- 0:00Welcome back to the Four Freedom podcast.
- 0:02What a wonderful season we have had this year.
- 0:05We are excited about taking our summer break, taking a couple of
- 0:09months off in June and July as we normally do.
- 0:12And we've got some fantastic sermons lined up for you to
- 0:15listen to. We've got some bonus interviews
- 0:18that we're going to be dropping this summer.
- 0:20But before we get to the summer, we have to do our summer
- 0:23episode, our last episode of the season.
- 0:26Brett, we are at episode 225 going into the summer six years
- 0:32ago, being John, we never thought we'd make it to 225,
- 0:36much less make it this far. We never thought we'd have our
- 0:39own cigar company. We never thought any of this
- 0:42would happen, that I would have wrote a book.
- 0:44But I'm grateful for the opportunity to sit behind a mic
- 0:48and talk to you guys and grateful for my friendship with
- 0:51Brett. And we've got an action-packed
- 0:54episode today. This may be the summer break
- 0:56episode, but you don't want to miss it.
- 0:58We're going to jump through some fun things here in the
- 0:59second-half of the podcast. It's a Brett, welcome back to
- 1:03the show. How are you doing, my man?
- 1:05Man, things are going great. And Speaking of the past, you
- 1:08know, I, I remember meeting you and John at the for the Sake of
- 1:11the Gospel Conference. And I think we met in bourbon.
- 1:15I think this was the first time we met.
- 1:17We've been in a couple of conferences and I've never
- 1:19imagined that I, I would never be on the podcast, but I was a
- 1:23long time listener and I am so thankful to be here with you and
- 1:28to be recording on the podcast. And one day John's going to come
- 1:34back and I'm going to be on the episode with y'all because every
- 1:37time he's he's come back, I've been absent, I've been off doing
- 1:41something. So we're going to have to see if
- 1:43we can next season get him on here where all three of us can
- 1:46be on here. I think that'd be great.
- 1:48Absolutely, yeah. I think it we can make that
- 1:50happen. And he's he doesn't do anything.
- 1:54He acts like he's busy, but he really doesn't do anything at
- 1:57all. He does listen to every episode,
- 2:00so we can always crack on him a little bit and have a good time.
- 2:04But man, I am grateful for today.
- 2:07Thankful that we had a wonderful episode this last time with
- 2:10Bridget and all of her insight that she gave on her book.
- 2:15If you haven't went and purchased that and begin reading
- 2:18that, go and do that and, and support her in that way.
- 2:23She's got a powerful story, a powerful testimony.
- 2:26JC always used to say on the RFP podcast, the power of a story
- 2:30and what a story can bring and the light that they can bring to
- 2:34people's life. And So what a, what a wonderful
- 2:37way to encourage yourself and to help others, Believe it or not,
- 2:42you're going to interact with people that are hurting, that
- 2:44have been hurt, maybe you yourself have been hurt.
- 2:46And that's a great way for you to work through some things.
- 2:50And she's got some different checkpoints in there.
- 2:53And so hopefully you'll go and check that out.
- 2:55But again, thanks Bridget for coming on last week and sharing
- 2:58your heart and your testimony. And I'm looking forward to
- 3:02furthering with her in the future with some projects and
- 3:05things. Now, James, you said when you
- 3:07started reading this book, you, you almost couldn't put it down.
- 3:10Yeah. Yeah, that's correct.
- 3:13Yeah. Cool.
- 3:13Cool. I'm looking forward to getting a
- 3:15copy of it and reading it. It's listening to her story,
- 3:18listening to the stories that you told me about the book.
- 3:21I'm going to get it pretty soon and I'm going to read it as
- 3:23well. Yeah.
- 3:25So Brett, we've got when this comes out, this is the last
- 3:28episode of May, the next episode won't drop until June.
- 3:31So this is the last time that we'll be able to talk on the
- 3:34air. We've got a 15% discount on all
- 3:37of our cigar stuff. It's May 15th freedom.
- 3:41Go and stock up on that for the summer.
- 3:43Stock up on that for any gifts, Father's Day gifts coming up,
- 3:47things that you can give to. I was listening to the podcast.
- 3:51My son was in the car this last week and we were listening to it
- 3:55and he heard you talking about the hoodie and he leaned over to
- 3:58me and he said, dad, I need that hoodie.
- 4:01Like if Brett talking that great about the hoodie, I've got to
- 4:04get one. Can you get me one?
- 4:05I said sure. He said, dad, do you have any
- 4:07hats? I said it's funny you ask, we
- 4:09I'm actually talking to a designer to create us a custom
- 4:13hat with the patch, the full freedom patch on the front of it
- 4:17and have that ready hopefully by like October.
- 4:19I've got a big event in October. So we've got a couple of things
- 4:22we got going on, couple of things that we're going to be
- 4:24working on. And so hopefully that'll that'll
- 4:28help out a little bit for you to advertise what you believe and
- 4:31support us in a great way. But Brett, how we got Orlando
- 4:35coming up? Oh man, Orlando's going to be
- 4:38fun. We're going down to the National
- 4:40Southern Baptist Convention. Last night our church just voted
- 4:45to make me and my family messengers, and so it's kind of
- 4:49official to the church notes. So we're in a couple weeks.
- 4:52We're heading down South. We talked about this last week,
- 4:55but my vacation Bible school starts on May the 31st and then
- 4:59it ends the night before we go to Orlando.
- 5:02So it's going to be a busy week that week, but it's always good
- 5:05to get away, get down there. You know it, it's a convention,
- 5:09but it's also a time away for my family, a time to rest, recharge
- 5:13a little bit. And I'm looking forward to, I've
- 5:16never took the, I've never taken my boys to Orlando.
- 5:19And then of course, spend a couple of days here at Universal
- 5:22Studios. But what I'm looking forward to
- 5:23the most is again, with the pastors down there and listen,
- 5:28man, if you're listening to this and you're going to be at the
- 5:30convention, please hit us up. But that's what we want.
- 5:34That's what we live for. We want to, we want to hang out
- 5:38with you. You know, we got, we rented a
- 5:39house and we got a couple of guys coming over already.
