- 0:10Our number 2 Millary Condon welcome back is the Iowa Sports
- 0:13Radio Network. Appreciate you being with us and
- 0:17listening wherever you are in the state of Iowa on winning of
- 0:20our many Philly, it's throughout the state of anywhere on the I
- 0:23Heart app. We will take you until 2:00 off
- 0:25the bench. At that time, Lucas Strain and
- 0:28Sean Roberts 2 until 5 overtime, Iowa At that time.
- 0:31Let's talk some baseball. It's still Detroit 1 Cleveland
- 0:35zip. We're in the bottom of the
- 0:36fourth. There's been a little bit of a
- 0:37delay. Something got broken by a foul
- 0:39ball. Must have been a camera.
- 0:41Anyways, the grounds crew is cleaning that up.
- 0:44So we bring aboard Matt Snyder who's watching this intently.
- 0:47Hello, Matt, Trenton, Ken, how are you?
- 0:50They did a great job in breaking that just in time for our
- 0:53segment. Beautiful.
- 0:54Just everything slowed down while we're talking here, that
- 0:57people have time to tune in and listen to us.
- 0:59Absolutely. You know what, I want to start
- 1:01with you and we'll get to the games.
- 1:02We'll get to the series in just a second.
- 1:03I saw something over the weekend that I found absolutely
- 1:06impossible and I didn't want to bring it up on the air because I
- 1:09want to wait for you as you're a Hall of Fame voter.
- 1:11I know this is not this is not one of the votes that you will.
- 1:14I don't think I cast your ballot for the, but the Ford Ford Frick
- 1:18Award that. I find it hard to believe that.
- 1:23Let me just run down this list. You can only vote for one of
- 1:25these guys, apparently. Do I have that right?
- 1:29I I'm actually not incredibly well versed on that because it
- 1:33doesn't have anything to do with me right as a voter.
- 1:36So I don't know but. Listen to these broadcasters and
- 1:39I'm pretty sure only one of them will gain entrance.
- 1:41Brian Anderson, terrific job. Joe Buck is Joe Buck.
- 1:45Skip Carey, unbelievable career. Renee Cardanis terrific career.
- 1:50Gary Cohen with the Mets, Jacques Ducet, who called Expo's
- 1:53games forever. Dwayne Kiper's been with the
- 1:55Giants for a lifetime. John Rooney started with the
- 1:58Twins, went to the Cardinals, Dan Schulman, Sunday Night
- 2:02Baseball, now the Blue Jays, and John Sterling, who called Yankee
- 2:06games for a million years. How do you limit that to one of
- 2:09these guys? I and, and you know, you're
- 2:12right in thinking about it, We do it.
- 2:14It seems like every year there's one guy, like I remember the
- 2:18year Pat Hughes got in, for example.
- 2:19It's always just one. So yeah, it must just be 1.
- 2:23I don't know if you're allowed to vote for whatever and then
- 2:25the person who gets the most votes is the one who gets in,
- 2:28but I definitely know that there's only one that gets in
- 2:31and that's a that's quite a list.
- 2:33Like, man, I don't know who I maybe skip Carey is it, but I
- 2:38feel like it's my I feel like I'm just going back to who was
- 2:42the one who started the longest to go instead of like who's the,
- 2:46I mean, you know, and I got to say just really, really quick
- 2:49because it's not our primary focus here, but so many people
- 2:54hate Joe Buck. I don't think it's unfair.
- 2:56I actually think he's really, really good.
- 2:58It's just because my working theory in baseball is we watch
- 3:02all of our regional announcers all season and then you get to
- 3:05the playoffs and it's an unbiased party now.
- 3:08And so you always think, Oh, they're rooting for the other
- 3:10team. So through them, I think that's
- 3:12how it goes. I think he's the best in the
- 3:14business. And you absolutely nailed it.
- 3:16And unfortunately, why can't they at minimum get him in one
- 3:19of these wild card series? All right, He doesn't want to do
- 3:21the whole thing. He's employed by and he's making
- 3:2310s of millions of dollars a year.
- 3:25Can't they say let's get 2, maybe three games out of you,
- 3:28Joe? Let's get him back in the booth
- 3:30at least for a wild card series. You, you got a small number.
- 3:33Can you give him a call, Matt? I do not but hey, we both we
- 3:37both went to IU so maybe there you.
- 3:39Go well he worked last night. It's not like he couldn't have
- 3:42got to wherever by tonight. I'm with you 100%.
- 3:45Well, let's get to the here and now.
- 3:46And we're watching Detroit and Cleveland, which will be a
- 3:49remarkable series bigger collapse.
- 3:51Tigers, at least they're in. Or the Mets with all of that
- 3:55payroll. Has to be the Mets, isn't it?
- 3:58Oh, 100% yeah, the Tigers still squeaked in.
- 4:02I, I, you know, I said a few things this morning on our
- 4:04gambling show early edge and I said, first of all, we can't, we
- 4:09shouldn't view the Reds as some like Colorado, 2007 Colorado
- 4:14Rockies team that had this major surge and get in.
- 4:16Do you know the Reds were 33 and 32 after the All Star break.
- 4:20They were 14 and 11 in September, which is good, but
- 4:22it's not not amazing like they they were not a party crasher as
- 4:27much as the Mets just left the door wide open and said please
- 4:30take it, please take it, please take it.
- 4:31And the Reds finally fell in. So it's the Mets collapse was
- 4:37historic. The Tigers collapse was the
- 4:39biggest division collapse in history.
- 4:41But they're in. And the other thing that I said,
- 4:44I talked about a few things. The other thing I talked about
- 4:46this morning on that show was I just wonder if the Tigers will
- 4:50breathe a lot easier now that that race is over and they don't
- 4:55have to look at the standings anymore.
