- 2:57Brian Dayton, Vice President, of Polise and Advocacy Well the West Virginia
- 3:00Chamber of Commerce. Brian, good morning, how are you, Dave.
- 3:05I am well, a great Christmas and right in early Tuesday morning. It's
- 3:08great to be on the show again. This is going to be one of
- 3:10those weeks where nobody knows what day it is, you know, yes,
- 3:15because it's like I've sitt there last night at my house and I looked at
- 3:19my wife and I've made some reference to to yesterday being Sunday because I was
- 3:24off work, and we're like, no, what day is it? And
- 3:28it's not going to be any better next week either with New Year's it's any
- 3:30better. But normally when we have you on, we'll talk politics. We're
- 3:35going to get that a little bit later on. But I wanted to talk
- 3:37to you, Brian, about about commerce in the business community, of the
- 3:40business climate in West Virginia. I know it's obviously way too early to get
- 3:45a gauge on retail sales and things like that from Christmas, but I mean
- 3:50considered it was just yesterday, but you know, I was talking to a
- 3:52friend of mine, Brian, who operates a retail store in the valley,
- 3:54locally owned place and he said that even in the age of everyone ordering from
- 4:00Amazon and other online portals and with the malls and so on and so forth.
- 4:04And I was surprised, you're going to say this that twenty twenty three
- 4:09was going to be his best year ever in retail. South Now, I
- 4:13know that's not the case for every business or business owners right now, ringing
- 4:15my hands, ringing their hands, going Dexas guy talking about this was just
- 4:18one particular location. But that's pretty that's pretty cool. Nonetheless, I mean,
- 4:24that's fantastic to hear, and we are interested to see what those retail
- 4:28sales bring in for the especially the holiday season. But I think there's a
- 4:31lot of reason to be optimistic about West Virginia right now what's going on in
- 4:35general. Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of work to still
- 4:39do, but we've landed some really big projects coming into West Virginia. If
- 4:44you just look at just over the past, not just the past year,
- 4:46but the past couple of years. New Course Steel Green Power, which is
- 4:48can to be building electric buses here in Kannall County owns a minor mountaintop beverage
- 4:54Procter and Gambles a few years ago BEFOM Energy. Last year, you start
- 4:58looking at that, we have secured some really big investments in West Virginia.
- 5:02And in many of these cases, most of these cases, in fact,
- 5:04we were in competition with other states for where people were looking to build.
- 5:10And so they're now starting to choose West Virginia and that's a positive. It
- 5:15was a couple of weeks ago, was somewhere in the Speaker of the House
- 5:17was talking. He said, we now have more potential investments looking to come
- 5:23into West Virginia than we have the ability to provide investment dollars for. And
- 5:27that's a great scenario because that means we get to start picking and choosing what
- 5:30we want. Whereas a few years ago, if you were looking to come
- 5:32to West Virginia, like, hey, what can we do to get you
- 5:34here? We need you here. Now we can start being a little more
- 5:38selective in our investment dollars. So I think there's a lot of reason to
- 5:41be optimistic, but there is a lot of work to still be bad make
- 5:45sure that we continue moving forward and bringing those opportunities here. And there have
- 5:49been people anytime that I have you to come on the show or somebody else
- 5:54in the business world, and they'll point to this reason or that reason,
- 5:58but the bottom line is they're choosing West Virginia. As you said, now
- 6:03you can and like I said, without fail, anytime i'd ever talk about
- 6:06this, I'll have somebody that'll text to show and I love my Texters,
- 6:10and don't get me wrong, that will text and say, well, this
- 6:12is all because of the Biden administration or so on and so forth. There's
- 6:15those that believe that, Okay, to a certain extent. However, they're
- 6:20choosing West Virginia over Kansas, They're choosing West Virginia over New York, they're
- 6:27choosing West Virginia over Pennsylvania. Fall in the state here, Brian. So
- 6:30there's something that we're doing right that's making sure that these people want to come
- 6:34to West Virginia, you know, And Dave, I think we have some
- 6:39advantages as a state that a lot of others don't. For example, we're
- 6:43small, which means we're very agile. We're very nimble, you know.
- 6:46If you need something to happen here, where, for example, takes the
- 6:50legislature to act, it's much easier to be able to get the West Virginia
- 6:55legislature together, get them on the same page, and do what needs to
- 6:59be done. Then for example, people would be to bring in the California
- 7:01House of Representatives or the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has over two hundred members.