- 5:43But we want a fellowship with you.
- 5:45We want to talk to you. If you're going to be down
- 5:47there, please, by all means. Hit us up.
- 5:49Yeah, absolutely. That's one of the things that I
- 5:52look forward to the most is just been able to get together with
- 5:57guys Q and other guys from different conventions and
- 6:00different areas that we've made contacts with over the years.
- 6:03And so hopefully you'll let us know.
- 6:05I've got a guy that I went to college with that lives not far
- 6:08from where we're going to be at. He's going to come over and hang
- 6:10out with us. Super excited about that.
- 6:14And man, I'm just excited about being down there with you and
- 6:17our families getting away it. For us, it's like you said, it's
- 6:20a little mini vacation that we get to get away part of it and
- 6:23then refresh our soul to the preaching and then go to the
- 6:26convention and see what's going on with all that.
- 6:29But yeah. We're going to get to see the
- 6:31I'm talking about the doctor, Marcus Merritt.
- 6:34He'll be down there. Hey, has he said anything to you
- 6:37about Parit being down there? Not yet.
- 6:41I did talk to him about Parit the other day and he said that
- 6:44she is doing well. She had taken a little bit of a
- 6:47vacation, but everything for them is back to normal.
- 6:50Where they're at, she said there is no conflict whatsoever.
- 6:54And so she said that they're just waiting on the airlines
- 6:57open back up. So everything's back good
- 6:59rolling. I got nervous because when
- 7:01everything happened with the attacks, I reached out to her
- 7:04and normally she's really good about within a day or so
- 7:06reaching back out to me and she didn't.
- 7:09And so when I was talking to Marcus about a couple of things
- 7:12the other day, she said, yeah, she's doing really good.
- 7:14I just just talked to her and just trying to get a couple
- 7:18things going. So yeah, it's been really good.
- 7:20I'm interested to talk to her because you know, my first, we
- 7:23want to do the Footsteps of Paul trip and that that's the grease
- 7:27trip. And so, you know, if that's
- 7:29still on, if that's still something we can schedule,
- 7:32they've got 2 they and for any of those, any of our listeners
- 7:36interested. And of course, any trip that me
- 7:39or James put on is open to our listeners.
- 7:42So one of the things in this Footsteps of Paul, there's a
- 7:45land tour and there's a there's a water tour where you on a
- 7:51little cruise ship. And so I'm thinking we'll do the
- 7:54cruise ship. But then of course, you know, we
- 7:56got this cruise ship with this Hantavirus and then everybody's
- 7:59scared to go on a cruise ship. You know, I mean, we, we, we
- 8:03Baptist, you know, we ain't scared.
- 8:05No Hantavirus. You know, you ever been in a a
- 8:07nursery with that that ran out of Lysol?
- 8:10I mean, Hantavirus ain't got nothing on that.
- 8:13That's right. Speaking of cruise ship, Brett,
- 8:16I I cannot go without mentioning this today, the time this
- 8:21episode comes out, me and my wife celebrate 15 years today.
- 8:26And so we are she's put up with me this long, haven't ran her
- 8:30off. I think there were probably
- 8:31times that she wanted to run away, but I had her in Idaho
- 8:35that worse, you know, 2400 miles away from civilization and
- 8:39family. And so she probably couldn't get
- 8:41away. But I am thankful that she's put
- 8:43up with me this long. And so Speaking of cruises, this
- 8:46is what reminded me. I just booked our 15th
- 8:49anniversary cruise. We've never been on a cruise
- 8:52before. We're going to Nassau and the
- 8:54Bahamas, four night, 5 day cruise down there.
- 8:59And it's going to be in July after our camps that we have for
- 9:03our youth camp and kids camp. We're getting away for a week,
- 9:06shipping the kids off to grandparents and family and just
- 9:10going and hanging out down there.
- 9:11And I'm looking forward to it. So hopefully I don't come back
- 9:14with with some rat virus. First time it was birds, rats.
- 9:18I don't understand what's going on, but I've heard fantastic
- 9:22thing about cruises, so we're really excited about that as
- 9:24well. Man, that's awesome.
- 9:26It's interesting that your 15 year anniversary is today
- 9:30because in two weeks is my 20 year anniversary.
- 9:33Let's go. I mean, and we've been married
- 9:3620 years and my oldest son, Colin, he graduates college this
- 9:41coming Sunday. And so got a lot of things, a
- 9:44lot of milestones ahead of us in the next two weeks.
- 9:48Yeah, absolutely. Well, with that being said,
- 9:50let's jump in today's episode. We've got some fun things
- 9:53planned for you. A fun episode going into the
- 9:56summer revolving around a couple of things.
- 9:59Let's jump into that right now. For freedom set me free.
- 10:03Not for change, not for guilt, not for Pharisee grace.
- 10:07Let the flame. Now I'm puffing peace, cigars
- 10:09and victory. Justified.
- 10:11Released. Welcome to the For Freedom
- 10:15podcast. This podcast exists to bring the
- 10:18freedom of the gospel for everyday Christians with
- 10:21everyday issues. I ain't saved by dress codes,
- 10:24not by what I eat. I'm covered in the
- 10:26righteousness, washed from head to feet.
- 10:28No tally of tradition, no man made code.
- 10:31Blood bought my freedom. Now I ride that road.
- 10:33They clutch pearls when they see smoke rings rise, but my prey
- 10:37still ascends. Past the legalist cries.
- 10:39Christ plus nothing. That's the real math.
- 10:42So miss me with your fence laws and your extra path.
- 10:45He sat with sinners. I'm sitting with Saints, sipping
- 10:48grace from the bottle. No room for face.
- 10:50I like one for liberty. Toast to the king.
- 10:53Every ash of sermon. Death has lost its sting.
- 10:56For freedom He set me free. Not for change, not for guilt,
- 10:59not for Pharisee Grace. Let the flame, Now I'm puffing
- 11:03peace, cigars and victory justified released.
- 11:07For freedom He set me free. Not for change, not for guilt,
- 11:10not for Pharisee grace. Let the flame now I'm puffing
- 11:14peace, cigars and victory Justified released.
