Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. OK, I need to issue a formal
- 0:24apology to anyone that listened to Friday's episode.
- 0:27I was very quickly informed that it's actually not Tory Lanez,
- 0:32it's Tory Lanes. And I just put this very bougie
- 0:36flair on his name. And when the first comment came
- 0:40through about that, I was like, Oh my God, that's so
- 0:43embarrassing. I was sitting on the couch with
- 0:45my husband and we were looking at it just dying.
- 0:48Like we were laughing so hard. I literally laughed for like an
- 0:51hour. I could not get over it.
- 0:52I was like, what the fuck? What the fuck is wrong with me?
- 0:55I'm Jed. And then I had comments of
- 0:57people, you guys being like, Oh my God.
- 0:58I had to like run to the comments to see if anybody else
- 1:01commented about this. I had to check if maybe I just
- 1:04thought his name was wrong, like if I was saying it wrong this
- 1:07whole time. It is not Linnez, it is Lanes.
- 1:10I just had never heard it said out loud.
- 1:12OK, I've only read it in relation to Megan the Stallion.
- 1:15I just put my own flair on it, I guess.
- 1:17All right, before I get into the stories for today, Please
- 1:20remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 1:22Please Spotify star rate US. It helps us so much.
- 1:25I'm noticing you guys are rating and I'm so thankful because we
- 1:28are trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings.
- 1:31Let's say by the end of the year, let's give us like 3 1/2
- 1:33months. Leave us an Apple review,
- 1:35subscribe to us on YouTube, all that good stuff.
- 1:38All right, the first story that I have for you guys is Pilates
- 1:41Body Raven is facing backlash after she seemingly posted a hot
- 1:46take about why Pilates should remain not diverse and
- 1:50inaccessible. And you will understand why I
- 1:53said seemingly in a minute. So Raven, who goes by Pilates
- 1:57Body Raven on social media, is a fitness influencer and former
- 2:00reality star from Love is Blind Season 3.
- 2:03She has a popular online Pilates business where she charges 3999
- 2:07per month or $479 a year for her virtual program.
- 2:12Most in person Pilates classes cost like $40.
- 2:16Basically that exact price for a single class.
- 2:19So that's why this entire saga is even more confusing.
- 2:23A few days ago Raven posted a quote UN quote hot take on
- 2:26TikTok about why the price of Pilates is justified.
- 2:30I think I think that's what she was getting at.
- 2:32It's going to be an extremely hot take for my Pilates girls.
- 2:36What are some words that you think about when you think of
- 2:39like a really nice designer brand?
- 2:41I think of legacy, think about craftsmanship.
- 2:45I know a lot of the products are probably like handmade bolt.
- 2:49Check them over and over again to make sure the quality is
- 2:52there. OK, the design is there.
- 2:55And that's why we pay top dollar.
- 2:58We pay our top coins for these designer items, right?
- 3:02Like you would never walk into Bottega and be like, where is
- 3:05the diversity? Where is the accessibility?
- 3:08Babe? There is no accessibility.
- 3:10This is Bottega. I want you to think the same way
- 3:12about Pilates. And I know a lot of us who've
- 3:14just gotten into this, or maybe we're no instructors.
- 3:17We have like been trained. Pilates is a legacy, OK?
- 3:21People have worked generations to preserve this method of
- 3:25exercise. To even just training an
- 3:27instructor classically through a good program takes 500 hours
- 3:33minimum. You can probably see why I said
- 3:35I think because the point she was trying to make was
- 3:39confusing. It was not very strong and there
- 3:42are very mixed opinions about like what she was trying to get
- 3:45across. However, this confusion of
- 3:47course has really snowballed. A lot of people are taking her
- 3:51video in bad faith. I didn't know who she was before
- 3:53this. I don't have any opinion on her.
- 3:55This is not me being like parasocial about her.
- 3:57I'm just saying like there are conflicting I guess ways that
- 4:00people have taken this video but the vast majority of people have
- 4:03taken it or interpreted treated it as her saying like This is
- 4:07why Basically trying to justify This is why Pilates is
- 4:10exclusive, reserved for whiteness and if it was diverse
- 4:15then it would cheapen the experience you.
- 4:17Really want my fault. Trying to gentrify exercise
- 4:20Pilates was started by Joseph Pilates.
