- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, a
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew Mcgibbon for August 11th.
- 0:13Today is National Son and Daughter Day and if you're a
- 0:17parent, you know that every day is kind of your kids day anyway.
- 0:22But today makes it official. This heartwarming holiday
- 0:25encourages parents to take extra time to appreciate the
- 0:28incredible gift of being someone's mom or dad.
- 0:32National Son and Daughter Day celebrates that unique,
- 0:35irreplaceable bond between parents and children.
- 0:38Whether your kids are toddlers who think they're a superhero,
- 0:42teenagers who think you know absolutely nothing, or adults
- 0:47who've come full circle and realize that maybe you do know a
- 0:50thing or two. It's a day to set aside the
- 0:53daily routines, the nagging about homework and chores, the
- 0:58rushing from one activity to another, and just focus on the
- 1:03pure joy of watching these amazing humans that you helped
- 1:07bring into the world grow and become themselves.
- 1:12The beauty about this day is it reminds us that being a parent
- 1:15isn't just about providing, protecting, and problem solving.
- 1:20It's also about celebrating who your children are right now, in
- 1:24this moment, exactly as they are.
- 1:28Which brings us to today's quote from the writer Elizabeth Stone,
- 1:33who perfectly captured the essence of parenthood when she
- 1:36said making the decision to have a child, it is to decide forever
- 1:43to have your heart go walking around outside your body.
- 1:47Stone captured something that's impossible to explain to people
- 1:50who don't have children. That profound shift that happens
- 1:53the moment you become responsible for another human
- 1:56being's well-being and happiness.
- 1:59When they're little, it's obvious.
- 2:01You feel their scraped knees like they're your own.
- 2:03You beam with pride at their first steps, their first words.
- 2:09But it doesn't stop there. When they're grown, you still
- 2:12worry. When they're late getting home,
- 2:15you still appreciate their victories like they're your own.
- 2:18You still want to fix their problems, even when you know
- 2:22they need to fix them themselves.
- 2:26That's the beautiful vulnerability of parenthood.
- 2:29Loving someone so much that their well-being becomes more
- 2:32important than your own comfort, your own safety, sometimes even
- 2:36your own happiness. So today, whether your sons and
- 2:39daughters are 5 or 50, take a moment to tell them how proud
- 2:44you are of who they are. Not just what they've
- 2:46accomplished, but who they are as human beings.
- 2:50Share memory, listen to their dreams, or just spend some
- 2:54unstructured time together. Because Elizabeth Stone was
- 2:58right. They are your heart walking
- 3:02around outside your body. And that's not a burden.
- 3:06That's one of life's great privileges.
- 3:09I'm on my own for a few weeks as the kids are on vacation
- 3:13visiting family in Europe. I'll be seeing them on a video
- 3:16call today, but it isn't the same thing as getting a hug in
- 3:20person, and I can tell that our dog misses them, too.
- 3:26The house is oddly quiet without them yelling, fighting and
- 3:30laughing. And suddenly the cats really
- 3:34like me, which is weird. That's going to do it for today.
- 3:40May your heart be full of gratitude for the amazing humans
- 3:43you get to call your children. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:47for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:51Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
