- 0:00What's up, everybody? You are looking live.
- 0:02This is another live edition of the Rick Mast Show.
- 0:05I'm Charlie Marlowe. That is the great Rick Mast.
- 0:09Rick, how are you doing, Sir? And let me tell you, man, what a
- 0:12week to do a show. There is so much NASCAR news
- 0:16going on these days. How you doing?
- 0:17Charlie, I'm doing well man. Got a little bit of the little
- 0:20bit of the croup, got a little cough going on.
- 0:22Other than that, pretty good with Honky talking over the
- 0:24weekend with my family and friends.
- 0:27That may have been what brought all the croup I've got here the
- 0:29call. I'm I'm not sure.
- 0:31But anyhow, here's here's here's the topic.
- 0:34Here's the topic, Charlie. This is a topic.
- 0:36It's called risk versus reward, right?
- 0:40And you know, I don't know that there's a professional sport
- 0:44that risk versus reward is as prominent as it is in NASCAR or
- 0:50auto racing in general, right? And we know from it as a driver,
- 0:54if you're driving the risk versus reward, we know what that
- 0:56means. You're you're running along
- 0:58there in the pack and you're thinking I can get in that hole
- 1:01right there like at Daytona or Talladega drafted.
- 1:04If I get in that hole, you know I'm going to be good.
- 1:06If I don't get it in the hole, man, I'm going to go back.
- 1:07I'm going back to the rear, right.
- 1:09But if I try to get in the hole and holes not open, you know, I
- 1:13take a chance on wrecking and hurting myself or getting
- 1:15carried out of the racetrack in a meat wagon, right?
- 1:18It's always been that way in, in different race tracks.
- 1:21As a driver, you're, you're always weighing that risk worth
- 1:24risk versus reward. OK.
- 1:27And the, the, the risk of these things is a driver can be
- 1:31catastrophic. And that that's, it's always
- 1:33been that way in our sport. Now we go to the cruise east
- 1:36side, right? Risk versus reward.
- 1:38Do I put 4 tires on and, and, and go back in the pack and try
- 1:43to get maybe there's 4 tires are outrun guys that put 2 tires,
- 1:47you know, you know, or if it doesn't work, then man, we're
- 1:50going to finish 20th, right? If it works, maybe, maybe we
- 1:52could win the race, right? You know, other professional
- 1:55sports, I guess what is it football would be for you go
- 1:58forward on 4th and 4th and one right.
- 2:01If you if you miss it, then another team gets the ball.
- 2:03Well, man, in racing, if you as a driver, if you, if you miss
- 2:07it, you know, you could get hurt, right?
- 2:08And that's what makes it exciting.
- 2:09One of the things that makes it exciting.
- 2:11But then a crew chief, you know, do a gamble on the fuel, do a
- 2:14risk, risk versus reward it. It's so many things, man in
- 2:18racing. And then, Charlie, we get to a
- 2:24weight deal a weight with my car.
- 2:26My car is going to weigh 34125 lbs.
- 2:30If I if if my driver's Alex Bowman, when it goes across the
- 2:34scales, start the race, it's going to weigh 3425 when the
- 2:41race is over, minus a half a percent and a half a percent was
- 2:45what, 17 lbs. OK, one since 34 lbs.
- 2:49Yeah. So these guys, and as we saw,
- 2:52they kept rolling across the scales, they filled it up with
- 2:55gas, they filled it up with water, they did all that, rolled
- 2:57it across the scales two or three times.
- 2:59It never made weight. All right.
- 3:01So obviously the thing was, was, was light, right?
- 3:05Now that brings in the question, what, how the hell did this
- 3:09happen? How did we do this?
- 3:11Is, is this a risk versus reward call from the crew chief or
- 3:16engineer or or whoever's in charge of this deal?
- 3:19It's just, it's unfathomable. But it's hard for me to believe,
- 3:22Charlie, that we, the crew chief did a risk versus reward thing
- 3:28on this weight. It's just hard for me to
- 3:30believe. It's hard for me to believe that
- 3:32this was purposely done because you've got to make the weight
- 3:36after the race. You know, as, as we know, NASCAR
- 3:39has gotten so gosh, how they're so black and white and so sticky
- 3:44on these rules anymore in the post race inspections that we
- 3:46everybody knows that you just don't do this.
- 3:49You don't, you don't come across the scales.
- 3:52Wait, I have to believe one of two things.
- 3:55I truly believe in my heart, one of two things.
- 3:57Something fell off the car or it was an honest mistake.
- 4:01If it fell off the car, though, here's the problem, Charlie.
- 4:04If it fell off the car, they would appeal.
- 4:08Hendrick would have appealed this decision because because
- 4:12they proved that something when he went over that big hump and
- 4:14went way up in there and come slamming down something broke or
- 4:17fell off the car. By them not appealing the
- 4:19decision, that tells me that, Yep, we knew it was light.
- 4:24We're the reason that it's light, OK?
- 4:27And there's nothing we can do about it because, you know, they
- 4:30defied it tooth and nail if they had any, any leg to stand on.
- 4:34So that begs the question again, is this a risk versus reward
- 4:38situation or that you guys, they just flat screwed up with a
- 4:42deal. OK.
- 4:43But then it brings into question, well, how did it make
- 4:46weight before the race, right? So, you know, there's questions
- 4:51here, Charlie, that I, you know, maybe we'll get to the bottom of
- 4:55it at some point. But the bottom line is, man,
- 4:58Alex Bowman got kicked out of the chase.
- 5:02I mean, you realize how big that is?
- 5:04That's a big deal. That's a black mark, dude.
- 5:06It's a black mark on on those guys.
- 5:09And they know that, right? And the ramifications for for
- 5:14this happening is, is, is just it's astronomical to the team
- 5:19and to the sponsors and everything they're trying to do.
- 5:23The good news and all this is, you know, Henrik, by not
- 5:26appealing, by not appealing, Hendrik Motorsports owned up to
- 5:30the fact that, you know, yeah, we screwed up, right?
- 5:34The, the, the, the reasons why that happened.
- 5:37We don't know what that is. But as a racer, as a racer, as a
- 5:41racer, man, and me and my mindset, I'm sitting here
- 5:45thinking risk versus reward on this.
- 5:47The risk is not worth the reward of having your car light when
- 5:53that race is over on purpose. That's, you know, that's my take
- 5:56on it right now. And that's the way it's going to
- 5:58stay until somebody changes my mind.
- 6:01OK, We're putting a lot of comments and questions across
- 6:03the ticker there. A lot of people weighing in.
- 6:06So obviously Alex Bowman, DQ, D Sunday night after the race
- 6:13yesterday it's announced that Hendrick Motorsports will not
- 6:16appeal and you heard everybody on Sunday discussing this.
- 6:20It was I believe is Brad Moran from NASCAR.
- 6:24He did a a quick little, little media availability and he let
- 6:29everybody know, and I think a lot of people knew this, but you
- 6:31have a .5% buffer essentially, which is 17 lbs.
- 6:37So you tell me, do most of these teams, do they try to keep it
- 6:41light enough so that it's Dang close to 17 lbs to get that
- 6:45advantage? And then I'm thinking, I mean,
- 6:49if it's over by a a pound or two even of the 17 lbs, right?
- 6:54It looks like they gave Hendrick every opportunity by running the
- 6:58water through, by running the fuel through multiple times,
- 7:02weighing it. I mean, do you think it was
- 7:04egregious? Was it, was it, was it not just
- 7:0717 lbs? Was it even more than that?
- 7:09You think that I got to this point where he's DQ?
- 7:12Oh yeah, it's definitely more than 17.
- 7:13You give 17. If they give me half a percent,
- 7:16I'm going to take sure .999 of that half percent.
- 7:19I'm going to be I'm my car is going to be 16 lbs light, OK.
