Transcript
- 0:00I want to welcome you back to our second night of Summer of
- 0:04Psalms. And tonight, we'll be looking at
- 0:05Psalm 22 while you're turning to Psalm 22.
- 0:09I just want to remind you of that wonderful story in Luke 24
- 0:13that we call the disciples on the Emmaus Road.
- 0:16The two disciples were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus Road.
- 0:22And they were talking with each other and Along Comes Jesus
- 0:25Christ. Now, they did not recognize in
- 0:27Jesus and hid it from him, and they were talking about Jesus
- 0:31arrest his crucifixion trial, resurrection, and Jesus asked
- 0:35him, what are you talking about? And they looked at him and says,
- 0:38don't, you know, that? Are you the only one in all of
- 0:41Israel? Who doesn't know what's happened
- 0:43in the last few days and they would explain to Jesus, the
- 0:46things that had happened ending with the empty tomb?
- 0:50Then Jesus looks at them. In Luke 24, verse 25 and says o
- 0:55foolish, ones and slow of heart to believe all that.
- 0:59The prophets have spoken. Was it not necessary that the
- 1:02Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory
- 1:06and beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to
- 1:10them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself and
- 1:16then later on in verse 32, when they had gone into the room and
- 1:20Jesus had vanished. They said Jesus opened to us the
- 1:24scriptures. I wonder what scriptures Jesus
- 1:27held that first Bible study after the resurrection.
- 1:31I'm sure he shared Genesis 3:15 about.
- 1:34He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel
- 1:38probably shared Deuteronomy 18, 18 says I will raise up for them
- 1:41a prophet. Like you from all their
- 1:43brothers, I'm positive. He would have shared Isaiah 53,
- 1:48the whole chapter, but Isaiah G36 as all we like, sheep have
- 1:52gone astray and the lord has laid on upon him.
- 1:55The iniquity of us all but also know that he would have gone to
- 1:59the Psalms he would have gone to Psalms 68 Verse 18 to talk about
- 2:04Christ's Ascension, he would have gone to Psalms 41, 9 to
- 2:09talk about Christ's betrayal. He would have gone to Psalms 45,
- 2:15verses, 6 and 7 to talk about, Christ's deity.
- 2:19He would have gone to Psalms 8, verses 5 to 6, to talk about
- 2:22Christ exultation. He would have gone to Psalms to
- 2:27verse 6 in Psalms 89 Verse 18 and 19 to talk about Christ
- 2:32kingship, he would have gone to Psalms to, again, to talk about,
- 2:35Christ's lordship, He'd gone to Psalms 41, verses 6 to 8 to talk
- 2:41about The Obedience of Christ. He would have gone to the Psalms
- 2:45110 verse 4 to talk about. Christ's priesthood, he would
- 2:50have gone to Psalm 16:10 to remind him that the Messiah
- 2:54would rise from the dead Resurrection.
- 2:56He would have gone to psalms 27 to talk about Christ.
- 3:00Sonship He would have gone to Psalm 69 verse 9 to talk about
- 3:04Christ's suffering and he had gone to Psalms 1, 18 verses 22
- 3:10to 23 to talk about Christ's Supremacy and I'm 100% sure that
- 3:17he would have taken them to Psalm 22 verses 1 to 22 because
- 3:23it's the entire song is about Christ's death and the Triumph
- 3:28of Jesus Christ. There are other Psalms like
- 3:31Psalm 72, Psalm 102 and some 109 that we consider Messianic
- 3:37Psalms Dietrich Dietrich. Bonhoeffer that great German
- 3:41Theologian who Hitler executed. Right at the end of World War
- 3:45Two. He said Christ is the secret of
- 3:49the song. Now I read that 10 years ago, 15
- 3:53years ago, I don't think I really completely grasp that
- 3:57concept till I study this Psalm 22 and I hope you'll see that
- 4:00tonight. Listen to what some commentators
- 4:03said. One said this Psalm is beyond
- 4:05all others, the psalm and the cross, it may have been repeated
- 4:09word by word by our Lord. When hanging on the cross, it
- 4:14begins with my God, my God. Why hast Thou, forsaken?