- 4:56And it's just, hey, it's 00 for everybody right now.
- 5:00We can start over. We have a clean slate.
- 5:02Everybody thinks we're going to lose because we had that
- 5:04collapse. How you just there's no pressure
- 5:07and sure enough, they go out and they score in the first inning.
- 5:09So and Google has mostly been feeling, but now there's two
- 5:12rushes. In trouble now.
- 5:14Yeah, so I, I just, I actually, I think so many people wanted to
- 5:19pick the Guardians going into the series because of momentum
- 5:22and they're at home. And that makes sense to me.
- 5:24I just, I kind of had a Tigers gut feeling calling out to me.
- 5:29You mentioned the Reds and them getting into the playoffs and
- 5:33more about the Mets collapse than anything.
- 5:35Ken asked me earlier. Do you give him any shot?
- 5:37Is this an and it's baseball, It's a three-game series and
- 5:40because of that there is definitely a shot just because
- 5:43of the nature of the game. However, the hill isn't clear.
- 5:46I'd be hard and even if they force a game three, it sounds
- 5:48like Otani is going to be the guy for the Dodgers in game
- 5:51three. Good luck with that.
- 5:53What is the path if we're talking about short series, a
- 5:56huge upset. What did the Reds have to do to
- 5:59pull this off? Yeah, so the the gut instinct is
- 6:04the Dodgers are just going to steamroll them because they're
- 6:06so much better. They're they're, I believe, 10
- 6:09games better than the regular season.
- 6:10And I think that the gap in the talent is much wider than that.
- 6:13It's closer to 20 because the Dodgers were on cruise control
- 6:17until a couple weeks ago and they won 15 to the last 20.
- 6:19And we're blowing teams out. And I feel like they're ready.
- 6:23They're ready to make that deep run.
- 6:25And again, the Reds, they're more mediocre than a playoff
- 6:27caliber team. They just were let in by a
- 6:29terrible lapse. But as you said, and it's true,
- 6:35it's only a three-game series. We, we've seen, you know, the
- 6:39White Sox last year when they were the worst team in baseball
- 6:41history, they took two of three from some teams in there.
- 6:44Like that's all you have to do is just take two of three.
- 6:47And they've got Hunter Green on the mound tonight.
- 6:50I I still believe that Dodgers will win because Blake Snell is
- 6:53going to deal as well as I think Hunter Green might.
- 6:57And the Dodgers offense is much better than the Reds.
- 6:59The Reds don't have a very good offense.
- 7:00They don't hit lefties well, but you've got Hunter Green on the
- 7:03mound and you've got that whole everybody's counting us out
- 7:07things. So you have no pressure
- 7:08whatsoever. And if they somehow steal game
- 7:11one, now all of a sudden the Dodgers have to weigh to the
- 7:13world on their shoulders and the Reds can run out Andrew Abbott.
- 7:17And then if they get to game three, they can run out Nicola,
- 7:20assuming his groin is OK after that great outing last time out.
- 7:24So you can piece it together for the Reds.
- 7:26You really can't. I just, I'm not saying it.
- 7:29Yeah, win game one, maybe get an early lead in Game 2, and then
- 7:33yeah, yeah, they start squeezing those bats a little tighter.
- 7:36We'll see where it goes. Yankees, Red Sox tonight.
- 7:39Why can't the Yankees win this series?
- 7:44Well, I you see how it took me a second because I think they will
- 7:48win. I think the offense is just too
- 7:49good, but I think it starts tonight with Garrett Crochet.
- 7:54You can get Stevens strong innings from Garrett Crochet.
- 7:57Garrett Whitlock is arguably the best set up man in baseball.
- 8:00And then holy cow, play the play to end the inning.
- 8:05It's unbelievable. I think he's safe.
- 8:07I think he's safe. Is he OK?
- 8:09I think OK, yeah, they're going to review.
- 8:11OK. It's the 6th inning all over
- 8:13again from that game. A couple of the unbelievable
- 8:17it's happening again. Yeah, so anyway, the Red Sox was
- 8:24the formula is Garrett Crochet dominates for seven innings.
- 8:26Garrett Whitlock as a set up man is great.
- 8:29Aroldis Chapman's having a career year.
- 8:31Yeah, he's safe at home. So it's going to be 1/1 blue key
- 8:35inning for the Guardian. There, But yeah, thank God for
- 8:37replay. Pitching, yeah, the Red Sox,
- 8:39it's pitching. It's hold the Yankees down
- 8:42tonight. And then it's just what we
- 8:43talked about it. You're up 1, nothing.
- 8:45And you know, the Red Sox have kind of played above their heads
- 8:50a little bit this season, but they can keep doing it because
- 8:52they have a decent number of pieces.
- 8:54I just feel like the lineup's a little lacking.
- 8:57They don't have a superstar in the middle of the order.
- 9:00And and let's remember on the Yankees side, in addition to
- 9:04having Aaron Judge, John Carlos standing at 24 bombs less than
- 9:071/2 season. So you're basically talking
- 9:09about 250 Homer guys in there in addition to Grisham with 34
- 9:15bombs. And then Cody Bellinger and Jazz
- 9:16says I'm like there's power up and down this line.
- 9:19Even Austin Wells and Ben Rice at 20 home runs.
- 9:21So I think the Yankees have too much firepower.
- 9:25But with the Red Sox, it starts tonight with Crochet Whitlock
- 9:29the role as Chapman. Who should be the betting
- 9:32favorite in the American League? All these teams have some pretty
- 9:35major warts and it felt like we've been having this
- 9:37conversation since like May that that just there's nobody that
- 9:40you can really put a Big Bear hug around in this team that you
- 9:42absolutely love at this point. Who should be the betting
- 9:45favorite? So I picked the Mariners to go
- 9:48to the World Series before the odds came out.
