[rock music] Family Parts has arrived! [rock music] I don't know if that's louder with five people or only three.
• 0:18
[coughs] Hey, everybody. This is Full Spectrum Cycling, show 294, even though Tony wanted to push it forward a week. Sorry. Is that... What is UWMIT? UT. UW damn it. I know. I get it. It doesn't exist anymore, does it?
• 0:36
No, it's the new one. Oh, shit. [laughs] You kidding me? Another one? What are we at, like six in the last five years? Okay. Remember, I've only been to act two. [laughs] All right.
• 0:46
So here's the scoop today, ladies and gentlemen. We got Tony, we have Jessica, and we have Dan on that side. Over here, we got- I'm, I'm in bizarro world...
• 0:55
we got Sven and, and JK being with the head thing and the Dan what... Yeah, whatever. It's a show, folks. That's what we do here. That's what we do. Uh, I don't even know what's going on this week. We had an open house.
• 1:07
That's what happened last week. The concussive effect of it all. And Mama Tried rolled around. It sorta seems like it was, uh, like a wedding, 'cause it j- everything happened so fast. You had no idea- Well-...
• 1:21
what was going on and- I think it was smaller than usual, too. You think? I do. I thought the turnout was a little lower than usual. I, I'm sorta thinking that people just didn't wanna go look at our stuff.
• 1:31
They were everywhere [laughs] else. I was... I certainly had to tell the story of the hairdryers, like, 30 times. Well, the barker was out there, too, with his colored balloons. And the great giant colored balloons.
• 1:42
That, that would be, uh, that would be Ken Keene. Ah. Don't say it more than once, though. [laughs] Don't even. It's once. Don't even. And don't refer to the doll and/or the footwear- I, I'm gonna say this right now...
• 1:55
in, in indiscriminately. I'm gonna say this right now fast. Ah, no, no. Zero, zero, zero. Huh? Oh. 'Cause I would rather deal with that. [laughs] All right. Let's not be that way. Okay.
• 2:05
So, uh, I thought the show w- I, I thought the show, the open house went pretty well. There was...
• 2:11
I was mostly in the podcast area, and I think at least a half a dozen people were like, "Well, I'd sure like to do a podcast." Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. You guys, have you guys been on the show?
• 2:22
You were on the show a long time ago, weren't you? Mm-mm. Mm-mm. Hmm. Downstairs or downstairs. Yeah, we gotta figure out how to... Let's see. Where, which is- Was it on the first floor?
• 2:30
Or was that in the- Which one of those is you guys? It was the second. It was the second floor one, right? Yeah. Somewhere you guys are. Yeah, we went up, like, a... We went up, like, a safety stairwell.
• 2:38
A fire stairwell, yeah. It was yellow. Oh, yeah. And, um- Oh, God. The... Oh, yeah. That's when we were in the shit hole next door. By the, yeah, by the Fight Club. Yep. That's not a Fight Club. Right. Right.
• 2:48
[laughs] Uh, I'm gonna just do a little- It's a mafia Fight Club... I'm gonna push a button for a second... Fight Club Applebee's. [laughs] And I see all the Illinois plates from out there, so you know.
• 2:56
I'm doing the hijack upstairs. There we go. Uh, that should help a little bit with, uh...
• 3:02
'Cause, uh, two people on one microphone is weird, 'cause normally you're, like, right up on the microphone, like, to say, "Ladies and gentlemen, what's happening at the radio station?" But anyway, um, so yeah.
• 3:12
So, uh, there was a good half a dozen, and there was, uh, four ladies that had on, like, fur. Do you remember them?
• 3:19
They were, like, super stoked about doing some kinda show and- One of them got in the hairdryer and had a lot of problems with her hair when she got out. [laughs] Nobody got their hair caught? It was swirled.
• 3:29
Did they get their hair caught in it? No. Okay. It was not quite that bad. Okay. Well, that's good. Mm-hmm. So yeah, so that was our annual. Now back to its normal February, uh, time slot open house-y thing.
• 3:40
The collectibles... That used to be the collectibles zone that, uh- Was gone, yeah... that Renee took over, I believe. Yep. Renee Bubeau? I think she was down one. Well, she's on the third floor- Yeah...
• 3:52
where the collectible guy was. Is that okay? It's where he was, and it's like, I can't believe that that was- Did she relocate?... the same place, 'cause that place now looks- Renee is upstairs... awesome.
• 4:01
It, uh, whatever. They're still- It's like a little yoga- Anyway, yeah... they have two places now. Yoga, astrology.
• 4:06
Uh, what, so what happened was the collectibles guy made so much money on the interwebs that he bought his own building. Wow. Right? Doesn't surprise me. Well- He had, um, a really serious set of collectibles.
• 4:19
Yeah, he had cool stuff, but I, I mean- I mean, he had some... And it was floor to ceiling. Yeah. I mean, you had to walk in like, "Ah, ha-ha, uh, I don't wanna knock anything over." I know.
• 4:26
Were you guys, were you guys here last year for the open house when- Was it in the summer? It was, like, in September probably last- We came, I'm pretty sure, yeah. Was it really hot?
• 4:35
I feel like I just remember walking up the stairs in the, the building across from here and just sweating my ass off. Coulda been. Hmm. Yeah, it could... It, it's hot in February now.
• 4:44
It was, like, 55 degrees today in my backyard. If you, if you go back and think about this, it's been the weirdest, 'cause it's 55 today. Last week it was what? Zero. Mm. It's like double nickels.
• 4:54
Week, week prior was 50. [laughs] Stop it. Week prior to that you had to give me a ride home 'cause it was, like, 10 below. Yep. It's cold. Like, it has been the weirdest- Rollercoaster... month. Rollercoaster.