- 7:06We can be very fast and agile here in West Virginia, and that's a
- 7:11benefit. It's also a small state where in some ways everybody knows everybody and
- 7:15so it's a lot easier just to pick up the phone and make the connections,
- 7:18make those things happen. And a lot of businesses are looking for that
- 7:21in this day and age. You know, they're not sitting there trying to
- 7:25figure out who do I have to talk to to worry about this permit.
- 7:28Well, it's really easy to go ahead and get them plugged in, make
- 7:30sure everything's moving and going forward. And as you said, we have a
- 7:34long way to go. Brian, again, we're talking with Brian Dayton from
- 7:38the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce. But people are moving to West Virginia and
- 7:42they're moving to the Kanal Valley. I know that with the Chamber, the
- 7:46Youth Senior statewide organization, but you've seen a lot of growth in the Eastern
- 7:49Panhandle or in the Morgantown area. But you and I both live in Putnam
- 7:54County, and we're seeing people moving to that area yet again, almost like
- 8:01it was in the nineteen nineties. I've got tomorrow, I'll have my good
- 8:03friend from that area, Rich the realtor client on and they just don't have
- 8:07enough houses to go around for people. That it's a good problem to have,
- 8:11I suppose, you know. It's about once a week I get a
- 8:16text message asking if I'm interested in selling my house out in Putnam County,
- 8:18and the answers know if anyone's looking. Right now, we're not looking to
- 8:22move, and I'm gonna talk to missus Dayton about that, but go ahead.
- 8:24Yeah, she really runs the house. But you know, one of
- 8:28the things is we're finally starting to see that we've had more in migration than
- 8:31out migration over the past couple of years. Now from a population standpoint,
- 8:35we're still exceeding ourselves with more deaths and births. Right, that's a problem,
- 8:39But seeing at least the positive numbers on in migration versus out migration has
- 8:45been good. Everything that we're trying to do, however, is about bringing
- 8:50more people back to the state. Giving that opportunity for when somebody graduates college
- 8:56that they can stay here and find a job. Look, I graduated nearly
- 9:00twenty years ago from John Marshall High School. When I could go back right
- 9:03now and look at the top ten students in our class, and I think
- 9:07there's only one that's in West Virginia right now because they had to move to
- 9:11Charlotte or they had to go to Columbus or Pittsburgh or Washington, d C.
- 9:15To find employment. The goal here is to have those opportunities back in
- 9:18West Virginia so that they don't have to make that choice. That our students
- 9:22don't have to leave. So I think we're making a lot of pausitive strides
- 9:26there. We've really improved our business business climate in West Virginia where ten years
- 9:33ago we would have companies that would talk to us and say, there's no
- 9:35way I'm going to come to West Virginia. I'm going to get sued into
- 9:39oblivion if I come here. We fix those problems. We have really fixed
- 9:43a lot of our tax issues here to where it's competitive with other states.
- 9:46So those are things that really need to fix, and now that we fix
- 9:50them, we're able to start bringing bringing some stuff in all right, So
- 9:54again talking to you, Brian Dayton, who is the vice president of Policy
- 9:56and Advocacy for the Western Dega Chamber of Commerce. Nine to seventeen. We've
- 10:01gone this far, we haven't talked politics yet, so you know, I'm
- 10:03sweating over here because it's time to talk a little politics. A couple of
- 10:07things. First, news came down midday Thursday that just after he appeared on
- 10:13this show, Delegate and Google to Canada More Capital announcing he would resign his
- 10:18seat in the legislature to focus on his run for governor. First of all,
- 10:22were you surprised by that move? You know, I can't say that
- 10:26I was surprised. It was really a question would he stay in or would
- 10:30he not? And I can understand it from a campaign standpoint, Saying in
- 10:35the legislature means that you're off the campaign trail for sixty days. And it
- 10:39also means you have a giant target on your back too, absolutely, and
- 10:43then you could do something a little bit you know, controversial, or at
- 10:46least you could be painted in a position on a particular bill. I get
- 10:50it, but go ahead. Yeah, And so you know, it was
- 10:52kind of a question I didn't know whether Delegate Capito would resign or would he
- 10:56not. He's been a fantastic chairman of the Judiciary Committee. From that point,
- 11:00we saw that was a loss, but you know, he's ultimately leaving
- 11:03the legislature regardless after this next session, because he's up or out. He
- 11:09either wins the primary or he's out altogether right now because delegate terms are to
- 11:15your terms. So I can't say it was surprised, but you know,
- 11:18that's the choice he's made, and it's going to be a competitive primary in
- 11:20May. And I know that you folks with the Chamber have been doing some
- 11:24interviews with candidates for elections in twenty twenty four. You kind of you know,
