- 0:50one. There is talk of murder today.
- 0:56We are back in the book of Armenian folk tales written down
- 0:58by AG Cyclomian. Today's story has a silly royal
- 1:03who seeks to blame all women kind for the crimes of one that
- 1:06he himself encouraged. OK, let's begin.
- 1:13Husband or wife which a Goldsmith and his wife lived a
- 1:18happy life in perfect harmony and love in all the land.
- 1:23They were considered the best version of conjugal love.
- 1:27It was their custom not to put out the light in their house,
- 1:30but to let it burn all the night.
- 1:33One night as the king and queen were looking in from their high
- 1:36window at the sleepy city, they noticed the goldsmith's light
- 1:39twinkling in the distance and his well known matrimonial love
- 1:44became the subject of debate between the royal couple.
- 1:48The king insisted that it was on the account of the husband's
- 1:50virtue that he and his wife are in such perfect harmony.
- 1:56The queen insisted that it was on the account of the wife's
- 1:58virtue. There upon they decided to make
- 2:01a test and find out the truth. On the following day the queen
- 2:07sent one of her hands maids to the Goldsmith saying that she
- 2:09had fallen in love with him and would become his wife if he
- 2:12killed his current wife. Not I, answered the Goldsmith.
- 2:17I will not part from my wife for all the world.
- 2:21I am content with what heaven has assigned me.
- 2:24I will not exchange my wife for 1000 Queens.
- 2:28On the following day, the king sent a servant to the
- 2:30goldsmith's wife, saying that he had been charmed with her beauty
- 2:34and wanted to make her queen if she would kill her present
- 2:37husband. Really.
- 2:40Is it really true? Exclaimed the woman.
- 2:43It is true, answered the servant.
- 2:46Well then, said the woman, I will kill my husband this very
- 2:49night. When you see our light has gone
- 2:51out tonight, know that I've begun to murder him.
- 2:56The servant brought word to the king, who ordered his men to be
- 2:58ready and to go to the rescue of the Goldsmith if the light was
- 3:01really put out. In the evening the Goldsmith
- 3:04came home after supper. The husband and wife had a nice
- 3:08talk as usual, and the husband, putting his head on the lap of
- 3:11his wife, fell asleep. The woman slipped A noose around
- 3:16his neck, blew out the candle, and began to pull on the rope.
- 3:21The poor Goldsmith was strangled before the King's men came to
- 3:24the rescue. This murder of one of his
- 3:27favorite subjects grieved the king so deeply that he
- 3:30thereafter hated all women from the depths of his soul.
- 3:34He could not sleep that night, and early in the morning he
- 3:37called his Prime Minister, saying, Today I will go hunting.
- 3:41You must put all the women in the country to death, old and
- 3:43young, before I come home this evening.
- 3:46The Prime Minister had an aged father, to whom he went and
- 3:49repeated the King's terrible order.
- 3:52Do not obey it, said the old man.
- 3:55I shall be responsible. Go and hide yourself for a
- 3:58couple of days from the anger of the king.
- 4:02In the evening the king came back from hunting and seeing the
- 4:04women of the realm still alive, was enraged and called his Prime
- 4:08Minister into his presence. The old man appeared before the
- 4:12king, standing on his crutches. Where is your son?
- 4:16Said the king. I went to first cut off his
- 4:19head, then those of the women. Long live the king, said the old
- 4:25man with his trembling voice. Permit me to tell you of an
- 4:28experience of mine, and then put your command into execution if
- 4:32you choose. Speak, said the king, who at the
- 4:37same time gave orders to the soldiers to be ready to butcher
- 4:39the women. I was Prime Minister during your
- 4:43father's reign, said the old man.
- 4:46One day we went hunting. I was led astray by game and
- 4:50came near a village on the other side of the forest.
- 4:54Soon I was overtaken by an unknown horseman, who took hold
- 4:58of me, lifting me up from the back of my horse, and placing me
- 5:01before him on the saddle of his own horse, bound me with rope
- 5:05and tied the reins of my horse to the back of his own.
- 5:09To struggle on my part was useless, because he was very
- 5:12strong. Soon we arrived at the cemetery,
- 5:17where we dismounted. For a while.
- 5:19He looked here and there and then stopped at a certain place
- 5:22and began to dig and ordered me to shovel the earth after him.
- 5:27We dug 2 graves. We mounted again and dismounted
- 5:31at the foot of the castle wall. He bound me carefully to the
- 5:35saddle of his horse and himself climbed up the wall.
- 5:40After a few minutes, from the top of the wall he threw down
- 5:43the headless corpse of a man who had just been murdered.
- 5:47He came down and placing the corpse on my horse, took it and
- 5:50myself to the graves we had dug. I was horror stricken and
- 5:55thought that one of the graves must be for the corpse and the
- 5:58other for me. But to my surprise he united me
- 6:03and asked me to help him bury the corpse, which I did.
- 6:07Then he turned to me and said, I know who you are, you are the
- 6:10Prime Minister of the state. Now listen to me and go and tell
- 6:14the King my story. I am a woman and have boundless
- 6:18love for my husband. This vile Prince, whose body we
- 6:22have just now buried, having fallen in love with me, killed
- 6:25my husband so that he might win my love.
- 6:29But I vowed by the sacred love I bore my husband to kill the
- 6:33murderer and bury him under my husband's feet.
- 6:37Now that that is accomplished, I vowed next to kill myself so
- 6:41that I might be buried by the side of my husband.
- 6:44For the love of heaven, bury me in this grave and tell my story
- 6:47to the king. This, she said, stabbed herself
- 6:52with a dagger and fell dead at my feet.
- 6:55I buried her in that grave near her husband.
- 6:59Here you have the example of a faithful and brave wife.
- 7:03If the unfaithful wife of the Goldsmith gave you occasion to
- 7:06order the death of all of the women of the realm, let this
- 7:10woman be the means of saving her sex from general slaughter.
- 7:14Why shall many good women die because of the wickedness of one
- 7:18woman? Thereupon the king revoked the
- 7:21order, and only the goldsmith's wife was put to death.
- 7:25The end. Thankfully that was a short one.
- 7:54I felt like this was all the fault of the Royals just looking
- 7:56to mess with people's lives. Hey, let's have a test.
- 8:00It might screw up their lives, but Oh well.
- 8:02If they hadn't gotten involved, the Goldsmith might still be
- 8:04alive. I like how the Prime Minister
- 8:07and his father were both smarter than the king and it doesn't
- 8:10feel good punishing any gender for one thing that somebody in
- 8:14that gender has done just silly. There are 9 more stories so I
- 8:19should be done with this book by 2027.
- 8:22And as always, thank you for listening to me and the podcast.
- 8:26Shout out is to a rather new show hosted by the Amazing under
- 8:30Baki. Second Guess Everything is a
- 8:32true crime pod that Alex really digs into and does the research
- 8:36for. She provides a wonderful story
- 8:38woven from a bunch of different sources.
- 8:41So go and check her out. She's awesome.
- 8:45And the listener shout out is to Saint Croix on the US Virgin

- 8:56live. And I was able to look up a