• 5:05
[coughs] Pardon me. Uh, so what do we have to talk about today? Uh, not factory open house. We covered that good enough already. Yeah, yeah. Let me see what's in the show notes here.
• 5:15
Do you guys watch, uh, any of the KEXP stuff? Oh, it's so good. There's- I don't even know what that means. KEXP is a radio station out in Portland or Seattle. Seattle.
• 5:24
That's where they do the live, live bands and stuff. Yeah. Yeah, and some of them are so freaking good. Oh, my God. Some of them are so good. In the shadow of the Space Needle. That's where it is. It is, yeah. Oh, yeah.
• 5:32
Live at KEXP. I w- I would go- Check it out... two that I watched recently were All Them Witches and, uh, Ki- Kiamos. I don't even know how to say that, but they were both really good. It's... They're, they...
• 5:45
I can't remember. I just saw one that was really good, too. It's not, um- The Love... the Lambrini Girls, which I've been really into lately, but it's something along that line. Definitely worth watching.
• 5:54
You guys should check it out. Yeah. I re- I remember watching them, yeah, like 10 years ago or so, but I still see them around. Well, I'm just...
• 6:00
So what got me to thinking about it and why I like it is I think WMSC oughta up their game on their, you know, their live stuff Instead of just doing the one Tuesday night during the podcast so we can't watch it Well, you know, just so it's on par with that production value.
• 6:16
I don't think that would be that hard for them. They got smart peoples over at WMSC. You, uh, probably heard, but they did make almost $60,000 from the, between the sponsors and the art for the art and music.
• 6:28
Well, they got some of my money. I'll tell you that. [laughs] And I got some of mine, too. I stopped in to get my, my stuff and talked to Crawford. Right on "The best year yet." I'm like, "Yeah, it was pretty good."
• 6:38
So, uh, Dan, how's it going, Dan? Dan and Jessica. We're talking Dan and Jessica. These guys are talking a lot. We're talking, whatever. Good, good. Yeah. Uh, Dan brought a bike in to do some upgrades, modifications to.
• 6:50
It's a Kona Sutra? Kona Sutra. Kona Sutra, and it is- 29er... originally a drop bar, bar end shifter, touring style bike kind of an idea, but we're gonna change it up a little bit.
• 7:03
What, what, what are the changes and what made you think like, "I don't need that setup anymore"? I don't know. Doing the, uh... I was able to, uh, uh, get a nice microshift, um,
• 7:15
dera- rear derailleur, so yeah, switching to a one bye. Never done that. Jess, Jess has been liking it. Um, not really doing too much touring right now, so I was like, "Well, triple, I don't really need that."
• 7:27
You know, the drivetrain has good amount of miles on it, so I was like, "All right, well, I can... Got this for, for a deal and, uh-" Is... Wait.
• 7:34
Is this the drivetrain you replaced after you thought it'd be a good idea to go cyclocrossing with it? [laughs] On a triple? Yeah. Yeah. Three by nine? Oh, no.
• 7:43
Which bike did you take on the, on the cyclocross where you destroyed your drivetrain? Oh. Was it- Oh, no. That was, uh- That was an urban- That was, that was Hodag... That was an urban jungle cross? Oh.
• 7:52
Or was it a- No, I've, I've only done- That was a Hodag one... I've only done urban jungle cross on a fixed gear, which is, which is way worse. Yeah. I'd ra- I'd rather ruin a drivetrain. It's the most terrible. Yeah.
• 8:01
It was like- [laughs] Especially, especially 'cause I run, like, 46, like- [laughs]... 15, you know? Something like that.
• 8:07
I'd rather- It was a country ramble where you should have that kind of bike ideally, but then it was rainy... It was rainy and sandy. Oh, that was up- And, uh- That was up north there, yeah. Yeah, yeah. The, um,
• 8:18
yeah, up in Rhinelander. Um, and that's when I realized that cyclocross or, or all that stuff is, uh, definitely a rich man's sport, so, uh- [laughs] It's an annuity for the bike shop. Yeah.
• 8:29
I was like, "All right, this was expensive." Um, but, uh- So we're gonna, we're gonna make it a flat bar thing, a little more of a townie bike, right? Kind of an idea? Yeah, flat bars, um, hydraulic brakes, um- Oh...
• 8:41
yeah, one by. So I mean it w- like... And the trails you can hit around here are so flat, you don't need triple gears. You know, I'm not- You-... out in the driftless area much... you need that 46 15s, which- Yeah, yeah.
• 8:53
[laughs] Yeah. So, uh, yeah, looking forward to that. I miss, I miss flat bars. Um, so that'll be nice. Jessica, are both of your bikes one bys? I forgot. We built- Yes... we built the Schlick and the, and the Crust.
• 9:06
They are. And they're both one bys, yeah? I mean, I know that was definitely, like, peak one bys being super trendy, and people are kind of going away from it, but it's like I kinda picked it out of laziness.
• 9:18
[laughs] It's like in my mind it's like- It's the most efficient way to do it... yeah, like one less thing to go wrong or whatever. Right?
• 9:22
I'm like, "I don't know what I'm doing to begin with, so [laughs] make it easy for me, please." Right on. Right on, right on. So yeah, uh, I think the, I think the Kona will, that'll be a good project. That'll be fun.
• 9:37
Yeah. Right on. Uh, okay, here's something that's interesting. You know how fat bike stuff, most people think of snow? Some people think of beaches. Yeah. There's an event out in Oregon. Oregon? Oregon. Oregon.
• 9:55
Oregon. Oregon. Oregon. Oregon. It's right on the beach. It's called Cannon Beach is the town, where the haystack is. I don't know if you've ever seen that thing. It's like this huge rock that looks like a haystack.