- 11:30I have a formal or informal meeting with some of the people thinking about
- 11:33running for the legislature, just kind of gauge where they are, how those
- 11:35have been going. They've been fantastic. We have a lot of really good
- 11:39people who are stepping forward right now to offer themselves to public service, and
- 11:43that's needed. These are tough jobs. I think a lot of people see
- 11:50political jobs and think, oh, that's easy. They're not. You're going
- 11:52to be facing a lot of tough decisions. You are going to make people
- 11:56mad, You're going to make your friends mad, You're probably going to make
- 11:58your family mad on occasion. It's not the glamorous, easy job that a
- 12:03lot of people think, but it's so important. We have to have good
- 12:05people serving in the constitutional offices. We have to have good people serving in
- 12:09the legislature because they are making the decisions that are going to determine whether we're
- 12:15going to be able to continue attracting investment to West Virginia attracting those opportunities,
- 12:18or whether that drives up, and the policies that are pursued can help determine
- 12:24that whether we go forward or whether we go backward. So we've had a
- 12:26lot of fantastic meetings people from all walks of life, and it's been I've
- 12:31really enjoyed getting to know these candidates. But we're wanting to make sure that
- 12:35we have people who want to keep the ball moving forward in the overall goal
- 12:39of more jobs, more economic development, more opportunity, better education, to
- 12:46really just keep moving us forward so that we can ultimately go back to that
- 12:50goal I just talked about of having people stay here in West Virginia if they
- 12:54choose I want to talk about endorsements before we let you go. How do
- 12:56you, folks with the Chamber make the decision to endor or a particular candidate
- 13:01and what are you looking forward in candidates? Sure, so there are a
- 13:05number of things. Let me let me break it down. There's incomings versus
- 13:07people who are not incomments. Let me just take incombans first. We have
- 13:11a very robust legislative scorecard and that scorecard is based on issues that matter to
- 13:18the West Virginia Chamber and its members. And our members are located across the
- 13:22entire state, all five thousand, and they're in in every industrial sector in
- 13:26the state, looking for a better business climate, more opportunity. But that
- 13:30scorecard is based on those issues and we pull together several members. It's people
- 13:35that are there are people that are very involved at the Capitol, involved in
- 13:39the process, and we go through those issues, determine how much they weigh,
- 13:43and then what are the interactions like with particular legislators. So it is
- 13:48a member driven process, but that scorecard informs a lot of our decision making
- 13:52for incoments on whether they get endorsed. When it comes to candidates who are
- 13:56not incombents, they don't have a record, So we have candidate questionnaires that
- 14:00really just try to find out what do they believe. We're not looking for
- 14:03people that are going to agree with us one hundred percent of the time,
- 14:05because that doesn't exist. But we're also looking for people who are doing it
- 14:11for the right reasons. Why do you want to get into this office.
- 14:15Are you trying to go ahead and achieve a particular goal or are you trying
- 14:18to go ahead in for a personal reason? And that can be sometimes concerning
- 14:22if it's that, or are you trying to go ahead and do it for
- 14:24the overall benefit of West Virginia making it a better place to live, work
- 14:28and raise a family. So we have those meetings, and really the best
- 14:33way to do it is sometimes to sit down and talk to somebody for an
- 14:35hour or two hours and just get to know them a little bit. Brian,
- 14:39it's always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll have you
- 14:41on again soon. A final question, I guess would be twenty twenty four,
- 14:46not talking about the legislative session. I'll talking about politics right now.
- 14:48What do you see on the horizon for business in West Virginia in the year
- 14:52twenty twenty four. You know, I'm an optimist. I think we're going
- 14:56to go ahead and continue to see some growth in West Virginia. I think
- 15:00it could be a little bit difficult, just depending on how the markets perform.
- 15:05What happens overall with the national economy will affect West Virginia. But I
- 15:09think there's a lot of reason for optimism right now. So I'm going into
- 15:11the new year with a smile on my face. All Right, Well,
- 15:13well, talk to you in the new year. And we'll also be talking
- 15:18to you, I'm sure during the session because you're kind of hanging out at
- 15:20the capital more than some of the legislators, are you folks there, you're
- 15:24always there keeping it eye on. Thanks Brian Dayton again the vice president of
- 15:28Policy and Advocacy for the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce. Brian, have a
- 15:31happy new year. We'll talk against some of our friend thanks a lot.

- 18:34we're talking about the business climate of West Virginia in twenty twenty three.
