- 0:13Seals in here. cyclonereport.com, Mr. Monday
- 0:16night and trends, plays of the day circus sports sponsor those
- 0:19boys circus. No, no surprise, just packed
- 0:22over unbelievable watching some of the crowds, some of the
- 0:26videos that were on X. What a place to watch football
- 0:29on the weekend. Let's recap the weekend in
- 0:32college football. Our guy, Bama Bob joins us just
- 0:34twice weekly, Friday to preview, for Monday to recap.
- 0:39Good to talk to you, Bama. You know where I want to start
- 0:41with you gentlemen. Say it, Trent.
- 0:44Please no. Please no.
- 0:46I want to start. With a with a queue that you
- 0:49posed in our little group chat late on Thursday night pointing
- 0:54out just what a big weekend potentially it could be for the
- 0:56Big 12. And obviously they had a couple
- 1:01of wins, but not enough maybe. Your thoughts?
- 1:04Well, it's still dependent on what happens.
- 1:06Look, if we get 11 and one Utah against 11 and one Iowa State in
- 1:11the conference championship game, I feel like they're
- 1:13probably in good shape, but potentially depending on what
- 1:15else is happening. Or if Mississippi State wins the
- 1:18SEC. Or Mississippi State even has a
- 1:20nice year in Arizona State's involved.
- 1:22You know, if Mississippi State's a bowl team, though, and Arizona
- 1:25State's involved attended, it won't look at the same level.
- 1:28But if Mississippi State's bad and if West Virginia's like a
- 1:31bowl team and yet they lost to Ohio, there's a lot of different
- 1:34ways they could go. It wasn't an awful, It wasn't a
- 1:36tremendous weekend, positive or negative, But there are a couple
- 1:41merits there that could hurt them down there.
- 1:42Kansas coughing it up with. A that would have.
- 1:45Been what, a huge win. I guess you can say that Blake
- 1:49Chapin cut his teeth in the Big 12 Mississippi State's
- 1:51quarterbacks, right? So there's that.
- 1:53Bama. What did you think of the Big 12
- 1:54overall, Bama? Yeah, I thought, I think you're
- 1:58right. I think Kansas was the one that
- 1:59kind of really, you know, maybe had a chance to make a
- 2:02statement. Arizona State loss looks bad
- 2:06just because it's Mississippi State and I think Mississippi
- 2:09State is better. They're not going to, you know,
- 2:14championship game or the playoff, but I think they're
- 2:17better. And you're right.
- 2:18I mean, Chapin was, he was good and that, you know, Arizona had
- 2:22a Arizona State had a bust at the end.
- 2:24They came back and took the lead and and then gave it up.
- 2:26So that Thompson kid, you know? Yeah, yeah, receiver.
- 2:31He's got some wheels, yeah. He does.
- 2:34He's like they called him the fastest player in the in the in
- 2:37the country. I don't know if that's true or
- 2:38not, but really Scoot, that's for sure.
- 2:40Yeah, that's what the the broadcasters.
- 2:42Yeah, the monitoring system that they have to get miles an hour.
- 2:45He was the fastest guy in the country.
- 2:47I'll be damned, yeah. Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 2:49And so, you know, you don't. It's funny because, you know, I
- 2:54watched just the end of that game a little bit and it was the
- 2:57classic, you know, they instead of going, they they were playing
- 3:00prevent, prevent defense and they were kind of moving on him
- 3:03and and they went and, you know, blitzed and played man, and they
- 3:05burned them. So everybody who gets
- 3:06frustrated, you know, by well, why don't we play prevent, let
- 3:10them go all the way down the field?
- 3:11Well, maybe that's why right there.
- 3:13But it was just a total bust and confusion.
- 3:14So I thought that game was entertaining.
- 3:16I thought West Virginia, West Virginia really hurt themselves
- 3:19not only for losing the game, but I don't know if you heard
- 3:21Herb St. on the Michigan, Oklahoma game.
- 3:24It cost them a game day spot. That's right, they were going
- 3:28to. The Pit, they were going to
- 3:29Morgantown for the back of the brawl and now with that loss
- 3:33going to Knoxville. So it's, you know, that that was
- 3:36a, that was a really big loss, but you know, good win for Ohio.
- 3:39So I think it, I think you're right.
- 3:41I think it's mixed results. I think Iowa State really kind
- 3:44of had to win that game, you know, in order to kind of keep,
- 3:48like you said, I think it's Iowa State and Utah pretty much, you
- 3:52know, for, for getting 2 spots and two of the three, Arizona
- 3:57State, Iowa State and Utah kind of have to run the table or go
- 4:01with maybe, maybe meet with one loss in the championship game
- 4:04and then maybe the two of them get in.
- 4:05But, and it's just really going to depend obviously on what else
- 4:08other teams do around the country.
- 4:10Is it how many is the ACC going to get in?
- 4:12Is Notre Dame going to get in all that type of thing.
- 4:14But you know, the other thing about the Big 12 is how, just
- 4:18how God awful is Oklahoma State? I mean that that was and it was
- 4:24it was. Right from the jump. 69 to 3 and
- 4:27it wasn't as close as it looked. No, he.
- 4:30Called off the dogs. He did, he did.
