- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux, the little flower, October 3 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, Mary Frances Teresa Martin was born at Alencon in France on 01/02/1873. She was brought up in a most Christian family and educated by the Benedictine nuns at Lisieux. Whilst still a child she felt drawn towards the cloister and at the age of 15 after much petition was allowed to enter the Carmelite convent in that town.
- 1:03At the age of 24 she slept sweetly in the peace of the Lord. The life of this young saint of Carmel is not distinguished by any heroic or very great deed. She simply served God with a constant and deciduous fidelity in little things. To her, the words of our Lord are applied by the church, unless you become as little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. I do not intend to remain inactive in heaven, this saint said on her deathbed.
- 1:48I wish to go on working for the church and for souls. After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. It is our Lord who is calling me to heaven and the hope of being able to love him as I have so much desired to do and the thought that I shall be able to make him loved by a number of souls who will praise him eternally. Apostolic Virgin such is the title which seems best to characterize Saint Teresa of the child Jesus. Like her Seraphic patron and mother, she desired to make the salvation of souls the object of her life in the cloister and thus her whole life was a sacrifice of love, a holocaust to merciful love.
- 2:46When she left Carmel for heaven, she repeated her intention of continuing to be an apostle in eternity as she had been here on earth. I feel that my mission is soon to begin, she said. My mission to make others love the good God as I love him, to teach my little way to souls. I wish to spend my heaven in doing good upon earth. Nor is this impossible since from the very heart of the beatific vision the angels keep watch over us.
- 3:29No, there can be no rest for me until the end of the world. But when the angel shall have said, time is no more, then I shall rest. Then I shall be able to rejoice, because the number of the elect will be complete. The humble little Flower was beatified by Pius XI in 1923, twenty six years after her death, canonized in 1925, and in 1927 proclaimed patroness of all Catholic missions. Let us offer the holy sacrifice in thanksgiving for all the graces bestowed on this saint and let us receive our Lord in holy communion in order to partake through him in the virtues which adorned her life.
- 4:36In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Venture forth from Lebanon and come to me. Venture forth, and come to me, my bride.
- 4:55What a wound thou hast made, my bride. My beloved, what a wound thou hast made in this heart of mine. Praise the Lord, ye children. Praise ye the name of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages.
- 5:24Amen. Venture forth from Lebanon, and come to me. Venture forth, and come to me, my bride. What a wound thou hast made, my bride. My beloved, what a wound thou hast made in this heart of mine.
- 5:46The Collect. Let us pray. O Lord, who hast said, unless you become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven, Grant unto us we beseech thee so to follow in humility and simplicity of heart the footsteps of Saint Teresa, thy Virgin, that we may obtain everlasting rewards who livest in reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the prophet Isaiah.
- 6:33Thus says the Lord God, peace shall flow through her like a river. The wealth of nations shall pour into her like a torrent in flood. This shall be the milk you drain like children carried at the breast fondled on her mother's lap. I will console you then like a mother caressing her son, and all your consolation shall be in Jerusalem. Your eyes shall be feasted with it, your hearts contented, your whole frame vigorous as fresh grass.
- 7:13Thus will the Lord make his power known to his servants. The gradual. I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hidden all this from the wise and the prudent and revealed it to little children. O Lord, thou hast been my hope from my youth. Alleluia.
- 7:46Alleluia. Yours to bud forth like a rose bush that is planted by running water. Yours to yield fragrance of incense. Yours to blossom like the lily, and smell sweet, and put forth leaves for your adornment, yours to sing songs of praise, and bless the Lord for all the things he has made. Alleluia.
- 8:20A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. The disciples came to Jesus at that time and said, tell us who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Whereupon Jesus called to his side a little child to whom he gave a place in the midst of them and said, believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. He is greatest in the kingdom of heaven who will abase himself like this little child. The offertory.
- 9:06My soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has found joy in God who is my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid. He who is mighty has wrought for me his wonders. The secret. May the holy prayers of Saint Teresa, thy Virgin, we beseech thee, commend our sacrifice to thee, O Lord.
- 9:39In her honor we solemnly offer it. In view then of her merits. Do thou accept it through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify.
- 10:39We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 11:09Hosanna in the highest. The communion. The Lord himself would teach her and lead her on her journey protecting her as though she were the apple of his eye. He spread eagle's wings to carry her, took her upon his shoulders. The Lord himself would be her only guide.
- 11:40The post communion. Let us pray. May the heavenly mystery, o lord, inflame us with the fire of that love by which Saint Teresa, thy virgin, offered herself to thee as a victim of charity for mankind through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 12:26Amen. Saint Therese of the holy face, pray for us.
