because the audacity.
- 41:45Linda calls Caroline to babysit and Carolyn's like, well, it's
- 41:49Halloween, I have a party I'm going to and Linda's like just
- 41:52great. Who else am I supposed to get to
- 41:53babysit the last second? Well, Linda, it sounds like you
- 41:57hadn't arranged this beforehand. Like Carolyn's not flaking on
- 42:00you. She just had plans because you
- 42:02waited until the day before to call her to babysit.
- 42:07Let's let's. And also they're not leaving
- 42:10their own property. Thank you, I was about to
- 42:13actually go into that. Let's dive even further into how
- 42:15weird this is. They're just in their spook
- 42:18garage at the house. Why do they need a babysitter?
- 42:21And they don't even need both of them to be there if the issue is
- 42:24the trick or treating like one person can handle taking dollar
- 42:28bills. I mean, yeah, it's just, it
- 42:32doesn't make any sense. This whole thing, yeah, this
- 42:35whole thing is nonsense. But but Carolyn's like, well, my
- 42:39sister Julie is visiting from college.
- 42:40She's super responsible as she's outside drinking on a
- 42:43motorcycle. So like, I will bring her with
- 42:45me and she can take over when I go to the party.
- 42:47And Linda, who has no problem having strange women watch over
- 42:50her son, says sounds like a good deal.
- 42:54I also need to point out, because here's the thing, La Boo
- 42:57boos, it's not a novel concept, right?
- 43:00Like having a different doll face put onto a stuffed animal.
- 43:03We've seen boost of that over the years at Scarefest.
- 43:07And I just need to point out that in 1995, Sean Kelly has a
- 43:11fucking La Boo Boo. Not not a la Boo Boo brand La
- 43:14Boo Boo, but like the ancest, the spiritual ancestor to him.
- 43:18What is the Lou Boo Boo? Oh, you are not familiar with
- 43:20the Lou Boo Boo. I don't think so.
- 43:24Oh, you know, loo Boo Boo. Yeah.
- 43:29OK, Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:30So like we've we've seen those various places.
- 43:33Loo Boo Boo is just the brand that has become well known, and
- 43:37now it's kind of from me getting like the zip bot, Kleenex,
- 43:40whatever treatment where you use the brand name, even if it
- 43:42doesn't actually apply to the, yeah, actual thing you're
- 43:44talking about. That makes sense.
- 43:45Yeah. So Sean has a fucking Boo Boo so
- 43:48you guys know. Good for you Sean.
- 43:49You need something here cuz clearly it's just a pretty bad
- 43:52home life there. OK?
- 43:54Vivian finds the truck of the teens out in the woods.
- 43:58She's just kind of wandering around I guess.
- 44:00Doing research on Oakmoor here. Yeah, and the teens have decided
- 44:03that they're not gonna continue to be good teens because they do
- 44:05end up disturbing the graves. Sean is having Jacko nightmares
- 44:13and is seeing this happening as Viviana's witnessing it in
- 44:16person. So Jack go kills Brent and Paul
- 44:19and chases Shannon, who is like running.
- 44:22But then she does the horror movie thing where like she's
- 44:25cornered, but she's not really cornered because it's just a
- 44:27fucking tree and you move around the tree but she doesn't, so she
- 44:30gets killed too. Yeah, Carolina and Julie get to
- 44:33the Kelly house, but apparently it's really early, so I don't.
- 44:39They're doing a run through, which I don't even know why you
- 44:41need to do a run through. Babysitting, dress rehearsal, I
- 44:44don't know, but Jim has driven them both there on his
- 44:46motorcycle and then Sean asked his dad can I go see the
- 44:49motorcycle? And Jim says yes, but don't
- 44:51touch it. First off.
- 44:52David says yes, but don't touch it.
- 44:54Yeah, I want to know how that works with three people on a
- 44:57motorcycle. That's not it's not legal.
- 45:00That's not how that works. There's not enough room.
- 45:03Like I know Ania Quigley is a tiny person, but like, even for
- 45:06her as the third, that's too much.