- 4:18Me and the ends with According, to some, it is finished.
- 4:23It's a photograph of our Lord's satis hours and the record of
- 4:28his dying wounds listen to what Jay Vernon McGee said.
- 4:32In the gospels. It's recorded the historical
- 4:35fact of, Christ's death, and some of the events, which
- 4:40attended his crucifixion. But only in Psalm 22.
- 4:45Do we see the thoughts and emotions that Jesus Christ felt
- 4:51are recorded. It is belief by many scholars
- 4:55that actually the Lord. Jesus Will on the cross said,
- 4:59the entire Psalm 22. And then Spurgeon said we should
- 5:05read this Psalm reverently putting off our shoes from our
- 5:10feet as Moses did at the burning bush for if there be Holy Ground
- 5:16anywhere in Scripture, it is this song.
- 5:20I won't make you take your shoes off tonight, but we're going to
- 5:23read Psalm 22 now. Psalm 22, if you're there to the
- 5:28choirmaster, according to the door of the Dawn, a Psalm of
- 5:32David, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 5:37Why are you so far from saving me from the words of my
- 5:41groaning. Oh my God, I Cry by day, but you
- 5:45do not answer and by night but I find No Rest yet.
- 5:49You Are Holy enthroned. On the Praises of Israel in, you
- 5:54are father's, trusted. It.
- 5:55They trusted and you delivered them to you.
- 5:58They cried and were rescued in you.
- 6:01They trusted and were not put to shame.
- 6:04But I am a worm and not a man scorned by mankind and despised
- 6:09by the people all who see me mock me, they make mouse at me.
- 6:14They wag their heads, he trusts in the Lord, let him deliver
- 6:18him. Let him rescue him for, he
- 6:21Delights in him. Yet you are?
- 6:24He who took me from the womb you made me trust you at my mother's
- 6:28breasts on you, I was cast from my birth and from my mother's
- 6:32womb, you have been my God, be not far from me for trouble is
- 6:38near and there is none to help many bulls.
- 6:41Encompass. Me strong Bulls of Bashan.
- 6:44Surround me, they open wide, their mouths at me like a raving
- 6:48and roaring lion. I am poured out like water and
- 6:52all my bones. Or out of Joy.
- 6:54My heart is like Wax it is melted within my breast, my
- 6:58strength is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue sticks to
- 7:01my jaws, you lay me in the dust of death, for dogs, and Compass
- 7:07meet a company of evildoers. In circles me they have pierced
- 7:11my hands and my feet, I can count all my bones they stare
- 7:16and gloat over me. They divided my garments among
- 7:19them. And for my clothing, they cast
- 7:21lots, But You O, Lord. Lord do not be far off.
- 7:25Oh, you my help come quickly to my Aid deliver my soul from The
- 7:29Sword. My precious life, from the power
- 7:31of the dog. Save me from the mouth of a
- 7:34lion. You have rescued me from the
- 7:36horns of the wild oxen, I will tell of your name to my
- 7:40brothers. In the midst of the
- 7:41congregation. I will praise you.
- 7:44You who fear the Lord praise him?
- 7:46All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him and stand in awe of
- 7:50him. All you offspring of Israel for
- 7:52he is Despised for abhorred, the Affliction of The Afflicted and
- 7:56he has not hidden his face from them, but he has heard, when he
- 8:00cried to him from, you comes my praise and in the great
- 8:04congregation, my vows, I will perform before those who fear
- 8:08Him The Afflicted, she'll eat and be satisfied, those who seek
- 8:12Him, shall praise the Lord, may your hearts live forever.
- 8:15All the ends of the Earth shall remember and turn to the Lord,
- 8:18all the families of the Nations shall worship before you for
- 8:22kingship. Belongs to the Lord and He rules
- 8:25over the nation's all the prosperous of yours shall eat
- 8:28and worship before him shall bow.
- 8:30Down all, who go down to the dust.
- 8:33Even the one who could not keep himself alive, Prosperity Shall
- 8:37Serve him, it shall be told of the Lord to the coming
- 8:40generation. They shall come and Proclaim his
- 8:43righteousness to a people yet, unborn that he has done it.