- 9:50I think the Blue Jays have a really good case.
- 9:52They have the buy. They have the great, great
- 9:54offense. Pitching is a little shaky.
- 9:57I think the best values on the Yankees.
- 9:59Like you, I just talked about the Yankees offense.
- 10:02If they get that bullpen figured out at all, they've got Frieden
- 10:05Rodon atop the rotation. Louis Hill looks OK.
- 10:08Schlittler looks OK. I think the Yankees are best set
- 10:12up for run to the World Series. I'm going to, I'm going to hold
- 10:16out hope that we see Blue Jays, Mariners because I I would like
- 10:19to see some new blood and Mariners have never made the
- 10:23World Series. Blue Jays haven't been to the
- 10:25World Series since 1993. This is their most wins since
- 10:281993 this season. So I think it would be fun.
- 10:33But just speaking objectively, I feel like the Yankees are the
- 10:37best set up. Of the teams that have a buy
- 10:40American League, National League, who's the one that goes
- 10:43by the wayside? First Brewers.
- 10:46Brewers. I I just interesting.
- 10:48I I talking about our gambling show this morning.
- 10:51I took the Cubs to get to the NLCS and then a few people
- 10:53argued with me in the chat like, I think Padre is going to win.
- 10:56I was like, fine, then take the Padre.
- 10:57I'm mostly fading the Brewers here because since they were
- 11:02winning and playing way over their heads about six weeks ago,
- 11:05once that winning streak stopped, they were 19 and 21.
- 11:09That's a relatively small scample sample of man.
- 11:12That's 40 games of mediocrity and being below 500.
- 11:16And Jose Quintana's hurt, Brandon Woodruff's hurt, Jacob
- 11:20Mesorowski has completely fallen apart.
- 11:24You just can't be sure about the rotation behind Freddy Peralta
- 11:26there. And they don't slug.
- 11:28And I feel like in the postseason you need to slug
- 11:31because pitching is better, defense is better.
- 11:34You're not going to be able to string together hit after hit
- 11:36after hit. You need to be able to hit the
- 11:37ball of the ballpark and they just don't have the power that
- 11:41teams like the Cubs and Dodgers and Phillies do on the National
- 11:44League side. So I I've got the Brewers bowing
- 11:47out early. Let's jump to the biggest
- 11:50conversation, most important one in our market and certainly for
- 11:53you, Matt, as a Cubs fan. Let's talk about these Cubs.
- 11:55Is this set against the Padres? Felt like for a long time this
- 11:59was a series we're going to get though there was that.
- 12:01Oh no, is this thing going to have to move to San Diego?
- 12:04Alas, the Cubs able to get it done and and help them off to
- 12:08get that four spot and home field in the opening round.
- 12:11Horton done at least for the series with the coughing rib
- 12:15injury, which is just so baseball the way that that
- 12:18played out. Where do you feel right now as a
- 12:20Cubs fan and as somebody that tries to look at it objectively?
- 12:23Where do you sit as the Cubs get into it saying that you picked
- 12:26him to get to the NLCSI? Have concerns about Boyd.
- 12:30Obviously he hasn't been nearly as good since the start of
- 12:33August. You worry about he hit the wall.
- 12:34I have concerns about if Ipanaga starts and the winds blowing out
- 12:38because he gives up so many fly balls.
- 12:40But I do think the Cubs are the better team and I think there's
- 12:44a decent gap there. Like as big of a gap as you can
- 12:46have in a playoff there is between two teams that are close
- 12:49and wins there. There's a decent gap there.
- 12:52I don't really trust the Padres rotation and and their offense
- 12:55is just not powerful. They were 28th and home runs
- 12:57this year. They do have an amazing bullpen,
- 13:00so I'm worried about railing heading into the 6th inning and
- 13:05then the bullpen just completely closing the door.
- 13:07I am worried about that. But there were things late in
- 13:11the season that encouraged me for the Cubs.
- 13:13Michael Bush was really, really hot at the top of the order
- 13:16there. left-hander against Padres, riding Nick Pavetta
- 13:19here. Kyle Tucker back from injury,
- 13:21got a couple knocks. That's good.
- 13:23He's a lefty as well. Pete Armstrong feels like he got
- 13:27his mojo back a little bit and that in that last week at the
- 13:30plate. And Fayette Suzuki hit five home
- 13:32runs in the last four after two, the entire second-half before
- 13:36that, he again, I think he's internally an emotional guy and
- 13:40he was beating himself up about how bad he's been playing.
- 13:43But now he can breathe easier and he feels like he's back.
- 13:46I think that's going to between those guys and then how deep the
- 13:50lineup can be with guys like by Esteros, Dansby Swanson, Nico
- 13:54Horner, the Super glue of this team.
- 13:58I think that the the offense is just so deep and so good that
- 14:01they're going to be good enough to to have a run to the NLCF.
- 14:05I think the MVP of that team, Nicole Horner, had a phenomenal,
- 14:08phenomenal year. Let me get your take on on
- 14:10Saturday. Marmal intentionally walking
- 14:13Michael Bush. So there was a runner on 3rd.
- 14:15It's the 8th inning, Cubs are up for he'd he'd hit a couple of
- 14:20homers. He's he's got his triple, he's
- 14:22got his double. He just needed a single for the
- 14:24cycle. The Cubs did not yet clinched
- 14:26the four seed. They would been won by winning
- 14:29that game. Your thoughts?
- 14:31Was it a Bush league move by if it would have been any other
- 14:34team other than the Cardinals, what would they have done?
