- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny Conversation brought to
- 0:04you by Jags, the leader in high performance aftermarket car
- 0:09parts. Remember to go to jags.com for
- 0:12everything you need to fix your hot rods up.
- 0:16Well, the first one was so good that we got to do another
- 0:21conversation with my dear friend Greg Stump, the owner of Off
- 0:26Axis Paint. Greg, everybody was so intrigued
- 0:31with the one hour conversation that we had with you that they
- 0:35wanted to know the business of these in car cameras.
- 0:40They see these helmets painted up.
- 0:43How much do the helmets cost you?
- 0:45You win the Daytona 500, then all of a sudden that sponsor
- 0:51wants more helmets painted. So I guess the best place to
- 0:55start is if I want a helmet, I get a hold of off Axis paint.
- 1:02How do I get a hold of you and how do we start talking about
- 1:06pricing? How much do these helmets cost?
- 1:08Yeah, most of the time, you know, our Instagram, DMS or
- 1:11Facebook, you know, or my my phone number is on the website.
- 1:14So it's it's a 417 number. Just so everyone knows it's
- 1:17still Missouri. Just 'cause I'm.
- 1:18Branson, MO. Holding true to my roots, you
- 1:21know, But yeah, just, you know, message us on there and there's
- 1:25a couple different price points, you know, depending on, you
- 1:29know, hey my my kids 8 and he's racing at Mill bridge down the
- 1:32road and he wants a dirt helmet painted, you know.
- 1:33Well, I'm not going to charge him the same as a cup helmet,
- 1:36but I'm also not going to put the most hours into that one,
- 1:39you know, for somebody young, you know, so obviously yours
- 1:42are, you know, those are 3040 hour masterpieces.
- 1:46You know that we paint for that, that you go, you know, throw
- 1:49rocks at at the dirt track. But you know, it just really
- 1:54depends. Every every once in a while
- 1:56we'll do you know 65850, you know the most of our our cup
- 2:01helmets are are well over 2000. So it just depends on, you know
- 2:05honestly how much work like I said, you know, 30 to 40 hours
- 2:08and I have a whole team of of four artists here and you know
- 2:12this is how they make a living. It's not a, it's not a hobby for
- 2:14anybody here. So I think when that comes in
- 2:18mind, it's like oh, this guy's not doing it out of his garage.
- 2:21They're using you know top of the line Cheryl Williams paint
- 2:23and you know nice clear coats it in it is hand done artwork you
- 2:28know which which takes a ton of time it's it's much easier just
- 2:31to hit print on the computer and you know wrap one of these
- 2:34things and but it just doesn't look as good You know you
- 2:36wouldn't you wouldn't like it if I if I took an hour to do yours
- 2:40and it just looked OK you know so I think that's the biggest
- 2:43thing is just you know figuring out what they want obviously you
- 2:47know making it personable and then the the price kind of
- 2:50follows thereafter just knowing you know what they want to do on
- 2:53the helmet. So let's talk about why they are
- 2:57what they are, 650 dollars, $800 the more time all the way up to
- 3:032000. So it's we're going to have
- 3:05Charlie drop a picture in right here of the helmets in their raw
- 3:10form. We see shelves of black helmets,
- 3:14white helmets, they're taped off.
- 3:17So my question to you is when you deal with these helmet
- 3:21companies, they send you just the shell first.
- 3:25So tell me the timeline as you get the shell, then what?
- 3:29Yeah. So most of the time they come
- 3:31straight from the factory and like I said, we live right here
- 3:33in Morrisville. So we get pretty, we get pretty
- 3:35spoiled having everybody right here in town and all the parts
- 3:38and pieces that we could, you know, ever possibly need, you
- 3:41know, so having radios and air channels, you know, readily
- 3:44available, if somebody calls an audible or you know, needs
- 3:47something, you know, they call me on Monday and they need a
- 3:49helmet for Bristol this weekend. You know, we can, we can, we can
- 3:52handle that order. Whereas someone across the
- 3:54country, you know, probably wouldn't be able to ship and
- 3:57back and forth and have dry time, you know, so the that
- 4:01picture there, all those black ones are all carbon fiber up
- 4:04top, you know, which is going to be more expensive than like your
- 4:07regular composite shell, which are you know, all those white
- 4:10ones there. So, you know, there's a bunch of
- 4:13different types of carbon weaves.
- 4:15There's different carbon that has to be refrigerated, you
- 4:18know, the entire time when they're building the process.
- 4:20Oh. So we just don't.
- 4:21We just don't throw some paint on.
- 4:22It there, yeah. So I mean it is coming from the
- 4:25factory, you know every helmet that we paint, there's it's not
- 4:29a motorcycle helmet off your local dealership, you know off,
- 4:34you know the the Rusty Wallace motorcycle shop down the street,
- 4:37you know, so it's not ADOT helmet, It is a, you know, SFI
- 4:42approved helmet and it's all snow rating and all that.
- 4:45So go ahead, I can tell you you got questions.
- 4:49Yeah, so. So I know because I've been in
- 4:52off axis. Yeah, paint, I've been in your
- 4:55place. So the manufacturer just sends
- 4:58you the shell. Now you paint it.
- 5:01Now you send it back to them most of the time.
- 5:05Most of the time that's how it works.
- 5:07So and again, like there's like a bell helmet comes in, right?
- 5:12Well, there's a different bell helmet for IndyCar or open wheel
- 5:16cars then what NASCAR would run. So it's it's a lot of different
- 5:20moving parts, different things you got to pay attention to.
- 5:24Everyone runs, you know, a different style airline inlet.
- 5:28You know, like that one doesn't have an air channel on it, but
- 5:30your other ones do, right? You bring up a good point.
- 5:33You're dealing with the air inlet.