- 11:17Let grace begin now. Here are.
- 11:26Your hosts James Seyfried and Brett Martin.
- 11:47Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the Four Freedom
- 11:49Podcast. Tonight, we're going to put
- 11:51theology aside for a moment and tackle the issue that is divided
- 11:56Baptist. Churches. 4 generations.
- 12:00Today we are going to be talking about something that has been
- 12:04the conflict of many, many church splits.
- 12:07The conflict of many different arguments of which one is better
- 12:12and what is the best. Today we will be talking about
- 12:16the Baptist Potluck Draft coming to you Live from the Family Life
- 12:22Center where sweet tea is cold, the casseroles are hot, and the
- 12:26church ladies are judging every decision that you make.
- 12:30I'm your host, Brett Martin, alongside my Co host James
- 12:34Seyfried. And tonight, we're drafting the
- 12:36Ultimate Baptist Fellowship meal.
- 12:39Now, James, the experts are calling this one one of the
- 12:43deepest potluck classes in years.
- 12:46They've never seen a field like this before.
- 12:49Absolutely, Brett. Elite talent at the dessert
- 12:51table this season. Strong casserole depths and and
- 12:56the second round. This is where it gets difficult
- 12:58when you begin judging and looking through those side
- 13:02dishes of what you're going to pick and where you're going to
- 13:04go. Exactly.
- 13:05And there are already rumors that banana pudding may go
- 13:09earlier than expected. You know, when years past we've
- 13:12been wrong about that, but it's looking like it's going to go
- 13:16quick this year. Yeah, honestly, Brett, if banana
- 13:19pudding falls outside of the top three, someone must have lost
- 13:23their mind. Absolutely.
- 13:24Now let's go over the rules for today's draft.
- 13:28This is a snake draft format and what that means is no trades, no
- 13:34duplicate picks. And once a food is drafted, it
- 13:37is off the board. It is out of play.
- 13:41That's right. And so today me and you are
- 13:44going to go head to head drafting our favorite things of
- 13:47food. We're going to start with a main
- 13:49dish. We're going to head to the side
- 13:51dishes and then we'll be going to our dessert, our drinks, and
- 13:56then we're throwing in a wild card pick as well of some
- 13:59various different things that you may throw onto your plate as
- 14:02well to have a wonderful well put meal put together.
- 14:06Absolutely. And at the end of the episode,
- 14:09you decide what plate wins. We'll be taking our our plates.
- 14:14We'll be posting them on social media.
- 14:16And you get the vote. You have the power to decide who
- 14:21wins the draft tonight. Now before we begin, James, who
- 14:24are your sleeper picks tonight? Sleeper picks, There's a couple
- 14:29of things we're looking at. We're looking at who are the
- 14:31really good things about the funeral potatoes.
- 14:34You know, those are those, those little thin sliced potatoes that
- 14:36come out only at funeral times, veteran presents.
- 14:40I mean, they're there when times get tough, Strong church
- 14:44history. It travels well, it stays warm.
- 14:47It's got that cheesy layer on top of them.
- 14:49If you make them that way, they're they're a dime a dozen
- 14:53to get one of those. That's a solid pick.
- 14:56Now personally, I think deviled eggs are underrated this year.
- 15:00Yeah, strong flavor profile, dangerous when it comes to close
- 15:03quarters. That little paprika sprinkling
- 15:06on top of it, it can make for an eye appealing grab there on that
- 15:10side dish. That's a fairpoint.
- 15:13And when you get a deviled egg, you don't know what Pickles
- 15:16you're going to get. Are you going to get sweet
- 15:18Pickles? Are you going to get deal?
- 15:20You just don't know. So it is a risk, but is it is a
- 15:24risky move tonight? Absolutely.
- 15:26And before the clock gets started, Brett, let's talk
- 15:28through a couple of commentaries of some of these items that
- 15:32we're going to jump through as we begin to walk through this
- 15:35analysis of the potluck items that we're going to be talking
- 15:40through. This year's draft class, it's
- 15:42loaded with desserts, man. The desserts are just full.
- 15:44The table's full. I feel like every time we go to
- 15:48a potluck like this, you, you just, you'd never have enough
- 15:51desserts. And so you got to have another
- 15:52dessert that comes into it. Experts are calling this one of
- 15:56the deepest potluck classes in recent memories.
- 15:58What's your thoughts on this, Brett?
- 16:01You know, I'll tell you what you've got the, the, the strange
- 16:04picks today, the wild card picks.
- 16:06But then you've got the fan favorites.
- 16:09You've got the ones that, you know, we're always going to be
- 16:11at the top. And of course, we cannot talk
- 16:14about the draft without talking about fried chicken.
- 16:17I mean, fried chicken remains the gold standard of the Baptist
- 16:20potluck draft. I mean, it's still the safest
- 16:23overall pick in Baptist history. You know, you may, you may get
- 16:27criticized for going traditional, but let me tell you
- 16:30something. Fried chicken delivers every
- 16:33Sunday, Any given Sunday, it delivers.
- 16:36You can never go wrong siding with the fried chicken.
- 16:39That's a foundational ministry food.
- 16:42Yeah, Brett, what about Mac and cheese?
- 16:44Right. Mac and cheese, it comes in, it
- 16:45comes in strong every year. Kids love it, adults love it,
- 16:50grandparents love it, teenagers love it.
- 16:52Everyone loves a good dish of Mac and cheese.
- 16:55The only problem with Mac and cheese is sometimes you get that
- 16:58Mac and cheese that's been overcooked too long, right?
- 17:01It just turns in the Bush. But then you've got that other
- 17:04one that's been baked perfectly, that's got the perfect cheese
- 17:07crust on top, that's got the gooey middle as you begin to go
- 17:10through it. The noodles aren't mushy.
- 17:12They're great. So so there's a little bit of
- 17:15plug and play that goes here with the Mac and cheese, but
- 17:18it's just one of those items that it can be a big, huge bust
- 17:22or it could be the biggest upside to make your team the
- 17:25greatest team of all time. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 17:28And of course, before we get into this, we have to talk
- 17:31probably about one of the most controversial prospects in this
- 17:35year's draft, and that is the potato salad.