- 14:38I can see both sides of it like I can see, you know, you're not
- 14:42playing for anything right now, you know, just be a competitor,
- 14:46go out and try to get them out. But I can also see the side of
- 14:50why should we let our rivals party against us all weekend and
- 14:54and continue to give them chances to celebrate.
- 14:57So I I can see both sides of the specs, pettiness and sports.
- 15:01I wouldn't want my rivals to be able to have extra fun.
- 15:04So that's kind of what sports are all about, right?
- 15:07So, yeah, like, why would you want to give your rival an extra
- 15:10chance to to be extra excited when they've been celebrating
- 15:12all weekend with blow out wins? Like, yeah, I I can see the
- 15:16pettiness to it. Turner's on the playoff roster,
- 15:19Ken. I'm sure you saw that this
- 15:20morning. You had a big jump.
- 15:22Oh yeah, that's the. Expensive Who?
- 15:25Well, and that's Katara. That's the.
- 15:27Question, he's on there. Who would you put in place?
- 15:31And I know Ken's got a problem with it.
- 15:33Matt Snyder, do you have a problem with Justin Turner being
- 15:35part of the 26 man roster? I I know what council, it seems
- 15:42like council never wants Michael Bush to face lefty.
- 15:46So he he he wants to keep the powder dry.
- 15:49If there's a big at bat against the left-hander late in the game
- 15:52to be able to pin to attention with Justin Turner, to have the
- 15:55right lefty advantage there. That's the purpose of it.
- 15:59I don't know if I totally agree. I I would rather just at this
- 16:04point let Bush face left. He hit a home run against the
- 16:07lefty over the weekend for Pete's sake, but that's what
- 16:11he's there for. It's also because they don't
- 16:13want Biasteros to see lefties, so if he's in the DH spot they
- 16:17might pinch it. Turner there, but I don't love
- 16:20it. I don't feel like he's very
- 16:21productive, and I know that he's a great clubhouse guy and we've
- 16:24seen him all year talking to Matt Shaw on the bench, for
- 16:27example. And one time Shaw was upset when
- 16:29he got taken out and turned her head.
- 16:30His arm around him was talking him down.
- 16:32He doesn't have to be on the active roster to be able to do
- 16:35that. He could still be in the dugout.
- 16:38So yeah, I don't love it. Hopefully he's just there in
- 16:43case he has like really good numbers against a certain lefty
- 16:46or something like that. But yeah, I'm with you.
- 16:49Who starts game three if there is one for the Cubs?
- 16:52It's Tyone. It's got to be right.
- 16:54I don't think there's any question about that.
- 16:56I don't. Think there's any other option?
- 16:58I was actually wondering about even if they could have lined it
- 17:02up differently in the last couple weeks, which they didn't
- 17:04have the option because they had to fight for that home field.
- 17:07But I was like, man, I would almost trust Tyone more than
- 17:10Boyd and Ibanaga game one at this point because I'm worried
- 17:13about Imanaga's fly balls and Boyd was shaky down the strip.
- 17:16But there are some analytics that, and This is why the Cubs
- 17:21focused on getting Boyd in the offseason as cheaply as they
- 17:24did. There's some analytics that say
- 17:26that that Wrigley Field is the most pitcher friendly ballpark
- 17:30for left-handed pitchers in baseball other than Seattle,
- 17:32which is the most pitcher friendly for everybody.
- 17:35So and then the Padres do hit worse against lefties and
- 17:38righties. So I think that's what the Cubs
- 17:39are saying is between the ballpark and the Padres.
- 17:43Let's run 2 lefties out in the first two games.
- 17:46Ten players traded. Ownership doesn't change.
- 17:50Here we go. No boy blame.
- 17:52The manager, Rocco here's. Your favor.
- 17:54You did him a favor. Absolutely.
- 17:56Get out of there. Get out of that just decrepit,
- 17:58awful organization. I don't feel bad for him because
- 18:02I think it's going to be better for him in the long run.
- 18:05It's certainly disappointing. I like Rocco.
- 18:08I I liked him as a manager. It had nothing to do with him.
- 18:11I don't believe certainly this season, but somebody I guess had
- 18:15to take the fall and and it's going to go to Rocco Baldelli.
- 18:17But that organization, it is not looking good, certainly for the
- 18:21future and even in the interim for the next four or five years.
- 18:24Yeah, I'm sorry, man. I I kind of feel like this is
- 18:29going to Well, first of all, this goes back to when they
- 18:32finally won a playoff theory in advance.
- 18:35And then right away in the offseason, what do we hear?
- 18:37Ownership wants the Cup team. And then now we're worried about
- 18:41instead of capitalizing on advancing in the playoffs and
- 18:43building around a really good core, the word from ownership
- 18:47was cut, cut salary. And it's gone downhill from
- 18:50then. And you get to where we are
- 18:52right now and it looks like it's going to be a tear down, a
- 18:56continue continuation of the tear down that started in July,
- 19:01which means trying to shed Pablo Lopez's salary.
- 19:04And if you're going to do that, why wouldn't you move Joe Ryan
- 19:07and see what prospects can get back?
- 19:08And if you're going to do that, why wouldn't you move Bailey
- 19:10over? And if you're going to do that,
- 19:12would Byron Buxton finally say, you know what?
- 19:16I will let you trade me now, even though I've said I'd never
- 19:19want to leave here. So I my expectation is that they
- 19:24will will be the worst team in the American League next year.
- 19:27I don't know if they can be worse than the Rockies for the
- 19:30worst record in baseball, but it's possible.
- 19:32So again, sorry man. Thanks.
- 19:34You're looking up for the White Sox in that division.
- 19:36There you go, not not going to finish the last next season
- 19:38because the twins will have that finished up.