- 7:24I mean, I'm going to have 1 LB over, but I'm going to be, I'm
- 7:27going to be dead on on it. And, and the way, the way these
- 7:31teams are now with the with the resources we have, you can get
- 7:34it within a pound. You can get it within 1/2 a
- 7:35pound probably, you know, or I know you can and you know, so
- 7:40they give you that. So you take it, you know, so if,
- 7:43if you're going to be over 1717, you know, man, you, you've made
- 7:48a mistake somehow, you've made a, you just, you've made a
- 7:50mistake somewhere. But yeah, all the teams are
- 7:53going to take, they're going to use every availability,
- 7:55everything they'll give them. Yes, Charlie.
- 7:57So OK so I need to ask ask this in a better way.
- 8:02OK. At at 18 lbs let's say it was 18
- 8:06lbs. Are they DQ ING him for 18?
- 8:08They they are OK. Because you're giving 17 to
- 8:11start with, you should be 3425, you know, but we're going to
- 8:16give you a half percent just for shits and giggles, right?
- 8:19And you know, so that's 17 lbs. And if you're 18, you're really
- 8:2218. You're not really 1 LB over or
- 8:25under. You're really 18 lbs under, you
- 8:27know, So yeah, they're, they're going to bust you at 18.
- 8:30So, you know, I don't know where it's at.
- 8:33I don't know what the, what the, what the pound each is.
- 8:36You know, if it's 1 LB, if it's, if it's 1 LB, yeah, 18 lbs.
- 8:40It's not, it's not 1 LB, it's 18 lbs.
- 8:43You can't, you know, you can't, you can't hardly.
- 8:45You can't hardly appeal that. So yeah, you have to answer your
- 8:47question, yeah. And and you said you don't, so
- 8:52you think there's any chance that this was done on purpose.
- 8:56And and I guess that that matters, but what do you think
- 9:00will be the ramifications of this?
- 9:01Is this such a big deal? Because clearly Alex Bowman, who
- 9:05is going to be in the round of eight now he's DQ D and look,
- 9:09there is a lot of talk about his seat before this, like there
- 9:12were some rumors he addressed them at NASCAR playoffs media
- 9:15day about about Kyle Busch. You got to think that at
- 9:18Hendrick of the four drivers, his seat is probably the hottest
- 9:23in terms of of performance wise. So in, in, in your opinion, any
- 9:28chances was on purpose and what do you think will be the
- 9:30ramifications? Does somebody get fired for
- 9:32this? What do you think?
- 9:33I don't know, I don't know, Charlie.
- 9:35That's why I went into the rant about risk versus reward.
- 9:38And I just, it's hard for me to, to, to, to, to say that the crew
- 9:43chief is going to risk versus reward 18 lbs on this deal and
- 9:50not make it into the chase. It's I, I, I have, I have big
- 9:56time trouble believing that that went on on purpose.
- 9:59I, I, I, I do, I mean, just because you're going to get
- 10:02weighed after the race, you know, I, I, you know, I just, I
- 10:06just don't, I, I just have trouble believing that not
- 10:08saying it didn't happen yet, could have happened.
- 10:10We'll go back to that risk versus reward again, but I just
- 10:13have trouble believing this was done on purpose you know Now to
- 10:17your point about Alex Bowman in my mind what this does it it it
- 10:23it gives Alex Bowman more security because Hendrick
- 10:27Motorsports let Alex Bowman down that you know this guy did what
- 10:33he had to do you know he got in it he got in this chase by
- 10:36winning you winning the race wherever that was at Rd. course
- 10:38or whatever it was and he did yeah he did his he drove his
- 10:43he's driven his ass off the last few weeks that car they've been
- 10:46running good the last few weeks he's had to withstand all these
- 10:50rumors about not being in the race car a little Hendrick and
- 10:52Gordon and everybody says that's all baloney.
- 10:54Well, if there was a little bit of something going on with that
- 10:58by Hendrick Motorsports, letting Alex Bowman down in this deal, I
- 11:03think solidifies this place in that in within that
- 11:06organization. You know, how are you going to
- 11:08now, you know, you've had a driver that get get get your car
- 11:12into the Chase, right, get you into the next round and you as a
- 11:16as a organization let him down. We can't go in, we can't go into
- 11:21the chase because we screwed up. You didn't screw up as a driver.
- 11:25We screwed up. We kept your name out of the
- 11:27chase. We kept your name out of the and
- 11:31all this stuff they got the TV deal going on in the backgrounds
- 11:33right now with these guys. All the stuff is happening, all
- 11:36the media, all the attention you're going to get for the next
- 11:39few weeks being in this deal, you know he's not in it anymore.
- 11:43Alex Bowman's name is not going to be in it.
- 11:44The only the only thing you're going to be talking about from
- 11:46the next three races, Alex Bowman was in the championship.
- 11:49If they they were caught, they were caught light, right?
- 11:53They got kicked out. So in my mind it it I mean,
- 11:58again, if you're Hendrick, how do you now, how do you let Alex
- 12:01Bowman go after this happened to him?
- 12:02I just don't, I didn't, I didn't believe that to be true to start
- 12:05with, you know, with all the rumors.
- 12:07And to me, this just solidifies his position within Motorsports.
- 12:11No, that's a good thing. I didn't think about it.
- 12:13No, it makes total sense. It would be really tough.
- 12:16First of all, I believe, and somebody can correct me, I
- 12:19believe he's under contract for at least another year.
- 12:22So that was part of this story. But it is interesting.
- 12:25How do you how do you get rid of a guy now who should have been
- 12:29in the final eight if it really wasn't his fault that that would
- 12:33be pretty dirty. Obviously, Alex Bowman didn't
- 12:36know what was going on with the weight of the car.
- 12:37I would think. I mean, there's no way.
- 12:40And neither did Rick Hendrick, Jeff Gordon, by the way, right?
- 12:42For all the fans out there, those guys, no, they wouldn't
- 12:46have known it if they'd have known that, they'd have made
- 12:47sure the thing was heavy enough. But no, no, they didn't.
- 12:50They before it even starts, well, it's already started, OK,
- 12:53on social media. But no, they didn't know.
- 12:56And my guy Brian Lacortic 9696, he says they failed Alex for
- 13:02sure. And I got to mention Brian here,
- 13:04he said he's from Perrysburg. OH, that's about 20 minutes, 25
- 13:07minutes where I'm from in Toledo.
- 13:09That's the home of Jim Leland, the the Hall of Fame manager Jim
- 13:13Leland. Just a little fun fact, he loves
- 13:15cigarettes, didn't he? Yes he does.
- 13:17Wearing spikes in the dugout, smoking cigarettes during the
- 13:20game. Love it.
- 13:21OK, so Rick, we'll, we'll change topics.
- 13:24There's there's honestly so much to talk about lot of drama.
- 13:27So we mentioned Alex Bowman, the DQ Hendrick does not appeal.
- 13:32Yesterday we have this AP story from Jenna Fryer.
- 13:35I'll read you the headline. NASCAR aware of allegations
- 13:39A-Team engineer stole intellectual property to give to
- 13:43a rival team. And in the article, it basically
- 13:47says the engineer is in a contract year with Joe Gibbs
- 13:50Racing, according to executives with six teams who spoke with
- 13:54the AP on condition of anonymity because the details are
- 13:57considered private and have not been disclosed publicly.
- 14:01Joe Gibbs Racing, which has two cars still competing for the Cup
- 14:04title, declined to comment. So we're talking about here
- 14:07proprietary information and you always hear stories from back in
- 14:12the day. I want to hear from you back in
- 14:13your day. Maybe there are some guys who
- 14:15are helping each other out, helping teams out with chassis
- 14:18setup and all that. But now this is a a billion
- 14:21dollar industry with NASCAR. These are teams that are worth
- 14:24multi $1,000,000. These charters are worth
- 14:26whatever it is, $40 million. This is a, this is a no no.