- 18:37Text says, as of today is what starts. By Saint Dave. I'm
- 18:41a downtown business owner. As of today, our sales are up twenty four
- 18:44point eight percent over last year, which was our biggest year ever. For
- 18:48the period of Black Friday to Christmas, sales were up thirty two percent over
- 18:52last year. Also, our online sales are up fifteen percent over last year.
- 18:56Of the retailers downtown had great years two and yes, we collect every
- 19:02customer's phone number, and we've added over one hundred new clients who have moved
- 19:06to the valley. According to a Texter, well, the Christmas season is
- 19:10traditionally a time for movies, but there's one premierre in in the area soon
- 19:12that special meanings of the area. Because let's star as a local guy.
- 19:15His name is Ashley Stinnett and he joins me now, Ashley, good morning,
- 19:18welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave, Merry Christmas, Merry
- 19:22Christmas, Happy New Year, and all that stuff. So the film is
- 19:26called The Good Fight and it stars you a local guy. We're gonna get
- 19:30to your background little later on. Also John Schneider, who will be forever
- 19:34known to the seventies and eighties kids like myself as Bo Duke, is in
- 19:38the film as well. Give us the whole premise of the film that we'll
- 19:42get into how this came to involve a local guy, but just give us
- 19:45the whole concept behind the film. Yeah, yeah, thanks for having me
- 19:48on this post Christmas survival season. So the movie, this character Luke O'Connor
- 19:57is he's one of these guys that just doesn't want to grow up. He's
- 20:03like this forever frat type individual. You say that like it's a bad thing.
- 20:07I know, right, I know. Yeah. When I read the
- 20:10script, I'm like, and I wait a minute, this is eerily familiar
- 20:12here to me as the world's oldest frat boy. So fifty three, but
- 20:18go ahead, go ahead. So the guy doesn't really want to grow up.
- 20:22He used to box. Now he trains boxers. He is like this
- 20:29engineer by day, but he has this very hard partying life. He does
- 20:34having an alcoholic problem and as a result, he's losing his wife and daughter
- 20:41rapidly through a lot of just a series of really bad decisions. And so
- 20:47the Good Fight, you know, it's kind of like a double meeting there
- 20:52because throughout the movie, the viewers get a chance to see not only his
- 20:57fight, but the surrounding cast their fights as well. And it's really a
- 21:03unique movie in that it is a boxing movie, but it is a faith
- 21:06based movie. So I don't know the official rating, would someone would be
- 21:11between PG and PG thirteen, uh, and that maybe that's just because of
- 21:15the fight scenes of boxing scenes, But it really is a family film and
- 21:19it does start John Schneider. He came up and filmed for about a week
- 21:25in the Huntington, Ashland, Chesapeake area, and he plays my attorney in
- 21:30the film, who's helping to guide me throughout this process of making a lot
- 21:36of bad decisions. I don't want to give away too much of it.
- 21:40The deeper I get into, the more I'm gonna give away some of us.
- 21:44So you're from Vallette, Yeah, yeah originally. Yeah, how in
- 21:47the world there is a guy from Lavallette very involved in the business community in
- 21:52the Canal Valley. That's actually where I know you're from. Yeah, how
- 21:53in the world do you get involved in a film project like this? Well,
- 21:57you know, I'm kind of showing my age here. Over twenty years
- 22:03ago, I spent some time in Wilmington, North Carolina. I always wanted
- 22:07to be an actor, and I was working down there at Screen Gym Studios
- 22:10in Wilmington, and at the time, I was working on a show called
- 22:14Dawson's Creek and just really trying to learn the ins and outs of the show.
- 22:18Got to do some principal extra work, you know, not nothing too
- 22:22major. Came back, finished my degree at Marshall and then would always kind
- 22:26of play around with it, you know, I've always done you know,
- 22:29some like regional commercial work and just some things like that. But you know,
- 22:33would do some short films here and there. But you know, I
- 22:37just really got re energized into this about five years ago and it's just been
- 22:42full steam ahead. Even before COVID, the industry was changing with self tapes.
