- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Friday September 4, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where the Coalition lights a political fire over tobacco tax. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor is pushing a dramatic plan to slash tobacco excise by up to 80 per cent... dropping the price of a 20-pack from around thirty dollars to about six. The Coalition argues high taxes fuel a booming black market and empower organised crime... saying cutting tax would undercut illegal imports and restore control. But health experts and the government warn this is a deadly experiment... pointing to decades of evidence that higher prices mean fewer smokers... and fewer deaths. For Australians, it’s a clash between cost-of-living frustration and public health... and it may shape the next election’s debate on how far we go to tackle smoking versus crime. — — [serious] Staying in federal politics... another story with clear human stakes. The Albanese government is under pressure over housing ... as big banks and business groups call for a major boost to housing supply. Home loan applications are sliding and young buyers are increasingly locked out... while rents keep rising in most capital cities. Banks are warning that unless planning rules loosen and more homes are built, interest rate moves alone won’t fix affordability... or the rental squeeze. For many Australians this means tough trade‑offs... putting off starting a family, moving further from work, or staying in share houses longer... all while watching prices outpace wages. — — [serious] On the economy... and your mortgage. Fresh GDP figures show the Australian economy still growing... around four‑tenths of a per cent last quarter... slightly stronger than many expected. That resilience sounds positive... but it puts the Reserve Bank in a bind. Stubborn inflation plus better‑than‑expected growth increase the odds of another cash rate hike in coming months. Markets are now pricing in a strong chance of at least one more rise by November. For households already stretched... another move from the RBA could mean higher monthly repayments, weaker spending, and more stress for small businesses trying to keep doors open. — — [serious] Overseas in South Asia... Australia steps in after disaster in Nepal. Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirms a specialist Australian team of drone operators is deploying to support search and rescue efforts after deadly landslides and floods in the Himalayas. The high‑tech drones can scan dangerous terrain that is too risky for rescuers on foot... helping locate missing people and map fresh landslip risks. Australia has also upped its aid funding... and dozens of Australians in the region are still being contacted and accounted for. For listeners here, it’s another example of Australia acting as a regional first responder... using technology, not just boots on the ground, when nature hits hard. — — [urgent] Meanwhile in the United States... attention turns again to the global inflation fight. Stronger‑than‑expected US jobs and spending data keep pressure on the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates higher for longer. When the Fed stays tough... global borrowing costs usually follow... lifting the Australian dollar’s volatility and influencing what our own Reserve Bank does next. For Australian exporters, a shifting dollar can change profits overnight... and for investors and super funds, Wall Street’s reaction to Fed signals often flows straight through to local share markets. — — [curious] Now to Europe... and the climate clock. New analysis from European climate agencies suggests the world is on track to breach the key 1.5‑degree warming threshold in the early 2030s if emissions don’t fall much faster. That target underpins global climate agreements... and Pacific neighbours have been warning Australia it is not moving quickly enough. For Australians, the stakes are concrete... more dangerous fire seasons, hotter cities, and rising insurance costs for floods and storms. The debate here isn’t just about distant targets... it’s about how quickly we can shift our energy system while keeping power reliable and bills manageable. — — [hopeful] And we finish with science that could change lives. Australian researchers report a breakthrough in stem‑cell technology that may one day reduce the need for bone‑marrow donors in treating life‑threatening blood diseases. The work is still early... but it raises the prospect of lab‑grown cells tailored to patients... cutting waiting times and widening access to treatment. For families facing long odds on donor matches, progress like this is a reminder that even in tough times... innovation can quietly bend the future in a better direction. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
