Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There were a couple of things when we get to
- 0:01Speaker 1: a college football note and high school footballcause the playoffs underway.
- 0:06Speaker 1: First college football, You've heard a lot of things about
- 0:09Speaker 1: Bill Belichick. What different people have thought about Bill Belichick returning?
- 0:15Speaker 1: What was it? We ran the sound bite yesterday from
- 0:17Speaker 1: Rich Eisen from his show with Sark Sark. The word
- 0:21Speaker 1: Sark used was fascinated. I'm fascinated by this. How does
- 0:27Speaker 1: Nick Saban feel about it? He was asked about Bill
- 0:31Speaker 1: Belichick returning.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, coach after West Virginia hire and Rich Rout, the
- 0:35Speaker 2: second biggest hiring is definitely Bill Belichick down in UNC.
- 0:39Speaker 2: What do you think about that whole plan for UNC?
- 0:41Speaker 2: I don't know saw the Bill Belichick contract and things
- 0:45Speaker 2: of that nature, but there's escalators and stuff like that,
- 0:47Speaker 2: and there's an out possibly. Why did you think he
- 0:51Speaker 2: went to UNC? And you see other guys from the
- 0:53Speaker 2: NFL maybe making the jump to college because it is
- 0:56Speaker 2: much more like the pro game.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Now.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Well, I look, I'm happy for Bill. I think he
- 1:04Speaker 3: probably wanted a new challenge and this is certainly going
- 1:08Speaker 3: to be a great challenge for him. North Carolina is
- 1:10Speaker 3: a great academic institution as well as They've got plenty
- 1:14Speaker 3: of you know, athletic tradition there in basketball, football, and
- 1:19Speaker 3: Bill's a great coach. And I think the biggest difference,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and I coached both. You know, I coached in the
- 1:24Speaker 3: NFL as a coordinator, as an assistant, as a head coach,
- 1:27Speaker 3: and I coached in college and all three of those
- 1:30Speaker 3: responsibilities as well, is coaching the players is really not
- 1:35Speaker 3: that different. You know, people always say, well, that's really
- 1:38Speaker 3: hard to coach them guys in the NFL. I never
- 1:40Speaker 3: thought that was a problem. You know, if you're a
- 1:43Speaker 3: good coach and you create value for those guys, they
- 1:45Speaker 3: love you because you're going to extend their career, they're
- 1:48Speaker 3: going to make more money, and they're happy. The difference
- 1:51Speaker 3: in college is how do you bring guys to the team.
- 1:55Speaker 3: You know, it's different than drafting guys than it is
- 1:57Speaker 3: to have to recruit them, because recruiting is like a
- 2:01Speaker 3: full time relationship building three hundred and sixty five days
- 2:04Speaker 3: a year in terms of not only evaluating the players
- 2:08Speaker 3: that you want, but creating the relationships with them to
- 2:11Speaker 3: get them. Now, everybody says it's like the NFL because
- 2:14Speaker 3: they're making money now, but it really still takes you
- 2:18Speaker 3: to be able to sell them that you're going to
- 2:19Speaker 3: develop them, and I think Bill will be able to
- 2:21Speaker 3: do that. But I think the biggest thing that will
- 2:24Speaker 3: be a challenge for him is the time that you
- 2:27Speaker 3: have to spend recruiting, making phone calls, talking to parents
- 2:31Speaker 3: and all those types of things to get the kind
- 2:34Speaker 3: of players that you need. You know, having the resources
- 2:36Speaker 3: is important to be able to pay them, and I'm
- 2:39Speaker 3: glad that the players get paid. I'm not crazy about
- 2:41Speaker 3: the system that they're getting paid in, but I hope
- 2:43Speaker 3: we can get that fixed. But I do think this
- 2:46Speaker 3: guy's going to Bill do a great job there of
- 2:48Speaker 3: getting good players, and he'll do a great job of
- 2:50Speaker 3: developing those players. The biggest adjustment for him will be
- 2:53Speaker 3: the time spent recruiting.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Okay, coach on that note, I think there's a lot
- 2:58Speaker 4: of people, I mean, maybe myself included, and I have
- 3:02Speaker 4: not been in your position or in the college football
- 3:04Speaker 4: world long enough to think like this, but like people
- 3:07Speaker 4: see what happened with coach Prime, or coach Prime's not
- 3:09Speaker 4: taking as many in house visits. He kind of does
- 3:11Speaker 4: everything very FaceTime or zoom, and then he's able to
- 3:14Speaker 4: land obviously, because he's coach Prime and everybody has faith
- 3:18Speaker 4: and trust that he's going to be able to get
- 3:19Speaker 4: the bulls to become successful men.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So there it is. That was Pat
- 3:26Speaker 1: mcaveee asking that they were in West Virginia for the
- 3:28Speaker 1: rich Rod hiring as well. Of course Nick Saban from
- 3:32Speaker 1: the state of West Virginia and Pat mcavee make no
- 3:36Speaker 1: bones about as well, so they were both there doing it.
