- 0:04Speaker 1: Your host Coleen Witt, and today we have very special
- 0:07Speaker 1: guest TV and radio personality, CC Valencia is in the
- 0:12Speaker 1: building from ninety three point five KD shout out, but
- 0:15Speaker 1: super excited.
- 0:16Speaker 2: They have you so excited?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Yes, I was like calling text in bothering people.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Was on it.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I have to say that she was on it like
- 0:23Speaker 1: a true woman was. I was an email text calls, annoying.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I will not stop until I'm like she better.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Please please God no.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And then when I've heard the concept of this show,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I just thought it was so amazing because I never
- 0:38Speaker 2: seen anything like this before. So I was like, oh,
- 0:41Speaker 2: this is really a one of a kind, Like I
- 0:43Speaker 2: love this.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I used to think it was like all about inspiring
- 0:46Speaker 1: then Underdog, But the more I hear like fans talk,
- 0:49Speaker 1: They're like, Yo, this is like a real chance to
- 0:51Speaker 1: get to know the people that we like, we watch
- 0:54Speaker 1: and right admire, Like we get to really and get
- 0:57Speaker 1: in here from you.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yay. You know what I mean that you we have
- 1:00Speaker 2: never heard before?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Exactly absolutely so speaking of stories we ain't never heard before,
- 1:06Speaker 1: cee ce, Yes, what is the broke dish.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You are gonna have me eating today.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Okay. So the broke dish that I used to eat
- 1:13Speaker 2: while growing up was my mom would cut tortillas and
- 1:18Speaker 2: we would fry them, and then we would add a
- 1:20Speaker 2: little bit of sea.
- 1:23Speaker 3: We didn't.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We had these, okay, and we ate these with everything,
- 1:26Speaker 2: even white bread.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Is that chicken hot dogs?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Chicken hot dogs?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Slice them and then you fry them and then you
- 1:31Speaker 2: put the egg and I promise you it. I know
- 1:33Speaker 2: it's a broke meal, but it's like the most delicious
- 1:35Speaker 2: broke meal you ever had. It's all the flavors.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Teach me, show me.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Okay, I stand up to do this.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Alright, let's go.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's so funny. So Jared shout out to Jared. Everyone
- 2:01Speaker 1: no one ever gets to see Jared. He's like the
- 2:02Speaker 1: guy from Home Improvement behind the fence. Yes, but Jared
- 2:06Speaker 1: is Mexican, so like he understands it to a certain degree,
- 2:10Speaker 1: way better than meal.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yes his life. Yes.
- 2:13Speaker 3: He was like, I was like, Jared, can you set
- 2:14Speaker 3: it up?
- 2:15Speaker 1: He had cutting board, eggs, everything, Like I was like, okay,
- 2:18Speaker 1: he knows what the and I was like, do we
- 2:20Speaker 1: need butter?
- 2:21Speaker 3: He's like, I got the oil. Yeah, Jar understands the
- 2:24Speaker 3: struggle to stay in my lane.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Ra absolutely, and then here pass me that cloth just
- 2:30Speaker 1: in case we accidently turn on the wrong burner.
- 2:33Speaker 2: We're good.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So take me back to this time in your life
- 2:38Speaker 1: when you were eating hot dogs and chickennout dogs and
- 2:42Speaker 1: the eggs and corn tortillas. By the way, this taping today,
- 2:47Speaker 1: all of my guests, all of their meals came to
- 2:49Speaker 1: twenty dollars combined. Why and that's with inflation. So I
- 2:53Speaker 1: know all the stories today I'm about to hear are amazing.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yes, take me back, Take me back.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Okay, So growing up, we moved around a lot. My
- 3:02Speaker 2: parents were divorcing, so basically my mother was trying to
- 3:06Speaker 2: we're basically staying with people that could house us, right,
- 3:10Speaker 2: So it went from Compton to Lynnwood to watts back
- 3:13Speaker 2: to Compton to Southgate, and she didn't have a lot
- 3:17Speaker 2: of money. And at the time, we grew up on
- 3:19Speaker 2: what people called food stamps.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Right, I remember few sands stamps.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You had the colorful ones right, the money right, Yes,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I wish they had the debit cards in our time,
- 3:29Speaker 1: by the.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Way, yeah, they didn't. We had to literally pull out
- 3:32Speaker 2: in front of everybody. Everybody in the county line would
- 3:34Speaker 2: give you dirty looks.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's how we grew up. And we were
- 3:39Speaker 2: just really really poor at that moment. I remember I
- 3:44Speaker 2: just told your story off camera where uh you know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: my mom would buy us vans every beginning of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: school year, and we were growing up fast, and at
- 3:53Speaker 2: one point we're like, Mom, they don't fit us anymore.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And she had no money until the next paycheck. So
- 3:58Speaker 2: what she did was she put vasoline on our feet
- 4:01Speaker 2: and shoved our feet in there and made it work
- 4:04Speaker 2: for like a week and a half until she got paid. Wow,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and then she went ahead. But she did what she
- 4:08Speaker 2: could do because it was just us. And the one
- 4:10Speaker 2: thing that I love about my mother is that she
- 4:13Speaker 2: raised us. Like even when me and my sister would argue,
- 4:15Speaker 2: She's like, ah, stop, we all we got because when
- 4:19Speaker 2: I'm gone, she's gonna be the only person that's gonna
- 4:21Speaker 2: have you. So we just really grew up with love
- 4:24Speaker 2: in our household. And we listen, I'm cutting this up
- 4:26Speaker 2: into triangles.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Okay, by the way, yeah, I was not expecting that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So I'm about to learn a good hack from my
- 4:33Speaker 1: own personal I think that's more than enough.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Okay, So I was just gonna say, well, I'm gonna
- 4:38Speaker 2: cook for Jared too.
- 4:39Speaker 3: He had this when growing up.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Just so you know, we always throw food back to
- 4:43Speaker 1: Jared off camera.
- 4:45Speaker 3: The second is Jared, you want to eat something, but yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 3: you need to turn it up.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna turn it up. We're good.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So are these gonna end up coming out like tortilla chiphina?
- 4:55Speaker 2: But then what you do is that they're like tortilla chips.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Then we're gonna end a little bit of the hot dog,
- 4:59Speaker 2: and then we're at the egg over it.
- 5:01Speaker 3: It's going to be so good.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yes, show me a good morning hack, because when I
- 5:06Speaker 1: say I'm running out the door, I never know what
- 5:08Speaker 1: to make.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But this looks like a good.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Super easy, super easy. I'm just waiting for the oil
- 5:12Speaker 2: to get hot, so I'm just tensing it right now,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but super easy. My mom made this for us all
- 5:18Speaker 2: the time growing up. And it's crazy because now that
- 5:21Speaker 2: you know, I consider myself a successful radio person. I
- 5:24Speaker 2: view twenty years, twenty years, twenty years, I've been doing
- 5:27Speaker 2: it and I still creep this.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Oh so you still eat it?
- 5:31Speaker 2: I still eat it? Yes, I could eat botsa nova
- 5:34Speaker 2: and I could eat this like it doesn't bother me
- 5:36Speaker 2: at all. Yes, yeah, it's getting hotter. We're working this out.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But you know what, Colleen, I never growing up struggling.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I never felt sorry for myself. I honestly thought everybody
- 5:47Speaker 2: grew up like that.
- 5:48Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:49Speaker 2: We used to go shopping at the second hand and
- 5:51Speaker 2: in Spanish we call it the segunda, so my family
- 5:54Speaker 2: shortened it and called it the Gundi. It was like
- 5:56Speaker 2: a cute little name. So they'd be like, oh, we're
- 5:58Speaker 2: going to go to the Gundi. So when I would
- 5:59Speaker 2: go to school, I would be like, oh, you got
- 6:01Speaker 2: that at the Goondi. I thought everybody shop the way
- 6:04Speaker 2: we shop. I only started noting the no seeing the
- 6:07Speaker 2: difference when I was in the seventh grade. And then
- 6:10Speaker 2: I started getting teased for the way that I was dressed.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And then I noticed other than that, I was happy.
- 6:17Speaker 2: My mom was like, listen, as long as you guys
- 6:18Speaker 2: are fed, you got a roof over your head, and
- 6:20Speaker 2: you're happy, and you're healthy, and nobody's touching you or
- 6:22Speaker 2: anything harming, you're good.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah you know what I mean. So that's really how
- 6:27Speaker 3: was your father.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I'm just genuinely curious was your father, Like, did he
- 6:31Speaker 1: just disappear or.
- 6:33Speaker 2: No, my dad was in and out of prison. Okay,
- 6:35Speaker 2: So my dad and my mom are both from Compton
- 6:38Speaker 2: and they grew up in that lifestyle. It is what
- 6:41Speaker 2: it is. And my dad was gang banging and you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: drug dealing all that, and got caught up in that
- 6:48Speaker 2: life and it was did a lot of time like
- 6:51Speaker 2: it was either in to had to be wayside, you know.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, it's weird because
- 6:58Speaker 2: people are like, you grew up kind of well rounded.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And I said, well, yeah, you know what, I had
- 7:02Speaker 2: a father that wasn't afraid to say he loved me either.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He'd be like, I love you so much, baby, grad love.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I just knew my dad loved me, and I don't
- 7:10Speaker 2: know if it was just the God in me with
- 7:11Speaker 2: my mom, but I also realized my dad didn't have
- 7:15Speaker 2: a father figure, So my dad didn't know how to
- 7:17Speaker 2: be a dad. He didn't have a dad, He didn't
- 7:20Speaker 2: have a dad that raised him, so he didn't This
- 7:21Speaker 2: was all foreign to him. But my dad loved me
- 7:25Speaker 2: and always showed me, you know, whether he'd be out
- 7:27Speaker 2: on the streets for a couple of days, come home,
- 7:29Speaker 2: visit us, whatever, it was always full of love. You know.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I started, as I started growing up and developing into
- 7:36Speaker 2: a young women, I started noticing, like, Okay, you're out,
- 7:39Speaker 2: You're not with the You're not with us all the time,
- 7:41Speaker 2: you know. But I never held a grudge or anything
- 7:44Speaker 2: like that.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You didn't feel like you were and you didn't. And
- 7:47Speaker 1: this is again genuine curiosity. So when your father was
- 7:52Speaker 1: not when you started to realize that he wasn't always present,
- 7:55Speaker 1: did you ever compare like the way your mom loved
- 7:57Speaker 1: and the way he loved did you ever go through
- 7:59Speaker 1: it like.