- 22:48You know, you would get an agent, they would you know,
- 22:52casting directors would send companies scripts and then you would get linked up with those
- 22:56companies and whatnot. Now there's even online plat forms that you can be a
- 23:02part of to get this. So I've just been grinding it out man,
- 23:06for the last you know, probably seven years, and been really fortunate enough,
- 23:11you know. And these are also the days where you don't have to
- 23:15move to LA or New York or Atlanta. You know, again, you
- 23:18can get these self tape opportunities. You get a script, you audition,
- 23:21you submit it, you get the part, you go there, film and
- 23:23you come back. And now and now people are living all over the US,
- 23:27they're not even you know, you talk to a lot of these actors
- 23:30now they don't live in LA or New York, right, I mean,
- 23:33but talk about your background in the business world. I mean, you've done
- 23:37a little bit of everything outside of acting in the business world. Yeah,
- 23:41yeah, you know, I got my degree at Marshall, ended up getting
- 23:45a master's at what's now Wheeling University, and have been involved in higher education,
- 23:51been involved in public relations side of things. Yeah, community relations as
- 23:55you're an expertise in, and you know, work for nonprofits, work for
- 24:00for profits, work for colleges. Uh so yeah, I mean the last
- 24:06it's funny because people think, well, you know, you do film or
- 24:10TV work. I mean, that must be all you do. And it's
- 24:11like, that's less than one percent. You know, less you're you're you're
- 24:15Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon. You know that crowd is less than one percent
- 24:21every all the rest of us have a real job, a day job.
- 24:26Not to say that's not a real job. Yeah, you know, it's
- 24:27a it's a it's a great opportunity. You get paid for it. It's
- 24:32it's a neat kind of world to live in, a neat atmosphere. But
- 24:37you know, with the film tax credit that is now in West Virginia,
- 24:41I'm still in that business mindset. So it's weird. You know, I
- 24:45shift when I'm when I'm doing this stuff. It's still the acting mindset.
- 24:48But it's still the entrepreneurial mindset. How do we get these productions in West
- 24:52Virginia to watch? You know, to just add one more conversation to the
- 24:56economic diversification table. And there is again we're talking with Ashley Stennett. There
- 25:03is a move on to try to get I know you're heavily involved to try
- 25:07to get more things filmed in West Virginia via TV shows or be it movies
- 25:12or whatever. I mean, that's actually there is a film office, as
- 25:17you said, in Westernia. It's actually been there for some time. But
- 25:18there's really a concerted effort now to try to get these films done in West
- 25:22Virginia. There really is, and it truly is a rising title. It's
- 25:26all shit people think movies in the movie industry. You know, we're all
- 25:30heavy, heavy consumers of entertainment. I mean, we all have streaming platforms.
- 25:33You know, we love to watch movies and TV. But it's still
- 25:37a little bit of an alien concept that we have to reprogram ourselves to not
- 25:41just be consumers but be producers of this. We can do that right here
- 25:45in West Virginia. If you look at what happened with Georgia, you know,
- 25:48twenty years ago, it really wasn't on everybody's radar. And now it's
- 25:52a multi billion dollar industry. It's masses or Georgia. Yeah, and even
- 25:56where I've spent time in Wilmington, and I have since been back to Wilming
- 26:00than to work on a feature film. You know, their economy is growing
- 26:03because of that. So wherever there's a film tax credit in the industry lives,
- 26:07you see an economic boost. Mom and pop restaurants, car dealerships,
- 26:11you know, mom and pop hardware stores, plus all of the blue collar
- 26:15jobs. And a lot of these jobs don't even require college degrees. And
- 26:18what people I think sometimes they think, Okay, a film is being done
- 26:22in West Virginia, Well, the actors are going to come in, that's
- 26:25it. I mean what it's one hundred hundred and fifty people that come into,
- 26:27as you said, build sets, to do makeup, to do catering
- 26:32in these sort of things. And those people have to eventually go shopping.
- 26:36They're eventually going to go to the restaurants. They're eventually So it's a And
- 26:38to your point about Georgia, anytime that you think that Georgia is not a
- 26:42major player in this watch any television show. Watch through the credits to any
- 26:48motion picture and see if you see that Peach logo that they have it says
- 26:52film. I mean even family Feud is for you know, Steve Harvey,
- 26:56and that that could be West Virginia. Yeah. I saw this study that
- 27:00was done. I think it's maybe two years old now, but it was
- 27:03like, of the top one hundred quote unquote big budget films, over ninety
- 27:08of them were filmed in Georgia, not even in la And I know that
- 27:11when The Good Fight was filming in Huntington. I believe over well over eighty
- 27:15eighty five percent of the production crew on that movie. And this is a
- 27:18feature link film, I would argue the biggest since we are Marshall. If
- 27:22you look at size of cast crew, you know, a celebrities in it,
- 27:26the budget, but over eighty five percent of the production crew in that
- 27:29movie where Marshall University graduates and I watched local businesses, you know, get
- 27:34the benefits of that production happening. And this started during COVID and there was
- 27:41a pause in it, so it was filmed incrementally over like two and a
- 27:45half years. Yeah. Yeah, I was actually doing little research on the
- 27:48film on mind and there was a couple of behind the scenes pictures with people
- 27:52with masks on the whole. I started boxing training August of twenty twenty,
- 27:59and that was yeah, I mean, that was right in the thick of
- 28:02things for COVID. Did you have any experience going into this as a boxer?
