- 0:00Speaker 1: Here to discuss all of the baseball with us. As always,
- 0:03our good friend, our MLB insider from the Chicago White
- 0:07Sox front office, Geen Watson, is with us now. Gino
- 0:10spent time again at Notre Dame of Luis. What you
- 0:12got to meet Joe Fisman was that the deal.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I've been around some people in my lifetime that carried presents,
- 0:21but this man, my gosh, what an incredible human being.
- 0:25And he made time for a lot of us that
- 0:28were at the New Rodney Society Foundation Awards. He was
- 0:31given the Living Legend Award on Friday night, and it
- 0:34was just a wonderful night and a great experience.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I take it you didn't remind him of like that
- 0:40Monday night football game to start off the eighty five
- 0:42season when the Cowboys beat Washing in forty four to fourteen,
- 0:45and everybody sang Happy Birthday to him on his birthday
- 0:48that night.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You know, he he brought up a lot of the
- 0:53Monday Night stuff, including his injury, and did not I
- 0:56noticed when they showed his highlights and they showed the play,
- 1:00he did not look at the screen. It's kind of weird,
- 1:02but ma'am, what a superhuman being. He is no doubt
- 1:05about it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Let's talk about baseball for the second consecutive weekend. I
- 1:10want I want to point this out. This is all
- 1:13in the interest of the importance of things. For the
- 1:16second straight week, Gene Watson has correctly picked three of
- 1:21the four series the outcomes that he did it in
- 1:24the wildcard picked three out of the four, and he
- 1:27did so again in the Division series. He picked three
- 1:29of the four Division Series winner. Now it does bear
- 1:32noting that the one that he missed on is a
- 1:34big one, because that's the team he picked up win
- 1:36the whole thing, the San Diego Padres. But you did
- 1:39pick the Cleveland Guardians to win. You did pick the
- 1:41New York Yankees to win, and they start tonight, and
- 1:45you picked the Mets to beat the Phillies, and not
- 1:46a lot of people had fate that that would happen.
- 1:49So you've got the Dodgers and the Mets, and then
- 1:53you've got the Yankees and the Guardians. We might as
- 1:55we wouldn't start with the nationally because they already won
- 1:57game under book under their belt, where Jack claird pitch
- 2:00really well for the Dodgers. Last night, they tied that
- 2:03major League record for consecutive scoreless postseason innings at thirty three.
- 2:07But they'll stay tied with that because they'll lead off
- 2:10home run by Lindor for the Mets off of Ryan Brazier,
- 2:13which will be another bullpen game for.
- 2:15Speaker 3: The Dodgers today.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So you have to believe the Mets are feeling a
- 2:18little bit, breathing a little easier now that they've got
- 2:21something on the board here.
- 2:22Speaker 4: It's unbelievable.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And just when you think it's midnight for the Cinderella
- 2:27team after the game last night, they just keep coming.
- 2:31And Francisco Lindor, that is the key to that ball club.
- 2:34Speaker 4: He knows it.
- 2:35Speaker 2: He's responded to being the catalyst of the club and
- 2:39you just can't count him out. And in watching the
- 2:43game last night, that the Dodger game last night, you
- 2:46kind of got a sense that they know they've gotten
- 2:49past the real test in the San Diego Padres. Just
- 2:52the way they carried themselves on the field, the way
- 2:55they ran the bases freely, they're at bats, it just
- 2:58seemed like such a less intense approach to the game.
- 3:03They were playing just more care free. But I'm telling you, man,
- 3:07the Mets just keep coming and Francisco Lindor. For them
- 3:11to have a chance in this series, he's going to
- 3:14have to continue to do what he's.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Done all playoffs.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And here's the other side of that also, you know,
- 3:18I had somebody text me and said, well, if the
- 3:20Mets are going to play like they did last night,
- 3:21they might as well not show up. And I said,
- 3:23you don't understand. First of all, the Mets ran a
- 3:25bullpen game out there last night. They got their two
- 3:28big guns going today in Sean Maniya and then Luis
- 3:32Severino going in Game three, the Dodgers going with a
- 3:35bullpen game today, and then Walker Bueller, who was the
- 3:38last to give up a run until the Dodgers got
- 3:40on that streak. But he's still not completely all the
- 3:44way back to how he was before. So it's a
- 3:46little bit iffy before they can even get to Yamamoto
- 3:50in Game four to pitch for this. So this thing
- 3:52is still very much still up in the air.