- 8:00Speaker 2: You know what? No? I loved. I was always Daddy's
- 8:03Speaker 2: little girl, so I I growing up, I think I
- 8:09Speaker 2: was more towards my dad. And then once I started
- 8:12Speaker 2: developing into a young women, I started seeing my mom
- 8:14Speaker 2: was the one that was really making all the struggles
- 8:16Speaker 2: for her household. My mom was the one that was
- 8:18Speaker 2: always sacrificing. So I always still loved Dad because I'm
- 8:21Speaker 2: Daddy's I was Daddy's little girl. However, I became more
- 8:25Speaker 2: protective of my mother. I never nobody could ever speak
- 8:29Speaker 2: bad about her, although they didn't. She was an angel
- 8:32Speaker 2: but I never let anybody speA because I'm like, listen,
- 8:35Speaker 2: my mom has paid the bills. She's taking two care
- 8:37Speaker 2: taking care of two kids on her own, she's working
- 8:40Speaker 2: two jobs. My mom was a welder because it was
- 8:43Speaker 2: the only job she could have gotten at that time.
- 8:45Speaker 2: And I remember just saying, listen, Mom, you.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Whatever you need, we got you. We would clean the house.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It was a partnership on me and my mom would
- 8:55Speaker 2: be like, listen, miha, you're the oldest. I depend on
- 8:58Speaker 2: you the most. You have to help with the house.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You have to help me with your sister. We are
- 9:02Speaker 2: all we got. I love that and that was how
- 9:04Speaker 2: she raised us.
- 9:05Speaker 3: And she never talked bad about your dad either.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You know what's so crazy about that is that I
- 9:10Speaker 2: recently did an interview and it kind of went viral,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and it was surprising to me. My mom never talked
- 9:15Speaker 2: bad about my father, and people were shocked about it.
- 9:20Speaker 2: But my dad, in turn, never talked bad about my
- 9:22Speaker 2: mother because he'd be like, that's the mother of my children.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Regardless of what we got going on. She makes sure
- 9:28Speaker 2: that my girls are okay all the time, and they
- 9:30Speaker 2: got clothes and she was on their back. So my dad,
- 9:33Speaker 2: although they were divorced, was still protective of my mother,
- 9:37Speaker 2: which I thought was super cool. And my mom was like,
- 9:40Speaker 2: no matter what, that's your father. And sometimes when he
- 9:43Speaker 2: couldn't come to see us, she would drop us off
- 9:45Speaker 2: so we could visit him. And people would be like, Oh,
- 9:47Speaker 2: you need a hive for chand support. You need to
- 9:49Speaker 2: get in for this, and She's like, my kids, all
- 9:51Speaker 2: they know is they need their dad in their life.
- 9:53Speaker 2: That's all they know. That's all they care about. They
- 9:55Speaker 2: don't know bills, they don't know this, they don't they
- 9:57Speaker 2: know their dad. So I need my daughters to have
- 10:00Speaker 2: a father figure in their life. They need to understand,
- 10:03Speaker 2: you know what I mean, how a man is supposed
- 10:05Speaker 2: to treat them. And so it worked out and they weren't.
- 10:08Speaker 2: They weren't bitter or anything. It just I think I
- 10:11Speaker 2: was blessed in that sense. But I feel good because
- 10:15Speaker 2: that's me and my sister grew up with. You know, listen,
- 10:18Speaker 2: daddy was out there in the streets. Daddy's doing what
- 10:20Speaker 2: he does. But you know what, he loves us, not
- 10:23Speaker 2: gonna change. I'm just gonna love him.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's unconditional love. Yes, Now, when did we're
- 10:31Speaker 1: gonna start inching towards who you became the first twenty
- 10:35Speaker 1: the first half of your twenty years. How did you
- 10:38Speaker 1: start getting into radio?
- 10:39Speaker 3: How did you?
- 10:40Speaker 1: What inspired that that point of I'm interested in this field,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know what.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I was working in television, and I was working in
- 10:52Speaker 2: television and I had said something about being in the
- 10:55Speaker 2: IE at the time, and there was a radio station
- 10:58Speaker 2: that was developing and they hired me through a message
- 11:03Speaker 2: on the phone. It was crazy. So I went and
- 11:06Speaker 2: I was like, well, if I can do TV, I
- 11:08Speaker 2: can do radio. No wrong. You have to understand that
- 11:12Speaker 2: when you do television, even when you change your facial
- 11:15Speaker 2: expression this, it says a lot. In radio, we have
- 11:19Speaker 2: to amplify. We have to get excited and talk like
- 11:22Speaker 2: this and get you to understand what we're doing. So
- 11:25Speaker 2: the first couple of weeks I couldn't do that, and
- 11:27Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, this ain't for me at all.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And what were you doing in TV before you were
- 11:34Speaker 1: hosting at LA TV? So LA you said hosting is
- 11:36Speaker 1: different from radio because hosting you don't have to do
- 11:38Speaker 1: as much amplification.
- 11:40Speaker 2: No, because it's a lot facial expression. So I'm talking
- 11:42Speaker 2: like this and you're watching me, but when you're listening
- 11:46Speaker 2: on the radio, you can't see me. You have to
- 11:49Speaker 2: feel my expression. So it was hard. And I gave
- 11:53Speaker 2: my three weeks or my two week notice, my third
- 11:57Speaker 2: week in radio twenty years ago, and God bless my
- 12:01Speaker 2: program director at the time. He said, see, see, if
- 12:03Speaker 2: I didn't think you could do this, I wouldn't have
- 12:05Speaker 2: hired you. Give it six months. If you feel the
- 12:09Speaker 2: same in six months, I will accept your resignation letter.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And I said, okay, fair enough. It's been twenty years.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Wow, yes, and I love it.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And and the more that I learned and I grew
- 12:20Speaker 2: and and I understood you know what I mean that
- 12:23Speaker 2: I had.
- 12:23Speaker 3: To Did you end up getting mentors in the game.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Or yes, I did. I had a mentors. I had
- 12:29Speaker 2: a mentor named Chris Lops that actually came from a
- 12:31Speaker 2: station back in the day called The Beat. Ok yeah,
- 12:34Speaker 2: ninety two point three The Beat, no color lines. He
- 12:36Speaker 2: was there, I'm gonna put this right here because that
- 12:38Speaker 2: is what people do when they broke.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And uh, he would, uh this looks legit, by the way, guys,
- 12:46Speaker 1: it's like little tortilla or anything. Yeah, I'm gonna stay
- 12:52Speaker 1: out of your kitchen.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, don't you worry, girl, You're gonna love this.
- 12:57Speaker 1: So so you you're you end up saying in radio
- 13:01Speaker 1: you did get mentors that helped you.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Kind of in the game.
- 13:05Speaker 3: In the game, okay, And I.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Had mentors in the game, and I learned from them
- 13:11Speaker 2: and they taught me. And I even had the DJs, like,
- 13:15Speaker 2: because I was a radio personality, it was kind of
- 13:18Speaker 2: cool to learn from DJs because when you're on the
- 13:23Speaker 2: radio and you're talking, you have a screen and it's
- 13:26Speaker 2: the countdown of the music and what's coming up next.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I was so focused on that and being perfect and
- 13:31Speaker 2: hitting every break. I remember a DJ came in the
- 13:33Speaker 2: studio put tape over the screen and said and I
- 13:36Speaker 2: was like, what are you doing. That's my countdown when
- 13:37Speaker 2: I'm talking on air right now. And he was like,
- 13:39Speaker 2: you don't need that. You go to the club. You
- 13:41Speaker 2: know hip hop, you know music. Listen to the beat,
- 13:44Speaker 2: listen to the beat. See, you need to start thinking
- 13:46Speaker 2: like a DJ.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And I was like, oh, I'm not a DJ.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I killed it and I started learning like that, and
- 13:51Speaker 2: then once I started blending my boards and really excelling,
- 13:55Speaker 2: people were like, Wow, you're really good at blending your boards.
- 13:57Speaker 2: And I said, because I learned from a DJ, and
- 13:59Speaker 2: shut up to that DJ, mister Swift, because he really
- 14:03Speaker 2: helped me focus and and showed me how to be
- 14:07Speaker 2: a better radio personality. So I did have a couple
- 14:10Speaker 2: of mentors. Adrian Scott, who does all the concerts in
- 14:13Speaker 2: Los Angeles. You see how the Wess won Crush Group.
- 14:17Speaker 2: He was a radio personality program direct for a long time.
- 14:20Speaker 2: He taught me a lot about my worst and also too.
- 14:25Speaker 1: He talked you a lot about your worth, yes, like
- 14:28Speaker 1: on a professional level or on.
- 14:30Speaker 2: A professional level, or like a professional level, he was like,
- 14:34Speaker 2: ask for this, always be about your money, get your money,
- 14:36Speaker 2: know your wor sy like you know you know how
- 14:39Speaker 2: to do this. Like he never cut me any slack,
- 14:41Speaker 2: And a lot of times I thought he was hard
- 14:43Speaker 2: on me, but he was hard on me because he
- 14:45Speaker 2: saw the potential in me. So once I started accepting
- 14:49Speaker 2: the constructive criticism and writing with it, I just became
- 14:52Speaker 2: this beast and I and then I worked for Jennifer
- 14:55Speaker 2: Lopez and that was something in itself, and I did
- 15:00Speaker 2: Collective on newbou TV at the time, and my first
- 15:05Speaker 2: check that Jlo gave me for interviewing. I thought it
- 15:08Speaker 2: was a mistake and I remember I was like, oh shit.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So I remember asked somebody else. I was like, hey,
- 15:14Speaker 2: is this about right? They got paid. They're like, yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 2: that's what you get paid. And I was like, oh
- 15:19Speaker 2: my god. And I remember her sister, Lindelopez was like
- 15:22Speaker 2: to say, this is what you're worst. I was in
- 15:24Speaker 2: a dressing room. It was huge. I had makeup person,
- 15:29Speaker 2: hair person, stylists, pa, a runner, and I'm like, all
- 15:34Speaker 2: this for me. You got to remember I grew up
- 15:35Speaker 2: in a trailer. I lived in a trailer in watts
- 15:37Speaker 2: We grew up in Compton. Look at what I'm making.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So I'm like, I don't need all this. Like I
- 15:41Speaker 2: could do my own hair, I could do my own
- 15:43Speaker 2: make up, I do my own shop because it's what
- 15:44Speaker 2: we have to do. And they're like, no, no, no, no,
- 15:47Speaker 2: you're the talent. This is how you're supposed to be treated.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And once I accepted that, I think it was the
- 15:54Speaker 2: imposter syndrome. I don't belong here. You know, I grew
- 15:58Speaker 2: up like this. I don't belong here.