- 3:39Speaker 5: So yeah. Interesting the mcapee, mcmgapee. Did McAfee play for
- 3:43Speaker 5: rich Rod or is he after rich Rod? Uh?
- 3:49Speaker 1: He might have played for him or might have preceded him,
- 3:54Speaker 1: now that I'll think about it.
- 3:55Speaker 5: See, he was in West Virginia, Yeah, five to eight,
- 3:57Speaker 5: so he was right there on the riche. So that's
- 3:59Speaker 5: why he's sot this rich Rod higher. Okay, all right,
- 4:02Speaker 5: outside of probably being a nil donor for a.
- 4:05Speaker 1: West Yeah, I'm sure he's that. I'm I'm sure he
- 4:09Speaker 1: is being able to you know, has the means clearly
- 4:14Speaker 1: in his donating on that. I did want to bring
- 4:17Speaker 1: everybody up to Pete on what's going on with the
- 4:19Speaker 1: Texas high school football payoffs. This is final four weekend,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it's semifinal weekend and across the state of Texas. There
- 4:30Speaker 1: here are the matchups. First of all, in sixth A
- 4:34Speaker 1: Division one, duncan Villa, the defending state champ, two time
- 4:37Speaker 1: defending state champ, playing North Crowley. That's gonna be a
- 4:40Speaker 1: really good game tomorrow, a lot of people think North
- 4:42Speaker 1: Crowley might knock him off. That's at Eagles Stadium and
- 4:45Speaker 1: Allen at three o'clock. The winner of that gets the
- 4:47Speaker 1: winner of the matchup tomorrow and Katie between west Lake
- 4:50Speaker 1: and north Shore and I'll be joined by Greg Tepper
- 4:54Speaker 1: for the call of that tomorrow afternoon on FanDuel Sports
- 4:58Speaker 1: Network Southwest. He said, what network does that? Remember? Balley's
- 5:01Speaker 1: Sports Southwest and even before that was Fox Sports Southwest,
- 5:04Speaker 1: same place you find it on the dial. It's just
- 5:06Speaker 1: a different title sponsor on it now. But west Lake
- 5:09Speaker 1: and north Shore tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock. There six
- 5:12Speaker 1: A Division two also tomorrow, South Lake, Carol and Longview
- 5:16Speaker 1: play at Ford Stadium on the SMU campus at two
- 5:19Speaker 1: and tomorrow night. This will be the final game of
- 5:22Speaker 1: Summerfinal Weekend at McLean Stadium in Wake, home of the
- 5:26Speaker 1: Baylor Bears, Vandergrift and Summer Creek. Now, I think the
- 5:31Speaker 1: weather is going to clear out and be okay by
- 5:34Speaker 1: the time they get the Saturday night, which would be
- 5:35Speaker 1: a good thing for Vandergriff. They're gonna have their hands
- 5:38Speaker 1: full of Summer Creek. In fact, I think the computer
- 5:42Speaker 1: likes Summer Creek by ten points on that like North
- 5:46Speaker 1: Shore by nine over Westlake they like. The computer likes
- 5:49Speaker 1: North Crowley by two over Duncanville and likes South Lake
- 5:52Speaker 1: Carol by two over Longview. Five A Division one, Dent
- 5:57Speaker 1: Ryan and Highland Park played a night in Frisco, and
- 6:01Speaker 1: tomorrow is Angleton and Smithson Valley playing at McClain Stadium
- 6:04Speaker 1: at two thirty, So there's two games there on the
- 6:06Speaker 1: Baylor campus. There at McLain Stadium, Angleton and Smithson Valley
- 6:09Speaker 1: in the five A D one semifinals at two thirty
- 6:13Speaker 1: and then the six eighty two semifinals at seven o'clock
- 6:16Speaker 1: is Summer Creek and Vandergrid Five A Division two. Both
- 6:19Speaker 1: games are tonight Argyle and Southolkcliff on the SMU campus. Richmond,
- 6:23Speaker 1: Randall and Bernie playing in Waco at McLean Stadium. Boyd
- 6:27Speaker 1: mclin'sdam is gonna be busy this weekend. Seven o'clock kickoff
- 6:30Speaker 1: tonight for A Division one both games Tonight Salina number
- 6:35Speaker 1: one team in the state against Canyon West Plains, the
- 6:37Speaker 1: team that stunned Steven to knock them out. That's at
- 6:41Speaker 1: Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
- 6:43Speaker 3: To night.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Also tonight, Lavernia, the team that knocked out LBJ in
- 6:48Speaker 1: the playoffs, is playing Kilgore and that is at Randall
- 6:51Speaker 1: Stadium in New Caney. We're in the Greater Houston area
- 6:53Speaker 1: tonight for a Division two top rank Carthage against Brock.