- 4:33And it was it was. I don't know, Gundy's got real
- 4:35problems and there's just nothing happening.
- 4:37They're the UCLA of the of the Midwest.
- 4:39So mixed bag results. I agree.
- 4:41For the big, I like Baylor's win.
- 4:43Double overtime. Got to give Soy.
- 4:44Robinson some absolutely very nice and that could wind up kind
- 4:48of hurting the ACC down the line, although obviously, you
- 4:51know, whoever wins that conference is going to get in.
- 4:54But that's the kind of thing, you know, SMU got in undefeated
- 4:56last year year other than the conference championship game.
- 4:58Well, that's not going to happen this year.
- 5:00What do you think? Yeah.
- 5:02So I don't know that they're going to be in that large team.
- 5:04So. But yeah, nice, very nice win
- 5:06for Baylor. Absolutely.
- 5:07Good point out to you. K State getting beat by Army.
- 5:10I'll throw 2 mother two more Big 12 teams in there that I think
- 5:13are factors and we don't know yet because I'm playing anybody.
- 5:15Texas Tech Yep, and I'd like BYU you like?
- 5:19Bareback. Meyer, he's not brutal, not
- 5:22brutal. I want to see more in BYU.
- 5:23They play Stanford. Oh, Stanford got beat by Hawaii
- 5:27in week 1 or week Was that week 0 Big Zero?
- 5:29Yeah. Yeah, it was week zero.
- 5:30Yeah. Anyways, all right, let's go to
- 5:33the let's go to the big 10 kind of jumping all around here in
- 5:37non conference games. But Trent, you're you're big 10.
- 5:40What was your who's your team of the of the weekend in the big
- 5:4310? If there is.
- 5:44One I, I think it has to be Illinois and though Duke, I mean
- 5:47talk about giving a game away, three first half turnovers, you
- 5:50get the ball back. No, you got 2 punt returners or
- 5:52two guys on the punt return team wearing the same number.
- 5:55You can't do that ball. Ball back to Illinois that was
- 5:58eye opening and though it was a close game they pulled away in
- 6:00the fourth quarter. Maybe my favorite part about it
- 6:03though, big fat Burt on the sideline as he's just trolling
- 6:06Manny Diaz. Well, all right, you're going to
- 6:08substitute. I'm going to substitute my whole
- 6:10defensive line and those big guys are going to come chugging
- 6:13in and you're not going to have any time to get a snap off.
- 6:16Manny Diaz is pretty even keel guy.
- 6:18It felt like he wanted to spit. Neil's the other way over at
- 6:21there at Bielema. Look with the shame, Bielema
- 6:23snapped. Last year, another nice.
- 6:25Guy, another seemingly nice guy Bielema could bring out the
- 6:28worst in opposing coaches, no doubt about that That was
- 6:32something So what about this is is Boston College good or
- 6:35because that was Michigan's that was that was 2 overtimes too yes
- 6:39it. Was.
- 6:40On NBC any did. You see any of that?
- 6:43I did, yeah. I had that one on for that upper
- 6:45left TV if my memory services were that one, and it was
- 6:49entertaining. I, I really enjoyed that one a
- 6:51lot back and forth, not a whole lot of defense.
- 6:53I told you guys I think on Friday, I just like O'Brien.
- 6:56He's just a good solid, certainly at the collegiate
- 6:57level, good coach. How did child's play?
- 7:01Inconsistent. Was he?
- 7:02But when he's good, he's really good.
- 7:05But there were also some awful, awful throws.
- 7:07That's that's what you get with Childs.
- 7:08You get good Childs, he can beat anybody.
- 7:11You get bad, you can lose to anybody.
- 7:13Big 10 Bama, obviously Illinois Duke for you as well, right?
- 7:17Oh yeah. And I gosh, we tried to tell
- 7:19somebody didn't we can on Friday.
- 7:21Who's going to win that game? You know, I know and I know
- 7:25Coulda, Woulda showed up, you know, 3 turnovers and all that.
- 7:27I think that was a really good win for Illinois.
- 7:29I think a win they kind of had, you know, had to have if you
- 7:32want to, if they're going to be looking at anything down the
- 7:35road. They've got, you know, they go
- 7:37to, they got Western Michigan, they go to Indiana, they get USC
- 7:40at home, Ohio State still on the schedule at home.
- 7:42So that's that's a team. I think we talked about it and
- 7:45can make some noise. So that was kind of a thought I
- 7:47had to have it for them. You know, you mentioned Michigan
- 7:53State and and Boston College. That was an entertaining game.
- 7:57And I think that was just one of those.
- 7:59It's kind of a weird match up, if you will.
- 8:02But I think those are both teams that kind of their opponents
- 8:06that kind of, you know, mirror each other and are kind of
- 8:08playing to their level, if you will.
- 8:09You know, they're not, they're not, you know, BC is not going
- 8:12to Ohio State and Michigan State's not, you know, going to
- 8:14Clemson or anything like that. I think that's a really nice
- 8:17game for both of those programs. It was entertaining double
- 8:21overtime, as you mentioned. I think that's a really good win
- 8:23for Jonathan Smith. I still don't know that they're
- 8:26a bowl team this year because they've, you know, they've got a
- 8:29lot in front of them. But you know, two of those the
- 8:31best you can be. They've got Youngstown State and
- 8:34they go to USC that's going to and then Nebraska.