- 45:08Yeah, yeah. And then Jim, who has never met
- 45:13this child before and apparently lives in a state where helmets
- 45:16are optional, just takes this small child on his motorcycle
- 45:19without a fucking helmet. They don't fucking care, this
- 45:23kid. No stranger danger for Jim here.
- 45:27I like how the director was like, listen, I'm not I'm gonna
- 45:30bury my son in dirt, but I will let him be his own stunt person
- 45:34without any protective. You're right.
- 45:36Yeah, man, he didn't. He didn't care.
- 45:39That kid. Poor kid.
- 45:41Vivian shows Jim her family Bible, which includes a photo of
- 45:47Walter Mackin at the front, and she says that he was accused of
- 45:51sorcery back in the day and he was hanged 81 years ago today
- 45:56and he cursed all Kelly's to die within one year's time.
- 46:00But Arthur Kelly ended up surviving.
- 46:03So that has made it so that way Walter is still a spirit.
- 46:13Yeah. Is that?
- 46:15Is that how we're interpreting? All of this, to sum it all up,
- 46:18we got a pumpkin man out here now that's really old.
- 46:21We got a pumpkin, man. So now it's night time, we got
- 46:26kids trick or treating. It's the two kids from earlier
- 46:28that were not friends, friends with Sean that fought him, you
- 46:32know, whatever. And Sarah doesn't want to go to
- 46:34the Watsons. Yeah, because they got a bad
- 46:38reputation for being mean people.
- 46:40And Robbie says he owns a grocery store.
- 46:42Surely he will have good candy. And they go up there and he says
- 46:47no handouts. I work for everything I have,
- 46:49which honestly that's part of the reason that I'm pro kids
- 46:52walking around cuz they're earning their candy.
- 46:54They are, yeah. And I.
- 46:56Don't mean that in a shitty way. I'm still gonna give kids candy
- 46:58if they drive, but yeah. Well, don't drive kids, let your
- 47:01parents. Drive.
- 47:01Yeah, also that. So they decide that when he does
- 47:06not give them candy, they're going to TP his house.
- 47:09And by TP his house, I mean throw mostly full rolls of TP
- 47:13onto the roof. That was one of my favorite
- 47:15parts of the commentary there. It's like, you know, like they
- 47:18wasted a whole roll of toilet paper on the the house here.
- 47:21The church was like, they didn't waste.
- 47:24He's just like, just like the exacerbated and like sigh like.
- 47:28But I mean, I wrote in my notes the kids are very bad at TP ING.
- 47:31They are, yeah. They're terrible.
- 47:32I also liked his idea, like, you know, if they do like
- 47:34screenings, this movie, like, you know, like Rocky Horror,
- 47:36just like toss the toilet paper, you know, like that would be a
- 47:38fun thing and. That's what I'm saying, this
- 47:41movie could have like an endearing cult following if the
- 47:44director would just lean into it.
- 47:45Yeah, I mean, the community too, like, you know, make it happen.
- 47:50So yeah. We learned about the Kelly's
- 47:51door sticking. As Stephen Latchell said, yes,
- 47:55that's what writers call foreshadowing.
- 47:59Man, God, it was just like and. That time the producer wasn't
- 48:04even being a shit. He was like, when I was buying
- 48:07my house, I found a house where the door stuck and I told the
- 48:10realtor, hey, this is a setup for a horror movie.
- 48:14And the director's like actually.
- 48:16Because he like, apparently it was like the trademark Olin Ray
- 48:20sarcasm right here. I guess he thought like anytime
- 48:23that he would make a comment, he just like, interpreted it as
- 48:26sarcasm for whatever reason. But that right there I felt also
- 48:29was legitimate. He was just trying to make that
- 48:31conversation. We made jokes like that when we
- 48:34were looking for our house because there was one where the
- 48:36back door, like it's the old school.
- 48:37You have to lock it from the inside to open it.