- 17:38I mean, we've got a high ceiling.
- 17:40We've got a dangerous floor. Listen, when it comes to salad,
- 17:45when it's good, it's elite. When it's bad, it can divide the
- 17:49church worse than the color of the carpet.
- 17:51There are major chemistry concerns when it comes to potato
- 17:55salad. Somebody's amp makes the
- 17:57greatest potato salad on earth, and everybody else thinks
- 18:00there's does too. So there's a lot of divided
- 18:03opinion on the field this year when it comes to potato salad,
- 18:07but I'm interested to see which way we'll go this year.
- 18:10Yeah, and and you know, as we throw this through here real
- 18:14quick, Brett, the Falkland store ball food, right?
- 18:17The guys that show, the guys that show up with the Bow Berry,
- 18:21I don't know if y'all have Bojangles were here, Bow Berry
- 18:22biscuits or the KFC chicken bucket.
- 18:25And all of a sudden they've brought in a pretty good heavy
- 18:28hitter with some food that they don't have to prepare.
- 18:32But it's there, it's made right. The pre made cookies from
- 18:34Walmart that are store bought that are thrown in there.
- 18:38The talents there. The idea is there, but sometimes
- 18:42people would rather go for that homemade home feeling, grandma
- 18:45style cooking versus just going for the KFC bucket of chicken.
- 18:49Exactly, but I'll tell you what there there are a couple of
- 18:52exceptions when you're sitting in the family life center in the
- 18:56fellowship hall and they, the doors open and the the buckets
- 19:00come in maybe not from KFC, but from the local gas station.
- 19:04A fried chicken that was made down down at the pump and go,
- 19:08man, that can be some of the best fried chicken on the earth.
- 19:12You're excited about it. You want to get to the line 1st
- 19:15and fill your plate up, get white and dark meat, a breast
- 19:18and a leg. And so it is up in the air about
- 19:22that. One of the last things that
- 19:23we'll talk about before we go into our draft or the sweet tea
- 19:26options, it is the undisputed #1 drink prospect in the South.
- 19:31There's not even a close second. That's a franchise beverage.
- 19:36You draft sweet tea early and you build around it.
- 19:39Absolutely. All right, Brett, let's jump
- 19:41into it. We're going to flip a coin.
- 19:43You got a coin ready? So I'll flip and you call all.
- 19:46Right here we go. Tails never fails.
- 19:53Tails. You Tails it is, baby.
- 19:55Let's go. All right, let's go main dishes.
- 19:58All right main dish on the clock I'm jumping in first here we go
- 20:02my main dish pic as we walk through this, as we have been
- 20:05walking through these items, I there's one that that stuck out
- 20:09in my mind and I was reading through the list of things we
- 20:11got a good smoked brisket. I'm throwing that on my plate.
- 20:15I'm jumping into the brisket for me, I'm.
- 20:18I'm taking that with a little bit of BBQ sauce, rub it on to
- 20:21the side and it looked perfect. I saw the juices flowing out as
- 20:25I picked it up with the tongs. It is there and it's ready for
- 20:29the taking. All right, let's see.
- 20:31Going on to my pick is we are going to play it safe and we're
- 20:37going to go with the fried chicken fried.
- 20:40Chicken. This This isn't the homemade
- 20:42fried chicken. This isn't the KFC fried
- 20:44chicken. This is the gas station fried
- 20:47chicken. I played my I showed my hand a
- 20:49little bit early with that, But and when, when, when, when they
- 20:53walk through those doors with with the with the with the box
- 20:56of chicken from the local gas station.
- 20:59You just you know, you're, you're, you're you put it on top
- 21:02of your head. Your tongue will beat your
- 21:03brains out trying to get to it. Absolutely we are, we are going
- 21:06with the the. Fried chicken for my first pick
- 21:09on the main dish. All right, so that means I get
- 21:12the next pick in the side dishes.
- 21:14That's right, first round pick of the side dish.
- 21:16That's right. So I am going to, I'm going to
- 21:20go against what people would mainly pick and I'm going to
- 21:24pick fried oakery. Fried.
- 21:27It's going to be my side dish. A lot of these others are good
- 21:32but when I see fried okra on the counter I'm going to get it
- 21:36every single time. Is a go to standard for my plate
- 21:41and if I don't have room I'll make room.
- 21:43You know what up at a potluck you fill out your plate when
- 21:46when you run out of room you start stacking like you.
- 21:49Have a second. Layer start going up then fried
- 21:53okra is something I'm picking every time.
- 21:55You know, Brett Fried Okra is one of those ones that it's,
- 21:57it's a dangerous pick for you. Yeah, it could come out super
- 22:01soggy and not done all the way, or it could be overdone and and
- 22:05cooked too much and then it's got that burnt taste in your
- 22:08mouth. So, you know, and a potluck
- 22:11having fried okra on the table could be one of those things
- 22:15that you just really wasn't prepared for.
- 22:17And or you may pick up one that's like the best one you've
- 22:19ever had. And, and the key is to know who
- 22:23made it. If you know who made it, you've
- 22:25got a good indication that it's going to be a good round this
- 22:28year. Yeah, you know, for me, I'm
- 22:31going with my safe bet because I've never met one that I didn't
- 22:35like and that's a deviled egg. Deviled eggs with my, with my
- 22:39brisket. I'm rolling with that.
- 22:43And so that, that that's one of those ones.
- 22:45I've been at four different churches, 5 if you cut my home
- 22:49church, and I've yet to come across a deviled egg that wasn't
- 22:52absolutely delicious. So even with the sweet Pickles,
- 22:57even with the dill Pickles, my father-in-law who throws in a
- 23:00little brisket with, with it, like there hasn't been one that
- 23:03I've had that I didn't like. So it's one of those safe, like
- 23:06honey hole, you're going to give it to the guy and he's going to
- 23:09score a touchdown with it. So I'm I'm going with that.
