- 0:22Speaker 1: of camp and react to some of the most interesting
- 0:25Speaker 1: comments coming out of the locker room. The Bengals Booth

- 0:59Speaker 1: thing since a good season finale. The best TV shows
- 1:05Speaker 1: end the season with a bang. It was literally a
- 1:08Speaker 1: bang many years ago on Dallas with the famous who
- 1:11Speaker 1: Shot Jar episode, and more recently, I think every season
- 1:16Speaker 1: of Breaking Bad had a great finale, including the one
- 1:20Speaker 1: featuring Walt reading a book on the toilet. If you know,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you know my reason for mentioning this is Sunday night
- 1:29Speaker 1: season finale of the House of the Dragon on HBO.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say
- 1:35Speaker 1: I found it anti climactic. The best shows leave you
- 1:40Speaker 1: dying to know when the next season begins. This one
- 1:44Speaker 1: left me thinking, really, that's it. Thankfully, the best show
- 1:50Speaker 1: on TV and radio resumed soon with the start of
- 1:54Speaker 1: the NFL season. Now, let's get to training camp and
- 1:58Speaker 1: this week's conversation with my broadcast partner Dave Lappham. All right, Lap,
- 2:04Speaker 1: Once again, I have compiled some of my favorite comments
- 2:07Speaker 1: from players and coaches over the last week or so
- 2:09Speaker 1: as we discussed the latest training camp developments. The preseason
- 2:13Speaker 1: opener is coming up on Saturday night at home against
- 2:15Speaker 1: Tampa Bay and Lo and Behold. The starters are expected
- 2:19Speaker 1: to play, including Joe Burrow. It sounds like he's going
- 2:22Speaker 1: to get a series due to the COVID protocols in
- 2:25Speaker 1: his rookie year and injuries since he's had a total
- 2:27Speaker 1: of three preseason snaps in four NFL seasons. Here is
- 2:32Speaker 1: Zach Taylor on his plan for playing starters in the
- 2:36Speaker 1: preseason opener.
- 2:37Speaker 2: This is something I've loosely talked to some of the guys.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's not something I've advertised with the team or anything,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but I think a week and a half away, that's
- 2:46Speaker 2: that's what's in my head right now. We just want
- 2:48Speaker 2: to get a lot of work in. And it really
- 2:49Speaker 2: is you know, with games and joint practices, there's there's
- 2:53Speaker 2: not a ton of practice time once you start playing
- 2:55Speaker 2: your first game against Tampa Bay. Really, if you look
- 2:57Speaker 2: at the calendar, there's not a lot before final cuts,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and so just trying to make sure our team is
- 3:02Speaker 2: prepared for the first week of the season. What work
- 3:04Speaker 2: do we need to get done? And so these games
- 3:06Speaker 2: factor into that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So the Bengals have started owing to each of the
- 3:09Speaker 1: last two years. What is your reaction to the starters
- 3:12Speaker 1: playing in the preseason opener and do you think it'll
- 3:15Speaker 1: help them get off to a better start once the
- 3:16Speaker 1: regular season begins.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I guess, I guess only time will tell, but I
- 3:20Speaker 3: do think that you know, being part of the part
- 3:23Speaker 3: of the process where you go out there, when you
- 3:27Speaker 3: go to the meetings, it's like you're paying a little
- 3:30Speaker 3: bit more attention because you're actually playing. You know, you're
- 3:32Speaker 3: not just you know, that's for everybody else that' stopped
- 3:34Speaker 3: for me. It's not like you're not you know, observing,
- 3:37Speaker 3: but it's like your focus, I think it's a little
- 3:39Speaker 3: bit it's a little bit more intense. And then you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you go you start to go through your pregame ritual
- 3:46Speaker 3: that you're going to use during the regular season. You know,
- 3:49Speaker 3: when do you get there, what what's what's your protocol,
- 3:52Speaker 3: what's your process when you go out on the field
- 3:54Speaker 3: to warm up even before the your your position group
- 3:58Speaker 3: goes out in the field warm ups and you go
- 4:00Speaker 3: through your warm up procedures, then you cool down, then
- 4:02Speaker 3: you warm back up again, then you cool down. Then
- 4:04Speaker 3: you have to go uh and do a final warm
- 4:07Speaker 3: up before you go out in the football field with
- 4:09Speaker 3: your with your team to start, you know, to start
- 4:12Speaker 3: a game. Then the process of doing that, leaving the
- 4:15Speaker 3: locker room, getting out out there on the on the sideline,
- 4:18Speaker 3: and getting ready to go into a football game. It's
- 4:20Speaker 3: not like it's not going to be the adrenaline rush
- 4:23Speaker 3: and all that that you get in a regular season,
- 4:25Speaker 3: but at least you know, you're you're going through some
- 4:28Speaker 3: rituals as such to become habits. And you know, the
- 4:32Speaker 3: quicker you go through that, the better off you're going
- 4:34Speaker 3: to be. How many snaps they take, you know, I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 3: if Joe Burrow goes into that football game and hands
- 4:40Speaker 3: it off three times and leaves the game, I mean,
- 4:42Speaker 3: you know, all that other stuff we just talked about,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I think is more important to him than anything than
- 4:46Speaker 3: anything that happens during the course of that game. But
- 4:50Speaker 3: you know, it sounds like, you know, he said I
- 4:51Speaker 3: might get hit, So I mean, I think he's anticipating
- 4:54Speaker 3: that they'll they'll run their offense, not just hand it
- 4:57Speaker 3: off three times and and uh and leave the field
- 4:59Speaker 3: of It'd be nice to see them generate a couple
- 5:02Speaker 3: of first downs and mix it up a little bit,
- 5:04Speaker 3: run the ball in and throw the ball. Even if
- 5:06Speaker 3: they do run, you know, only a handful of plays
- 5:10Speaker 3: get something out of it from a productivity standpoint.
- 5:12Speaker 1: As a former O lineman, is it especially valuable for
- 5:16Speaker 1: the O line to play in a preseason game.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I think it is. You know, now, I do think
- 5:23Speaker 3: that one of the reasons that you play it in
- 5:26Speaker 3: the preseason was to get your your rhythm and timing
- 5:28Speaker 3: your communication, making calls, false calls, is it going to
- 5:34Speaker 3: be verbal, is going to be non verbal? When will
- 5:36Speaker 3: it be verbal? When will it be nonverbal? All those
- 5:38Speaker 3: kind of things. You start to hone in on on that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And if you've played together, you know that's a that's
- 5:45Speaker 3: one thing.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:46Speaker 3: The only combination that hasn't played together is right guard
- 5:49Speaker 3: and right tackle. However, that's going to a significant number
- 5:52Speaker 3: of snaps anyway, however that's going to pan out. So
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think I think it's important for for that that tandem.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And then you find out in an actual live condition,
- 6:02Speaker 3: game condition where you know when you're setting, if one
- 6:06Speaker 3: sets short, one doesn't. At the line of scrimmage, you
- 6:08Speaker 3: know you're more vulnerable to ets, and how do you
- 6:11Speaker 3: combat that if that starts to become an issue. You
- 6:14Speaker 3: work through a lot of those kinds of things. So
- 6:17Speaker 3: I think there is some value to the offensive line
- 6:20Speaker 3: playing together and just getting in a rhythm. And you know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: I always make the reference that it's to me, it's
- 6:25Speaker 3: comparable to making a fish. You don't think about, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 3: wrapping your forefingers and curling your thumb. It just becomes
- 6:31Speaker 3: a natural phenomenon, you know, and that's when good offensive
- 6:36Speaker 3: lines are playing at a high level. Man, the communication
- 6:40Speaker 3: is like all of it's nonverbal. I mean it's like
- 6:44Speaker 3: a blink of an eye or you know, a not
- 6:46Speaker 3: of a head kind of thing. It's it's pretty impressive.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So after the first preseason game, the Bengals are going
- 6:51Speaker 1: to have joint practices before the second and third preseason
- 6:54Speaker 1: games against the Chicago Bears in the Indianapolis Colts. Is
- 6:57Speaker 1: that close to playing in three preseason games?