- 14:30So this is a pretty big deal when you're sharing info with
- 14:33another team, even if it's a team that's not in the the
- 14:36playoffs here. What do you think?
- 14:38Charlie yeah, if we go back, man, this is a big deal.
- 14:42But I mean, when I first read about it and I looked at him
- 14:46like, yeah, ain't no big deal. Hell, this stuff goes on all the
- 14:48time, right? And it did used to go on all the
- 14:50time, folks. This crap went on all the time.
- 14:53You would still, you'd still a crew member to get, you know, to
- 14:56get the information it this is always going on.
- 15:00But you know, in those days when it was going on, I mean, you
- 15:03just, you the, the guy would change teams.
- 15:06Or really I'm going to tell you something.
- 15:08A lot of what used to go on this kind of stuff, all these guys
- 15:11know each other. A lot of them are buddies.
- 15:13They go out partying. They'd be at the racetrack and
- 15:15they go out partying on Friday or Saturday night and everybody
- 15:18get to having a good time and drinking.
- 15:20And you know, it'd be a it would be a crew member or whoever with
- 15:24a team and that team is kicking butt and he'd maybe get a little
- 15:28bit degraded and he'd start running his mouth.
- 15:31He, he start talking. You know, he, he would give up.
- 15:34You know what, what his team was doing that stuff And and the
- 15:38other teams do this and other teams with all right, we can get
- 15:40something out of Mikey there, but we got to give him three
- 15:42shots of fireball and one and one Jack and coke and that then
- 15:46that's no more than that. We got to get the information
- 15:48right at that point, you know, and it was it was almost a
- 15:53science with these guys as far as getting information and guys
- 15:57would be buddies on pit Rd. and they would just talk and
- 16:00somebody be down in the dumps and need some help or something
- 16:03And somebody would, you know, back door give him a little
- 16:07piece of paper and had some information on it.
- 16:09I mean, I've seen this stuff, I've washed it up.
- 16:11I know about it, right. And but, but, but Charlie,
- 16:16everything you just said about where we're at with the sport
- 16:18right now, you know, we weren't these guys weren't under
- 16:22contract. They weren't under non
- 16:25disclosure contracts, you know, those types of things, I would
- 16:29assume. And in fact, I know I've heard a
- 16:32lot of these guys in that are with these teams are under
- 16:35contract. They can't talk about stuff
- 16:37right under for fear of under penalty of the law.
- 16:41Something, something, and I'll tell you something about Gibbs.
- 16:44It's, it's, it's remarkable or it's funny about Gibbs.
- 16:47This comes from Gibbs because I'm going to tell you something.
- 16:49They're probably I've always felt they're the most, how can I
- 16:54say this secret organization or or information kept within that
- 16:59organization that but, and I'm gonna tell you something.
- 17:01This starts this goes back when they started that team with
- 17:03Jimmy Makar. Everybody members Jimmy Makar.
- 17:06He was the first crew chief for Joe Gibbs back in the 90s.
- 17:10You know, he's buried the Patti Bay car.
- 17:11Patty's dead, did Jerk's daughter.
- 17:13But anyhow, Jimmy was very, very, he's a good guy, dear
- 17:17friend of mine. But you couldn't you couldn't
- 17:19get information out of that boy. If you hung anybody's toes, he
- 17:22wouldn't, you know, other guys you could be butting around with
- 17:25and you talk a little bit about chassis or car.
- 17:28Even after I retired, even after I was out of the sport and I
- 17:31would show up the racetrack and I'd go find Jimmy and his truck.
- 17:35And we sit there. I mean, I know two or three
- 17:37times we sit there for an hour longer at the OR longer at the
- 17:40back of the tow rig just talking, right, talking about
- 17:43stuff. I would bring up anything about
- 17:46the car downforce or anything. He he tight lipped, He wouldn't
- 17:50say a word. It was the damnedest thing.
- 17:51He was he was he was probably the most tight lipped guy in the
- 17:54sport that I ever met in my life in that philosophy.
- 17:57You know, he spread through Joe Joe Gibbs Racing, right?
- 18:00And they they're just, you know, you don't get information out of
- 18:03that group. And for this to happen to that
- 18:05group is like damn, of all groups for this to happen to him
- 18:09like man. So it it it you know, but but
- 18:13but but for somebody to do it for financial gains, never knew
- 18:19many people. I knew people do it.
- 18:21They would do it for career gain.
- 18:23You know, they would go to another team and let they and
- 18:26they share the information they had.
- 18:27But for somebody to just buy and pay for information from that
- 18:32team, that's not right, Charlie. That is what we call downright
- 18:38dirty, All right? It's just, that's just dirty ass
- 18:41politics in our sport that if you're doing it for monetary
- 18:45gain, no, you need to be kicked out of sport.
- 18:47You need to be whatever it is you do.
- 18:49Now, the other part of this is I see on social media people with
- 18:53the IT said NASCAR knows about it and aware of it.
- 18:55This ain't NASCAR's deal. Not you people raising the hell
- 18:58about NASCAR. They say this has nothing to do
- 19:00with NASCAR, right? Because there you get this gets
- 19:03into the you know, this is not a franchise type deal.
- 19:07These are independent contractors.
- 19:08What goes on between those teams has nothing to do with NASCAR.
- 19:11They they have no, they have no stance to rule on this.
- 19:15OK, so they just need to be left out of this conversation
- 19:18totally. It's funny because you brought
- 19:22up back in the day maybe getting the guy drunk, getting a couple
- 19:26shots and I want to read a couple paragraphs real quick
- 19:30from this article. So it says this is Jenna Fryer.
- 19:32AP The engineer had been exploring options with other
- 19:36teams as the season draws to a close, Multiple team officials
- 19:39told the AP on Sunday, confirming they discussed
- 19:42possible employment. So this guy obviously may be
- 19:45looking to get a job with a different team.
- 19:47NASCAR acknowledged to AP it has heard that one team with no cars
- 19:50in the playoffs paid the engineer cash in exchange for
- 19:54setup information. So there was money exchanged and
- 19:59as you were talking, I was kind of laughing because don't you
- 20:02think there's a difference? Like if if a couple guys are at
- 20:06a bar and they're like, yeah, we got Vegas coming up, What are
- 20:10you looking at setup wise? They start drinking.
- 20:12Yeah, do this, do that. Right.
- 20:14That's different. That's kind of the good old
- 20:17boys. That's what's always been done.
- 20:19Now, if you're downloading a data file and you're emailing it
- 20:23or passing it along and you're paying money, that feels
- 20:26dirtier. But it's kind of funny because
- 20:28it's like. This is always been done, but
- 20:31now you're getting money. And I'm sure it was done in a
- 20:33more technological way than just a couple guys at a bar.
- 20:37But at the core, it's kind of what NASCAR has always been
- 20:40about a little bit, right, as you said.
- 20:43Yeah, it is right. And it, I mean, you're exactly
- 20:45right, Charlie. I mean, I, I know you know, we
- 20:48get into again, it's like the antitrust thing.
- 20:50We're a few levels above Rick Mass right now on on all this
- 20:53stuff and what the ramifications are.
- 20:55But yeah, it's still the, you know, but you know, dude, if
- 20:58you're going to, if you're exploring your officers for next
- 21:00year to change and go to another team, that's fine.
- 21:02You do all that. You don't give up that other
- 21:04properties of what you're doing. You just don't do that.
- 21:07It's not, you know, you know, But yeah, to the core, it really
- 21:13is. It goes back to kind of what we
- 21:16always did, a little bit of what guys have always done, but just
- 21:19stop for financial gain. Then just that's the kicker for
- 21:23financial, for actual cash money.
