- 0:32Let's see.
- 0:33This is April.
- 0:35Hello and welcome to Drive through episode number 67.
- 0:38We don't do that anymore.
- 0:40Oh, I'm sorry.
- 0:41I thought this was a podcast where we don't say anything.
- 0:44You're killing it.
- 0:45You're killing it right now, Tanya.
- 0:47You're doing so good.
- 0:48I'm so proud of you.
- 0:51We don't have a formal showcase, but I don't know what should we label
- 0:54this because the headline read.
- 0:57The word war.
- 0:58You know, we have department of war now, the war and the war, but it's not a war.
- 1:01It's a conflict.
- 1:02But then I heard there was another way to describe it.
- 1:04Isn't that right Tanya?
- 1:06An excursion.
- 1:08We're going on an excursion to the desert apparently.
- 1:12I see what Eric's talking about.
- 1:13The war.
- 1:15The war.
- 1:17I don't think we're quite there yet.
- 1:20No.
- 1:20I feel like it's just a bunch of the do moments here and I'm
- 1:24gonna just come out swinging.
- 1:26This is comes from car scoops, right?
- 1:28The Iran War War.
- 1:30Again, excursion, conflict, whatever adjective you want to use to describe
- 1:34it could end tomorrow and the auto sales industry will still lose.
- 1:39A million sales.
- 1:41It's been ending tomorrow for about three weeks, I think.
- 1:44I mean, yes, we're in the middle of like the most economic turmoil ever.
- 1:49Who's gonna run out and go buy a supercar?
- 1:51YouTubers, Instagram influencers, tiktoks.
- 1:56None of the rich and powerful Middle Eastern are gonna
- 1:58buy a supercar right now.
- 2:00I think they're a little busy.
- 2:01Wouldn't you say what kind, what, what is this reporting?
- 2:04What, what is this stuff?
- 2:06Uh, but no, in in seriousness though, another side effect of all of this
- 2:11that's going on, and I think this next one was brought to light even before the
- 2:15excursion started, which was the dilution of our fuel to maintain the E 15 that
- 2:22we use in the winter throughout all of May as we head into the hotter days.
- 2:27And Tanya, I know you've been out of the business for a while, but
- 2:29can you explain what this means and like how this actually works?
- 2:33Because I think it's important for us to discuss.
- 2:35I mean, it means poor fuel economy.
- 2:38Well, why is that?
- 2:39Because I don't think a lot of people understand what the E
- 2:4110, E 20 E 15 actually means.
- 2:44I'll put it in layman's terms.
- 2:45That's a percentage of alcohol that's in mixed, it's a percentage of ethanol.
- 2:49So the 10 is 10%.
- 2:5015 is 15%.
- 2:52Although, so it's really meant to be an octane booster 'cause
- 2:56it has a higher octane number.
- 2:58So it's good if you're trying to prevent engine knocking or something, but doesn't
- 3:03have as much combustion capability, I guess to put it simply as gasoline does.
- 3:09So you're not actually getting as good a fuel economy than if
- 3:12you're using straight gasoline.
- 3:14So depending on what they're pricing it at, you're not actually saving anything.
- 3:19If they keep the price at $5 a gallon and now it's more ethanol and you're
- 3:23getting worse fuel economy, then you're going to the pump quicker.
- 3:27So the rule of thumb I heard in racing was.
- 3:29It takes twice the amount of alcohol to make the same power as gasoline.
- 3:33Right?
- 3:33I mean, that's probably a stretch.
- 3:36I mean, they say it's like 30% less energy per gallon than gasoline, so
- 3:40I mean, that's not insignificant.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43But the bigger problem with extending it into the hotter
- 3:45months, the way I understood it, and correct me if I'm wrong, is
- 3:49that it tends to evaporate quicker.
- 3:52In the hotter days, especially when the car heats up and the tank
- 3:55heats up and we have all these evap systems that let the fumes escape.
- 3:59So basically your tank is emptying itself as the alcohol evaporates out of the fuel.
- 4:05Yes, and it also has a problem that ethanol will absorb water from the air.
- 4:09So it's particularly bad.
- 4:10I mean, maybe that's less impactful if you're constantly using your carb.
- 4:15That's why they say it's not good to leave ethanol or fuels with ethanol
- 4:19like in a lawnmower that you button up for the winter or some other piece
- 4:23of equipment that that you don't use.
- 4:24Or even a car if you've got a garage queen that you don't drive very often
- 4:28because the ethanol actually absorb water and now you're gonna have water
- 4:32and then it'll separate and you'll have a water phase and then a fuel phase.
- 4:36And obviously that's no good when you go to go combust.
- 4:41Chemical term for that is hydroscopic.
- 4:43Is that right?
- 4:44That it likes water or hydroscopic?
- 4:47I can't remember.
- 4:47Remember.
- 4:48I wasn't very good at chemistry.
- 4:50I think it's called bend over and Open your wallet.
- 4:53Yeah, I grow scopic.
- 4:56And the reason I bring that up is because brake fluid suffers the same problem.
- 5:01And I don't think a lot of people realize that if you go too long on
- 5:04your brake fluid and don't flush those fluids out, you end up with water
- 5:08concentrated in your brake fluid.
- 5:10And there's tests where it, there's like these litmus sticks.
- 5:12You can stick in there to see, you know, the potency of your brake fluid.
- 5:15But realistically, Brad, you just went through this on your tundra
- 5:18changing brakes and it's like, well what about the brake fluid?
- 5:22Thankfully I changed the brake fluid over the, the winter when I
- 5:25had my inspection done because it was on my list of fluids to change
- 5:30just in the maintenance schedule.
- 5:33The breaks themselves were not, but the fluid was so, yeah.
- 5:36Um, but yeah, you're, you're right.
- 5:37And it's probably, I'm assuming it would mean the same thing for like clutch
- 5:40fluid and trans, well, probably not transmission fluid 'cause that's always
- 5:44moving, but that's hydraulic fluid.
- 5:45So it's different.
- 5:46Yeah.
- 5:46I mean the other bad thing is ethanol is and alcohol.
- 5:49What does alcohol like to do to things?
- 5:52Make 'em drunk.
- 5:54Make it what?
- 5:55Make it drunk.
- 5:57Our cars all need to go to AA now.
- 5:58There you go.
- 6:01Alcohol, things like that aren't usually good on rubber parts.
- 6:08Yeah.
- 6:08Dries out rubber.
- 6:10So all your seals, all your hoses, all that stuff.
- 6:13I don't need dried out hose, which is particularly important when
- 6:18you're talking about classic cars.
- 6:19Especially cars pre 1980.
- 6:21I mean, they run on the newer fuels as long as you burn through 'em.
- 6:24But to your point, Tanya, if they sit for extended periods of time,
- 6:28you're risking damaging something in the system that could be
- 6:31catastrophic and extremely expensive.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:34I mean, not only, I mean, they're probably more prone to dissolve
- 6:38rubber, which would be even worse.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:40And so, I mean, that's why, again, I think it's not recommended for motors, whether
- 6:46it's a lawnmower or a boat even that sits.
- 6:50For a long time, or your garage queen.
- 6:52Well, and the reason I wanted to bring it up and talk about it as an important
- 6:55thing is car show season is upon us.
- 6:58People are taking 'em out.
- 6:59They're cleaning them up.
- 7:00They're filling them up after sitting over the winter, and they might not be
- 7:03thinking about the amount of alcohol for ethanol that's in fuel right now.
- 7:07And if you're getting a higher dosage, you know, upwards of 20% at some of
- 7:11the stations, then you only take it to a car, show a couple miles away or
- 7:15whatever, and then you let it sit for the rest of the summer, you're gonna
- 7:18be in deep trouble come the fall.
- 7:21Honestly, I had that thought when I heard that and I was like, man, I really
- 7:24need to stretch the legs on the gt.
- 7:27But I'm like, I probably need to add fuel to it.
- 7:29Well, I guess I'm not gonna add fuel now 'cause it sits for a pretty long time
- 7:34and I don't wanna put that in the tank.
- 7:36You just need to run out to the track and get some from Summit Point.
- 7:40Or I can bring some up from I stop.
- 7:42I can stop easily Stop by, uh, dominion.
- 7:45Yeah.
- 7:45Get some a hundred octane or 110 race fuel.
- 7:48That is the option for a lot of cars.
- 7:50You'd give it the old Italian tuneup?
- 7:52Hell yeah.
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:52A hundred octane At a hundred mile an hour.
- 7:54Let's go.
- 7:57It clears out all the carbon.
- 7:58It'll, it'll give that car what?
- 8:00115 horsepower?
- 8:02That 110?
- 8:03I'll have 111.
- 8:07I will say there was a, a Wawa, I think it was at the Wawa down
- 8:12the road where they gave me the option for ethanol free gasoline.
- 8:17Yeah, so they just built a new sheet up here too, and they have all the colors of
- 8:22the rainbow as we like to refer to 'em.
- 8:24'cause sheets, colors.
- 8:25They're fuel pumps.
- 8:26So you know, red is this and Diesel's green.
- 8:28And the blue fuel is the Flex fuel ydi.
- 8:31And not all of them have it.
- 8:32The ones in Pennsylvania for sure have the, all the colors of the rainbow.
- 8:36And they have an orange, which is an ethanol free, it's not quite
- 8:40like a hundred octane, but it's designed for the older cars that
- 8:42can't run, you know, between 10 and E 15 and all that kind of stuff.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:46I think the, the Wawa had a black one for the ethanol free, a green one
- 8:51for diesel, and then some other rando color for, or maybe it was yellow or
- 8:56something, I don't know, whatever.
- 8:57Right.
- 8:58But they, they, they kind of had it color coded as well.
- 9:00I was like, Hmm.
- 9:02Not too often that you see ethanol free fuel these days.
- 9:06And this is all a result too, of, you know, the petroleum
- 9:09situation that we're in right now.
- 9:10But more importantly, there was another article that was again,
- 9:14sort of like a de do moment in that diesel production has always been
- 9:19stifled, especially in this country.
- 9:22And it's down right now on top of everything else, which is why you're
- 9:25seeing the price of diesel escalate so much faster than gasoline.
- 9:29And people might be listening to this and saying, who cares?
- 9:32I don't have anything diesel.
- 9:33I don't care about diesel.
- 9:35Well, do you care about the packages being delivered from Amazon, from UPS?
- 9:39'cause all those are diesels and the trains that move them across the country,
- 9:42those are diesels and the semi trucks that moved them from the trains to the Walmart.
- 9:46Those are diesels and a lot of generators and construction equipment.
- 9:50Diesel, diesel, diesel.
- 9:51And to make it even worse, there's a lot of people out there that heat
- 9:55their homes on home heating oil, also known as wet folks, diesel.
- 10:01Diesel.
- 10:02Exactly.
- 10:03The good thing about that is at least we're heading into
- 10:05the warmer months, right?
- 10:06At least we're a lot of the country.
- 10:08So it, those people should see.
- 10:11I don't know if they'd see relief, but it shouldn't see it escalate
- 10:14as much as they normally would if we were heading in the winter.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:17And I, I think the timing was like just right, that it started to
- 10:21escalate, you know, and start to accelerate really hard as we were
- 10:25coming out of the colder months.
- 10:26'cause can you imagine filling 2, 3, 5, 700 gallons of diesel?
- 10:32You know, some people have massive tanks to heat their houses
- 10:35and their buildings and stuff.
- 10:36At $6 a gallon, that's the street price for what you pump into
- 10:41your Cummins Dodge Ram diesel.
- 10:44Right.
- 10:44But when you pay for home heating oil, add another 30 cents a gallon or to 50
- 10:48cents a gallon on top of that, it is.
- 10:51Bonkers, expensive.
- 10:53So diesel is a crucial part of the world and also the world economy.
- 10:58You know, we don't talk about Dieselgate too much anymore.
- 11:01Not not a ton of people running around in diesel cars, but there's still a
- 11:03ton of diesel that moves the world.
- 11:06It's absolutely incredible.
- 11:07So I'm hoping that we'll see the prices come back down.
- 11:10But if they don't, I mean, good night.
- 11:13I guess we'll have to start like.
- 11:14Now that wouldn't even help anyway.
- 11:16I was gonna say start shopping at Brick and Mortars.
- 11:18But they still need to get their supplies from senior.
