- 0:04Thank you for listening to De Pictures Media Radio. You rat you readything to
- 0:31me? Oh well, jus well not a bad stop. I just see
- 1:14Solipashions its events. Welcome back to the show everyone. Today we're gonna speak
- 1:40with a graphic artist and an author. Well she kind of combines the two
- 1:47ideas together. A marine turn has created a whole entire world and that world
- 1:53is called Ethrol. That Mythroal is a world full of equality, justice and
- 2:07it's a great inspiration for how we all want to live. And I get
- 2:14an opportunity to talk to Murrie about Methyl and the new graphic novel that's going
- 2:23to be coming out based on her world that she created and what it all
- 2:29means to her. And it's just kind of exciting to get to talk to
- 2:38a person as they get to as they're first releasing their creation to the world
- 2:45and seeing how everyone is going to react to it. So why don't we
- 2:49welcome Marie Kern, animator, graphic artists and world creator to the show and
- 3:01we get to hear about what Mythal is and what it means to her what.
- 3:38So welcome to the show, Marie. Hello, So we need to
- 3:46talk about the wonderful and epic world of Mythal. Right. Yes, it's
- 3:53like so, because it would be totally honest with you. I've always been
- 3:59a fan of cartoons, comics, all that sort of stuff, because the
- 4:02art, telling the story the way it does and everything right, you know,
- 4:06and the creativity and all that kind of stuff. Right, So,
- 4:14how did you how did mithro get born? Oh? Many many moons ago,
- 4:21I was about fourteen, and I had a start drawing these fairies I
- 4:30guess you would call them. I was inspired by a stickers that I had,
- 4:38and so I decided to expand on that story and I just went more.
- 4:54The further I'd gone into it, the more it developed. And of
- 4:57course I came across a group of people that were inspired by the story,
- 5:01and they also helped build the story too. It is today, Yeah,
- 5:08yeah, and yeah so and then going back like a few years ago,
- 5:18both my husband Ian and I we both have several ideas that we wanted to
- 5:25do for animation, but sadly, the cost of animation was far too high
- 5:30and beyond our budget. It wasn't until a few years ago that Ian decided
- 5:36to take one of his stories and turn it into a comic book, and
- 5:41so, through Ian's company Electric Lips Comics, the first issue of The Man
- 5:48of Chronicles is published. I was the I was the concept artist for careres
- 6:00and the interior color for the comic pages. When that first issue was published,
- 6:09that inspired me to take Tales of mythro and turn that into a comic.
- 6:15Yeah. Yeah, well I only give the audience a little background information
- 6:20here because if we if we trailed back about maybe what's almost ten years ago,
- 6:28right, yeah, that we all worked together on different projects and everything,
- 6:32and you were this wonderful graphic artist and let's say the the you came
- 6:44up with the creed, the creativity levels you would come up with when we
- 6:47were doing different campaigns and stuff like that were like it was like wow sort
- 6:53of thing, right, And so I know we felt it fell out of
- 7:00a long story short everybody, it's like Marie and I fell out of rust
- 7:04for a little while. Then we caught up with each other, and it
- 7:08was because I heard about that you were trying to get Tales of myth well
- 7:14published. Yeah yeah, so it was like, so I was like really
- 7:17excited to see and to see some of the drawings and everything that you had
- 7:23done. And if everybody would go to the the blog post when it's released.