- 16:01Speaker 3: And also I'm just backtracking.
- 16:03Speaker 1: When you got the JLO gig, where you also kind
- 16:05Speaker 1: of like in that position of.
- 16:08Speaker 3: H like I'm so thankful to be in the room
- 16:11Speaker 3: kind of.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yes, okay, I went okay, so like, oh, this is
- 16:14Speaker 1: Jalo soul, like so yeah, this is.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Jayloh the most beautiful woman on the planet.
- 16:18Speaker 3: So and just a sidebar, is she as beautiful as
- 16:21Speaker 3: she is?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yes?
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So I start really quick about Jennifer is that you
- 16:25Speaker 2: see all these little memes on Instagram and it's like
- 16:27Speaker 2: this like wrinkled looking face that is all like people
- 16:31Speaker 2: that do that editing because I went to her house.
- 16:33Speaker 2: She invited us for barbecue. I was working for at
- 16:36Speaker 2: the time, and I remember sitting down and I was
- 16:38Speaker 2: just like, oh my god, and I was taking my
- 16:40Speaker 2: moment of man, this is where I grew up super poor,
- 16:44Speaker 2: my mom putting vasilaine on my shoes feet so I
- 16:46Speaker 2: can fit into shoes. And I'm sitting with like the
- 16:49Speaker 2: number one international artist in the world, right like Jennifer Lopez.
- 16:53Speaker 2: She comes to me, she sits down and she's like,
- 16:55Speaker 2: are you good, CC, do you need anything? Did you
- 16:57Speaker 2: get yourself a plate to eat? Like, you know, because
- 16:59Speaker 2: it's a barbecue. And I remember looking at her like
- 17:01Speaker 2: I'm looking at you, and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 17:04Speaker 2: she's so perfect.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Oh my god, money but money can buy.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Like it's just like I was like, I bet you
- 17:12Speaker 2: she's using the best lotions, the best serum. But she
- 17:15Speaker 2: was just so flawless.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Really, but she was.
- 17:19Speaker 1: She was hospitable, it sounds like very hospitable, but also too,
- 17:22Speaker 1: she very healthy really.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Yeah, she doesn't hear alcohol, right, nope. And I was.
- 17:28Speaker 2: There somebody was trying to smoke a cigarette on her
- 17:31Speaker 2: property and she made them walk across the street because
- 17:33Speaker 2: she said no smoking at her house. So yeah, so
- 17:35Speaker 2: she didn't play. But when I got hired there, I
- 17:38Speaker 2: mean listening, you see what I'm eating, right, So, so
- 17:40Speaker 2: what we grew up on. When I got hired there,
- 17:43Speaker 2: I was the chubbiest girl and all the girls were
- 17:48Speaker 2: like this skinny and freaking gorgeous, right, And I remember
- 17:51Speaker 2: going like on this day, trying to lose weight, trying
- 17:53Speaker 2: to lose weight, and I remember they pulled me aside
- 17:55Speaker 2: and lindelp was.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Like, what are you doing?
- 17:57Speaker 2: And I was like, oh girl, I'm losing weight. Thank
- 18:00Speaker 2: thank you for hiring me. I'm gonna be the best
- 18:01Speaker 2: for you. I'm making sure I'm good, and they're like, no, no, no,
- 18:04Speaker 2: we hired you because the way you look like you're talented.
- 18:07Speaker 2: But the way you look, there's more people that look
- 18:10Speaker 2: like you than like them. Yeah, you have to understand that.
- 18:13Speaker 2: And I didn't understand it at the time. And then
- 18:15Speaker 2: I just learned to embrace the curves.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yeah you know what I mean. And you got a
- 18:18Speaker 3: nice body, by the way, thank you.
- 18:20Speaker 2: So I just embraced the curves with a little bit
- 18:23Speaker 2: of meat on them because we do love to eat.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It looks so good.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Girl.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Is the trick now? So now, this is the first
- 18:30Speaker 3: time I've ever seen someone do this in front of me.
- 18:32Speaker 3: So the trick isn't to put a lot of oil.
- 18:34Speaker 3: It's a little bit. Yeah, okay, it's a.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Little bit because you're gonna put the eggs in something
- 18:39Speaker 2: and you don't want it to be too oily, so
- 18:41Speaker 2: the tortillas will like basically soak it up and fry it. Okay,
- 18:44Speaker 2: So that's what I'm doing right now. So what I'm
- 18:46Speaker 2: doing is letting it fry a little bit more so
- 18:48Speaker 2: it can soak up more of that oil and then
- 18:50Speaker 2: when I put the eggs, we're fine. But I did
- 18:52Speaker 2: put a little bit of oil.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I love. I know it's a good lesson because I'm
- 18:55Speaker 3: gonna go home and do this.
- 18:56Speaker 2: It's so good. It's so inexpensive.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Yes, and I literally like when I'm surprised you didn't
- 19:04Speaker 1: add cheese or something, no, because we.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Didn't have it, Like this is what we had, and
- 19:09Speaker 2: of course we had some topatio, but we can, you know.
- 19:12Speaker 2: And then people like think, um, crazy because I'll even
- 19:15Speaker 2: put ketchup on this.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Oh really I.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Like it.
- 19:19Speaker 1: No, you know what, when Jara switches the cameras, he'll
- 19:22Speaker 1: probably bless us with some ketchup.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I needed, and then we'll just add the egg over it.
- 19:28Speaker 3: H wow, here that this is crazy. I'm learning so
- 19:34Speaker 3: many hacks.
- 19:35Speaker 1: If you're a single mom or a mom at home,
- 19:37Speaker 1: these are like the best moments because you could like
- 19:40Speaker 1: learn a quick hack.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's is home today.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yes, it's like a little crunch and then you get
- 19:46Speaker 2: your little meat in there protein and we did the
- 19:49Speaker 2: chicken so it's not pork, and then that's it. And
- 19:54Speaker 2: then when we did have cheese, we would do a
- 19:55Speaker 2: little bit of cheese and then most of the time
- 19:57Speaker 2: we would have like you know, green salasa or we
- 20:03Speaker 2: call it salata or we'll have like the thapathio and
- 20:05Speaker 2: we would just pour it on there and that was it.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Sometimes though I was the only one of my family
- 20:09Speaker 2: that would put ketchup and people make fun of me,
- 20:11Speaker 2: but I loved it. But yeah, this was my broke
- 20:13Speaker 2: meal that got me through like every place I've been to,
- 20:17Speaker 2: Like I moved to Face to do radio. I did
- 20:19Speaker 2: radio out there for five years.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And this was my go to mel because single at
- 20:24Speaker 2: the time, I had a studio apartment. I just moved
- 20:27Speaker 2: to this new city and I was struggling and this
- 20:31Speaker 2: was everything. And it's crazy because you know what the
- 20:35Speaker 2: trick is too or onion powder.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I'm telling you, Jared knew what he was doing because
- 20:41Speaker 1: I promised you he laid out all those seasonings and
- 20:44Speaker 1: I was like, it wasn't even on your call shee no, yes,
- 20:48Speaker 1: And right.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Now, like even when I was looking, I was like,
- 20:50Speaker 2: oh my god, I forgot to tell him that onion powder. Nah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: He he blessed you. So what happened with the Jalo situation.
- 21:08Speaker 2: The network went out of business and then I just
- 21:11Speaker 2: continue to do radio because I was doing both at
- 21:13Speaker 2: the time, and I went.
- 21:15Speaker 3: From how did you take that blown?
- 21:18Speaker 2: It was hard, but it wasn't. I wasn't the only
- 21:21Speaker 2: one affected. So we had We were at Neuveau TV
- 21:24Speaker 2: and that was Jalo's but at the time there was
- 21:26Speaker 2: a bid for Fuse TV, so she bought that.
- 21:30Speaker 3: But she bought that.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yes, so there was JAILO did ye okay?
- 21:39Speaker 3: Boss?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yes? And I don't know how much percentage.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I just know there was.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I just know we got talked to and we were like,
- 21:47Speaker 2: so they're trying to figure it out because Neuvau was
- 21:50Speaker 2: in the West coast, Fuse was in the east coast,
- 21:53Speaker 2: so they were saying that she was going to somehow
- 21:55Speaker 2: try to take a She's gonna have to let go
- 21:58Speaker 2: half here half theresolidated, and so we didn't know what
- 22:02Speaker 2: was going on, but at the time they were just
- 22:05Speaker 2: they said they placed the show on hold but never
- 22:06Speaker 2: came back, So which was fine because radio was my
- 22:11Speaker 2: love and I loved it, and honestly, like I took
- 22:14Speaker 2: that as a lesson working with Jlo. She taught me
- 22:16Speaker 2: a lot and I was able to walk away with
- 22:19Speaker 2: what I figured with my work, and it showed me
- 22:21Speaker 2: how to negotiate and how to move through the industry.
- 22:22Speaker 2: So it was a big blessing and then I got
- 22:25Speaker 2: a lot of gigs after that, you know what I mean.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So I loved it and I loved working for her.
- 22:30Speaker 2: She was awesome. She was never rude to me or anything.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Now people will say, well, she wasn't rude. She wasn't
- 22:37Speaker 2: like in Spanish we was saying like gon Gardino, like
- 22:41Speaker 2: you know, oh, I'm showing you everything, would love like
- 22:43Speaker 2: hey girl, and I hugguess not like that. It was
- 22:45Speaker 2: more like she was very like a polite she wanted
- 22:49Speaker 2: to make sure you were good. But it wasn't like
- 22:51Speaker 2: I'm very loving and it wasn't that. But I could
- 22:52Speaker 2: only imagine she's probably been in the industry for so
- 22:55Speaker 2: long and been around so many people, she has to
- 22:57Speaker 2: be protective of herself. So I wasn't anything like that personal. Okay, yeah,
- 23:01Speaker 2: I don't take anything really personal. Yeah, but yeah, So
- 23:06Speaker 2: it was like but it was cool because I'm like,
- 23:08Speaker 2: oh my god, Like I literally I remember living in
- 23:12Speaker 2: a trailer in watts and we had to go to
- 23:14Speaker 2: the bathroom. It was just a shell and we had
- 23:16Speaker 2: to go to the bathroom because we're parked in front
- 23:18Speaker 2: of somebody's house. So my mom was like, you have
- 23:20Speaker 2: to go to the bathroom before they go to bed
- 23:22Speaker 2: because you're not going to be able to use the
- 23:23Speaker 2: restroom till they wake up.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Oh, you mean you'd have to leave the house to
- 23:26Speaker 3: go to their house, leave.