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think it is. I do you know, I mean,
- 7:02Speaker 3: particularly in the trenches, you know, I mean they may
- 7:05Speaker 3: there may only be a period of uh, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 3: live tackling or goal line short yardage might be take
- 7:13Speaker 3: them to the ground, uh kind of scenario. But in
- 7:17Speaker 3: in the in the trenches, man, it's gonna be you know,
- 7:19Speaker 3: get your pad level down, come off the football defensively,
- 7:23Speaker 3: you know, play your gap responsibility, don't freelance. Uh, make
- 7:28Speaker 3: sure you're you've got your gap control uh in in
- 7:31Speaker 3: mind and executed. So yeah, I think I think from
- 7:35Speaker 3: a from an offensive lineman standpoint, I think those joint
- 7:38Speaker 3: practices are extremely valuable. And then you're working in pass
- 7:41Speaker 3: rush drills against guys that you haven't been working against,
- 7:45Speaker 3: and you're getting you just it's natural. You know, you
- 7:48Speaker 3: start to take a bunch of reps against the same guys,
- 7:50Speaker 3: you get in a rhythm and a routine, and you
- 7:52Speaker 3: have a real good feel and understanding and you get comfortable.
- 7:57Speaker 3: This will make you uncomfortable, and there's nothing wrong with
- 8:00Speaker 3: being uncomfortable as you're getting ready for, you know, the
- 8:03Speaker 3: first regular season game, no matter who that opponent might be.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Let's turn to Joe Burrow. Forget about the preseason games.
- 8:10Speaker 1: He's missed most of camp over the last couple of years.
- 8:13Speaker 1: He's been in there for nearly every practice so far
- 8:16Speaker 1: this year. Here's Joe on why that's so valuable.
- 8:20Speaker 5: That's hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of reps that you
- 8:25Speaker 5: miss out on before the game if you're not out
- 8:28Speaker 5: there for camp, and you know, little communication between receivers
- 8:32Speaker 5: and quarterbacks, between offensive line and quarterbacks, situations that come
- 8:36Speaker 5: up that if you don't do training camp, they're not
- 8:39Speaker 5: going to come up until the middle of a game,
- 8:42Speaker 5: and then you learn from it then, and you don't
- 8:43Speaker 5: learn from it in training camp. They're just you get
- 8:47Speaker 5: so much better day to day when you're out there
- 8:50Speaker 5: practicing the way that we do, and those rests are
- 8:55Speaker 5: just so valuable to me.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Lap last year, in the first four weeks of the
- 8:58Speaker 1: regular season, as joey from his calf injury, the Bengals
- 9:01Speaker 1: scored three offensive touchdowns. That was in four games. Give
- 9:06Speaker 1: me the lineman's perspective on having him out there for
- 9:09Speaker 1: those hundreds and hundreds of reps, as he mentioned during
- 9:12Speaker 1: training camp.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's huge. I mean, you know your guys out
- 9:18Speaker 3: there and like Joe's talked about, he's not happy maybe
- 9:22Speaker 3: initially with the spin of the football. Well you can
- 9:25Speaker 3: kind of make some adjustments to how you're releasing the
- 9:27Speaker 3: football and gripping the football and all that sort of
- 9:30Speaker 3: thing in that rep process, all those reps. I mean,
- 9:33Speaker 3: that's where you know you're trying things and okay, well
- 9:37Speaker 3: that doesn't seem to work. Let me try this. Okay,
- 9:39Speaker 3: let's go back to that. You go through that entire process,
- 9:43Speaker 3: and that's when you want to do those kind of things.
- 9:45Speaker 3: You don't want to do them in preseason games necessarily,
- 9:49Speaker 3: or you know, if you're not playing in the preseason games,
- 9:51Speaker 3: missing a bunch of practice before those preseason games doesn't
- 9:54Speaker 3: help the cause whatsoever either in that regard. So I
- 9:58Speaker 3: think not only for him them to work out everything
- 10:02Speaker 3: and get the mental reps and the physical reps and
- 10:04Speaker 3: everything that goes along with it, but we talked about
- 10:06Speaker 3: how the offensive line has to be cohesive and in sync.
- 10:10Speaker 3: The relationship between the quarterback and the offensive line is
- 10:12Speaker 3: important as well in terms of you know, when he
- 10:15Speaker 3: takes his three step drop, how deep is the five
- 10:18Speaker 3: step drop, seven step drop. I mean, all these kind
- 10:20Speaker 3: of things. Everybody's a little bit different, and you want
- 10:22Speaker 3: to have the guy that you're going to be going
- 10:24Speaker 3: to battle with, you know, out there as many reps
- 10:27Speaker 3: as possible, because I mean, repetition breeds comfort level, you know, mentally,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and it breeds comfort level physically, so it breeds comfort
- 10:34Speaker 3: level of performance. And if you're doing the repetition of
- 10:38Speaker 3: that over and over and over again with the same people,
- 10:41Speaker 3: including the quarterback as an offensive lineman, it's big and
- 10:45Speaker 3: running backs as well, you know, because guys read things differently,
- 10:48Speaker 3: they hit holes differently. It's just you have to get
- 10:51Speaker 3: a feel for your teammate, and the only way you're
- 10:54Speaker 3: going to get the feel for your teammate is particularly
- 10:57Speaker 3: when pads are on and you're working hard and you're
- 11:00Speaker 3: getting as close a simulation to game reps as possible,
- 11:04Speaker 3: those are the most valuable reps for sure.
- 11:07Speaker 1: While Joe has been out there, Jamar Chase hasn't been.
- 11:10Speaker 1: As contract talks continue, when does that become a concern.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I don't think it becomes a concern for for a
- 11:17Speaker 3: while because they have such a history together. I mean
- 11:21Speaker 3: they have thousands and thousands of reps, hundreds of thousands
- 11:25Speaker 3: of reps. Those guys are banked. I mean it's like
- 11:28Speaker 3: it's incredible. You go back to, uh, you know, the
- 11:31Speaker 3: collegiate days, and there's there's a there's a lot that
- 11:35Speaker 3: goes on at the collegiate level, as you well know,
- 11:38Speaker 3: in terms of repetitions and everything. You build on that.
- 11:43Speaker 3: They they've had success together, they've won together. They finish
- 11:48Speaker 3: each other's sentences for crying out loud. I mean they
- 11:50Speaker 3: know each other so well. There's a relationship there that's
- 11:54Speaker 3: that's extremely comfortable. And you know what you're what you're
- 11:57Speaker 3: hoping to build up when you're doing all these reps
- 12:00Speaker 3: that we're talking about with your teammates is trust and
- 12:03Speaker 3: confidence and consistency of performance. And those guys are about
- 12:09Speaker 3: as consistent as any two players in the National Football League.
- 12:13Speaker 3: They see the game of football, every nuance of the
- 12:15Speaker 3: game of football through the same set of eyes. There's
- 12:18Speaker 3: no doubt about that.
- 12:20Speaker 1: While Jamar has been watching Andre, Yosi Vash and Charlie
- 12:22Speaker 1: Jones are both having good camps. Let's talk about the
- 12:26Speaker 1: work that Andre did with wide receiver Guru Drew Lieberman
- 12:30Speaker 1: in the off season. Chase Brown worked with him as well.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yosi Vash was raw coming out of Princeton, but he
- 12:36Speaker 1: looks much more polished now. Here's Andre. You're catching everything
- 12:40Speaker 1: away from your body. Is that one of the things
- 12:43Speaker 1: that you worked on in the off season.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean there's a you know, everyone thinks there's
- 12:48Speaker 6: no technique to catching the ball, but there is. And
- 12:51Speaker 6: every time we would start off a receiver session with
- 12:54Speaker 6: my coach, it's about all about catching the ball. Like running.
- 12:57Speaker 6: We would literally run full speed straight at him and
- 13:01Speaker 6: if you didn't have your arms fully extended, we'd have
- 13:03Speaker 6: to do it again, you know what I mean. So
- 13:05Speaker 6: just having the toughest situation to catch a ball every
- 13:08Speaker 6: day at the start of practice is makes catching most
- 13:11Speaker 6: other balls pretty easy.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I think is it second nature now?
- 13:14Speaker 6: I mean, I don't think about it. I mean the
- 13:16Speaker 6: only thing I have to think about is whether I
- 13:17Speaker 6: need to possesion, catch it or get my yak.