- 21:24Nah, Nah. And I don't know why NASCAR even
- 21:28said, yeah, we know about it. I don't even know how they would
- 21:29even comment on it, you know, if it'd been made NASCAR.
- 21:32I said no, we don't know what you're talking about, right?
- 21:36So car guy here asked a good question.
- 21:38Would the Gibbs setup info work on a Ford and GM?
- 21:44So a Ford or a Chevy? Or would that be Toyota only you
- 21:47think? No, it would work.
- 21:48It would work across the board, you know, because you know,
- 21:51we're talking about the, the, the, the fascia, a little bit of
- 21:54the greenhouse difference in these cars, the body styles, the
- 21:57fascia and the tail tailpiece. But they're all, they're all
- 21:59regulated. They're all so close.
- 22:01Anything you do on one, anything you do on one is going to, it's
- 22:05going to work on the other ones. Now in the past probably it
- 22:07wouldn't be that way as much because aerodynamics, the
- 22:10downforce, the side forces, all the geometric forces of
- 22:14everything you're doing because you're a different manufacturer.
- 22:16Yeah, it might, maybe would, would would work.
- 22:19But no, that's a good question and it would work.
- 22:21It it, it'll cross pollinate across all the platform of all
- 22:24the the OEMs. OK, let's actually talk about the race for a
- 22:30second, which you did at the beginning.
- 22:31Somebody had a good comment here about Kyle Larson.
- 22:34Let me find it. David said, did Larson win on
- 22:38Sunday? I think that's David saying,
- 22:40hey, there's a lot of drama. Let's talk about the actual
- 22:42race. So Kyle Larson dominates and
- 22:46Rick Mass. This gets back to what I said at
- 22:48the last cut off race. Just the drama of the playoffs
- 22:53and seeing on the left side of the screen who's going to be in,
- 22:57who's out? And then look, even though Kyle
- 22:59Larson won easily, the drama of 2530 laps to go, being able to
- 23:05watch Tyler Reddick just chip away, chip away, and then
- 23:10finally get ahead points wise of Joey Logano, you think Joey
- 23:14Logano's out? Obviously that's changed now
- 23:16with the Alex Bowman DQ, which we already mentioned.
- 23:19But more on this race. I thought it was super exciting.
- 23:22Even though Kyle Larson won easily, watching Tyler Reddick
- 23:26that last 25 laps was captivating to me.
- 23:29Yeah. And it goes to the, the, the,
- 23:33the, the setup deal by the Chase.
- 23:35If we didn't have the Chase, God, that would have been a
- 23:38boring ass race. Because again, again, Kyle
- 23:41Larson whipped everybody's ass, right?
- 23:44And he's been doing it more frequently here, by the way, as
- 23:47of late. So, yeah, I mean, again, I
- 23:50caught myself doing the same thing.
- 23:51Charlie. I'm sitting there looking at the
- 23:53left side of the bottom of the screen.
- 23:54I'm looking at the cut off point, right?
- 23:56And you know, I was sitting there with a big time Chase
- 23:59Elliott fan watching this thing and that guy, you know, I, I
- 24:01didn't say anything, but I kept watching this guy kept his eye
- 24:04glued down there to the left part of that screen horror.
- 24:08Chase Elliott was in the in the standings the whole time, right.
- 24:11And every time, like one time he was, he was the 9 car.
- 24:14We're talking about him. I'm talking about him because
- 24:16I'm with my buddy that is an Elliott fan and I was just
- 24:19observing him and he would, you know, Chase would, would state
- 24:22was doing the deal to get his stage points right.
- 24:24And my buddy was like, well damn, he's not going to be able
- 24:26to win. We're doing this.
- 24:27I'm like, yeah, but they're getting stage points.
- 24:29Yeah, but he's not going to win. And then, you know, by doing it
- 24:33the way he did it, they didn't have really have a chance shot
- 24:36at women, but they were trying to make sure they had enough
- 24:38points. And then when he dropped back to
- 24:4020s, so he made that one pit stop on his way back in the 20s
- 24:43and he was like 3 points above the cut line.
- 24:45And my buddy's sitting there just, you know, coming, going to
- 24:48pieces because he's only three points above the cut line.
- 24:50And I'm explaining, Yeah. But as all this works out, he'll
- 24:52be good. And as it all ended up, it did
- 24:55work out. But my point being, you know, if
- 24:57you've got a driver and he's in that deal on that left side, if
- 25:00you've got, if one of your drivers is one of those eight
- 25:02down in there, you're watching all those guys, know what I
- 25:05mean? It makes it very exciting for
- 25:06the whole race. This guy, you know, if that if
- 25:08that hadn't been going off, that wasn't going on, my guy sitting
- 25:11here, he and I know my buddy, he would have been 3/4 drunk by
- 25:15halfway through the race because the race was born other than
- 25:18Kyle Lawrence. I mean, Kyle Larson, because he
- 25:20had, he's doing his thing. But by by having a chase and by
- 25:24having all that happening, yeah, it was a cool last race, man.
- 25:27It was just a good race all the way back through again.
- 25:30What was that a couple weeks ago?
- 25:32If we said we should throw Kyle Larson out of it, the rest of
- 25:35the race was real good, right? And that was.
- 25:37That Bristol. Yeah, I mean, it was Bristol.
- 25:39That's exactly where it was. Charlie.
- 25:41Bristol is a great race. Other than Kyle Larson, this was
- 25:43a great race. So yeah, this is a good case in
- 25:47point. And by having my buddy sitting
- 25:50there and me watching him, interacting with him, I'm like,
- 25:53OK, this Chase is a pretty cool deal.
- 25:55This is a pretty cool deal. OK, I want to find the the
- 26:00standings here, so give me one second.
- 26:02But as I was watching and obviously now Bowman is out and
- 26:07Logano's in who let's be real, Logano is even a a bigger name
- 26:12driver than Alex Bowman, even though Bowman's good.
- 26:15But I think when you get into the round of eight, and this is
- 26:18what we talked about a couple weeks ago, like OK, 16, get in.
- 26:22You can have a couple guys who can win a race in a in a flukish
- 26:26fashion. Not taking anything away from a
- 26:28Harrison Burton or some superspeedway guys that win a
- 26:31race. But I'm telling you, you go to
- 26:3316, you go to 12. You're still saying, OK, some of
- 26:35these guys that are in the top 12, not necessarily elite
- 26:40drivers, but man, look at this 8 Rick Mast, Kyle Larson,
- 26:45Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, Ryan Blaney,
- 26:49Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano.
- 26:52I mean, we're talking about, I think there's a good chance.
- 26:55Tell me if I'm wrong. I think all eight of those guys
- 26:58could be NASCAR Hall of Famers. I mean, I mean, that's, that's
- 27:03how good this final 8 is. It's crazy, the big names.
- 27:06It is. And it's funny, it's kind of
- 27:09like it's kind of like Speedway racing stricter plates.
- 27:11You get down to the, you see all these names all day long running
- 27:14up front and you get down to the end of the race and who do you
- 27:17see at the end of the race? A lot of times at
- 27:19superspeedways, those same, that same group of guys that that are
- 27:22so good at superspeedway racing. And it's kind of like what's
- 27:26happened now with the points deal.
- 27:27I mean, in basketball, they're called posers.
- 27:31You ever heard of the word poser, right?
- 27:33Yeah. These guys, we've gotten these
- 27:35top eight, man, they're not posers.
- 27:37I mean, they they should be there, you know what I mean?
- 27:40And any any one of those eight right now, I couldn't give you,
- 27:43you flip a nickel. I have no idea.
- 27:46Right when we get we get to the Final four, when we get 4 going
- 27:50to Homestead, I'll give you the prediction then who's going to
- 27:53win the championship. But to me, as I said before,
- 27:55Charlie, to me, the whole exciting part of this deal is
- 27:58getting down to the last four, getting the last four before we
- 28:01get to Homestead, over the time we get to Homestead.