- 23:27Speaker 2: The trailer and going there because our trailer was in
- 23:29Speaker 2: front in the front yard. Wa.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Wow.
- 23:31Speaker 2: And so it was Office of Moor and Watts. Our
- 23:33Speaker 2: trailer was in front yard. And so my mom understood
- 23:36Speaker 2: they were doing us a favor by letting us live there.
- 23:38Speaker 2: So she was very always conscious about not disturbing them.
- 23:43Speaker 2: So you go to the bathroom before they go to bed,
- 23:45Speaker 2: and you don't get to use the restroom till they
- 23:46Speaker 2: wake up because our camper was just a shell. It
- 23:49Speaker 2: was not anything working in there. Wow. And so that's
- 23:51Speaker 2: what we had to do.
- 23:53Speaker 1: And then to go like, look at your life fast forward.
- 23:56Speaker 1: That's got to be an incredible journey. How did your
- 23:58Speaker 1: mom feel seeing all that growth?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Comfortable?
- 24:01Speaker 2: Well, she wasn't. She didn't understand it. She like my
- 24:05Speaker 2: mom was had us when Chad me when she was sixteen,
- 24:08Speaker 2: my sister when she was seventeen. You know, they're from Compton.
- 24:11Speaker 2: She was just trying to survive. So I remember being
- 24:15Speaker 2: at the house and she was on the phone with
- 24:17Speaker 2: my aunt and she was like, oh, my poor baby,
- 24:20Speaker 2: because I'm in radio at this time. She's like, she's
- 24:22Speaker 2: trying to find herself. She don't, she don't trying to
- 24:24Speaker 2: and I'm like, and I'm listening. I tell my siter,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I'm like, I know who I am, but I'm doing
- 24:29Speaker 2: a different career path that my mom has ever imagined.
- 24:31Speaker 3: She's all, welldre she's a hard work Yeah, she goes
- 24:33Speaker 3: from a different time.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Right, And all she wants is for me to have
- 24:37Speaker 2: health insurance, dental insurance, vision coverage, four one K plan.
- 24:41Speaker 2: To her, that's successful. Yeah, And to me, I wanted
- 24:45Speaker 2: to really be who I was. So I just you know,
- 24:50Speaker 2: I had to accept it, and I had to. And
- 24:52Speaker 2: I remember my sister was there for me, and my
- 24:54Speaker 2: sister was like, she doesn't understand it, but it's okay, sister,
- 24:57Speaker 2: keep going. My sister is like, has went back all
- 24:59Speaker 2: the time time, and I was like, okay. And then
- 25:03Speaker 2: once I started climbing and making real money and big
- 25:06Speaker 2: money and she started seeing the fruits of my labor
- 25:08Speaker 2: actually coming together, then it changed from oh, my poor
- 25:11Speaker 2: baby's trying to find herself too, Like, give me some
- 25:14Speaker 2: shirts I could pass out to everybody on the radio.
- 25:17Speaker 2: They're gonna listen to you, baby, I've been telling everybody
- 25:20Speaker 2: she goes. She well, she used to because she's had
- 25:22Speaker 2: strokes now, but she used to go to the ninety
- 25:24Speaker 2: ninety cent store. She would shop all the time. There
- 25:26Speaker 2: would be like ma, and she would be like, oh.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I went to the ninety nine cent store and I
- 25:33Speaker 2: told the manager that my daughter's on the radio and
- 25:36Speaker 2: he likes your radio stations, So give me a shirt
- 25:38Speaker 2: I could give to him, because this is how you
- 25:39Speaker 2: get your listeners.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I said, okay, Mom, go ahead, like go from one
- 25:45Speaker 1: to the other extreme.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yes, wait, hold on, I gotta save some for Jared.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, let's save him a little spec And I'm Jared's
- 25:54Speaker 1: gonna love this.
- 25:55Speaker 2: There we go, save you some, Jared.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Can you bring us some kedget ye, Jared to do
- 26:00Speaker 3: that to you.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Let's try this. Oh my god, I like it.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I'm definitely gonna like it.
- 26:11Speaker 2: She loved it.
- 26:14Speaker 3: I'll give you my word. I will be doing this
- 26:17Speaker 3: from my daughter at home.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I love it.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I'll give me my word.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Isn't it easy?
- 26:22Speaker 3: It's easy and it's so creative.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and I didn't. I put pepper and I put onion.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Some people can put seasoning and salt, but I don't
- 26:30Speaker 2: put it a lot because I don't know what people like.
- 26:32Speaker 2: But this is how I made mine, and literally, this
- 26:35Speaker 2: right here would get me through so many mornings and
- 26:40Speaker 2: people that even my friends, I'd be like, hey, do
- 26:41Speaker 2: you mind if I make this real quick? They loved it.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Let me join you.
- 26:44Speaker 1: If I was your homegirl and I slide through, everyone
- 26:49Speaker 1: always has that one home girl like a cooke, real good,
- 26:52Speaker 1: you know what I'm talking about. If I was your homegirl,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I'd be like, girl, I'm coming through, can you make
- 26:56Speaker 1: that a tortilla egg?
- 26:58Speaker 3: And you'd be like, why don't have the green? I
- 27:00Speaker 3: got it, don't worry. I'll pick it up so good.
- 27:04Speaker 3: And then.
- 27:07Speaker 2: If you want to get a little fancy, sometimes I'll
- 27:11Speaker 2: do slice avocado on the side and then you eat
- 27:13Speaker 2: it like that. That's a little fancy.
- 27:16Speaker 1: You know what I like about this is it's different
- 27:20Speaker 1: from your average but back crunch, right, it's the crunch.
- 27:23Speaker 3: It's the crunch. It's a crunch. I don't care what
- 27:26Speaker 3: you put on this it's that crunch with.
- 27:28Speaker 2: The cruntry really does it.
- 27:32Speaker 1: So if your back because on the show, I'm really
- 27:34Speaker 1: supposed to be tasting, but everyone once we got a
- 27:36Speaker 1: dish is so good.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I love it.
- 27:40Speaker 3: I'm trying to take a step. Che can continue hearing
- 27:43Speaker 3: your story?
- 27:44Speaker 2: No, you're good. But yeah, so my mom I would
- 27:48Speaker 2: cook because my mom would have us cook, and these
- 27:51Speaker 2: are the dishes that she would have us make. And
- 27:54Speaker 2: from time to time, like like I said, we would
- 27:56Speaker 2: take my mom out and we'll be like, Mom, where
- 27:58Speaker 2: do you want to go? We'll take you to any restaurant.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Me and my sister loves spoiling her because she struggled
- 28:02Speaker 2: so much and we're very successful now, and but she doesn't.
- 28:08Speaker 2: She's so simple, and I think that's beauty in her
- 28:10Speaker 2: that she still craves these dishes. She has me making
- 28:13Speaker 2: her every morning and a lot of yours will know this.
- 28:16Speaker 2: She has me making her avenna and I was going
- 28:18Speaker 2: to have you make get that. So basically avena.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Is literally.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Water, boil it, oat meal, put a little bit of
- 28:26Speaker 2: milk in there, brown sugar no I'm sorry, cinnamon and sugar,
- 28:31Speaker 2: and we mix it and then we would get like
- 28:34Speaker 2: bean burritos, beans tortillas, roll it, and then you have
- 28:37Speaker 2: your avenna with your bean burrito. That's how me and
- 28:41Speaker 2: my family loved it. And then my niece is growing
- 28:43Speaker 2: up now they like it with toasts, so they will
- 28:45Speaker 2: make them the toast with the avenna.
- 28:47Speaker 3: But it's like omeal, it's old milky.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's so good and.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It's almost like, yeah, I'm glad I got this. Yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 3: this is so good. This is good.
- 28:56Speaker 2: But yeah, I love that.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I love it.
- 29:01Speaker 3: So let's get closer up to where you are today.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Okay, what were some of the would you say, pivotal
- 29:10Speaker 1: moments between the j Lo gig and where you're at
- 29:13Speaker 1: today that kind of changed or re transitioned your trajectory
- 29:17Speaker 1: because I see j Loo bern j and having that
- 29:22Speaker 1: mentor really helped establish your worth in the industry and
- 29:26Speaker 1: kind of break you through the imposter syndrome. But now
- 29:29Speaker 1: that you established at worth, were there any points in
- 29:32Speaker 1: your career where you had to like almost backpedal or
- 29:35Speaker 1: renegotiate back to who you who, who you first envisioned
- 29:40Speaker 1: yourself for versus no one you're worth now.
- 29:44Speaker 2: No, I think my ride has been pretty smooth. I've
- 29:48Speaker 2: had some bumps, but I think one pivotal moment was
- 29:52Speaker 2: when I was actually looking to apply at a certain
- 29:56Speaker 2: radio station, and I really believed that I was the
- 30:02Speaker 2: perfect person. I grew up on that music. I loved it.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I knew all the artists they were playing. They were
- 30:10Speaker 2: looking for a Latina. I was like, oh, perfect, I
- 30:13Speaker 2: know everything. Yeah, I'm from here, born and raised. We're good.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I went to audition and I did my air, submitted
- 30:20Speaker 2: my air chick, met with the UH manager and everything
- 30:23Speaker 2: went good. Then I got a call from the guy
- 30:25Speaker 2: who recommended me, and he said, you know, Ceci, I
- 30:28Speaker 2: don't know how to say this. I'm not Hispanic, but
- 30:34Speaker 2: you're like, you're awesome, but I you know, it's not me.
- 30:37Speaker 2: But their vibe was that, and I just knew it.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And I said, they're looking for a brown girl, but
- 30:42Speaker 2: I'm too brown, and he said exactly. I said, you're
- 30:45Speaker 2: looking for a brown girl that acts white maybe or
- 30:49Speaker 2: has more white friends. And he's like, not my words,
- 30:52Speaker 2: but you know, basically that's what they were looking for.
- 30:55Speaker 2: So I didn't get the part. I wasn't upset, though.