- 3:55Speaker 4: No question.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And the real flip of the Padre Dodgers series was
- 4:00when the Padres had Dylan Cease Going, who we traded
- 4:04to them in spring training.
- 4:05Speaker 4: They gave away two of their top pitching prospects.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Four prospects overall, and anytime you have that type of
- 4:12starter going versus a bullpen game, you expect to win
- 4:15the game. But that's what's changed the most about baseball
- 4:18now is there's so much information, there's so much data
- 4:22involved in game planning and prepping that that teams don't.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Even blink anymore.
- 4:27Speaker 2: They say bullpen game and they fully expect to win
- 4:30the game. And Dave Roberts has been very adamant and
- 4:32very unapologetic about the fact that when they have a
- 4:35bullpen game, they expect to win the game. And it's
- 4:39been very unique to the playoffs the last few years.
- 4:42And it's certainly something where you would think, when you
- 4:45get to this point of the season, you have five
- 4:48strong starters, but the fact of the matters, with the
- 4:50injuries that are taking place in the game, it's just
- 4:54not the case, and so you've got to do the
- 4:55very best you can to manage your way through these
- 4:59type of games. Just the confidence in which teams do
- 5:02it now it's really remarkable.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And conversely, offensively for the Dodgers, I think the other
- 5:07thing that got them going and turned back around was
- 5:09not with all of the focus and all the attention
- 5:11on Choe Otani and rightly, so, I thought it was
- 5:15getting Mookie Betts going, getting Max Munsey going, getting some
- 5:19of those other guys going in that fault was what
- 5:21helped turn the series against San Diego.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and five hits last night, that was a big
- 5:26part of their success.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And man, Kicky Hernandez, what can you say?
- 5:30Speaker 2: This guy just keeps playing in October and he's kind
- 5:34of been that type of player his entire career, And
- 5:37so I think you're gonna see a situation where the
- 5:40Mets try to work their way around the top three
- 5:44in that order. You know, Freeman's been playing with a
- 5:47softball sized ankle for a while.
- 5:49Speaker 4: It's incredible what he's been able to do.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And just to get on the field and play with
- 5:55his ankle the way it is, Miguel Rojas is a
- 5:57big loss. They've had to kind of find their way
- 6:00at shortstop and move guys around, and so what they've
- 6:04been able to accomplish is truly remarkable. But you can
- 6:06see it that they can smell it now. They know
- 6:09they're close and they're going to be clicking on all
- 6:12cylinders the rest of the series.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Talking baseball with Gene Watson, here are MLW Insider on
- 6:17sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone Gino. Let's shift
- 6:20to the American League now. And the Tigers gave the
- 6:24Guardians all they wanted before Cleveland was able to pull
- 6:27away and got the Big Grand Slam on Saturday, and
- 6:29they were able to then hold on and get the victory.
- 6:32And they take on a Yankee team that were in
- 6:35competitive games all the way with Kansas City but just
- 6:39managed to win three of those four games.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And how do you see this series lining up well?
- 6:45Speaker 4: In closing those other series.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I think you're seeing a pretty good spot at what
- 6:49the American League Central is going to look like for
- 6:51the next couple of years.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Kansas City is certainly not going away.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They've got arguably the best young player in the game
- 6:57of baseball. They've got super talented players all over the field.
- 7:00They did a great job this year of adding to
- 7:03that starting rotation for which they'll have some decisions to
- 7:07make this winner and Detroit in what they were able
- 7:09to accomplish, and I've spoken to aj Ininch almost every
- 7:13day this week and he's so proud. You know, they
- 7:16played with house money really the last three weeks of
- 7:18the season and he's just so proud of the season
- 7:21they had. So these are two teams that are going
- 7:23to be combating the American League Central and into the
- 7:26playoffs the next couple of years. The Yankees, I think
- 7:29this series has got a chance to be a really
- 7:32high scoring series. And for the Yankees, Aaron Judge has
- 7:35got to get going. He's just you know, gille Carl
- 7:38Stanton's done a great job of carrying the weight a
- 7:41little bit so far in the middle of that order,
- 7:43but Judge is going to have to get going for
- 7:45them to be successful. And on the flip side, hose
- 7:48that Ramirez has got to get going. He hasn't had
- 7:50the type of playoffs that you would expect him to have.