- 11:20Correct?
- 11:21Correct.
- 11:21Like either way, there's no way to avoid it.
- 11:23Drones, ev drones, that's what it is.
- 11:26Just we're gonna deliver.
- 11:27See, Amazon's gonna make it a reality.
- 11:29That's, they said they would, but that's just it.
- 11:31Brad, your point about shopping and and needing stuff and the way we buy
- 11:34things just in time and order it online and have it show up the next day.
- 11:38Think about this though.
- 11:40We're getting nailed still with tariffs.
- 11:42They haven't gone away and now we have this diesel crisis on the other side.
- 11:46The cost of everything is going to triple and that's going to have a effect on
- 11:51everything to include the car community.
- 11:54So the next time you need to go buy something simple like, oh, I don't
- 11:57know, oil filters or brake pads.
- 11:59Don't be surprised when it used to cost 20 bucks and now it's 200.
- 12:03I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I don't know.
- 12:05Let's talk about something a little bit nicer.
- 12:07Maybe not so much.
- 12:08'cause these folks are crazy.
- 12:10Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi News.
- 12:13So I'm just gonna, I'm gonna read this Volkswagen's considering an EV comeback
- 12:18for the Tore, so now I'm confused.
- 12:21'cause they have the atlas which replaced the Tore and the Tiguan is the size of
- 12:25the old tore got re badged and there's a whole bunch of badge engineering there.
- 12:29But aside all that, I have to say if this rendering is right,
- 12:34this might be, and I'm gonna put asterisk and air quotes around this.
- 12:38This might be the best looking VW in the last 10 years.
- 12:44Tell me I'm wrong.
- 12:45No, that was the first thing I thought.
- 12:46I was like, wow, that's actually not terrible looking.
- 12:49Right.
- 12:50It looks like the SUVs of 10 plus years ago, which were
- 12:53actually quite handsomely styled.
- 12:55This is proportioned.
- 12:57It doesn't have any dumb lines.
- 12:59You said SUVs of 10 years ago.
- 13:01You mean like the tore Shush.
- 13:03You shush.
- 13:05I mean, they only show it from the front threequarter angle, but I like it.
- 13:10I don't like it as an ev, but I like it.
- 13:13And I don't wanna say I'm not sold on EVs 'cause I get it.
- 13:16I'm not sold on Volkswagen doing EVs.
- 13:19They do not have a good track record at this point, and I'm just
- 13:22considering their sales numbers.
- 13:23I don't wanna talk about reliability or recalls or anything like that.
- 13:26I just, I don't get it.
- 13:28Anybody that would buy a brand new Volkswagen right now is a moron.
- 13:35Just, just putting it out there.
- 13:38Just that it's putting that out there into the universe.
- 13:40Anybody that buys a new Volkswagen right now is a, here's the
- 13:43kicker about this article.
- 13:45Okay.
- 13:45More so than the design, which caught my attention.
- 13:47It's this one line.
- 13:49In the article it says, the new sales boss, Martin Sander at VW has said
- 13:54there remains a gap in the market for upmarket cars that don't carry
- 13:58a premium badge, which the to reg and the Fon, which was discontinued
- 14:04in 2016, were designed to serve.
- 14:06And I said, really?
- 14:09Really, here's the bigger question.
- 14:12Why are they bothering doing this?
- 14:15What EV do they have right now that's actually doing well?
- 14:20Well, the ID buzz got killed.
- 14:22Yeah, the ID four got killed.
- 14:24I heard that too.
- 14:26So what, which one is doing, you've already lost twice.
- 14:32Three times the charm.
- 14:34And we're not counting the Porsche stuff that they're backpedaling on.
- 14:37Like they canceled the McCann ev, they're pulling back on the Tacan
- 14:41'cause they took a bath on that.
- 14:43So that's two more right there.
- 14:45Not counting stuff that they probably sold in Europe that we never saw,
- 14:49like the ID three and all that.
- 14:50My guess is the ID buzz and the ID four were a little too out there
- 14:56when it came to styling and design.
- 14:58And this is more in line with just like a normal looking S-U-V-I-I.
- 15:04I'm not saying that they're right, I just, this is where I think their thinking is.
- 15:07I could follow your argument with the van that that was too much.
- 15:13Like people aren't, it was too expensive.
- 15:15It wasn't too out there.
- 15:17It looked like it.
- 15:18It was definitely too expensive.
- 15:18It was definitely too expensive and it has the cost price to it, but I don't
- 15:21think the ID four was so wildly styled that it should have deterred anyone.
- 15:26If anything, maybe it was too small for people.
- 15:28Yes, but does anybody really need a electric toric?
- 15:33I can see the ID four being too small for some people.
- 15:37I can, I can see that this is the General Motors problem.
- 15:42VW has somehow usurped the way they've done business because
- 15:48we joked about this and GM is really not in the news right now.
- 15:52Like we made fun of them.
- 15:53Like, I don't know how many drive-throughs ago.
- 15:55Like it's general morons over there.
- 15:57Right?
- 15:57They don't know what they're doing.
- 15:58They're always 10 years behind.
- 15:59They're trying to catch up with everybody else, and by the time everybody else
- 16:02pivots, they're like, we're, where?
- 16:03Where'd the party go, guys?
- 16:05I thought we were, you thought we were jamming out here?
- 16:07This statement that the Toag and the Fon, but we need to fill a premium.
- 16:12That's what Audi is for and beyond Audi.
- 16:16That's what Porsche's for.
- 16:18And then, oh wait, they own Bentley.
- 16:21So if we wanna go premium prestige, luxury models, why don't we
- 16:26build an Evie Benga or whatever that thing is called right now.
- 16:30There is a new Bentley coming, the Bentley, uh, the Barnato
- 16:34sounds like Bono from Formula one.
- 16:36The barnacle.
- 16:37Yeah, the barnacle.
- 16:38Like it looks like a barnacle.
- 16:39This thing is horrendous.
- 16:40But the point is, it's like, why are we wasting the time?
- 16:43Everybody said when the Fon came out, nobody's gonna spend
- 16:47a hundred thousand dollars on a re badged steel framed a eight.
- 16:52And guess what?
- 16:53Nobody wasted a hundred thousand dollars on a steel framed a eight.
- 16:57It was pointless.
- 16:58So we're gonna repeat the mistakes of the past Volkswagen.
- 17:02Get out of your own head.
- 17:05Like they're delusional.
- 17:06They're totally delusional.
- 17:07They have no idea what they're doing.
- 17:09They don't listen to the consumer.
- 17:11No.
- 17:11Hell no.
- 17:12Hell no.
- 17:13I saw spy photos of the new golf, the Mark nine, I guess
- 17:16you know, the ninth generation.
- 17:18It's even bigger.
- 17:19If you can imagine.
- 17:20It's gonna be a Tiguan by the time it's on.
- 17:22The golf keeps getting bigger and uglier.
- 17:25It has this funky front end.
- 17:27It looks like a Kia.
- 17:28You know the one with the wraparound front light that goes
- 17:31from like one end to the other.
- 17:32I was like, this is the future of the golf.
- 17:35Really.
- 17:36Like you guys are out of, you've lost touch with reality.
- 17:38Like what are you doing?
- 17:40So now we got this Bentley built on top of the Q five, which
- 17:44that is a useless market too.
- 17:46Who's gonna buy a cheap Bentley?
- 17:48So this is again, the game, right?
- 17:50Like in the GM paradigm where it's like, we're gonna make a Chevy
- 17:53that's better than a Cadillac.
- 17:55Just sell a Cadillac as your premium model and Chevy's your base.
- 17:58Volkswagen is the base.
- 18:00Model in the equation here in the United States for this family, but we're gonna
- 18:04try to do a bargain basement Bentley.
- 18:06So they spent all the tooling, the research and the stuff
- 18:10to build on top of this Audi.
- 18:11It looks terrible and nobody's gonna buy it.
- 18:15I'm gonna throw down a challenge.
- 18:17Oh boy.
- 18:17Here we go for the show.
- 18:19Do you think we could do a season?
- 18:23No.
- 18:24You know where I'm going, don't you, without talking about Volkswagen.
- 18:26It's impossible.
- 18:26Without talking about Volkswagen.
- 18:28No, we did it with Tesla.
- 18:29We gave up Tesla for a year and we did it without BMW.
- 18:33But they made it easy.
- 18:35It's impossible because if you look at this next article, it,
- 18:38it's stuff like this that makes you beat your head up against the wall.
- 18:42China is getting a Jetta.
- 18:45A Jetta, SUV.
- 18:48Drop the mic.
- 18:49Folks.
- 18:50Talk about badge engineering, bad badge engineering.
- 18:52This looks terrible too.
- 18:54Well, it's another car.
- 18:55It looks like they're just rebadging.
- 18:56Another car.
- 18:57The Jetta X, they call it the Jet X, also known as the id.
- 19:04Aura.
- 19:04T six S. UV.
- 19:06Not to be confused with the id.
- 19:07Unix oh nine.
- 19:09What?
- 19:10What about the The id?
- 19:11Linux?
- 19:12Dude, this is ter.
- 19:13This is the kind of stuff I don't understand.
- 19:15And then Volkswagen's going after the Chinese market.
- 19:18They're up against BYD.
- 19:20Porsche has already lost their ass in China, so we're gonna try with this.
- 19:26This is what they want.
- 19:28Really, I don't know.
- 19:30Electric, SUV.
- 19:32Ugh.
- 19:33But that's okay because Volkswagen, not only are they getting rid of the ID
- 19:37four, as Tanya mentioned, they're scaling down production capacity by a million.
- 19:41Cars and layoffs are imminent, so they're in good shape.
- 19:46I mean, I guess the, they gotta hit rock bottom before and
- 19:51they can rise from the ashes.
- 19:52I don't know, before they hit rock bottomer.
- 19:55Well, formula One's gonna bring them there.
- 19:57Again, this is all to pay for Formula One.
- 20:00I'm telling you, there's no other way to do it.
- 20:02So when do we start seeing.
- 20:08Volkswagen sell off pieces of the company.
- 20:12Like what's the, the brand in Spain and Sayat.
- 20:17Sayat do, do they own Sayat?
- 20:19Yeah.
- 20:19Like what if they sell off pieces?
- 20:20What if they sell off Sayat?
- 20:22What if they sell off Audi?
- 20:24God forbid they sell off Porsche.
- 20:26They sell off Bentley to somebody else.
- 20:27I mean, well that's coming next.
- 20:30There has to be, I think you're right.
- 20:31They'll scuttle the stuff that just doesn't sell.
- 20:34That'll all end up at JLR or something like that.
- 20:37Yeah, especially Bentley.
- 20:37Like all the Bri, the British bands.
- 20:40The British.
- 20:41The British bands.
- 20:42That's what I really meant to say.
- 20:43They wanna get back together.
- 20:43The bands wanna get back together.
- 20:45The Jags and the Bentleys and the Rolls Royces.
- 20:47Right?
- 20:47They don't need to be owned by the Germans anymore.
- 20:50No.
- 20:50They go to, they go to India.
- 20:52Yeah, a hundred.
- 20:53There's a G. If they get rid of all those, they get rid of all those.
- 20:56Then what do they become?
- 20:57Volkswagen?
- 20:58Nobody's gonna pay $50,000 for a golf.
- 21:03Because that's their problem right now.
- 21:05So they don't solve a problem if they're gonna keep doing what they
- 21:07do, but just divest the other brands.
- 21:10People don't care.
- 21:11People don't realize that it's Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen.
- 21:14So if nobody's buying a $50,000 golf today with the trifecta, they're not gonna buy
- 21:19it tomorrow when they're by themselves.
- 21:21You, you and I understand that If it was me doing it, I would sell those
- 21:25off and completely redo Volkswagen from the ground up and yeah, start
- 21:30listening to the consumer and selling vehicles that people actually wanna
- 21:33buy at prices that consumers can actually afford and start over.
- 21:37Basically, I, I think Brad's point is a little less General Motors and a little
- 21:41more Toyota is what they need right now.
- 21:44Yeah.
- 21:45Because the only reason, well, to me, the only reason General Motors is still
- 21:49around is because we bailed them out.
- 21:52There is that too.
- 21:53Is the German government gonna come and bail out Volkswagen?