- 6:58Speaker 1: They playing McKinney tonight. Also tonight, Wimberley and Lavega play
- 7:01Speaker 1: in Georgetown. If you looking for a game to go
- 7:03Speaker 1: to locally, that would be in Georgetown tonight for Wimberley
- 7:09Speaker 1: and Levega three A Division one. Both games were played
- 7:13Speaker 1: last night. Number one team in the state, defending state
- 7:17Speaker 1: champion Malakoff, was down nineteen to seven in the fourth
- 7:22Speaker 1: quarter to Paradise, had a drive for a touchdown, got
- 7:25Speaker 1: a pick six to take the lead, and then scored
- 7:26Speaker 1: one late touchdown. Malacoff prevailed twenty seven nineteen and Malakoff
- 7:31Speaker 1: in the state championship where they'll play Columbus. The Cardinals
- 7:35Speaker 1: blast at EDNA forty nine to six. Columbus is the
- 7:40Speaker 1: team they had started. At one point, they had been
- 7:41Speaker 1: number one. They've gotten upset at one point, but they're
- 7:43Speaker 1: number two. So it's number one against number two. They're
- 7:46Speaker 1: going to play for the state championship. I'm pretty pump
- 7:48Speaker 1: about it. I'm going to do that game next Thursday night.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Columbus of course has that showbl family connection showbul as.
- 7:55Speaker 1: The coach Aaron Shobel his brother both had played at Columbus,
- 7:58Speaker 1: had played at TCU, played in the NFL. They're the
- 8:02Speaker 1: Aaron Schobles an assistant coach, Matt Trouble, the head coach,
- 8:06Speaker 1: Adam Schouble, the quarterback of that team. They also got
- 8:09Speaker 1: Grayson Rigdan who was that three time player of the
- 8:12Speaker 1: year in six man that moved down and he's had
- 8:15Speaker 1: a really good season. And of course Shobles Restaurant. If
- 8:18Speaker 1: you've ever been down there, you know Highway seventy one
- 8:22Speaker 1: down there is it rolls pasted it on the way
- 8:24Speaker 1: to I ten Showbles. It's good eating there anyway. That
- 8:28Speaker 1: that's the game next Thursday at number one and number
- 8:30Speaker 1: two in the State three A Division two will feature
- 8:39Speaker 1: the Gunner Wall winner and Gunner with the winner of that,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and they will get Woodville in the state championship round
- 8:49Speaker 1: for the first time ever as a Woodville. In fact,
- 8:54Speaker 1: Woodville never gotten beyond the second round of the playoffs.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And they beat tide Haven, who was in the final
- 9:01Speaker 1: a year ago, to a Division one Stamford took care
- 9:05Speaker 1: of Hamilton, ended Hamilton's unbeaten season. They won twenty eight
- 9:11Speaker 1: to thirteen and they will play Gnado who knocked out
- 9:16Speaker 1: Joaquin defeated them, so that'll be. They won thirty five
- 9:21Speaker 1: to fourteen to win that one. So there it is.
- 9:23Speaker 1: There's your high school football and the six man championships.
- 9:26Speaker 1: The matchups are also to a Division two Monster one
- 9:31Speaker 1: and they beat Groover and also winning was Shiner beating Bremont,
- 9:38Speaker 1: So it's Munster and Shiner next Tuesday night. We're calling
- 9:41Speaker 1: that the Beer versus Cheese Bowl. That and then the
- 9:45Speaker 1: six man state finals are already set next Wednesday morning
- 9:48Speaker 1: and afternoon. Top rank Gordon in Division one against Whiteface,
- 9:51Speaker 1: Jaydon and Oakwood in Division two. We'll be back to
- 9:54Speaker 1: wrap up today's edition of the program here on sports
- 9:56Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the zone,