- 8:48Let's pray, Father in heaven. We love you and thank you for
- 8:50this beautiful Wednesday night as we Open Psalm 22.
- 8:54Father may we learn more about you Jesus Christ the Holy
- 8:57Spirit. May we leave here today knowing
- 9:00more of you and what it is we are to do in Jesus name.
- 9:03Amen. The type of Psalm I already
- 9:06mentioned, it's a Messianic. Psalm some would say it's quoted
- 9:1013 times in the New Testament, one commentator believes,
- 9:14there's as many as thirty three prophecies that may be going a
- 9:17little too far, but it's a Messianic, Psalm the context of
- 9:21the psalm where it's placed is very important.
- 9:24Psalms 22, 23 and 24 are at rheology Trilogy.
- 9:30Psalms 22 is the Good Shepherd dying for the Sheep.
- 9:34Psalms 23, which I'm sure you all know is the great Shepherd
- 9:38who lives for the sheep and Psalms 24 is the chief Shepherd
- 9:44who returns, in glory to reward his sheep.
- 9:47So Psalms 22 is past work. Psalms 23 is the present work
- 9:52and Psalms 24 is the future work.
- 9:55There's a superscription on the psalm to the choirmaster
- 9:59according to do of the Don, a Psalm of David, we really don't
- 10:03know what that means. And it may just be the name of a
- 10:05tune by the chief musician. As I mentioned last week, quite
- 10:09a few of the superscriptions. We really don't know what they
- 10:12mean. Now, history of the song.
- 10:15Now, when you read psalms like this, it's by David.
- 10:18So normally like last week Psalm 11, it was about David and we
- 10:22know probably it was about David's trouble in Saul's court.
- 10:26But here most commentators I say most Say, it has nothing to do
- 10:33with David's life because there's nothing in the history
- 10:37of David that we have that can account for the agony described
- 10:41in the psalm, the intense suffering here, described isn't
- 10:45about a sick man or a soldier in battle, but it's basically of a
- 10:50criminal being executed the writer of Hebrews quote, Psalm
- 10:5522 as the words of Jesus Christ himself.
- 10:59And when you read Acts, T, it calls David a prophet.
- 11:04So, I believe that David here is riding as a prophet, describing
- 11:08the agony of the coming Messiah and the suffering on the cross.
- 11:13So I believe it is all about. Jesus Christ.
- 11:17You have an outline, I hope you got today or picked it up out
- 11:19there, there's seven points and on the back of that outline, if
- 11:23you see, dr. William Barak, the professor
- 11:26emeritus of the Masters Seminary made a little chart from his
- 11:29study on Psalm 22. You can take that home and look
- 11:32at it and you can see the, the gospel accounts, the times, and
- 11:38then quite often not all the time, but quite often Psalm 22
- 11:42has a reference to those accounts.
- 11:44So I'll let you study that more. But dr.
- 11:47Barrick did, but let's look at our seven points tonight,
- 11:50there's really two sections in this song, Some, I'm sorry,
- 11:54verse 12. 21 is a cry for help verse 12. 21 is a Cry for help
- 12:02and in Psalms 22 to Psalms 31r a praise from the cross.
- 12:09So two sections, but I broken down into seven points tonight,
- 12:13let's begin with point. A Christ separation from God,
- 12:16verses one, and two, two points here.
- 12:20Spurned, my God, verse 1 and Silence from God verse 2, you're
- 12:25all familiar with verse 1. The first some first, the
- 12:29psalmist prophesized that the Messiah would be spurned by God.
- 12:34It begins with the he begins the song with probably the most
- 12:38anguished cry in human history. The song begins with an
- 12:42agonizing Prairie, we know this verse because it's the fourth
- 12:47sing of the seven sayings that we have.
- 12:50On the cross. Matthew 27:46 says about the
- 12:55ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, Eli, Eli
- 13:00Lema, sabachthani. That is my God.
- 13:04My God. Why have you forsaken me?