- 19:40Final thing, I had my notes for you, Matt, in our final minute
- 19:43or so with the teams that get the bye.
- 19:45It's the five games off and we know when we get to the weekend,
- 19:48this is going to be certainly a big topic once we get through
- 19:50these World Series rounds. I know you've looked at it.
- 19:53I know we've talked about it in the past.
- 19:55Just to remind me and remind our listeners as well, is it as
- 19:58impactful? Is it a big deal?
- 20:00Or do they have this set up at least as close to right as they
- 20:03can do it? I think it's perfectly fine.
- 20:06The break is the same number of days as the All Star break.
- 20:09And, and I know that some people would say, well, some teams get
- 20:12to keep playing and the others don't.
- 20:14Well, when you get to take days off, let's just say, for
- 20:16example, we just talked about the Cubs with Kate Horton being
- 20:19hurt, well, you know, you have that break and you might not
- 20:22have to get through a series and then all of a sudden, maybe
- 20:24Horton's ready to go. Blue Jays, same thing.
- 20:26It looks like Beau Bichette might be OK for the ALDS.
- 20:29They don't have to worry about losing in the wild card round
- 20:31without him. And I know that much was made of
- 20:35it. From it came a lot from Braves,
- 20:38Braves fans, Braves media. I think even some of the players
- 20:41insinuated that the day that those days off hurt them before
- 20:44they got beat by the Phillies two years in a row.
- 20:47But I think way too much was made of that because in the same
- 20:51like 2022, the Astros went seven and O on the AL side of the
- 20:55playoffs. After their buy, they were fine.
- 20:58So I, I just, I think too much is being made of it.
- 21:01And, and that that's why last year I was relieved to see 2 by
- 21:05teams get to the World Series. And hopefully that would shut
- 21:08down some of that talk. Because if we kept having wild
- 21:11card teams get to the World Series, the talk would have
- 21:13built up more and more and more to the point where my concern
- 21:16would be, are we going to do 8 seeds in both leagues now just
- 21:19so nobody has buys? Because look at this year with
- 21:22the Reds getting in the playoffs, if we go up to 8,
- 21:25we're going to end up with teams with losing records in the
- 21:28playoffs at some point. And I mean, this year we're
- 21:32talking about the Mets getting in and then I believe the Giant,
- 21:35the 81 and 81, the Giants, a playoff team and you're going to
- 21:38put them in a three-game series against the one seed.
- 21:41That ain't right. So that was my biggest concern.
- 21:44And I'm glad, like I said that last year, we kind of Dave that
- 21:47off with it being Dodgers, Yankees.
- 21:49Get back to the game, Matt Snyder.
- 21:50Thanks for doing this, as always, brother.
- 21:52Appreciate. We'll grab you next Tuesday.
- 21:54Thank you, Matt. All right, take care.
- 21:56Yeah, good to talk to you. Matt Snyder, as we check him on
- 21:58MLB 11, bottom of five, nobody on.
- 22:02There is one out as we continue on here.
- 22:05Bill Benner will join Trent tonight.
- 22:06Next we will get into college football.

- 22:56at 12:40. Bill Bender joins us right now.
- 22:58Talk about college football, Bill, Trenton, Ken.
- 23:00Remarkable weekend has come and gone.
- 23:04I guess we'll start with, you know, I get maybe the biggest
- 23:07story was again, the failure of Penn State to knock off a top 10
- 23:10opponent. James Franklin seems to carry
- 23:12that bugaboo around with him and it happened again.
- 23:16They clawed their way back into it to tight and sent it overtime
- 23:19but ultimately couldn't get it done.
- 23:21Your thoughts on what ails Penn State when it comes to these
- 23:23markets? Key games.
- 23:25Well, the problem with it is I can't, you can't, I can't
- 23:29pinpoint something he did wrong in the game playing about
- 23:34punting from the 39 yard line close game and it was 4th and
- 23:409:00. But I was thinking, OK, if they
- 23:41throw it there and incompletion, we're all going to say, well,
- 23:44James Franklin should have played field position there.
- 23:46So it's really wearing on them. I I know you guys know about
- 23:50stadium moods and it just feels like you can feel even in an
- 23:56environment that often you can feel the frustration permeating
- 23:59throughout the place. A question that I have is it was
- 24:03all set up for this year and if it doesn't happen, if they're
- 24:06good, they make the playoff, they win a game, but there's not
- 24:09a national championship game even appearance if or a path
- 24:13where you beat a Boise, maybe this year it's a beat a Memphis
- 24:16and then that's it. Would James Franklin look of
- 24:19pulling the ripcord of looking for one of the SEC jobs that are
- 24:23open going back to where he began his career with
- 24:25Vanderbilt? It is is that a possibility
- 24:28because it's all set up for this year.
- 24:30They're always going to be there, but the Big 10 is always
- 24:32going to be and knowing just how the fan base is that the
- 24:36possibility get out before the posse comes after you.
- 24:38Could you see Franklin looking into that if the season goes
- 24:41that way? This has been rumored before, so
- 24:47I'm not sure what the good answer is.
- 24:49I mean, he could so he could do at Florida what he's doing at
- 24:52Penn State, but they would get mad if he lost all the top ten
- 24:55names too. It's true.
- 24:56You know what I mean? Up to like that's one that
- 24:58sticks out. I don't, you know, like of the
- 25:00available job. Like I don't see James Franklin
- 25:02going to UCLA. I don't see him going to
- 25:06Arkansas anywhere like that. But you do bring up an
- 25:09interesting point. Some coaches, this becomes a
- 25:12thing and then, yeah, that if the parachute's there, why not
- 25:16take it? But I just for Penn State, I
- 25:19must. I won't say I feel bad, but I
- 25:21feel like I, I empathize with the situation because I did
- 25:26actually think when they tied it up Saturday that, hey, they're
- 25:29going to breakthrough and win this one.