- 4:23Some dude that didn't have the means to exercise the way he
- 4:27wanted to so he did some makeshift stuffing putting
- 4:29together hospital beds and stuff in Germany you're trying to tell
- 4:32me is only accessible to rich if designer exercises now and then
- 4:36she going to say will it takes 500 hours to become a Pilates
- 4:40instructor minimum. That's what she did it one of
- 4:43them minimum it will taught you that it take fit fingers one of
- 4:47hours just to become a Barber. This has led to a flood of
- 4:51videos on TikTok pushing back obviously, and talking about the
- 4:55origins of Pilates and how that was actually anything but like
- 5:00elevated or exclusive. So for anyone who doesn't know,
- 5:03the Pilates method was created in the early 20th century by a
- 5:08German man named Joseph Pilates. He designed a system of
- 5:11exercises called contradology to help him recover from childhood
- 5:15illnesses during World War One. He adapted and refined the
- 5:19practice using bed springs to build resistance based equipment
- 5:24for rehabilitating injured soldiers.
- 5:27And he did a lot of this while he was in prison.
- 5:30Now despite Raven's take and how TikTok is taking it, a lot of
- 5:34people especially on Reddit are defending her saying that she
- 5:38just didn't articulate herself well.
- 5:40So this one comment on Reddit says I don't think she
- 5:43articulated it well but I took it to mean that a well trained
- 5:46instructor has put in 500 hours which takes time and money.
- 5:49Basically you get what you pay for.
- 5:52Pilates is inaccessible because good instructors are paid what
- 5:55they are worth and therefore out of reach for a lot of people.
- 5:58She didn't say, nor do I think she was trying to imply that it
- 6:00should be inaccessible. Another comment says her whole
- 6:03thing is making it accessible. Free classes, modifications,
- 6:06advancements. So every class is for everybody
- 6:09at every level. The Internet loves to hate her.
- 6:12Membership is 3999 a month and the app slash site have so many
- 6:15options. Y'all can read into whatever and
- 6:18cancel her but this is someone who cares for making things
- 6:20accessible. OK, so Ray Evan has removed her
- 6:23original video and has now addressed the backlash in an
- 6:25apology video. I want to address my set of my
- 6:28previous video. Start by saying classism,
- 6:31elitism, or anything adding to the larger conversation of like
- 6:35exclusion in Wellness or fitness is unacceptable.
- 6:39Insight is always 2020 and I see how my words contributed to that
- 6:43narrative. And even though that wasn't my
- 6:45intention, I know that intention doesn't erase impact.
- 6:49But my mission has always been to share my passion for Pilates
- 6:53and Wellness with as many people as possible, specifically women.
- 6:58Like I care about women and everyone else too, but I really
- 7:02care about supporting women. If I made you feel like
- 7:06plottings wasn't for you, I have literally failed at my entire
- 7:10mission and let y'all down. Honestly, being a black
- 7:12instructor in this space is what motivates me to consistently
- 7:16perfect my craft, to make the best possible product that I
- 7:21can, and to try to get the plottings word out there with as
- 7:24little barriers as possible. However, creating accessibility
- 7:29is about more than content. It's also about culture, words,
- 7:34nuance, actions and I missed the mark.
- 7:38Unfortunately, the Internet won't let her have this either
- 7:42because everyone's saying that it sounds like this was written
- 7:44by ChatGPT. And obviously I have no idea if
- 7:47this was written by ChatGPT or not, and I know we've talked
- 7:50about this a lot on this podcast, but it does concern me
- 7:54that it seems collectively we just like jump to believing that
- 7:58people are using generative AI in situations where they sound
- 8:03articulate, well spoken, when something sounds too polished.
- 8:08We saw this with the M dash discourse like justice for the
- 8:12M-I have written with M dashes for literally years and years
- 8:17and years. My entire craft before
- 8:19Centennial was writing like that was literally what I was a
- 8:23writer. And I have used M-AS.
- 8:25Every writer that I know in media uses M dashes.
- 8:29And now we're all afraid to write properly with M dashes
- 8:32because someone's going to be like ChatGPT.
- 8:34People think our deep dives are written by ChatGPT because
- 8:37they're like academic. Like I just can't.
- 8:39So I really, I, I don't know if she used ChatGPT.
- 8:42Maybe it's not how she normally talks.
- 8:43Like I said, I wasn't super familiar with her before this,
- 8:45but like I can't with those accusations.
- 8:49Some people are actually just well spoken.
- 8:51Some people are actually just well researched.
- 8:53Some people know how to write. How do you think Chachi PT
- 8:58learns to use M dashes? They're trained with academic
- 9:02sources. OK.
- 9:02Anyways, so I actually am happy that we're having this
- 9:06conversation though, like around Pilates because the Wellness
- 9:09industry and that like Pilates Princess elitism like it is out
- 9:13of control right now. And I love how now social media
- 9:16is flooded with all these videos talking about how Pilates was
- 9:19invented by a circus performer in a prison.