- 23:10I'm going with deviled eggs. You know, deviled eggs is a
- 23:13great pick. It would, it is my favorite
- 23:16actually, I would have picked deviled eggs, but I was going
- 23:20for more popular. Not a lot of people like deviled
- 23:23eggs. It is one of my favorite so I
- 23:26will give you that great pick. All right, I get to pick the
- 23:28first dessert as we roll out the dessert side.
- 23:31If you know me, you know me well, and you know that if this
- 23:35dessert is on the table and I get a chance to get it, I'm
- 23:39going to go all in. And so my first round pick for
- 23:43the dessert has to go to the chocolate pie.
- 23:46And so I'm jumping in. Chocolate pie all the way.
- 23:49And yeah. Chocolate pie is a great choice.
- 23:53Great choice. All right, from me, I, this is
- 23:58one of those things, if I see it, I'm going to get it now.
- 24:00And, and that is, of course, I'm going, I'm going popular.
- 24:04I'm going the top of the list. I'm going banana pudding now the
- 24:09banana now the banana pudding that comes out of out of a box
- 24:12is good. Don't get me wrong.
- 24:14I'll never say no to it. Get that banana pudding that was
- 24:18that was homemade, did not come out of a box that they actually
- 24:23put in the oven, baked it in the oven.
- 24:26Baked. OK, you're talking baked banana
- 24:28pudding. Baked, you know, OK.
- 24:30Homemade from flour baked in the oven.
- 24:33Banana pudding, not out of a box.
- 24:36The box stuff is good, but man, the elite level is that banana
- 24:40pudding that's homemade that grandma used to make.
- 24:43She's passed down the recipe. This is the best banana pudding
- 24:47on the man and I'll never say no to it.
- 24:49So pick on the dessert is going to be banana pudding.
- 24:53I got to, I got to give you a little little input here on
- 24:56banana pudding. I've never had baked banana
- 24:58pudding until I went to our coach football a couple years
- 25:03ago right before COVID here at the public school and churches
- 25:07sponsored the meal, but pregame meal.
- 25:10And so I got to go to all these different churches and we went
- 25:12to Little River Baptist Church and they had baked banana
- 25:15pudding and I was like, I don't know about this baked banana
- 25:19pudding. Like I don't know if I like
- 25:20this. They they were all the coaches
- 25:22know. Listen, you've got to get some
- 25:23pastor like this is great. I took a bite of it.
- 25:26Fantastic. I've never had it before baked
- 25:28like that. Oh my goodness, it was so good.
- 25:30But one other here. This is likely some of these
- 25:32sleeper things because every make everyone makes banana
- 25:35pudding a little different, right.
- 25:36Some people thinly slice their bananas and they're like perfect
- 25:39mixture of the two. We have a lady at my last church
- 25:43and my wife does not like banana pudding at all, but if she made
- 25:47her banana pudding she was getting there.
- 25:48Her name was Amy and Amy this is how much care she put it.
- 25:53It's all about the care that you put into the banana pudding that
- 25:55you make it. She took each and every vanilla
- 25:58wafer and put peanut butter in between the vanilla wafers and
- 26:02made peanut butter vanilla wafer sandwiches and put those vanilla
- 26:06wafer sandwiches into her banana pudding.
- 26:09Not just regular wafers, right? She's throwing a little extra
- 26:12care in there. And so you have the peanut
- 26:14butter vanilla wafers, you have the banana pudding, you have the
- 26:17bananas, you have the whipped cream.
- 26:18You throw that into one bite. Oh my goodness, you talking
- 26:21about some good banana pudding? It's the best banana pudding
- 26:24I've ever put in my mouth. Wow.
- 26:26I'll tell you before we move on, I've got a banana pudding story
- 26:29too. I'm not going to tell you the
- 26:30church or the OR any names. I'm going to change the names to
- 26:33protect the innocent, but we were going to a church.
- 26:36One time we visited a Church of a friend of mine and his mom
- 26:41brought banana pudding to the church.
- 26:43And it was an independent Fundamental Baptist Church.
- 26:45And she had used to be in IFB, but she wasn't anymore, but she
- 26:50was back visiting, and she had brought some banana pudding.
- 26:54And the people in the church loved it.
- 26:57I mean, they scraped the bottom of the bowl and they kept asking
- 27:01her, what's your recipe? What's your recipe?
- 27:03I've got to make this. It is so great.
- 27:05And she kept saying, I'm sorry, it's a family recipe.
- 27:08I promised I wouldn't tell anybody.
- 27:10What? Why you know what was in it and
- 27:13and what and what made it good. I wouldn't give the recipe out.
- 27:17I'm sorry. Everybody asked for she deny and
- 27:19I thought that was kind of odd because that was outside of her,
- 27:23outside of her character. So later on, come to find out
- 27:26the reason why she didn't tell anybody is because the secret
- 27:29ingredient was banana rum. Tell anybody in the IFB church
- 27:35that the secret ingredient was banana rum.
- 27:37So she was keeping it a secret. That's awesome.
- 27:40All right, moving on to the drink category.
- 27:42And I'm going to tell you, I mean, I, you know you, you've
- 27:45got your populars, you've got, you know, your, your rare picks,
- 27:50but you know, I'm going to go the safe pick.
- 27:53It's my pick. I'm going, I'm going safe, safe
- 27:56bet, strong pick. Sweet tea.
- 28:00Tea is going to be my pick. It's always a fan favorite at
- 28:04the Baptist potluck. And So what we're going strong
- 28:07with not saccharine, not unsweet, not not swell, but
- 28:13sugar tea. Absolutely.
- 28:15Come on, come on. All right, You took my pick.
- 28:17That's the first one where you took my pick, Brett.
- 28:19So I have to go to my backup, my second pick.
- 28:22We're in the South, we're in North Carolina, we're in Tier 1
- 28:26country. I'm taking tier one as my drink.
- 28:29It's the, it's the drink of the South.
- 28:31It's the flavor of the South. My wife did not like it.
- 28:34Now she'll actually go to a restaurant and she'll order a
- 28:37tier one if it's on the fountain tap.