- 13:08An exact quotation of Psalms 22 1 in John 10?
- 13:13Jesus said, I am the John 10 verse 30, Jesus said, I and the
- 13:18father are one. When I go through the Book of
- 13:21John, which I'm studying in my quiet time.
- 13:23Now, I recorded 91 times that Jesus calls, god, father,
- 13:29father, father, he always calls God his father but only here.
- 13:37Does he say my God, Something's Happened.
- 13:40God. Turned his back on his son,
- 13:43while Jesus Christ was on the cross.
- 13:45There was a separation as never before in the history of the
- 13:48world and will never be. Again, to be forsaken by God
- 13:53means to have the light of God's countenance and the sense of his
- 13:57presence withdrawn, which is what happened to Jesus, as he
- 14:01suffered the wrath of God against sin for us.
- 14:05Let's look at number 2, verse 2 Silence from God.
- 14:09Why was Jesus spurned by God and God silent.
- 14:13It's an agonizing question from Jesus.
- 14:15It's a cry from the cross. The only possible answer is that
- 14:20Jesus must have been bearing the sins of the world on that cross
- 14:24during those three hours of Darkness.
- 14:27What separated Jesus from God, was my sin, your sins, and all
- 14:32the sins of the world Ibaka. Kkuk 1:13 says, God's eyes are
- 14:38purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong.
- 14:43Romans 5:8 says that God showed his love to us while we were
- 14:47sinners Christ died for us. One commentator said it, seems
- 14:52that. God, who answers the prayers of
- 14:55sinful? Men is not answering the prayer
- 14:59of the sinless. Messiah Warren, where's be said
- 15:03for our sake Christ was Forsaken by God that we might never be
- 15:08forsaken. We cannot be forsaken because
- 15:12the Savior was forsaken in our place.
- 15:15We cannot be forsaken because his promise is to never leave us
- 15:20or forsake us Hebrews 13:5. We cannot be forsaken because
- 15:25his Abiding and eternal presence with us, Matthew 28:20.
- 15:30We cannot be forsaken because of his promise to work all things.
- 15:35For the good of those who are called according to his purpose,
- 15:38Romans 8:28 in spite of all our circumstances and feelings.
- 15:43Remember, God will not forsake you but he did forsake his son.
- 15:49What do we learn from here in these first?
- 15:51Two verses Jesus was forsaken so that you and I would never be
- 15:56forsaken. God punished his own son, as if
- 16:00his son had committed every Wicked sin ever done by every
- 16:04sinner who would ever Of it was if Jesus is this the father
- 16:08abandoned his own son, God loved his son but he turned away from
- 16:13him. As he punished his son on the
- 16:15cross, for the sins of the world, Jesus felt the pain and
- 16:20we received Jesus righteousness. The question is why, why would
- 16:24the holy sinless? Son of God.
- 16:26In der this horrible suffering for three hours of Darkness.
- 16:30Well, that's the next point point B Christ, strength from
- 16:34God. Verses 3 to 5 and verse 3, says
- 16:37it all yet, You Are. Holy Christ is talking to God,
- 16:43the father. So some point one God is.
- 16:46Holy God is Holy righteous and just that means he must punish
- 16:53sin and wherever he finds it. God cannot Overlook sin, the
- 16:59love of God. Desired salvation For All
- 17:01Mankind, but the Holiness of God.
- 17:05That the wages of sin be punished.
- 17:08God is Holy and it necessitated that that there be a sacrifice.
- 17:14And at some point to Jesus Christ was sinless.
- 17:17The Lord Jesus Christ was sinless.
- 17:20He took our sin upon himself. He voluntarily, took the
- 17:24responsibility to pay the penalty of sins, for the sin of
- 17:28the world. The debt.
- 17:29We owed was charged to Christ's account now God can forgive
- 17:34sinners. The holy and just demands.
- 17:37That sin be punished, have been met the beloved Son, became our
- 17:41sin Bearer. My favorite verse in the New
- 17:43Testament, is second Corinthians 5:21, and you all know it.