- 28:04To me, that's more exciting than the actual Homestead race, but
- 28:08not Homestead. I'm sorry.
- 28:09Phoenix. Phoenix, I keep saying all good.
- 28:13When we get to Phoenix, to me it's a little bit anti climatic
- 28:16because to me the championship has been getting to Phoenix with
- 28:21a chance of winning, right? Because the day of Phoenix, it's
- 28:25whoever's got the best set up that day, you know, you got one
- 28:29race and whoever hits to set up the best is going to be.
- 28:32And it's the last couple years it's been, it's been Team
- 28:34Penske, right? And you know, so, but yeah, to
- 28:38your point, you couldn't have 8 better ones.
- 28:41I mean they set themselves up properly.
- 28:44And I, I think, I think with the, the format, a lot of
- 28:49drivers are saying, OK, it, it's not like back in the day in
- 28:53terms of winning a championship, but I, but I agree with you in
- 28:56terms of getting to now. Phoenix used to be Homestead.
- 29:00And I'm, I'm going to make a basketball analogy because you
- 29:03did. I'll, I'll go college
- 29:04basketball. You know, you have a national
- 29:06championship in college basketball, but there's a lot
- 29:09of, there's a lot of prestige of making a Final four in
- 29:13basketball. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:15Like when a coach retires, they'll say he had 700 wins.
- 29:18He had one national championship, whatever it is.
- 29:20He had five conference championships, but he had six
- 29:23Final Fours or he had eight final Fours.
- 29:25You know, I used to cover Tom Izzo.
- 29:26Tom Izzo for a while was Mr. Final Four.
- 29:30Like he only has one. I say only he only won one
- 29:32national championship back in 2000.
- 29:35But getting to a Final Four and going through two weekends of
- 29:39the NCAA tournament is very hard to do.
- 29:41And I'm thinking about it now in the NASCAR realm.
- 29:43I agree with you. Once you get to to Phoenix, I
- 29:47mean, look at Christopher Bell, he just he blew up one of those
- 29:50years last year, the year before.
- 29:52But getting to Phoenix is very, very impressive.
- 29:55So I feel like maybe we should, we should have that stat for
- 29:58NASCAR, the Final Four, you know, not just your
- 30:01championships, not just your. Braces.
- 30:02Won. How many Final Fours did you get
- 30:04to? Because that's pretty.
- 30:05That's pretty big, yeah. And and, and, and to your point,
- 30:08Charlie, the year my Virginia Cavaliers and Tony Bennett won
- 30:12the national championship, of course, you know, we're big time
- 30:14Virginia Cavalier basketball fans, right?
- 30:16And we followed those guys, man. We, we ate, you know, we every
- 30:21breath we took was all about getting there.
- 30:23And when they watching it on TV and doing all that when they got
- 30:26to the final four, it's like, my Lord.
- 30:29And even Tony Bennett as good a coach he is, and he's very
- 30:31humble guy by the way, and a good guy by the way.
- 30:36Even if he was like, I remember 1 quote was like to his team,
- 30:41guys just relish, relish what you've done.
- 30:44Relish where you're at. Relish you're in the you're in
- 30:48the final four, right? I remember he, he, you know, to
- 30:51what you were saying, he, he, you know, you're exactly right.
- 30:54Just soak it all in, you know, no matter what happens here when
- 30:58we leave this weekend, soak, soak in what we've done, man.
- 31:02Right. And then they went and won the
- 31:03thing. They won it all.
- 31:04So. But yeah, you're exactly right
- 31:06about that. Final four to me is the big
- 31:10deal. It's the big deal.
- 31:12How about some other news? This was yesterday and we've
- 31:16talked about Hayley Deegan before and this was this was
- 31:18basically common. You kind of knew this was going
- 31:20to happen. So for now, Hayley Deegan is
- 31:23leaving NASCAR. She's going to the Indy next
- 31:27series and she's racing next year.
- 31:30She did three years in trucks. She did 21/22/23.
- 31:36She did this past year, about half a year or so in Xfinity.
- 31:40Not great success. Hopefully she has more success
- 31:43in open wheel. You saw that with Danica
- 31:44Patrick. Danica Patrick had much more
- 31:46success in open wheel than she did in NASCAR.
- 31:51And also, I remember watching a couple years ago, Hayley Deegan.
- 31:55I know there's some people who think, oh, she can't drive and
- 31:56all that. She drove pretty well in that
- 31:58SRX series when she got an opportunity.
- 32:01It did seem like some of the boys were wrecking her a little
- 32:04bit the last couple years. So what do you think?
- 32:07You think she has a better chance in open wheel?
- 32:08I do. I say that because not a
- 32:13competition level, but it's something about I don't know.
- 32:17Let me just I I based it off Danica Patrick, OK, Danica did
- 32:22so well there. You know, she came here and she
- 32:24did well and not not, you know, she wasn't a winner, a perfect
- 32:27winner. And she went on down the road.
- 32:28But, you know, she Danica really made her name in the IndyCar
- 32:32world and brought it to the Cup side, the NASCAR world.
- 32:36Haley was trying to do it, the NASCAR side, you know, having
- 32:39trouble after trouble after trouble.
- 32:42If she can go to the IndyCar world and and make a name for
- 32:45herself, kind of like Danica did, man, I'm all for it.
- 32:49I'm all, you know, I'm 100% behind her on doing all that.
- 32:51It is. I mean, I've been 100% behind
- 32:53her trying to make it no matter what she does because, you know,
- 32:56cool story, cool girl, cool, cool person, you know, but
- 33:00here's the deal, Charlie. Here's the deal, man.
- 33:02If you're a race car driver, dude, and I've had a
- 33:04conversation with some with some dudes, right?
- 33:07You're like a, you're like a tree trunk, right?
- 33:10A tree with the branches. All right, listen to me.
- 33:12Follow me here a little bit. Dude, your tree trunk, you got
- 33:16these branches. You're the tree.
- 33:17You're the trunk. Well, the trunk is, you're a
- 33:19race car driver, right? The branches go off.
- 33:23I'm a race car driver that happens to be a woman.
- 33:26I'm a race car driver that happens to have been born into a
- 33:30rich family. I'm a race car driver that
- 33:32happens to be black or African American, right?
- 33:36I'm a race car driver. Whatever the core is, you're a
- 33:39race car driver. If you establish that and you do
- 33:42that properly, the branches, it's kind of what makes your is
- 33:47what makes your name, gosh famous, right?
- 33:52But you've got that you've got to be able to do the the central
- 33:55core part properly. And Danica was doing that in
- 33:59IndyCar when she came to NASCAR, you know, she was a woman that
- 34:06happened to be a race car driver, right?
- 34:08And it, I think from that standpoint, it, it, it, you
- 34:12know, it hurt her, right? It, it just, it didn't work, if
- 34:15that makes any sense to you. What I'm saying.
- 34:17You've got to be at the core race car driver 1st.
- 34:20And everything else happens with Haley digging, you know, they,
- 34:25you know, they, they promote her as a girl and a woman and her
- 34:28daddy and her all the sports and all the stuff that that family
- 34:32did and does right. And that that's kind of how they
- 34:34promote her. But you know, she has to be a
- 34:37core a race car driver first. If she could do that and maybe
- 34:41get back to that in the IndyCar world, then then, then she
- 34:45becomes a big Dave like Danica, right?
- 34:47And I'm, I'm hoping that's what happens to the girl.
- 34:49I really do. And you mentioned her dad, Brian
- 34:53Deegan, he was on Kenny conversation and he brought this
- 34:55up and he did it in a in a matter of fact way.
- 34:58He wasn't. I mean, he was complaining, but
- 35:00it wasn't like he was just bitching and whining to NASCAR.