- 13:19Speaker 1: That's that's what I think about. Yeah, so there's a
- 13:21Speaker 1: different way of catching it when that's the case.
- 13:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, like I mean Ti is a master
- 13:26Speaker 6: of possession catching, and then Jamar is a master of
- 13:29Speaker 6: yak dude. So it's like you have two really good
- 13:31Speaker 6: guys to learn from. And we also got taught that
- 13:34Speaker 6: with our receiver coach. You know, there's times you know
- 13:36Speaker 6: you need to you know, split the defenders, how to
- 13:39Speaker 6: drop step into the ball and catch it, or just
- 13:41Speaker 6: possession catching. I think as just playing more football, you
- 13:43Speaker 6: definitely get more of a feel for it.
- 13:44Speaker 1: How did you get his name and decide to train
- 13:47Speaker 1: under him?
- 13:48Speaker 6: I used to follow him when he trained Mohamed Sanu.
- 13:51Speaker 6: I used to watch his YouTube videos maybe like pre
- 13:53Speaker 6: COVID and then during COVID and stuff, and I was
- 13:55Speaker 6: just working on my own. Yeah, so he had a
- 13:58Speaker 6: lot of good things. And then I remember I was
- 14:02Speaker 6: looking to train with people this off season, and I
- 14:05Speaker 6: was searching, like the guys that I knew on Instagram
- 14:08Speaker 6: and there's this video of him training Evan Ingram and
- 14:12Speaker 6: he was just making him hold a plank and he said,
- 14:15Speaker 6: how bad do you want it?
- 14:16Speaker 1: And that pretty much.
- 14:17Speaker 6: I was like, Okay, I think I.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Let me try this guy.
- 14:21Speaker 6: And then he has the best decision I ever made,
- 14:23Speaker 6: in my.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Opinion, But that sounds like mister Miyagi stuff.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, but he's he's a guru for sure, and
- 14:31Speaker 6: he I mean, yeah, he's he's a mentor now and
- 14:35Speaker 6: he really cares for you know, both Chase and I.
- 14:38Speaker 6: So I think he's one of the best decisions I made,
- 14:40Speaker 6: and hopefully I just keep growing with him and keep
- 14:42Speaker 6: growing my career.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Andrey called it the best decision I ever made in
- 14:46Speaker 1: my life. What stands out when you watch on Yosia.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely in his football life for sure, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 3: staying on his life, that's that's pretty impressive. The thing
- 14:55Speaker 3: that I've noticed about Yosivah is he's probably seven or
- 14:58Speaker 3: eight pounds heavier and st longer and bigger, and has
- 15:02Speaker 3: not lost the step. He may have gained half a step,
- 15:05Speaker 3: and it has not affected his quickness, his ability to
- 15:07Speaker 3: get in and out of cuts, and then his speed
- 15:09Speaker 3: as well. That's the thing about him is he is
- 15:13Speaker 3: very very fast, straight line speed, but he can also
- 15:16Speaker 3: change speeds, get in and out of cuts, do all
- 15:19Speaker 3: those sorts of things. A lot of the conditioning that
- 15:22Speaker 3: he was talking about earlier in camp to me about
- 15:25Speaker 3: was the one legged squats and doing all these things.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I mean, he reworked his body, he reworked his techniques.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I mean, he.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Really busted it, and he made a big investment physically
- 15:39Speaker 3: and monetarily to get better on his own, on his own.
- 15:43Speaker 3: And they also worked with these group of receivers, worked
- 15:46Speaker 3: with the guru who's worked with a bunch of defensive backs.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So they worked against each other and so you know,
- 15:52Speaker 3: you're getting NFL reps the entire offseason against high quality
- 15:57Speaker 3: defensive backs all around the National Football League. So I
- 16:01Speaker 3: think that I think that he realized that he belonged.
- 16:07Speaker 3: You know, I can do what these guys are doing.
- 16:09Speaker 3: You know, here's a big sample size of what's available
- 16:12Speaker 3: in the National Football League, and I'm doing everything as
- 16:16Speaker 3: well and successfully as those guys are. So I think
- 16:19Speaker 3: that was a huge, you know, mental confidence builder as well.
- 16:23Speaker 1: That's a great point because Mike Hilton was one of
- 16:25Speaker 1: the defensive backs that was involved in those workouts. Then
- 16:28Speaker 1: there's Charlie Jones. He will never be mister Universe, but
- 16:31Speaker 1: he put on about eight pounds of muscle working with
- 16:34Speaker 1: Bengals strength coach Joey Bose. Here's Zach Taylor.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I know that he made a point of emphasis with
- 16:38Speaker 2: Joey to to let's get stronger. That's natural, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 2: coming out of college and having to play receiver against
- 16:44Speaker 2: the physicality, especially in this division. But but we also
- 16:47Speaker 2: noticed he can he can play tougher and faster because
- 16:50Speaker 2: he knows what to do and you're one your head
- 16:52Speaker 2: spinning a little bit. And I've really seen Charlie. You know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: we highlighted a play that he made today in the
- 16:57Speaker 2: team meeting because you're seeing the confidence take over for him.
- 17:00Speaker 2: He knows what to do and so now he can
- 17:02Speaker 2: focus on the nuances of how to do it as
- 17:04Speaker 2: opposed to what route am I run at? What is
- 17:06Speaker 2: the coverage? And so he's playing much faster than making
- 17:09Speaker 2: a lot of plays for us. And he is a
- 17:11Speaker 2: guy that I think has really had a solid start
- 17:14Speaker 2: to camp.
- 17:14Speaker 1: When Charlie Jones was drafted last year. I think many
- 17:16Speaker 1: people considered him to be the heir apparent to Tyler Boyd.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Boyd had sixty seven catches for six hundred and sixty
- 17:23Speaker 1: seven yards last year before going to Tennessee. It seems
- 17:26Speaker 1: to me that after Charlie had some injury problems last
- 17:29Speaker 1: year and then the Bengals drafted Jermaine Burton, he was
- 17:32Speaker 1: almost like forgotten by many of people that follow this
- 17:36Speaker 1: football team. But he's put himself back on the map
- 17:38Speaker 1: so far in training camp.
- 17:39Speaker 3: He has and I think in two ways. I think Yosi, Vash,
- 17:44Speaker 3: Charlie and Chase Round They're all fall in the same category.
- 17:48Speaker 3: It was like, man, not only was it a physical
- 17:51Speaker 3: adjustment of the National Football League. There's so much to learn,
- 17:54Speaker 3: you know, and Charlie is a slot receiver. There's a
- 17:56Speaker 3: lot to learn in there. So I think they, all
- 18:02Speaker 3: three of them, I think, made a commitment to improve
- 18:05Speaker 3: themselves physically and to make sure that they understood every
- 18:09Speaker 3: single thing there is to understand with respect to the
- 18:13Speaker 3: playbook and assignments within every single snap that they're going
- 18:18Speaker 3: to be taken, because that'll hold you back. I mean
- 18:21Speaker 3: that held my mind, had held all three of them
- 18:23Speaker 3: back a little bit as a rookie, some more than others.
- 18:26Speaker 3: But what they've done, and admirably so, from year one
- 18:30Speaker 3: to year two, you realize, all right, I gotta I
- 18:33Speaker 3: gotta get after it, and now I know what to expect.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Now I know how much there is to learn. Now
- 18:41Speaker 3: I know what the defenses look like that I'm learning
- 18:43Speaker 3: against and the personnel involved. And usually you make that
- 18:46Speaker 3: big jump from year one to year two. These guys
- 18:49Speaker 3: have Charlie being a great example, have prepared themselves for
- 18:54Speaker 3: a big improvement of success from year one to year
- 18:56Speaker 3: two with what they did both physically and mentally off season, Lapp.
- 19:01Speaker 1: As we record this podcast, the Bengals are eight practices in.
- 19:05Speaker 1: We still have not seen Trent Brown in uniform as
- 19:08Speaker 1: he rehabs an undisclosed injury. That means a Marius Mims
- 19:12Speaker 1: has been the first team right tackle and people are
- 19:15Speaker 1: praising him for more than his immense physical gifts. Here
- 19:18Speaker 1: are Dan Pitcher and Joe Burrow, just how he is
- 19:22Speaker 1: across the board.
