- 0:26Speaker 1: Marucci Hitters House. The news if you missed it just breaking.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Chris Olave and the New Orleans Saints, according to Adam Schefter,
- 0:34Speaker 1: have agreed to a four year contract extension a ninety
- 0:39Speaker 1: million in guaranteed money over one hundred and thirty million.
- 0:44Speaker 1: One thirty two is the max value of the deal.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Ross Jackson sometimes timing in life, better to be lucky
- 0:50Speaker 1: than good head. Ross schedule to join us right right
- 0:52Speaker 1: as this news break, so we have the opportunity to
- 0:55Speaker 1: let Ross react to it. Okay, the deal is reportedly done.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Your reaction, Yeah, massive, massive for New Orleans and this
- 1:03Speaker 2: is exactly what it is that they wanted to get done.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Both sides were motivated to get a contract finished. I
- 1:08Speaker 2: think that the hold in for the first two days
- 1:11Speaker 2: of practice was probably something that maybe sorted to cast
- 1:14Speaker 2: a little bit of a great cloud over the negotiations.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But the truth of the matter is that all of
- 1:19Speaker 2: that was very clearly communicated when it came to both
- 1:22Speaker 2: sides of this thing, and that all together they just
- 1:24Speaker 2: wanted to get this steal done and lands right around
- 1:26Speaker 2: where we thought it would be really closer to the
- 1:29Speaker 2: floor than the Seeds Matt. We kind of looked at
- 1:33Speaker 2: Garrett Garrett wilson one hundred and thirty million dollar deal
- 1:36Speaker 2: as kind of the floor for this thing, and so
- 1:38Speaker 2: he just barely clears that at one point thirty two
- 1:41Speaker 2: is the maximum value of it. And so this feels
- 1:43Speaker 2: like a good deal for both sides. Both sides gets
- 1:45Speaker 2: the commitment that they were looking for. It was expected
- 1:48Speaker 2: to be a really, really bright season for Crystal lave.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Or in New Orleans. So on an average annual value,
- 1:53Speaker 1: he's the sixth highest paid receiver in the NFL. I
- 1:56Speaker 1: know Ross, I am on an island, Okay, I do
- 1:59Speaker 1: not believe he is worth that. He's a phenomenal player.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'm glad he got his contract and deserves.
- 2:04Speaker 2: To be paid.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think they overpaid. Convince. Since I'm the only one
- 2:09Speaker 1: on the island and everyone else listening and watching right now,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I agree with you. Convince me why they did not
- 2:14Speaker 1: overpay for Chris Olave.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look, I'll say this. I think we
- 2:19Speaker 2: all know that you're not the easiest person that convinced.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So you're giving me a pretty big task. Yes, but
- 2:23Speaker 2: I can't. It can be done, but it can be done.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So here here's what I would say. Does it matter
- 2:28Speaker 2: to you that Chris Olave was one of the sixth
- 2:31Speaker 2: most targeted receivers in the NFL last year?
- 2:34Speaker 1: It does because there were no other good receivers on
- 2:36Speaker 1: the Saint rosters, so they forced the ball to him
- 2:38Speaker 1: because he was the only one great.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And would you say the same thing about a Puka
- 2:42Speaker 2: Nakua and an A'man Ross Saint Brown and a Jamar
- 2:45Speaker 2: Chase and a Justin Jefferson.