- 35:05He was saying, look, I mean, he had seen so many people take out
- 35:09Haley on the track the last couple years.
- 35:11And this was this was earlier this year.
- 35:13So he was talking mostly about the Truck Series.
- 35:16And I do think this is where it's different going to IndyCar
- 35:20because of the nature of the car.
- 35:22Obviously in NASCAR you can do all that beating and banging and
- 35:26there are some dudes who are like, hey, I'm, I'm not going to
- 35:28lose to a woman no matter what, even if we're racing not just
- 35:31for 2nd place, first place, but for 17th place, right?
- 35:35I'm going to, I'm going to knock her out of the way.
- 35:37And I do think her advantage in IndyCar, probably similarly with
- 35:41Danica Patrick, she also brought this up is you can't do that
- 35:44beating and banging in IndyCar because you'll wreck everybody's
- 35:48car. So also, I think in terms of
- 35:50driving with respect, there's just more respectful driving in
- 35:53IndyCar, so maybe she has a better shot.
- 35:56Yeah, and I'll give you a favor with AJ Ford, quote, one time,
- 35:59years and years ago, we were somewhere together and AJ we
- 36:03were talking about, you know, he was talking about all the guys
- 36:06through the 60s or late 50s sixties, all his buddies that he
- 36:10watched get killed during the races.
- 36:12And you remember or you've heard about it anyhow, you know that I
- 36:15mean those guys, if they race, they were going to kill somebody
- 36:18that week. Somebody go get killed and lose
- 36:20open wheel cars. And as AJ talked about, he
- 36:22talked about he's he's heard divers talk about I'm not
- 36:25scared. I get the race car.
- 36:26And AJ says if he's if that guy says he's not scared getting in
- 36:30the race car, I don't want to be around him on the racetrack
- 36:32because he's going to die. You know, he said I have fear
- 36:34when I get the race car. He said, you know, I don't trust
- 36:38people like that. Well, his, his point was what
- 36:42what he was saying was he and Mario, some of the guys that
- 36:44came through that made it, they were better than exceptional
- 36:48race car drivers because you could not touch wheels.
- 36:52If you put your right front wheel against another guy's left
- 36:54rear, y'all are both going to go flipping out of the out of the
- 36:57stadium, right? And he's talked about so many of
- 36:59his buddies and people he saw die because car control wasn't
- 37:04there. And they would get into one
- 37:06another with these cars and you couldn't, you couldn't do that
- 37:09with those cars. Well, it's still true today with
- 37:12any cars. You just can't, you know, you
- 37:14can't touch wheel to wheel or you had no bumpers to touch,
- 37:17right? You got to learn, you learn how
- 37:19to drive without hitting anybody or rubbing anybody because
- 37:23you're going to wreck, right? And and and the good news is
- 37:26with any car today, they don't they don't kill him like they
- 37:28did the 60s, right? But you still you get yourself
- 37:31taken out of the race, right? And so, yeah, that that that
- 37:36that, you know, from that standpoint, from that standpoint
- 37:39alone, it's probably worth Diggins efforts to whatever
- 37:43she's had to go through to make this happen.
- 37:45Just from that standpoint. You know, if that's a problem,
- 37:48they feel like it's a problem. She feels like it's a problem.
- 37:50Her dad feels like it's a problem, then obviously it's a
- 37:52damn problem, Right. So what do you do?
- 37:55You you go to a series that, you know, you can't get away with
- 37:58that stuff and, you know, maybe, you know, it might, it might all
- 38:01click for it. Who knows?
- 38:02We'll see. It's funny too.
- 38:04We have a, we have a whole battle going on in the chat with
- 38:08people debating Kyle Larson. We have some Kyle Larson fans,
- 38:11some other people going after Kyle Larson.
- 38:13So that's all going on in the chat.
- 38:14People can people. Can get involved.
- 38:16How about any updates? Any new thoughts on the NASCAR
- 38:20lawsuit? So we we learned at the Kenny
- 38:25Wallace YouTube channel. So I think there was some some
- 38:28misunderstanding. So basically the injunction that
- 38:32Front row and 2311 Racing is trying to get, they actually
- 38:36want to be able to sign the charter agreement.
- 38:40But there was a waiver put in last minute that said if you
- 38:43sign the charter, you cannot sue NASCAR.
- 38:46So these teams actually want to sign the charter for 2025, but
- 38:52they want to be able to still challenge NASCAR legally for
- 38:56what they're saying is monopolistic practices on
- 38:59antitrust grounds. So I I think there was a little
- 39:01misunderstanding there. But any new thoughts on the on?
- 39:04The, no, the, the and that was in there.
- 39:06They brought that up. That was in the, the, the 6:00
- 39:10DocuSign 3 hours we got to sign this DocuSign that was in that
- 39:13document. At that point you signed this
- 39:15document, you got the charter, but you cannot sue us, right?
- 39:19And that was that was made pretty evident by 2311's
- 39:22attorney that that, that, that, that one sentence really, really
- 39:25messed them up. So basically, no, I don't have
- 39:28anything new. I know because, you know, I
- 39:31think we just have to watch this as it plays out.
- 39:34I mean, the the big hit we took the big hit last week, Charlie,
- 39:37that was all it was talked about.
- 39:38It was always brought up, you know, and all the pundits to
- 39:40everybody went on about it. But this week we had so much
- 39:43going on. You know, it really wasn't
- 39:45talking about that much. And I think what's going to
- 39:46happen, what we're going to see is as this plays out in court,
- 39:49every time we hit with it, when the judge here's it's going to
- 39:52be an onslaught right then Pockras and everybody else going
- 39:55to report on that. We're going to know what's
- 39:56happening. But you know, I just, you know,
- 39:59I just kind of feel like it's just something we're kind of on
- 40:02the we're kind of long for the ride on and it's above our level
- 40:05what's going to happen. So we hate that it's going on.
- 40:08But you know, the guys that what they're wanting, they want their
- 40:11cake eat it too. They didn't sign the charter.
- 40:13They want the injunction. So they can have the current
- 40:17charter, they can operate next year under the court charter
- 40:20while still suing NASCAR for a better charter agreement.
- 40:24I mean, that's what it boils down to.
- 40:25So, you know, and I'm sure probably the judge, I mean, I
- 40:29don't know, they might, the court might not.
- 40:31The court might come back, say no, you're not going to give it
- 40:34to you. I don't know.
- 40:35But if that's the case, 2311 said they would run without a
- 40:38charter. But I got an idea.
- 40:39They probably never thought they would actually have to run
- 40:42without a charter. I don't know.
- 40:43That part to me is what's intriguing about this.
- 40:46If the court would say no, we're not going to let you run next
- 40:49year on it with that charter unless you agree to all this,
- 40:52right? So we'll see how that happens,
- 40:54right? And they just see what happens.
- 40:56They just built this beautiful multi $1,000,000 brand new
- 41:00building. Also, the timeline you probably
- 41:02saw last week, the timeline was extended a bit because of the,
- 41:05the Hurricanes doing all the damage in North Carolina and
- 41:09down there in Daytona where NASCAR headquarters are.
- 41:11So they'll they'll have a little bit of an extended timeline.
- 41:14I do think, 'cause everybody likes the conspiracy theories.
- 41:17So, So when the lawsuit was filed, you wanted, OK, are they
- 41:22going to try to go ahead and try to maybe get something on a
- 41:25Tyler Reddick, get something on a Denny Hamlin?
- 41:28And and look what happened. I mean, Tyler Reddick runs down
- 41:31the field and Denny Hamlin, who obviously races for Joe Gibbs,
- 41:35but he's an owner of 2311. He gets in the playoffs and,
- 41:38and, and look who, look who gets knocked out of the playoffs, a
- 41:42Hendrick Motorsports driver, Alex Bowman, where everybody
- 41:46always thinks that Hendrick gets special treatment, right?