- 19:23Speaker 7: You know, mentally he's plenty capable of understanding what we're
- 19:28Speaker 7: asking out of him. Sure, he's had a couple he's
- 19:30Speaker 7: had a couple of mas which are expected. He's not
- 19:34Speaker 7: making the same mistake twice, you know. And and he's
- 19:37Speaker 7: he's just really coachable, has a great way about him
- 19:40Speaker 7: in the building, has a good blend of self confidence
- 19:44Speaker 7: and humility. Uh that I think it's important for rookies
- 19:47Speaker 7: to be able to strike in this league. And I
- 19:48Speaker 7: think that he just very naturally lives in that in
- 19:51Speaker 7: that space and so really happy with a Marius Uh
- 19:55Speaker 7: And what we.
- 19:56Speaker 5: See so far, my feeling on that guy's pretty good
- 19:58Speaker 5: right now. His mindset, his athletics, in his size, his
- 20:02Speaker 5: willingness to be coached and grow and learn is all
- 20:05Speaker 5: in a plus. So this sky's the limit for that guy.
- 20:08Speaker 5: I'm really said, he's on our team.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Are we getting close to the point where the Bengals
- 20:12Speaker 1: should consider keeping a Marius Mimes with the first team
- 20:16Speaker 1: even after Trent Brown is back?
- 20:18Speaker 3: You know, Dan, When I hear the offensive coordinator and
- 20:22Speaker 3: the quarterback talk about an offensive lineman like that, it
- 20:26Speaker 3: takes me back to Anthony Munyos. A lot of what
- 20:28Speaker 3: I'm hearing there is exactly what Anthony Munoz was as
- 20:31Speaker 3: a rookie, exactly, I mean, confident, kept it to himself, humble,
- 20:38Speaker 3: I mean, worker thirst for knowledge everything they're saying about
- 20:43Speaker 3: memes and then of course check every box of athletic
- 20:47Speaker 3: physical traits. I mean it is amazing, you know, to
- 20:51Speaker 3: see guys of that size move is freely and fluidly
- 20:55Speaker 3: as they do. They both had injury problems, another common
- 21:00Speaker 3: in their collegiate career. There are so many commonalities between
- 21:03Speaker 3: Anthony Muno's and Mims. Both last names begin with them.
- 21:08Speaker 3: They're in the m club. But I mean he's the
- 21:10Speaker 3: only guy that started his first game as a rookie
- 21:14Speaker 3: in the offensive line at that tackle position. I mean
- 21:17Speaker 3: he's the only guy Mims might be number two. I
- 21:20Speaker 3: mean he I think that watching him in camp, I
- 21:23Speaker 3: see I see a lot of similarities with with Munyos
- 21:28Speaker 3: and Mims. I mean, I think I think Mims is
- 21:31Speaker 3: understanding it quickly. Anthony was a very quick study. Mims
- 21:34Speaker 3: doesn't seem to be having any problems in that regard
- 21:36Speaker 3: as well. It's important to both of them, and I'm
- 21:41Speaker 3: not I'm not trying to you know, Jinx Mems with
- 21:43Speaker 3: oh Man Anthony Munos. You know, if you don't, if
- 21:46Speaker 3: you don't play like Anthony Munyo is a rookie, You're
- 21:49Speaker 3: a bust. I'm not trying to do that because Anthony
- 21:51Speaker 3: Munoz is one of one in my book, no matter
- 21:54Speaker 3: how many people there have played in the National Football
- 21:58Speaker 3: League and will play in the National Football League. But
- 22:00Speaker 3: I do see similarities.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I do.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I do see a lot of similarities that that take
- 22:05Speaker 3: me back to that and I just remember that entire
- 22:08Speaker 3: process with Anthony. And I think Mims is tracking a
- 22:10Speaker 3: at a very good rate himself.
- 22:13Speaker 1: We haven't heard much about Cordel vols in this camp.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Maybe that's a good thing. Have you watched him much
- 22:17Speaker 1: and if so, what are you seeing?
- 22:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think he's really worked at it
- 22:21Speaker 3: as well. I mean Cordel Volston is I think even
- 22:25Speaker 3: bigger and stronger, you know, and and he's he's always
- 22:28Speaker 3: had an ability to uh to move latterally, change direction,
- 22:32Speaker 3: those kind of things. He's he's plenty athletic enough. And
- 22:36Speaker 3: you know it's very early that stample size is small.
- 22:39Speaker 3: But I think one of the things last year that
- 22:42Speaker 3: became an issue for him was eagerness, a little over eagerness,
- 22:46Speaker 3: over aggressiveness and in the in the big thing now
- 22:50Speaker 3: is with with a year of snaps under your belt
- 22:53Speaker 3: and uh having you know, success overall. When you look
- 22:58Speaker 3: at that season, trust your technique, trust yourself, trust your technique.
- 23:02Speaker 3: You know, don't lapse back into old habits. You know,
- 23:07Speaker 3: put stay calm, stay poised, and everything that Frank's been
- 23:13Speaker 3: working with you on for a significant number of snaps.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Now believe they're what's going to get you there. Believe
- 23:22Speaker 3: they're the thing that's going to make you the player
- 23:24Speaker 3: you want to be in the National Football League. And
- 23:27Speaker 3: I think that process continues form.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Let's turn to defense. The Bengals wanted to keep DJ Reader.
- 23:32Speaker 1: He went to Detroit on a two year, twenty two
- 23:35Speaker 1: million dollar contract. The Bengals are actually paying more than
- 23:37Speaker 1: that to Sheldon Rankins two years twenty six mil. They're
- 23:41Speaker 1: roughly the same age, but Rankins is not coming off
- 23:44Speaker 1: a major injury like DJ Reader is. Here is BJ
- 23:48Speaker 1: Hill on his new teammate, Sheldon Rankins.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Oh, he's a pro. I love being out there with him,
- 23:55Speaker 4: the way he communicates where we just like talk about ball.
- 24:00Speaker 4: We kind of grew up with a similar He had
- 24:02Speaker 4: a mighty line coach that had in college. He had
- 24:05Speaker 4: in New Orleans. A lot of similarity there. The way
- 24:08Speaker 4: we play and stuff like that. I love being out
- 24:11Speaker 4: there with them.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Sheldon Rankins is obviously known for his pass rushing ability inside.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Has he been getting pressure from when you've been watching
- 24:19Speaker 1: the eleven on eleven drills?
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think it's interesting. DJ Reader and
- 24:24Speaker 3: Sheldon Rankins have opposite strengths as such. You know, DJ
- 24:29Speaker 3: Reader the big you know, a lot of girth, no
- 24:32Speaker 3: stuff for kind of guy, but can give you pass rush.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Sheldon Rankins outstanding interior pass rush guy, but can give
- 24:39Speaker 3: you good snaps stopping the run. So it's it's interesting
- 24:43Speaker 3: they're they're they're opposite but effective, you know, still in
- 24:48Speaker 3: in in the way they're utilized. I think the big thing,
- 24:51Speaker 3: the most noticeable thing once you get the game snaps,
- 24:54Speaker 3: is that they'll be able to slide the interior of
- 24:57Speaker 3: the defensive line from nose tackle to three T technique
- 25:00Speaker 3: because they're both capable of doing it in the same
- 25:02Speaker 3: type of way as b J. Hill, you know, and
- 25:04Speaker 3: Rankins and others. I mean, there's gonna be other guys
- 25:07Speaker 3: in the rotation, but instead of taking that three technique
- 25:10Speaker 3: and flopping him, you know, and keeping one player on
- 25:13Speaker 3: the nose and moving that that defensive tackle on the
- 25:16Speaker 3: outside shoulder of the guard from right to left guard
- 25:18Speaker 3: based on strength to formation and motion and everything, and
- 25:21Speaker 3: a lot of times when that guy's moving, they snap
- 25:23Speaker 3: the football and it's all it's disjointed. You know, your
- 25:26Speaker 3: gap controls become a problem because you've got a guy
- 25:29Speaker 3: that's not anchored and ready to take on a gap.
