- 0:00Speaker 1: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein
- 0:05Speaker 1: are more than six score thousand persons that cannot discern
- 0:09Speaker 1: between their right hand and their left hand, and also
- 0:13Speaker 1: much cattle? Jonah 4.11 Lord, protect my heart from casting
- 0:22Speaker 1: judgment on others who may not be where I am
- 0:25Speaker 1: in life. Lead my thoughts and my heart in the
- 0:30Speaker 1: direction of your grace. When I feel angry and upset
- 0:36Speaker 1: because others seem to be receiving blessings and grace, even
- 0:39Speaker 1: though they may be living counterculture to your word, help
- 0:43Speaker 1: me to realize that even in our brokenness, you still
- 0:47Speaker 1: have a plan of redemption. As I listen to Jonah
- 0:53Speaker 1: expose his prideful heart, I have decided to continue to
- 0:57Speaker 1: live in humility. understanding that I am only one bad
- 1:02Speaker 1: decision away from needing the same grace that Nineveh received.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Because of this, I declare that I will not allow
- 1:11Speaker 1: the worm of sin and despair to eat away at
- 1:15Speaker 1: the shaded protection of God's grace for those who are
- 1:19Speaker 1: in need of it. Thank you for second chances, Lord.
- 1:26Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, Amen. Thank you for praying with me today.

- 1:47Speaker 2: Jonah and the Withered Tree In our last story, Jonah
- 1:52Speaker 2: was appointed to preach to the great and wicked city
- 1:56Speaker 2: of Nineveh. However, Jonah's hatred was deep. He would not
- 2:01Speaker 2: help the people of Nineveh. He wanted them to perish.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So Jonah ran from the will of God and boarded
- 2:08Speaker 2: a ship towards Tarshish. God sent a storm to catch
- 2:11Speaker 2: up to Jonah, and Jonah was taken by the sea.
- 2:15Speaker 2: In the deep, he was then swallowed up by a
- 2:17Speaker 2: large fish and remained in its belly for three days.
- 2:22Speaker 2: After crying out to God, Jonah was spat out onto shore.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Now Jonah reluctantly completes his mission to go and preach
- 2:30Speaker 2: repentance to Nineveh. Jonah expects them to continue in their
- 2:35Speaker 2: wicked ways, but instead comes face to face with true humility.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The wicked nation of Nineveh is about to display more
- 2:43Speaker 2: holiness than the prophet of God himself. Inspired by the
- 2:47Speaker 2: book of Jonah.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 3:18Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and

- 3:40Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our previous episode, we heard how
- 3:49Speaker 3: Jonah ran from God's call to preach repentance to Nineveh.
- 3:53Speaker 3: He first ran away from God, but then he ran
- 3:56Speaker 3: to God as God reached out and saved him. Though
- 3:59Speaker 3: Jonah's heart was not merciful toward the Ninevites, God's grace
- 4:03Speaker 3: to Jonah in the form of a fish who swallowed
- 4:06Speaker 3: him and kept him from drowning in the sea was
- 4:08Speaker 3: truly amazing and supernatural. Jonah cried out in praise and
- 4:14Speaker 3: adoration of God, acknowledging that salvation comes only from the Lord.
- 4:19Speaker 3: After three days, the fish vomited the prophet out safely
- 4:23Speaker 3: onto the land. Today, we'll discover how Nineveh responded to
- 4:27Speaker 3: God's word and see if Jonah's heart towards these wicked
- 4:30Speaker 3: people had indeed changed. Let's now hear this remarkable story.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Jonah lay on the beach, exhausted and unable to move.
- 4:42Speaker 2: He lay with his face towards the sun. He never
- 4:45Speaker 2: thought he would see it again. For three days he
- 4:48Speaker 2: was trapped in the belly of an underwater beast. His
- 4:51Speaker 2: garments still smelled of rotten fish, and his skin was
- 4:55Speaker 2: scarred from soaking in stomach acid. Although Jonah was thankful
- 5:00Speaker 2: to be alive, he was not excited for the journey ahead. There,
- 5:04Speaker 2: as Jonah lay on the sand, feeling the water caress
- 5:07Speaker 2: his bare feet, the Lord spoke to him again. Rise up, Jonah!