- 21:56I have to dig into that, but people have told me that there is something between
- 22:01the Porsche Mafia that runs all that and the German state, they are involved.
- 22:07It's sort of like too big to fail type of situation.
- 22:10Yeah, of course they are.
- 22:11I mean it's the same thing with isn't Renault owned by the French government?
- 22:15Yeah, to an extent.
- 22:16Or something like is owned by the public, like the French public.
- 22:19Yeah.
- 22:19Volkswagen is facing a 44% profit.
- 22:22Crash driven government in the state of Lower Saxony are discussing measures
- 22:27to aid the firm driven by the need to protect German jobs and industrial sector.
- 22:31Say too big to fail.
- 22:33As part of its crisis management, Volkswagen is considering
- 22:35slashing up to 30 to 50,000 jobs by getting rid of Betley.
- 22:42How does that help?
- 22:43So, so is this one of the situations where they're prying wolf trying to
- 22:48force the government to come in and step in and help to save those 50,000 jobs?
- 22:54No.
- 22:54See, but they didn't tell you where they're gonna cut the 50,000 jobs.
- 22:57Oh, they're gonna cut 'em in the us.
- 22:59Exactly.
- 22:59You got it.
- 23:00The Tennessee factory will get shut down before they'll shut down one.
- 23:03Well, they've already shut down a couple of factories in Europe.
- 23:06'cause we talked about that already.
- 23:08But the thing is, they're gonna cut the labor force from other
- 23:10places where it doesn't make sense.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:13Well, Chattanooga already shut down because they're stopping.
- 23:15Id buzz.
- 23:15Well at least that production line.
- 23:17Well, all three of them that they made there.
- 23:18Yeah, pretty much.
- 23:20But they can also cut their factories in South America and Mexico.
- 23:24'cause vehicles are still produced there.
- 23:26Those governments wouldn't step in and help.
- 23:28I'm sure Volkswagen has lobbyists on Capitol Hill right now trying
- 23:31to say, Hey, we're getting ready to cut these 50,000 jobs.
- 23:34The economy's already strained.
- 23:35Why don't you go ahead and kick a little bit of bailout money out the
- 23:38way and see, you know, if we, we can keep these jobs going about that.
- 23:41All that.
- 23:41It's all a far, it's all a far and then we talked about last month
- 23:45how they're building munitions or something now too, to try to
- 23:48diversify their engineering portfolio.
- 23:50So it's like, all right, whatever to aid the, um, the losing F1 team.
- 23:54Well that and what, what did we call the excursion?
- 23:56The excursion.
- 23:57The excursion.
- 23:58But you know, they, they have taken other avenues to try to
- 24:01shore up their pocketbooks, right?
- 24:03Tanya?
- 24:03They've gotten in bed with Hot Wheels.
- 24:09They're tugging at the nostalgia heartstrings.
- 24:11They are, you know, at 15 bucks a pop for two hot Wheels in this
- 24:14special premium collection pack.
- 24:16But you know what this says, you know what?
- 24:18Cars aren't in this bubble pack?
- 24:21It's not an ID buzz.
- 24:22It's not an ID four.
- 24:23It's not this Jetta X thing.
- 24:24It's not the benga or the take hand.
- 24:27It's the R 30 twos.
- 24:29The last real enthusiast Volkswagens that they made, whether the R,
- 24:33the second gen R 30 twos sold well or not doesn't really matter.
- 24:36But the point is these are the cars we wanted.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:41And it does pull up the nostalgia strings, like you said, Brad, but they need to
- 24:44go back to building cars like this.
- 24:46That's what I'm saying.
- 24:47Like it to fix Volkswagen, they need to go back to what Volkswagen did
- 24:50best, and they were their best in the late nineties and early two thousands.
- 24:54Yeah, they had finally figured it out and then after that it was like
- 24:58all downhill race to the bottom.
- 25:01But that's okay, because you know what?
- 25:02Sometimes when you visit other companies, you realize how good you got it.
- 25:08So when Volkswagen looks over the fence and says.
- 25:12What's going on over there?
- 25:13Stellantis.
- 25:15They feel good about themselves.
- 25:17It's getting weird.
- 25:18It's stellantis.
- 25:18Can, can you pronounce this plant name for me because I'm, I, it it's pronounced
- 25:24in a certain way in my head and I think it's wrong, so I don't wanna say it.
- 25:28It's French.
- 25:29I, I I understand.
- 25:30And the way I understand the non phonetic pronunciation.
- 25:34'cause you gotta remember French, like half the letters are silent
- 25:37or they have a different tonality.
- 25:39So I asked my wife, 'cause she speaks French, it's poi That's
- 25:43pretty close to what I was thinking.
- 25:44Yeah, I knew what you were thinking.
- 25:46But that is not correct.
- 25:51Are are the, the people that work there, a bunch of, of PWAs, well, they're
- 25:55not working there anymore because they're gonna stop making cars in the
- 26:00French Stellantis factory and they're gonna shift to parts and recycling.
- 26:05You might say, who cares?
- 26:07You know, it's another factory that's shutting its doors, so be it.
- 26:10There's a couple important things about the POI factory and that is that
- 26:15Chrysler has been using that plant since the 1940s, that that's an old poi.
- 26:23Now, in terms of the cars that are, that are sold there, or were,
- 26:27I'm sorry, that were built there.
- 26:28That's the Citra and DS three.
- 26:31That's the hot hatch.
- 26:32So I'm a little sad about that 'cause that means that car's not getting built.
- 26:36Along with the Opal Mocca, CUV, which would be better known to a lot of people
- 26:40in the United States as the Buick Enclave.
- 26:43Not really sad about that going away.
- 26:45I think the sadder part is that it's a piece of history.
- 26:48Oddly enough, this particular article, which you can find in our show notes,
- 26:51was brought to me by a member of this society of automotive historians,
- 26:54and so they were talking about how the plant is even older than when
- 26:58Chrysler took it over in the forties.
- 26:59It was used by Ford, it was used by other people.
- 27:01It's been around for over a hundred years in automotive production,
- 27:05so it's sort of living on.
- 27:08But no more cars will be rolling out the doors of the POI factory.
- 27:12That's what I was just about to say.
- 27:13So it, it looks like it's, it's not shutting down completely,
- 27:17it's just being retooled.
- 27:18Correct.
- 27:18So at least from a economic standpoint, from a job standpoint, like they're,
- 27:22they'll probably cut some of the workforce, but not all of it.
- 27:26Yeah.
- 27:26It's sort of like Willy Wonka when the guy used to put the caps on the toothpaste.
- 27:30Now he fixes the robots that puts the caps on the toothpaste.
- 27:32It's that sort of situation, you know what I mean?
- 27:34Very nice.
- 27:35Very nice.
- 27:36You like that analogy.
- 27:37It's a good one.
- 27:37Yeah.
- 27:38Meanwhile, in, in other parts of STIs, Fiat is going back to its roots.
- 27:44Look at this thing, Tanya.
- 27:45Mm. This is the trees.
- 27:48How delightful.
- 27:49I mean, that looks like an ape.
- 27:50If I ever saw one, Italy was littered with these three wheeled tiny
- 27:55delivery trucks for the longest time.
- 27:58And then, then they were made by piaggio, which is the same people
- 28:01that the Vespa and all that stuff.
- 28:02So they had the ape.
- 28:04But they're bringing it back.
- 28:05It's very modern.
- 28:06That's pretty nice.
- 28:07And if it's an ev, it's perfect.
- 28:08It's pretty nice.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Could haul a decent amount of mulch in that truck too.
- 28:13You could actually, maybe more than that.
- 28:15Dodge we saw the other day more than a cyber truck.
- 28:20As we continue discussing lower Saxon A, it's not really BMW, so
- 28:25I figured you were okay with it.
- 28:26It's BM BMW adjacent because it's powered by BMW and it's got A BMW drivetrain.
- 28:31Yeah, so Morgan has revealed the new super sport 400.
- 28:36I've got a question.
- 28:38Uhhuh, who buys these?
- 28:40Right?
- 28:41They're just so ugly.
- 28:43I don't know if ugly is the right term.
- 28:45They're very classic.
- 28:46They have not deviated far from their original form, that's for sure.
- 28:51I think these are probably a hoot to drive, probably more fun to drive
- 28:54than a cater, because there's a little bit more substance to the car.
- 28:57But the problem is the price.
- 28:59I mean, you're getting kind of a really expensive Z four that's made of wood.
- 29:04I mean, that's for lightness and not rigidity.
- 29:07Yeah, because if any, whenever I think of wood.
- 29:11I think of lightness.
- 29:12Not say like an aluminum space frame or carbon fiber or anything like that.
- 29:17Why use aluminum when you can cut down tree?
- 29:20Yeah, we don't need to breathe.
- 29:23Well, that's okay because they won't sell too many of 'em at the
- 29:26starting price of just over $152,000.
- 29:30If you can fit the thing like a tight leather shoe, it is small.
- 29:34Well, you know who's already got an order for one?
- 29:36I guarantee it is.
- 29:37Uh, Richard Hammond.
- 29:39Well, yeah, because they fit the car around him, like he's one of
- 29:42the few people that can drive it.
- 29:43Yeah.
- 29:44Did you notice the wheels though?
- 29:46They look Porsche wheels.
- 29:47Oh yeah, I see.
- 29:47There you go, Tanya.
- 29:49Got it.
- 29:49They look like the roof wheels from the eighties.
- 29:51They're nice.
- 29:52Doesn't suit the body style though.
- 29:54It doesn't, but I don't know any wheels that would suit this body style.
- 29:57The body style doesn't suit the body style.
- 29:59Chariot wheels like on a Conestoga wagon, that might work.
- 30:02Exactly.
- 30:03This car needs to be pulled by a horse.
- 30:05Of course.
- 30:06You know, Brad, ask and thou Sht receive.
- 30:09We have not talked about General Motors in quite a long time, but I
- 30:12found a piece of General Motors news and it's yet another swift and well
- 30:17thought out decision on their part.
- 30:19The CT four and CT five black wings are going sad and you're
- 30:27a hundred percent right.
- 30:28And you know why it's sad?
- 30:29Because these are really the tail end of the manual transmission V eight,
- 30:36fire breathing sports saloons like we all loved and cherished over the years.
- 30:42And this is it.
- 30:43Once these are gone, what's left?
- 30:45What can you buy with a V eight with four doors and a stick shift?
- 30:49Uh, Dodge Dart.
- 30:50That's a four cylinder 16.
- 30:53I know, I know.
- 30:56So much like the jokes about Volkswagen is this because Cadillac has to
- 31:00pay for their failing F1 program.
- 31:02Because in my mind, these are the cars you keep around to try to get people
- 31:07excited about your racing program.
- 31:10I was just about to say like, and, and you don't have to have
- 31:13like a whole fleet of them.
- 31:14Like you don't need.
- 31:15Well, we'll, we'll take BMW for example, right?
- 31:17You don't need an, you don't need an M, everything in the fricking lineup, but
- 31:22one or two or even 3M cars to entice people to come in and they may not be
- 31:27able to afford an M five, but they can probably afford a regular five series,
- 31:33and it makes 'em feel just as cool.
- 31:35Like you need these cars to excite people about the brand.
- 31:39Volkswagen has killed off basically all of theirs.
- 31:42Yeah, they say nothing.
- 31:43Looks like GM is doing the same thing with Cadillac.
- 31:47But gm, at least for as far as I can see into the future, which is not
- 31:52very far, they have the Corvette, so they'll always have the Corvette that
- 31:56entices people to come back to gm.
- 31:58Well, let's put a pin in that Corvette thing for a minute.
- 32:01Oh, did you?
- 32:02Are you gonna, are we gonna talk about the recall?
- 32:04Isn't there a recall that just happened?
- 32:05Oh yeah, there is.
- 32:07Since you brought it up, we might as well go there.
- 32:09They have stopped production on the C eight Corvette.
- 32:13Why?
- 32:14What now?
- 32:15Do they light on fire again?
- 32:16When you fill them with fuel?
- 32:17It's something super silly.
- 32:19The hoods come open.
- 32:20No, it's, it is like silly as in like it's, if I remember correctly,
- 32:24I don't even think it really warrants a recall, but I could be wrong.
- 32:27Chevy Corvette under stop sale.