- 41:49Oh, Hendrick's in bed with NASCAR, They get all the special
- 41:51treatment. So it's just kind of funny
- 41:53because going in people wondered, oh, are they going to
- 41:55try to go after the 2311 guys? And it was a Hendrick driver
- 41:59kind of going the opposite of what the stereotype always is,
- 42:02that NASCAR goes out of their way to help.
- 42:04Way, way too much attention, Charlie.
- 42:07There's way too much attention in our sport now.
- 42:09You can't get away with this stuff, right?
- 42:11We've all heard the rumors and talked and talked about in the
- 42:14past with NASCAR and maybe fudge is something that's about
- 42:18letting somebody get some, getting something through
- 42:20inspection and whatnot. We've heard all heard those
- 42:22rumors. I never personally witnessed it.
- 42:24I never personally first hand heard from anyone that NASCAR
- 42:30purposely gave these guys a pass or let these guys do.
- 42:33I never, I never did that. But but at the day's in today's
- 42:37world with with the media, we have the scrutiny we have.
- 42:41No, they can't get away with it. You know, they it would equate
- 42:46worse if NASCAR was caught doing something like that.
- 42:49Dude, I mean, your integrity, everything about the sports gone
- 42:54if they, if they were actually proven to be able to, to
- 42:58actually do that as an organization, right?
- 43:02We lost our sport. Honestly, we've lost our sport
- 43:05because, you know, and NASCAR is the ruling body.
- 43:09They, they police the sport. That's what they do.
- 43:12They police it. They don't control everything
- 43:13about our sport with these race teams the way an NFL model does.
- 43:17They're there to believe, to police the sport.
- 43:20The biggest job they've got is to police this sport every week
- 43:24to keep a level and fair playing field.
- 43:27You know, if you do something like that, then that's in
- 43:30essence the core that goes against the core of what they're
- 43:33actually there for is to police everybody.
- 43:35And they just, you know, I read this stuff on social media, man,
- 43:39you just laugh. I mean, like, good God almighty,
- 43:41I remember, I remember when Earnhardt Junior was running
- 43:43there. I always talk about Earnhardt
- 43:45Junior. Well, if NASCAR was doing all
- 43:49these things that these people said they were doing, how many
- 43:52championships? Earnhardt Junior win, right?
- 43:55I mean, he would be a multi championship winner.
- 43:57It didn't happen. You're right, it doesn't happen.
- 44:00This stuff doesn't happen. It makes for good fodder for all
- 44:03of us. But no, no, it just it's not
- 44:06there. It's just not there.
- 44:08And then somebody does bring this up, which I think is
- 44:09interesting. This is DMH 1812, says they do.
- 44:14They didn't hit Byron, but they did Bubba.
- 44:16That was talking about the penalty the other day on the
- 44:19chicane where it did look similar and a lot of people were
- 44:22wondering why Bubba was penalized and Byron wasn't any.
- 44:27Any thoughts on? That no, I have done just a
- 44:29quick call just a quick call in a moment right.
- 44:33And if you back it up and slow it down enough, yeah, OK, we got
- 44:36it. You know, you, you made the
- 44:37right call there not going. All right, Rick Mast, what about
- 44:42we got story time? We got What's pissing off Rick
- 44:45Mast? I do want to hear about this
- 44:46honky tonk that people can go to your Twitter, your ex account
- 44:50and see you at the Honky tonk. So what else you got here as we
- 44:53wrap up the show, you know. I'll tell you what's weird about
- 44:55that. This place called Sidewinders
- 44:56and Roanoke, right? Big old honky Tonk.
- 44:58We went. I took my girls there for the
- 45:0021st birthday seven years ago or whatever it was.
- 45:03And we go in there and there's this guy sitting in there and
- 45:08they have all kinds of security and all these things going on
- 45:10and the place fills up and you got the band playing.
- 45:12You got two or three bars, right?
- 45:14Typical deal, typical honking talk, but I've never seen a guy
- 45:17sitting with security had a had a ball cap on.
- 45:19Older fella, right? That was a 7-8 years ago.
- 45:23We go back this weekend. We're going in there and we go
- 45:26in there about 8 O clock. The damn place is empty, right?
- 45:28I'm like, well damn. But I got a whole big group of
- 45:30people with us. So we we order something to eat.
- 45:32We're doing our thing and I noticed we got security
- 45:35everywhere. There's 4 Roanoke City policemen
- 45:37running around in here. There's at least three security
- 45:40guys that I could tell there's a couple more.
- 45:42We got people taking up the money and I look over there and
- 45:46there sets that guy with the ball cap on.
- 45:48I said that's the guy was here seven years ago anyhow about, I
- 45:53don't know, nine O clock people start filing in 93010.
- 45:57There's probably, I don't know, maybe 150 people in here at this
- 46:00point, right? And then I look and I'm, I'm
- 46:02sitting right there at the outside window and I can look on
- 46:05the street where they set up the metal detector outside and get
- 46:08these ropes lined up. Well, I see people lined up
- 46:11coming into this place tonight and they start piling in.
- 46:13I'm like 1030 cord 11. And all of a sudden you can't
- 46:17move in here. I'm like, and they're lined up
- 46:18for almost a block down the street.
- 46:21All of a sudden they open the door.
- 46:22Charlie, there's an upstairs to this place.
- 46:24It was added about 3 years ago. And you go upstairs, right?
- 46:27And they got the bars and it's a DJ and it's pretty elaborate up
- 46:31there. The light show and the smoke
- 46:32show and all the stuff goes on. But anyhow, here's my point.
- 46:36So I finally, I'll keep looking that guy at the ball cap.
- 46:38I walk over to him, introduce myself.
- 46:40Are you the owner? Yep, I said when you put the
- 46:43upper floor in, he said two or three years ago and I introduced
- 46:46myself. He says Rick Mash, You're Rick
- 46:48Mash. I said, yeah, this dude, come to
- 46:51find out this huge dude used to be in race and he worked for
- 46:54Larry Camp, which is a marketing company in NASCAR.
- 46:57He worked the Anheuser Busch account.
- 46:58He worked the gargoyle sunglasses account.
- 47:00He worked he works for stuff. And he he I went to his office
- 47:04and he showed me pictures and he had been with a billion, you
- 47:06know, with junior and a lot of stuff in his racing days.
- 47:09And I got to look at the pictures and I'm like, man,
- 47:12dude, I know you he's done changed.
- 47:14But I remember the pictures from those days.
- 47:16I go down to my basement in the been by trophy room.
- 47:18I got a picture of, I don't know, some award for being on a
- 47:21pole or something. There's that dude having me the
- 47:23award for the for the pole, but it it's just, and then we ended
- 47:27up doing a bunch of autographs and doing stuff with him.
- 47:29You know what I mean? But it's just funny.
- 47:31The NASCAR people, it's funny. 6° of separation of NASCAR is
- 47:35just ridiculous, man. It's just ridiculous.
- 47:38I mean, here's a guy in Roanoke, VA, who's a very successful
- 47:42ball. And by the way, Zac Top's going
- 47:44to be there for all you Zac Top fans.
- 47:45He's going to be there Thursday night.
- 47:46You can't get in. And this particular bar Charlie,
- 47:48what I like about he always gets these axe in here and he's got
- 47:52his walls are lined with the axe and they're, you know, a picture
- 47:55of him in the in the autographs, right?
- 47:57He gets all these acts that hit rape.
- 48:00They come into play for him. And then six months later they
- 48:03become famous. It's the damnedest thing.
- 48:06I can't even remember all the names.
