- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo! Ready for episode 11? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing my greetings from before. Let's do this. Lucas: Love it. So today we're going to focus on greetings by time of day. You already know a few of these, but we'll make sure you can use them naturally. Luna: Oh, like "good morning" and "good evening"? That sounds useful. Lucas: Exactly. We have four main ones. First, the general hello — you already know this: 你好. Luna: Right, that's like a universal greeting. Nei5 hou2. Lucas: Perfect. Then for morning, we say 早晨. Literally "early morning." Luna: Zou2 san4. That sounds like "good morning" — I remember from episode one. Lucas: Yes! And it's used until around noon. Then in the afternoon, we say 午安. Luna: Ng5 on1. So that's like "good afternoon." Lucas: Exactly. And in the evening or at night, we say 晚安. That's "good evening" or "good night." Luna: Maan5 on1. So it's like wishing someone peace at night. Lucas: You got it. Let's go through them once more. I'll say, you repeat. Lucas: 早晨 — zou2 san4. Luna: Zou2 san4. Lucas: 午安 — ng5 on1. Luna: Ng5 on1. Lucas: 晚安 — maan5 on1. Luna: Maan5 on1. Lucas: And of course, 你好 — nei5 hou2. Luna: Nei5 hou2. That one's easy. Lucas: Great. Now let's do a little role-play. Imagine it's morning. I'll be your friend, and you greet me. Lucas: Ready? Let's go. It's 8 AM. I see you at the coffee shop. Luna: Okay. Umm... 早晨! Lucas: 早晨! Nei5 hou2 maa3? Luna: Oh! How are you... I remember from episode two. 幾好,多謝. Lucas: There you go! That was smooth. Luna: Aww, thanks. So in the afternoon, I'd say 午安. Lucas: Exactly. Let's try another scene. It's 3 PM, and you meet your neighbor. Lucas: What do you say? Luna: 午安! Lucas: 午安! How was your day? Luna: Oh, I don't know that one yet. Let me just smile and nod. Lucas: That works too. Now evening — say it's 8 PM and you're leaving a friend's house. Luna: 晚安! Lucas: Perfect. And they might reply with 晚安 too. Luna: So it's a call-and-response kind of thing. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do a quick quiz. I'll say a time, and you say the right greeting. Lucas: 7 AM. Luna: 早晨. Lucas: 1 PM. Luna: 午安. Lucas: 10 PM. Luna: 晚安. Lucas: And if you don't know the time? Luna: Then 你好! Lucas: You're a natural. Let's run through all four one more time for practice. Lucas: Repeat after me: 你好. Luna: 你好. Lucas: 早晨. Luna: 早晨. Lucas: 午安. Luna: 午安. Lucas: 晚安. Luna: 晚安. Lucas: Awesome. So now you can greet people at any time of day. That's going to be super useful. Luna: Totally. I feel like I can actually use these on a daily basis. Lucas: For sure. And remember, you can also combine them with 你好嗎? from earlier episodes. Luna: Right, like 早晨, 你好嗎? Lucas: Exactly. That's a full morning greeting. Luna: This is so practical. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: My pleasure. Well, that's it for episode 11 of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Keep practicing these time greetings, and we'll catch you next time! Luna: Yes, practice makes perfect. Bye for now — 拜拜! Lucas: 拜拜! 遲啲見!