• 10:05
It's very popular and- Mm... lots of photos of it. Is that where Rogues- Is that where-... Rogue River... the Goonies? Uh, is that... It's in Bend, isn't it? I don't know. Mm. Look, there it is. Anyway. Yeah.
• 10:13
But anyway, so this is an event in May that's- Astoria... a beach event for fat bikes. It's a three-day festival in Cannon Beach if you wanna get yourself out there. Is it near Astoria? I don't know.
• 10:25
Well- I don't know either. [laughs] I mean, I've been to, I've been to the state several times. I just- I don't, I will never get the blue chip in- I do not know proximity-... trivia person for geography, never...
• 10:33
of, of things there except that the coast is where you wanna be for the most part. Yeah, it's all, like, inland, too. Aren't all the cities inland and there's, like, nothing on the coast there?
• 10:43
Yeah, for the most- Is that what it is?... part, especially once you get past, like, the toppy-ish part, there's a lot of coast that has, like, very little stuff going on. Gotcha.
• 10:52
It's super sweet, like Coos Bay and Cannon Beach, for instance. [laughs] I think there's definitely a link in the show notes if you wanna check that out. It's, uh, it's... Well, I don't... Whatever.
• 11:03
There, there is no- I see that. It's just a, just a note. You could probably Google it and say- I'll, I'll, I have a, I have a fancy graphic- [laughs]... and I have also a link for that.
• 11:12
It happens to be in between the Midway Bar and Grill in Mineral Point and also the Walker House, which is a haunted hotel in Mineral Point, which I met Chewie there to hand off his Wednesday a couple weeks ago.
• 11:24
Apparently, the hotel is very famous for being a haunted hotel. Hm. He's into ghost hunting now for some reason. [laughs] Are you guys into ghost hunting? What, I mean, what's going on with ghost hunting?
• 11:34
It seems to be, like, all the rage these days. I got, I have ghosts in my house, so I don't need to go hunting for them. [laughs] So I'm, I'm fine. [laughs] We just coexist. Well is well. You could rent a space.
• 11:46
I watch it on TV. Rent the ghost space? In here and make a little, like, ghost hunting room. Seance, seance room. [ghost noises] Just- I, I kinda feel like Rene does some sort of seance-y stuff... a Geiger.
• 11:58
Is it a Geiger meter or what's it called? Yeah, you know? Yeah. I don't think ghosts are radioactive, but it would be similar. You, the ectoplasm- Have you ever met a ghost? You don't know. I...
• 12:07
Well, I- I ain't afraid of no ghost. [laughs] It's just too easy, the slow setup So- Had to knock that one out while I'm on this one... I don't, Mineral Point, I...
• 12:17
So it's kind of off the beaten path, and y- I think we used to have to go through Mineral Point to get to Decorah, but now they have kind of a straight shot right through there, and you kind of miss it by a few miles.
• 12:29
But it's a really cool town. It's sort of a Airbnb art place thing- So- south of Dodgeville? Which- Hmm... this is what we came up with, is Governor Dodge is right there in Dodgeville. Yes. Governor Dodge State Park.
• 12:45
And, uh, Chewy suggested we get together at Dodgeville and ride to Mineral Point, and then if we drink too much at the Mineral Point, [laughs] what's it, what was it called? Midway Bar and Grill,
• 12:57
uh, we can stay in, in, uh, Mineral Point. At the haunted hotel? Maybe. Uh, but also a buddy of, uh, Lun's and mine, Sean, owns a restaurant there- Mm-hmm...
• 13:08
that's very well received, plus Atomic Chocolate, which unfortunately was closed when I went there, but was really looking forward to chocolate. The, uh, Hook's Cheese is there, too. Is it? Yeah. Okay. Oh.
• 13:18
So there's a lot of stuff there. Now you got me. Yeah. Now I'm ready. It's also quite hilly there. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. We took the Cheese Country Trail on our bike tour a few years ago.
• 13:27
We came up the Cheese Country Trail, and then it went to, uh, it went through Mineral, Mineral Point, and we spent the night at Dodge. But, uh, yeah, it was hilly. It was a little hilly there. Um, seemed pretty cool.
• 13:38
I mean, we were kind of booking it for... I was hungry for barbecue, so we stopped at- [laughs]... Bob, Bob's Bitchin' Barbecue in Dodgeville, but, uh- Bob's Bitchin' Barbecue... but, uh, yeah.
• 13:47
Uh, Hook's Cheese was in there, um, in Mineral Point. But, uh, yeah, it's, it's easy to bike around there, though. The, the path was fine and all that.
• 13:56
I didn't realize it was hilly until we had just ate barbecue and then had to carry firewood back to the house. [laughs] So that's when you notice it's hilly. [laughs] Absolutely.
• 14:07
Are you guys like, uh, do you guys like watching road races, like bicycle road racing? The Tour of America's Dairyland, you know, kind of thing that happens? TOAD? TOAD. TOAD. I- TOAD...
• 14:18
I miss, uh- Capital T, capital O, small A, capital D... I've watched the one in, uh, Brewers Hill when I lived there. That was a good course. That was a good course. It's a- I liked that one...
• 14:26
good course, minus the, uh, actual, uh, tarmac. The, uh, the road was, uh, potholey. Oh, yeah. That's part of racing, man. Yeah, it is part of racing, I guess.
• 14:35
Well, it's coming up, uh, in June 19th to the 29th, so if you're happening to be in Milwaukee around that time, that's when that's coming up. Is that what we watched from Finks, too? Oh, when they did the Brady- Yeah...
• 14:48
the Brady movie? Oh, that was a nutty turn right there in front of Brady's. Yeah. Oh, the Brady experiment. I was like, I'm like- That's right... "Oh, man, that's gonna be crash's corner."