- 9:22Basically. Not because I want like a gotcha
- 9:24moment for the Pilates girlies, but as somebody who is very
- 9:27entrenched or immersed in the online fitness community myself,
- 9:31the elitism is damaging, especially to beginners who are
- 9:35made to feel totally out of place in these spaces.
- 9:38Like I started my hardcore fitness journey in 2017 and I'm
- 9:42so glad that I did it back then and not now.
- 9:45Because back then there were just fewer expectations on what
- 9:49working out looked like from like an aesthetic point of view.
- 9:52And it made the experience for me a much less daunting to get
- 9:56into the gym. There were fewer expectations
- 9:58that working out looked a certain way and also that it was
- 10:01for a certain type of person. I feel I do think this like,
- 10:04Pilates Princess aesthetic vibe has really altered who we feel
- 10:12is worthy of like, working out and looking cute and wearing
- 10:15these matching sets and having like the whole like experience
- 10:18around working out. The next story that I have for
- 10:20you guys is that TikTok star Katie Fang has landed a column
- 10:24for The Cut. OK, so Katie is 19.
- 10:28I had no idea until I started researching for this story.
- 10:31I watch her on and off. Like when she comes up on my For
- 10:34You page, I'll watch her videos. I had no idea she was so young.
- 10:36Obviously you can tell she's young, but like, I can't believe
- 10:38she's so young. I was struck to the core.
- 10:41So yeah, she has been tapped by The Cut for a beauty column.
- 10:45So she's a New York City based creator.
- 10:47She shot to TikTok fame for her makeup routines and her Get
- 10:50Ready with me videos. She's actually Canadian girly
- 10:52too. Like me, she's from Vancouver
- 10:55and she built her following of over 6 million in just two years
- 11:00and then obviously now lives in New York.
- 11:01So she will be writing for The Cut on what's popular and
- 11:04trending in the beauty space. This is from the Cuts
- 11:07announcement quote. In true Fang fashion, her column
- 11:09debuts today with a post on the makeup products she would
- 11:12splurge on. And though she would skip Intel,
- 11:14Fang has gathered while trying the hundreds of products that
- 11:17she gets sent. Consider her your younger or
- 11:19older sister who always has a scoop on the best and latest
- 11:23beauty launches. OK, so I don't know if this will
- 11:26really work to be honest. I still don't think likethe.com
- 11:29is where young people want to be getting their information from.
- 11:33I think this might have worked better if it was in a newsletter
- 11:35format. I'm not sure if like on their
- 11:37website asa.com it will work, but I still love that The Cut is
- 11:40truly one of the only like really mainstream media brands
- 11:44collaborating with the creator economy in actual like, relevant
- 11:48and interesting ways rather than looking at creators as
- 11:51competition. That's a huge problem, at least
- 11:54in the Australian media industry.
- 11:55There is so little collaboration between media and influencer
- 11:58slash creators and all the budgets just go to influencers
- 12:01and creators because of media cannot find interesting,
- 12:05meaningful, relevant ways to work with them too, except for
- 12:09us. OK, the next story that I have
- 12:11for you guys is that Ed Sheeran has addressed criticism from
- 12:16online commentator The Swift Ologist in a new podcast for the
- 12:19New York Times. Ed Sheeran, he just did a
- 12:21podcast interview with The New York Times, and in it he
- 12:24addressed some criticism that he's received from the
- 12:26swiftologist. And this has become kind of like
- 12:29a big piece of news amongst pop culture music fans online.
- 12:33I've talked about the swiftologist a few times lately,
- 12:35but his name is Zachary. He's 28 years old, and he makes
- 12:39like, music critique slash commentary content.
- 12:42He's divisive because many find his delivery quite harsh.
- 12:46But I will say he's also one of the main online voices right now
- 12:50who is like quite big, that's doing like actual critiques of
- 12:54the music industry. And he's not afraid to give
- 12:57like, negative feedback or negative reviews.
- 13:00Fandom culture has made it so that, like, journalists who give
- 13:03actual critiques of new music or of artists are sometimes
- 13:07harassed so harshly that it's really challenged and changed
- 13:11music journalism, especially when it's done on social media
- 13:14specifically. And this is only made worse by
- 13:17the kind of like collective mindset that everyone seems to
- 13:20have now where it's like, oh, just let people like what they
- 13:22want, you know, don't be such a hater.
- 13:25And that mentality just goes against like the entire
- 13:27discipline of art critique. So I don't really subscribe to
- 13:31that. But anyways, a few months ago,
- 13:33Zachary he made content about how Ed Sheeran has and off and
- 13:37one of his main reasons was because Ed Sheeran is too
- 13:40focused on numbers and not focused enough on the art of
- 13:44creating music. Now, Zachary referenced an
- 13:46interview that Ed Sheeran had done years ago, saying that he
- 13:50woke up every day and checked his streaming numbers.