- 5:34You got lots of things up here. You got to take them off.
- 5:37You know, and and Hendrick makes their own air channel.
- 5:40Gibbs makes their own air channel.
- 5:41We make our own air channel. I mean, there's a million
- 5:43different things that go into this.
- 5:46And then, you know, you got drink tubes to go around, you
- 5:49know, figuring out where logos need to go, 'cause Martin Truex
- 5:52runs a different, you know, drink tube than Justin Algar,
- 5:55you know, So everyone just got a different system, you know, then
- 5:59we get them radioed up and everyone does, you know,
- 6:02different. Everyone does like the ear cups
- 6:03now or they have the earbuds, like like what you have, you
- 6:07know, there's there's a lot of different options that go into
- 6:09these things. And then on top of all that, the
- 6:12different types of carbon fiber, which I was telling you all, you
- 6:16know, all my cup guys, they run the lightest of the lightest of
- 6:19the lightest because that engineer on that car wants
- 6:22nothing at it. You know, they weigh our helmets
- 6:24before we paint them and after we paint them.
- 6:26Just to know. Just to know exactly how much
- 6:29weight I add to that helmet. And I've, you know, I've not
- 6:32been. I've been cussed out.
- 6:33But you know I'm talking to him saying hey you know this is a
- 6:37little heavy on on this helmet. You know I'm not going to tell
- 6:39you which team is you know doing that or but they are very very
- 6:44keyed into it and which makes my job a little hard because you
- 6:48know, hey I want Chrome and I want metal flake and all this
- 6:51stuff and I want the coolest helmet ever.
- 6:53Well all that adds weight to the shell you know.
- 6:55So I have the balance of OK, cool looking helmet but also
- 6:59keep the race team happy and under budget on their side.
- 7:03So I'm I'm kind of the guy stuck in the middle of trying to keep
- 7:06sponsor, driver, engineer, everybody happy.
- 7:08Yeah. OK.
- 7:09Let's wrap it up like this. OK, so I don't want anything on
- 7:14the helmet, but the sponsors who are spending $20 million or at
- 7:19your local dirt track, somebody just gave you 5 grand.
- 7:23Mike Harrison is sponsoring. You know, Josh Carroll gave him,
- 7:27bought him a car for $30,000. You know, how do you balance
- 7:32that? You're trying to make the
- 7:33engineers happy with the helmet light, but yet you got somebody
- 7:36over here giving you 5 grand for your dirt car this year and they
- 7:41want and they want their name on your helmet.
- 7:42It's a hard balance. It's definitely an Ave.
- 7:45You know, I didn't see myself having to deal with or so.
- 7:50And you know, depending on who it is or what team, it can be a
- 7:54lot of emails going back and forth to people, so.
- 7:57And and last but not least, the Daytona 500 winner this year,
- 8:02William Byron. He's going to have sponsors that
- 8:05want copies of the helmet. Tell me, what kind of helmets
- 8:09are these? How much do those cost?
- 8:11Let's say Jason Fager wins up here at at Farmer City.
- 8:16He's the Missouri, Illinois. Ricky win there, yeah.
- 8:19Yeah, well it's his. It's his home and and and the
- 8:22sponsors, they don't maybe want his helmet, but they want a
- 8:26duplicate helmet just like William Byron won the Daytona
- 8:29505 hundred and then the sponsors want a copy of his
- 8:34helmet. Tell me what can those prices
- 8:37run? What kind of helmets are these?
- 8:38I mean it's it's a dead on replica.
- 8:41I don't, I don't have a carding helmet or you know something a
- 8:44little cheaper like they want a carbon helmet then that's, you
- 8:46know, they get exactly what William wears, you know, to be a
- 8:49sponsor of that car. So you know, and it's not
- 8:52something I like pull a drawer out and have the stencil of
- 8:56William Byron's helmet. I mean we have to hand tape that
- 8:59entire thing. So it's not anything cheaper or
- 9:01anything like that. We have to do the entire whole
- 9:03process over. It might be a little easier
- 9:05because we don't have to mix the colors every time.
- 9:08But you know, there's been a couple sponsors.
- 9:10We're like, hey we want thirty of these same helmets and
- 9:13that's, you know, that's that's week's worth of work that you're
- 9:16doing the same color all day long and you get sick of that
- 9:20same Pantone color doing it over and over.
- 9:23So it just depends. Like I said, you know some of
- 9:25the light, lightweight carbon helmets now you know they can
- 9:28run $5500 before we even put artwork on them.
- 9:32You know, so. Holy moly.
- 9:35There's no telling. You know, once radios paint
- 9:38everything. I mean, some of these helmets
- 9:40could be close to 10 grand, you know, you.
- 9:42Bring a good point up radio paint.
- 9:44Right paint. Air communication?
- 9:48Well, listen, you sure did in 10 minutes.
- 9:51Give us a lot of information. Thanks for doing a follow up of
- 9:55the first kind of conversation. These are things that fans want
- 9:59to know. How much do they cost?
- 10:01All you got to do. And you got to think of someone
- 10:03like Kyle Busch when he was running M&M's, You got M&M's,
- 10:05Skittles, Snickers, Interstate batteries, Toyota, I mean tons
- 10:10of helmets, right? And that's, you know, that's
- 10:12sponsors footing that bill for it.
- 10:14Herman, how can anybody make a living painting helmets?
- 10:17Well, there's one race car driver that needs about 12
- 10:20helmets per year. Keeps us very very busy to to no
- 10:25sleep on end here. All right race fans, we answered
- 10:29your question. And remember we are in podcast
- 10:32form. Listen to us on the way to work.
- 10:35On the way home, we are in iTunes and Spotify until the
- 10:40next Kenny conversation.
