- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, Luna is here too. Luna: Hey everyone! Last episode we were at the park — bustani. It was so nice. Today I'm in the mood for quiet. Let's go to a library. Lucas: Perfect choice. In Swahili, a library is maktaba. And if you want to borrow a book, you need a few key phrases. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. What's the first thing I'd say when I walk in? Lucas: You could say Nataka kitabu. That means 'I want a book.' Let's break it down. Nataka — I want. Kitabu — book. Nataka kitabu. Luna: Nataka kitabu. Nataka kitabu. Got it. I want a book. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you need to find where the books are, you ask Vitabu viko wapi? — 'Where are the books?' Vitabu is books, viko wapi is where are. Luna: Vitabu viko wapi? Vitabu viko wapi? That sounds like 'books are where?'. Lucas: Right. You can use it in any shop, too. If you're at a market and want to find something. Luna: Nice. So I walk in, say Nataka kitabu, and maybe ask Vitabu viko wapi? Lucas: Exactly. Then when you find a book you like, you need to ask to borrow it. Say Ninaomba kukopa kitabu — 'I request to borrow a book.' Ninaomba means I request, kukopa means to borrow. Luna: Ninaomba kukopa kitabu. That's a bit longer. Ninaomba kukopa kitabu. Lucas: You can also point at the book and ask Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? — 'Can I borrow this book?' Hiki means this. Luna: Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? Okay, I think I've got it. Lucas: And don't forget to say Asante sana when they help you. It's polite and goes a long way. Luna: Asante sana. Of course. So let me try a whole scene. I walk in, I say Nataka kitabu. Then I ask Vitabu viko wapi? I find a book, and I say Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? And then Asante sana. Lucas: Absolutely perfect. You sound like a pro. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, remember that a couple of dollars a month keeps these episodes coming — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Yeah, it really helps us keep making these little lessons. Okay, back to the library. So what if I want more than one book? Lucas: Good question. Vitabu is already plural. If you say Nataka vitabu, it means 'I want books.' And you can say Ningependa kukopa vitabu viwili — 'I would like to borrow two books.' But let's not overload today. Let's practice what we have. Luna: Okay, let's do a quick roleplay. You're the librarian, I'm the visitor. Lucas: Karibu! Welcome. Luna: Nataka kitabu, tafadhali. Lucas: Vitabu viko hapa. Here are the books. Luna: Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? Lucas: Ndiyo, unaweza. Yes, you can. Luna: Asante sana! Lucas: See? You just had a real Swahili conversation. Let's repeat the phrases one more time. First: Nataka kitabu. Luna: Nataka kitabu. Lucas: Vitabu viko wapi? Luna: Vitabu viko wapi? Lucas: Ninaomba kukopa kitabu. Luna: Ninaomba kukopa kitabu. Lucas: Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? Luna: Naweza kukopa kitabu hiki? Lucas: And Asante sana. Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: Great work today. Keep practicing these, and next time you're in a library or even a bookstore, you can use them. Luna: Yeah, I feel ready for my next visit to the maktaba. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: As always, thanks for learning with Fexingo. Practice these till we chat again.