- 32:29Because software glitch might not tell drivers that their turn signals are out.
- 32:34Yes.
- 32:35What that is, who cares?
- 32:36That is such, yeah, that, who cares that?
- 32:38So let's take the BM BMW approach.
- 32:40Let's do the, who cares Your freaking turn signals out.
- 32:42So effing what?
- 32:44That was the first thing I thought when I saw this was like, do Corvette
- 32:47people even use their turn signals?
- 32:48Like Exactly.
- 32:50Sort of the Enzo Ferrari thing.
- 32:51Like what's behind you?
- 32:52Doesn't matter guys.
- 32:53I mean, we're doing like mock two.
- 32:54So who cares?
- 32:55Turns you getting the, the, the Corvette owners are doing sub speed limit.
- 33:00Well the ones I, the ones I always end up getting behind 'cause they're
- 33:04like 80 years old and they can finally afford their dream car.
- 33:07Those are the C seven drivers.
- 33:08Now you see 'cause C eight drivers.
- 33:11Those are the TED dbi million dollar man, hairy man, spaghetti wide, open collar.
- 33:17These are the C eight drivers.
- 33:18Okay, got it.
- 33:18Got.
- 33:19These are the guys at their peak earning potential.
- 33:21They wanted a sports car and couldn't buy a Porsche, so
- 33:24they bought a Corvette instead.
- 33:25That's the demographic, the the respectable Corvette owner,
- 33:29they're buying the old stuff.
- 33:30Got it, got it.
- 33:31I don't think c eights come with a pair of new balances.
- 33:34They might come with Jorts like, but they don't come with New Balance.
- 33:37They come with new balance driving shoes, new balance, lrs, what
- 33:41a terrible, terrible recall.
- 33:42That's the silliest C eight recall, yet it's had some dumb recalls,
- 33:46but this one takes the cake.
- 33:48I understand having a recall, but a, a stop sale, right.
- 33:52For a software update that you do over the air.
- 33:55It's important that your turn signals work, but they're brand new cars.
- 33:59Like, are the turn signals failing immediately?
- 34:02Like that should be like a. 10 years from now problem.
- 34:06Are they using Philips bulbs?
- 34:07I don't know if I've ever changed a turn signal, light bulb.
- 34:11I don't think I have either.
- 34:12You change headlight bulbs, brake light bulbs, but turn signal.
- 34:15Nah.
- 34:15You know what the problem is?
- 34:16This is some stupid government regulation that says it needs to
- 34:19blink about 5,000 times a second when your turn signal's out.
- 34:23So you know your turn signal's out.
- 34:25Although it's still blinking.
- 34:26So is it technically out, you know how that worked on the old cars?
- 34:30And to your point, why is this such a big thing?
- 34:32Because the little stock that activates the turn signal isn't
- 34:37actually connected to the circuitry for the turn signal anymore.
- 34:39Remember, this is a software problem.
- 34:42Mm-hmm.
- 34:42Because on the old cars when the bulb went out, as rare as that was Yeah, it
- 34:48was like tripper relay or something.
- 34:49Right.
- 34:49And it wasn't getting, it wasn't getting enough circuitry or something.
- 34:52It shorts the circuit and causes the relay to start opening and closing really fast.
- 34:56Yeah.
- 34:56'cause it was all what?
- 34:57Mechanical.
- 34:59Gee, imagine that.
- 35:01Yeah.
- 35:01Yeah.
- 35:02Shocker.
- 35:03Well, Brad, I wanna go back to something you said before about
- 35:05the badge engineering at BMW.
- 35:07As we know over the last decade, they are infamous for slapping an
- 35:10M badge on just about anything.
- 35:13Got that?
- 35:14MI three.
- 35:15Hmm?
- 35:16Yeah.
- 35:17Woo.
- 35:18This one just made me shake my head.
- 35:20Tanya and I actually talked about this off camera.
- 35:23We've been very excited about all the gazoo racing products from Toyota
- 35:27gr, this GR jars, gr supra, GR 86.
- 35:31Gr gr.
- 35:32They're everywhere.
- 35:32It's awesome.
- 35:33Even the Haas GR Toyota team, right?
- 35:36I mean now this season, but because they enthusiast who is at the helm
- 35:41of Toyota is now left and it's in charge of by a bean counter.
- 35:44They have taken a page from their partnership with BMW.
- 35:48'cause let's not forget that the Supra was a Z four, the
- 35:51Supra, as we like to call it.
- 35:53So now Toyota is slapping GR badges on stuff.
- 35:57And I'm gonna use the word stuff 'cause I don't wanna say anything too
- 36:00bad, but I'll just say this Toyota's introducing the RAV4 GR sports garbage.
- 36:10Is that what GR is short for now?
- 36:12Garbage.
- 36:13So I will say this is not new territory for Toyota because they've
- 36:18been doing it in the US for years.
- 36:21TRD with Lexus and they've got the F sport, which is not an F. So
- 36:26they've been doing it for a while now it's just kind of trickled
- 36:29down into the normal Toyota brand.
- 36:32All I'm gonna say is there is nothing sport or GR about this RAV4.
- 36:36The design alone is pretty terrible looking.
- 36:39It reminds me of that Bentley we talked about earlier.
- 36:41It's just awful.
- 36:42But hey, it's got little red stitching in the seats GR right there.
- 36:46So you're paying for an appearance package pretty much like the BMWs.
- 36:51It's just an appearance but slap some badges on it.
- 36:53It's a m now.
- 36:54Terrible.
- 36:55Toyota, you make me sad.
- 36:57You gotta do better.
- 36:59I got click baited this month guys.
- 37:02I got really excited.
- 37:03I read the headline from Car Scoops, pinine Farina, who has been, by
- 37:07the way, booted from Ferrari.
- 37:08They're no longer designing Ferrari.
- 37:10That's why I got excited about this.
- 37:11Pinine Farina has a Honda NSX reboot and I was like, Ooh, ooh, this is gonna be good.
- 37:18Like they're gonna get their revenge on Ferrari.
- 37:21You know, as we joke that a lot of the Ferrari look like an NSX, but
- 37:25unfortunately this is a rest mod.
- 37:28Mm-hmm.
- 37:29Body kit by PanIN Farina.
- 37:31I mean it looks good, don't get me wrong.
- 37:33'cause the classic NSX looks good and it's still a good looking cart
- 37:37to this day, but what a bummer.
- 37:40I mean, it looks better than the The real in SX they came up with.
- 37:43Yes.
- 37:43I love the wide bodiness to it.
- 37:45Yeah, that's hot.
- 37:47The red one.
- 37:48I would drive that it looks more Ferrari than a Ferrari.
- 37:51If you think about it.
- 37:52And it's got pop-up headlights.
- 37:54How can you go wrong with pop-up headlights?
- 37:55That is amazing.
- 37:57Yes.
- 37:58But we're not getting a new NSX.
- 38:00However, comma, if this partnership were to continue somehow between Penny and
- 38:06Farina and Honda, that would be epic.
- 38:10The engines are still gonna be anemic, but the designs are gonna be amazing.
- 38:14Let's dog ear this a little bit.
- 38:16Come back to it and see if anything else progresses.
- 38:18Especially since Honda and Sony have sort of parted ways and dissolved
- 38:22the whole Alea thing, maybe they can concentrate on some good looking cars
- 38:26instead of the whatever that was.
- 38:28All right.
- 38:28Well, Kia decided apparently to make the cyber truck better looking.
- 38:33I don't understand because they said it's a stinger, and I'm like, I don't
- 38:36remember the stinger looking like this.
- 38:39It did not.
- 38:40This looks like a cyber truck.
- 38:41Am I wrong?
- 38:42Because like the Kia Stinger admittedly wasn't a bad looking sedan.
- 38:47It looks like an A seven to me.
- 38:48I liked it a lot.
- 38:49Did you see the interior shot?
- 38:51That is like minority report?
- 38:53Total recall.
- 38:55Murder.
- 38:55Death Kill murder.
- 38:56Death kill.
- 38:57Yeah.
- 38:57It's like all the sci-fi films sprawled into one.
- 39:00I wanna say this is terrible, but from every angle it's better
- 39:04looking than a cyber truck.
- 39:05What is that weird joystick thing in the gold seat?
- 39:09I thought it was a cup holder.
- 39:10At first.
- 39:10I thought that was a Starbucks cup or a stand.
- 39:12Is that a steering wheel or a Lego brick?
- 39:15Maybe it drives itself.
- 39:16Is that something to sit on?
- 39:18Well, I don't get it.
- 39:19Again, the cyber truck is the bottom of the barrel.
- 39:23If that's at the bar, then I mean, don't take much.
- 39:28And guess what?
- 39:29It does not look good in Kelly Green.
- 39:33That is not a favorable wrap.
- 39:35Color choice?
- 39:36Nope.
- 39:37Oh, what's this?
- 39:38Somebody added an, what's this?
- 39:40What's this?
- 39:41Someone added an article so much like Honda.
- 39:44Is doing with heritage parts.
- 39:47Now, apparently Nissan will also be having a program for heritage parts
- 39:52only if you own an Ultima, right?
- 39:54Well,
- 39:58I mean Ultimas are all original parts.
- 40:01They don't ever change 'em.
- 40:02They seem to indicate for the Z cars.
- 40:06Oh, okay.
- 40:07I'm glad you specified.
- 40:08You're probably not getting some heritage parts for your 1990 Altima.
- 40:13There's no Altima Z Sport.
- 40:16Brad, you bring up a very valid point.
- 40:17What if NI Nissan did that like a Nismo sport?
- 40:21SMOs Ultima.
- 40:26An an Ultima.
- 40:27That'd be terrible.
- 40:28I mean, good for them.
- 40:29More companies need to do this because plenty of enthusiasts have
- 40:33old cars, and as we've learned with our Ford project, which isn't that
- 40:38old, it's extremely difficult to get stuff and it's like it shouldn't be.
- 40:41I mean, we're very blessed in the Volkswagen community that there's a huge
- 40:45aftermarket support for all the old cars, but I feel for everybody else, if you
- 40:49don't have that network and you don't have that import overnight from Japan
- 40:53thing going on, it's gotta be extremely hard to get stuff done, which is why you
- 40:57never see any of these cars on the road.
- 41:06Well, switching to EVs and concept cars, Tanya,
- 41:12they finally got the smart right?
- 41:17I mean, these cloth wheels, I don't understand.
- 41:21I've never seen white tires before.
- 41:24They won't be white for long.
- 41:26What is with these front ends?
- 41:27This is the third car with this thing that looks like, you remember those
- 41:31mats like our grandparents would put in the bathtub so you wouldn't slip.
- 41:35You know those things for like the seventies, like
- 41:36that's what that looks like.
- 41:38You know what that feels like?
- 41:39You don't even have to touch it.
- 41:41You know what it feels like?
- 41:42I don't think this feels like that.
- 41:44However, it looks like a suitcase.
- 41:47You know the problem is you don't need a grill.
- 41:51So what do you do with that space?
- 41:53And I guess there's trying to be creative with a pattern of.
- 41:58Plus signs, negative signs and circles.
- 42:02All the mathematical operations you can think of like what is this?
- 42:06Which the front view has a pound sign and a two in the little, I guess those
- 42:10are lights of some sort in the grill.
- 42:13That's 'cause it's the four two, hashtag four two.
- 42:16Yeah.
- 42:16Much like the mini, they did not deviate too far from its roots.
- 42:21So it's, you look at it and go, that's a smart, I mean the
- 42:24wheels and the tires are bizarre.
- 42:26I mean, the thing is two feet long, how much can you
- 42:31deviate from the spirit of it?
- 42:33True.
- 42:34It is a roller skate.
- 42:35Here's the shocking part, and maybe it's not 186 mile range on battery.
- 42:41Is that not enough or is that just right for its size?
- 42:45Well, I think it's right for its size.
- 42:46I don't know anybody that would be taking a road trip in a car this size.
- 42:49And it's gonna be in the UK and Europe and everything.
- 42:52It's, no, you're gonna take that back because I posted on Discord.
- 42:56I saw a gentleman driving around the city this month in a Braas Smart, which I had
- 43:01to like do a 10 take not a triple take.
- 43:04I did like a 10 take.
- 43:05You were in the city.
- 43:06He wasn't driving down the coast.