- 7:30It's like you get to see some of that artwork and see some of
- 7:33Marie's creativity. Mm hmm. So how do you come up with the with
- 7:40with the ideas. What is like the thought process or something that you go
- 7:44through to to start conceptualizing. That's a very good question. Sometimes I'll look
- 7:51at something as fascinating as a rock and say, oh, that that comes
- 7:57up to the story and characters in the world. So I don't know,
- 8:03I'm connected with something in the universe. Yeah, and it just you just
- 8:11kind of let it go go free and oh yeah, because if I don't
- 8:18do that, then it just sort of travels up into a sponge and just
- 8:24sort of rots away. Yeah, let it fly. So yeah, So
- 8:31because I know, uh, years ago you talked about creating this this epic
- 8:39world sort of thing, and what's the basic message, because you want to
- 8:46use use this whole thing to empower people, right, yeah, a little
- 8:52Naturally, most of my stories turn into an inspiration for other people. So
- 9:01whether it's like self, follow your heart or or believe in yourself, each
- 9:13character in some way can find a relationship with the reader or viewer or something
- 9:24or somebody who is looking for a character to relate to. Tells Mithro will
- 9:31have that as well, where each character has its own his or her own
- 9:39journey and people will find a connection with that. Yeah, it will the
- 9:48main characters. So tell us about the main characters. Well, with this
- 9:54comic book, We're going to start off with Fenia Timesca and she is what
- 10:01you would call a prodigy of alchemy magic. However, she tends to lose
- 10:09control of her emotions and therefore she will lose control of her magic and start
- 10:18blowing things up. So one day, uh, a man named Darmantum comes
- 10:26and takes her to a school called Gardel University, and this is a pristine
- 10:33school for highly skilled alchemy students. For more, you know, you gotta
- 10:41wait till the next issue. So with what type of if you were to
- 10:52describe her as a person Athenia, she well, she's not so simple like
- 11:01uh some stories will start off a simple little farm. But while she's not
- 11:05that simple, she has uh without understanding her powers, she uh works hard
- 11:18to try and control herself by practicing martial arts. I guess you the form
- 11:28of like a self defense using magic and brute force. Uh, and she
- 11:37loves to write these majestic beasts called Clarence where they're they're kind of like buffalo
- 11:48type creatures, and that other farm creatures are kind of like chicken base,
- 11:58but they more look like dragons are I mean dinosaurs. So you get these
- 12:03dinosaur like creatures running in the desert farm and those creatures are called muk and
- 12:11they produce one of the staple food sources for Mithro, which are these eggs.
- 12:20Okay, wow, So so you're thinking about the whole thing right down
- 12:28down to the most minute details. Yeah, I mean, you're creating a
- 12:35world. You gotta Yeah, It's like, if you want to be sucked
- 12:41into a world, you must understand the bare necessities of that world. Yeah.
- 12:52Are there's like some lessons in life that you're they're using veenia you're trying
- 12:58to teach teach people. Mm hmm. Well, I guess for thenium one
- 13:09of the main major tough lessons that she will have to face with this issue
- 13:18and most likely issues in the future as well, uh temper, controlling the
- 13:28temper and and uh focusing on uh being true to herself. Yeah. Yeah,
- 13:46at the same time controlling her temper so that she doesn't hurt herself or
- 13:52other people. Yeah, the being true to herself thing as a creative person,
- 14:00and is that something that's important to you very It's going to be who
- 14:07you are, whether it's a creative person, telling a story, or just
- 14:18living your life daily. Everyone has their their method of being who they are
- 14:30mhm. And whether you believe it or not, everybody has a little bit
- 14:35of creative energy in them. Mm hmmm. I feel like, oh I
- 14:41could. I cannot create a story, but you could also without realizing it,
- 14:48you could use your creative There's creative energy in what you do on your
- 14:54during your day, right mhm. Yeahving a pro them or or or just
- 15:03coming up with solutions if you find yourself hitting a brick wall on something hmmm.
- 15:11Yeah, very true. Yeah. So out of the out of our
- 15:22main character, is there any parts of you that did show through, like
- 15:26some of your some of you, your favorite points of yourself? Hmmm.
- 15:33I don't know. I think a little bit of me is in a majority
- 15:39of my characters, whether they're quiet and shy or outspoken and and the center
- 15:54of attention. I'm sure in the middle of all that. Yeah. Yeah,
- 16:02because I remember that from working with you before that you were outspoken insteadfast
- 16:11when in some respects and then in other respects you were more the okay,
- 16:19I'll sit back and listen sort of sort of person. Also, yeah,
- 16:26so yeah, sounds me it's for you, right. So, because it's
- 16:36a whole world, right And of course Tena has friends, So what are
- 16:41our friends like, Well, get to meet them in later issues. But
- 16:48one of her best friends that she will meet in the next issue is Augia.