- 48:07I mean, Scotty Mccreery, different people, people you
- 48:10seen on Idol and, and, and the voice and, and people that's
- 48:13made it now Morgan Wallen. I don't know a bunch of
- 48:16different people right to come through this, but it's kind of
- 48:18like like maybe 50s and 60s and Tootsies, you know, in, in in
- 48:25Nashville. But anyhow, that was my weekend.
- 48:27It was fun. Did get back, did get back
- 48:30before daylight? Not long before daylight, but we
- 48:33did back before daylight. Nice.
- 48:35Any anything ticking off Rick mass these.
- 48:37Days. Well, the same old thing.
- 48:38The same thing going on in the West with the western mountains
- 48:41of West of North Carolina, Tennessee.
- 48:45Holly, Charlie, we can do a whole store.
- 48:47We can do a whole deal on that thing, man, a whole day on it.
- 48:49But you know, you, you, you see these stories of people putting
- 48:53videos out about what's going on, how much FEMA is helping,
- 48:55how much FEMA is not helping. And all of a sudden I watch this
- 48:59and now it become political, right?
- 49:01If you're, if you're a Democrat, the government's doing all they
- 49:06should be doing. If you're not a Democrat, the
- 49:09government ain't doing crap, right?
- 49:11I'm like, people, just look at what?
- 49:15Look at the reports that are coming out.
- 49:17Pay attention to what they're telling you.
- 49:18You know, is it as bad as they're saying it is with the
- 49:22government not helping? No.
- 49:23Is it as good as other people say it is with FEMA?
- 49:26Hell no, it's not right. You keep saying all these
- 49:29reports, they they finally arrested some good old boy
- 49:33yesterday for threatening FEMA, FEMA official, right?
- 49:37And what I do, Charlie, on this whole deal is I go off of people
- 49:41that I know, people I know that are there, right?
- 49:45And I watched you watch these videos and you can tell some of
- 49:48the videos, right? People maybe embellishing the
- 49:50stories and all. But you could also tell when
- 49:52somebody's been sincere and what's going on in the people
- 49:55that I talked to. And there's, there's just
- 49:58complete devastation. I mean, dude, it's starting to
- 50:01get cold. It's 30.
- 50:02It was 34° here at my house tonight.
- 50:04And in the mountains, North Carolina is a lot colder than
- 50:06that or last night. And you know, we got people
- 50:10still stranded down there. We still got we still got
- 50:13problems. And it just that stuff that it's
- 50:16just pissed me off here in 2024, you know, here we are three
- 50:20weeks after event like this or whatever it's been now and we
- 50:23still got people that unaccounted for and and not
- 50:27tended to. It's bullshit, Charlie, you
- 50:29know, this bullshit as well as that.
- 50:31Everybody knows that's bullshit. Whose fault is and I don't give
- 50:34a damn whose fault is. I don't care.
- 50:35I could care less whose fault it is.
- 50:37Is it, is it Biden's and Harrison's?
- 50:39I don't know it. I don't care.
- 50:41Was it Bush's fault when Cortina hit New Orleans, you know, and
- 50:45they had trouble. I don't care, right?
- 50:48We've got a government, we've got a military.
- 50:49Get your butts off your butts or get your get off your asses in
- 50:54DC and get down or wherever you got to do it and send the
- 50:57military and send people in. Help these folks.
- 51:00Crap, man. It's not.
- 51:01This is not political. It's not rocket science.
- 51:03Help the people in need. That's what's pissing me off
- 51:06right now, Charlie. And it was it was cool, though,
- 51:10to see Greg Biffle on that race, the Charlotte Rowville and he
- 51:15was the starter and they gave him a nice standing ovation in
- 51:17the drivers meeting for, for everything that he's done.
- 51:20And I know we're going to get him on Kenny conversation again.
- 51:24And we were trying to do it last week.
- 51:25And, and he's doing more interviews, but a big, a big
- 51:29part of the interviews is honestly getting the word out to
- 51:32get people and other companies to help donate all these
- 51:37supplies and all that. So he's, he's still balls to the
- 51:40wall on that. That's just amazing to see.
- 51:42And it's, it is pretty cool. He deserves the Presidential
- 51:45Medal of Freedom. And I, I think it's, it's neat
- 51:48because Greg Biffle was a damn good NASCAR driver.
- 51:51But I think in the end, he's actually, and he'd probably be
- 51:55more proud of this. He's going to be remembered more
- 51:56for this and things like that than what was also a great
- 52:01racing career. It's funny, you know, I went out
- 52:04with Biffle was coming in. I don't think I ever had a
- 52:06conversation with him. And then when we did the NASCAR
- 52:10kick off alumni group deal at Darlington this year, you know,
- 52:13the NASCAR alumni group, the new deal they got going on that I'm
- 52:16a part of, and we did that at Darlington.
- 52:19Well, I spent some time with Greg there, me and I was 2-3
- 52:22drivers or the bus office. But anyhow, got to know Greg a
- 52:24little bit, right? It was almost like, not like
- 52:27kindred spirits, but it's like, OK, Biff was one of the dudes
- 52:31that Rick Bass would be big time buddies with had he come through
- 52:35the 90s racing with me or height, or if he's racing
- 52:38together, he's one of those guys.
- 52:40I'm like, all right, all right, I love the Biff.
- 52:42I love the Biff. So, so, so this deal that he's
- 52:46doing up there and again, what he did was was pretty good, but
- 52:49the the awareness that he brought Charlie, he brought the
- 52:51awareness to that thing, put all those things together in the
- 52:54beginning with helicopters and all that.
- 52:55That was that was a big time deal.
- 52:57But after meeting the Biff, I'm like OK, this is not surprising
- 53:01to me for him to pull this off. I'll tell you what, let's let's
- 53:05end on that note. This has been a hell of a show.
- 53:07Rick Mast in terms of our our live shows, Best live show by
- 53:11far. Tons to talk about.
- 53:13We had I think 500 people watching at one point.
- 53:16Look at this. Well, thank you folks.
- 53:18Yeah, in the last hour. And how about Kenny Wallace?
- 53:213800. How about Kenny Wallace and
- 53:23Dirty MO Media? What is it about all this man?
- 53:27Hey, folks, this thing's going big time, right?
- 53:29It's going big time. Kenny Wallace show, dirty Bo.
- 53:32That's right, Charlie, about your boy Charlie.
- 53:34He's got to be he's got to be working harder and doing more.
- 53:37So I'm I'm really excited to watch all this happen today.
- 53:40You know, for my little part on this deal, I really, really,
- 53:43really love watching you guys doing this thing and making it
- 53:46happen. It's it's so freaking cool,
- 53:48dude. Well, thank you.
- 53:49And you're and you're a big part of it.
- 53:50And I think there was also some confusion on what's what's
- 53:53happened there. So we're not we're not changing
- 53:55anything. We're going to still do all the
- 53:57content on YouTube and Rick masks still going to be here.
- 53:59And we're just adding a show basically, which they haven't
- 54:02named the show yet, but it's going to be Kenny Wallace, Ken
- 54:05Schrader. I guess the only difference is
- 54:07they're going to create a new podcast platform.
- 54:10So that show and the Kenny conversation, we have to
- 54:13determine which shows are going to be on which podcasts
- 54:17platform. So that's still all in the
- 54:18works. But nothing really is is
- 54:20changing. We're just going to do more and
- 54:22better stuff. And Rick's still here and I'm
- 54:25still here and we're adding Ken Schrader and we're linking up
- 54:28with the best company that does this dirty MO Media.
- 54:30So it's all good. Yeah, I'm.
- 54:32I'm excited. I'm excited for all this.
- 54:34I really am. Good, good.
- 54:35You know why, Charlie? Very simple, man.
- 54:39The coolest guys. You got the coolest guys.
- 54:42We got the coolest guys on this deal.
- 54:44You don't get any cooler than Schrader and Kenny and Rick
- 54:46Mass. You just don't get any cooler