- 17:47It says, for our sake, he God made him Jesus to be sin who
- 17:54knew no sin. So that in him, we might become
- 17:58the righteousness of God. God is holy Jesus Christ is
- 18:01sinless. And then in verse 4, the
- 18:04Holiness of Men. Three times you have the word
- 18:07trusted trusted and Trust in there in the past Israel.
- 18:12Trust of the Lord and God delivered him.
- 18:15Jesus at his darkest hour is strengthening by remembering
- 18:19God's faithfulness to the children of Israel.
- 18:22Moses, Abraham and David God always showed himself faithful
- 18:26to those in the past, you trusted him.
- 18:29So when we feel that God has abandoned us, when we are at our
- 18:33weakest, we need to remember the faithfulness of God.
- 18:35And God turned his back on his son, because in his Holiness, he
- 18:39must punish sin. Not the sinless son, but our
- 18:44sin. Let's look at Point C Christ.
- 18:47Scorn from the cross and two points there.
- 18:50He's reduced below a man verse 6 and ridiculed by the people
- 18:56versus 78. Verse 6 says, but I am a warm
- 19:02and not a man scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
- 19:07Now, the psalmist is going to prophesied that the Messiah
- 19:09would endure insults ridicule mocking, that would make the
- 19:15Messiah seem less than a human. And here, you have the first, a
- 19:19mini animal metaphors in the psalm.
- 19:22It's a reference to a helpless frail animal.
- 19:24That is often crushed. We Crush worms.
- 19:27But it's also interesting, Henry, Morris and a few other
- 19:30commentators make the case that this is not the normal Hebrew
- 19:34word for warmer. It's a special word for a warm,
- 19:39that's called the Crimson word that they would get the coloring
- 19:43Scarlett from to die cloth. So they literally would crush
- 19:47this worm, the Scarlet, warm to get Scarlet.
- 19:51So to yield that Die. The lowly worm had to be
- 19:54crushed. Isaiah 53:5, prophesied says he
- 19:59was crushed for our iniquities. Christ was crushed.
- 20:03I'd like what? Charles Spurgeon said, what a
- 20:05contrast between, I am Yahweh and I am a worm.
- 20:12Another one of the prophecies that the Messiah would be
- 20:15disfigured by his enemies and not even look human.
- 20:19Isaiah 52:14 says his Was so marred beyond human semblance
- 20:25and is formed beyond the children of mankind, you know,
- 20:28we don't put crosses of Jesus up in our church, but when you see
- 20:31them generally, they're fairly pretty right?
- 20:34But the truth is, Jesus was naked on that cross and he was
- 20:37bloodied and battered beyond recognition.
- 20:40They had beat him so bad number two, he was ridiculed by the
- 20:44people versus seven and eight first.
- 20:46He was mocked in verse 7. And in verse 8, he was insulted.
- 20:51It says all who seek me mock me. They make their mouths at me.
- 20:56They wag their heads, one of the amazing things about Psalms 22
- 21:00is the fact, it foretells, the exactly what the gospels would
- 21:04record about Jesus, and in Matthew, 27 39, it says, as
- 21:10Jesus on the cross and says, and those who pass by derided him,
- 21:15wagging their heads exactly what Psalm 22 verse 7 says.
- 21:20And then it prophesied that the Messiah would be insulted in
- 21:24verse 8. You have this mocking sentence,
- 21:26he trusts in the Lord, let him deliver him.
- 21:29Let him rescue him for. He Delights in him.
- 21:33So another amazing thing about Psalm 22 and his prophecy is the
- 21:36fact that it for told exactly what Christ's enemies would say.
- 21:41And you want to turn to Matthew 27, you can or you just recorded
- 21:46Matthew 27 verse 40 says, And this is what the evil, the
- 21:51religious leaders of scribes. The Pharisees are saying that
- 21:53Jesus, when they're looking up on the cross, it says, you who
- 21:57would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save
- 22:01yourself. If you are the Son of God come
- 22:04down from the cross. So also the chief priests the,
- 22:08scribes the elders, mock him saying, he saved others, he
- 22:12cannot save himself, he is the king of Israel.