- 48:41Yeah, with a key and everything. And we're like, shit, if we're
- 48:43ever serial murdered like we're going to, how are we going to
- 48:47get out? Yeah, it's it's a common thing
- 48:49to to joke about. It's it's foreshadowing, it's a
- 48:52trope. We're with you on this, Steven.
- 48:55It's OK. You can be.
- 48:57You can be OK with this. Poor guy.
- 49:02OK, Carolyn and Julie arrive for real this time and they're
- 49:05supposed to take Sean Trick or treating.
- 49:07We go back to the Watsons and he hears more sounds outside, so he
- 49:11goes out to yell at the teens that have taken off his hubcap
- 49:15and thrown it. They didn't at least steal it,
- 49:16they just took it off. He's mildly inconvenienced.
- 49:19Gentle prank, as our friends at Pod Litum would say.
- 49:22That's a pretty. I don't like that one though.
- 49:24That one. Like yeah, but still, fuck that.
- 49:28I mean, yeah, I'm not. I'm saying that it's like, OK,
- 49:31I'm just saying in the long run I would rather deal with having
- 49:35to put my hubcap on than cleaning up toilet paper in my
- 49:37yard. I guess.
- 49:38Yeah, yeah, one's a little bit easier to handle.
- 49:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:43So Richard goes out to stop and he gets gutted by old Jack.
- 49:47Yep, and his wife finds him outside.
- 49:50She runs in. They were eating toast on
- 49:53Halloween night on their TV dinner trays.
- 49:56I will actually, I'm going to give the movie good credit for
- 49:58this one right here because he actually did the the classic
- 50:02Riders trick. Foreshadowing here because we
- 50:04see her, Amanda is her name. She slips on the rug for a
- 50:07moment there and then she's like, ah, OK, whatever.
- 50:10And she's trying to get the toaster going and it like kind
- 50:13of shocks her and she's like, ah, we got to get that thing
- 50:15fixed. And then when she sees that her
- 50:17husband's dead, she runs inside to grab a knife, slips on the
- 50:21rug again, grabbing the knife, and accidentally Jimmy in the
- 50:24toaster, electrocuting her to death, saying.
- 50:26The Watson's house is probably the most fun they had as a set
- 50:29piece. Yeah, and I wish more of the
- 50:31movie had this energy. Yeah.
- 50:33I will say though the the lightning bolts that they used
- 50:38is. They were once again borrowed
- 50:39from shopping mall. Surprisingly worse than shopping
- 50:43mall it was but that's the thing like I I like it when movies
- 50:46like lean into the cheesiness or something like that.
- 50:49Although God I, I wish we got a Symphony of like them commenting
- 50:53on that because I I know he had something to say about that.
- 50:57Absolutely. Julie goes to the bathroom and
- 51:01basically has ditched Carolyn and Sean, but she didn't even
- 51:04know on the outside of the front door this is beer run.
- 51:11You know, like, yeah, I, I don't buy it.
- 51:14They're going out into the woods to fuck.
- 51:16That's exactly what they're doing.
- 51:17But she hears a sound and she's like, something's happening and
- 51:23I don't feel good about this and Jim nice guy moment.
- 51:27And it was like, well, fine, you can walk and drives off just
- 51:30because he couldn't fuck while she was hearing something in the
- 51:34woods. Yeah, gross.
- 51:37Robbie and Carolyn go outside to go trick or treating.
- 51:43They're the only trick or treaters besides Robbie and
- 51:47Sarah. And apparently the Watsons are
- 51:49the only house in town. Sorry, I got my names all mixed
- 51:53up. OK, we see Robbie get grabbed by
- 51:57Jacko in the haunted house. Yeah, they're, they went to the
- 52:00Spook Garage and it's open. They go in there and yeah,
- 52:03Jacko's in there. And he's like reaching through
- 52:06'cause you know, they've got the whole like, touch the bowl of
- 52:08peeled grapes. It's eyeballs.
- 52:10And like, while he's in there, he's like trying to peek into it
- 52:13because he's a kid and that's what kids do.