- 28:39So we're taking tier one and then we're throwing in this wild
- 28:43card here. We got a wild card Baptist
- 28:45potluck wild card round where it's your hodgepodge of
- 28:48appetizers, your various different things that didn't
- 28:51quite make it into the guides around.
- 28:53They're not really a main course meal.
- 28:56They're not really a casserole. They're just sort of there.
- 28:59These are the people that just throw in a couple of things.
- 29:01And so my pick for this is the Buffalo chicken dip.
- 29:06I'm going all the way on the dip.
- 29:08Absolutely great pick. Great pick.
- 29:12All right, my pick for the Baptist potluck wildcards is I'm
- 29:17going to go with one on here that I am excited about and that
- 29:22is the Rotel dip. You know, it's not like gold
- 29:26standard of, you know, traditional, but man, if you got
- 29:29a Rotel dip on on on the board, on the on the counter, I'm
- 29:34probably going to go for it every time.
- 29:36Rotel dip I think is a good choice.
- 29:39All right, well, we'll be posting those on our social
- 29:42media page. You take a vote of which meal
- 29:45you would prefer if that plate was in front of you.
- 29:48And what a great time we had with that and just having a
- 29:51little bit of fun with it. But before we move on, I'm going
- 29:54to go through and I'm going to give you my second pitch real
- 29:56quick. All right, My second pics were
- 29:59Maine dish chicken and dumplings, side dish Mac and
- 30:03cheese. Dessert was Oreo delight.
- 30:07That was my second picture drinks for my second pick was
- 30:11doctor pepper and my and my wild card.
- 30:14Second pick was cracked chicken. All right, my second picks were
- 30:19chicken casserole Mac and cheese.
- 30:24Or. Yeah, yeah, Mac and cheese is
- 30:26number 2. Pecan pie for my dessert, I had
- 30:31Cheerwine was my #2 my number one was sweet tea.
- 30:33So I had to go that. And then my number, my wild card
- 30:37was Velveeta dip, which is like Rotel dip.
- 30:39It's through the same thing. But yeah, that step.
- 30:43Awesome. All right, Brett, as we close
- 30:45this episode out, we were sent a picture this week.
- 30:49It was called the five pillars of old fashioned preaching.
- 30:53What happens is the IFB discovers this thing called
- 30:56ChatGPT and they create some fun things.
- 31:00And So what we did is I pulled this up and we're going to talk
- 31:04through. It's Jon Hamlin.
- 31:06He's preaching. And I don't know if this is a
- 31:08quote. I don't know if he made this.
- 31:09I don't know if someone made this.
- 31:11We'll post it on our social media as well.
- 31:13But it says in a high tech error, there's a vital need to
- 31:17return to the antique style of homiletics, right?
- 31:20Homiletics, the style of preaching, these five pillars
- 31:24represent the foundational preaching style required
- 31:28required get this required to spark the Prairie of fire of the
- 31:34spiritual revival that we need today.
- 31:37And so he he's got it broken into two different categories,
- 31:40the crafting of the message and the power of the delivery.
- 31:44So Brett, I'm going to talk start with the first one and
- 31:47we're going to just diagnose each of these and each of the
- 31:51five different ones there. He's got a he's got a fixed one
- 31:53that's at the very bottom and we'll hit at the very end the
- 31:56first one we'll start on the crafting the message.
- 31:58It says that you must have authoritarian preaching
- 32:02prioritize the delivery of scripture over personal stories.
- 32:06So people will remember God's word.
- 32:10Absolutely. Because when you're trying to
- 32:13get a message from the word of God, the first thing you need to
- 32:17do is think about how you're going to deliver it.
- 32:19I'm not asking how you study it that that.
- 32:22Don't worry about that. No, don't study.
- 32:24Ignore commentaries or reading through the passage or any
- 32:27original languages. You need to think about just how
- 32:29you're going to deliver it. Absolutely.
- 32:31How's the authoritarian there? Which is funny that he put this
- 32:35as #1 because Brett, how many times is the story of the pastor
- 32:40or some event that happened that week the highlight of the entire
- 32:43message? And the word of God is the the
- 32:47we opened up with the Scripture and that's about it.
- 32:49Like we walk away from Scripture and we tell stories and we just
- 32:52story tell the whole time. Exactly.
- 32:54Because that is that that's that's the kind of the gold
- 32:57standard of the IFB message. And it's the first thing on the
- 33:00list for putting the message together is being authoritative
- 33:04and getting stories out. Yeah. #2 Brett, jump into it. #2
- 33:09is articulate preaching. It says view words as a master
- 33:13Craftsman, use his favorite tools to ensure clarity.
- 33:19And so we got to make sure that we get all the cliches, all the
- 33:22colloquialisms in there, make sure you know, you, we, we get
- 33:27those, you know, put that in your tailpipe and smoke it.
- 33:30And I get those words in there. So people will remember because
- 33:34that's the most important thing is they remember, they remember
- 33:38how well you delivered the sermon.
- 33:40And that's what we want to be. You know we don't.
- 33:42You know the message of the sermon is secondary to how you
- 33:45delivered it. Absolutely.
- 33:47You know those those catchy statements of don't let the door
- 33:50hit you where the good Lords bless you, brother.
- 33:53Amen. Right.
- 33:53We want to be able to throw those out at any given time.
- 33:56All right, listen, I will tell you that God bless him, but JC
- 34:01is so good at that. He knows those sayings that
- 34:04he'll throw them out. And it is hilarious when he does
- 34:07that. All right, so that's crafting
- 34:09the message. You got the authoritative
- 34:10preaching. You got the articulate
- 34:12preaching. Now we get to the power of
- 34:14delivery. Now he's begins to walk through
- 34:16when you deliver this message, you got to have aggressive
- 34:19preaching. All right, we're we're staying
- 34:22with a you. Forgot animated.
- 34:23Well, that that's at the bottom, we're going to come back to that
- 34:25because that's, that's part of how we preach.
- 34:29I think, I think this was written as the top 2 on both
- 34:32sides and then he went down to the bottom.
- 34:34I think so aggressive preaching, true preaching, right?