- 28:06I had none. Zero. It was a shout out to Hella fit
- 28:11in Hurricane Jace Heller is the guy that got me in shape, got me
- 28:15in fight or form for that movie. I had none, And I did
- 28:19learn very quickly that it's hard to make a boxing movie and not get a
- 28:23little bit wrecked. So I took some shots, right, Well, that's
- 28:26part of it, but I also learned I didn't have a glass jaw.
- 28:30Well, it's good to know. Now. The movie is being shown locally
- 28:34as a matter of fact, and I think I've got this right. If
- 28:37not, you can correct me. It'll be shown at Marque's Cinemas and Huntington
- 28:41Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and we'll have information posted on that on the
- 28:45Dave Island Radio Facebook page. So that's I mean, so people can go
- 28:49and actually watch this movie at one of those cinemas, right, They can't
- 28:52at Marquie at Pullman. Friday night will be the big kind of like the
- 28:56premiere night, you know, the back drop pictures with the cast, things
- 29:00like that. And then but if you're in the uh, if you're in
- 29:06Putnam County, Tayese Valley Cinemas has now picked up a showing okay, Saturday,
- 29:11January sixth at seven o'clock. So if you want to catch that showing,
- 29:15or if you're even you know, on this side of Knawa and you
- 29:18want to you know, come over to Taes Valley Cinemas. It is going
- 29:22to show there. So you'll have the Huntington and Tese Valley showings that weekend.
- 29:26Okay, And so is this going to be a widespread release across the
- 29:30country? How How are people in other areas to see Church? There's a
- 29:33lot of things happening behind the scenes, and I do feel pretty good there'll
- 29:37be some good news coming out in the not too distant future. We are
- 29:41working on a limited release. I know in North Carolina there's there's some theaters
- 29:45all across the state that's going to pick up the movie and then just kind
- 29:48of go from there. You know, it's the movie's finished and we think
- 29:53folks are really going to enjoy it. And you know, and and it's
- 29:59a big deal for the area because it was shot here. You know,
- 30:03most of the post production was done in Nashville, but the movie was filmed
- 30:07here locally in this area and features some local talent, and we just want
- 30:15folks to have that movie theater experience. It's hard to replicate that. I
- 30:18mean it is even at the house you got a seventy inch you got your
- 30:22bows or your surround sound, it's still hard to replicate a movie theater.
- 30:26Yeah, there's nothing like it. And you mentioned that the film is a
- 30:30faith based film. That's been a growing genre of motion pictures actually over the
- 30:34last ten fifteen years or something. This is an entire industry on these faith
- 30:38based films. Yeah, if you look at the popularity of independent faith based
- 30:42films, like you know, Sound of Freedom with Jim Cavizl that came out,
- 30:48Now, that was a little bit of a different genre, but it
- 30:51was one of those that were just it really hit the scene with very little
- 30:53marketing and it took off. I think recently the Shift has been playing in
- 31:00theaters. Angel Studios has kind of been carving out their own niche for that,
- 31:04and you know it does give the audience, uh, you know,
- 31:08just an alternative film, just something different and again something that you could take
- 31:14the family to and uh, something that has a lot of meaning and and
- 31:18a lot of people can relate to, you know it. And that's what
- 31:22I think this movie delivers. And for people that you like myself, that
- 31:27like boxing in that aspect, I mean it has that in it too,
- 31:30got a little bit of everything, got the action to have any Is there
- 31:33any sort of like a romantic plot in there because you got to have that?
- 31:37Not really, I mean yes and no married, but it's very touch
- 31:44and go, Okay. I do think people the journey throughout the movie,
- 31:48I do think is very believable. I think people will again can can maybe
- 31:53relate to it personally or I'm sure they certainly know someone or know of someone
- 31:57that maybe has faced some of these struggles. And the good thing is there's
- 32:00multiple back stories at play, so there's a lot of character development. You
- 32:04know, it's it's other people in the film are facing their own fight,
- 32:08and so I think people will really enjoy that aspect of it. But you
- 32:13know, I'm excited and I really do want to impress upon people, you
- 32:16know, do some research into the film industry. I mean, I we
- 32:21have everything here but the ocean as far as locations, and I do think
- 32:24this is a filmmaker's paradise and we could see more big productions. Now,
- 32:29this certainly was not, you know, a multi multimillion dollar production, but
- 32:32it was a very big production, you know, certainly for this area.