- 52:14And he sees Jacko and Jacko like grabs his arm for a minute.
- 52:17So Robbie and Sarah go running and they're screaming and
- 52:20they're just like, awesome. This sounds like a really cool
- 52:22haunted house. It's it's like in Scream Queens
- 52:25the first season when they have the haunted house, so there's
- 52:27actual dead bodies and they're trying to tell the police and
- 52:29he's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 52:31That sounds like a really awesome haunted house.
- 52:33Yeah, it's funny. Like they run out screaming and
- 52:37they're like, our house isn't that scary?
- 52:39Like, yeah, you didn't do that good of a job, David.
- 52:42Is like, hey, I'm pretty proud of myself.
- 52:44And one just like, no, you go check it out.
- 52:46They definitely saw something else.
- 52:47Poopy doopy Doo. Whoops.
- 52:51Nobody's going to have any contacts with that.
- 52:54We have a running alarm on Sundays at a certain time called
- 52:59Poopy Doopy Doo, and that means we must put tell you at that
- 53:01time. Yeah, unfortunately I.
- 53:02Just like to set random alarms for Travis.
- 53:09Back on script. OK, sorry.
- 53:11Was there even a script here? I know we're that's long gone at
- 53:14this point. Yeah, so David and Linda go and
- 53:17look and. He accidentally knocks over that
- 53:21one of the shelves and paint spills and he's like, oh fuck.
- 53:25You know, like we said before, he's ruined reputation.
- 53:28Yeah, tarnished. He'll never spook in this town
- 53:30again. Never so embarrassing.
- 53:33Yeah, so they, they shut it down, David.
- 53:37Then we we see Jack is now inside their house.
- 53:41He's wandering around. He goes inside Sean's room.
- 53:44Yeah. And he's tearing up his bed and
- 53:46smashes his picture and yeah, he's just not happy with that
- 53:50kid. Does not like that kid.
- 53:52So inside David gets a call that Sarah and Robbie saw bodies in a
- 53:56monster and he's like bodies in a monster.
- 53:59I mean, my haunted house is pretty good.
- 54:02And the neighbors like, no, like, but actually, but for
- 54:04real. And he's like, I guess we should
- 54:06go find Sean. And he tells Vivian, hey, when
- 54:10my wife comes in, I tell her I've gone to look for Sean and
- 54:14Vivian's like, Yep, absolutely. And instead what happens is
- 54:16Linda comes in and sees Vivian. There is like, get out, get out.
- 54:21Get out, you don't live here. Why are you still here?
- 54:27It's like, like you said, they just forgot what to do with her,
- 54:30like stay in the house. I don't know, like, what do we
- 54:33do with Vivian? She's just kind of like, she
- 54:35offered the help, but she's just kind of awkward to be standing
- 54:37around at the Spookhaus. She's not doing anything.
- 54:41It's weird. So Jim and Julie back to them in
- 54:44the woods cuz. He goes back to get Joy.
- 54:48Yeah. And as that happens, old Jack
- 54:51decides he's going to pop out and he decapitates Jim.
- 54:54Head rolls. And he chases Julie who runs out
- 54:57cuz there's a lineman working on Halloween, which sucks for him
- 55:01but rules for the people who had lost their power.
- 55:04Yeah, and she jumps into the truck for safety, and Jacko
- 55:09attacks the lineman. Linda finds Shawn's room
- 55:13completely wrecked. Meanwhile, Carolyn and Shawn run
- 55:18into Jacko in the park because they're taking a shortcut back
- 55:20to the house. And Carolyn, Carolyn distracts
- 55:24herself. She sacrifices herself for
- 55:26Shawn. She gets good babysitter points
- 55:28here. She does, yeah, but and she only
- 55:30gets knocked out. She doesn't get killed.
- 55:32She just like yeah, hits her with the stick of the scythe and
- 55:35boom. It's because she's being a good
- 55:37babysitter and nobody else saw her boobs, just us.
- 55:41Like it wasn't a public boob showing so she still has the
- 55:43purity factor. That's right.