- 25:31Speaker 3: So I think, I think that's an interesting difference. But yeah,
- 25:36Speaker 3: I do think. I do think that he is a
- 25:39Speaker 3: pros pro. And I do notice, you know, we're able
- 25:42Speaker 3: to be right near where the team is on the
- 25:46Speaker 3: sideline during practice, and every time he comes out of
- 25:49Speaker 3: a out of a team portion of snaps, he gets
- 25:53Speaker 3: together with the guy who's out there with and other
- 25:56Speaker 3: interior defensive linemen that might not have been on the
- 26:00Speaker 3: and not on the field to replace him, and he
- 26:03Speaker 3: kind of brings them together and talks about it. So
- 26:06Speaker 3: communication is a big, big part of the game of football,
- 26:09Speaker 3: and he seems to be a guy that communicates on
- 26:12Speaker 3: the field, in the huddle, in the locker room, off
- 26:17Speaker 3: the football field. I mean, communication is what it's all about.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Last week, we discussed the progress of DJ Turner and
- 26:23Speaker 1: Dax Hill at outside corner quite a bit. Let's talk
- 26:26Speaker 1: about fifth round draft pick Josh Newton out of TCU.
- 26:29Speaker 1: He got some snaps with the first team at outside
- 26:32Speaker 1: corner on Friday. Here are cornerbacks coach Chuck Berks and
- 26:36Speaker 1: head coach Zach Taylor.
- 26:37Speaker 8: Man. I love Josh Newton's competitive spirit, his tenacity, his
- 26:41Speaker 8: willingness to learn and grow. He's taken on two positions,
- 26:45Speaker 8: so he's showing that. You know, he has some position
- 26:47Speaker 8: flex but just from an overall day to day approach,
- 26:52Speaker 8: I'm extremely impressed with him.
- 26:53Speaker 2: He's competing his tail. I'll say that about him, and
- 26:56Speaker 2: like all the rookies, you know, they will continue to
- 26:58Speaker 2: be HIGs and lowers. But I love his energy. The
- 27:01Speaker 2: guy loves football and he's there for a reason.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I think he's looked really good in the one on
- 27:06Speaker 1: one drills that they do with the wide receivers. Do
- 27:08Speaker 1: you think Josh Newton is better than advertised for being
- 27:10Speaker 1: a fifth round pick?
- 27:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think some people missed on you know,
- 27:14Speaker 3: I think the Bengals were ecstatic when he was still there.
- 27:17Speaker 3: They had him targeted like third round kind of guy,
- 27:20Speaker 3: so when he was still there in the fifth they
- 27:22Speaker 3: jumped at that opportunity. As the legendary Paul Brown said, Son,
- 27:28Speaker 3: it appears the game is not too big for you.
- 27:30Speaker 3: That's what he would always tell you. I remember as
- 27:32Speaker 3: a rookie, you would look for that comment from Paul
- 27:35Speaker 3: Brown because that meant that things were going well for you.
- 27:40Speaker 3: If it was the opposite, Son, it looks like the
- 27:42Speaker 3: games maybe a little bit too big for you. You
- 27:44Speaker 3: knew maybe days were limited, it was on a countdown.
- 27:47Speaker 3: So I think Paul Brown, after watching Newton perform and compete,
- 27:52Speaker 3: would be saying, Son, the game's definitely not too big
- 27:55Speaker 3: for you. And I think that's the thing about him
- 27:57Speaker 3: is that you know no task is overwhelming to him.
- 28:03Speaker 3: He's ready for anything. I mean, challenge him. He's going
- 28:07Speaker 3: to step up to it. And now that pads have
- 28:10Speaker 3: come on, I'm excited to see him in game. I
- 28:14Speaker 3: think he's going to be a very, very sure, physical tackler.
- 28:18Speaker 3: I think he's gonna get people on the ground quickly
- 28:21Speaker 3: in a heartbeat. I don't think there's gonna be much
- 28:22Speaker 3: yak against him. I don't think you're gonna see a
- 28:25Speaker 3: lot of mistackles.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Our final SoundBite in this week's recording is about a
- 28:30Speaker 1: crazy stat tight end. Mike Kasicki is in his seventh
- 28:34Speaker 1: NFL season. He spent five years in Miami, won in
- 28:36Speaker 1: New England. Now he's a Bengal. He has had a
- 28:39Speaker 1: different offensive coordinator every single year of his NFL career.
- 28:44Speaker 1: One year he had two. Here's Mike Kasiki every year.
- 28:48Speaker 9: This time, I'm doing the same thing I'm doing right now.
- 28:51Speaker 9: Learn a new offense, learn a new plays, learning new signals.
- 28:55Speaker 9: And I mean I was in Miami for five straight years,
- 28:57Speaker 9: so it's not like I was changing teams left and right.
- 28:59Speaker 9: But there was just a lot of turnover and the
- 29:02Speaker 9: staffs over there, and so I will say that I've
- 29:05Speaker 9: learned a lot of football because of it. So it's been,
- 29:08Speaker 9: it's been. It's been a good experience.
- 29:10Speaker 1: So I looked it up. They actually had co offensive coordinators.
- 29:13Speaker 9: Technically you could say I had I had eight. Yes,
- 29:15Speaker 9: So yeah, my fourth year in Miami we had co
- 29:18Speaker 9: offensive coordinators.
- 29:19Speaker 10: Uh.
- 29:19Speaker 9: So yeah, it's been.
- 29:21Speaker 3: It's been. Uh it's been.
- 29:22Speaker 9: An interesting journey to say the least. But uh, like
- 29:26Speaker 9: I said.
- 29:27Speaker 3: I've learned a lot throughout it, So it's been cool.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Explain how difficult it would be to have eight offensive
- 29:32Speaker 1: coordinators in seven NFL seasons.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, uh, you know, there might be some similarity from
- 29:40Speaker 3: concept standpoint, but the language can be totally different. You know.
- 29:44Speaker 3: I mean this formation and motion and everything attached to
- 29:48Speaker 3: it was called whatever, and then the next off season
- 29:52Speaker 3: you have to unlearn and relearn now it's called this.
- 29:54Speaker 3: And then one year you're unlearning relearning coordinators language that
- 29:59Speaker 3: that is extremely difficult, and every coordinator has a point
- 30:04Speaker 3: of emphasis that's different. You know, I want to emphasize
- 30:08Speaker 3: these formations, structures, concepts in the running game and this
- 30:13Speaker 3: in the past game. And it might be it's never
- 30:17Speaker 3: going to be identical. It's just a matter of how
- 30:19Speaker 3: different are they going to be. The one thing that
- 30:23Speaker 3: I noticed about him, and he's proven it during the
- 30:27Speaker 3: course of his career, is his football IQ. I mean,
- 30:31Speaker 3: you have to be able to handle that mentally is
- 30:33Speaker 3: a challenge, There's no question about it, no two ways
- 30:36Speaker 3: about that. But he's a guy when he's in the
- 30:39Speaker 3: you know, detaches and he's in a two point stance upright,
- 30:43Speaker 3: he's checking things out and you almost can see like
- 30:46Speaker 3: Tumblr clicks, you know, you can see everything just like
- 30:49Speaker 3: churning in his brain. And it's almost like he's a
- 30:52Speaker 3: quarterback as well, looking at pre snap stuff, making sure
- 30:55Speaker 3: that he sees it the same way the quarterback does
- 30:57Speaker 3: and he's going to get on the same page. So
- 30:59Speaker 3: he is an extremely intelligent football players, very very high
- 31:04Speaker 3: football IQ and to do that, to go through that process,
- 31:09Speaker 3: I think it shows it. And really, I mean you
- 31:11Speaker 3: never hear coaches yelling at him or complaining about assignment bus.
- 31:16Speaker 3: So he's getting it, man, He's getting the Bengals system
- 31:19Speaker 3: down pad pretty quickly.
- 31:20Speaker 6: That's for sure.