- 8:37So those those are, you know, probably going to come back to
- 8:40reality type games. But, yeah, I mean, other than
- 8:43that, you know, Ohio State, Penn State, Penn State taken a little
- 8:47heat, I guess, because it wasn't really a dominating win over
- 8:51FIU. But you know, Michigan,
- 8:54obviously, you know, the big game of the week losing and then
- 8:58Iowa losing to Iowa Stadium. I'm sure you guys have dissected
- 9:01that one. But you know, Underwood, he's
- 9:04taking some heat, too. And I think a lot of it is, you
- 9:06know, what he, what he's reportedly getting paid, what he
- 9:09said about himself and. Then getting into his running
- 9:11backs face. Yeah, and I didn't like that.
- 9:15You know, listen, if if you're, I understand you're the quote UN
- 9:18quote leader, but you know, are you?
- 9:20You're kind of the anointed leader, if you will.
- 9:23I don't know that he's really earned that right yet.
- 9:26And listen, I again, you know, I want to sound like Ryan Clark.
- 9:29You know, I didn't play the game, so I don't know what I'm
- 9:30talking about, but you know, whatever.
- 9:33But it's just I don't I don't necessarily like that look.
- 9:37And Justice Haynes in Alabama, you know, transfer.
- 9:40So, you know, it is what it is. I think there's better ways to
- 9:44go at it. You know, you kind of calm down,
- 9:45go to the, you know, go to the bench and you talk about it.
- 9:47You can disagree fine, but I didn't like that in your face.
- 9:50But, you know, Underwood's taking some heat and I think
- 9:52it's maybe deserved. He didn't play terrible.
- 9:54He didn't have a lot of rounding, but he got out play by
- 9:57material. There's no question.
- 9:58I think right now, and I was going to save this for once we
- 10:01get to the SEC, but I guess it's kind of go just real quick.
- 10:05UCLA brutal, I mean. Just came.
- 10:07Back. Had had the ball late with the
- 10:09chance to tie it, but yeah, that's so bad.
- 10:10They better beat New Mexico this week, right?
- 10:13Right. Well, then they get Northwest
- 10:14Mexico. Yeah, I was.
- 10:15Wondering that schedule, Ken and I wouldn't talk about it, but
- 10:18how many people do you think are going to be in a Rose Bowl for a
- 10:207:00 PM local kick on a Friday night in LA against New Mexico
- 10:26That's. When that game is.
- 10:28Yes, it is a Friday night Big 10 network 7:00 PM local.
- 10:32Kick all the traffic. You know how many people you are
- 10:35going to bother showing up in LA on a Friday night for that?
- 10:38Well, I'll tell you where I'm going to be.
- 10:39I'm going to be watching that. There's two Big 12 tilts going
- 10:42on. Real conference games too.
- 10:44Well, one of them is. I don't think the K state game
- 10:46is, is it? I think I.
- 10:49Think you might be right. I think, but it's 2 conference
- 10:512. Yeah, 2 conference teams, yes,
- 10:54yeah. The other one of course is is
- 10:56Colorado and Houston. So that'll that'll be good.
- 10:59I didn't. Yeah, I'm looking at right now
- 11:01New Mexico at at UCLA. Good God.
- 11:04All right, so let's go. To the let's go.
- 11:05To the SCC. I'll, I'll start with you,
- 11:07Trent. Yeah, I think John Matier, is he
- 11:10the Heisman favorite this morning?
- 11:12Oh, probably the place to put him.
- 11:16Still a. Lot of work to be done, Sure,
- 11:18yes. But with what he's done,
- 11:20reclamating the offense after the issues that they saw as he's
- 11:23a good kid, yeah. I mean, he's like, he's one of
- 11:26those quarterback like, hey, he's king.
- 11:27Could he survive? And he's got a hideous throwing
- 11:30motion. I mean, it looks like Bernie
- 11:31Kozar with the side on crap, but it's effective, no doubt about
- 11:36it. I, I think that's a good
- 11:37question. My other take away that I had
- 11:39down from the SEC was something I just want to go with Bama.
- 11:45All right, 73 nothing for Bama. That's not going to cure.
- 11:50Anything. That's not going to cure
- 11:53anything. Perfect for Ty Simpson as he
- 11:56doesn't have an incompletion of the game.
- 11:58But all right, you get a week to dissect, to look back, and now
- 12:02you look forward. What is the temperature down
- 12:04there in Alabama? I don't think anybody is
- 12:07necessarily impressed with that. They're they're trying to some
- 12:10people are trying to spin it, you know, the 17 for 17, you
- 12:15know, the hey, Nick David never scored 73 points in his tenure
- 12:18here. You know, he could have.
- 12:20He just chose not to on several occasions.
- 12:23You know, there's there's the parallel because you remember
- 12:26Louisiana Monroe is the team that came in and Saban's first
- 12:29year came into Bryant Denny as he was kind of, you know,
- 12:32working through the trash that Mike Jewell left and won the
- 12:35game. So there's but listen, nobody
- 12:38here is really impressed and I don't think anybody's going to
- 12:40be terribly impressed if they, you know, handle Wisconsin this
- 12:44week, which I think they should. Everybody, everybody knows
- 12:48they've got Wisconsin this week. Better opponent, not as good as
- 12:51Florida State, better than a lot of Monroe.