• 14:54
It was just fun, 'cause we watched it from Finks. Mm-hmm. So I had a fancy cocktail in, like, a cute little coupe glass. [laughs] And, like, I set it down at one point just on, like, the curb to watch the race.
• 15:04
[laughs] So just, like, the s- like, just the balance of, like, your fancy, like, cocktail on the ground while you're watching the bike race in the street, you know, whatever. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that was...
• 15:14
That, because that's a very congested area there. Mm-hmm. And there are not many ways to get through that part of town. When something like a bike race [laughs] is going on, it's like, "How do I get from meow to nyaa?
• 15:26
Well, I just go through the barricades and that's the way I go." [laughs] I just, I don't know. Well, even, I mean, just the route for riding, it was like, oh man, you're coming in hot from Pulaski- Oh...
• 15:36
and hooking that turn, and a lot of them were just going brrap right on through, and you know they're gonna be just knocking into that. Hmm. Yeah.
• 15:44
I don't think they're gonna do that course again- It doesn't seem like they're going to... probably. [laughs] Well, that just is... That's like, well, the Tosa one for the kids, when the kids come down the hill, [laughs]
• 15:55
they just get the wobbles, and it's like ooh. And either they'll eat it beforehand or they'll just pop right into the, uh, barricade. Yeah, I, I think that's a good one, too- I mean, it-...
• 16:06
'cause there's a, there's a decent hill right there... no, everyone was fine. Nobody got really, really hurt. It's not Snake Alley- By any stretch... I'll tell you, but it's still a hill, so. Yeah, yeah.
• 16:14
I just was surprised that they went all... They were riding the whole course. I thought they were just gonna do, like, a straightaway, "Hey, it's a kids race. Do the straightaway." Good job.
• 16:22
Get to one end, and maybe- I remember-... go back the other way. I was like, "Holy shit, they're coming down the hill."
• 16:27
[laughs] Was, was it during one of the TOAD races when we were there with the 36-inch bike and the 20-inch bike, or was that a Steel Is Real or something? That was a Steel Is Real thing. Yeah. But- I had so much fun...
• 16:35
it was down the road from- Excuse me... but it was basically the same part of the course. Excuse me. Yeah. My bike had 16-inch wheels that year. Okay. Mm-hmm. All right, 16-inch guy.
• 16:44
Speaking of 16 inches, how many studs you got on your shoe? Three. [laughs] Tell us about your, uh, th- so we've talked about these Invrs pedals, I-N-V-R-S, or some s- fancy spelling of how you spell inverse.
• 16:58
I don't have them on these shoes. Um- Uh, but you've, you, you think they're pretty slick. I- Not slick... for a stud. Not slick. Not slick. Correct. As a matter of fact. You are correct, ma'am. Sorry. Very, very true.
• 17:09
I, it's, it's weird. Um, y- You're weird... you can't... Well, I know that, but- Your, your mom's weird. You're weird... uh, my mom's dead, so I don't think she's weird anymore. [laughs] Um- All right, my mom's weird...
• 17:22
when you have your foot on the pedal with even three studs, and you try to push your foot off the front of that pedal, it will not happen. You can push as hard as you freaking want, and that pedal and that, they are one.
• 17:37
And then you look down at your foot and you're like, "How's that working?" [laughs] 'Cause you can lift your foot up. You can turn your feet. As soon as you push forward or backward, it's stuck. So you think my- Yeah.
• 17:48
I like them... so you think I've got overkill with how many- I think you-... studs I put [laughs] on my boots? I think you have got a combination of studs to hold the pedal in place and studs to potentially kill a human.
• 17:59
And, well, also not fall my ass down on a frozen lake or something like that. I don't think I will either, but yeah, no, you're pretty safe. I think you've... You're like an accountant, man.
• 18:06
You're wearing suspenders and a belt. [laughs] Wow, I never heard an accountant described that way. That's pretty good. Oh, really? [laughs] I, I was an accounting major. [laughs] That's what they called all of us.
• 18:15
Oh, okay. Obviously not an accountant. Well, not right now anyway. Right[laughs] You know what the hell I- I was gonna just go with- I don't know what the hell I was thinking there...
• 18:24
I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Where's, where- I was gonna go like White Bell- Where's the thing? Yeah... white belt and white shoes. You got the full Cleveland. [bell ringing] Speaking of White Bell-
• 18:33
Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. JK, uh, picked up today's beer- Stone... whilst, whilst maneuvering the vehicles for a new parking spot at the- Yes... old, uh, UWM. Exactly. You gotta do that every two hours?
• 18:46
Yeah, no, it depends on every- Yeah, depending on where you're landing... you know, two and a half hours. Yeah... so is that built into your contract? I get 10 minutes to go move my car? No. Fuck no.
• 18:53
Something of that nature. My... No, I... Don't talk to me about people not working, okay? I work for the state. You're- [sighs] But you ride your bike. I know. There you go. I also work.
• 19:03
So today's beer- I might go out on my coworker. You're just not gonna work... cur- courtesy of JK is... Stone IPA. Ran across a article about this guy just going- I mean, San Diego, isn't it? I don't know.
• 19:16
Pretty sure it's from San Diego. He- what did he say? He drinks thousands of IPAs? We read the same article. I know. Well, that was just weird. And I skimmed it 'cause I'm like, "All right, what's his favorite?
• 19:24
What's his favorite?" And then he says Stone. This exact one? Or- Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, it was a- Well have it. Have one then... it was like- Have one then when you finish that one. I, I will- Yeah, yeah, yeah...
• 19:33
I will say that it's good. Yeah. I would not say it's my favorite. Well, it's been around since 1876 or something, or 197- whatever. It's been around for a while. It's one of the- 1987.