- 34:39True preaching. This is how he has it listed.
- 34:41Always demands a decision after either to get saved or to get
- 34:48right. So if you're not preaching for a
- 34:50decision, you're not preaching at all.
- 34:53So, Brett, thoughts on that? Man, I just look at that word
- 34:56aggressive. Aggressive.
- 34:58I mean you, you mean you got to be always aggressive.
- 35:01You got to be 90 to nothing the whole time.
- 35:03Your your whole point is, is to RIP someone a new one.
- 35:07Don't worry about encouraging or edifying someone.
- 35:10You're just there to to RIP, to RIP them up, RIP them up one
- 35:14side, down, down the other. Be aggressive the whole time.
- 35:17Love it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:19Now this next one, but that you're going to get to I I do
- 35:22agree with this one. This one I believe is it is it's
- 35:25it's vital like you have to have this if you're going to be
- 35:27preaching, right. I've not been sarcastic here.
- 35:29I'm I've been, I've been honest. Yeah, anointed preaching.
- 35:32It says the touch of God is the essential element that makes
- 35:37thundering the thundering tenants effective.
- 35:40And you know, yeah, you're right.
- 35:42Annoying preaching and. If you're not bathing your
- 35:45message in prayer and you're not seeking those face of the Lord
- 35:48before you preach, then you probably shouldn't even get up
- 35:50and talk at all. And so I agree with that.
- 35:53There needs to be anointing and you're preaching and it needs to
- 35:56come from the Lord. And then it gets to really the,
- 35:59the, the, the eclipses of all of the preaching of the IFB and
- 36:05it's animated preaching, right? Delivery should be, what does it
- 36:09say here be a flame of fire never resembling a lullaby or a
- 36:14book report. You got to be animated.
- 36:17There's no, there's no way if you're not, if you're not
- 36:20jumping around, if you're not Billy Sundy jumping on top of
- 36:22the pulpit and raising your fist and going crazy, How are they
- 36:26going to listen to you like you? You've got to be animated.
- 36:28Now, I'm all for moving around. I move around all the time.
- 36:31I, I know what I'm preaching, so I have the freedom to move
- 36:34around. But but I do understand you've
- 36:38got to have a balance here of preaching with delivery and not
- 36:42just be monotone. But the way this is saying is if
- 36:46you're not moving, if you're not animated, you're not going to
- 36:49have a powerful message. Right.
- 36:51And, and I think, I think that I mean, in all seriousness, there
- 36:54doesn't need to be a balance. You know, there need to be times
- 36:57where you get people's attention and there needs to be times when
- 37:01you just stand there very solemn and because of the subject
- 37:04matter, you always go off the tone of the passage that you're
- 37:07preaching. You know, and then I'll be
- 37:09honest, going from an IFB background into kind of the
- 37:13Southern Baptist searches, you know, when I pull out the IFB
- 37:17style preaching, it kind of shocks people.
- 37:19Sometimes I'll throw, I'll throw it in there every once in a
- 37:22while to keep people on their toes, keep people on their feet.
- 37:25I am for animated preaching. But you know, we're not going 9
- 37:29into nothing all the time, running the pews and jump in the
- 37:31pulpit. And then of course, this is the
- 37:35sixth pillar of the five pillars and it is old time fire.
- 37:41Uh oh, James. We didn't alliterate.
- 37:44We didn't alliterate. This one doesn't start with an
- 37:46A. We did not alliterate what is he
- 37:48doing. Could we improve this?
- 37:49Could we think of an A word to go here?
- 37:52I don't know. We'll think about it, all right,
- 37:55Old time fire. We need preaching to spread
- 37:57across the country like a Prairie fire once more.
- 38:01And you know, that's a good statement, maybe.
- 38:03I got accelerated fire. Accelerated fire.
- 38:06There you go. There you go.
- 38:07But we have we have to get the old time in there.
- 38:10That's what I'm saying. He had to get the old time we
- 38:13got to get back to the 50s because they didn't have any
- 38:15problems at all. No, no, we.
- 38:17Got to get back to the old the old time of the the accelerated
- 38:21fire, accelerated old time fire and man, AI couldn't have done
- 38:26any better. That's right.
- 38:27Hey, I love it. Hey, one of the things that I
- 38:29love about this Brett is, is he talks about the exposition of
- 38:32Scripture. What happened?
- 38:34Yeah, it's. The fine print.
- 38:36Yeah, down there, the fine print, he talks about how you
- 38:38should expose the Scripture and not preach preferences, but
- 38:41preach the Bible. So, you know, those things are
- 38:43in there if you're going to have old time preaching that just
- 38:46like Paul preached, you know, as Jesus was preaching and teaching
- 38:50on this land. I mean, he's really pulling out
- 38:52the tenants of what Jesus and and Paul were preaching and
- 38:55Peter in those days. Well, hey, listen, you know
- 38:58Paul. Paul wasn't right because Paul
- 39:00didn't have the King James. What?
- 39:02You're right, you're right. So you know this is better than
- 39:05Paul. He corrected it so right, right.
- 39:09King James came along so. So before we close out the
- 39:12episode, let's real quick talk about our three favorite
- 39:17episodes and moments from this year.
- 39:20I'll start, of course, one of my favorite episodes this year was
- 39:27the Erica Pacey interviews. I thought that that episode, it
- 39:32got the highest height, the most anticipation.
- 39:36We had that episode scheduled Eric Pacey for I think over a
- 39:41year or more. Yeah.
- 39:44Yeah. And so we've but you know, you,
- 39:46you're really close to Eric. And so to have him on there and
- 39:50just to think back to me being at Piles Anderson as a student,
- 39:54having Eric Capaci come up and preach in Chapel, you know, and
- 40:00I fell in love with Eric Capaci's preaching then.
- 40:02And I've been to his church several times in Hot Springs,
- 40:05used to date a girl from there. And, you know, I love Eric
- 40:09Capaci and I love the way he's being used.
- 40:11I love his story. And, you know, I'm glad that we
- 40:15got a chance to talk to Eric from the podcast.