- 25:30Yeah. Bill, who's the best team in the
- 25:32SEC? I'm trying to figure that out
- 25:36now. I've got a spreadsheet and I'm
- 25:37kind of trying to project right now.
- 25:41Probably old men. Uh huh.
- 25:44Like with Trinidad, Chambliss and Lane, Tiffin has it going
- 25:47into the season. I think it's going to be Alabama
- 25:52looking at these schedules. I've got five teams left.
- 25:54You caught him doing a spreadsheet of try.
- 25:56Like if the chalk holds up, they're going to have a car pile
- 25:59up with 10 win teams and nine win teams.
- 26:01And it's going to be, even if you thought last year was bad,
- 26:04this one could potentially be much more messy, you know,
- 26:08especially with, like, Vanderbilt.
- 26:10And, you know, there's some weird tea games in there.
- 26:12So my answer is Ole Miss right now, Alabama at the end.
- 26:18And I'm not giving up on Texas because I still love their
- 26:21defense. You have Oklahoma, who's going
- 26:23to be without Metir, likely going to not be there for the
- 26:25Red River Shootout, maybe back for the South Carolina game.
- 26:29But when you talk about those teams and potentially when we're
- 26:31looking, those last teams in, say, Oklahoma goes 9:00 and 3:00
- 26:35and they lose, say, two games or a game when he's getting back
- 26:38out there. And yet they kind of catch fire
- 26:40again late in the season. They get a win either at
- 26:42Tennessee or Alabama, yet they finished nine and three.
- 26:46I mean, their argument is going to be incredibly strong because
- 26:49of that injury. I mean, you're just adding layer
- 26:51after layer after layer. What have you heard though?
- 26:53What is the latest of material? Is it that South Carolina game
- 26:55they're still targeting? Yeah, I mean, it's going to be
- 26:57close. I mean, that obviously should be
- 26:59OK against Kent State and not sure who made the Kent State
- 27:03schedule, but when you put Texas Tech, Florida State and at least
- 27:08their players will have good tape honestly if they're getting
- 27:11looked at for the next level. But I, I, I still think it's
- 27:16going to just looking at the state of these conferences, I
- 27:20think ten wins is still going to be buying to get in.
- 27:23I do because I, especially in the Big 10 in the SEC, go ahead.
- 27:27I was going to say Notre Dame. What did they do?
- 27:29I mean, obviously they pummelled Arkansas.
- 27:31I can't tell you how much I'm impressed by car.
- 27:34I really and truly am. I like this kid a lot.
- 27:37He showed out. The stage was not too big for
- 27:40him. And on opening week, when they
- 27:43lost to Miami, I think Notre Dame is very much alive.
- 27:46And there were a lot of folks out there, Bill, that thought
- 27:48that this past weekend was going to eliminate Notre Dame from any
- 27:52playoff conversation. I look at the rest of their
- 27:54schedule, maybe USC, but that would be about it.
- 28:00They're going back to the playoff, aren't they?
- 28:03And This is why ten wins is the buy in because I think they are
- 28:06going to get to 10 wins. I think I don't think they're
- 28:09going to lose. I think they're the 28 point
- 28:11second quarter was eye opening. You have a quarterback who's
- 28:15maturing very quickly and an awesome running game.
- 28:18Defense is better. Yeah.
- 28:21So there you go. So let's I'm saying like if
- 28:23you're a nine win SEC or nine win Big 10 team, Now Notre Dame,
- 28:31follow me on this real quick. I think they want Miami to just
- 28:34go win the ACC, dominate the ACC and go win it because then that
- 28:38win, that loss doesn't look bad. And I think they kind of need
- 28:41Texas A&M to get out of the way though, like they need Texas A&M
- 28:44to lose a few. And so that at the end it was 10
- 28:48and two Texas A&M and 10 and 2 Notre Dame.
- 28:50You know what the committee is going to do there.
- 28:53Speaking of Notre Dame, you know Boise looked dreadful on that
- 28:56opening Thursday. Everybody was watching because
- 28:58it was that late afternoon kickoff and everybody jumped
- 29:01aboard there. They just looked awful though.
- 29:04Since then, they put up 5149 and 47 points.
- 29:07They are playing much better and the Notre Dame defense sucks.
- 29:10How could we see a crazy shoot out here and all of a sudden now
- 29:14it's the middle of the fourth quarter and it's 4138 and
- 29:17Boise's right there. Do they have enough to be able
- 29:19to do something crazy like that just because of all the warts
- 29:22that we see in that Notre Dame defense?
- 29:24Yeah, I think Boise State will hang around.
- 29:26I do. I think they've got a team that
- 29:27can absolutely hang around in this game.
- 29:29And As for against the spread, it's been a rough September for
- 29:33me. I mean, but.
- 29:35I think the peak of it, and I'm glad I'm talking to you too, the
- 29:38peak of it was watching Fernando Mendoza run into that end zone.
- 29:43And I just said, you know what, guys?
- 29:45I'm done getting mad about it. I'm done freaking out.
- 29:48I'm done. Because if they're going to do
- 29:50that and go from there. But my point, but to your point,
- 29:54Trent, yes, I think Boise State's going to hang around in
- 29:57that game, make it a fun one. And you know, I don't know what
- 30:01the spread dropped to. It was 17 1/2.
- 30:04It's up to 20 1/2. Jesus, yeah.
- 30:08Yeah, I'll take a Boise there. Yeah, last thing for me, Bill,
- 30:11the audience likes to hear you opine on the two locals you
- 30:14mentioned Mendoza and running into the end zone, but that was,
- 30:16I mean Kennick Stadium almost did it again.