• 19:43
Well, you're only 100 years difference there, so it's- I don't care. It's just- They're an underwriter for some, like, PBS show. I see 'em, like- Yeah, they kinda- Yeah, okay. I give them a credit for it... uh, yeah...
• 19:51
but they're, but it's not like- But they were here, like, at that kind of that beginning wave of craft beer- The first wave of, uh, Sierra Nevada and stuff... yeah, Sierra Nevada- Yes... uh, Anchor Steam and- And yeah...
• 20:01
the little, uh- Anchor Steam Bump But the guy's like, "Oh, hey, if it's, you know..." It's like, no, if I c- if I see it on the shelf or if I see it on a, you know, at a bar or whatever, it's a go-to.
• 20:12
And he, he referred to it as cheap or like- It's not that inexpensive It's not that damn in- Is it? No. What is it? It's like 10 bucks for a six-pack. Yeah, yeah. It's in the same- Six-...
• 20:21
6.9 on the Alcahoosian scale too... I'd say it's, it's up there. It's up there It's got a little bit of- Is it like the rest of the world's Lakefront IPA? Uh- That good way to look at it. I think this is...
• 20:31
I actually, we have an IPA... Oh, I'll be right back. Whoa. Boy. Bye. What are you doing? Bye. There's an IPA. Oh, there- No, there is Lakefront IPA right- There's one right here...
• 20:40
no, there's Lakefront IPA, I think, in the fridge from the- I thought he was gonna poop or something. I think he, he went away so quickly. I'm in my office. I thought he was pooping. It's 6:30 on a Thursday night.
• 20:50
You're drinking while on the- Tuesday. Thursday... Thursday. That's what I was gonna say. I was like- It's, it's Thursday right now. And I don't mean that as a, like a discredit to Lakefront IPA.
• 20:56
That is one of my favorites. [laughs] No, I'm... I agree. And I think compared to this, I would also rather have a Lakefront IPA. Okay. It would be- It's good... it would be- For some reason-...
• 21:06
it would be in the Chili Rabbit Oh, okay... ramped up. See, the, the rabbit- Similar... I don't know what it is with the rabbits- Oh... but they do not sit well on my tummy. Oh Oh, and they get me drunk as hell. Yeah.
• 21:15
And they have two new ones out, ice chili and then another one. There was- Like, it's like imp- royal or- Royal? It's an imperial, I think, so that one will get you drunk. Oh, yeah. Yes. Oh, I don't need that.
• 21:25
I mean, Chili Rabbit is nudging it a little higher than it needs to be- Yeah... but this is probably as close to Chili Rabbit. That's still- I feel like all-... almost not... It, it's smooth drinking and it might- Yeah.
• 21:36
Well, and I think that was his point... it might sneak up on you a little bit. Where it was like, "Oh, yeah, hey, if it's there I'll get it and I'll enjoy it." And it's been steady since '97, so there you go.
• 21:48
Guess what's coming, guess what's coming Thursday? Today. Today? Today, Thursday. Another Omnium. Really? Yeah. I got a- Analog or-... an acoustic, an analog, uh, Omnium because I want...
• 22:02
That thing's in the other room, very expensive, and I would- Oh, you wanna put your own drive on it... I kinda wanna sell that one and get some moolah.
• 22:10
Uh, so I have a small Omnium Black Awesomeness that if you look at how it's set up, it's got cameras and whatnot on it to be like a mobile podcast recording rig. But yes, as much as I love the Shimano
• 22:27
belt drive five-speed Awesomeness, kinda want something go a little bit faster. [laughs] S- It- Well, it tops out at 20. So it has a conventional bottom bracket? It does. I've been noticing there's some cheap
• 22:42
electric bikes, rear hub electric bikes, that have a bottom bracket that's clearly intended to upgrade to a mid-drive. With also an electric rear hub? Well, I think- Wouldn't that be weird?
• 22:54
Uh, well, then we should talk about this weird video that I, this... What is this thing called? The Bimodal? The Mis- That- The Bimodal... that's been around for a while. Yeah. It's been a s- been around for a few years,
• 23:07
and somehow it uses the disc brake or something. It's got a r- it's got... It, it mounts onto the disc brake- Right... but there you replace your disc brake with a disc brake that has a cog- Right... mounted to it.
• 23:24
Okay. Yeah. It looks r- yeah. It... But- That was an odd look... the, the review I watched yesterday, the guy did two things. He put it on his regular full squishy mountain bike- Right... and rode it- Right on...
• 23:36
and said, "You know, it's, it's apparently considerably less weight than a standard e-bike." Then he went full on nuts and he put it on the front wheel of a mid-drive. [laughs] Oh. And the demo he did was in deep snow,
• 23:55
and he said, "You know, normally when you would wash out, you just lightly tap the throttle and that front wheel straightens you immediately back up." Huh.
• 24:04
He said, "I am riding through stuff I would never, ever ride through." That is, that's an interesting way to look at how to use this.
• 24:10
You know, and he had a justification of the $2,000 price tag, which I find really hard to swallow. I... That seems a little spendy. It seems really spendy, but if you are [laughs]...
• 24:18
And, and this guy had a lot of really good... If you're a van life person- I have a van and I have a life- And, and-... so that would make me a van life person, I guess...
• 24:26
you, you are really cramped on space, you don't need two bikes if you wanna have an electric bike and a mountain bike. You can- What do you mean? You just don't use your motor. You, you ru- Come on.
• 24:35
Well, h- his point was is you could, because of the sprung weight, you could ride to the top using the assist of a, of a big descent, get off the bike, take off the battery
• 24:46
and the, and the brake- And put it in your backpack? And put it in your backpack. Why not just leave it on your bike? Yeah, that too. You know. Well- But he, his justifications were almost okay for a $2,000.