- 43:09Yeah.
- 43:09You didn't see 'em on 95.
- 43:11City miles are like dog years.
- 43:14Okay.
- 43:14Like how many country miles are equal to a city mile?
- 43:17You know what I'm saying?
- 43:17Like it's, it's rough and tumble out there.
- 43:19Uh, it's an excursion.
- 43:22That comparison makes no sense.
- 43:26I don't know.
- 43:26I feel like an electric smart should do like 500 miles
- 43:29before it needs to be charged.
- 43:31Where are they gonna put all the batteries?
- 43:32Exactly.
- 43:33You think that?
- 43:34'cause you go, oh, it's so small it power to wait.
- 43:36It should be going forever.
- 43:37But the problem is it's so small.
- 43:39You can fit like one Duracell battery in it double or triple A.
- 43:43When I think of a smart car, yes.
- 43:45I think it should go like, sure.
- 43:48To use Eric's analogy or Eric's thought it should go 500 miles.
- 43:51Yeah, you should be able to charge it off of Mofi on your phone.
- 43:55Yes, a hundred percent.
- 43:56If you could fit a battery on that, that could do.
- 43:59500 miles, then we should be getting way better mileage out of bigger cars.
- 44:05But we're not, because I think it's all part of the game.
- 44:08Or the farce delusion.
- 44:10Thank you.
- 44:11It all, it all aids.
- 44:12The uh, the conflict, the excursion.
- 44:14My new favorite.
- 44:15It's my word of the month excursion liberation.
- 44:19I'm talking about the Ford.
- 44:20Isn't that what you're talking about?
- 44:21Oh, of course.
- 44:22Always.
- 44:31Well, Brad, let's switch to Lost and found your favorite part of the drive
- 44:34through where we scour the internet and call up Chuck led duck at Gray
- 44:38Chevrolet to see if he's got anything on the lot that we want to buy.
- 44:42And I found a car for Tanya.
- 44:44Uh oh.
- 44:44Shall I read the stats?
- 44:47Limited production only 250 units worldwide.
- 44:51This was a Japanese allocation with left hand drive.
- 44:5545 units were sent to Japan.
- 44:58It's serial number 1 74 of two 50.
- 45:01Its condition is non-smoking and it's completely stock and
- 45:04its interior and exterior.
- 45:07Its exclusive.
- 45:08Features include RO orange leather, front bucket seats, 18 inch oz,
- 45:12magnesium wheels, and a Remus dual exhaust system, which I don't think
- 45:17was stock on this particular car.
- 45:19What am I talking about?
- 45:20The 3.2 liter VR six powered Beetle RSI.
- 45:25I hope Tanya has not looked at it to see the cost yet.
- 45:28Oh, I know the cost.
- 45:30So why don't we refresh people and what that cost is.
- 45:33What do we think this should cost?
- 45:36What would you be willing to pay for a Beatle RSI?
- 45:39And please note that in the picture, there's a black magic R 32 behind it.
- 45:45It's your old black magic R. That's probably where it ended up.
- 45:47Yeah, it was sent to Japan.
- 45:49Don't even get me started.
- 45:50All right, Tanya, what would you pay for an RSI Beetle?
- 45:53What would I pay?
- 45:55That's a very good question.
- 45:57Don't let it weigh you down.
- 45:58Like other purchases weigh you down.
- 45:59Just be like, I would pay if I had a million dollars and
- 46:02I don't care, I would pay.
- 46:04Blah.
- 46:05What would you pay?
- 46:05Well, if I had a million dollars and I didn't care,
- 46:07then I could just buy this one.
- 46:09Okay.
- 46:09But I'm just saying like, I'm trying to alleviate the pressure where you're
- 46:14like, oh, I don't wanna pay too much and I don't wanna, I don't wanna
- 46:16underpay just like, put out a number.
- 46:18Like what do you think this car is worth to you?
- 46:20$30,000. 30. Wow.
- 46:22You're so cheap.
- 46:24I know.
- 46:24That's why I was like, hesitating.
- 46:26I was to say 50.
- 46:28I was, I, I was in the 50 to 60 range.
- 46:30Yeah.
- 46:30'cause these are super rare, considered maybe 45.
- 46:34Oh my god.
- 46:36So cheap.
- 46:37Okay.
- 46:38We do all these things to it, and then there's still that steering
- 46:41wheel, but it's entirely stock.
- 46:44It's allegedly stocked.
- 46:45That Remus exhaust did not come from Volkswagen.
- 46:47I'm just pointing out allegedly stock.
- 46:49Did they come with orange Recaro bucket seats?
- 46:52I don't remember what the RSIs came with.
- 46:55Those are heinous though.
- 46:57But yes, it still has like the factory stupid steering wheel that
- 47:00was in your, that's in your beetle.
- 47:02Those are the seats I need in my car.
- 47:04I mean, maybe they came like this, we wouldn't know.
- 47:06They didn't sell 'em here.
- 47:07No they did not.
- 47:08Would I pay $160,000 for it?
- 47:12No.
- 47:13If I had a million dollars, then well see.
- 47:15If I won the lottery, I would buy you this.
- 47:17I wouldn't have told you that I bought it for you.
- 47:19I would just have it delivered to your house and then I wouldn't
- 47:22give you the keys for a while.
- 47:23Just like tease you that.
- 47:25It's like sitting in your driveway.
- 47:27These are super cool.
- 47:30I mean, I would want one, it's really a shame.
- 47:32Nobody created an authentic body kit where you could build one, granted be front
- 47:38wheel drive, or if you want to do all the work to the drive train to put the all
- 47:41wheel drive in there, it's not a big deal.
- 47:43You get it from a tt.
- 47:44I was just about to say like what would be more expensive buying this
- 47:47car at 160 or building one yourself?
- 47:50Buying this car for 160?
- 47:52Yeah, it's probably cheaper to build one.
- 47:54I don't know that you could build it exactly like this one.
- 47:58Well, there was that one that we saw.
- 47:59It was the HPA one that sold on bring a trailer and that was under a hundred
- 48:04thousand so that you would've had money to spare and they did build one.
- 48:08I mean, I really also don't like this interior.
- 48:10If that's actually how it came, it would've been cool if it was blue.
- 48:14Did they ever, did they come in any other color other than silver?
- 48:16No, I think I've only seen them in silver.
- 48:17I don't only ever seen them silver.
- 48:19Yeah.
- 48:19The racing ones came in all sorts of funky colors, orange and blue, and like all the,
- 48:24the Beetle Cup series ones that they used.
- 48:26So what I would buy for going down a rabbit hole here, I would save my 160,000
- 48:32from this and I would buy that Volkswagen, GTI that I think it was oh 34 built that
- 48:39had a 2.7 twin turbo V six in the back.
- 48:43Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
- 48:45That car was.
- 48:47Maze balls.
- 48:48I would buy that.
- 48:49It was, it sold, you know, a few years ago or several years ago.
- 48:52I can't remember what it sold for, but that car was awesome.
- 48:55They put a lot of time and customization into that.
- 48:57I have to go back for a second before we move on to this 3 56 thing, because the
- 49:01comments of some things are so funny.
- 49:04The amount of people that don't understand this car and why
- 49:06it is so expensive is insane.
- 49:08You are insane.
- 49:12I understand what this car is because I have the front wheel drive
- 49:15version of it without the VR six.
- 49:18This is the same.
- 49:19Same but different thing.
- 49:21I mean, yes, it's badass.
- 49:23And had they only sold these here, you still wouldn't be able to afford it.
- 49:28End of the day it's, it's 25-year-old beetle.
- 49:31Yeah, I mean, so instead, let's talk about 65-year-old beetle.
- 49:37Let's talk about three pieces.
- 49:38There you go.
- 49:39Let's back off of this $160,000 number.
- 49:42Let's say you had $160,000 to spend.
- 49:45Would you spend it on an RSI Beetle?
- 49:49No.
- 49:49Or would you buy a 3 56?
- 49:52Because that's what Manny from PCA longtime friend of the show
- 49:56is basically espousing in his latest blog post on pca.org.
- 50:00Oh, no, I would, I was gonna say I was gonna buy A A MG Mercedes gt.
- 50:06I was just about to say, you wanna say A-M-G-G-T?
- 50:09Yes.
- 50:09But if we're comparing beetle shaped vehicles Oh.
- 50:13I didn't know that that was a boundary to the conversation.
- 50:16It is now.
- 50:18Tanya would buy 16 Turbo butyl.
- 50:21They make one good one out of all 16.
- 50:24Alright, so getting back to it, would you spend 160,000 on RSI?
- 50:28We already know you'd buy Mercedes, which is more akin to the 9 28 or 3 56
- 50:33because I've said for a long time the 3 56 market is ripe for the picking because
- 50:38there's too many people sacrificing nine elevens to go build singers.
- 50:42Or they're holding onto their nine elevens and they've gone through the roof and
- 50:45these 3 56 s are left behind unloved.
- 50:48Would I buy that for $160,000?
- 50:52Or the Beetle for $160,000?
- 50:543 56. Not a Beetle Say what?
- 50:593 56? Not a beetle.
- 51:01No, no, no.
- 51:01I thought you said the choice.
- 51:03The question is, would I buy this RSI for $160,000 or this 3 56 for the
- 51:07same money and 3 56 might cost less.
- 51:10I mean, you're getting a classic Porsche for less than that Beetle.
- 51:14And after I've spanked it off the line, hey, now they make 75 horsepower.
- 51:20Okay.
- 51:20I mean, I would have, I would buy the RSI.
- 51:24I think I would love to have a 3 56 like I've read this
- 51:27article, and Manny is not wrong.
- 51:29These cars are gonna have a second coming.
- 51:33They're gonna have a whole new fellowship and a whole new following.
- 51:36I think they're the place that if you're looking to buy a Porsche,
- 51:39especially an air cold Porsche.
- 51:41You should invest your money in 3 56 s. How much is a 3 56 running right now?
- 51:47He doesn't mention it in the article.
- 51:50Newtown Square, wherever that is, has a used 77,000 mile 1962
- 51:54Porsche 3 56 BT six 1600 Super for the low low price of 229 9 9 5.
- 52:00Is that all?
- 52:02You could also get a 1959 Porsche 3 56 used with 4,000 miles on eBay for $80,000.
- 52:08So the pendulum swings pretty far there.
- 52:11Brad.
- 52:11Ooh, here you go.
- 52:13A one scale, one Porsche, 3 56 speedster wooden display model.
- 52:20Ah, Uhhuh.
- 52:22If you want to go the Morgan route, Uhhuh is, uh.
- 52:26Sold for 15,000.
- 52:27Okay.
- 52:28This is a nice clean 1 56 speed.
- 52:32Well, it's a speedster replica.
- 52:34I'd take a replica.
- 52:3644 9. That's not bad.
- 52:38That's not bad.
- 52:3945,000 for a classic Porsche.
- 52:43That is not bad.
- 52:44That is not bad.
- 52:45However, dollar for dollar.
- 52:48I mean, that would be, well, here you go.
- 52:51Porsche 3 56, speedster styled, go-kart.
- 52:54Oh, stop.
- 52:55Stop.
- 52:5680, 80, $200. Uh, it's another replica.
- 53:00You could get a 3 56, a replica for 35 9.
- 53:04I am good with replicas too.
- 53:05In the great state of Michigan.
- 53:07Are the replicas just built on beetles?
- 53:09Yes.
- 53:10Okay.
- 53:10Just like the Beck Spiders and all those other things out there.
- 53:13Well, all right.
- 53:14Well, I haven't convinced you to buy a 3 56.
- 53:16Well, maybe I can convince you to buy this uncool wall nominee.
- 53:21It's been a minute.
- 53:22I found one.
- 53:26The fudge is this.
- 53:28This is a Homebrew Chevy Trailblazer convertible, and as the headline
- 53:34reads, it is the mullet of cars.
- 53:36Dang.
- 53:37It is business in the front, already in the back for sale at a
- 53:40Nissan dealership of all places.
- 53:43Somebody traded this in or across Cabrio Lake.
- 53:49You were gonna say Ultima?
- 53:50I was, but I I beat you.
- 53:52No.
- 53:52A, a Murano Cross.
- 53:54Cabrio Lake.
- 53:54They were like, you know what?
- 53:56This one is it, but that one?