- 32:37And we think we can certainly continue with more than that. Well. And
- 32:42I think when you look back at some of the films that have either been
- 32:46set in West Virginia, Ashley or that have had a West Virginia touch to
- 32:51them, I mean they were filmed in like New Jersey, you know,
- 32:52the Model Man Stop and stuff like that. Yeah, you know, let's
- 32:55Tennessee's let's have that here. I mean, as you said, we've got
- 33:00a little bit of everything here, and we can show that West Virginia is
- 33:02a beautiful state. Yeah, and we do have a lot, as you
- 33:07said, going for everything but an ocean. And uh and we're not far
- 33:09from that, to to speak, not too far. No, we're not
- 33:13too far. We can make the Canal River look like yeah. So and
- 33:16I got and I would be remiss if I didn't ask you about John Schneider
- 33:20because again, you're a kid of the seventies, as I'm older than you,
- 33:22but a kid of the seventies. You know, Bo Duke was a
- 33:25little bit of a hot water last week, did did John Schneider? Uh?
- 33:30But uh, that's that not having notwithstanding what kind of guy was John
- 33:35Schneider. Oh, he was a very personable guy, very personal guy.
- 33:40Now it's unfortunate because not too long after filming wrapped his wife passed. Yeah,
- 33:50and you know, so she was battling a major illness obviously, and
- 33:55but he was he was really very down to earth, personal guy to be
- 34:00around. I mean he yeah, I mean he would just he enjoyed his
- 34:05time here in the area. He visited a lot of places, took a
- 34:08lot of pictures. Thought it was just beautiful, and you know, he
- 34:14was. He was really good to work with, really good to work with.
- 34:16And the I didn't realize the fanfare behind him. It was hard to
- 34:20keep people away at these locations. I mean it really was. Once people
- 34:24learned about not just Dukes of Hazard, but he had like this. He
- 34:28has a fan base for Tyler Perry's The Haves and the have nots. He
- 34:32was on that show, was like the main villain for years, and then
- 34:36he was in Smallville. So it's funny to see all the people that used
- 34:39to watch Smallville and they remembered, oh, that Superman's dad and so yeah,
- 34:45generation but yeah, and bo do I mean that was obviously, you
- 34:52know, a main a main component of the fanfare, certainly in this area.
- 34:57But yeah, there's a lot of people that that when realized he was
- 35:00in town, they saw they would be at a location or something. And
- 35:02because we didn't do a whole lot of the closed set atmosphere, you know,
- 35:06we tried to keep it tight, you know, tried to keep a
- 35:08walk on stuff. But you can only go so far far. Yeah.
- 35:12Yeah. And also he was the he was the mask singer last week.
- 35:15I was told that he was. I've never watched the show of the Mask
- 35:19Singer, but I heard people in the office talking about it that he was
- 35:22unmasked. I guess as the mass singer last week too. Yeah, So
- 35:24give us the lowdown on the screenings for the motion picture locally against Yeah.
- 35:29So the weekend of the fifth, sixth, and seventh, Marquee Cinemas at
- 35:34Pulman Square and Huntington. Friday night's the premiere at seven. You can catch
- 35:37the movie Saturday at noon. You can catch the movie on Sunday at four
- 35:42pm. Nice little post church family faith based film. Tickets are on available
- 35:46online for those showings and then again Tays Valley Cinemas on Saturday, January sixth
- 35:52at six at seven pm. The sixth at seven. It's hard to say.
- 35:58Tickets available online, and I would encourage folks tickets are you going pretty
- 36:01good? So I would encourage folks to get online to get their tickets now
- 36:05if they want to see this movie. And you're a local guy up you
- 36:07still live here in the area. Yeah, I'm Putnam County. Yeah,
- 36:10another Putnam County and doing stuff. At least one of us is so Ashley.
- 36:15I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be here. I know
- 36:17you got a lot of a lot of press that you can be doing around
- 36:22the area over this. Best luck in future projects, because I have a
- 36:23feeling this is not going to I hope it's not going to be the last
- 36:25one. I think there's gonna be a lot more come out of this film
- 36:29industry in West Virginia. I appreciate you being here too. Thanks a lot.