- 16:56Yeah. Yeah, she's like basically the other side of life. Denia
- 17:04as a farm girl in Bosnia is more of like I wouldn't say rich girl,
- 17:15but sort of like she lives a more peaceful life and she doesn't deal
- 17:26with farm animals or like gardens and musical instruments. Mm hmm, I see
- 17:38in well in well, it's also a school setting, right yeah, well,
- 17:51yes, the story will start off in a school setting. Then of
- 17:57course they will graduate and and see where the story develops from there. Mm
- 18:03hmmm. So or there any specific like social problems or anything that you did
- 18:14you want to tackle with this Did you want to deliver a message to people
- 18:18that did you want to get at? Mmm? Well again, this world
- 18:32will have I think mum. What I will do is explore the history of
- 18:40my thrill and the history is kind of similar to what most of us see
- 18:47today with what's happening with their governments and stuff. So the message I guess
- 18:56from that is take what happened in the past and realize that possibilities will happen
- 19:07for the future. So it's like, say, dark times are now,
- 19:12it's not going to be forever. There is more down the road. Yeah,
- 19:21yeah, we don't need to worry about what's happening. Like again,
- 19:34nothing's forever. So whether things may seem dark, yeah, I always remember
- 19:42that the sun will rise on a new day. Yeah, So kind of
- 19:51stay focused on on the on the positive and and there's more to come.
- 19:56Yeah. You can be optimistic, optim stick and realistic at the same time.
- 20:03Mhm. But also sending in the positive energy might encourage things to progress
- 20:17more positive for everyone else. Mm hmm. What does optimism mean for you?
- 20:27Optimistic? Yeah, A lot of people will start saying negative things like
- 20:38oh, this will never change, this, this, this all never going
- 20:44to happen, blah blah blah. I would say, okay, uh,
- 20:53that may seem true, but that's only part of the truth that if we
- 21:02keep pushing forward and not dwelling on the negative, we'll see that Hey,
- 21:10that was just an illusion. There's still a goal yet to make mm or
- 21:18things are not. Sometimes things change and sometimes they change the better. Is
- 21:29that what you're trying to do with uh with a methaorl is teach people that
- 21:33things can change for the better. Yeah, it's one of them, one
- 21:37of the things. Yeah, what did the other things? Yeah? Come
- 21:47on, you can spell hm hmm again h encouragement mm hmm. Focus on
- 22:06your full beyond your full potential. Don't give yourself to any limits, because
- 22:15sometimes limitations are what causes us to hold back and dwell on negative h mm
- 22:27hmmm mm hmm. Sometimes you just got to take that risk and and go
- 22:38for your goals regardless what if anybody else says about them. Mm hmm.
- 22:48So was that is that you moving forward and you not listening to the naysayers?
- 23:00Is that part of Metro being created because you you went forward with it
- 23:07and regardless of whatever nair was around. Well, I didn't really have any
- 23:14many naysayers. I just didn't give up no matter how many times I technically
- 23:22failed. H try and achieve because originally Teales and Methro I wanted it to
- 23:30be an animated series, but there was just tony let let backs and and
- 23:38and put downs saying well, that's not what we're looking for, or we
- 23:47expect to have this as a full on anime series before we take it on,
- 23:52et cetera, et cetera. You know things that well, if I
- 23:56was a big expensive studios in the problem, but I'm just one person.
- 24:03And then I had like a small group of people helping with the story.
- 24:06Of course, one of them being Doug Lesbie who helped write it. Yeah,
- 24:12so his writing, some of his writing has been transformed into comic for
- 24:22the story, and of course I added to it to make it flow for
- 24:30comic book. But the point that I'm trying to make is that regardless of
- 24:38all these disappointments, I guess you would call them. And I realized through
- 24:45the inspiration of Ian doing his comic book, I thought, Okay, well
- 24:48why don't I try that? And now tells me thrill was finally getting told.
- 24:56Right, So the endpoint is you want the story told, yeah,
- 25:00and hell well why not we could eventually still see see it appear on on
- 25:07our on our screens as an animation is just you know, did this is
- 25:18one step towards it? Right? Yes? So is that part of part
- 25:23of one of the lessons that you're learning is to keep taking the steps,
- 25:30take care of the steps, and sometimes you gotta take a different path to
- 25:36get the same solutions. Mm hmm. That's part of your creativity is to
- 25:44find find the path that leads to the solution. Right. Very cool?