- 40:18Yeah. You know, my number one favorite
- 40:21moment of this last year was probably the connection that we
- 40:25made with James Spurgeon. I appreciate what he's done with
- 40:28the Texas Baptist Crucible and just the friendship that we've
- 40:32developed. We got to hang out while I was
- 40:34in Texas this last year and last almost a year ago now at the
- 40:38convention last year, we were able to have him come back on a
- 40:41couple of weeks ago and just talk to sort of where he's at
- 40:45and what he's going through. I just appreciate his heart in
- 40:48the matter. He's super humble and thankful
- 40:51that that friendship has been developed.
- 40:53He actually text me this morning and just said, hey, great
- 40:56message, your great episode last week.
- 40:58And so I do appreciate that and the connections that we've made,
- 41:02the friendships that we've made #2 for me would be that Eric
- 41:06Pacey interview. Again, just being able to talk
- 41:09through that with him was great. And I just able to share some of
- 41:14our thoughts and where we're at him to share his heart of where
- 41:17he's at. May not agree with everything
- 41:19that that was said or done, but I gave the opportunity for him
- 41:22to share. And then I think that that is
- 41:26one of the great things that we get to do is allow people to
- 41:29come on and share their story. We don't necessarily critique
- 41:32their story, although we may not agree with everything they say
- 41:35or do, but we do get them to share their story and then to be
- 41:39an encouragement in that area and so do enjoy that as well.
- 41:44Brett, what's your #2? Building off of that, my number
- 41:472 is James Spurgeon as well. He's just easy to talk to.
- 41:52He's a great guy. He's got a great story.
- 41:54He's comes out of that IFB world.
- 41:57He knows a lot about it, so it was a great episode just to get
- 42:01to hang out with him again. I always enjoy talking to him.
- 42:04I don't mind having him back on in the future.
- 42:07Anytime I get to talk to James Spurgeon is a good day.
- 42:11I really enjoyed our episode. I like the little game that we
- 42:14played. Was it Uncle Chuck or not?
- 42:16Yeah. Thought that was great.
- 42:18I was glad he won, you know, so I was.
- 42:22I was real happy for that, James.
- 42:24So James is my #2 And then, of course, my number three pick for
- 42:28a favorite episode. And you may or may not have
- 42:31picked this, but mine is Father Kelly.
- 42:33The reason is because, you know, Israel has such a big place in
- 42:37our hearts and, you know, just to go there and we, I got more
- 42:43out of this second trip than I did the first one.
- 42:46We got to go to more places, do more things, see things that
- 42:51weren't discovered before, learn more about all these areas.
- 42:55And then Magdala, I thought was just going to be just a little
- 42:59stop. We've already seen it once.
- 43:00Yeah, the synagogue is cool. It's it's a synagogue that Jesus
- 43:04preached in. That'll always be awesome and
- 43:06will always be a highlight. But I thought we'll get out when
- 43:09see synagogue, we'll leave. Man, Father Kelly, man he come
- 43:12in there and then he took us on a journey.
- 43:15He, he, he, we, we told us things that we didn't know, took
- 43:19us back to the center and just open up the word of God to us.
- 43:23Even though he's a Catholic, Catholic priest, he reached
- 43:26across denominations, really spoke to us so much though, that
- 43:31we had him come on the podcast. He's got a great story, great.
- 43:34He's had a interesting life. And man, my Father Kelly episode
- 43:39is definitely on my top three. Yeah, that was a great one.
- 43:43And Magdala, I was excited about going to Magdala.
- 43:46It was one of those spots that as I look back on, it was going
- 43:49to be one of my highlights because I just didn't expect it.
- 43:52And then it just blew me out of the water again.
- 43:54So yeah, I appreciate that and I I think that'll be great.
- 43:58The last one, mine, it's going to be cliche, but I enjoyed
- 44:03having Bridget on just last week.
- 44:06I had actually tried lining her up a year and a half ago when
- 44:10Shiny Happy People came out and we did a review on Shiny Happy
- 44:13people. We talked through that she had
- 44:16some influence in the Gothard movement and I asked her to come
- 44:20on and share during that time. She had agreed.
- 44:23And then she said, you know, there's some things going on,
- 44:25don't feel comfortable at this time.
- 44:27And I never pressure anyone to come on anyways.
- 44:29And so I said, hey, thanks for thanks for thinking of us and,
- 44:32and talk thinking about it and praying about it.
- 44:34And so then when her book came out and I reached out to her,
- 44:36this was my exponse about my thought of response.
- 44:39She's already told me no once. She's not going to tell me no.
- 44:41She's going to tell me no again. But I'm going to send her a
- 44:44request anyways. And so I was thankful that she
- 44:46came home. She shared her story.
- 44:49I'm excited about talking more with her.
- 44:52I think she's got a lot to to give to our audience.
- 44:55And I think she's got a lot to give in just her hurt and trauma
- 45:00and abuse that she went through and how she can help others.
- 45:03And so excited for that. And I'm thankful for that.
- 45:06I'm excited to see where that's going to go and how that
- 45:08interview is going to impact other people.
- 45:10Oh man, that's a good thing. Yeah, that was a great episode,
- 45:13Bridget. I really enjoyed that.
- 45:14Yeah. All right.
- 45:15Well, Brett, I'm excited about the future.
- 45:18We'll be seeing each other in just a couple of weeks and then
- 45:21we'll be going down to Nicaragua together to do a pastors
- 45:23conference. Lee has been text us while we've
- 45:25been recording and so looking forward to that.
- 45:29Hopefully you'll come and see us in Florida in just a couple of
- 45:32weeks as we're down there and I'll be looking for our summer
- 45:35drops of different episodes. But until next time, we're going
- 45:39to sign off one last time for the season as we start back in
- 45:43August. I believe it'll be August is
- 45:45when we start back up. Brett, to God be the glory.
- 45:49Great things he has done. Found my new name.
- 45:53Found that good grace. Found that healing when the
- 45:57tears fell down my face when I found my beginning.
- 46:01It has no ending. I found that second chance from
- 46:03my best friend, from my biggest. I've been singing ever since I