- 30:19That was my take away that the the fan base was in full throat
- 30:22and Kennick being Kennick, such a great place, a tough place to
- 30:25play. And then Iowa State took care of
- 30:27an Arizona team that their arrow seemingly was pointed up there
- 30:30unbeaten. They don't have Texas Tech on
- 30:32the schedule. Or maybe you can look at a
- 30:34different way. Texas Tech doesn't have Iowa
- 30:36State on the schedule. Your your thoughts on the clones
- 30:39and the Hawkeyes. Well, the Hawks said.
- 30:43I thought they were going to pull that game out at the annual
- 30:46Be the Top Ten team and you know, I think they showed a lot
- 30:49in that game now, but you got to give credit to Fernando Mendoza
- 30:53making that throw at the right time.
- 30:55Now, Iowa State this weekend right in my backyard.
- 31:00Cincinnati Thorsby is pretty good.
- 31:04He played well. So this is a tricky 1 and I
- 31:08still picked Iowa State to win. But just beware of this
- 31:11Cincinnati team because Thorsby, you saw him against Nebraska,
- 31:15Got a little, got a little. I, I, I was on a show earlier
- 31:20this week, Tim Brew in Cincinnati compared him to Baker
- 31:23Mayfield, A little bit of that in his game.
- 31:26You'll see it. Hi, Kansas health game, Yes,
- 31:29Yeah. It's it's going to be outside.
- 31:31Hey, I wanted to ask you about the Heisman Trophy.
- 31:34Mitchell Mendoza. He's up there towards the top
- 31:36betting choice. Dante Moore now is the favorite
- 31:39plus 750 for him. And then Ty Simpson is the
- 31:42second choice, which he was great.
- 31:44Certainly in the first half against Georgia, they held on
- 31:47and got the victory there. Still, as we get ready tomorrow
- 31:50to flip the calendar to October, this thing, boy, it still feels
- 31:53wide open. And you got Carson Beck up
- 31:55there, of course, Jeremiah Smith, on and on and on.
- 31:58Your sixth choice is a guy that didn't even start playing until
- 32:00Game 3. And Chambliss, who we talked
- 32:01about earlier, it feels like a really open race in the Heisman.
- 32:05Do you see it the same way? Yep, and it's going to keep
- 32:09changing. Now, I still think I still think
- 32:12Jeremiah Smith is the guy to watch because Smith is the guy
- 32:17that he's going to have big numbers every week.
- 32:19If he keeps scoring like a touchdown every week as big
- 32:21games against Penn State and Michigan, he'll be that guy
- 32:24because these quarterbacks have just come and gone.
- 32:27Dante Moore did make a really good statement at Penn State,
- 32:32especially in the overtime session.
- 32:34They have back-to-back touchdowns and we just cool in
- 32:37that environment. It was cool to see so and
- 32:40Mendoza's right there, too. So there are plenty of Big 10
- 32:42guys in the mix. Can be fascinating race Bill.
- 32:45As always, thank you, buddy. We'll talk to you next week.
- 32:47Thank you, Bill Bender. Hey, enjoy the playoff baseball,
- 32:50enjoy the weekend. I'll talk to you guys next.
- 32:52Week. Oh, yeah, I thank you.
- 32:53Bill Bender from the Sporting News.
- 32:55Yeah, I was kind of surprised he wasn't in Cleveland for this one
- 32:57that Sporting News didn't. I'm jumping the car and head to
- 33:00the ballpark. He said his wife is a Guardians
- 33:03fan. Yeah, I knew that.
- 33:03He's a Padres fan. He's.
- 33:05A Padres fan? Yeah.
- 33:07How the hell did he be Tony Quinn?
- 33:08Yes, Bill, the same age as me. Same thing in my affinity for
- 33:11the Padres and because of Tony Quinn.
- 33:14But he said where he is right now.
- 33:15Tons of Reds fans, ton of Guardian fans and of course, ton
- 33:18of Cubs fans still up there as well.
- 33:20So he said. It's been a fun week of talking
- 33:22baseball to a lot of people, yeah.
- 33:24It is. It's a great time of year, no
- 33:25doubt about it. All right, we'll take time out,
- 33:27come back. Trent's plays of the day,
- 33:28They're coming up next, three baseball games to a pine on.
- 33:32We'll get his thoughts on that. What else is there tonight?
- 33:35Is there any? Is there WNBA?
- 33:38The WNBA goes tonight, it will be the decider with a fever and
- 33:43the Aces 8 1/2 the number. In Vegas.
- 33:47In Vegas. Well, is that on your card?
- 33:51Looking at it right now. Miller and Condon back with
- 33:55Trent's plays of the day circus sports sponsors, it's the Iowa
- 33:58Sports Radio Network. Hi Miller and Condon welcome
- 34:03back final couple of minutes here on a Tuesday off the bench
- 34:06coming up top of the hour, Sean Roberts, Lucas strain take you
- 34:09until 5 still tied up 1 apiece in game one of the Cleveland
- 34:13Detroit series. They're playing in the 7th
- 34:15inning, but the Tigers have runners on 1st and 3rd.
- 34:19There's nobody out. Williams has just been chased
- 34:22from the game. Scubal still schooling as far as
- 34:25we know for the Tigers. At least he wasn't that last
- 34:27inning, so we'll see if the Tigers can push one around.
- 34:29Nobody out. Runners on 1st and 3rd as we sit
- 34:32through a pitching change. I told you a very added big part
- 34:35of the oddity of the schedule. Gavin Williams, This is his
- 34:38third straight start against the Tigers.
- 34:41Two to end the regular season, 1 here in the playoffs.
- 34:43And he pitched really well today.