- 2:47Speaker 1: No, because they've had better number twos and threes on
- 2:50Speaker 1: their rosters than New Orleans did a year ago.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Right, So, when everything was on Chris Olave's shoulders to
- 2:55Speaker 2: produce in the passing game, he produced like one of
- 2:57Speaker 2: the most elite wide receivers in the NFL, amongst those
- 3:00Speaker 2: that also managed to be able to do that in
- 3:02Speaker 2: situations where they're sharing some of those reps, and sharing
- 3:04Speaker 2: some of those reps is a big thing. That's what
- 3:06Speaker 2: Chris Alave is going to be doing here in twenty
- 3:07Speaker 2: twenty six. I think with Jordan Tyson kind of added
- 3:11Speaker 2: to that add ite mix. But I do think that
- 3:13Speaker 2: when you look at what it is that Chris Lave did,
- 3:15Speaker 2: who also finished with a second team All Pro season,
- 3:17Speaker 2: who also became only the second wide receiver in New
- 3:20Speaker 2: Orleans Saints franchise history to even meet the century mark
- 3:23Speaker 2: in terms of pass catchers, it's across any position group
- 3:26Speaker 2: across the entire history of this franchise, I think that
- 3:29Speaker 2: all of that kind of comes together to kind of
- 3:31Speaker 2: explain a little bit of why it is the Saints
- 3:33Speaker 2: feels so so strongly that this is the guy that
- 3:36Speaker 2: is the number one in their system. He also averaged
- 3:39Speaker 2: over one hundred and ten receiving yards over the course
- 3:41Speaker 2: of the last two games the season that he played
- 3:43Speaker 2: in a season where there was no other wide receiver
- 3:47Speaker 2: option outside of him, So yes, he was forced better
- 3:49Speaker 2: those situations, but he was being relied upon to be
- 3:52Speaker 2: the top wide receiver in the room. He cashed in
- 3:54Speaker 2: on that, he made good on that, he arrived on that,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and that's one of the reasons why you pay him.
- 3:58Speaker 1: If they're so convinced, why do they use the ninth
- 4:00Speaker 1: overall pick on another receiver.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I think that there's an opportunity there to be able
- 4:05Speaker 2: to kind of replicate what it is that what the
- 4:08Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles had for Kellen Moore with AJ Brown and
- 4:11Speaker 2: DeVonta Smith, two guys that were also both early draft picks.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But I don't think one necessarily can set out the
- 4:17Speaker 2: value of either. They wanted to be in an offense
- 4:20Speaker 2: where they had two big time options. They now have
- 4:22Speaker 2: two big time options, one of which getting paid four
- 4:25Speaker 2: years after or four years ahead or sorry, four years
- 4:29Speaker 2: after coming into the league. And now they're on a
- 4:31Speaker 2: perfect timeline to be able to have this contract extension done,
- 4:35Speaker 2: have it in place while Jordan Tyson's on his rookie deal,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and then by the time that Jordan Tyson's new rookie
- 4:40Speaker 2: deal runs up and they get into a conversation about
- 4:43Speaker 2: an extension there, they'll be clear of the books. Here.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It's just smart spending.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I think you have one really good option that you're
- 4:49Speaker 1: paying like a great option, and one potentially great option
- 4:52Speaker 1: if he lives up to it. But time will tell.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I hope I'm wrong, but I think they overpaid for
- 4:57Speaker 1: Chris A. Lovey will agree, I will disagree, will agree
- 4:59Speaker 1: to get But I know, I know I'm the only
- 5:02Speaker 1: person standing at least I'm the only person with a
- 5:06Speaker 1: platform willing to scream this into the ether because I
- 5:09Speaker 1: think there's probably a lot there's there are probably a
- 5:11Speaker 1: lot of other people that agree, and they're they're waiting
- 5:13Speaker 1: with bated breath to see how it plays. Okay, Central
- 5:16Speaker 1: back on the practice field today for day two. Obviously,
- 5:19Speaker 1: the massive story is Brian Brazie's injury. No pads yet, Ross,
- 5:24Speaker 1: Can you tell it all yet? What their plan is
- 5:28Speaker 1: to do to replace Brazil?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that their their plan is to continue
- 5:34Speaker 2: to roll with the other guy that had to experience
- 5:37Speaker 2: playing that sort of three four defensive end position. It's
- 5:41Speaker 2: a little bit of a misnomer in this particular system
- 5:45Speaker 2: to refer to Brian Brazee as a defensive tackle now,