- 53:57Yeah.
- 53:58What was wrong with this trailblazer?
- 54:00That somebody said, you know what, we gotta cut the roof
- 54:03off and make it a convertible.
- 54:04They're friends with Daniel.
- 54:05Well, we'll get to one of those in a minute.
- 54:08Don't stray too far from that thought.
- 54:10But here's what gets me, right?
- 54:11So the structural rigidity of a trailblazer is, uh, partially where
- 54:16the doors, well in its roof structure 'cause it's built like a box.
- 54:20So how much does this flex when it goes down the road, you're
- 54:25assuming it goes down the road.
- 54:26Well that's true too.
- 54:28But more importantly, if you were gonna spend the time and the money
- 54:32to do this, why not just buy an SSR?
- 54:35Because then it doesn't run on that sweet, sweet straight six.
- 54:39Yeah, right.
- 54:39It's not even an ss it's not even a V eight in this.
- 54:43This is terrible.
- 54:44Yeah, it's got that 4.2 liter in line six mm You can feel those 275 ponies.
- 54:52Yeah, but look how much less it weighs now that it has no glass.
- 54:55Sure.
- 54:56Actually someone even put in here small, like they mentioned the SSR in here.
- 55:00So that's what I'm saying, man, that's ugh.
- 55:02The fakes people do is absolutely just incredible.
- 55:06So yeah, this one's going up on the uncool wall so you can vote on it
- 55:09with like 90 other cars that are on the uncool wall at this point.
- 55:14Well, speaking of things that are uncool, we would be remiss if we
- 55:19didn't look at this picture of Elon.
- 55:23Look at this picture of Elon.
- 55:24What a nerd this was back in the early days of the Roadster, and the
- 55:27reason I bring this up is the Roadster is back in the conversation again.
- 55:32How are the profits up?
- 55:33I don't know.
- 55:34There's tons of cyber trucks sitting around on lots being unsold.
- 55:38Mm. Maybe selling more carbon credits.
- 55:39Again, the reason I bring this up, and again, it has been in multiple feeds and
- 55:43uh, you know, some new renderings of the Roadster and whatnot, all AI generated.
- 55:48But Musk is quoted as saying the Roadster will be Tesla's last manually driven car.
- 55:54He also claims Tesla's aspirational goal of building the last.
- 55:59Best driver's car.
- 56:01I think Porsche's got something to say about that.
- 56:03This is a non story Moving on.
- 56:05Complete clickbait.
- 56:06I mean the Roadster is never gonna happen.
- 56:08We've been talking about the Roadster since 2017.
- 56:12Like it predates the show.
- 56:14They've been teasing with the lasers and the this and the that,
- 56:18and it's gonna do zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds with the dual cannons.
- 56:22And Bobby Parks came on talking about it's gonna be the next hit.
- 56:25Dragster, blah, blah.
- 56:26I mean, it is the biggest vaporware smoke and mirrors car ever.
- 56:31And we thought the cyber truck was gonna be like that too.
- 56:34Like they were never gonna make it.
- 56:35And then they finally made that.
- 56:37So maybe, maybe this just, we haven't waited long enough.
- 56:41Right?
- 56:412027 will be 10 years that we've been talking about the delayed
- 56:46production of the Tesla Roadster.
- 56:48Alright, so question time.
- 56:51Oh boy.
- 56:51What happens first?
- 56:53The Tesla Roadster goes into production, or Volkswagen writes the ship.
- 56:59Oh, dude.
- 57:01I don't know if that can be answered.
- 57:02That might be like the secret of the universe.
- 57:05I don't know that we can answer that question.
- 57:07That's wow, that that dude, I'm having a, uh, existential crisis
- 57:11now trying to solve that problem.
- 57:13It's like that meme with the woman in the middle of the screen
- 57:15with all the math equations going around her head and everything.
- 57:18It's exactly what's going on in your head right now.
- 57:20Pretty much.
- 57:21Pretty much.
- 57:26Well, let's move to the segment that has changed more times than you've
- 57:29changed your socks this month.
- 57:31Let's go to seriously, what could go wrong where we get to ask Tanya the same
- 57:35question we've asked her for six months.
- 57:37Have you watched the F1 movie?
- 57:39Well, what, before you answer that, our listeners will have to tune in
- 57:45for the next Formula Fanatics episode.
- 57:47We will answer that question.
- 57:49So let's put a pin in.
- 57:50For a moment.
- 57:54How do you keep an idiot in suspense?
- 57:56I'll tell you tomorrow,
- 58:00but seriously though, what could go wrong?
- 58:03This one came across my desk also from the Society of Automotive Historians,
- 58:07so I'm just gonna sort of read this in.
- 58:09In summary, there's a TV journalist based in New York that is currently
- 58:12developing a documentary on a sport from the early 19 hundreds known as.
- 58:19Auto polo.
- 58:21Ooh, it is a wonderfully chaotic motorsport.
- 58:24The tour through Madison Square Garden and Coney Island in the 1910s and twenties
- 58:28before repair bills finally killed it.
- 58:32Take a look at, this is the craziest thing I have ever seen.
- 58:36It reminds me of the auto football that top gear played, but mental
- 58:42with more, more car around.
- 58:43No, this is like the other thing.
- 58:45The chariots with the motorcycles where it's like you have the motorcycles in
- 58:49front and you're doing like chariots of fire, but look at some of these wrecks.
- 58:53These guys are being ejected, but then there's also, what do you wanna call him?
- 58:57The mechanic, like he's leaning out over the car while the other car's going by.
- 59:01They've got these clubs in their hand trying to hit the ball.
- 59:04Well, those are the polo clubs.
- 59:05This is like a top gear episode.
- 59:07This is where they got it from.
- 59:08Look at the one as you get down maybe three quarters away, where the guy
- 59:12is leaning out the rear passenger.
- 59:14He has what looks like, I don't know, a snowshoe and
- 59:17he's hitting an oversized ball.
- 59:19You see this?
- 59:20This is the most buck wild thing I've ever seen.
- 59:23It looks like a Morgan Wonder how people died doing this.
- 59:25There's so many death in Motorsport because of this stuff.
- 59:30Like this is why not Formula One.
- 59:34It's this.
- 59:35How many rollovers?
- 59:36Absolutely insane.
- 59:38That was Darwinism.
- 59:39They thought it was fun.
- 59:41You say it's Darwinism.
- 59:42This is sport.
- 59:44This is also the meme where it's like, this is why men don't live long.
- 59:48God bless.
- 59:50Absolutely dumb ways to die.
- 59:53Well, finally, Brad, you sort of buried the lead earlier
- 59:56talking about mountain man.
- 59:58Dan, going back to our sort of showcase, this gentleman has
- 1:00:02solved the world's gas problem.
- 1:00:04He built a square body Chevy that runs on would
- 1:00:16look at this thing.
- 1:00:19I'm gonna say that again.
- 1:00:20It runs on wood.
- 1:00:23Brad, your face says it all,
- 1:00:27but it says that it's covered 60,000 miles.
- 1:00:30That's impressive.
- 1:00:31That was be before the wood.
- 1:00:36It took 20 years to build this thing.
- 1:00:39It was built for enjoyment, not as an energy solution.
- 1:00:43I'm gonna say bull.
- 1:00:44I've heard Dan talk about his hydroelectric plant based off of creek.
- 1:00:49This is pure trying to beat the man, beat the system, and not pay the gas bills.
- 1:00:56The V eight pulls as if it runs on gasoline.
- 1:01:00'cause the best part, it takes five to 10 minutes to get started up.
- 1:01:09Probably makes a mean wood fire pizza.
- 1:01:12Oh my God.
- 1:01:13It also takes 81 pounds of wood to go 60 miles.
- 1:01:17Yes.
- 1:01:17That's a lot of wood.
- 1:01:18And I love how the article says it's a small inconvenience so it can go
- 1:01:2360 miles on 81 pounds of wood, but you have to feed it every 43 miles.
- 1:01:30So you can't even do the whole 60 miles.
- 1:01:33'cause you have to keep the fire going.
- 1:01:37But I could get to work.
- 1:01:38On one wood fill.
- 1:01:40That's when you get your brother Darrell and your other brother Darrell
- 1:01:43up there feeding it and stoking it as you're driving down the road.
- 1:01:47Oh, we have to stay tuned because there's going to be a video later to
- 1:01:52document this Chevy's participation in a one mile speed event.
- 1:01:57Is this whistling diesel.
- 1:01:59This is some mountain man engineering right here.
- 1:02:02This, this is Daniel looking around his property thinking, you know what?
- 1:02:07I got a lot of, I got a lot of wood up here.
- 1:02:11How am I gonna get rid all this wood?
- 1:02:14I got a lot of wood and a lot of cars.
- 1:02:18Hmm.
- 1:02:18But then you gotta burn different woods, right?
- 1:02:20I wonder if cherry wood gets you a couple extra miles versus,
- 1:02:23you know, burning an oak.
- 1:02:25Let's think about this.
- 1:02:26He's got the cover on.
- 1:02:28Well, no, he doesn't have a cover on the back.
- 1:02:30So you got the bed of the truck, so that's good.
- 1:02:33'cause you can carry all your fuel in the bed of the truck.
- 1:02:37Then when you pull over, you put it in the pot, burn it.
- 1:02:40I guess you can't use this in the rain
- 1:02:46because last I checked, what wood doesn't burn very well.
- 1:02:50You know, engines don't burn water either.
- 1:02:52Seeing this gives me a really good idea.
- 1:02:54So we take this idea, but we refine it.
- 1:02:57Instead of wood, we burn like a liquid or something that
- 1:03:01like burns really efficiently.
- 1:03:03Oh.
- 1:03:03Instead of storing it in the bed of the truck, we put it in a tank
- 1:03:08and we, we burn it that way and it gets pumped through the tank.
- 1:03:13We can call it fuel.
- 1:03:13Well hold on a second.
- 1:03:14And you use a fuel pump to get it outta the tank.
- 1:03:18That's some Star Trek stuff, man.
- 1:03:21That is, no, you know what would be interesting?
- 1:03:24We need to do the math on the price of a quart of wood equivalency.
- 1:03:30The quart of wood per gallon to fuel per gas.
- 1:03:32Like is this really, it's more expensive.
- 1:03:36Of course.
- 1:03:37It's like $600 a cord.
- 1:03:39How much gas are you buying?
- 1:03:41Would it be more powerful and more efficient if you douse the
- 1:03:45wood and like lighter fluid?
- 1:03:46No, it would burn faster.
- 1:03:48So here's the other problem, okay.
- 1:03:50To make those wood chips, he's gotta burn diesel to run his chipper at $6
- 1:03:55a gallon to make fuel for the truck.
- 1:03:57It doesn't work.
- 1:03:58He's using coal.
- 1:04:01It just.
- 1:04:03See you read my mind because that's the next logical conclusion
- 1:04:06to Tanya's problem, which is because the wood chips get wet.
- 1:04:10Well, why don't I use the wood chips in a device where I can use
- 1:04:14it to heat something else and maybe make, oh, I don't know, steam.
- 1:04:19Steam Powers next watch.
- 1:04:21Revolutionary idea.
- 1:04:23We have gone full circle.
- 1:04:25The internet still gives me hope.
- 1:04:27It's stuff like this.
- 1:04:28For what?
- 1:04:29That I can find something actually entertaining.
- 1:04:32So you tell me, this guy's in Florida.
- 1:04:34No.
- 1:04:35You know what it's said?
- 1:04:36It was a finish.
- 1:04:37A Finnish Chevy truck.
- 1:04:39So do they mean like this is in Finland?
- 1:04:42Yeah, it has a European license plate.
- 1:04:44I just noticed that.
- 1:04:44It's got the long, skinny one.
- 1:04:46There you go.
- 1:04:47I love that giant radiator.
- 1:04:48What is Daniel in Finnish?
- 1:04:50We need to convert his name.
- 1:04:51I think Daniel is universal.
- 1:04:53Oh, okay.
- 1:04:54He's not a Bjorn.
- 1:04:55He's.
- 1:04:57All right, if that wasn't enough, let's move on to rich people things.
- 1:05:04This is the, the opposite of rich people things.
- 1:05:08Well, I have just an announcement more than anything else, not anything to
- 1:05:11share on the rich people thing side.