- 30:57Speaker 2: I was fine with it because I love being the
- 31:00Speaker 2: brown girl, you know, what I mean, that's from southern
- 31:03Speaker 2: California that's moved around because I know there's a lot
- 31:06Speaker 2: of little girls like me. So I may not be
- 31:08Speaker 2: accepted in that that specific job, however, but as.
- 31:13Speaker 3: A radio personality, that's what they were looking for.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so weird. Sometimes in radio they'd be looking
- 31:18Speaker 2: for the weirdest shit. But that didn't bother me because,
- 31:23Speaker 2: like I said, there's a lot and I told him,
- 31:24Speaker 2: I said, I'm not offended. There's a lot of more
- 31:26Speaker 2: little girls that look like me, and I gotta stand
- 31:28Speaker 2: strong for them. I gotta stand strong for them. I
- 31:31Speaker 2: cannot fold. I gotta keep ten toes down. So if
- 31:33Speaker 2: that's if it wasn't for me, then that's okay, because
- 31:35Speaker 2: God didn't want me there. What for me is for me.
- 31:38Speaker 2: So that kind of went away, and that, you know,
- 31:43Speaker 2: and from what I hear, it's not doing too well.
- 31:45Speaker 2: But anyhow, now you know, and I'm at Kaye. Yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 2: I'm at KADA and KD is owned by Marillo Media,
- 31:53Speaker 2: which owns Powerwin No. Six A, Los Calle ninety three
- 31:56Speaker 2: to nine. So when Marillo bought Power and we moved
- 32:00Speaker 2: into the same building, they already had ideas of putting
- 32:02Speaker 2: me in onto Power one O six to help pull
- 32:05Speaker 2: in the draw in the community. So that's what I did.
- 32:08Speaker 2: I did my job. It was cool. However, I did
- 32:11Speaker 2: go back and I begged them to go and please
- 32:13Speaker 2: let me come back to KD because I loved being
- 32:15Speaker 2: at Power winto six and it was cool, like you know,
- 32:18Speaker 2: trying to get them read. My goal was to get
- 32:21Speaker 2: Power to be reattached to the community, and I think
- 32:23Speaker 2: I did that. But at the end of the day,
- 32:25Speaker 2: I still had to think about my brand and what
- 32:27Speaker 2: I wanted, and what I wanted was to be at
- 32:30Speaker 2: nine three five KD. My family's from La born and raised.
- 32:34Speaker 2: We grew up on fifteen eighty am, you know, so
- 32:37Speaker 2: I wanted to be attached to that station. I wanted
- 32:41Speaker 2: the Tupas and the Snoop Doggs and the Ice Cues
- 32:43Speaker 2: and the Nwa and the Nases and the Queen Latifa's.
- 32:45Speaker 2: That's what I wanted. I didn't really have too much
- 32:49Speaker 2: passion for, you know, to meet the new stuff at
- 32:51Speaker 2: the time.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Yeah, so I still like that.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's hard. I mean, there's some new artists that I
- 32:57Speaker 2: actually loved, but just there's nothing like that era, right, Yeah,
- 33:03Speaker 2: so I, you know, begged and begged and bagged, and
- 33:05Speaker 2: they finally were like, all right, we could bring it back,
- 33:07Speaker 2: you know. She she did what she did, and I
- 33:09Speaker 2: was like, just please, I love Cada, and they're like
- 33:10Speaker 2: all right. So I went back to kDa and I
- 33:13Speaker 2: did the morning show with Romeo dominated mornings, and then
- 33:18Speaker 2: pandemic hit and a lot of people were being furloughed,
- 33:21Speaker 2: and I remember a lot of radio personalities were getting
- 33:24Speaker 2: were able to work from home, but ours didn't allow us.
- 33:28Speaker 2: So I was really nervous. I remember at that time
- 33:31Speaker 2: when pandemic hit, we didn't know anything about COVID. You
- 33:34Speaker 2: just knew, like you were so scared. You just knew
- 33:36Speaker 2: if somebody got it, the probably died. Right.
- 33:38Speaker 3: That was like the beginnings.
- 33:39Speaker 2: So I remember sitting in my bed in the bedroom
- 33:42Speaker 2: and they were like, you have to come in if
- 33:43Speaker 2: you want to still get a paycheck. And I was
- 33:47Speaker 2: crying and my fiance walked in and I was like,
- 33:49Speaker 2: I don't know if I love radio enough to die
- 33:52Speaker 2: for it. And I was like, and That's where I'm
- 33:54Speaker 2: at in my life right now. And I never thought
- 33:55Speaker 2: i'd be here, but the station promised us protocols and
- 34:00Speaker 2: everything would be clean. So I ended up doing it,
- 34:03Speaker 2: and then they stretched me out from mornings to mid days,
- 34:07Speaker 2: so then I was on from five point thirty to
- 34:11Speaker 2: like two o'clock.
- 34:12Speaker 3: In the afternoon.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Also, what time do you have to go on when
- 34:14Speaker 1: it's five thirty? Do you go in at like four three?
- 34:17Speaker 4: No?
- 34:17Speaker 2: I go in at five only because I show prep
- 34:20Speaker 2: everything the night before or right in the mornings before
- 34:22Speaker 2: I get them.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I have my main stories, so you're up early. I
- 34:25Speaker 1: was always bedtime just random.
- 34:27Speaker 2: When I was doing mornings, my bedtime was between eight
- 34:29Speaker 2: and nine, and then I'd wake up at three o'clock
- 34:31Speaker 2: in the morning because we still had to get camera read.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:34Speaker 2: So yeah, I did it for what almost almost twenty years,
- 34:38Speaker 2: and then was doing mornings, and then when they stretched
- 34:43Speaker 2: me out to middays, then they started realizing, oh okay,
- 34:46Speaker 2: people are coming back out now pandemic is kind of over. Hey,
- 34:49Speaker 2: workforst has changed now. Like before you'd have the nine
- 34:52Speaker 2: to fivers and we were set schedules. Now because of pandemic,
- 34:55Speaker 2: some people are working from home, some people working in
- 34:57Speaker 2: the afternoons, some people are working at nights. Like the
- 34:59Speaker 2: whole time has changed. So then they separated me in
- 35:02Speaker 2: Rome and put me in the afternoons, and they're like,
- 35:05Speaker 2: we need your energy in the afternoons. It takes people
- 35:08Speaker 2: longer to get home from work than it does to
- 35:11Speaker 2: get to work. So I went in the afternoons dominated it.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I'm killing it. I mean, we just had talks about
- 35:19Speaker 2: my show ratings. I'm like out the freaking gate with it,
- 35:22Speaker 2: which is awesome. But what I love is that I
- 35:26Speaker 2: have a team around me, and I stress to them
- 35:29Speaker 2: the importance of being outside. And so people are like,
- 35:31Speaker 2: what's your secret? You know, your ratings are so good,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and your ratings have been good since the pandemic.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Like I've always hit what does never mean to be outside?
- 35:39Speaker 2: You got to be in the community. You got to
- 35:41Speaker 2: be doing these community events, you got to be at it,
- 35:45Speaker 2: you got to be at certain mixers because this industry,
- 35:48Speaker 2: if you're not outside, you can't get mad. They'll forget
- 35:52Speaker 2: about you if you're not at the top of their mind,
- 35:55Speaker 2: and you can't blame them. They're around the people that
- 35:59Speaker 2: they're seeing the mother and that that's what's coming to
- 36:01Speaker 2: their minds. So you have to be outside. And I
- 36:04Speaker 2: told people that I've said, you know, you can't run
- 36:06Speaker 2: a radio show from behind the console like I could
- 36:09Speaker 2: do this, but I also have to be outside too.
- 36:11Speaker 2: I also have to be advocating for my show for KJA,
- 36:15Speaker 2: especially nowadays because we got so much competition, you know
- 36:19Speaker 2: what I mean. So that's been my secret.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Is just but that's also what your mom was. Also.
- 36:24Speaker 2: My mom was about that.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Yes she was oh yeah ninety nine said store less.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And my mom was always about blessing other people, you know,
- 36:32Speaker 2: and that's what's her thing. We would be like, Mom,
- 36:34Speaker 2: we already have it, you're giving in and she's like,
- 36:35Speaker 2: they have it worse than us. They have it worse
- 36:38Speaker 2: than us. You need to stop thinking like that. Open
- 36:40Speaker 2: your heart. Like my mom has always been that way.
- 36:43Speaker 2: So I think that's where I come from. And people
- 36:45Speaker 2: are like, Cecie, you're always in the community, like you're
- 36:47Speaker 2: just and to me it's so natural that I'm like,
- 36:50Speaker 2: that's not a big thing. That's how you live your life,
- 36:53Speaker 2: you know. It's being outside, is being with them, is
- 36:55Speaker 2: doing these fundraisers. I did fundraisers for the street vendors.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Remember during the Pendic, they were getting beat up and
- 37:01Speaker 2: getting assaulted. Ye I did a food drive in November
- 37:05Speaker 2: for them, and I found out in doing this food drive.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Did you know that street vendors we couldn't get them
- 37:11Speaker 2: turkeys because they don't have refrigerators like you have a refrigerator.
- 37:15Speaker 2: There's street vendors they have sometimes they only have an
- 37:18Speaker 2: ice chest. Wow. Yes, So we had to get them
- 37:22Speaker 2: dry goods, and we had to give them gift cards
- 37:24Speaker 2: because they don't have the refrigerator space. And I remember
- 37:27Speaker 2: there was a street vendor she was eighty two or
- 37:30Speaker 2: eighty three years old, by the name of Daisy. We
- 37:32Speaker 2: dropped off the food to her house. She didn't have
- 37:35Speaker 2: no couch. She had an office chair and a TV
- 37:38Speaker 2: and that was how she sat and watched her television.
- 37:40Speaker 2: There was no couch. I mean, imagine being on your
- 37:42Speaker 2: feet all day and you don't get to rest. She
- 37:44Speaker 2: had one small refrigerator and like two three ice chests.
- 37:47Speaker 2: We sat there, talked to her for a couple hours,
- 37:50Speaker 2: you know, blessed her. And then when we were getting
- 37:53Speaker 2: up to leave us already after nine point thirty, she
- 37:55Speaker 2: gets up too, and I tell the girl that's working
- 37:57Speaker 2: with me, where's she going? And she goes, where are
- 37:59Speaker 2: you going? She said, why didn't make enough today? So
- 38:01Speaker 2: I have to go back outside and sell. Imagine your
- 38:04Speaker 2: eighty three year old grandmother being out at nine thirty
- 38:06Speaker 2: at night in la and having to sell because she
- 38:08Speaker 2: didn't make any money. And when we tried to get
- 38:10Speaker 2: the directions, she didn't know her address, so we had
- 38:14Speaker 2: to write it down, put on refrigerator and be like,
- 38:15Speaker 2: this is your address when people ask you. So there's
- 38:18Speaker 2: so much more in the community that goes through that.