- 25:53Mm hmm. So the anime you haven't really given up on the animated series.
- 25:59You're just taking this as a step to get there. Yes to me.
- 26:07Uh so you're uh, you're using this step to develop an audience towards
- 26:15a reality. Correct. Yeah, And what what do you what? What
- 26:26would you want that audience to do with with what they're learning from from the
- 26:30Tails? Right? What would you want to Is there some action that you
- 26:40would want the audience to do the people who read The Tails of Methrol?
- 26:44Would you what would you want them to do? How would you want them
- 26:47to act? Well? Best, the best way to help support not just
- 26:55my comic book, but Ian's as well is go to our mark shop e
- 26:59l pmarch dot com. Yeah, and purchase one of our many designs that
- 27:07we have on that store. We We've got his uh Man of Chronicles,
- 27:15u as T shirts, blankets, et cetera. Uh And then I'm also
- 27:22wearing one of the Mythral shirts. So this is one of the Yeah,
- 27:32yeah that one there too, plus other other designs that I have for it.
- 27:37Yeah. So I imagine you you want this whole thing to become like
- 27:47a whole movement, like like you know, we'll go other comics like from
- 27:56when we were growing up, you know, we we have we had like
- 27:59the Spider Man comics and the Fantastic for the Avenger comics and all like that,
- 28:07and it's like we were learning like equality and justice from these comic books.
- 28:15You know, he's trying to create a movement like like like they did
- 28:19with the with the comics then you know, well in a way, but
- 28:26basically just showing what what's life like on a different world, like a world
- 28:38with two sons for example. Yeah, is there any parts of that world
- 28:45did you'd like to see in our world? Hm? Hmm, Like maybe
- 28:52attitudes or you know, how people treat each other sort of thing, well,
- 29:04regardless of what's happening now, Like there's a lot of diversity. But
- 29:12again, regardless how one might think about what's going on now, it's again,
- 29:22it's not gonna last forever. You never know what's going to happen.
- 29:26And sometimes, yes, we're always going to meet somebody that we disagree with,
- 29:33but how we react to that is up to us as individuals. Like
- 29:45some people will will just full on hate what anybody has to say. Yeah,
- 29:52or somebody like me is like, okay, I hear you, but
- 29:56strongly disagree and move on. Well there's an interesting concept, right, It's
- 30:03like instead of dwelling in the in the disagreement, in the in the hatred
- 30:08part, okay, we can agree to disagree and then we can still move
- 30:14forward and and create more more beauty and and loving in the in our world.
- 30:19Right. Well, that's a good, good goal to have. Yes,
- 30:26it's it's not going to be easy to fully on expect that to happen
- 30:33overnight. It's a work in progress. Yeah, can't we have a magic
- 30:41wand and a puff Oh everybody loves each other? Yay? M hm,
- 30:51yeah, you know, like the like comic books and things like that are
- 31:00are part of that magic wand of creativity to help us know that that's possible.
- 31:08I would consider them more like planting the seed of tree of knowledge.
- 31:18I like that one. Mm hmm. What would be some of the fruit
- 31:25that you'd like to see on that tree of knowledge? Mm hmm peaches?