- 5:12Speaker 2: Go to Nineveh, the massive city inland, and tell them
- 5:16Speaker 2: that judgment is coming if they do not turn from
- 5:19Speaker 2: their wicked ways. Jonah was still filled with hatred for Nineveh,
- 5:24Speaker 2: but he would not run from the will of God again.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So he picked himself up and traveled towards Nineveh. He
- 5:31Speaker 2: traveled for three days, huffing and puffing his way to
- 5:35Speaker 2: the great city. Nineveh represented many great nations of Jonah's day.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It was hundreds of miles long and had massive towers
- 5:43Speaker 2: looming over the people below. Jonah entered the city's gates.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Walking the streets, he could see traders bartering in the alleys.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He saw soldiers roughing up thieves and women beckoning young
- 5:56Speaker 2: men into their brothels. Jonah hated them. He could not
- 6:00Speaker 2: fathom such a wicked and debased people turning from their ways.
- 6:05Speaker 2: They would always be the same. They would never change.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Jonah huffed his way through the city streets for an
- 6:12Speaker 2: entire day, making his way towards the main part of
- 6:15Speaker 2: the city. Jonah glared at everyone he saw. He would
- 6:20Speaker 2: make his message brief and then leave to watch the
- 6:22Speaker 2: city burn. Nineveh has forty days, and forty days only.
- 6:29Speaker 2: The city shall be overthrown, he yelled for all to hear.
- 6:34Speaker 2: He yelled it for word to spread, and spread it did.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Word immediately reached the king of Nineveh. What followed was
- 6:42Speaker 2: beyond Jonah's comprehension. Jonah watched as the entire city began
- 6:47Speaker 2: to weep. Those short words struck a collective chord in
- 6:51Speaker 2: the heart of Nineveh. It was almost as if the
- 6:54Speaker 2: words of God had been speaking to them for years,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and now all they needed was a little push. Jonah
- 7:00Speaker 2: was amazed as the culture of Nineveh switched in a
- 7:03Speaker 2: matter of hours. People began to worship God and cover
- 7:07Speaker 2: themselves in ash as a sign of mourning. People fasted
- 7:11Speaker 2: and prayed to the Lord for forgiveness. Brothers who fought
- 7:15Speaker 2: reconciled and passed wrongs were forgiven. The most powerful and
- 7:19Speaker 2: the poorest of the city were repenting, and Jonah could
- 7:23Speaker 2: hardly believe it. The king himself arose from his throne,
- 7:27Speaker 2: removed his robe, and clothed himself in sackcloth as a
- 7:31Speaker 2: sign of repentance. He stood in front of his city
- 7:34Speaker 2: and said, By my decree, let no man or animal
- 7:39Speaker 2: eat or drink during this time, and let us cry
- 7:42Speaker 2: out to the mighty God for forgiveness. Jonah watched among
- 7:47Speaker 2: the crowd as the king spoke. The once wicked tyrant
- 7:51Speaker 2: of Nineveh seemed to be broken and humble. He was
- 7:54Speaker 2: a new man, preaching to his people a message of
- 7:57Speaker 2: faith and humility. Let us all turn from violence and hatred.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Perhaps then God may relent and turn his anger away
- 8:05Speaker 2: from us. The king's words filled God with joy and gladness.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yet they filled Jonah with rage and displeasure. Jonah's blood
- 8:16Speaker 2: boiled and he set his gaze towards a hill overlooking
- 8:19Speaker 2: the city. He climbed in and sat on a rock
- 8:22Speaker 2: with his arms crossed. There he waited to see if
- 8:25Speaker 2: God would destroy the city.
- 8:28Speaker 3: He did not.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Jonah threw a stone towards the city in anger. He
- 8:32Speaker 2: beat his chest and looked up to God. Do you
- 8:35Speaker 2: know why I fled from you on that boat to Tarshish?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Jonah asked accusingly. Because I knew you are loving and
- 8:42Speaker 2: patient and willing to forgive, and I did not want
- 8:46Speaker 2: to see you spare such a wicked people. Jonah raged
- 8:50Speaker 2: in front of God. Is it right for you to
- 8:53Speaker 2: have this anger? God asked gently. A deep anger infected
- 8:58Speaker 2: Jonah's heart. He tired himself out yelling at God and
- 9:02Speaker 2: then fell beside a tree. He rested his back against
- 9:05Speaker 2: its trunk and looked up to see it produced wonderful
- 9:09Speaker 2: shade to escape the heat. The tree provided covering and
- 9:12Speaker 2: peace for Jonah's raging mind. He breathed in deeply and
- 9:16Speaker 2: closed his eyes. In that moment, he loved that tree
- 9:20Speaker 2: more than anything else on earth. He let his mind wander,
- 9:24Speaker 2: dreaming over simpler times. The tree enveloped him in shade.
- 9:29Speaker 2: shielding him from the scorching sun above. As Jonah rested
- 9:33Speaker 2: in its arms, he fell into a deep and peaceful sleep.