- 12:53Then they got to buy a week and then, oh goodness, looky there
- 12:56they go to Athens. Now they're hoping to get, you
- 12:59know, GM Miller back and Keenan and some some really important
- 13:02pieces that they could have used.
- 13:04I think the overall impression, the effort was better, the focus
- 13:09was better. Obviously the execution was
- 13:10better than against Florida State.
- 13:12But I don't think anybody's really buying in to this based
- 13:16off the score he did. It's interesting because he did
- 13:19play all three quarterbacks in this game and he played a couple
- 13:21of them early. He says that was communicated to
- 13:24Simpson during the week. So you know that regardless of
- 13:29the score, he was going to play all three early.
- 13:32And he did. But yeah, it's I don't think
- 13:36anybody's really if if anybody is really making a bunch out of
- 13:39this, then I think I think they're foolish.
- 13:41And I think most Alabama fans know where the meat of this
- 13:45schedule really is. And that's when they get into
- 13:46conference play. And right now they're not going
- 13:49to be favored at Georgia. And I'll look out well.
- 13:51Both of Georgia's starting cornerbacks are out, though.
- 13:54That's why the numbers got in half this week.
- 13:56Tennessee opened at 7 and sound to 3 1/2.
- 13:59Yeah, and Tennessee is another team that, you know, with
- 14:02Aguilar, who's, you know, they now, you know, they beat
- 14:05Syracuse in Week 1 and then, you know, was it East?
- 14:08East Tennessee. Yeah.
- 14:09So I mean that's, you know, not. Snuck by him 72 to 17.
- 14:14Yeah, I mean, look, you'd rather you'd rather beat Josh Heiple
- 14:17than Billy Napier today. I think this is for sure but and
- 14:22that. Hey, South.
- 14:23Florida is good, give golds credit.
- 14:25Well, I was just saying, I mean, I put in a little text thing.
- 14:27Is the AAC more relevant than the I think, I think this
- 14:31conference is relevant guys, because South Florida, right,
- 14:35They've already beaten Boise. Here's what I hope doesn't
- 14:37happen. I think Florida is about to
- 14:39spiral, OK, because you look at this schedule, they go to my,
- 14:42they go to LSU, they go to Miami, they got an open day.
- 14:47They host Texas, they go to A&M, they host Mississippi State.
- 14:51That doesn't look easy. All of a sudden they've got
- 14:53Georgia, they go to Ole Miss, they have Tennessee and Florida
- 14:56State. That is as bad as it gets.
- 14:58That is a four win schedule right there.
- 15:01So what what I hope doesn't happen to South Florida.
- 15:04I hope they don't all of a sudden at the end of the year,
- 15:06they're like, well, that winner wasn't anything.
- 15:09Look how bad Florida. I hope that doesn't happen.
- 15:12But they go to Miami this week and if they could somehow make
- 15:17some noise down there. They are front and center in my
- 15:20opinion, in the in in the group of five conversation.
- 15:24And but right there is Tulane goes Tulane goes to Duke.
- 15:27This our host Duke this week. I'm sorry.
- 15:29They get Duke at home and then they go to Ole Miss.
- 15:31They don't play each other. These two teams don't play each
- 15:34other in regular season. So but both play Memphis.
- 15:36So I think the AAC has got some juice this year and I think it's
- 15:40those three teams. So.
- 15:41But you know, South Florida is really good.
- 15:44They're a lot better than people think.
- 15:45I think we should have learned that from the Boise game.
- 15:48Anybody who, you know, took Florida to cover 17 1/2 this
- 15:51week needs their head examined. But that was that was a good win
- 15:54down there. And you know, Florida again,
- 15:56though, some penalties, if you look at that, that last drive,
- 16:00you know, they had a chance to run some clock.
- 16:02He threw, he threw 2 passes and a run play.
- 16:07You know, there's another spitting penalty that you know
- 16:09that that got you know what is up with this?
- 16:12I mean, just stupid. I mean, come on, you know, that
- 16:14gave them 15 yards and you know, South Florida basically ran the
- 16:18last four minutes off the clock and kicked a chip shot.
- 16:20You'll go to win it in the swamp so.
- 16:22You mentioned pressure, you mentioned the ACC I mean,
- 16:25Clemson was night and day to beat.
- 16:27Troy had to come back. 16 Three. Unbelievable.
- 16:30Looked like they were going to be beat.
- 16:32Nader's are restless there. So it's just real quick,
- 16:34Virginia Tech or Vanderbilt, I guess we can finish our SCC.
- 16:38What? What?
- 16:39What is this more telling that Virginia Tech is really bad and
- 16:43the seat might be getting hot there.
- 16:44Or Diego Pava's done it again. The one you want that one.
- 16:49I'll take, I'll take probably I think this, listen, we saw it
- 16:53last year. Why do we think it's going to
- 16:54change this year, right? You know, they beat Alabama.
- 16:56They gave Texas all they wanted in Nashville.
- 17:00And this isn't what your Vanderbilt, OK?