- 38:20Speaker 2: And I remember sitting outside and I was bawling, and
- 38:23Speaker 2: I called my mom and I was like, it's not
- 38:25Speaker 2: fair that people live this way, Mom, it's not fair.
- 38:27Speaker 2: And she's like, I know, baby, but you know what,
- 38:30Speaker 2: God has blessed you, and you're blessing her. And that's
- 38:33Speaker 2: the only way that I have learned to keep my
- 38:35Speaker 2: sanity and all this. I adopted an orphanage in Tijuana,
- 38:40Speaker 2: and I did it because it was doable. It was
- 38:42Speaker 2: forty kids. So what we did was they made Christmas cars.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I would give you one, give Jared one, and you
- 38:49Speaker 2: would be be in charge of that kid and they
- 38:52Speaker 2: would tell you, hi, calling my What I like is
- 38:57Speaker 2: I like Baretts, But what I need is underwear, that's
- 39:02Speaker 2: all I Hey, I love soccer. I would love to
- 39:06Speaker 2: have a soccer ball, but what I need is t shirts.
- 39:10Speaker 2: So it's so crazy what their need was. And we
- 39:13Speaker 2: would go deliver it and I would just say, hey,
- 39:15Speaker 2: you just have to buy those two items, but decorate it,
- 39:17Speaker 2: wrap it up because we want to give them the
- 39:19Speaker 2: feeling of.
- 39:20Speaker 3: A kid a wrap a gift.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:22Speaker 3: So this is what I do, and.
- 39:24Speaker 2: This is how it's so important for me to still
- 39:27Speaker 2: be tapped in. I'm gonna be I'm trying to put
- 39:29Speaker 2: together a trunk or treat for kids for Halloween, but
- 39:32Speaker 2: we're doing it a step further. We're gonna have the
- 39:35Speaker 2: trunk or treat. Have you ever heard of that?
- 39:36Speaker 1: No?
- 39:36Speaker 2: Okay, So a lot of parents do because it's safe
- 39:39Speaker 2: trick or treating for the kids. Churches do it, schools
- 39:42Speaker 2: do it. So you get all these cars, they park
- 39:44Speaker 2: in a parking lot, they open up the trunk, they
- 39:45Speaker 2: decorate the trunk, and then the kids go around collect
- 39:48Speaker 2: a nice candy and it's just a safe way of
- 39:51Speaker 2: doing It's very controlled. But we're going to take it
- 39:54Speaker 2: a step further and we have a DJ and everything.
- 39:57Speaker 2: We're gonna do a sensory hour that our before for
- 40:00Speaker 2: kids that have special needs, kids that are autistic, the
- 40:03Speaker 2: music's too loud for them, it's too much. So we're
- 40:06Speaker 2: doing something so we can include all children.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Wow, where are you gonna do that at? I'm trying
- 40:10Speaker 3: to do it at the Solfie Stadium.
- 40:11Speaker 2: We're in talks right now.
- 40:13Speaker 3: So okay, yeah, so Fa so fas tough stadium. Yeah
- 40:16Speaker 3: so yeah, So I'm lying, I'm trying.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure you will be able to do it.
- 40:21Speaker 1: It sounds really wonderful.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yeah, And I just think that that's part of being outside,
- 40:25Speaker 2: that's part of being the community, and that is what's
- 40:27Speaker 2: carried me through twenty years of.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Radio and the where do you plan on going from here?
- 40:34Speaker 2: With the producing producing documentaries. I just did something. I
- 40:41Speaker 2: was in a documentary about Slim four hundred and you
- 40:43Speaker 2: rest in Piece a good friend of mine. And now
- 40:46Speaker 2: I'm working on something. I can't say the name of
- 40:49Speaker 2: the title, but it is gonna it's uh looking like
- 40:52Speaker 2: it'd be on Netflix or to b oh Nice has
- 40:54Speaker 2: to do a hip hop and then there's a huge
- 40:57Speaker 2: uh figure in La that does a lot of different events.
- 41:01Speaker 2: If I said him a lot of people would know him.
- 41:04Speaker 2: We're working and we've pitched him a documentary to do
- 41:07Speaker 2: on him. So what I want to do now that
- 41:09Speaker 2: I'm getting older is I still want to do radio, but.
- 41:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 41:17Speaker 2: I want to do more producing, more behind the scenes,
- 41:19Speaker 2: more developing. I want to tell stories now.
- 41:22Speaker 4: You know, well, you're a good story to thank you.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I'm curious because we are so tight on time. I'm
- 41:40Speaker 1: super sad about it though, because I feel like we
- 41:43Speaker 1: didn't get to come. No, we're good, but I'm genuinely
- 41:49Speaker 1: curious of any iconic moments in your career that you'd like,
- 41:53Speaker 1: were either shocked by or just we're like, you know what.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I think an iconic moment in my life was when
- 41:59Speaker 2: I was interviewing Bone Legs and Harmony.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And I love them. I love them, and.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Lazy Bone comes up to me. He's like, Cecie, come here,
- 42:08Speaker 2: I got something for you. And I was like, oh,
- 42:10Speaker 2: and I don't know why. I'm just like, oh, they
- 42:12Speaker 2: got me like either like a little and I don't drink,
- 42:14Speaker 2: but people will bring me bottles. I'm like, maybe they
- 42:15Speaker 2: got me a little bottle or something, right, No, they
- 42:19Speaker 2: gifted me a bone, a bone thugs and Harmony chain and.
- 42:23Speaker 1: I will the real what yes, oh hey, And I'm
- 42:27Speaker 1: like they're so nice and I'm.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Like lazy me and he goes, well why not, You've
- 42:32Speaker 2: been supporting us for twenty years, and I was like,
- 42:34Speaker 2: well why not. Let's do this so I'll wear you
- 42:37Speaker 2: guys will see I'll be worried it from time time.
- 42:39Speaker 2: And then when Snoop Dogg bought death Row records, they
- 42:43Speaker 2: came down and gifted me not one, not two, but
- 42:46Speaker 2: three death Row chains.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Yes Snoop or bone Snoop no Snoops yes people.
- 42:52Speaker 2: So they when Snoop bought death Row, because you know,
- 42:54Speaker 2: he bought death Row, so the guys that run it
- 42:56Speaker 2: came and he was like here you go. And I'm like, well,
- 42:58Speaker 2: my fiance also shoots for New Dog so he works
- 43:01Speaker 2: with him. So they but they came and gifted me
- 43:04Speaker 2: and I was like, oh my god.
- 43:05Speaker 3: And I remember me Romeo.
- 43:06Speaker 2: We're so excited and we're like, hey, are we the
- 43:08Speaker 2: only ones in radio that got this. It's just a
- 43:09Speaker 2: competitive of course, and they're like yeah, We're like yeah,
- 43:13Speaker 2: we're just excited. But those are moments where I'm like,
- 43:17Speaker 2: I just remember growing up listening to you guys I remember,
- 43:21Speaker 2: you know, and because I am Mexican from Compton, like
- 43:24Speaker 2: we grew up listening different music, Like I grew up
- 43:26Speaker 2: on Chaka Khan, the Ohio Players, Teddy Pendergrass, you know,
- 43:29Speaker 2: of course, the Ice Cubes, the Tupas, you know, the Whispers,
- 43:33Speaker 2: Tina Marie, like that was my whole playground of music.
- 43:37Speaker 2: And so it was just so surreal that I'm just like,
- 43:42Speaker 2: oh my god, Like these people I call them my friends, yeah,
- 43:46Speaker 2: and some good friends. And these are people I listened
- 43:48Speaker 2: to growing up, and.
- 43:49Speaker 3: I love that they value you back.
- 43:51Speaker 1: I think there's nothing more special than a two way relationship,
- 43:54Speaker 1: like the fact that they're thinking of yeah, ladies.
- 43:56Speaker 3: By the way, we had Lazy I love Lazy Bone.
- 44:00Speaker 1: The I call it the third best ramen on our
- 44:03Speaker 1: No he did like all the ROMs we've had, he
- 44:06Speaker 1: had the.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Was it the third or second best? I think he
- 44:09Speaker 3: was the second.
- 44:10Speaker 1: I know, you know, I think he may have been
- 44:12Speaker 1: the second best. He is the second best rama we've
- 44:14Speaker 1: ever had. And you want to know what he put
- 44:16Speaker 1: in his I think it was like a miracle whip
- 44:18Speaker 1: or mayonnaise in it.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I was tripping.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I was like, bro, you gotta stop adding these ingreenent.
- 44:22Speaker 1: It was like a spread type ramen.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 44:25Speaker 1: It was delicious though, but the only thing he messed
- 44:28Speaker 1: up with he put way too many peppers. But other
- 44:30Speaker 1: than that, it was by far the best ramen and
- 44:33Speaker 1: he had everything up in there. No watch that episode.
- 44:36Speaker 1: People are still talking about how he was throwing down.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Cool like what he does things? You know who also
- 44:42Speaker 2: can cook?
- 44:42Speaker 3: Warren g really, yes, he had Orang. We gotta get
- 44:46Speaker 3: him on here.
- 44:46Speaker 2: He has his barbecue sauce and then he also he
- 44:53Speaker 2: he cooks like the ribs and.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Really, what did you when you do for a long
- 44:56Speaker 3: time like slow cooker, I mean smoker smoker smoke.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Yess, yes, and they fall off the ribs so goodly.
- 45:06Speaker 3: And he has his own barbecue sauce. Yes.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Snip and Griffin's.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Interviewed anything with jay I love a good jay Z story.