- 31:22Speaker 1: We've got a preseason game coming up in less than
- 31:25Speaker 1: a week. I don't know about you, but I've got
- 31:27Speaker 1: some Tampa Bay Buccaneers homework to do.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely do as well Baker Mayfield. I mean, yeah,
- 31:34Speaker 3: I definitely have some Tampa Bay. But I know they
- 31:37Speaker 3: just paid their left tackle a heck of a lot
- 31:39Speaker 3: of money just and worse, man, they're taking care of
- 31:44Speaker 3: some organizations. I mean, I just wonder where the counterfeit
- 31:48Speaker 3: printing machine is. I mean, they got to be printed somewhere.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Saturday's game at pay Course Stadium kicks off at seven o'clock.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Our Bengals radio network coverage will begin at five, and
- 32:00Speaker 1: among the things to look forward to is a lengthy
- 32:03Speaker 1: interview with Joe Burrow that Lap and I recorded a
- 32:06Speaker 1: few days ago. Before we get to our next guest,
- 32:10Speaker 1: we remind you that the Bengals Booth Podcast is brought
- 32:12Speaker 1: to you by pay Corps, Proud to be the Bengals
- 32:14Speaker 1: official HR software provider, by Alta Fiber, future proof fiber
- 32:19Speaker 1: Internet designed to elevate your home, business and community to
- 32:23Speaker 1: a new level, and by Kettering Health the best care
- 32:26Speaker 1: for the best fans. Kettering Health is the official healthcare
- 32:30Speaker 1: provider of the Bengals. Since twenty twenty one, Bengals home
- 32:34Speaker 1: games have included a ruler of the jungle who leads
- 32:37Speaker 1: fans in the hooday chant just before kickoff. There have
- 32:40Speaker 1: been former players, Olympic medallists and die hard fans on
- 32:44Speaker 1: the throne. And there's been one national media member who's
- 32:48Speaker 1: become a fan favorite. I caught up with her on
- 32:51Speaker 1: a training camp visit to Cincinnati. We are joined by
- 32:56Speaker 1: the woman who Chris Collinsworth has proclaimed the Princess of
- 33:00Speaker 1: Queen City, our friend, Kay Adams. Here's my question for you.
- 33:05Speaker 1: You've got this mutual love affair with Cincinnati and Bengals
- 33:08Speaker 1: fans when you are at these other NFL camps to
- 33:11Speaker 1: players or coaches get on you about that.
- 33:14Speaker 10: Yeah, I just came from Pittsburgh, don't orry. I showered
- 33:19Speaker 10: and burned all of my clothing from Latrobe. But I
- 33:22Speaker 10: did not bring anything into this beautiful Cincinnati. But yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 10: oh you're Bengals fan, You're Yeah. Things are a little
- 33:27Speaker 10: more closed off, things are a little more you know, territorial.
- 33:31Speaker 10: But I'll take it. Let's go in the super Bowl
- 33:33Speaker 10: and from everybody wrong, Well.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Thank you for burning the Steelers again, that's much appreciation.
- 33:37Speaker 10: Thanks for having me.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I think this is your eighth stop on a seventeen
- 33:43Speaker 1: training camp.
- 33:44Speaker 10: Nineteen. Now we added a Falcons and Saints to be
- 33:48Speaker 10: and somehow I don't think my team knows that breaking news.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I see a lot of frowns.
- 33:52Speaker 10: So no, it's so fun. We're having a bust.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Do you sleep?
- 33:57Speaker 10: Sure? What is divine sleep?
- 33:59Speaker 1: Do I sleep like more than four hours?
- 34:00Speaker 10: And I got three hours last night? The night before though,
- 34:03Speaker 10: I got five, and then you know, system of average
- 34:06Speaker 10: is about five.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Is there an intravenous coffee drip?
- 34:10Speaker 10: No, but I need a black coffee before I can
- 34:11Speaker 10: do I am a different person on if I don't
- 34:14Speaker 10: have sleep and I don't have a coffee, so I
- 34:15Speaker 10: have a black coffee. Kat Rogerson my amazing steward. She
- 34:20Speaker 10: sort of like runs my life and I just close
- 34:23Speaker 10: my eyes and she lifts me from place to place.
- 34:25Speaker 10: She always has a coffee from me first thing, so
- 34:27Speaker 10: it's the best. And she's not here in my security.
- 34:29Speaker 10: Wonderful Dan this morning did not hesitate to say do
- 34:33Speaker 10: you need a Starbucks situation? I said please, but yeah,
- 34:37Speaker 10: but then it's like I need it. But then I
- 34:38Speaker 10: get into a facility and then you feel the energy
- 34:41Speaker 10: and the special part about not just the Beangals but
- 34:45Speaker 10: every team. And why I want to visit so many
- 34:47Speaker 10: is because thirty two have optimism. Thirty two teams out
- 34:50Speaker 10: there say right now, we are so healthy, we are
- 34:53Speaker 10: so motivated, we are going to win a super Bowl.
- 34:55Speaker 10: And who does want to be around that.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I love training camp. I love talking to people at
- 34:59Speaker 1: training camp. It's when they're at their most relaxed. You
- 35:02Speaker 1: are an awesome interviewer. Think what makes a good.
- 35:05Speaker 10: Interview Curiosity and listening, and that's it. That's probably as
- 35:11Speaker 10: simple as it is. Not adhering, you know, you have
- 35:14Speaker 10: to adhere to your values and you I always My
- 35:17Speaker 10: biggest tip for an interview would be, I'm always driven
- 35:20Speaker 10: by curiosity, but it's what do I want to hear?
- 35:22Speaker 10: What do I want the answer to be? Well, kind
- 35:24Speaker 10: of I'm not not as far as manipulating it, but
- 35:27Speaker 10: how can I frame this question to get the story
- 35:31Speaker 10: that will satiate my curiosity? And the reason I think
- 35:35Speaker 10: I've had success at it in this world is that
- 35:37Speaker 10: I love the NFL. I think that's very clear. I
- 35:40Speaker 10: like celebrating the players, and I think that that helps me.
- 35:45Speaker 10: I have the same curiosity as the fans out there
- 35:48Speaker 10: in the stadium watching the games, and so I asked
- 35:51Speaker 10: the questions they want answers to.
- 35:53Speaker 1: You finally get your chance to visit with Joe Burrow today.
- 35:56Speaker 10: I don't even believe. I kind of don't believe that
- 35:59Speaker 10: it's your vision. It's been for three years.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Yeah, things have gotten in the way when you've been
- 36:04Speaker 1: here in the past. So it's happening today, it really
- 36:08Speaker 1: it is. It is. Yep, it's definitely happening.
- 36:11Speaker 10: I'm nervous.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Do you start with the hair, the backlist jacket? Where
- 36:15Speaker 1: are you going to begin with with Joe.
- 36:17Speaker 10: If you talk to anybody at UP and Adams, I
- 36:19Speaker 10: have a shelf life in the news cycle. I have
- 36:21Speaker 10: the attention span of about him nat So the second
- 36:24Speaker 10: once that was in the news cycle for twelve hours,
- 36:26Speaker 10: I was done. So I like to move very quickly.
- 36:29Speaker 10: You know, things that are still even trending right now,
- 36:31Speaker 10: I'm like, it's old news. I don't like, what's the
- 36:33Speaker 10: next thing? How do we move it forward? So now
- 36:35Speaker 10: I'm onto you know, Zach Taylor's kids dyeing their hair blonde.
- 36:37Speaker 10: I want to know what that's like. I want to
- 36:39Speaker 10: further the story a little bit. I promise you I
- 36:41Speaker 10: will not I will very unlikely touch the hair the
- 36:43Speaker 10: storyline with him. Where will I start? I don't know.
- 36:46Speaker 10: I think I'll have to sense what his energy is.
- 36:47Speaker 10: I have a feeling he's going to be very serious.
- 36:50Speaker 10: Oh he'll be great, grab but I think he's a serious.
- 36:52Speaker 10: I think he's a serious. Individuals are focused at all times,
- 36:55Speaker 10: right me. No, So we'll see how it goes, hopefully.
- 36:58Speaker 10: You know they say ever to meet your heroes. I
- 37:00Speaker 10: think that's how I'll probably start. You know, how is
- 37:04Speaker 10: he going to impress me? That's what we've talked about.
- 37:06Speaker 10: Now what should I ask him?
- 37:08Speaker 1: Dan, Shoot, I don't know. You're a great interviewer.