- 1:05:13I just want to invite everybody to come join us July 10th through the
- 1:05:1712th in South Bend, Indiana for the Automotive History Live conference.
- 1:05:23That'll be in conjunction with the concourses at kol, which
- 1:05:27is operated and sponsored by the Studebaker National Museum.
- 1:05:30So you get to meet folks from Studebaker, the Society of Automotive Historians, as
- 1:05:34well as Don from Garage Style Magazine, and you'll see William Big Money Ross,
- 1:05:39John Summers, the motoring historian, and yours truly on stage giving a
- 1:05:44presentation about the Bianco Spial.
- 1:05:46So if you haven't listened to those podcast episodes,
- 1:05:48go back and jump in on those.
- 1:05:49But if you can't make it to South Bend for that week in July, that's okay.
- 1:05:54We'll be live streaming the event.
- 1:05:55From our Twitch feed on Twitch tv, grand Touring Motorsports.
- 1:05:59So more details to come.
- 1:06:01So stay tuned to the drive-through and our digital magazine for those updates.
- 1:06:06And don't forget, if you're looking for that extra special automobile to
- 1:06:09complete your garage office den or mancave, be sure to check out garage
- 1:06:13style magazine.com for a list of upcoming auctions and events, along with a curated
- 1:06:17list of items going up for sale all over the country, because after all,
- 1:06:21what doesn't belong in your garage.
- 1:06:24Thanks for that, Brad.
- 1:06:25And now we'll switch gears and talk about are you faster than an interceptor?
- 1:06:44This is a real concern.
- 1:06:45I've seen multiple posts about this.
- 1:06:47I don't know how many of 'em are real, but this one came from life in Florida.
- 1:06:51They're gonna start using drones to catch speeders on the highway.
- 1:06:54I mean, that sucks.
- 1:06:56Right.
- 1:06:56There's always those signs on the road that say, enforced by air or
- 1:07:01something, and it's like, what?
- 1:07:02Really?
- 1:07:03Like Yeah.
- 1:07:04Yeah.
- 1:07:04Speed checked by aircraft or whatever it is.
- 1:07:06Yeah.
- 1:07:07What plane is flying overhead or helicopter clocking someone?
- 1:07:11Nobody, I've never seen it, but this is actually sadly ingenious.
- 1:07:17It is.
- 1:07:17But these drones have a short lifespan though.
- 1:07:19Especially these quad rotor ones where they, they use a lot of energy.
- 1:07:22They're gonna nab somebody, but they're not gonna nab everybody.
- 1:07:26You know?
- 1:07:26It would probably be better if it ran on wood.
- 1:07:29Oh.
- 1:07:29Oh geez.
- 1:07:33I love that.
- 1:07:33It shows, it displays your speed.
- 1:07:36It would be really cool if it announced it like in cars three,
- 1:07:40ah, where they're on the beach and there's, it's announcing your speed.
- 1:07:44It's like, Jarvis, what is my speed?
- 1:07:4575 miles an hour, 76 miles an hour, 80 miles an hour, 85 miles an hour.
- 1:07:50I don't know like that.
- 1:07:51That's definitely an AI generated picture.
- 1:07:54But the point is this Skynet police state future that we're creating
- 1:07:59for ourselves, it's scary, right?
- 1:08:01I mean, it takes all the joy out of driving, and I'm not saying that you
- 1:08:04should be out there breaking the law and, and speeding and stuff like that.
- 1:08:08I mean, it takes the fun out of cops and robbers I guess a little bit.
- 1:08:11You know, are you faster than an interceptor at its core?
- 1:08:13But drones, that's a scary post-apocalyptic future that
- 1:08:17we're talking about there.
- 1:08:18It's the future, unfortunately.
- 1:08:21So I don't like it.
- 1:08:23But you know what, unfortunately we're all gonna have to get
- 1:08:26used to this kind of stuff.
- 1:08:28Uh, but you know, the side effect is gonna be in Florida, the reports are gonna be
- 1:08:32drunken man with alligator and passenger seat shoots down drone with 30 cal Cannon.
- 1:08:38You know what I mean?
- 1:08:38Like it's gonna be like skeet shooting.
- 1:08:40It'll be the next great sport is to get out in your wood powered square body and
- 1:08:45shoot down drones at 70 miles an hour.
- 1:08:47That'll be the plus side to this.
- 1:08:51It's gonna happen wherever there is drone, there is counter drone.
- 1:08:55That is a real situation.
- 1:08:57I thought it'd be something like Florida man dies trying
- 1:09:00to ride drone like Rodeo Bull.
- 1:09:02That's another good one.
- 1:09:03And I guarantee that's gonna happen too.
- 1:09:05Yeah.
- 1:09:07This next one is another sort of sad story, and this is, I hate to say
- 1:09:12shame on you, Jake, from State Farm.
- 1:09:15Shame on you, limu, emu, and Doug.
- 1:09:17A fleeing suspect totals a New York woman's car and her insurance
- 1:09:21company isn't gonna pay out, is it?
- 1:09:24Shame on Jake from State Farm or limu IMO and Doug because she
- 1:09:28did not have collision insurance.
- 1:09:30This is a freak accident.
- 1:09:31This is like when the frozen boulder of poo lands on your car from the airline.
- 1:09:36Like that's the same thing.
- 1:09:37Like, come on.
- 1:09:38That's not her fault.
- 1:09:40It's not her fault.
- 1:09:41Is that a collision?
- 1:09:42She didn't collide with anybody?
- 1:09:43No, but she only has personal injury liability on the car.
- 1:09:47So if the insurance company does not want to be gracious.
- 1:09:50They're within their legal rights to say, too bad, so sad.
- 1:09:53No persons were injured in this.
- 1:09:55You did not pay for collision insurance on the car.
- 1:09:57Therefore there's no coverage.
- 1:09:59I got tetanus just looking at this car, personal injury, pay out.
- 1:10:04It's like, where are you going with that?
- 1:10:08No.
- 1:10:09Her next step is to go after the state.
- 1:10:11It, it is unfortunate.
- 1:10:13I mean, the insurance company, they'd have to be gracious
- 1:10:16and not an insurance company.
- 1:10:18It's a scam.
- 1:10:19You pay all this money into the system and when you need it, they're like, nah, nah.
- 1:10:24But she wasn't paying enough.
- 1:10:26I'm sure she paid enough to get a new car.
- 1:10:29Well, yeah, but based on the pricing of whatever her insurance
- 1:10:32company was, she didn't pay enough.
- 1:10:34I mean, it's an Impala after all.
- 1:10:36Yeah, but if she, like everybody's saying, if she didn't have collision,
- 1:10:40I don't know that collision counts in this particular instance.
- 1:10:43It does.
- 1:10:44If nothing else, this is gonna get tied up in court.
- 1:10:47So somebody's gonna buying her a new car at some point.
- 1:10:50So Eric, I see your point.
- 1:10:51Her insurance company should not be liable for this, but the other person's insurance
- 1:10:55company should through their liability insurance or the police or whoever.
- 1:11:00Yeah.
- 1:11:01So because this is not her fault, but if they haven't found the
- 1:11:05person who did it, there's no other insurance company to, yeah.
- 1:11:10Call or if the other person didn't have insurance, she needs to
- 1:11:14get a lawyer and see the state.
- 1:11:15And on top of that, you can literally tell from the pictures.
- 1:11:18You don't have to be a crime scene investigator.
- 1:11:20We don't need to call Grissom for this one.
- 1:11:23You can tell that was not an accident created by something hit this vehicle
- 1:11:27because you cannot do that on the road.
- 1:11:29There's no way.
- 1:11:29I bet it was an Ultima.
- 1:11:30Of course it was.
- 1:11:31And it kept going 'cause it's here for all of it.
- 1:11:33The only thing she could do is sue the person for, I don't even know.
- 1:11:37Does it count property damage?
- 1:11:38Personal property damage something?
- 1:11:40I mean, that's like squeezing blood out of a turnip.
- 1:11:43Who else are you gonna sue?
- 1:11:44She could sue the police for inciting a chase.
- 1:11:47Ooh.
- 1:11:47Interesting.
- 1:11:48I wonder if that holds up, whether it holds up or not.
- 1:11:50It gives her another option.
- 1:11:52I mean, a good lawyer will find a way to make it happen.
- 1:11:55And then on top of that, there's the whole garnished weeds thing.
- 1:11:57'cause May, this is her only car.
- 1:11:58She can't get to work right now.
- 1:11:59She's gotta do Uber or whatever it is that she's doing.
- 1:12:01Yeah, but she's in New York Public transportation.
- 1:12:04Unless she's using the car for work that doesn't hold up.
- 1:12:06I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt.
- 1:12:08She needs to go to the police.
- 1:12:09She needs to sue the police.
- 1:12:10She's a victim.
- 1:12:10She's a victim for sure.
- 1:12:11She needs to sue the police to get a new Ultima.
- 1:12:14Shame on you.
- 1:12:14Jakes from State Farm.
- 1:12:15That's all I'm saying.
- 1:12:17Oh boy.
- 1:12:18Tanya brought us one.
- 1:12:19What is this?
- 1:12:21That's a funny place to park.
- 1:12:22What the, here's a video.
- 1:12:24There's Oh shit.
- 1:12:25Oh yes.
- 1:12:26Wait, what was this?
- 1:12:27A publicity stunt?
- 1:12:29Supposedly not.
- 1:12:30The guy in the Lambo was like backing up.
- 1:12:33Oh wow.
- 1:12:34Because he saw her coming.
- 1:12:35Oh, she that high up that she couldn't see 'em.
- 1:12:37That's what the article alleges was she's so lifted and oblivious
- 1:12:41that she didn't see the hurricane.
- 1:12:43So I will say, having driven these Silverados of this model year,
- 1:12:49this body style uhhuh, it is.
- 1:12:52One of the reasons I didn't buy it is 'cause it is nearly
- 1:12:54impossible to see over the hood.
- 1:12:56And you're a tall guy.
- 1:12:58She's not very tall.
- 1:12:59I'm six four.
- 1:13:01Yeah, I know.
- 1:13:01I can totally see how this is feasible.
- 1:13:04You know, we joke about how the movies are fake.
- 1:13:06Like, oh, you could never do it.
- 1:13:08Ran right up the front of that Lamborghini like it was a ramp.
- 1:13:11I mean, the hood of the truck is like a foot above the roof of the thing.
- 1:13:17So the hood, the bottom of the bumper's above the hood of the Lamborghini.
- 1:13:21No, no, no.
- 1:13:21I'm saying the hood of the truck is above the roof of the Lamborghini.
- 1:13:24Oh yeah.
- 1:13:24Yeah.
- 1:13:24So like her line of sight, especially if she's not paying attention,
- 1:13:28you, you can't see that car.
- 1:13:30Wow.
- 1:13:31You think Jake from State Farm's gonna pay out on that one?
- 1:13:33Woo.
- 1:13:35That Lambos gonna get totaled.
- 1:13:37That's what that's gonna happen to that.
- 1:13:38That's a what?
- 1:13:39$250,000 car A Huan easily.
- 1:13:42Maybe more.
- 1:13:43It'll be 1 25 on the salvage market.
- 1:13:45Hey man, that motor's still good.
- 1:13:47That's all I'm saying.
- 1:13:49Well, let's go behind the pit wall.
- 1:13:51Talk a little bit about motor sports news.
- 1:13:53So there was a small blur this month about nascar, and we talked about
- 1:13:59this two years ago in the drive through where they were testing.
- 1:14:02An EV version of the NASCARs that we have today.
- 1:14:06And they kind of went quiet.
- 1:14:07And now NASCAR is considering racing the EVs.
- 1:14:11So there's gonna be a NASCAR version of Formula E. Yeah.
- 1:14:14Or the next generation of nascar.
- 1:14:16I mean, in my mind, they just got rid of carburetors.
- 1:14:19So like this is woo ev.
- 1:14:21What?
- 1:14:22What's it gonna sound like?
- 1:14:24It's like a bunch of Dyson vacuum cleaners out on track.
- 1:14:27Terrible
- 1:14:32as they plateau.
- 1:14:33Like, can you imagine on an oval, like has Formula E even tried that?
- 1:14:38I mean, they're doing road courses.
- 1:14:40Yeah.