• 24:56
I think that's really expensive for less than a two-hour battery life. Well, I will say that I think that riding an e-bike up a hill at a pretty brisk pace is better than being shuttled up there in a pickup truck.
• 25:07
Absolutely. Did we talk about Bentonville and how they have a ski lift in Bentonville, Arkansas- Yeah, a couple, couple weeks ago...
• 25:13
where there's no freaking snow, so you can get your bike up to [laughs] the top of the hill? Hmm, thanks, Walmart. Yeah. That's exactly who funds it. [laughs] Well, that would be Tom Walton, though.
• 25:20
We're gonna make this happen. Is it like you roll your bike on or- It mounts onto the back of the lift and you just sit down and- It's just a regular chair, okay, sure.
• 25:28
So, yeah, I remember, I think in 19- Colorado does it, too... what year, what year did the f- first RockShox come out? It was in the '80s sometime. Um, late '80s. 'Cause I had one.
• 25:36
And but I had one after I went to Vail and we were able to ride the lift to the top of the hill in Vail. And, uh, my buddy Ivan lives out there. He was actually working at the hill then, and our buddy Tom was out there.
• 25:49
And we were going down, I mean, you know, 1980s mountain bikes were sketchy. Mm-hmm. When you're going 40 down a hill, they're real sketchy.
• 25:59
And I just remember seeing my buddy Tom doing these, like, moonwalk steps after he lost his bike somewhere along the way. [laughs] They were like 20 feet, 30 feet long. He's just like [imitates tires screeching] [laughs]
• 26:11
And then it was like [imitates tires screeching]. Yeah, it was, uh, crazy. And- Like the ch- when they throw the cheese wheel down the hill. Right. Yeah, I love that. Yeah. [laughs] Love that. Oh my God.
• 26:19
Or John Candy in Stripes where he just kinda goes slightly off course- Yeah... and just keeps running [laughs] He just keeps running. And be like, "I can't stop." Oh. [laughs] Yeah, for sure.
• 26:27
Well, that was a bizarre world. Uh, man. That cheese roll, though, that's just... Oh, God. [laughs] Brings so much joy to me every year.
• 26:35
All right, I was, I'm trying to get some information out of our good buddy Steven today. All right. He's been kind of a slacker on, uh, helping me with MMI info. Um- Do you guys have any MMI info? What's going on?
• 26:46
Um, so- Are, you're, are you- So- You're helping with it, Jessica, right? We're, we're both helping. I don't- Okay.
• 26:50
We kind of, yeah- There we- I think we, we started with we'll run a, a checkpoint, and then, like, now we're helping, which I'm cool with. Like, I help with, like, the 24 and stuff- Sure, sure... so it works out. Um,
• 27:01
so, so far we have dates. Uh, that would be- And, um-... 4/20. Yeah, well, no, 4/19. Oh, damn it. For- 'Cause 4/20 is Easter this year...
• 27:09
4/20, yeah, but it's a Sunday, so, like, you don't wanna, like, bike all day and party- 4/20-... whatever.... Easter awesome. 4/18 and 4/19. You need, like, a recovery.
• 27:15
And yeah, there's 4/18, there's the Green Mile, which is gonna be a little more like the silly, fun race. And we- So, like- I did, I did a checkpoint- Yeah... for that last year. That was a blast. Me too. It was cold.
• 27:25
Yeah, well, I guess- I was down by the river, by the lake... can't say how it'll be this year on that aspect. Oh, yeah. But yeah, that'll be, like, the nighttime, a little more fun.
• 27:34
I mean, like, they're both gonna be fun, but, like, they're gonna b- they- I've heard some of their ideas and, like, they're a little more silly, goofy. All right.
• 27:41
Whereas- So here's my warning about that to you people who are actually planning on running the event. Steel Is Real was on a Saturday.
• 27:51
Coincidentally, the one-year anniversary or whatever it was of Milwaukee By Bike was the Friday preceding. [laughs] At which point, we were still out on the river at 3:00 AM in a Duffy boat with- Oh...
• 28:05
Zito and a bunch of other people. Oof. And then I had to run the event the next day, and it was like, "Now I'm still kinda drunk from last night." [laughs] I think, um- Mm-hmm...
• 28:14
I don't know how kosher it is to say it on the podcast, but I think there- Everything goes. Say whatever you want. Um, I think Friday night is a little more
• 28:23
Green Mile, so you're probably doing a little more other substances than alcohol. Decadent. It's probably a little more weed than alcohol. Oh. There's a little bit of both. It might be both.
• 28:32
But, you know, so hopefully you set yourself up for success. [laughs] I don't know. Well, we had, we had Brent and, uh, Brett and Hunter on last year before- Yeah... the, uh- Yep, uh-huh. Okay. And I ran into Hunter.
• 28:43
He stopped at my place and said- Yeah... we're doing it again. But they- Nice to know, so- Yeah, they wanna come back on. So he- They were talking about it today.
• 28:48
I was asking Tony the other day about this, uh, this, what is it called? THCA or- THCA, take a- Some bullshit that apparently is similar- It's not marijuana until it's heated. Right.
• 28:59
We could go back and listen to last week's podcast. But he explained it last year- So well... so well, and I was like, "I don't know if it works like that for me, though."
• 29:06
[laughs] It's, yeah, it, it's a loophole in the- Farm bill or something. Y- yeah. Yeah. Totally. It is very fascinating. I have, I have seen several strains of it. Um, it's, it's pretty weird. I don't,
• 29:22
I don't get it, but that's just... [laughs] So you guys know how warm it's been- I'm old... the last couple days now with the freaking- Yeah... our one three-day winter snow event is now gone. Yeah, completely.