- 37:13Speaker 10: I mean you talked to him all the time, and.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I just had the chance to do a lengthy interview
- 37:17Speaker 1: with him the other day and he was great. Here's
- 37:19Speaker 1: the thing that I find most interesting about Joe, and
- 37:21Speaker 1: maybe you can get to the heart of this. So,
- 37:23Speaker 1: whether it's the hair or the past Paris fashion show,
- 37:27Speaker 1: this dude is the most comfortable in his own skin
- 37:31Speaker 1: of anybody I think I've ever met. He just does
- 37:34Speaker 1: not care what other people think. So if you have
- 37:38Speaker 1: a way of getting at the heart of that, I'd
- 37:41Speaker 1: be interested to hear it.
- 37:43Speaker 10: I'm not Walter Cronkite, you know, Diane Sawyer, but we'll see.
- 37:46Speaker 10: I'll see what I can do. It's fascinating. Does he
- 37:50Speaker 10: have this sense of comfort now over time? Like you
- 37:54Speaker 10: sort of said, I wanted to focus on football and
- 37:56Speaker 10: now I have it And now you know, does that
- 37:58Speaker 10: mean he's mastered football and can open himself up with
- 38:01Speaker 10: other things like branding or did he always have this
- 38:03Speaker 10: in him and he just now feels like it's time
- 38:06Speaker 10: to step out and let those are clearly artistic I
- 38:10Speaker 10: believe parts of his personality. I would assume sort of
- 38:13Speaker 10: shine and will that be a great thing for him
- 38:16Speaker 10: as a football player or will he be scrutinized for
- 38:20Speaker 10: it even more, which again he doesn't care exactly.
- 38:24Speaker 1: I mean, ultimately, if he does well on the field,
- 38:26Speaker 1: nothing else really matters, and he will because he's Joe Burrow.
- 38:30Speaker 1: He says that people have forgotten him since last year
- 38:34Speaker 1: because he was injured. He's thirty ninth on the NFL
- 38:37Speaker 1: Networks Top one hundred list. Give us the national perspective.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Do you think people outside of Cincinnati are kind of
- 38:44Speaker 1: sleeping on Joe Burrow?
- 38:45Speaker 10: I think it has nothing to do with anything except
- 38:48Speaker 10: for the injury, and it's not I would have to
- 38:50Speaker 10: defend the nation in saying that I believe that all
- 38:55Speaker 10: injured players suffer this that you forget. I was just
- 38:58Speaker 10: with the Patriots. Christian gonzale as the rookie last year,
- 39:00Speaker 10: was on his way to a Rookie of the Year
- 39:02Speaker 10: on defense situation got hurt. So whenever anybody gets hurt,
- 39:06Speaker 10: you do forget them. I don't know if you deserve
- 39:08Speaker 10: that ranking. If you look at his talent level, his
- 39:10Speaker 10: skill level, his success against other AFC opponents. I certainly
- 39:14Speaker 10: you can make the case he should beat top five,
- 39:16Speaker 10: top ten, but I think the injury is all that
- 39:19Speaker 10: it had to do with. And I'm sure that that's
- 39:20Speaker 10: the huge worry and storyline and concern on every defensive
- 39:25Speaker 10: drill and snap out there with him. I'm sure Coach
- 39:28Speaker 10: lou is like easy, he's Trey Hendricks in bad Boy, Like,
- 39:32Speaker 10: I'm sure those things are going on because you do
- 39:35Speaker 10: you know what you just said. You said he will,
- 39:37Speaker 10: He'll be fine because he's Joe Burrow. So few teams
- 39:40Speaker 10: can say that, so few happened. What's happening here is
- 39:43Speaker 10: so special, but it also puts an insurmountable amount of
- 39:47Speaker 10: pressure and stress on one person. Though we did, of
- 39:50Speaker 10: course have success without him last year, which should only
- 39:52Speaker 10: give his team more confidence so they can go and
- 39:55Speaker 10: take it away from Patrick Mahomes. And that's the storyline
- 39:59Speaker 10: of the NFL. This your down, there's no there's cool
- 40:01Speaker 10: raven stuff. That's fine, let's beat them, let's win the division.
- 40:05Speaker 10: But the story for ever, everybody in the AFC just
- 40:07Speaker 10: has to gun for them, not repeating, and that's the story.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Bero Mahomes sweet too five pick out. I'm there with you.
- 40:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:16Speaker 1: So you had the great Willie Anderson on up and
- 40:19Speaker 1: Adams several weeks ago, and one of the things that
- 40:22Speaker 1: he said in your conversation was, I hope the offensive
- 40:25Speaker 1: lineman play in the preseason, trying to help the Bengals
- 40:29Speaker 1: avoid a slow start like they've had in the last
- 40:32Speaker 1: couple of years. Zach Taylor is clearly watching because the
- 40:35Speaker 1: offensive starters are playing in the preseason opener against Tampa Bay.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 40:39Speaker 10: I mean, if Willie says something, you got to do it.
- 40:41Speaker 10: I'm just a conduit. I'm a simple vehicle for these
- 40:43Speaker 10: sort of messages from Ah. That was an insane conversation.
- 40:48Speaker 10: It was one of those pinch me moments. I didn't
- 40:49Speaker 10: know he was going to be there. He was so
- 40:52Speaker 10: gracious with this time, so honest. He has so much
- 40:54Speaker 10: to give. He is so interested in giving everything that
- 40:57Speaker 10: he's learned over his amazing career to younger o lineman.
- 41:00Speaker 10: But I mean this a line. I'm super excited about
- 41:03Speaker 10: these big boys Cincinnati skyline. Let's go just talk to
- 41:07Speaker 10: Orlando bront I'm looking at him literally my neck could
- 41:09Speaker 10: not be further back. And he's one of the shorter
- 41:11Speaker 10: ones here. I asked him, how does Joe Burrows see
- 41:14Speaker 10: over you and he goes, I don't know, man, he
- 41:16Speaker 10: just somehow gets it done. But very excited about that.
- 41:19Speaker 10: I think one of the things that private what's being
- 41:20Speaker 10: slept on. I do think the run game is being
- 41:22Speaker 10: slept on. There's a huge hole. Joe Mixon a big game.
- 41:25Speaker 10: We wish him well, of course, but let's not sleep
- 41:27Speaker 10: on what this duo, this one two punch can do.
- 41:30Speaker 10: And Brown somebody that I think Zach was very measured
- 41:34Speaker 10: and wanting to see more of him when he could,
- 41:36Speaker 10: getting him into action when he could at certain times
- 41:39Speaker 10: when he could last year, to see that and have
- 41:41Speaker 10: confidence that he's the guy, and he clearly assaults this.
- 41:43Speaker 10: So all am I.
- 41:44Speaker 1: You had Zach moss On up in Adams as well
- 41:46Speaker 1: after he signed with the Bengals as a free agent.
- 41:49Speaker 1: Do you think that that's kind of a sneaky valuable
- 41:51Speaker 1: move by the Bengals because that one doesn't seem to
- 41:53Speaker 1: be getting much juice around the country.
- 41:55Speaker 10: Absolutely, anybody that has experience, you need depth at the
- 41:58Speaker 10: running back spot. We know that I haven't talked to
- 42:00Speaker 10: him since he's been here, but he's always been delightful
- 42:03Speaker 10: and you know, if you come on up in Adams,
- 42:05Speaker 10: you're going to have success. What else can I say?
- 42:07Speaker 1: Are you bumm that you will not see DJ Reader here?
- 42:10Speaker 10: Yeah? If I'm being honest, sure, And I think he's
- 42:13Speaker 10: one of those pieces that's really going to help them
- 42:15Speaker 10: in the NFC over there. I think that he is
- 42:17Speaker 10: a tremendous player. One of the first I would say.
- 42:21Speaker 10: He was the signing that the Bengals made that when
- 42:24Speaker 10: I was on Good Morning Football. I remember when it
- 42:25Speaker 10: came across the desk. I looked at my producer Hamilton
- 42:28Speaker 10: and was like, huh, it's a lot of money. That's
- 42:31Speaker 10: an uncharacteristic sort of like huge paycheck highest pid. And
- 42:35Speaker 10: then we developed a friendship and a kinship. But I
- 42:37Speaker 10: will say there's other personalities here that are you know,
- 42:39Speaker 10: Orlando Brown is no less exciting and fun to talk
- 42:42Speaker 10: to and some of these other amazing pieces. So from
- 42:45Speaker 10: a personality standpoint, I'll miss him. From an energy standpoint, certainly,
- 42:49Speaker 10: but you know, I trust with this what this organization's doing,
- 42:53Speaker 10: and hopefully you'll make me look smart as usual.