- 55:45You know what? Good job, Linnea.
- 55:47I I feel like I feel like Randy Meeks would approve of this
- 55:50interpretation. I think, yeah, I think it gets
- 55:52the Meeks seal of approval here. Sure, runs.
- 55:55You know what? What?
- 55:57Also, by that reckoning, Linnea Quigley is legit.
- 56:02She is you're. Right.
- 56:03She is legit, Yeah. I mean, I always say that
- 56:05anyway, but. Yeah, I love.
- 56:08That's what you always say I love honey.
- 56:09Quickly, I do too. Who doesn't?
- 56:12Dummies. You know she's gonna be a scary
- 56:14fest this year, but maybe we'll ask her about Jacko.
- 56:17Yeah. I'd be like, guy, that's the one
- 56:20movie I don't wanna talk about. Yeah.
- 56:23So Sean, he runs inside the Walter's house.
- 56:26I guess you know that's the only place.
- 56:29Walter is the wizard ghost De Niro.
- 56:32Yeah, yeah, you're right, man. Watson's house.
- 56:34See. OK.
- 56:34Yeah. Runs in there, hides for a
- 56:37second. Jacko goes in there, sees them.
- 56:39They just run out. It's kind of a pointless little
- 56:41diversion. Scooby-doo kind of chase scene.
- 56:44Yeah, Vivian, she comes clean to the parents about what's going
- 56:50on here. She's like I'm using Sean as
- 56:52bait. Yeah, like he's a decoy out
- 56:53there to flash to flush out the pumpkin man so we can destroy
- 56:59him, but also he has to destroy because he is the fifth born
- 57:03male male descendant. Yeah.
- 57:05Yeah. And then Sean runs home.
- 57:09The door sticks. I.
- 57:12OK, here's the thing. I understand not getting
- 57:14something fixed right away, it's just sometimes it's hard to with
- 57:18life going on. There's always shit that needs
- 57:20to be fixed. As a homeowner, you cannot tell
- 57:23me that they haven't just adapted to going through a
- 57:26different door in their house. It's Shawn's back door area.
- 57:29Like it's like double door. Cuz like we had a tree fall on
- 57:33our house when I was a kid and it like bent the frame for our
- 57:35front door. So we just went through the side
- 57:38until we could get it fixed. And that just became the way we
- 57:42all went in forever after, which was just through the side door.
- 57:46And I refuse to believe that a house that has a garage doesn't
- 57:49also have multiple points of egress.
- 57:51So there's no way that his instinct is going to be go to
- 57:56that front door because that door has been sticking long
- 57:58enough that they're all like, Oh yeah, no, we go through the side
- 57:59door or we go through the back door.
- 58:01My family most of the time went through the window.
- 58:06I can't tell if you're being serious or if you're fucking
- 58:08with me. I'm dead serious.
- 58:10Which one though? The window.
- 58:13Which? One, we only had one window,
- 58:14Jesse, you know this. God, don't make me tell
- 58:17everybody about the one window we had.
- 58:20You Your house has three doors. Your family's house has three
- 58:23doors. And yeah, we chose the window.
- 58:26Which window? I don't know.
- 58:29We do have a big sliding door at the side of the house.
- 58:31Whatever. OK, back on track here.
- 58:37Sean has chased back to his house.
- 58:39We saw earlier when he was trick or treating, he got juice, red
- 58:43juice. Yeah.
- 58:44And so the parents are trying to get the door open to let Sean
- 58:48in, and the window is flattered with red.
- 58:51And it's not blood, although that is meant to be the
- 58:53implication. And I wish the movie had gone
- 58:55that hard, because I didn't expect that kind of teeth.
- 58:58From this like damn the only the 5th male descent killed.
- 59:02How many movies do that as a? Child in a movie like like this?
- 59:07I know none, but no, it's just juice.
- 59:10Just juice, yeah. Give pick out the juices.
- 59:13Yeah. And we see like Jack, he's not
- 59:16killing the kid. He has to like, he's just like,
- 59:18kind of like pushing him. Yeah.