- 9:38Speaker 2: That night, the Lord appointed a little servant to visit
- 9:41Speaker 2: Jonah and the tree. A tiny worm was sent by
- 9:44Speaker 2: God to gnaw at the tree's roots underground. It infected
- 9:48Speaker 2: the tree and caused its leaves to wither and fall.
- 9:52Speaker 2: The once beautiful tree crumbled into itself while Jonah was asleep.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Morning came, and Jonah was awakened by a scorching east wind.
- 10:01Speaker 2: It blew hot air, churning up dust and leaves to
- 10:04Speaker 2: choke Jonah's breath. Jonah stumbled to his feet and looked
- 10:08Speaker 2: up at the tree. His beautiful safe haven was destroyed.
- 10:12Speaker 2: The sun beat down on Jonah's head and his neck
- 10:15Speaker 2: began to burn. The hot wind made his lips crack,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and the sun was growing more and more hot. Jonah
- 10:23Speaker 2: yelled to the sky and fell to his knees. He
- 10:26Speaker 2: beat his fists at the dusty earth and wept. It
- 10:29Speaker 2: would be better for me to just die, Jonah screamed.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The sun was still beating down on Jonah, and he
- 10:35Speaker 2: missed the tree's shade by the second. Are you justified
- 10:39Speaker 2: in your anger about the plant? God asked Jonah. Jonah
- 10:43Speaker 2: glared up at God. Yes, he screeched. Jonah's eyes were
- 10:48Speaker 2: deep red and his brow furrowed as he spoke. I
- 10:51Speaker 2: am angry enough to desire death. God replied to Jonah,
- 10:56Speaker 2: this time with more force behind his words. You pity
- 11:00Speaker 2: this plant for which you did not plant. You did
- 11:03Speaker 2: not help it grow. You did not water it or
- 11:05Speaker 2: care for it. Yet you loved it and wanted it
- 11:08Speaker 2: to live. Should I not care more for Nineveh? It
- 11:12Speaker 2: is not a plant, but a city with more than
- 11:14Speaker 2: 120,000 people who do not know what is right or wrong.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Shouldn't I care more for them than your precious tree?
- 11:26Speaker 3: In this incredible passage of Scripture, Jonah now is back
- 11:30Speaker 3: on dry land. After three days in the belly of
- 11:33Speaker 3: the great fish, Jonah was restored by God so that
- 11:36Speaker 3: he could accomplish the mission the Lord had given him.
- 11:39Speaker 3: But though he was grateful for the Lord's protection of him,
- 11:43Speaker 3: Jonah was still not ready to take a message of
- 11:45Speaker 3: repentance to the Ninevites. He could not understand or see
- 11:49Speaker 3: why God would want to rescue these terrible Gentile people,
- 11:52Speaker 3: these evil people, or how God could deliver salvation to
- 11:57Speaker 3: these people. Jonah was indeed a reluctant prophet. But finally,
- 12:02Speaker 3: he began his journey to Nineveh. It was not a
- 12:05Speaker 3: small village. It was a major metropolis for the time.
- 12:09Speaker 3: a huge city filled with many people. And the wickedness
- 12:12Speaker 3: was so great that one could only imagine it was
- 12:15Speaker 3: disgusting to Jonah as he walked from one side of
- 12:18Speaker 3: the city to the other, giving voice to God's warning.
- 12:22Speaker 3: You have 40 days, then Nineveh will fail. He said
- 12:26Speaker 3: it again and again. You have 40 days, then Nineveh
- 12:30Speaker 3: will fall. These were dangerous words for a Hebrew prophet
- 12:34Speaker 3: to shout out for all to hear in a very
- 12:36Speaker 3: pagan city. a city known for their evil against their enemies.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Jonah was sure his warnings would fall on deaf ears.
- 12:45Speaker 3: More than that, it seems like he was counting on
- 12:48Speaker 3: it and even wanted it. Unlike God, who desired true
- 12:53Speaker 3: repentance and revival among these people, Jonah wished only to
- 12:56Speaker 3: do his job, sit back and watch God destroy the city.
- 13:00Speaker 3: This is a good time for us to all reflect
- 13:02Speaker 3: upon our heart towards people that are far from God.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Do we have the heart of God? to share the
- 13:08Speaker 3: good news of salvation and repentance? Are we willing to
- 13:12Speaker 3: take the message of Jesus Christ to the world, even
- 13:15Speaker 3: though none of us deserve it? As Christians, may we
- 13:19Speaker 3: never be content to keep this good news to ourselves,
- 13:21Speaker 3: but may we always bring the message that God has
- 13:24Speaker 3: given us. God has called us to be ambassadors for Christ.