- 42:56Speaker 1: The Bengals tried to keep them, it didn't work out.
- 42:58Speaker 1: That's where it goes in the NFL exactly. Yeah, it's
- 43:01Speaker 1: a business. But they did sign Sheldon Rankins, so two
- 43:05Speaker 1: very different players, but two great players. But a major
- 43:08Speaker 1: problem last year was stopping the run. Is that one
- 43:11Speaker 1: of the things that you are going to be trying
- 43:13Speaker 1: to get at the heart at while you're here at camp,
- 43:15Speaker 1: trying to find out from Lou and others how they're
- 43:17Speaker 1: going to do that better.
- 43:18Speaker 10: I have been tracking the Sheldon story for a long time.
- 43:21Speaker 10: I think the departure reader was a huge hole to fill,
- 43:24Speaker 10: and he can fill it. We've seen him have success before.
- 43:27Speaker 10: He's a monster. I've been checking in in my dark
- 43:32Speaker 10: arts ways throughout this process, and I can tell you
- 43:34Speaker 10: that Sheldon is going to do just fine. And yes,
- 43:38Speaker 10: I'm glad you mentioned him because he is somebody who
- 43:41Speaker 10: is obviously going to have a huge role. I know
- 43:43Speaker 10: Lou wants to clean it up. He wants to clean
- 43:46Speaker 10: up especially the run stuffing, and he's the perfect person
- 43:49Speaker 10: to do it. We're all excited.
- 43:51Speaker 1: So I cover one training camp and it's hard to
- 43:55Speaker 1: keep track of everybody and all the things going on.
- 43:58Speaker 1: How do you do it? With thirty two?
- 44:00Speaker 10: I want to thank you for all the work you do,
- 44:01Speaker 10: because I just listened to you truly, so that I'm
- 44:03Speaker 10: up to speed with what's going on all across the country.
- 44:06Speaker 10: How do I keep up? I don't know. I have
- 44:10Speaker 10: a good memory. I guess I'm curious. I think it's
- 44:13Speaker 10: curiosity that sort of propels me. Just the it's so
- 44:16Speaker 10: good for me. You know, there's there's you have national
- 44:20Speaker 10: media people who cover everything, and they don't know what's
- 44:22Speaker 10: going on in the place, and it must be so
- 44:24Speaker 10: frustrating for you especially. You know, it's the tree tops
- 44:27Speaker 10: of the conversations. There's so many and so much information,
- 44:30Speaker 10: but all starts here. It all starts with you know,
- 44:33Speaker 10: I'm sitting with Orlando Brown and there's an energy shift
- 44:36Speaker 10: in him from last year that's imperceptible with a news
- 44:39Speaker 10: article or a podcast, and it's it's to be here
- 44:42Speaker 10: and sense those things in the hallway. That's the gift
- 44:46Speaker 10: that you have and that you receive from this organization.
- 44:49Speaker 10: So if I can get if I could get to
- 44:50Speaker 10: all thirty two, I would in thirty two days. I
- 44:52Speaker 10: would do it in the minute because it matters so
- 44:54Speaker 10: much to me. It sets the table for my entire agenda.
- 44:57Speaker 10: You know, I'm in I'm in New York with Aaron Rodgers,
- 45:01Speaker 10: and whether it's great or not great, I can tell
- 45:04Speaker 10: you a lot of the things that I noticed that
- 45:05Speaker 10: day are going to have an effect two months, three
- 45:08Speaker 10: months from now, you know, me asking about Devanta Adams
- 45:10Speaker 10: will see what happens. All these things sort of get
- 45:13Speaker 10: set in those places. So I don't know, I hop around.
- 45:17Speaker 10: It's similar storylines. I'm drawn to energy. I think I
- 45:21Speaker 10: think it takes energy. I'm drawn to dynamics organizationally between
- 45:26Speaker 10: front office, GM coach, quarterback and receivers. Like here. I
- 45:31Speaker 10: just I saw Jamar Chase here for a second, smiling
- 45:34Speaker 10: walking through got to work out in. I said, I'm
- 45:37Speaker 10: so happy to see you, and he goes, why wouldn't
- 45:38Speaker 10: I be here? I mean, what else could you want?
- 45:41Speaker 10: And I hope people as I cover all thirty two
- 45:44Speaker 10: people in Cincinnati realize how rare that is and to
- 45:48Speaker 10: have Tea say let's go and do this. And I
- 45:51Speaker 10: think you're only getting that because they know that they
- 45:54Speaker 10: can win here, and you're not getting that a lot
- 45:57Speaker 10: of other places because they don't believe that they can
- 45:59Speaker 10: win there. And to have that kind of buy in,
- 46:01Speaker 10: that's the kind of dynamic that I think is super
- 46:04Speaker 10: Bowl bound.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I think you're very perceptive where Orlando Brown Junior is
- 46:08Speaker 1: concerned because there is a.
- 46:10Speaker 10: Shift there, something going on there.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so didn't go to the Pro Bowl last year.
- 46:14Speaker 1: He was an alternate. But he's a proud guy. I
- 46:18Speaker 1: sense that he's really hungry despite all he has accomplished.
- 46:21Speaker 10: I think he said hungry in our interviews six times,
- 46:23Speaker 10: and I thought I had to do the internet in
- 46:25Speaker 10: fasting that he's been raving about. But it's not that
- 46:28Speaker 10: he told me that he had some I asked him,
- 46:30Speaker 10: I said, how did you free yourself up the things
- 46:33Speaker 10: that are weighing you down, the adversity, because there's a
- 46:36Speaker 10: looseness about you. And he said, I just had a
- 46:37Speaker 10: long conversation with myself about it. And he said that,
- 46:42Speaker 10: and I believe him. I could just tell that there's
- 46:44Speaker 10: something about him where he could just sort of give
- 46:46Speaker 10: it up. And I think that's a huge struggle. You're
- 46:48Speaker 10: looking at other teams, you know, like let's say the
- 46:51Speaker 10: Bills or the Niners having to get off the mat
- 46:53Speaker 10: and say we can do this again as teams, and
- 46:56Speaker 10: then individuals wanting, you know, a better year or want
- 46:59Speaker 10: to to be more supportive. I think he feels more
- 47:01Speaker 10: comfortable and that'll play out really well.
- 47:05Speaker 1: So you were in Latrobe, Pennsylvania yesterday, Oh gosh, home
- 47:08Speaker 1: of Steelers camp.
- 47:09Speaker 10: Okay, here comes the light detect or test? Is that
- 47:12Speaker 10: what's happening with what I saw in Latrobe?
- 47:15Speaker 1: Now we will go there, but obviously the AFC North
- 47:19Speaker 1: is a beast, Baltimore and Cleveland as well. Hard Knocks
- 47:23Speaker 1: is going to cover the division for the final several
- 47:26Speaker 1: weeks of the season. Is it different when you bounce around?
- 47:29Speaker 1: Do you get a different vibe when you're in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati?
- 47:33Speaker 10: I would say it was my first visit to Latrobe yesterday,
- 47:35Speaker 10: and there is a very overwhelming feeling of purity and
- 47:41Speaker 10: history for the NFL, the Steelers. Sort of it's brazen.
- 47:45Speaker 10: It's right out there for you. Mister Tomlin seems giddy,
- 47:51Speaker 10: which is a weird. I don't know if we're scared
- 47:52Speaker 10: of it? Do we like that? He seems very excited
- 47:55Speaker 10: about his plucking of one. Patrick Queen. I can tell
- 47:58Speaker 10: you that believe he was going to play huge, and
- 48:02Speaker 10: now he's got Minka and TJ. Watt and he's collecting
- 48:06Speaker 10: those infinity stones on defense. Let's see if they can
- 48:08Speaker 10: put it all together. He's excited. You know they've got
- 48:11Speaker 10: nause He's got a lot to prove because he doesn't
- 48:13Speaker 10: have an option picked up, so he's going to be
- 48:15Speaker 10: running very hard out there. So you know they're they're formidable.