- 45:13Speaker 1: You know what, I know you West Coast, but.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I know I don't. I haven't done anything with jay Z,
- 45:18Speaker 2: but I love jay Z. But I interviewed Rick Rock
- 45:22Speaker 2: and Rick Rock is a producer and he told me
- 45:24Speaker 2: a dope jay Z story where he went to the
- 45:27Speaker 2: East Coast. Jay Z had heard his beat and was like,
- 45:31Speaker 2: I like this kid, like come over and he's like,
- 45:33Speaker 2: oh yeah, jay Z flow to the East Coast. But
- 45:35Speaker 2: then once he had his beats, jay Z was like,
- 45:38Speaker 2: do you have anything else? Yeah? I don't like that anymore. No,
- 45:41Speaker 2: I don't like it. No, do you have any And
- 45:42Speaker 2: he was like, oh shit, and he showed him all
- 45:44Speaker 2: his beats and then he saw a keyboard in the
- 45:47Speaker 2: corner and he said, can I just play something? And
- 45:49Speaker 2: he said yeah, and he was just playing and then
- 45:51Speaker 2: he said that's it. I like it, and he was
- 45:53Speaker 2: like but he was like at some point it was
- 45:55Speaker 2: like okay, I'm running out of OX and I'm like,
- 45:58Speaker 2: oh my god, Like how crazy is that?
- 46:01Speaker 1: Imagine you get that far in the room and only
- 46:03Speaker 1: find out you get you know who?
- 46:05Speaker 2: Uh?
- 46:06Speaker 1: One of the kids that well he's grown now. So
- 46:09Speaker 1: that's James Andre Jefferson Junior. I don't know if you
- 46:12Speaker 1: know James, but I remember Trevor Knall was tracking him
- 46:16Speaker 1: or whatever and he like flew him out and he
- 46:18Speaker 1: really wanted to.
- 46:19Speaker 3: James did to make the cup. But I was like, damn,
- 46:22Speaker 3: you got so close. Yeah, sometimes it's just what it is.
- 46:25Speaker 2: But I think in this industry, the key is just consistency.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Just keep going, just keep going, just keep going, Just
- 46:31Speaker 2: keep doing it. You know, even if you fail that
- 46:34Speaker 2: first time, keep doing it again, keep doing it again,
- 46:36Speaker 2: because it'll grow, it'll get bigger, and people will, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 2: catch on to it and really support you. So I
- 46:43Speaker 2: think for me, I just as long as I don't stop,
- 46:46Speaker 2: and I never look back at my highlights, I don't.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Sometimes people got to ask me and I'll be like, oh, yeah,
- 46:52Speaker 2: the other day my assistant was like, oh, you interviewed
- 46:53Speaker 2: that person I said I did. I don't even remember, Like,
- 46:56Speaker 2: I don't really go back and look my highlight.
- 46:58Speaker 3: You don't think that's good to do.
- 46:59Speaker 2: I enjoy the moment really quick, but I have so
- 47:04Speaker 2: much more I want to do, so I will let
- 47:06Speaker 2: people tell me. You know what I mean, Oh you
- 47:08Speaker 2: did good, did all right? Perfect? You liked it?
- 47:10Speaker 3: Was it good to touch you? All right?
- 47:11Speaker 2: Bet? And then I go into the next because I
- 47:12Speaker 2: have more projects I have to do, so I never
- 47:15Speaker 2: look back at it. And then one thing I've never
- 47:18Speaker 2: done and I don't care. I stand by it. It
- 47:21Speaker 2: doesn't bother me. I have never ever watched myself on
- 47:24Speaker 2: television what never, Never, I don't. I will have my
- 47:31Speaker 2: friends watch me, and I.
- 47:33Speaker 3: Will says, your sister ever comment on your stuff?
- 47:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, souse, sisters be they Oh my see that's
- 47:38Speaker 2: the thing that my sister and sister you were the
- 47:42Speaker 2: amazing You're so great. Yeah. Yes, I take constructive criticism
- 47:46Speaker 2: for my friends, and I'm like, look, if there's something
- 47:48Speaker 2: that you think I could do better, please tell me.
- 47:50Speaker 2: You're my friend. I value it and I will listen.
- 47:52Speaker 2: But I can't watch myself because me I will beat
- 47:57Speaker 2: up myself. I will look at myself. I will tell
- 48:00Speaker 2: myself I could have worn this, I shouldn't have did
- 48:01Speaker 2: my hair like this. Why did I do my makeup
- 48:03Speaker 2: like that? I didn't blend very well? Oh my god,
- 48:05Speaker 2: I stuttered at this word. And I will depress myself.
- 48:07Speaker 1: It's so crazy because I was sitting here thinking before
- 48:10Speaker 1: you said that. I think one of the most beautiful
- 48:14Speaker 1: things about you is the embracing of you, Like, yeah,
- 48:17Speaker 1: embrace you. So to hear you say that is crazy
- 48:21Speaker 1: because on the outside, the way you handled your business,
- 48:24Speaker 1: it seems like you embrace you. But to hear that
- 48:26Speaker 1: there's this side of you, that there there yourself down
- 48:29Speaker 1: is crazy because I'm sitting here like, I love how
- 48:33Speaker 1: you love who you are and what you represent. Like
- 48:35Speaker 1: I think that if I were to walk away from
- 48:38Speaker 1: this whole interview, I'd say I love the way she
- 48:41Speaker 1: loves who she is, and and.
- 48:43Speaker 2: I do, and I think in those moments, I don't
- 48:45Speaker 2: want to take that away because like I'll be at
- 48:47Speaker 2: an event and I'll be so happy and I'll be
- 48:49Speaker 2: like we did good and I loved it and everything
- 48:51Speaker 2: came out good, and I'll see a video and the
- 48:54Speaker 2: video I'm leaning a little forward when I'm walking, so
- 48:56Speaker 2: it looks awkward and I'm like, why did I walk
- 48:58Speaker 2: like that?
- 48:59Speaker 3: So madam more like perist.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Yes, I'm such a perfectionist and so I I do
- 49:05Speaker 2: that to keep my own sanity and my sanity at
- 49:08Speaker 2: the house, so I don't watch anything. I will tell
- 49:11Speaker 2: I tell people that all the time. So I'm like,
- 49:13Speaker 2: what do you? And my friends always give me beautiful
- 49:15Speaker 2: constructive criticism, but they're like you're good. See they're good,
- 49:18Speaker 2: They're and they just say, I wish you would watch
- 49:20Speaker 2: yourself one time, and yeah, and I get I have anxiety,
- 49:26Speaker 2: like I'll get up. My mom has tried to make
- 49:28Speaker 2: me sit down and watch and she's like, baby, just
- 49:30Speaker 2: sit right here, just watch this real quick. And I'll
- 49:33Speaker 2: sit there and then I'll get up and I'll like
- 49:34Speaker 2: act like I'm making something because I need to be
- 49:36Speaker 2: out of the room because I am looking through a
- 49:38Speaker 2: different lens than my mother is. So those are that's
- 49:42Speaker 2: just my thing. But I'm a perfectionist. But at the
- 49:44Speaker 2: end of the day, I'm happy, like I I I
- 49:50Speaker 2: I don't know, I just I'm happy. But I think
- 49:55Speaker 2: that I'm also conscious of like other people around me,
- 50:00Speaker 2: and I don't know how I am perceived to them.
- 50:02Speaker 2: So I always want to be like extra loving or
- 50:05Speaker 2: you know. I always wanted to take time and speak
- 50:07Speaker 2: to people just because there was a time I met
- 50:11Speaker 2: somebody and they were like, oh, cec I met you
- 50:13Speaker 2: a couple times. I don't think you like me. And
- 50:15Speaker 2: I said, I don't even know you, what are you
- 50:17Speaker 2: talking about? And they're like, well, I wanted to take
- 50:19Speaker 2: a picture with you at a concert and I went
- 50:21Speaker 2: like this and you pushed my hand off you, and
- 50:24Speaker 2: I was like, oh my god. I was probably in
- 50:26Speaker 2: a moment where I was going through something and I
- 50:28Speaker 2: am some random guy and you touched me. I went like,
- 50:30Speaker 2: I'm so sorry, and I'm like, this happened two years ago.
- 50:35Speaker 2: You carried this with you for two years. You think
- 50:38Speaker 2: I don't even know you. What's your name? My name
- 50:40Speaker 2: is Cecil. Let me introduce myself properly. And that bothered
- 50:43Speaker 2: me because I felt bad and I was like, Wow,
- 50:46Speaker 2: somebody really walked around thinking that I didn't like them
- 50:49Speaker 2: when I was just in a moment and concert moments crazy.
- 50:52Speaker 2: I was in a moment and they must have touched
- 50:54Speaker 2: me and I didn't realize it and I pushed her hand.
- 50:56Speaker 2: So I try to stay conscious.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Look how approachable you are, though, because for the fact
- 51:01Speaker 1: that they can come up to you and say that
- 51:03Speaker 1: shows that probably they got they caught you when you
- 51:06Speaker 1: weren't a party at somebody's party, we were able to
- 51:10Speaker 1: talk to you about it. Yeah, I think you're a
- 51:12Speaker 1: real beautiful genuinely beautiful, like it's vibrating, very loud, one
- 51:19Speaker 1: of my favorite breakfast dishes on the show.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Yes by far, I hope we could stay in touch.
- 51:25Speaker 2: Yes, are you gonna make? You should make like a
- 51:27Speaker 2: like a recipe book with all this we are.
- 51:30Speaker 1: That's why I said, put to put your address very yeah,
- 51:33Speaker 1: because we want to send out an Eating while Broke cookbook.
- 51:36Speaker 1: It's so funny because I've talked to publishers about doing
- 51:38Speaker 1: the cookbook, and when I send over the ingredients of
- 51:41Speaker 1: all the celebrities, I mean, these are successful people, and
- 51:45Speaker 1: I'm like sending over their their dishes spam and egg
- 51:48Speaker 1: and cheese, and they're like, who's gonna buy this cookbook?
- 51:51Speaker 1: I'm like, bruh, you It's not just it's the stories
- 51:55Speaker 1: behind the cookbook. It's known that your favorite MC, your
- 51:59Speaker 1: favorite author, your favorite entrepreneur started at this point. And honestly,
- 52:05Speaker 1: most of these dishes these people still eat because now
- 52:08Speaker 1: it's become an iconic thing. I used to tell people
- 52:10Speaker 1: all the time, you don't you don't want to rush
- 52:13Speaker 1: past your brokeness because I look back at my broke
- 52:16Speaker 1: stories and I laugh and they bring me so much joy. Right,
- 52:20Speaker 1: And when I hear like the success stuff just doesn't
- 52:23Speaker 1: do it for me as much as like eating all,
- 52:25Speaker 1: you know, like just just my old stories. I still
- 52:27Speaker 1: joke about, like I used to search my car to
- 52:31Speaker 1: make a whole dollar to buy like a dollar make chicken.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Like I would be like, I.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Know, there's a quarter somewhere in this car, and I
- 52:37Speaker 1: just need one more quarter to buy this And I
- 52:40Speaker 1: joke about it now, but like those stories like make
- 52:44Speaker 1: me so happy and know like I came from this.