- 5:48Speaker 2: even though that's what he was drafted as, just because
- 5:51Speaker 2: of what it is that these these tackles are into
- 5:54Speaker 2: your defensive line but are now asked has to do.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And so, uh, the other guy on the roster that
- 6:00Speaker 2: has done this already and kind of held this role
- 6:03Speaker 2: is Nathan Shepherd. And this is the guy that's a
- 6:05Speaker 2: veteran player. He played that role well last year, had
- 6:08Speaker 2: a pretty big breakout game against his former team, actually,
- 6:11Speaker 2: the New York Jets, And so I think that they're
- 6:15Speaker 2: going to turn to him as the guy that's going
- 6:17Speaker 2: to be able to help him out over on that
- 6:18Speaker 2: side of the ball and be able to play sort
- 6:20Speaker 2: of that three or four defensive end role. And then
- 6:22Speaker 2: outside of that, I wouldn't be surprised if maybe they're,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you know, eventually checking in on the trademarkt mid August
- 6:28Speaker 2: to see if there are some other opportunities or other
- 6:31Speaker 2: players that they could potentially go out and get there.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But today we saw a lot more Nsan Shepherd playing
- 6:36Speaker 2: that role, Vernon Broughton playing that role, and John Ridgeway
- 6:40Speaker 2: the third playing that role, with Shepherd being the guy
- 6:42Speaker 2: that's most experienced already in that in that responsibility.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Ross Jackson's with us Locked on Saints podcast You can
- 6:48Speaker 1: Get It YouTube or podcast wheich you can read him
- 6:51Speaker 1: over at Louisiana Sports dot Net. The day two practice
- 6:55Speaker 1: board notes will be up here shortly at Louisiana Sports
- 6:57Speaker 1: dot Net. I guess also notable kool Aid mckinsrey. A
- 7:01Speaker 1: little bit of an ankle injury doesn't sound serious? What
- 7:04Speaker 1: can you tell us?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly it. I mean, like he had he
- 7:08Speaker 2: had a really strong play again today in the second
- 7:11Speaker 2: day of camp. He has been a big time kind
- 7:14Speaker 2: of you know, showcase guy here so far, like one
- 7:17Speaker 2: of the players that you point to. It's going to
- 7:19Speaker 2: stand out already. He ended up with a rolled ankle
- 7:23Speaker 2: at some point during practice today and the Saints allowed
- 7:27Speaker 2: him to finish the team drills and and kind of
- 7:30Speaker 2: finish the day. Over on the sideline, I spoke to
- 7:33Speaker 2: a couple of different folks about his injury. Everything that
- 7:35Speaker 2: I'm told is that it's a minor I was told
- 7:37Speaker 2: no imaging is necessary, but to expect the Saints to
- 7:41Speaker 2: play it safe with their top cornerback here and make
- 7:45Speaker 2: sure that he's not you know, rushing or or putting
- 7:47Speaker 2: himself in a position to worsen what is only a
- 7:50Speaker 2: minor injury. Right now, So, you know, it's always tricky,
- 7:53Speaker 2: right when you talk about a guy who's got an
- 7:54Speaker 2: injury and you say that it's a minor, but then
- 7:56Speaker 2: he ends up being kind of limited the next day
- 7:58Speaker 2: or maybe not even participating very much practice the next day.
- 8:01Speaker 2: It kind of makes you go like, oh, okay, so
- 8:03Speaker 2: what's really going on? But this is an early indication
- 8:06Speaker 2: that the Saints are going to do what it is
- 8:07Speaker 2: that they've continuously done and follow the rhythm of caution
- 8:11Speaker 2: that they've already kind of set as a precedent for
- 8:13Speaker 2: the way that they've been handling these injuries. So even
- 8:15Speaker 2: though it's a minor, don't be shocked if he's not
- 8:18Speaker 2: fully participating in tomorrow's practice.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It's early in camp. It's way more important to have
- 8:23Speaker 1: these guys ready to go later. Totally. I think everyone
- 8:26Speaker 1: understands and agrees on that. Okay, I saw from notes
- 8:31Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson got in the end zone today. What were
- 8:34Speaker 1: the other or who or what were the other standouts
- 8:36Speaker 1: of Day two?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely George Dyson would be one of them. Ended
- 8:40Speaker 2: up finding the end zone for the first time in camp,
- 8:42Speaker 2: and it was a team drill in the red zone.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That's the place where the Saints are really looking for
- 8:46Speaker 2: him to have an impact this year. They were last
- 8:48Speaker 2: in the NFL last year in red zone to touchdown percentage.