- 13:52Interestingly, when this happened, Ed Sheeran actually
- 13:55responded. He was in the comments section.
- 13:57OK. And then his official like
- 13:59Instagram. It's like a fan page, but also
- 14:02his official Instagram. It's called Ed HQ made fun of
- 14:05this with just in a post, like right after that happened.
- 14:09So the Ed HQ page posted a photo of a fan holding a sign that
- 14:13read list of pricks #1 Rod Stewart #2 the swiftologist and
- 14:17#3 all of Norwich City FC. So like, this commentary
- 14:22undoubtedly got under Ed Sheeran's skin.
- 14:25Now, in this new podcast interview with the New York
- 14:27Times, Ed Sheeran was asked if this is something that he's
- 14:31still obsessed with. And he basically said no.
- 14:33So this is what he said. I sort of got over all of that
- 14:35at the end of the Divide tour. I think all of that was linked
- 14:38to being a quite unpopular, nerdy kid at school who played
- 14:42music that everyone took the piss out of.
- 14:44No one ever really thought that I'd be successful.
- 14:47Then success started to happen and I was getting obsessed with
- 14:50the fact that success was happening and it was getting
- 14:52bigger and bigger and bigger. I describe it like, if Usain
- 14:55Bolt sets a record, someone's going to break that record
- 14:57eventually, and I think he's probably got over that fact.
- 15:01But everything I was doing seemed to be working and I was
- 15:03pushing it further and further After the Divide tour had broken
- 15:06all these records and shape of you had done this and that.
- 15:09It got to the point where I was like, cool, I've done it and
- 15:11someone else is going to beat those records, but at least I've
- 15:13done it. Then you can kind of move on.
- 15:15So what this new podcast interview has done is start this
- 15:18big discourse on TikTok about the relevancy of online creators
- 15:22and how they are starting to shape mainstream pop culture in
- 15:26very meaningful ways. I mean, I agree with that.
- 15:28I think somebody like the Swift Ologist has much bigger reach,
- 15:32especially to younger audiences. Then I don't know, probably
- 15:36Pitchfork or, you know, Billboard, some of those kind of
- 15:39bigger, like industry music publications that would
- 15:42typically be doing these critiques.
- 15:44But I also want to say, like in Defensive Ed Sheeran, I actually
- 15:47understand why he would want to clear this up because that
- 15:50became like a big narrative. Like I said, the Swiftologist
- 15:52has a huge platform and I understand why he'd want to
- 15:56clear this up because like two things can be true.
- 15:58Can be obsessed with being successful at your craft while
- 16:02also doing it for the love of that craft.
- 16:05Like Ed Sheeran never said that he plays music or creates music
- 16:10so that he can have the biggest streaming numbers and break
- 16:13records. Like he obviously does it for
- 16:15himself because that's what he loves and what he's good at,
- 16:18what he's passionate about. But at the same time, of course,
- 16:21you would like to be successful at the thing that you are trying
- 16:23to do and trying to like make a living from.
- 16:26That's how I take it. OK.
- 16:27And the last story that I have for you guys, this is just a
- 16:29quick little update from the story that I reported on on
- 16:32Friday about the Gen. Z Nepalese who are protesting
- 16:35against government corruption and a national social media ban,
- 16:38which as we know, resulted in the prime Mr. stepping down from
- 16:41his post. OK, so I'm not going to go
- 16:44through the whole story because I literally just reported on it
- 16:46in last week's episode, like on our most recent episode.
- 16:49But the update is that this group of Gen.
- 16:52Z activists have selected a new candidate to run for Prime
- 16:55Minister to represent their interests via a poll on Discord.
- 16:59This is so cool. OK, so this is from the ABC
- 17:02quote. Within six months, a national
- 17:04election will be held alongside the essential amendments needed
- 17:07to safeguard the future of our youth and generations to come,
- 17:10the post by Hami Nepal, one of the organizations behind the
- 17:13protests, read. A step necessary to prevent an
- 17:15inevitable power vacuum. The plan?
- 17:18Select a representative to present their agenda to the
- 17:20president, followed by an election in six months and a
- 17:23promise that every citizen will have the right to cast their
- 17:26vote freely and choose their candidate.
- 17:28So yeah, they literally had a poll on Discord.
- 17:30Like, that's so cool. This is so badass.
- 17:32I'm obsessed with this story. They are so cool.
- 17:35I hope they get everything that they want.
- 17:37All right, guys. Well, that's it for mini scroll
- 17:39today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 17:40I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 17:43and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US, buy
- 17:45us a coffee if you feel so inclined.
- 17:48And I will talk to you tomorrow. Bye.