- 52:46Speaker 1: But this dish is absolutely affordable, easy to make.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I'm gonna be my daughter's gonna be eating this tomorrow,
- 52:53Speaker 3: probably for a long time.
- 52:55Speaker 1: And I love that being on this show, I'm learning
- 52:57Speaker 1: more and more on how to make tortillas work. Yes,
- 53:00Speaker 1: And then one last sidebar we are definitely over time
- 53:03Speaker 1: is how do the women DJs work with each other
- 53:08Speaker 1: behind the cameras. Are you guys supportive or you guys
- 53:10Speaker 1: hater ish? Like I'm genuinely curious both, because there's few,
- 53:14Speaker 1: there's only there's a very few of them.
- 53:16Speaker 3: There's very few. Mmm. Sorry, I know you got a mouthful.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Some are supportive and some are haters, like you just
- 53:23Speaker 2: have your you have both. You know, everybody's different. But
- 53:27Speaker 2: I think that with the people that have been in
- 53:30Speaker 2: radio for a very long time, where we like to
- 53:33Speaker 2: say like we're the vets, we're kind of like the ogs.
- 53:36Speaker 2: We're more supportive because we have more of an understanding
- 53:40Speaker 2: how crazy, how hurtful, how judgmental, this industry can be
- 53:45Speaker 2: so we have I want to say the girls that
- 53:47Speaker 2: have been in it longer have a better understanding and
- 53:50Speaker 2: support each other. I think the girls that are coming up,
- 53:52Speaker 2: they don't have that understanding yet because they haven't experienced
- 53:55Speaker 2: certain things. So I could be a little caddy, you know.
- 53:58Speaker 2: I think once they sty they learn though, and they
- 54:01Speaker 2: go through it, then they understand it. But I support myself.
- 54:04Speaker 2: I surround myself with a supportive network with girls that
- 54:07Speaker 2: have been in this business, whether they're promoters their concert
- 54:11Speaker 2: you know, concert throwers, or their producers, or their fashion
- 54:15Speaker 2: designers you know DJs. I support my I really have
- 54:19Speaker 2: a small circle, very tight, very loving, and very strong.
- 54:24Speaker 2: And that's how I move through the business. A lot
- 54:26Speaker 2: of people know me, and a lot of people see
- 54:28Speaker 2: she's so sweet. But you know what keeps me sweet
- 54:31Speaker 2: on their radar? I don't. I don't. I don't out well,
- 54:36Speaker 2: outwear my welcome. That's one thing I don't do.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Outwhear you're welcome.
- 54:40Speaker 2: You don't. I go to an event, I'm there. I
- 54:43Speaker 2: mingle everything. I'm out. I'm not involved in the what
- 54:46Speaker 2: we like to call it cheese man. I'm not involved
- 54:48Speaker 2: in gossip I'm not involved in no petty stuff.
- 54:51Speaker 3: I literally like, you do your time and your out
- 54:55Speaker 3: and I'm out.
- 54:55Speaker 2: That's it.
- 54:56Speaker 3: I make a classic yes clastic and.
- 54:59Speaker 2: I'm known for that. People like, oh Ce, she's in
- 55:00Speaker 2: and out, and I think that's that's why a lot
- 55:03Speaker 2: of artists like me too. Like when I go to events,
- 55:05Speaker 2: Snoop will do stuff at the compound. We go to events,
- 55:07Speaker 2: we don't outwear, are welcome. We're not the person that's
- 55:10Speaker 2: sitting there and you're like, dang, they've been here for
- 55:11Speaker 2: every they need to go home. Now why they're here?
- 55:13Speaker 2: You know those people like that.
- 55:14Speaker 1: You said you don't gossip because this is a very
- 55:16Speaker 1: click clacking industry, and you're right. If you stay too
- 55:19Speaker 1: long anywhere, gossip will be the conversation that comes up.
- 55:22Speaker 2: It does, it really does. So if you go in,
- 55:24Speaker 2: do your network, make sure you're seeing, take your pictures,
- 55:27Speaker 2: what's up, you know what I mean, be very happy.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Then we're out.
- 55:30Speaker 2: We're good. I give myself a two hour window for everything.
- 55:33Speaker 2: I'm like, we're gonna be there for maybe an hour
- 55:35Speaker 2: and a half, So it's like an hour and a
- 55:36Speaker 2: half to two hours, two hours. If I'm really enjoying
- 55:38Speaker 2: myself and then I'm out because I and I think
- 55:42Speaker 2: that's why I feel really in my heart, that's why
- 55:45Speaker 2: a lot of people have respect for me because I'm not.
- 55:48Speaker 2: I don't never get too close where we cross that
- 55:51Speaker 2: boundary or that line. I'm very respectful in that sense.
- 55:54Speaker 2: But I also love being home. It's my fortress. It's
- 55:58Speaker 2: where I feel safe, you know. So I will go
- 56:01Speaker 2: to an event and my fiances in the entertainment industry too,
- 56:04Speaker 2: will go and then we're out and we're like, Okay,
- 56:07Speaker 2: we're home now, you know what I'm saying. We get
- 56:09Speaker 2: to chill a little bit. Yeah. So it's been a.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Balance and hearing your whole story, you can actually see
- 56:15Speaker 1: where your mom's uh what do you call it foundation
- 56:18Speaker 1: was laid even if you hear how you're talking about.
- 56:21Speaker 1: And I'll stay in your welcome like so you guys
- 56:23Speaker 1: living in the trailer and like, hey, be mindful of this,
- 56:26Speaker 1: very mindful everything that you had you carried, if you
- 56:30Speaker 1: actually trace it back, it's these little foundation seeds that.
- 56:34Speaker 3: She planted right right right. I just think that's incredible.
- 56:38Speaker 2: And my toughness that I have, I do have a
- 56:41Speaker 2: tough exterior and you know it's for my father, you
- 56:44Speaker 2: know what I mean, Because my father was out there
- 56:46Speaker 2: doing what he.
- 56:47Speaker 3: Did, gang banging, and he's still around right.
- 56:49Speaker 2: No, he passed away, and it was it was due
- 56:53Speaker 2: to his lifestyle, you know what I mean. He just
- 56:55Speaker 2: he succumbed to the lifestyle. He lied, you know, so,
- 56:58Speaker 2: but he passed away. But he taught me always to
- 57:01Speaker 2: be strong. And he'd be like, my daughters ain't no suckers,
- 57:03Speaker 2: you know what I mean. My dad growing up, I
- 57:08Speaker 2: don't know, just like you're, my daughters are gonna be
- 57:11Speaker 2: in suckers. You girls are gonna know what's going on.
- 57:13Speaker 2: When I was at a restaurant, my dad taught me
- 57:15Speaker 2: you never sit with your back towards the door. You
- 57:17Speaker 2: sit facing the door. You're a female, you know. I
- 57:21Speaker 2: remember when I had a Nissan Center. Back in the day,
- 57:22Speaker 2: we used to have something called Dayton's. I don't know
- 57:24Speaker 2: if you remember that, the rims. But I was like, Daddy,
- 57:26Speaker 2: I want Dayton's and he's like, no, you're a girl.
- 57:29Speaker 2: You don't want to draw attention. People are gonna try
- 57:30Speaker 2: to rob you. Like he always he was from the streets.
- 57:33Speaker 2: He had me. I was very streets.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Did he also teach you about man like players manibulation
- 57:37Speaker 1: all that day?
- 57:40Speaker 3: Yes, Yeah, And my.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Dad spoke to me like I was a boy, so
- 57:44Speaker 2: with a lot of cussing. It was a lot of
- 57:46Speaker 2: ulgarty you know what I mean. You're gonna You're gonna
- 57:49Speaker 2: go this dude, This dude, don't give a funk about you. Like.
- 57:51Speaker 2: But you got to understand, my daddy was from the streets.
- 57:54Speaker 2: He didn't have a father to be like. You know.
- 57:56Speaker 2: My mom used to have to remind him at you
- 57:59Speaker 2: got daughter, he's ain't your homeboys, and he'd be like, read,
- 58:02Speaker 2: I only know how to speak to them the way
- 58:03Speaker 2: I know how to talk. This is one, you know.
- 58:05Speaker 2: So I learned to accept that too. So I do
- 58:07Speaker 2: have a rough exterior that people be like, oh, you're
- 58:10Speaker 2: a little rough, But I'm very loving. But I feel
- 58:13Speaker 2: like I have my mom's like heart, you know, and
- 58:16Speaker 2: I try to apply it in everything that I do.
- 58:18Speaker 2: And I know that we're blessed. You know. My sister's successful.
- 58:21Speaker 2: I'm successful. My mother's had seven strokes, and we take
- 58:25Speaker 2: turns taking care of her, and thank God, we have
- 58:28Speaker 2: the ability to provide for her and to make sure
- 58:31Speaker 2: she's good and she's taken care of and our thing
- 58:33Speaker 2: was we don't want anybody else taking care of mom.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Mom didn't have nobody take care of us. She did
- 58:37Speaker 2: it by herself.
- 58:38Speaker 3: I love that. Yeah, I love that.
- 58:40Speaker 1: So where can everybody keep up with CC Valencia?
- 58:44Speaker 2: So you guys can follow.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Me on how to be like you? Just so I
- 58:46Speaker 3: don't know if you see, I'm like trying to add
- 58:47Speaker 3: my little radio cute.
- 58:49Speaker 2: I love it and I love your hair at I
- 58:52Speaker 2: AMCC Valencia on all social media platforms and you can
- 58:56Speaker 2: hear me every single day daily on KD from three
- 59:00Speaker 2: pm to seven pm. I do the afternoon Ride and
- 59:02Speaker 2: I'm the only girl doing afternoons in a hip hop format.
- 59:07Speaker 1: Wow.
- 59:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I love that.
- 59:08Speaker 1: I love everything about you than you, including your cooking. Okay,
- 59:13Speaker 1: but you're still in La right, You're not Valley.
- 59:16Speaker 2: I'm Valley.
- 59:17Speaker 3: You are.
- 59:18Speaker 2: No.
- 59:19Speaker 3: No, that's good because I'm Valley.
- 59:21Speaker 4: Okay.