- 59:20Towards the grave. He's just leading them there.
- 59:22It's like Talia when she wants to go to bed and she wants us
- 59:24all to go to bed with her and she's like.
- 59:26Come with me. Yeah, yeah, this way.
- 59:28And Vivian's like, I know where they're going.
- 59:30So they all get in the car together and they arrive at the
- 59:34woods and they see Jim in his dead body.
- 59:38They also see Jacko covering Shawn up with dirt using the
- 59:42side. There's a shovel, which looked
- 59:44very much like us without a shovel last year, trying to
- 59:47clear the snow in our driveway with our car windshield
- 59:51scrapers. That's kind of what he's doing.
- 59:52He's just like scooching in the dirt and it goes from like a
- 59:55couple of handfuls of dirt on him to a full grave.
- 59:58He's completely, like, covered in dirt.
- 1:00:01Yeah and yeah. God, this is just poorly thrown
- 1:00:08together here at the end, so. Yeah, Vivian gets stabbed by
- 1:00:13Jack Row. I was surprised that she would
- 1:00:14die, honestly. I I didn't expect her to die.
- 1:00:17Sean comes out of the grave. He has made a cross and.
- 1:00:23Yeah, the, the family made the cross.
- 1:00:25Yeah, they brought it back because that's one of the things
- 1:00:27that they had to do. They have to put the cross back
- 1:00:29in the ground. I don't know why that's not
- 1:00:32really established, but they they make the cross.
- 1:00:36It's over there next to the grave next to Sean, who grabs
- 1:00:40it, pulls it up. He's like, don't get my mommy
- 1:00:43and daddy or whatever. Don't kill my mom and dad.
- 1:00:47Yeah, they argued over that line in the commentary as well.
- 1:00:50But I remember that was one of the things that stuck out to us.
- 1:00:53Remember when he's getting buried and he's like, no, no,
- 1:00:57no. We're putting more emotion into
- 1:01:01that than that kid did. The director, he was like, he
- 1:01:04did the best he could. Like he was so defensive over
- 1:01:07his kid. I'm glad he's defensive over his
- 1:01:09kid but also he was like that kid has guns now so I don't know
- 1:01:12how he feels about his child. He said he's like, he's like,
- 1:01:16yeah, I'm looking for ways to bury my kid now.
- 1:01:17Like again, this is post SIM storming out so it was weird
- 1:01:22mood. It's weird.
- 1:01:23It's. Weird vibes.
- 1:01:25Anyway, the pumpkin Man has killed Shawn.
- 1:01:29Shoved onto the the cross, yeah, so.
- 1:01:32Shawn lays the size on Arthur Kelly's grave and then they all
- 1:01:35walk home in the daylight. Julie comes from out of hiding
- 1:01:38and finds Carolyn, and Carolyn and Julie join the Kelly's.
- 1:01:42Yep. That's it.
- 1:01:43That's how the movie ends. All of that for that.
- 1:01:46Yeah, it's kind of a whatever type of ending there, man.
- 1:01:51I had a hard time even talking about.
- 1:01:56This. Yeah.
- 1:01:56It's more fun talking about the commentary than it is about the
- 1:01:58movie itself. Yeah, I mean, I'm.
- 1:02:01I'm keeping. It yeah, I'm gonna keep mine too
- 1:02:03a lot of times like if we talk about something and we can joke
- 1:02:06around and have fun about it like it'll improve my mood about
- 1:02:10a movie but. Yeah, same.
- 1:02:12I don't know. This is just a it's a tough
- 1:02:14watch. For real.
- 1:02:17Yeah. I mean, you know, but we've
- 1:02:19already said what we would change just like, I don't know,
- 1:02:21give it stakes, give it something I don't know.
- 1:02:24Cut out some of the storylines. There's just too much happening.
- 1:02:27Yeah, it didn't need to be this complicated.
- 1:02:31What is a dream sequel for this? Man.
- 1:02:37Sean Kelly, I want it to be played by the same kid.