- 34:44And he's been very well today, outstanding against the Tigers
- 34:47in the two previous, had 12 strikeouts in one of those
- 34:49games, not in the other. Didn't give it up or run in that
- 34:52one. But a little bit of trouble here
- 34:55as we play in the 7th. All right now, Fisher Caller,
- 34:58the very gifted player for the Minnesota Lynx who got injured.
- 35:02Sadly, your season probably come to an end, right?
- 35:03She is out for the year. This is what she just said
- 35:06recently within the last hour at a press conference.
- 35:09We have the best players in the world.
- 35:11We have the best fans in the world, but right now we have the
- 35:13worst leadership in the world. Well done.
- 35:16Apparently, Kathy Englehart, the commissioner, said this to
- 35:21Nafisha. I don't know if it was privately
- 35:23or not. Caitlin should be grateful she's
- 35:25making 60 million off the court because without the platform of
- 35:28the West, she wouldn't be making anything.
- 35:31What? What is she doing?
- 35:34All of her detractors? I mean, if this just doesn't sum
- 35:37it up, my good God. Anyways, I haven't watched
- 35:42anything since she hasn't played.
- 35:43So there you go. Yeah, I just can't do it.
- 35:45I'm a Caitlin Clark fan. It's.
- 35:46A rarity for me. I might TuneIn tonight, but I
- 35:50think this is going to be a blog.
- 35:51You do. It's been a great story by the
- 35:53fever getting to. This point so banged up there,
- 35:55so many players out. And to get to the semifinals of
- 35:58credit, to get to a game five against this Aces team.
- 36:01But Vegas is so good at home. They were 17 to 5 in the regular
- 36:04season. Their Rd. home splits are pretty
- 36:06significant. Where are they playing and are
- 36:07they at the Mandalay Bay, their home cordure?
- 36:09They didn't. They didn't take it to T-Mobile.
- 36:11Now if Caitlin was playing, it would be a T-Mobile, right?
- 36:14Assuming there's nothing going. On This is in Paradise, so it's
- 36:17in the Michelob Ultra arena there.
- 36:19Yeah, well, I'm going to lay the 8.
- 36:22You're laying the 8. Laying the 8:00 with the Aces.
- 36:25What else you doing? I got one other game and then
- 36:27three plot props. I'm playing, as you know, I like
- 36:30these. When we get to the playoffs,
- 36:32this is when I start to get into baseball.
- 36:33Props, a whole lot more digging in.
- 36:35So I'm going to play the Cubs today -122 We talked about that
- 36:38earlier. Though Boyd's had his issues.
- 36:40I'm not a believer in Pavetta. His splits have been awful in
- 36:42Wrigley Field. I'll lay the -122 at Circa as
- 36:46opposed to the -140 that is there at other places.
- 36:50Yeah -1 and 22 for the Cubs for me.
- 36:53And then three props, all right, two pitching ones.
- 36:56I'm going Freed over 5 1/2 strikeouts.
- 36:58Got to lay some juice there -135 But I'm going to do that with
- 37:02Freed in the matchup tonight against the Red Sox.
- 37:04Just looking forward to the theater of that too.
- 37:06Well, how about the pitching matchup?
- 37:08Red Sox. Yankees.
- 37:09How about that squeeze bunt? Yeah, I think it was probably a
- 37:13suicide squid. He was off.
- 37:15To. Safety squeeze might have been,
- 37:17might have been but went the other way and I think the guy on
- 37:203rd whoever it was. It was Mckinstry who's fast.
- 37:23Yeah, well, 2121 DEET now with a runner on second base, two out.
- 37:29And yeah, still threatening with a runner in scoring position.
- 37:32No safety squeeze. Now look, you're right, Trent.
- 37:34Yep. 5 1/2 / 4 Freed. I'm going under an outs recorded
- 37:39for hunter green. I like Hunter Green a lot.
- 37:42This moment coming off the injury, though, as good as he
- 37:45has been, and then going up against that line up where they
- 37:48just grind the crap out of you. Under 16 outs recorded for
- 37:53Hunter green -144 in that one. And then my final one is a
- 37:57little bit goofy, just throwing like 1/2 unit on it.
- 38:00I've taken Judge to Homer. We know about his issues come
- 38:03playoff time. He's not the same guy.
- 38:05Statistically, he hasn't been the same, but it's always about
- 38:08October. Look at the calendar.
- 38:09It's the 30th of September, so let's come talk to me tomorrow.
- 38:13Right. Plus 230 Judge homers and we'll
- 38:17throw a half year about that to have a little.
- 38:18Bit of fun. That's all this is we're having.
- 38:20Fun. Hell yeah.
- 38:21We're going to have fun tomorrow.
- 38:22I like Mike Palm Super Tuesday. It is a big day.
- 38:25All this big. We'll get a Super Wednesday.
- 38:27We will. We will come right back at it
- 38:29tomorrow. Same game times.
- 38:30Nothing changes as far as the lineup of these games gets
- 38:34underway in Cleveland, goes to Chicago, to New York and curtain
- 38:38comes down. And which of the three of the
- 38:40four series, I guess I should include the Dodgers and the
- 38:43Reds? Which of these four series get
- 38:46to a game three? Because it doesn't happen a ton.
- 38:49Tigers guardians will. OK, that's it.
- 38:53That's it. That's it.
- 38:55No socks. Yanks.
- 38:56Nope. Yanks cruise.
- 38:58Cubs cruise. We shall see.
- 39:03I appreciate you being with us here today off the benches.
- 39:07Coming up next, Trent and I are back every Monday through
- 39:10Friday. We're with you from noon to two
- 39:12on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 or statewide.
- 39:15We're glad we are on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:18We'll talk to you tomorrow.