- 17:03This is, I don't care how good or bad Virgin Tech wins.
- 17:06This is an ACC win on the road for them.
- 17:09OK, So however you want to spend that, you know, you talk about
- 17:13Virginia Tech, but we're talking again about Vanderbilt.
- 17:15That's a good win for them. I'm telling you guys, they're
- 17:18going to they're going to beat somebody.
- 17:21I think again this year, you always worry with them about
- 17:24death, right? You know, if they get obviously
- 17:27if the quarterback gets hurt, I think they've got no shot at
- 17:30some of these games. But if they go to South Carolina
- 17:33this week, that's I like, I really like South Carolina, but
- 17:37I think that's going to be a better game than people think.
- 17:39They got to go to Alabama, they got to go to Texas, they got to
- 17:43go to Tennessee. So, you know, the schedule's not
- 17:46doing them any favors this year. All those home games they got
- 17:48last year flipping. But I really, I like, I love
- 17:52Clark Lee or their coach. I've just and I love the
- 17:55quarterback. They might be South Carolina
- 17:58this week. I think it'll, yeah.
- 18:01I don't know what the spread is, but I would be.
- 18:04I'm tempted to take the points maybe.
- 18:06Yeah, I'm with you. All right.
- 18:07The last thing for both of you? Best team in college football.
- 18:11Trent is oh boy. Best team in college football is
- 18:16Ohio State I guess. OK best team in college football
- 18:21Bama is. Man, you just pulling these from
- 18:26nowhere here. I would, I wouldn't lean Ohio
- 18:30State, but I I might throw Oregon in there too.
- 18:33Oregon was I know that Oklahoma State is terrible, I get it
- 18:37right. But but they're they're really,
- 18:40really good in my opinion. I think A-Team like, you know,
- 18:44LSU, we've still got to see, right?
- 18:46Yeah. I.
- 18:47Think they're in the I think they're in the conversation.
- 18:50I agree and I'm interested to see what they do with Florida
- 18:53this week because that's. You know that's prime time,
- 18:55right? Yeah, it is.
- 18:57Yes, I believe that is correct. So is you Mass in Iowa, by the
- 19:00way. Good.
- 19:01Oh, good for you. Yeah.
- 19:02Get another TV teddy. DVR right there baby.
- 19:06That's that's a Sunday morning special, isn't?
- 19:09It. But yeah, I I know though it's,
- 19:12it's hard to tell, but it's, it's really hard to go against
- 19:15Ohio State. That's just they're just that
- 19:18good. Oregon impressed me.
- 19:19Oregon impressed me. Yeah.
- 19:21Moore's good. We'll see.
- 19:22Bam. We got to run, brother.
- 19:23We'll talk to you on Friday. Thank you buddy.
- 19:25Take care guys, good to. Talk to you, Bama.
- 19:27Bob Trent and I are recapping the week in college.
- 19:30Football a Week 3 proves to be much better.
- 19:33Yeah, except for the Big 10. And short of that Alabama,
- 19:35Wisconsin game, take a look at the rest of the Big 10 slate in
- 19:38front of me here. Well, you mentioned Indiana,
- 19:40Indiana State, that Friday night affair with UCLA against New
- 19:44Mexico, IOU Mass Marilyn Townsend, We got a conference
- 19:49game. Who the Ducks go to?
- 19:52Northwestern. And you know what?
- 19:53You know who's there? You know where they Big Noon
- 19:55kickoff? Is that Northwestern?
- 19:57Makes sense. Big Noon Kickoff Nebraska
- 20:00welcomes in Houston, Christian Oh God Michigan, Central
- 20:04Michigan, Ohio State, Ohio. Rutgers, Norfolk State.
- 20:09Good God. Penn State Villanova but
- 20:12basketball matchup Another conference matchup USC goes to
- 20:16Purdue Michigan State Youngstown, Illinois Western
- 20:20Michigan There's gotta be 1 Minnesota at.
- 20:23Cal, there you go with the quarterback with a long name,
- 20:26the hyphenated name. What?
- 20:27How do you Is he a freshman? Yes.
- 20:30Yes, that's a good game trip. What time is that?
- 20:33One that is late night. You will not see the end of
- 20:35that. You'll see the start.
- 20:37You'll see the start. Yeah.
- 20:38I'll let you know how it goes. What's the kid's name?
- 20:41Good God, he's got three names and it's a long, long name.
- 20:43His first? Name type is around his number.
- 20:45It does. Jeron something.
- 20:46Jeron, Kuwait. Segapoliti nailed it.
- 20:53Yeah, a lot of points. Scrabble points right there.
- 20:55Bill Seals next on Cyhawk, Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 20:58Sports Radio Network. Hi, Mory Condon, welcome back
- 21:08Iowa Sports Radio Network. We're with you until the top of
- 21:12the hour. Trans plays of the day.
- 21:14Mr. Monday night still to come. Let's get the Bill Seals.
- 21:17He was in the press box. Jack Tri Stadium for Psy Hawk.
- 21:21We've got document stick. Let's get Bill Seals as he joins
- 21:25us. Bill Trenton Kent, thank you for
- 21:27coming on. Good to talk to you.
- 21:28Bill, how are you? I'm doing great guys.