• 29:35
So they lucked out up at the Birke for the ski people last weekend. It was actually, they actually finished in downtown Hayward on the streets, like in- Wow... times past. Olden days. Right?
• 29:48
So I talked to Seely Dave today, and he's like, "Yeah, that's not happening for the Fatbike On Birke." It's gone, right. Mm-hmm.
• 29:54
Except that it's been getting cold enough at night, so they do make snow for, like, a 10K loop or something. So there will be snow. It will be run. I wouldn't worry too much about it if you're gonna go up there.
• 30:06
I think you'll have a good time. I'll be up there taking photos. Wendy'll be up there reading books. And, uh, yeah, it's, like, uh, next week, uh, weekend after. It's not very far away. It's, like, 10 days from now.
• 30:18
Right on. Right on. Uh, I would, I love being up there so much. [laughs] But, uh- We'll, uh, we'll see what actually happens weather-wise. We could get another snow event, I guess. Is that, is that near Eau Claire?
• 30:31
Hayward? Yeah. North of there. Chilhowee? No. What? Yeah. No, it's, uh, definitely north of Wausau- I- About two and a half- [laughs] Or two- Two and a half hours.
• 30:39
[laughs] I need a car, and there's one for sale in, in- Eau Claire?... Eau Claire that I wouldn't mind going to look at, but- Oh, Eau Claire's over... That, we can get, that, uh- That's easy to get to...
• 30:46
actually, I think, uh, on the old fatbike.com website, uh, Dustin Marsh is from Eau Claire, and he finished 30th in the Polar Roll, which is pretty impressive- Yeah...
• 30:56
because, uh, conditions this year were kind of mashed potatoey, and he wrote a little, uh, a little write-up on the old fatbike.com there. Mm-hmm. So you got that going for you. It's nice.
• 31:09
Yeah, on our way up, I noticed the, uh, they didn't even try putting up the ice rink this year. Uh- Oh, just a year, yeah. Yeah. Oh. Oh, the People's Ice Rink? Oh, every year. Yeah, the People's Ice Rink. Yeah. Yeah.
• 31:18
I thought he was gonna give it a go, and then it was like, yeah, no, it's not. It never, yeah. It was just a- It just hasn't really-... depression in the earth full of, like, you know- Dogs... trash. Oh, yeah, that too.
• 31:27
Uh, no, no dogs. No dogs yet. I was totally thinking they put it up, and I was like, oh, wait, that was for Shiver West, which means that was over a year ago. [laughs] Right. I was like, oh.
• 31:36
So no Shiver West this year, huh? Mm-mm. Why? It's not guaranteed every year. Why? Well, last year it was 20f- year 2024. 2424.
• 31:43
So you had to do it last year, and then this year we, we at least did, like, the volunteer appreciation party, so we did, like, a little winter something, you know? Right on. Well, I mean, you guys do what you guys do.
• 31:53
Well, the weather was horrible, that's why I didn't go. But the, uh, the, that Shiver West '24... Well, no, the volunteer party this year was, the weather was horrible.
• 32:00
I feel like two- Oh, okay You live two blocks away, dude. Wasn't it at Falcon Bowl? It was that, it was that delicate. [laughs] It was a delicate flower. I just had Falcon Bowl, right? It was a delicate flower. Yeah.
• 32:09
Yes. It was Falcon Bowl. Oh. All right. Speaking of next benefit, are, will you be attending the Guitar Smasher event at Lakefront Brewery this time? I- Did you get your invites yet? I did put my RSVP in. Me too.
• 32:23
So, yes. Okay. That's exciting. Oh, by the by, if you get a chance to see either The Truck, which in talking to Hamilton, it was the one at the end of,
• 32:39
or in the middle of Bite-toberfest about, like, four-ish, five-ish years ago, maybe seven years ago. I don't know. The Truck?
• 32:47
It was Camel Tow Truck, but then they found out there's a guy, his name, or a guy's business- Camel Tow Truck... that has that. So many fellas. Oh, yeah.
• 32:55
And he's, and, uh, he, I guess he's just an absolute asshole, like his whole- The Camel Tow Truck, yep, yep... yeah, like this to- Camel Tow Truck company is just, like, the worst. Yeah. Oh. Oh.
• 33:03
And he's just like, "I don't wanna have anything to do with this dude at all" [laughs] So he just, like, kinda just trunk- Kind of a clever name, though... truck-ated. Yeah. And, but now it's, like, The Truck.
• 33:12
It's just simpler as The Truck. Awesome, fun, good, rock and roll. [laughs] And opening for them was Kitty Soft Paw. Mm. There. I've seen the name before and I, th- they're worth it too. It's fun.
• 33:26
It, they were fun, fun, fun at Club Garibaldi. Did we touch last week- That was good, good stuff... did we touch last week on how the Motorcycle Applebee, Applebee's shut down? Mm-hmm. Oh.
• 33:37
That would be- I- That would be Fuel Cafe on 5th Street. [laughs] Oh yeah, we did on Fuel. [laughs] I never heard it called that, but yeah. Oh. That was, uh, no, no, that was, that was Stacy Dolls. That was Stacy Dolls.
• 33:46
Yeah, I was like Stacy Dolls... that was her brilliant, yes... shut down. [laughs] That was, yeah, full on, yeah, [laughs] full on props on that one- But-... 'cause I, I'll be like, "Okay" But okay, so-...
• 33:53
"nobody else can say"... so it shut down, like, three days before the whole Mama Tried thing- Ah, it's their loss...
• 33:59
and Flat Out Friday, so I did go to Ellwood's on Wednesday and the museum on Thursday, shot a bunch of photos of the boonie races, which I love. Those are good. Do I care about Flat Out Friday?
