- 0:27country. This is National In 101 as God
- 0:32explains to the people of Israel.
- 0:34Well what it's like to have property that they get to keep.
- 0:39You know all those Generations stuck in Egypt as slaves where
- 0:43they really had no rights and now all of a sudden they have
- 0:46freedom and they have rights and to make sure that they don't
- 0:50head down a way of while selfishness and Gathering as
- 0:53much for themselves as they can, God sets out a pattern of what
- 0:57it looks like to live with an i On those less fortunate and to
- 1:01make sure that everyone is looked after this is just so
- 1:06cool. So let's read join me.
- 1:08As we read together. Exodus chapter 22.
- 1:23If someone steals an ox or sheep and in kills, or sells it, the
- 1:27thief must pay back, five oxen for each Ox stolen, and for
- 1:32sheep for each sheep stolen, if a thief is caught in the act of
- 1:36breaking into a house and is struck and killed in the
- 1:39process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty of
- 1:43murder, but if it happens in daylight, the one who killed the
- 1:47thief is guilty of murder. A thief who is caught must pay
- 1:52in full for everything, he stole.
- 1:54If he cannot pay, he must be sold as a slave to pay for his
- 1:58theft. If someone steals an ox or a
- 2:01donkey or a sheep, and it is found in the fixed position,
- 2:05then the thief must pay double the value of the stolen animal.
- 2:10If an animal is grazing in a field or Vineyard and the owner,
- 2:13let's it stray into someone else's field to graze, then the
- 2:17animals owner must pay compensation From the best of
- 2:21his own grain or grapes, if you are burning Thorn bushes and the
- 2:25Fire gets out of control and spreads into another person's
- 2:28field. Destroying the sheaves or the
- 2:31uncut grain or the whole crop. The one who started the fire
- 2:35must pay for the Lost crop. Suppose someone leaves money or
- 2:40Goods with the neighbor for safekeeping, but they are stolen
- 2:43from the neighbor's house. If the thief is caught, the
- 2:47compensation is double the value of what was stolen.
- 2:50But if the thief is not caught, the neighbor must appear before
- 2:54God who will determine if he stole the property.
- 2:58Suppose there is a dispute between two people who both
- 3:01claim to own a particular, Ox donkey sheep, article of
- 3:05clothing or any Lost Property. Both parties must come before
- 3:09God. And the person whom God,
- 3:12declares guilty, must pay double compensation to the other hand.
- 3:17Suppose someone leaves a donkey Ox sheep, or any other animal
- 3:21with a neighbor for safekeeping, but it dies or is injured or is
- 3:25taken away. And no one sees what happened.
- 3:29The neighbor must then take an oath in the presence of the
- 3:31Lord, if the Lord, confirms that the neighbor did not steal the
- 3:35property. The owner must accept the
- 3:37verdict and no payment will be required, but if the animal was
- 3:42indeed, stolen the guilty person, must pay compensation to
- 3:46the owner. If it was Torn to Pieces by a
- 3:49wild animal, the remains of the carcass must be shown as
- 3:53evidence, and no compensation will be required.
- 3:56If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor, and in his
- 3:59injured or dies, when the owner is absent, the person who
- 4:02borrowed it must pay full compensation, but if the owner
- 4:06was present, no compensation is required.
- 4:10And no compensation is required. If the animal was rented for the
- 4:13losses covered by the rental fee, if a man seduces a virgin
- 4:19who is not engaged to anyone and has sex with her, he must pay
- 4:23the customary bride price and marry her, but if her father
- 4:28refuses to let him marry her, the man may still pay him an
- 4:32amount equal to the bride. Price of a virgin, you must not
- 4:36allow a sorceress to live anyone who has sexual relations with an
- 4:41animal must certainly be put to death.
- 4:44Anyone who sacrifices to any God, other than the Lord must be
- 4:48destroyed. You must not mistreat or oppress
- 4:52foreigners in any way. Remember you yourselves were
- 4:55once foreigners in the land of Egypt, you must not exploit a
- 4:59widow or an orphan if you exploit them in any way and then
- 5:03cry out to me, then I will certainly hear their cry.
- 5:08My anger will Blaze against you and I will kill you with the
- 5:11sword, then your wives will be Widows and your children
- 5:15fatherless. If you lend money to any of my
- 5:19people who are in need, do not charge interest as a money
- 5:23lender. Would, if you take your
- 5:25neighbors, cloak as security for a loan, you must return a Before
- 5:29Sunset. This coat may be the only
- 5:32blanket, your neighbor has, how can a person sleep without it,
- 5:37if you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for
- 5:39help, then I will hear for I am merciful Do not dishonor.
- 5:45God or curse, any of your rulers.
- 5:49You must not hold anything back. When you give me offerings from
- 5:52your crops and your wine, you must give me your firstborn
- 5:56Sons. You must also give me the
- 5:59firstborn of your cattle sheep and goats but leave the newborn
- 6:03animal with its mother for seven days and then give it to me on
- 6:06the eighth day. You must be my holy people.
- 6:11Therefore do not eat any animal that has been torn up and killed
- 6:15by wild animals, throw it to the dogs.
- 6:29How father we see your heart implicit in these instructions,
- 6:34we see that you want the best for your people.
- 6:39You want us to live as communities who care for one
- 6:41another. Not that all of these rules.
- 6:44Still bind us to do with oxygen sheep and donkeys.
- 6:48But we're here the way that you want your people to relate to
- 6:51each other, with honesty and kindness, and fairness and
- 6:55Justice, looking out for those. Who are struggling themselves?
- 7:02Lord change our hearts to be like yours, soften our
- 7:06self-interest, so that we can look beyond our own needs to the
- 7:10needs of our community and to the needs of each other.
- 7:14And thank you that you saw our need and you gave us Jesus.
- 7:18Who met all of our needs now and deep into eternity?
- 7:23And we are so grateful, thank you for Jesus.
- 7:26And it's in his name that we pray.
- 7:29Amen.