- 7:53And Stephen Kwan has been an incredible catalyst at the
- 7:56top of the order. And Lane Thomas with the big
- 7:58Grand Slam the other day against the Tigers. These are
- 8:02two like high energy players that love to play. But
- 8:06to win in this time of year, your your your
- 8:09key guys have to be performing. And for the Yankees
- 8:12that's Aaron Judge and for the Indians that's Jose Ramirez.
- 8:15And I think that whoever steps up and in this
- 8:18series is going to be a big part of who
- 8:20wins the series.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I was going to ask you this the interesting thing here.
- 8:24Speaker 1: First of all, how you felt the pitching matchup, and
- 8:27Garrett Cole was really good last time out. In terms
- 8:30of the pitching. Is the advantage to the Yankees in
- 8:33this series.
- 8:34Speaker 4: I think the starting pitching is. But I think you know,
- 8:38Tanner Bibi is a very qualified starter. Alex Cobbs been
- 8:41great this year.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think their bullpen, if you get to the Indians bullpen,
- 8:46it is game over. The very they were built very
- 8:49much like we were with Herrera and Davis and Holland
- 8:53in fourteen and fifteen. It's a six inning games, six
- 8:58inning game with Cleveland, and so New York's gonna have
- 9:01to do a great job of getting those starting pitchers
- 9:03deep in the games like they have, scoring the runs
- 9:07that they have, especially in their ballpark, getting Aaron Judge going.
- 9:10But any game in which Cleveland has a lead in
- 9:12the fifth or sixth inning, and I'm sure Stephen Vote
- 9:14will be very creative and the way he uses his
- 9:17leverage relievers in leverage parts of the road of the
- 9:21lineup in the sixth and seventh inning, where you may
- 9:24see some unconventional moves earlier in the game when the
- 9:27game is more on the line, and if they can
- 9:29do that, that's the way that Cleveland will stay in
- 9:31this series.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Of these four guys, which team do you feel needs
- 9:37that particular guy to get going that had that hasn't
- 9:42been completely untracked Aaron Judge for the Yankees. You mentioned
- 9:47Ramirez for the for the Guardians, Shoe Ayotani for the Dodgers,
- 9:53or Pete Alonzo for the Mets.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Which which are these four teams do you feel.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Most needs there that big gun to really be going
- 10:00in this series?
- 10:00Speaker 2: In these two series, boy, that's a tough one. But
- 10:04I would say Alonso and Judge have to get going.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Those two.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I don't think there's much separation between what those twos
- 10:12have to do for their lineups, because when they're not going,
- 10:15you can work your way around. There's just there's so
- 10:18much impact when they take a swing. Uh, you know,
- 10:21it's it's a two, three run home run every chance
- 10:24they get. And so those are the two guys that
- 10:26I would say have to really carry the load. Uh
- 10:30if they get into shooting matches where they're scoring a
- 10:32lot of runs, which I see more happening on the
- 10:34American League side than the National League side. But those
- 10:37would be the two guys that I think have to
- 10:39carry their lineups for them to move forward.
- 10:41Speaker 1: All right, So, Gino, as I mentioned at the start
- 10:44of the playoffs, even at the start of the wildci
- 10:46card I said, I'd give you a chance to reset.
- 10:48And so we're resetting again here with the Padres now
- 10:51out of it. What's your choice on these two league
- 10:55Championship series a LCS and n NLCS, and and then
- 11:00wins the World Series, a chance for a reset here? Well, Craig,
- 11:03you'll be happy to know that I'm gonna pick the Dodgers.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I don't know that I'm happy about that. I don't
- 11:07know that they're happy about that. You know, your.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Son, your your son Tyler who works for the San
- 11:15Diego Padres. When he when he texted me when he
- 11:18was going out with the series first start, I said, well,
- 11:20your dad, you guys are hot. Your dad picked it,
- 11:22and he said he His response to he was, I
- 11:25don't think I.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Needed to hear that.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I just think they're the most talented team.
- 11:30Speaker 2: If they can get through this bullpen game, I think
- 11:33that they know they've they've gotten through what could have
- 11:35been their roadblock, and and I, you know, I picked
- 11:39the Cleveland Indians in the beginning to be in the
- 11:41World Series. But but to do it, you know, Jose
- 11:45Ramirez is gonna have to get going. He's gonna they're
- 11:48gonna have to get linked out of their starters, and
- 11:50he's going to have to impact this series.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Otherwise we're gonna have a Dodgers Yankees World Series.