• 34:13
Kinda sorta, but not for 40 bones. Always out of cost. In the Fiserv. I mean- And at the Fiserv, I'm like, eh... it's like watching it in a mall. Nah. You know? It's like, dude, I don't know.
• 34:22
No, the, the, the, the events leading up to it that whole week is awesome. Yep. Yep. Friday night was- And I felt pretty good...
• 34:28
well, Friday night instead, uh, Eddie Spaghetti and Metal Marty from SuperSuckers were at Sabbatic with Jake Arvis opening. Nice. That was an awesome, perfect- Which, which was on my calendar, and I completely spaced.
• 34:40
It- Didn't they do Flat Out Friday in, uh, that one building on 2nd Street one time? Yeah, that was a blast. I used to work there. I was, I was there for, I, like, and it wasn't even that big.
• 34:49
It was pretty cool, but- I was there too. Yeah, I remember. Oh, that's, that was the Mama Tried, like the motorcycle show portion, or was it the racing portion? No, I, I think there was racing in the- Oh, right on...
• 34:58
in the building on, like, the wood floors- Yep... like on the- Oh, yeah, that, see-... like the, where the train tracks go right by the- Mm-hmm. It re- First Ward... it's where Digital Bridge is now.
• 35:06
It reminds me of Rocker- Oh. Yeah...
• 35:07
it reminds me of Rockerbox, how Rockerbox used to be on Center Street and it was awesome, and then they moved it up to Road America, and then it got too big for its britches, and then it just kinda, like... I don't know.
• 35:19
Anyway, that's motorcycle stuff. They're still two wheels though. Right, right. Did you get an inside scoop on Fuel or anything, or just you thought they'd be open and they weren't?
• 35:26
Uh, well, what started it out was Corey Bauman, who was in the band Robits, uh, was like, "Well, we suddenly got canceled from our gig," because last year they were at Fuel and it was awesome because we had a, like a 50-person mosh pit going on and stuff, and it was really great.
• 35:44
[laughs] Uh, and I was looking forward to it again this year 'cause they were scheduled to play at Fuel, and then he's like, "Oh, I don't know what's going on."
• 35:52
And then, like, a day later or two days later, I'm like, "Well, here's what's going on. They're not gonna be open." [laughs] Oh. You're not getting paid. Well, it, it was a sad state of affairs. Yeah.
• 36:01
And it just, I didn't even know how that, th- there's so many weird tentacles of all of those things that I have no idea what's going on with it, but... You can still get the sandwiches from Corey. Yep. The other Corey.
• 36:14
Oh, yeah. The other Corey. Corey the sandwich maker. Yep. Corey, what's he, what does he call himself? Yeah. Sandwich fixer. Corey the sandwich fixer. Yeah. Yeah, like- [laughs] What about Corey the bike fencer? Yeah.
• 36:24
Remember, remember that guy? He's gone. He's still in Seattle. It's like a vibey boutique now. Hey, man. Is that what it is, like an antique store?
• 36:32
I move west That's, that's where I got the Kona And- It was Corey's That's where I got my Kona... oh That's where I got my Kona [laughs] Yeah. I think that's also where Brett got his Kona. Yeah.
• 36:41
'Cause didn't he work there for a while? Yeah, it was Brett. Oh, yeah [laughs] There's only one, there was only one Kona dealer in all of Milwaukee, so- Jared, his- And guess what? [laughs] Derek Henry- Hubert?
• 36:50
Fucking, uh- Derek Henry All right No. That was like- I don't know how many of you are up at 1:20 in the morning, but- I was just- Jared texted me like, "Hey, man, what's going on?" At like 1:19 in the morning.
• 37:01
I'm like, "Well, I am in bed sleeping." [laughs] The next day I'm like, "What?" Well, it was after, it was Saturday after the open house. Ah. But, yeah, I was tired. I went home and went to sleep- Me too...
• 37:12
'cause I was tired. [laughs] Me too. All right, everybody. Hey, Jessica and Dan, thank you very much. If we get more MMI info, I think we'll have, uh, Brett and Hunter on and- Oh. Yeah...
• 37:23
so if, if we didn't say it before, MMI is Milwaukee Messenger Invitational, which has been going on for a long time. It was, uh, yeah, they popped it up at, uh, or they were promo-ing it up at Stuper Bowl this year.
• 37:34
Okay. Um, and, uh, yeah... yeah, there's, there's people from DC, people from, uh, you know, Philadelphia and whatever over there, Chicago obviously, Minneapolis, Milwaukee. The Little Apple. Yeah.
• 37:44
And it's kind of- She knows them all... kind of a big deal. Yeah. And then the night before, to me, sounds like a good idea to not get- Yeah... super hammered and maybe take a little greenage. Yeah.
• 37:55
'Cause, like, they usually do an out of towner race anyways that night, so it's not like there wouldn't have been something going on that night, so now it's just- Also-...
• 38:03
a little different, maybe give you a little insight on the- Yeah... you know, locations the next day. Who knows? I wanna see a bag pile, you know?
• 38:09
I've been, I, I, so I've been obviously talking to Brandon a bunch with the Omnium connection. He's- Oh... he's gonna do something. He doesn't know what yet, but the Omnium presence will be present.
• 38:20
Um- I didn't know if he could say anything on that or not, [laughs] so you said something on it Why not? Let's say Omnium because- Oh... yeah, we, we'll Omnium the shit out of this place. Uh, all right then, everybody.
• 38:30
Thank you for listening to our rambling, non-coherent show. Once again, next week will be 295, even though Tony wanted it to be this week. True. [laughs] Uh- Chuck the deuces...
• 38:45
uh, thanks again to Jessica and Dan, and then Mike and Tony and you guys can all fuck off.
• 38:51
  [laughs] [outro music]