- 1:14:40It's gonna it, it's gonna make it like 10 laps terrible.
- 1:14:43All right, well speaking of terrible, switching over to sports car and endurance
- 1:14:46racing Monkey C Monkey Dew in the Formula one world, all I have to say is
- 1:14:53GT three racing plus land stroll equal.
- 1:14:56Epic fail.
- 1:14:57Do I need to say anything else?
- 1:14:59Lance Stroll.
- 1:15:00GT three racing.
- 1:15:01Who keeps telling this guy that he's a good driver?
- 1:15:04I just wanna read the stats from the race.
- 1:15:06I laughed so hard when I saw this.
- 1:15:08The first time he was lapped 12 times four.
- 1:15:11Milli one driver was lapped.
- 1:15:1312 times.
- 1:15:14He had 465 seconds of penalty.
- 1:15:18Now, that wasn't all his responsibility for what I read, and he finished 48th.
- 1:15:23Oh, how many cars?
- 1:15:2547.
- 1:15:30Oh my God.
- 1:15:31Where was this driving?
- 1:15:33An Aston Martin, GT three.
- 1:15:35What a clown.
- 1:15:36What a buffoon like, do you think he's gonna do more of these?
- 1:15:39I saw something and I didn't save it down, whatever.
- 1:15:43It was basically saying, you know, land Stroll deserves his seed in F1.
- 1:15:49You know, he won the championships leading, you know, whatever championships
- 1:15:53he was in leading up to Formula One.
- 1:15:55And I'm like, I didn't even read the whole thing.
- 1:15:57I'm like, look.
- 1:15:58Maybe he deserved his initial seat into Formula One based on
- 1:16:02performance leading up to Formula One.
- 1:16:05But in no way does he continue to deserve his seat in Formula One.
- 1:16:08If his father wasn't the owner of the the Blue Jean Company
- 1:16:12of the team, he'd be gone.
- 1:16:14He would've been gone already.
- 1:16:16Nobody would keep him around.
- 1:16:17So at this point, no.
- 1:16:19He does not deserve a seat in Formula One.
- 1:16:21I didn't know you could get your Formula One racing license by going
- 1:16:25to the Lego Traffic School at Legoland
- 1:16:30Ron.
- 1:16:30Oh, your face.
- 1:16:35Lance Stroll, just, I know that's why you watch Formula One, but we'll
- 1:16:38talk about that on the other episode.
- 1:16:40And since we're talking about sports car and endurance racing, I just
- 1:16:43wanna mention that we have scheduled a whole bunch of evening with the legend
- 1:16:47throughout the next couple of months.
- 1:16:49So if you're interested in being part of the live audience, we have Charles
- 1:16:53Mendez coming on April the 29th, followed by the legendary Michael Kaiser in May.
- 1:17:00And then Nicholas Bole in June and David Cot, who's famous for running the Red
- 1:17:05Lobster racing BM BMW M1 in August.
- 1:17:08So check out motoring podcast.net, look under shows, and then evening
- 1:17:13with a legend and you can jump on and register to be part of the live audience.
- 1:17:18I just do wanna talk about some virtual stuff 'cause that is now part of our
- 1:17:22catalog of things that we talk about now.
- 1:17:24So they just released a set of course of EVO six or 0.6, the sixth release,
- 1:17:29I don't even know what to call it.
- 1:17:31They're not even a 1.0 version.
- 1:17:32They keep modifying the game.
- 1:17:34This brings a bunch of current Gen GT three cars, like nine
- 1:17:37elevens and stuff to the table.
- 1:17:38It also adds Sebring and two classic supercars.
- 1:17:42You get the chance to drive the Kunta and the 2 88 GTO Ferrari.
- 1:17:46The big downside to a CC Evo being a evolution.
- 1:17:51Every time they change something, they either break something else or they
- 1:17:55completely change the way you had it set up and it wipes out all your settings and
- 1:17:59you gotta spend the next three hours, like recalibrating everything as I wasted a
- 1:18:03whole bunch of time getting it set up so I could try it before talking about it.
- 1:18:07Today.
- 1:18:07Some of the changes they made to calibration are actually really cool.
- 1:18:10They, they're showing you things like pedal output versus what the game
- 1:18:14thinks it seems, so you can really calibrate the pedals, which really
- 1:18:17help dial in braking and, and launching with the clutch 'cause the clutch
- 1:18:21is always an issue and, and getting shifting smoother and stuff like that.
- 1:18:25So you're really able to dial in the dead zones and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:28I will say pedals feel a lot better.
- 1:18:30The racing was a lot better.
- 1:18:31The F 40 is still a hoot, but it's also garbage to drive 'cause
- 1:18:35they made it way too fragile.
- 1:18:36So they need to stop making it so lifelike.
- 1:18:39It would be nice to be able to finish a race without the transmission
- 1:18:42exploding, but it is getting better.
- 1:18:45You know, they're making changes, stuff like that.
- 1:18:46I'll say I, I had one of my best races going back to
- 1:18:49what we talked about earlier.
- 1:18:50I hopped in the NSX and it was like, it can go the whole race.
- 1:18:54It was super reliable, it was quick and it was fun and it's agile and I
- 1:18:58was like, just make 'em more like that.
- 1:19:00I will say that they changed the physics model a little bit, which is really cool
- 1:19:05because it is more true to life in the sense that if you go into a turn a little
- 1:19:09too hot, like the backend steps out in a more realistic way, but you can catch it.
- 1:19:13And it's not like Tokyo Drift kind of thing.
- 1:19:15Like it feels more like being at the track where you're having a code brown
- 1:19:18moment, but you can recover from it.
- 1:19:20So I was really, really excited about that change.
- 1:19:23So if they stay on that path, that'd be great.
- 1:19:25They just need to make the cars a little less fragile.
- 1:19:28Now on the other camp, project Motor Racing, that's the other
- 1:19:31big one this season, right?
- 1:19:32That's based on kind of picking up where project cars two left off.
- 1:19:36It's a lot of the developers from that original title.
- 1:19:39It got a whole UI facelift.
- 1:19:41So when I logged in, I'm like, where?
- 1:19:42Yeah, I used to click here to do, I don't know, I either like relearn the whole menu
- 1:19:46system and it did get some iconic cars.
- 1:19:49One of them is right on the cover of the update.
- 1:19:51That's the E 46, M 3G TR, I mean that amazing car.
- 1:19:55So you get to play with stuff like that.
- 1:19:57And you know, I've been progressing with it since it launched just like a C Evo.
- 1:20:01And I still think the TransAm GTO series is the reason I keep playing
- 1:20:05that game because TransAm GTO isn't available in anything else right now.
- 1:20:08And it is absolutely awesome.
- 1:20:10It's my favorite class, hands down.
- 1:20:13But I'm glad to see both of these games progressing or both of these sims
- 1:20:16progressing versus some other titles have just completely stalled out.
- 1:20:21Like I haven't seen an update for EAs, WRC in a while.
- 1:20:24There's been a bunch of other stuff that's just completely flatlined,
- 1:20:27so who knows what's going on there, but we'll keep tabs on it.
- 1:20:31But these are the two big ones for this year if you're just
- 1:20:33getting into virtual racing.
- 1:20:35So that said, our Motorsports News is brought to you in part by Endur
- 1:20:39Reverse, powered by Hyper Dev America's premier endurance racing community.
- 1:20:43So check it out online to become a member@www.interreverse.com.
- 1:20:49Well, it's time for the GTM Track side report.
- 1:20:51So we got a quick update on our unfocused performance lemons project.
- 1:20:56We got new motor mounts, we got a new clutch because we figured it's probably
- 1:21:00be smart to not be on the side of the track, 20 minutes in with the unknown
- 1:21:04history and 237,000 miles on the engine.
- 1:21:08Might as well do the clutch and make sure that at least we
- 1:21:10can go more than 20 minutes.
- 1:21:11So that's done.
- 1:21:12We have yet to do the brakes and we still need tires.
- 1:21:16And we haven't decorated the car yet.
- 1:21:18So if anybody's looking to help us out there and if you're look, and if
- 1:21:21you can't, you know, a couple bucks would be nice too because all this
- 1:21:25stuff's getting expensive really fast.
- 1:21:27So our first event was supposed to be mid Ohio, like we talked about in
- 1:21:31the last drive through, but we pushed it off to June 5th through seventh
- 1:21:35weekend at New Jersey Motorsport Park, that's the hoop de at New Jersey.
- 1:21:40So we're looking forward to getting the focus out there and doing our first laps.
- 1:21:43We have some commitments from some drivers, so that's gonna be good.
- 1:21:47And hopefully the car will be done in time and hopefully fully decorated.
- 1:21:50But again, if you are in the area, you wanna come and meet
- 1:21:52us, you wanna come and hang out.
- 1:21:53The paddock is always open.
- 1:21:55It is free to spectate at lemons events, if I remember correctly.
- 1:21:59Don't quote me on that, but it is a spectacle.
- 1:22:01It is worth checking out.
- 1:22:02There's always a crowd.
- 1:22:03The cars are really, really interesting and you know, when you start a
- 1:22:07hundred plus cars in a two and a half mile track, it is absolute chaos.
- 1:22:11So we are looking forward to that for sure.
- 1:22:13Brad, are you excited?
- 1:22:14Uh, I am, I'm not gonna be able to make it to the race, but I'm
- 1:22:17excited for the lemons race.
- 1:22:18I will be able to make it to.
- 1:22:20But you got your Santa Claus suit now.
- 1:22:21You bought a driving suit and everything?
- 1:22:23I did, I did, but unfortunately I've got other prior commitments that weekend.
- 1:22:28Aw, so you're gonna race in October at some point, right?
- 1:22:31I'm definitely gonna be there for that.
- 1:22:33Uh, I'm trying to figure out another time to get there.
- 1:22:36To get out in the car and get some sea time before that event as well.
- 1:22:39So I am hoping, crossing my fingers, they had planned this year, New
- 1:22:44Jersey Summit Point and then they added Road Atlanta to the schedule.
- 1:22:47I really wanna get to Road Atlanta that's in December, so we gotta wait till all
- 1:22:50the way to the end of the year, which would be a great way to recap and look
- 1:22:54back over all the progress we made.
- 1:22:55Maybe we can squeeze in another race here and there.
- 1:22:58But yeah, super looking forward to at least the three races that
- 1:23:01we've committed to for the year.
- 1:23:02Just gotta get the car done, get everything prioritized and buttoned
- 1:23:05up and all that kind of thing and still working on a design.
- 1:23:08Right?
- 1:23:08Tanya?
- 1:23:09Thought we were done.
- 1:23:10We well, are we?
- 1:23:11But we're unfocused, which means we are not committed quite yet.
- 1:23:15That's why the design is blurry.
- 1:23:16Uh, is that what it is?
- 1:23:17Oh, I thought it was my eyes.
- 1:23:18You're getting older.

- 1:24:44I didn't say anything.
- 1:24:45Oh, I thought you did.
- 1:24:47No, I get myself into trouble every time I say something.
- 1:24:50Mm. Only on this show.
- 1:24:55Only anytime I talk.
- 1:24:58There's Tanya.
- 1:24:59Hi, Tanya.
- 1:25:00Sorry.
- 1:25:00I was dealing with a spider.
- 1:25:03Of course.
- 1:25:04It's like that other episode in a dark space.
- 1:25:09A quiet space.
- 1:25:12A quiet place.
- 1:25:13A quiet place.
- 1:25:14Yeah.
- 1:25:14That's what I was getting to.
- 1:25:16Yeah.
- 1:25:16That's a whole movie like that isn't there?
- 1:25:18Where there's like no talking Three eyes.
- 1:25:20Yeah.
- 1:25:20I don't want to be in the quiet place.
- 1:25:23No.
- 1:25:24Did you guys hear that?
- 1:25:25There's a podcast where there's like no sound.
- 1:25:28You just tune in and it's just nothing
- 1:25:34That's really dumb for a moment there.
- 1:25:37I thought we, that sound like the Yulong channel and Christmas.
- 1:25:39I think so.
- 1:25:40You know what I mean?
- 1:25:40I, I don't know that I could go more than, I don't know, 30 seconds
- 1:25:45at least when the microphone's on.
- 1:25:47Hello and welcome to, we Don't Talk where we don't talk.
