- 0:00Speaker 1: Episode 3, Beyond the Smoke, Rewriting Your Identity as a Non-Smoker.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to The Smoke-Free Life. I am
- 0:10Speaker 1: delighted you are here with me for Episode 3. Today,
- 0:14Speaker 1: we are exploring the psychological side of quitting smoking, rewriting
- 0:19Speaker 1: your identity, and breaking the emotional triggers that tie you
- 0:23Speaker 1: to the habit. Many people fail to quit smoking permanently
- 0:28Speaker 1: because because they approach the process with a victim mindset
- 0:32Speaker 1: of sacrifice and deprivation. They tell themselves, I am trying
- 0:38Speaker 1: to quit smoking, but I am giving up my favorite
- 0:41Speaker 1: stress relief, my social ritual, and my comfort. When you
- 0:46Speaker 1: view quitting as a painful sacrifice, you live in a
- 0:50Speaker 1: state of continuous internal conflict. You feel like you are
- 0:55Speaker 1: depriving yourself of something valuable, which makes every craving feel
- 1:00Speaker 1: like a battle of willpower. To quit permanently and effortlessly,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you must shift your identity from a smoker trying to
- 1:08Speaker 1: quit into a proud, happy non-smoker. A non-smoker does not
- 1:14Speaker 1: feel deprived when they see a cigarette. A non-smoker feels
- 1:18Speaker 1: indifference or pity because they know they have escaped a
- 1:22Speaker 1: trap that others are still caught in. Let us master
- 1:26Speaker 1: three psychological strategies to break emotional triggers and rewrite your identity.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Strategy number one is uncoupling smoking from your daily routines
- 1:39Speaker 1: and emotional tea. Smoking is rarely just a chemical addiction.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It is a deeply embedded behavioral routine tied to specific
- 1:50Speaker 1: daily cues. Your morning coffee, driving your car, finishing a meal,
- 1:56Speaker 1: taking a work break, or experiencing social stress. Identify your
- 2:02Speaker 1: primary smoking triggers and deliberately redesign those routines. If you
- 2:08Speaker 1: always smoked with your morning coffee, switch to tea for
- 2:12Speaker 1: a few weeks, sit in a different chair, or drink
- 2:15Speaker 1: your coffee while walking. Breaking the physical association between your
- 2:20Speaker 1: daily cues and the cigarette can disrupts the automatic habit loop.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Strategy number two is REF, reaming the physical sensation of
- 2:30Speaker 1: a craving. When a nicotine craving hits during the first
- 2:35Speaker 1: few days, your brain interprets the physical sensation as an emergency.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Reframe that physical sensation consciously. Instead of viewing a craving
- 2:47Speaker 1: as a sign of suffering or deprivation, view it as
- 2:50Speaker 1: the dying gasp of the nicotine monster inside your body.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Every time you feel a craving and refuse to smoke,
- 2:59Speaker 1: that chemical monster starves a little bit more, bringing you
- 3:03Speaker 1: closer to permanent freedom. Smile at the craving, take three
- 3:08Speaker 1: deep exhales, and watch it fade away. Strategy number three
- 3:13Speaker 1: is celebrating your liberation. Remind yourself daily of what you
- 3:18Speaker 1: have gained rather than what you have left behind. Financial savings,
- 3:23Speaker 1: physical freedom, clean breath, white teeth, boundless energy, and control
- 3:29Speaker 1: over your own life. By shifting your identity, uncoupling routines,
- 3:35Speaker 1: reframing cravings, and celebrating freedom, you make quitting an empowering liberation.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to Episode 3. Identify one daily
- 3:46Speaker 1: routine tied to smoking and alter it today. In Episode 4,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we will explore managing stress and emotions without nicotine. See
- 3:57Speaker 1: you there!
