- 0:00Welcome to the Doctor-Turned Health Coach Podcast. My name is Dr. Ashuri.
- 0:05I'm a family medicine physician turned health coach.
- 0:09And in today's episode, I want to focus on relationships, emotional well-being.
- 0:15These first few episodes are meant to be evergreen content, content that I can
- 0:20refer my own clients and patients back to.
- 0:23But it's also it should serve as a way for you to
- 0:26gauge how i think about all of these different health-related
- 0:29topics and perhaps if i'm the right person for you to work with my information
- 0:34is in the show description and you can book a session with me i would love to
- 0:38help you on your health journey so my trend method t-r-e-n-d r stands for relationships and it's really.
- 0:48About mental health and emotional well-being.
- 0:52It's about the connection that we have with ourselves, with loved ones,
- 0:56with the environment, everything around us.
- 0:59The reason it's so important is because human beings are social creatures.
- 1:04We tend to thrive when we're around others and we feel supported,
- 1:10we feel loved, we feel accepted.
- 1:13Not that there isn't growth from some negative feelings.
- 1:17In fact, that is part of a relationship, is sometimes having a bad experience,
- 1:22having to sit there, journal, think, reflect, and develop some growth because of that.
- 1:30That itself can be incredibly effective, and I think we can take that for granted way too easily.
- 1:36A few days of suffering from grief or any kind of loss can be a wonderful way
- 1:41for us to become more resilient in life.
- 1:46Relationships require us to
- 1:49reflect a lot about how we react to
- 1:52other people how what kind of dialogue we have inside our brain a lot of negative
- 1:58dialogue can really really just deplete you from positive energy and you're
- 2:06left with a lot of negativity that you have a hard time balancing.
- 2:11Some of the toughest relationships we have is with our romantic partners,
- 2:15with our parents, with our siblings, and those are good places to start.
- 2:20Kind of healing them, a lot of forgiveness, a lot of acceptance,
- 2:24not having to ever suffer because of somebody else.
- 2:28You can always have a firm no and set healthy boundaries, but being able to
- 2:33develop that balance with another human being is really beautiful.
- 2:37And I've seen in my own practice, my patients go through amazing transformations
- 2:42when they've forgiven, when they've accepted, when they've set those healthy
- 2:47boundaries. So I always encourage that with my clients.
- 2:52One of the most important aspects of this relationship is the relationship we have with ourselves.
- 3:00For example, if somebody has a lot of negative commentary in their head,
- 3:05they're constantly criticizing themselves or constantly saying negative things about themselves,
- 3:09then over time they're not only going to do that to their loved ones,
- 3:12to their kids, to other people, to employees, but they're also going to suffer
- 3:18the consequences of these negative stories.
- 3:22Turning that around and saying, hey, yeah, this kind of didn't go the way I
- 3:26want it to. I probably would do it this way, that way.
- 3:29It's a much more positive way of approaching it as opposed to,
- 3:34you're an idiot. What were you thinking? You shouldn't have done that.
- 3:37That's really negative. That's really caustic.
- 3:42So relationships with ourselves, with our loved ones, with our environment.
- 3:48However you view your environment. For me, looking at a beautiful bush,
- 3:52a tree, some grass, some green, some earth, some rocks, some plants,
- 3:57some birds, all of that is my environment, is everything around me.
- 4:00But my environment is also sometimes chaotic with tons of cars,
- 4:05tons of smog, tons of pollution.
- 4:07I travel a lot. I'm a bit of a digital nomad because my medical practice is
- 4:12online. So me and my wife tend to be all over the place in the world.
- 4:16And of course, sometimes you don't get to control the environment.
- 4:20It can be chaotic and crazy, but developing a beautiful relationship with that,
- 4:25not having a negative commentary about it constantly.
- 4:28Oh, it's so noisy. It's so loud. It's so chaotic.
- 4:32And instead, maybe just coming into that meditative state of relaxation and
- 4:38saying, yes, this is what's going on around me, but it is what it is.
- 4:42I have no control over it.
- 4:43Relinquishing that control, that's the relationship with our environment.
- 4:47And it can be a source of growth. For a lot of my clients, it's been an incredible source of growth.
- 4:53Some of us never get there until we experience a major setback in life,
- 4:59sometimes career-wise, sometimes financial.
- 5:01Then we learn that we have no choice but to give in, and then we learn to give
- 5:05in, and that can be a source of growth.
- 5:08Sometimes it's a major disease, and having to relinquish control over what we
- 5:13can and can't do physically, mentally, emotionally.
- 5:16And that can be a wonderful source of growth.
- 5:20So relationships and emotional health are a big topic.
- 5:24It's one of the, obviously, facets of the trend method that I discuss with my
- 5:29clients. And it's one thing that we constantly come back to.
- 5:32Constantly coming back to, how does your body feel? How are you feeling today when you wake up?
- 5:37What's your emotional state like? who is causing some friction in your life
- 5:43and why do you think that is? We discuss that. We go over that.
- 5:46Because great data show that maybe 50% of people who go to a primary care doctor
- 5:54for any kind of chronic disease have an underlying emotional or mental or psychiatric
- 6:02medical condition that's preventing them from being able to properly manage that condition.
- 6:0650%. That's huge. Thank you.
- 6:09If we can address that and improve that, decrease that, that's one of the most
- 6:14important things that we can do.
- 6:15And as always with the trend method, there's first order, second order, third order actions.
- 6:21First order action is going to get you there the majority of the way.
- 6:25It's the most potent intervention you can do for yourself.
- 6:28Second order is going to get you there a little bit more. Third order,
- 6:32just a tiny bit of improvement.
- 6:34That's for the perfectionists out there who really want to get the most out of their health.
- 6:39And in my trend method i always ask what
- 6:42is it that you can do for yourself that's the first question the second
- 6:45question is what is it that i can do for you such as
- 6:48hold you accountable help you with the next steps
- 6:51help you troubleshoot help you analyze certain tests and results and symptoms
- 6:55and the third question is what can western medical western medical system do
- 7:00for you because let's not forget one of the most beautiful technologies we have
- 7:06is western medicine that many medications, treatments,
- 7:10protocols, surgeries, and sometimes those have to be utilized even in mental
- 7:14well-being, emotional health, and in other psychiatric conditions.
- 7:19So I hope this is of value to you. If you find such content valuable,
