- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good afternoon, listeners. Thank you for coming on to
- 0:03Speaker 1: Lament of Hope podcast. As you guys know, we always
- 0:06Speaker 1: have so many interesting guests. And by the time this
- 0:09Speaker 1: one comes out, we're nearing our 300th episode, which is
- 0:12Speaker 1: really exciting. But I'm talking today with Jennifer Goff, who
- 0:16Speaker 1: is the founder of Skip the Line. And I came
- 0:21Speaker 1: across this business and I was just so intrigued. I mean.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I was down there for quite a while.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I was probably down there... Well, maybe like four hours.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And then, you know, I would go up to different
- 0:32Speaker 2: groups in line and just tell them what I could do. Hey,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'll wait here. I'll provide text message updates. I will,
- 0:40Speaker 2: you know, keep track of everything and let you know
- 0:43Speaker 2: when it's time to come back as we get closer
- 0:45Speaker 2: to the front.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Wow.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And a lot of people, some people wanted to try it,
- 0:49Speaker 2: but they were reluctant. And then finally, a group of
- 0:52Speaker 2: people were like, hey, yeah, that would be great. We
- 0:54Speaker 2: are starving. We're going to go get something to eat.
- 0:57Speaker 2: We'll see you in like an hour. And then they
- 1:00Speaker 2: came back and it was pretty seamless. They just took
- 1:03Speaker 2: over their spot again and they were ready to go inside.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And did you charge them at that? Did you just
- 1:10Speaker 1: think of a price that would be fair?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I modeled it after what the New York company did.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And what we did is they paid me half up
- 1:20Speaker 2: front and then they paid me half when they came back.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You know, it was a much lower price when I
- 1:25Speaker 2: was getting started. And that I think also made people
- 1:28Speaker 2: feel comfortable. But like I said, I would send them
- 1:31Speaker 2: picture updates just so they could know I was there.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And yeah, it was pretty, you know, they really enjoyed it.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And they have used me again since then.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Do you, like, and, you know, I was going to
- 1:45Speaker 1: ask you because I wondered if you would wait in
- 1:48Speaker 1: line and then it would be, like, time to pay
- 1:50Speaker 1: and the people would be like, sorry, we don't want to.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So it's, you say you would take half, at least
- 1:56Speaker 1: at that time, and then they would pay you the
- 1:57Speaker 1: other half later. Were you, like, there is the temptation
- 2:04Speaker 1: to just leave with half the money. Like, does that...
- 2:09Speaker 1: does that question, did that come up for you when
- 2:11Speaker 1: you were starting? Or people were like, well, what if
- 2:13Speaker 1: we give you half the money now and you're not
- 2:17Speaker 1: here when we come back? Because you at least got
- 2:19Speaker 1: half of it. Yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I mean, especially starting out, people really had to trust
- 2:25Speaker 2: what I was going to do. And I think people
- 2:28Speaker 2: really did. And then as, as the days started going on,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I would have people that hired me leave, um, reviews
- 2:37Speaker 2: on the bars Yelp page. Um, so they could be like, Hey,
- 2:40Speaker 2: call Jennifer. She'll wait in line for you. Um, and
- 2:45Speaker 2: then from there, you know, I finally made like a
- 2:48Speaker 2: website and a Facebook business page and had legitimate reviews and,
- 2:53Speaker 2: of course people trust you more when you have all
- 2:55Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. But yeah, leading up to it,
- 2:57Speaker 2: it was just kind of, you know, people had to be,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, trusting. So I thought that was also interesting.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That is, I mean, did you ever face like any
- 3:10Speaker 1: kind of discouragement as you were building such a novel concept?
- 3:14Speaker 1: I mean, for here in DC and like, I'm guessing
- 3:18Speaker 1: you would have faced a lot of obstacles as well.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Cause anything you starting from, you know, the ground up
- 3:23Speaker 1: is like hard. It's like building your own business. Did you,
- 3:27Speaker 1: did it grow faster than you thought? Or were there
- 3:32Speaker 1: several obstacles you had to face along the way that
- 3:34Speaker 1: it was hard to overcome?