- 1:02:42OK, well, he's got guns now. So yeah, he's got guns.
- 1:02:44He's got a family of his own now, and he is a paranormal
- 1:02:50investigator. And he goes around to different
- 1:02:52towns looking up their like, town legends and figuring out
- 1:02:57which ones are real and which ones are fake.
- 1:02:59And then he just like, ends all of the paranormal cruises.
- 1:03:03All right, OK. We get like different types of
- 1:03:06like we dealt with the pumpkin man, now he's got to deal with
- 1:03:09the corn lady. Steven Lashaw hit us up.
- 1:03:12We can write at least an equivalent script to what Jacko
- 1:03:16was. With twice the budget.
- 1:03:19Twice the budget. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:03:21A pocket full of Dimes and a big lint fuzz.
- 1:03:25Yeah, and you get 2 takes this time.
- 1:03:27You don't have to do everything in one ticket.
- 1:03:30All right, OK. Do you relate to?
- 1:03:34I I think I related to the teens drinking beer from the ground
- 1:03:46cuz. Why would you admit that
- 1:03:48publicly? I need something to get me
- 1:03:54through this year. If I have to drink it from the
- 1:03:58the ground, the dirt, if I got to get some, if that's how I got
- 1:04:01to get my alcohol to get me through this fucking thing, then
- 1:04:04so be it. I saw somebody who this is
- 1:04:08describing like sobriety so that she was just raw dog in life and
- 1:04:12I was like damn. Raw dog in life.
- 1:04:16I cannot. Raw dog in this movie, man.
- 1:04:19Dude, I Yeah, I need protection. I guess I probably related to, I
- 1:04:27don't know. I guess I related to Jim because
- 1:04:34I have my motorcycle license. I would wear a helmet though,
- 1:04:37and I would not take a small child on my motorcycle.
- 1:04:40OK, well, you're better than him at least.
- 1:04:42Yeah, I think. Truly though, I related to Fred
- 1:04:44Olin Ray the most from this year.
- 1:04:47I just liked his attitude about everything here.
- 1:04:49I know I actually like. It endeared me to him a little
- 1:04:52bit. It's like you've made some shit,
- 1:04:54man. This is the same guy, by the
- 1:04:55way, that did the evil tunes. Yeah.
- 1:04:58Yeah, you make some shit, but at least you're aware.
- 1:05:00You're self aware, you know? Yeah.
- 1:05:04And he loves the carradines and. He loves the Carradines, that's
- 1:05:07true. He put them through.
- 1:05:10What was Scout's favorite part, you say?
- 1:05:11Yeah, that's exactly what I was about.
- 1:05:14To say well I think Scout's favorite part was when the kids
- 1:05:19juice got squished because she likes to see that kids one thing
- 1:05:23be torn apart in front of him. Obviously, Scout's favorite part
- 1:05:27was when the kid burst out from the grave, because Scout likes
- 1:05:30to burst out from things. Oh.
- 1:05:32So true. All right.
- 1:05:37OK, Did you get reviews? I did not, but I will pull them
- 1:05:42up right now. God damn it.
- 1:05:43All right, no, this is going to be great.
- 1:05:45We're going to rapid fire one right here.
- 1:05:47All right, 10 out of 10. Somebody that loves this one
- 1:05:50right here. Rent this one for a good time.
- 1:05:54Story involves ancient demon being released upon a small town
- 1:05:57on Halloween night. And all my life I've never seen
- 1:05:59such a cheesy film, but it is so damn entertaining.
- 1:06:02You can forgive it's bad acting, effects, direction and script.
- 1:06:08This is the best movie created for the Halloween season since
- 1:06:10the original Halloween. And when they introduce Lynea
- 1:06:14Quigley's character for the first time she is butt naked in
- 1:06:18the shower for like 5 minutes. Goodness, they just don't get
- 1:06:22any better than this. Rush and buy this tape right
- 1:06:25away. 5 out of 10. You gave it a 10 out of 10, but
- 1:06:29then you gave it a 5 out of 10. Like by the end, they're like,
- 1:06:32my conscience cannot let me give this A10 out 10.