- 21:30How are you doing this lovely Monday afternoon?
- 21:33Absolutely couldn't be better, no doubt about it.
- 21:36Well, let's get into what we saw this past weekend, Bill.
- 21:39Here's my concern when it comes to Iowa State.
- 21:43And it's the running game and they're going to need a running
- 21:46game. I think Sam and Hanson, both
- 21:48nice players. I love Hanson's toughness.
- 21:51Sam has got the breakaway speed. I'm concerned about their
- 21:54ability to run the ball. Bill, is that being unfair?
- 21:59Well, I think that some, some folks would agree with you on
- 22:03that. The offensive line, they've
- 22:06graded out relatively well. I think in the pass block
- 22:10category. They didn't give up a sack
- 22:12against Iowa on Saturday. I thought that was a a good sign
- 22:17for that group. However, I mean, as you, you
- 22:20mentioned, Kenny, it has been a, a struggle for this group to run
- 22:23the ball from time to time. They, you know, they didn't
- 22:26really get that going on a consistent, they started off
- 22:30really well and then I I think that maybe once Iowa got a
- 22:34little read on that and they adjusted, they took that away.
- 22:38So yeah, that is going to be a concern I think going forward.
- 22:42And and maybe a Trevor Borer, once he comes back, maybe he
- 22:46bolsters that unit a little bit, but still no sign on on when
- 22:50we'll see him. No doubt that the defense came
- 22:53to play once again. And we know about Dom Orange,
- 22:56we've talked a ton about him. Marcus Deal continues to turn
- 22:59heads. You mentioned PFF, he was the
- 23:01top rated guy on that defense. He was outstanding in so many
- 23:05different ways. Not just what he does coming up
- 23:07and supporting, you know, against the run game, but good
- 23:10in coverage. He just does a little bit of
- 23:12everything. Take us back to the story of
- 23:14Marcus Neal, kind of how he got to Iowa State and and just what
- 23:17an incredible find he was. Well, that is a that is a pretty
- 23:21awesome story, Trent. I think we're going to dig into
- 23:24that probably a little bit with Campbell tomorrow as Neil will
- 23:28be one of the players that we get during tomorrow's media
- 23:32availability. And I did cover his recruitment
- 23:35from the very start. And it, it's a very interesting
- 23:38story because a lot of his tape, his first like 3 years of high
- 23:44school were at wide receiver. Now Iowa State, I don't think
- 23:48was totally sold on him playing that position.
- 23:51They got a little bit that things kind of slowed down.
- 23:54Maybe six months or so. He had taken all the visits like
- 23:57his junior year, things slowed down a little bit.
- 24:00You thought maybe he, well, he had an offer, but you thought
- 24:03maybe he wasn't going to be a tape in the long run.
- 24:06But Iowa State staff got some tape on him playing defense
- 24:11early on in his senior year and and I think what they saw on
- 24:15tape was the potential and we've seen him deliver on that very
- 24:19early in his career. So guess as they say, the rest
- 24:22is history. They got that senior year tape,
- 24:25offered him a reoffered him I think to play on the defensive
- 24:28side and there you go. Tamatoa McDonough was noticeable
- 24:34to say the very least, getting into the backfield.
- 24:36Getting to Gronowski, I thought by far his best game.
- 24:39He hasn't only played only three, but McDonough sure picked
- 24:43a a good time for him to play his best game as a Cyclone.
- 24:47And obviously Haycock and company want to see him to
- 24:50continue to make steps, but he certainly took some big ones
- 24:53this past weekend. Yeah, he got a lot of attention
- 24:56that that last drive of Iowa's, rightfully so.
- 24:59He had two sacks and two straight plays.
- 25:01But even before that, he had a couple of tackles for lost.
- 25:05He was a force in the run game, I think even before that final
- 25:10possession, also registered a quarterback hurry, had five
- 25:14tackles on the day, one of the leaders there.
- 25:17And you know, in that 335 defense, you don't see those 3
- 25:20lineman leading them in tackles very often.
- 25:23But I think that gives an idea the impact he had on that game
- 25:27Saturday. And Campbell talked a little bit
- 25:29about that in the post game as well, about how when you you go
- 25:33to an Ivy League school, it was the same thing they encountered
- 25:36with Jalen Travis as well. You got to go that full last
- 25:40season there to get your degree to graduate.
- 25:43So that entailed going a spring semester to Yale, wasn't able to
- 25:48join the Iowa State program really until the summer and then
- 25:51really ramp things up. And I think he's one that moving
- 25:54forward, forward, you're going to see him make even bigger
- 25:58splash plays and important games the the Cyclones are going to
- 26:01play in conference. You know, coming into the year,
- 26:03Bill, we talked a lot during the offseason with all these
- 26:06linebackers, all these guys with experience and kind of how
- 26:09you're going to figure out the rotation.
- 26:11It feels like it's going to be Caleb, Bacon, Cooper, Evil and
- 26:14then kind of filling in the gaps have have Bacon and Evil
- 26:17separated themselves from the rest of the pack.
- 26:21Yeah, I think so. You know, Brazina, I think it is
- 26:24going to be a factor in there as well.
- 26:27They're still kind of unsettled, though, I think at that Sam
- 26:30linebacker position that remains in flux.