- 11:57Speaker 3: So you're gonna stick with the Guardians, though.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I think I'm going to flip to the Yanks.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Okay, hey, listen, you have waffle privileges. You know you're
- 12:06allowed to pretty good at it. I would ask you
- 12:09this too. I know that probably I've even had friends
- 12:12and kind of roll their eyes at the thought of
- 12:14if the Dodgers and Yankees meet the World Series. Oh,
- 12:16the two evil Empires, blah blah blah blah blah. They
- 12:18have not met in the World Series since nineteen eighty one,
- 12:21the strike here, that's the last time they did, and
- 12:23the Dodgers won that. And if it happens, you know,
- 12:28Fox will be just turning cartwheels because the ratings would
- 12:32just be astronomical, wouldn't they.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I do think it would be great for baseball from
- 12:36a viewer standpoint, From a new viewer standpoint, for sure,
- 12:41what you're talking about is two of the larger payrolls,
- 12:44two of the larger operations when it comes to infrastructure
- 12:48and the way they operate. But I also love the
- 12:51fact that there are also two of the largest scouting
- 12:54organizations that are out there. And we always from a
- 12:57scouting standpoint and a scouting viewpoint, you know, we always
- 13:00need to have the teams that believe in scouting and
- 13:03utilizer scouting. And Andrew Friedman came out today and talked
- 13:06about how important is advanced scouts were in the win
- 13:10and the shutout innings versus the padres, and so anytime
- 13:13you have larger markets with all the resources in the
- 13:16world still giving credit to scouting, I think it's super
- 13:20important for the future of the industry and for that
- 13:23field in the industry, and I think it's great.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I think it'd be great.
- 13:26Speaker 2: For baseball, especially from a new fan standpoint and growing
- 13:30the game. I think it's easy to say it's the
- 13:32two largest markets you pay your way, but history has
- 13:36proven in the last thirty years that the most money
- 13:39doesn't always win you've got to have great culture, great talent.
- 13:42You've got to be playing well in October. And there's
- 13:44a super thin line between winning and losing October. But
- 13:47I think it would be super for the game if
- 13:49that was the matchup.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So we're actually going to get you in town this
- 13:52week for this little old football game here Saturday night.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I'm very excited. I can't wait to get back to Austin. Yeah,
- 13:57it's going to be great. We're looking forward to it.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Ge know, I appreciate at the time, Thanks so much,
- 14:01look forward to seeing you this week.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Okay, guys, thanks so much, appreciate you.
- 14:04Speaker 3: You bet all right.
- 14:05Speaker 1: That is Gene Watson, or MLB Insider. So he's got
- 14:08a Dodger Yankee World Series now happy, Hey, Craig, he
- 14:11picked the Rangers in the Rangers he did run last season,
- 14:14so don't don't feel too bad about that pick. I
- 14:17have a little bit of trepidation because he picked the
- 14:19Padres to win the whole thing. But but, but, but
- 14:22the Dodgers beat the Padres.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that was his favorite, And that tells you how
- 14:26good the Dodgers are.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Well, the Mets still lead one nothing. They've gone to
- 14:30the top of the second inning, Dodgers managed to get
- 14:32one run around two out walk to Teoscar Hernandez. But
- 14:36Sean and I look really good. He struck out show
- 14:39Ao Tani, he struck out Mookie Bets, and then after
- 14:42giving up the walk to Hernandez, he got Freddie Freeman
- 14:46the fly out here in the inning. They've gone to
- 14:47the second inning now and Landon Nack. Remember this is
- 14:51a bullpen game, so the Dodgers could use eight nine
- 14:54arms today. Landon Nack comes out after Ryan Brazier gave
- 14:58up the leadoff home run to Lindore and so Landon
- 15:02Nack has come out, and he promptly gave up a
- 15:04lead off single. So the map's trying to get something
- 15:07going against the second Dodger relief pitcher out there. Landon Nack,
- 15:11the rookie out there for La right now, all right,
- 15:14up next, we're gonna hear more from log Wortons head
- 15:16coach Steve Sarkishan. Turn our attention back on this Loghorns
- 15:19Monday to Texas and Georgia coming up when we continue
- 15:22on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
- 15:24iHeartRadio app