- 1:06:35Was this review written by Olan Ray?
- 1:06:38Well, the name is Big P1, so maybe all right.
- 1:06:46Now, as always, we also get the bad reviews.
- 1:06:48And the bad reviews definitely outweigh the good reviews in
- 1:06:51this one. So rapid fire this one right
- 1:06:56here. I had known Brad Linda Weaver at
- 1:06:59Florida State University in the early 70s.
- 1:07:02Whoa, this is an intimate one right here when he was
- 1:07:04inspiring, inventive rider who I thought was headed for a
- 1:07:07creator. And that is why I rented this
- 1:07:12video. Well, well, well, the time has
- 1:07:15not been kind to Mr. Linda Weaver.
- 1:07:18I suppose the pressures of making a living makes higher
- 1:07:21aspirations expendable. Another flower whose bloom is
- 1:07:25come and gone unnoticed in the summer breeze.
- 1:07:28Amen. There is nothing more to say and
- 1:07:31nothing more to add. A sad epitaph to a once
- 1:07:34blossoming career as stated above.
- 1:07:36But it is the price one pays for chasing shadows without a firm
- 1:07:40foundation or goal was for oneself in life.
- 1:07:42Because this movie has no goal, no purpose.
- 1:07:45And I kept telling myself, what happened to Brad's creativity?
- 1:07:48His once shining genius gone gone.
- 1:07:51Years of neglect has deteriorated his once shining
- 1:07:54mind. That was personal.
- 1:07:57Dude I did not expect this entire movie to be personal
- 1:08:00takedowns of this like the fucking creatives behind the
- 1:08:02movie, but damn. That's what happens.
- 1:08:05I, I can't believe it. I, I just like shows that one at
- 1:08:08random and there was like somebody who actually went to
- 1:08:10school with the fucking writer. That's crazy.
- 1:08:13Oh man. OK, time for for the titular
- 1:08:17question. To be or Nazi?
- 1:08:18To be or Nazi Listen, the only way I would watch this again is
- 1:08:23if we were with a group of friends who had never seen it
- 1:08:25and we were like. With the commentary.
- 1:08:27With the commentary and we were like maybe drinking along.
- 1:08:32I think that that would be a great time.
- 1:08:34Yeah. Actually, look, I'm probably
- 1:08:39never gonna watch this again as a stand alone film.
- 1:08:41No, I would watch the commentary.
- 1:08:43Should you watch it? I would say try it.
- 1:08:47Yeah, give it a shot. There are obviously people that
- 1:08:50do like this and do have fun with it.
- 1:08:53It's become like a cult classic in a way.
- 1:08:57It's one of those movies that 'cause we talked about it, like
- 1:09:00sometimes when you're taking notes, you see that there's a
- 1:09:03lot of purpose to running back and forth in the movie and it
- 1:09:05feels more nuanced. And sometimes it's just actually
- 1:09:08just a bunch of running back and forth.
- 1:09:09And this is one of those movies that does not do well under the
- 1:09:12scrutiny of note taking. No, it does not.
- 1:09:15Yeah, this might be a good just kind of sit and just kind of
- 1:09:19take it as it comes. Yeah, type of movie right here.
- 1:09:23It's just like life. Yeah, this is going to be a not
- 1:09:28though for me, just to be like true to it.
- 1:09:31I'm just going to say Nah. But for you baby, at least give
- 1:09:36it a shot. I don't know if you like bad
- 1:09:38movies. I always think everybody should
- 1:09:39give a movie a shot. I just don't know.
- 1:09:42Same how much I'm willing to join people with giving it a
- 1:09:46shot again. It would have to be the right
- 1:09:47circumstances. Yeah.
- 1:09:49All right. Well, that's it then.
- 1:09:52That'll do it for this to be or not to be.
- 1:09:54Join us on Thursday for Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which is
- 1:09:58a first watch for both of us, and we're about to go record it