- 26:34I believe Will McDonald only played like 8 or 9 snaps in that
- 26:39game against Iowa, if my memory serves me correctly.
- 26:42I would have figured he would have had a bigger role.
- 26:45You know, the, you know, the other outside backer, Bo, good
- 26:51one, had that pass an interference penalty earlier in
- 26:54the game. Didn't grade out particularly
- 26:57well. But he, I believe he played
- 26:58about twice the amount of snaps as McDonald did.
- 27:02So it'll be interesting to see. You probably won't see.
- 27:04You'll see a number of guys, I would imagine play against
- 27:07Arkansas State this week. They'll get into the bye week
- 27:10and then I think as they face Arizona that last Saturday and
- 27:14in September, you might kind of see these rotations become a
- 27:18little more established and kind of what they want to do moving
- 27:21forward. You guys mentioned grading out.
- 27:23That's Pro Football Focus is that we're getting these things.
- 27:26How did Trey Bell do? Because every time I watch Iowa
- 27:29State play, Trey Bell makes a play seemingly.
- 27:31How did he grade out? Because he made a couple.
- 27:33Of this last week. You know, he did really, he was
- 27:37he was an encouraging player in in that game.
- 27:41And as as we've seen Iowa State, the way they want to play with
- 27:44those cornerbacks, they're not it's not just going to be two
- 27:48guys on the field. And last year they had three or
- 27:50four. This year has the makings of
- 27:53three, maybe 4 if if Quentin Taylor makes a bigger impact
- 27:58moving forward. But yet Trey Bell played 22
- 28:01snaps in that game. They played 65 as a team.
- 28:04So about 1/3 of the plays he was in there.
- 28:09I think one thing really encouraging about him is his
- 28:12tackling ability as well. They asked those DBS to come up
- 28:17and tackle in space and you have to to play in that 335 and that
- 28:21was where Bell graded out the best was in tackling a 73.5 SA.
- 28:28Good sign there that he's tackling in space.
- 28:30And I think the coverage as he learns the defense and gets more
- 28:34reps on Saturdays, that's going to get even better as well.
- 28:37Got to see Chase Soul his first extended playing time play 26
- 28:41snaps in the game. I had a tough catch show over on
- 28:43the side that a defensive back broke up, but is this going to
- 28:47be kind of part of the plan now? I know he missed some time
- 28:49during camp, but it feels like he's going to be a piece of this
- 28:52offense going forward. Or are the training wheels
- 28:54coming off for the East Carolina transfer?
- 28:57Yeah, I think so as you as you mentioned kind of was the
- 29:02development there stalled a little bit just with the injury
- 29:05that they that the injuries or not real clear what those have
- 29:08been. They don't cover those as much.
- 29:11But yeah, since the spring and then even into a fall camp, I
- 29:14think limited a little bit with that.
- 29:16But really you you look at Jayden Higgins as well.
- 29:19This is the comparison that the coaches have made, too.
- 29:21He kind of faced similar growing pains early in his first season
- 29:26at Iowa State. And then, you know, we all know
- 29:29what he amounted to by the time things were over.
- 29:31And I think the potential is always there for so well, he's
- 29:35he's trending in the right direction as well with those 26
- 29:40snaps against a very good defense in Iowa.
- 29:43I think he's getting gaining the trust of that coaching staff to
- 29:47put him out there even more. And it's going to be a very
- 29:50competitive situation though, too, because I don't see S
- 29:53Gilson going anywhere overby. It's kind of been up and down
- 29:57with him. He had the big first game,
- 29:59disappeared in Game 2, played about the same and number of
- 30:03snaps so well and in the the third game.
- 30:07So it's going to be a very competitive situation moving
- 30:10forward with those outside wide receivers.
- 30:12Is there anybody in that, that position that's that's hurt that
- 30:16hasn't been able to see the field yet?
- 30:17Bill, because I'm with you on Overby's inconsistency.
- 30:20Who drives you nuts? Townsend and Sohel look like
- 30:23they're going to be, you know, is they more experienced?
- 30:26They'll get better. I'm with you on Eskelsen.
- 30:28Is there any wide receiver that maybe he might be waiting for
- 30:32his opportunity that is yet to? Come well.
- 30:35We've been waiting on Eli Green for a few years now.
- 30:38He did get in for 18 snaps against Iowa, just has not
- 30:43really established himself just yet.
- 30:46But I think inside with Xavier Townsend, that's a good that's a
- 30:50pretty good situation I think for the the staff with two
- 30:54established slot guys. Green had played that put most
- 30:58of his production has come at the FCS, but he's getting some
- 31:02opportunities, 18 snaps. Carson Brown didn't play against
- 31:07Iowa as well. So not sure if that was coach's
- 31:10decision type of thing or if there's an injury going on with
- 31:14him. But yeah, I mean that that seems
- 31:16to be the guys that we've mentioned.
- 31:19I think that's going to be the group here this season.
- 31:22Bill, you've watched a lot of quarterbacks play and, and
- 31:25Rocco, boy, he's just so cool under pressure.
- 31:27And it's something that a little bit different than the guy, the
- 31:30couple, couple quarterbacks before him, Brock Purdy, what
- 31:33sometimes he would fall into that pressure.