- 41:22are you working today? Obviously I am, Dale Cooper is, but many
- 41:30are not. It's kind of weird because you know, today is not a
- 41:34state holiday, but offices in the city at Charleston, Charleston City Hall,
- 41:38the Canawa County Courthouse are closed. And and I was talking about this with
- 41:44somebody the other day. Look, hey, I'm all for people getting rest
- 41:46and relaxation or time with the family or whatever is important to them. But
- 41:50the way the calendar fell this year, here was the scenario for a lot
- 41:59of people either took off work or their companies let them off on Friday or
- 42:04maybe an early out. I think our office here closed around two o'clock Friday
- 42:07afternoon. Then, of course you had the weekend with Christmas Eve, Christmas
- 42:12Day being yesterday, and now on Tuesday. Good luck finding anyone in today.
- 42:21I know a lot of people here and our building are off today,
- 42:22and I would imagine most companies are are that way this week. Matter of
- 42:28fact, our sister station V one hundred did a pull on their Facebook page
- 42:34and I actually shared it on Dave Alan Radio on Facebook, just asking people
- 42:40whether or not they were working today or this week, and most other people
- 42:46seem to say no, that they're not working today or for the rest of
- 42:52the week. And I would imagine that a lot of people will be off
- 42:59on Tuesday, January two as well, many off of course, as I
- 43:06said, the entire week, including this Friday. And trust me, I'm
- 43:12not hating on this. But as someone said to me back on Friday,
- 43:17when did Christmas become a two and a half week vacation? Because that's kind
- 43:22of that's kind of where we are right now now. You know, in
- 43:28back back back in my day, when the you know, we were in
- 43:31school, we always got the week after Christmas off. I was usually bored
- 43:37and wanted to go back to school. But that's that's just me. But
- 43:40now it has become basically a big old week, two week vacation. Uh.
- 43:49And as Americans h in general, uh, we work less and and
- 43:58with many younger people, many many, the man said, many, not
- 44:02all. One of the first things that they ask about when being interviewed for
- 44:10a job is how much time do they get off? And for many that's
- 44:19more important than asking how they're getting paid. Again, I'm not sitting in
- 44:27judgment here. I guess I'm just asking the I guess I'm just asking questions

- 44:34it sounds like you are now I'm not. I'm just asking questions of our
- 44:38society that seems to want to work less and less and less. I am
- 44:43all for people, and what happens at the end of the year is a
- 44:45lot of times and I know people very close to me that are facing this.
- 44:50What happens at the end of the year is they have these accrude days
- 44:52because they didn't take them off during the year, and it's basically a take
- 44:55them or lose them. And I have been somebody who was involved in state
- 44:59govern meant they realized that working the week after Christmas was almost pointless because no
- 45:05one that we wanted to, no one that we needed to see in that
- 45:10role I was doing in state government at the time, was in so it
- 45:14was pretty much just kind of a waste of time. And I became one
- 45:16of those people that was taken up because there was there was nothing to do.

- 49:19Jeff Jenkins with the story post at wv Metronews dot com. Charleston Mayor Amy
- 49:23Shulter Goodwin and members of city council have their respective names on a letter to
- 49:30members of the state's congressional delegation concerning the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
- 49:37Now you can read the story again. We read the letter, I should
- 49:39say as part of Jeff's story posted at wv metronews dot com. A side
- 49:45note here. Congress is still up in the air on a new funding package
- 49:50for Israel. The talks are set to resume after the Christmas break. The
- 49:54letter from the mayor and from council was sent to Senators Ansion and Capitol and
- 50:00Congresswoman Carol Miller. And you know I was talking about this earlier. It
- 50:06seems like a like a no brainer that pretty much everyone would be on board
- 50:12to support Israel. But as we have seen across the country with protest on
- 50:17college campuses and whatnot, that simply isn't the case. And even with this
- 50:24letter that fifteen twenty years ago probably would have kind of gone unnoticed, This
- 50:30letter on behalf of the mayor and city council that went out. There was
- 50:36even some chatter online over the weekend that some local folks not talking about campuses
- 50:40of Harvard and why I'm talking about local folks were upset that the mayor and
- 50:47council took the step to do this proclamation. And as you've heard me say
- 50:55on the show before, the the Democratic establishment and I'm talking about, let's
- 51:02say, the Biden administration and support of Israel is going to be problematic on
- 51:10the national front for many of the more far left members of the National Democrat
- 51:19Party. And based on some of the comments that I saw, although I'd
- 51:21say they're probably much in the minority a certain extent here, but I think
- 51:25it's a much bigger deal nationally because there are those that are real those that
- 51:31identify as liberal, I mean talking about super left wing that are really taking
- 51:36the Biden administration to task for their stance on the conflict between Israel and AMASA.
- 51:43It's going to be a big deal as it comes to as we head
- 51:46into twenty twenty four. In the presidential extent. A reminder of the text