- 31:41Mm hmm. What would that peach represent? I mean like fuzzy on the
- 31:48outside, sweet on the inside. Ah, So we'd have a world we'd
- 31:59have we'd have a world full of fuzzy on the outside and sweet on the
- 32:05inside. Yeah, meaning that we'd have to as we go through, we
- 32:10had to go through maybe a little a little bit of journey, but the
- 32:16end would be something really cool, right yeah, and then using the core
- 32:22as another seed to plant, so the journey of learning keeps going. Mm
- 32:36hmm. That's that is a really cool concept in of itself, right to
- 32:46keep planning the seed and keep learning. Yeap, gain the knowledge, plant
- 32:52the seed, learn more sounds but right yep. So what are some of
- 33:04some of the lessons that you've learned while going through this journey of creating mythrol
- 33:10and and what what would you in and what is the things that you could
- 33:21teach people from it? Um? Well, I learned would have inspired me
- 33:36to take classes for animation. So I got to learn how to develop animation
- 33:44and putting together serious pitch booklets and them. From there, uh, working
- 34:00together with some friends on some other animation projects. And then of course me
- 34:07Ampathy and we learned together how to put together comic book and then how to
- 34:16write for the on the book and all the little tricks trying to put the
- 34:23comic together. You mean little tricks are putting the comic book together, like
- 34:30how to do those speech bubbles, for example, and how to properly layer
- 34:42the comic book the artwork and displaying the boxes for the each panel. M
- 35:01So it's so you create each panel layer by layer for me, yes,
- 35:12because it's just easier to do it that way in case I have to move
- 35:17certain images over room for the speech bubbles. Yeah, I do remember something
- 35:29that from because remember when we all worked together, because I used to do
- 35:37some graphic arts too, and everything right and and sign development all that kind
- 35:42of stuff, and I remember all the layers in And one of the things
- 35:47that people didn't get that never tried anything at all in graphic arts was why
- 35:57it took so long for something to say eve as you have right, It's
- 36:07like those people think that that it's like one of the reasons why it takes
- 36:12so long for things to develop is because they most people think of a single
- 36:19they think of the like texts, it's a single like a word documents,
- 36:22only a single layer. It's like the zip zapp. It's it's saved in.
- 36:27And uh when you have like I don't know, like the your your
- 36:35background right, that that tells a mythrol that could be I see like two
- 36:42different types of texts, and and this the son that's just behind your your
- 36:51head. It's like two sons, right, It's like and each one of
- 36:57those things in of itself had to be a layer. Mm hmm. And
- 37:00then don't forget the little the little moon in this corner and then see yeah,
- 37:07other moon on this side. So all that all that work to create
- 37:12each layer. And then you have to put the layers together in just the
- 37:15right way so that the shading and everything else works also mm hmm. It's
- 37:22like and then you hit save and then you go get a coffee and you
- 37:28come back and you look at the screen and it's like, oh, it's
- 37:30still saving okay, Uh, I'll cook get a cookie now. And you
- 37:37finished the coffee and the cookie and they'll behold it's saved. Do you remember
- 37:45that so many moons ago? Yeah? So it was always always lots of
- 37:58fun, right, m you know, it was like the waiting part that
- 38:05he had this for it to all come together. Well, a lot of
- 38:10computers are more powerful now I can handle more data. But yeah, I
- 38:17remember I remember turning on a computer going to get a coffee or something,
- 38:23coming back and it's still uploading. Yeah, yeah, yeah type for a
- 38:30computer. Yeah. So well, it's the fun part of about it,
- 38:39all right. It's a lot of hard work that you put into it mm
- 38:44hmm and creating it. And do you are you able to like reuse like
- 38:58like say that background that's behind you, Like if we were to take away
- 39:04the bubble that has the the texts and it two levels and it takes it.
- 39:09If we were to remove those and you had that background, could you
- 39:14introduce characters straight into it? Yep. But beauty of having layers is on
- 39:20the boat, so you can actually like literally remove the go in click click,
- 39:29okay, and layers gone now click click put that layer in and it
- 39:34can't kind of kind of helps the work move along a little faster. Yeah,
- 39:39And I don't do usually don't do a click click. I used drop
- 39:43and drag, drop and drag. Yeah. So so yeah, so you're
- 39:54having a lot of fun like building methrol and and what's the satisfaction of watching
- 40:01it come to life? Mum, It's kind of great. And the as
- 40:13I go along, I get to be more creative with the the world itself
- 40:21and the vehicles that these these characters drive in. It's not not like normal
- 40:29cars that we have. The cars are different, and I kind of in
- 40:37order to make sure that I got the perspective correctly, I do a unique
- 40:45way of uh going into Blender and modeling the rooms or the vehicles in the
- 40:58three D and then rendering it so that I could take each perspective and kind
- 41:05of traceful for it. Mm hmm. Okay, very cool. So when's
- 41:13the big release soon? I'm going to say either maybe sometime in October.
- 41:25Again, we're on a process of having it proof read for a grammar mm
- 41:34hmm, and then once that's completed, then we fall on launch and it
- 41:44should be within a few weeks. Again, I probably would recommend following us
- 41:52on social media because that will uh we will definitely be announcing the launches on
- 42:02social media. Cool, best ways to find you on social media and find