- 13:28Speaker 3: May we be faithful ambassadors for him. This was the
- 13:32Speaker 3: condition of Jonah's heart as he went through Nineveh, declaring
- 13:36Speaker 3: God's impending judgment But to his amazement, the Ninevites heard
- 13:41Speaker 3: the warning and they were convicted. And the king ordered
- 13:46Speaker 3: the people to fast and mourn. He then called all
- 13:49Speaker 3: the citizens to turn from evil and violence in hopes
- 13:52Speaker 3: that God would relent and not bring judgment to the city.
- 13:56Speaker 3: God saw the condition and contrition of the Ninevites. He
- 14:00Speaker 3: had mercy on them and spared the city from his wrath.
- 14:05Speaker 3: God did what he always does when people cry out
- 14:08Speaker 3: in repentance and faith. He has mercy and forgiveness available.
- 14:13Speaker 3: But Jonah didn't like it. He was bitter and angry.
- 14:17Speaker 3: He prayed to God, telling him that this was why
- 14:19Speaker 3: he didn't want to come in the first place. In
- 14:21Speaker 3: Jonah 4.2, we hear the words from this pouting prophet, Jonah.
- 14:26Speaker 3: For I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful,
- 14:30Speaker 3: slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relenting
- 14:33Speaker 3: from danger. Rather than praising God for his greatness and
- 14:37Speaker 3: his grace, Jonah spoke these words as an accusation. He
- 14:42Speaker 3: was angry. He was bitter. But he even went further.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Rather than rejoice in hearts changed by the power of
- 14:49Speaker 3: God and lives spared from destruction, Jonah asked God to
- 14:53Speaker 3: take his life rather than leave him to see what
- 14:56Speaker 3: was happening in Nineveh. It appears that too often we
- 15:00Speaker 3: want justice for others but mercy for ourselves. This is,
- 15:05Speaker 3: in essence, what Jonah wanted. He wanted God's mercy but
- 15:09Speaker 3: was unwilling to share God's forgiveness to others. We must
- 15:13Speaker 3: always make sure in our own lives who have received
- 15:15Speaker 3: God's grace and goodness that we are open to sharing
- 15:18Speaker 3: the gospel with anyone and everyone. There is no person
- 15:22Speaker 3: too far gone for God to save when that person
- 15:26Speaker 3: repents and receives the Lord Jesus Christ. God confronted Jonah
- 15:31Speaker 3: for his attitude. asking if he felt justified in his anger.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Jonah was too exhausted to respond or fight, and he
- 15:39Speaker 3: fell under a plant to rest. The plant's leaves gave
- 15:42Speaker 3: him shade from the brutal sun, and he slept. But
- 15:46Speaker 3: early in the morning hours, God sent a worm to
- 15:48Speaker 3: eat away at the plant, exposing Jonah to the sun
- 15:51Speaker 3: and wind that beat down upon him. Once again, Jonah
- 15:54Speaker 3: cried out to God, asking to die. God asked if
- 15:59Speaker 3: it was right for him to be angry, and Jonah said, yes.
- 16:02Speaker 3: He felt completely justified. And again, he pled to die.
- 16:07Speaker 3: But rather than give Jonah his wish, God mercifully, but firmly,
- 16:11Speaker 3: like a loving parent who corrects a spoiled child, used
- 16:15Speaker 3: this to show Jonah why he, the God that created
- 16:18Speaker 3: both the plant and every person living in Nineveh, cared
- 16:22Speaker 3: so much for the 120,000 souls who needed to be
- 16:25Speaker 3: turned to the Lord. Think about it. An entire city
- 16:29Speaker 3: of 120,000 people revived repentant and changed. At this point,
- 16:37Speaker 3: we don't hear Jonah's response or really know where he
- 16:40Speaker 3: went from there. This is no accident. God shows us
- 16:45Speaker 3: in Jonah that we are to care for those for
- 16:47Speaker 3: whom he cares, that we are to love the people
- 16:50Speaker 3: that he loves, that we should always pray, God, give
- 16:53Speaker 3: me a broken heart for broken people. If we are
- 16:56Speaker 3: to follow the heart of God and to share the
- 16:59Speaker 3: good news of Jesus Christ, his death and burial and resurrection,
- 17:03Speaker 3: We should have a great desire to see people saved.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Dear God, give us a heart like yours to love people.
- 17:11Speaker 3: May we be willing to extend your love and grace
- 17:14Speaker 3: to those who so desperately need you. We ask this
- 17:18Speaker 3: in Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's