- 8:51Speaker 2: This is a guy that creates immediate separation and is
- 8:53Speaker 2: really off the line of scrimmage and is really really
- 8:55Speaker 2: good creating separation out of his break as well, both
- 8:58Speaker 2: of which very very important and when it comes to
- 9:01Speaker 2: making plays in the red zone, so he'll be a
- 9:03Speaker 2: good asset there. That's where he made his big play
- 9:06Speaker 2: here today. Quincy Riley also another standout, the cornerback opposite
- 9:10Speaker 2: kool Aid mcinstry going into his second year. He had
- 9:13Speaker 2: an interception today on a pass that was a bit
- 9:16Speaker 2: of a miscommunication not on the same page between Tyler
- 9:18Speaker 2: Shuck and Jordan Tyson. Jordan and Tyson cut inside, Tyler
- 9:22Speaker 2: Schuck through the ball outside and instead of the ball
- 9:24Speaker 2: just harmlessly bouncing to the ground, Quincy Riley dove and
- 9:28Speaker 2: made a play on it to go ahead and get
- 9:29Speaker 2: an interception there. And that was the first interception of camp.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And then i'd highlight the pass rush as well, Chase Young,
- 9:35Speaker 2: Fadil Diggs, Mike Heltman who came in or you've had
- 9:37Speaker 2: on your radio show. He was awesome coming out of
- 9:39Speaker 2: Chattanoogays at undrafted free agent. You know, Nathan Shephard, Kayden Ellis,
- 9:43Speaker 2: all these guys getting into the backfield, a lot of
- 9:45Speaker 2: them getting what, you know, the way that I would
- 9:48Speaker 2: call it, would be in position to get sacked considering
- 9:50Speaker 2: they're in a non contact situation. At one point, Chase
- 9:53Speaker 2: hung maybe a little bit over zealous, didn't want to
- 9:55Speaker 2: slow down too quickly, but ended up bumping into and
- 9:57Speaker 2: knocking down Tyler Chuck at one point. But all in
- 10:00Speaker 2: all in good fun and all of it. Tyler Shuff
- 10:02Speaker 2: got back up. He was all good. But the pass
- 10:04Speaker 2: rush really put on a show today as well.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Hey Chase, don't touch number six. Please don't touch number six.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He talked about it. So he talked about it after
- 10:13Speaker 2: after practice in the media availability, and he was like, yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 2: you know, sometimes you just get going and you don't
- 10:17Speaker 2: want to stop too fast, you know what I mean? Yeah, Okay,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I guess Hey.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Guy, you're enormous, don't you look like he man? Don't
- 10:25Speaker 1: touch number six? What's give us a heads up of
- 10:29Speaker 1: what's ahead?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so day three tomorrow, now that Chris Olave's extension
- 10:34Speaker 2: is done, you can expect him to get involved in
- 10:37Speaker 2: team drills. That was a big motivator here. Of course,
- 10:40Speaker 2: they had that hold in over the course of the
- 10:41Speaker 2: first two days. To make no mistake about it, Chris
- 10:43Speaker 2: Alave very involved watching from the sideline, was out there
- 10:47Speaker 2: for every minute of all of it. Now he gets
- 10:49Speaker 2: this opportunity to take the field and be out there again.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You know, if if Clay mcintry is being held back
- 10:55Speaker 2: at all in tomorrow's practice, which is certainly what I
- 10:57Speaker 2: would expect for what we've heard, that gives you an
- 10:59Speaker 2: opportunit you get a little bit of a look at
- 11:01Speaker 2: some of the cornerback depth with those veterans back here
- 11:03Speaker 2: in Iacadam, as well as Martin Eberson, who has been
- 11:05Speaker 2: really impressive so far this camp. So those will be
- 11:07Speaker 2: a couple of things to watch out for, as well
- 11:09Speaker 2: as the continued exploration of that rotation over on the
- 11:12Speaker 2: interior the defensive lock.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He's Ross Jackson at Ross Jackson Nola at Ross Jackson NOLA.
- 11:18Speaker 1: If you want to give him a follow, read him
- 11:20Speaker 1: over at Louisiana Sports dot Net. The Chris Lave story
- 11:22Speaker 1: is up in the practice note should be up here
- 11:24Speaker 1: momentarily for free over at Louisiana Sports on that you
- 11:27Speaker 1: can always listen or watch podcast YouTube blocked on Saints.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Thank you man, We appreciate it.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Thank you, Buddy back as you appreciate you take care
- 11:35Speaker 2: to say Talteason
