- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Bridget of Sweden. Widow. October 8 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, Saint Bridget was a descendant of the kings of Sweden.
- 0:31She was married to the Prince of Mauritia and brought up her eight children in a holy way. One of them was Saint Catherine of Sweden. She led her husband to such a virtuous life that he renounced the world to submit himself to the Cistercian rule in the monastery of Ulvestre. He died there in the odor of sanctity. Bridget became still more fervent in her holy widowhood devoting herself to all manner of good works and persevering day and night in prayer.
- 1:13As the epistle says, Like a man who has discovered a treasure and who sells all he possesses to acquire it which we read about in the gospel she divided her riches among her children and detached from everything she only sought the kingdom of heaven. Filled with the fear of God she subjected her body to the severest penance echoed in the introit and Jesus whom she thus imitated in his passion rewarded her by revealing heavenly secrets to her. As mentioned in the collect, he gave her the constitutions of the order which she founded under the rule of Saint Augustine. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 2:15The introit. Just are thy awards. I know it well, O Lord. It was in faithfulness thou didst afflict me. Overcome my whole being with the fear of thee.
- 2:31I am in dread of thy judgments. Blessed are they who pass through life's journey unstained following the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Just are thy awards.
- 3:00I know it well, O Lord. It was in faithfulness thou didst afflict me. Overcome my whole being with the fear of thee. I am in dread of thy judgments. The Collect.
- 3:18Let us pray. O Lord our God, who through thine only begotten son didst unveil heavenly secrets to blessed Bridget, grant through her loving intercession that we thy servants may rejoice with thine everlasting gladness when thy glory is unveiled through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Beloved, give widows their due, if that name really belongs to them.
- 4:12If a widowed woman is left with children or grandchildren she must be warned that their own flesh and blood has the first claim on their piety. They must make due returns to those who gave them birth. That is what God asks of them. The woman who is indeed a widow bereft of all help will put her trust in God and spend her time night and day upon the prayers and petitions that belong to her state. One who lives in luxury would be alive and dead both at once.
- 4:59Warn them of this too or they will bring themselves into disrepute. The man who makes no provision for those nearest him above all his own family has contradicted the teaching of the faith and indeed does worse than the unbelievers do. If a woman is to be put on the list of widows she must have reached at least the age of 60 and have been faithful to one husband. She must have a name for acts of charity. Has she brought up children?
- 5:42Has she been hospitable? Has she washed the feet of the saints? Has she helped those who were in affliction? Has she attached herself to every charitable cause? The gradual Grace is poured out upon your lips.
- 6:08Thus, has blessed you forever because of truth and meekness and justice. Thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia. Alleluia. In all thy majesty, in all thy beauty, make ready, ride on in triumph, and take thy crown.
- 6:34Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, Jesus told his disciples this parable. The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. A man has found it and hidden it again.
- 6:59And now for the joy it gives him is going home to sell all that he has and buy that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is as if a trader were looking for rare pearls. And now he has found one pearl of great price and has sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and enclosed fish of every kind at once. When it was full, the fishermen drew it up and sat down on the beach where they stored all that was worth keeping in their buckets and threw the useless kind away.
- 7:49So it will be when the world is brought to an end. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the just and will cast them into the furnace of fire where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you grasped all this? Yes, Lord. They said to him.
- 8:13And he said to them, every scholar then whose learning is of the kingdom of heaven must be like a rich man who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old. The offertory, grace is poured out upon your lips. Thus, God has blessed you forever. The secret. May this sacrifice of thy dedicated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honor of thy saints to whose merits we attribute the help afforded us in tribulation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 9:18Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe.
- 9:49The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 10:22Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. You love righteousness and hate wickedness. Therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
- 10:50The post communion. Let us pray. Thou hast filled thy household, O Lord, with holy gifts. Do thou cherish us always through the intercession of her whose festival we are keeping through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost. God through all ages of ages.
- 11:23Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Bridget of Sweden, pray for us.