- 31:35Doesn't feel like you can never rattle Rocco back, that he's
- 31:37just so locked in. What is it about him, you know,
- 31:40is it his background, who his dad is, that kind of thing?
- 31:42But he just seems unflappable out there.
- 31:45Yeah, I think you're on to something there with just the
- 31:48way he grew up with his dad being a high level player in the
- 31:52NFL. And yeah, I mean that that just
- 31:55from the very start it seems like he's been he's been poised
- 32:00out there on on the field and he got some opportunities early in
- 32:04his career to play a little bit. I think that served him well
- 32:08once he got out there as a full time starter, was kind of thrust
- 32:11into it and, and and handled it handled it pretty well though.
- 32:15So I, I thought, and yeah, two years in now, 2 full years in
- 32:20now over 3000 yards passing. And gosh, from what we've seen
- 32:24so far, the numbers weren't great against Iowa, but I think
- 32:29again, you look at the intangibles and how many of
- 32:32those what was it about 62,000 ish at Jack Trice Stadium on
- 32:38Saturday when Iowa State got the ball with what 6 1/2 minutes
- 32:43left to go and the the game, what it was a score, what it was
- 32:47and how many of those were confident in what Rocco and that
- 32:51offense we're about to do. And now I'm sure enough they did
- 32:54it. He engineered a little bit of
- 32:56that, got him in in position for that can already turned out to
- 33:00be game-winning field goal. It was as he knocks it in for
- 33:04the second straight year from 54 yards away.
- 33:07Iowa State now sits at 3 and O. And here's one more tricky spot
- 33:11before the bye week. You go to Arkansas State.
- 33:14Now they're blown out by the Razorbacks over the weekend, but
- 33:16still weird road trip. We remember the weird road trip
- 33:20a couple years back that didn't go very well as they went out to
- 33:22Ohio. What do you know about the Red
- 33:25Wolves and what Iowa State's going to see coming up on
- 33:27Saturday afternoon about it? A lot on on the this segment is
- 33:33mobile or mobile quarterbacks has kind of hurt this defense a
- 33:37little bit in the past. We saw it a little bit a little
- 33:40bit from Gronowski in that in that game, he was able to to
- 33:44turn some of those losses into gains with his feet.
- 33:49They that the Cyclones did do a pretty good job, though, I felt
- 33:52against Avery Johnson in that Week 0 game.
- 33:54I think he only had about 21. But in the past, I think just a
- 33:58byproduct of that 335 defenses every now and then if you've got
- 34:02mobile quarterbacks, they can make make something out of
- 34:05nothing. Jalen Rayner the the QB one for
- 34:09the red Wolf see that happens to be the Hyatt well, by a good
- 34:12margin, the highest graded player according to PFF for the
- 34:16the red wolves just over 78 grade on offense.
- 34:20So he's pretty close to elite. And for that level, I think
- 34:24that's moving forward in the in the conference they're in, he's
- 34:28going to be a player that gets a lot of headlines at that level.
- 34:32So he's going to be someone to contend with.
- 34:35They've got also got a couple of offensive lineman, I think
- 34:38pretty decent couple wide receivers.
- 34:41Jalen Benelli, I think he was a transfer portal edition Hunter
- 34:45Summers. So yeah, the skill players
- 34:48there, I think that that's those are guys that the the defensive
- 34:52staff's going to be honed in on. Then you look to the defensive
- 34:56side of the ball, a couple of those interior defensive lineman
- 35:00also graded out pretty well. So again, that could that could
- 35:03pose some problems to this run game.
- 35:05I think the Cyclones in contest like this, they're going to try
- 35:09and get that established, but the Red Wolves pretty good up
- 35:12the middle. Also, Terry Kirksey, the inside
- 35:15linebacker, he is making plays all over the field over a 90
- 35:20grade and run defense. So again, this is a game where
- 35:24Iowa State going to be tested on that offensive line to open up
- 35:28holes rushing the ball. Bill Seals.
- 35:31You can see it all at cyclonereport.com, part of the
- 35:34Rivals Network. Bill, out of time for today.
- 35:36Appreciate it as always and we will talk to you again next
- 35:40week. Looking forward to it.
- 35:42Have a good week guys. Yep.
- 35:43Thanks, Bill. Bill joining us here as he does
- 35:45each and every Monday with a look back at Iowa State and what
- 35:48we saw over the weekend. Final time out.

- 36:22Condon household. Hillary kind of back with you

- 36:27bit earlier as he's heading over to Prairie Meadows.
- 36:30A race call in happening for him here this afternoon.
- 36:33So it's me for the final minute of the show and Mr. Monday
- 36:37night, brought to you by Circus Sports.
- 36:38Give me the Vikings. Gross.
- 36:44I love the Bears in this spot all offseason long, but once it
- 36:47gets to it, I just can't believe the most inept organization.
- 36:50Well, the most one of the most inept organizations out there.
- 36:54I'm going to take the Vikings, lay the 1 1/2, play the under in
- 36:57this game and also couple of fun props.
- 36:59I'm playing any time. Touchdown score.
- 37:02How about Adam Thielen back in the purple?
- 37:06We're going to grab him half unit on that 1 + 390.