- 22:15Let him come down now from the cross and we will Believe in
- 22:19him, he trusts in God, let God deliver him.
- 22:22Now, if he desires him for, he said, I am the Son of God, so
- 22:29the priest and many of the people looking up, at Jesus on
- 22:32the cross. They probably knew Psalm 22,
- 22:35most Jews would know, all 150 of the Psalms they did everything.
- 22:40While Jesus was doing his ministry to try to disprove his
- 22:43claims of being the Messiah, but here, actually their lips.
- 22:49The prophecy of Psalm 22. That Christ was indeed, the
- 22:53Messiah. Let's look at Point D Christ
- 22:56submission to God in verses 9, and 10 in these two verses.
- 23:00You have the words you you I think in this Psalm you have the
- 23:03word you 25 times, but here it says yet you who took me from
- 23:08the womb you made me trust at my mother's breast, commentators,
- 23:12debate and argue about what these two verses mean.
- 23:15But I believe that Christ is acknowledging that God has Been
- 23:19with him. Since birth birth is human
- 23:22birth, God protected, him at Birth.
- 23:24God delivered him from Harrods attempt to slaughter him when
- 23:28God gave a bit a dream for Joseph and Mary to go to Egypt.
- 23:33So, and his beginning with God, you know, he says on you, I was
- 23:36in verse 10. I was cast from my birth from my
- 23:39mother's womb, you have been my God.
- 23:41You know, I helpless newborn baby is is totally dependent.
- 23:45Christ is looking up to God as only helper who can help him
- 23:49during every moment of Christ's life, God had been his God and
- 23:52Father and sustained him Christ has a memory of God's
- 23:56faithfulness in the past. Now while he's suffering, he's
- 23:59asking, will God be faithful to me now.
- 24:03I can rely upon the father but I want to get the point e.e.,
- 24:07pointy, Christ's suffering from God.
- 24:09And I think in your outline you can see like there's like nine
- 24:12sub-points. This is the meat of the message.
- 24:15This is the point that just stuns me and blows me away.
- 24:19You know the deity of Jesus Christ is being attacked today.
- 24:22Like never before. The homosexuals are saying,
- 24:25Jesus never spoke about homosexuality.
- 24:29I actually watched a video last week that a guy said that, Jesus
- 24:33Christ. Never existed which kind of
- 24:35shocked me because there are actually 29 books outside the
- 24:39Bible that reference Jesus. For example, Josephus the Jewish
- 24:43historian writes extensively about a man called Jesus.
- 24:47Now that doesn't prove he's God but to deny Jesus.
- 24:51So I remember in college, we had a, we had a chart that said, did
- 24:56Jesus claimed to be God. So if he didn't make that claim,
- 25:00then it's just a legend as this guy on this YouTube video.
- 25:03Was claiming, it's just a legend.
- 25:05But if Jesus claimed to be God, then it is his claim true or
- 25:09false? Well, if it's a false claim and
- 25:12he didn't know it's false, then people would call Jesus a
- 25:15lunatic. But if he knew it was false,
- 25:18then some people would call him to be a liar.
- 25:20Like the Pharisees would call him a liar, but if Jesus claimed
- 25:24to be God and he made the claim and that claim is true, we know
- 25:28he is Lord, he's not a legend, he's not a lunatic, he's not a
- 25:33Liar, and he's not a Lord. Why do I bring that little chart
- 25:35up about Lord, liar, lunatic and Legend.
- 25:39Well, I wish every man and woman in the world would read the next
- 25:43few verses in 11 to 18 and I wish that would make them come
- 25:47and bow down at the cross and believe in Jesus Christ.
- 25:51I am a Christian today because the resurrection of Jesus
- 25:54Christ, the tomb is empty. That proof to me.
- 25:57Jesus Christ, rose from the dead, and I know all rise from
- 25:59the dead when I die, but the second reason II.
- 26:03My I know positively I'm a Christian is because of all the
- 26:06Prophecies of the Bible prove to me that the Bible is the very
- 26:10words of God and verses 11:18 here are some of the most
- 26:14remarkable verses of scripture ever written because they're
- 26:18describing in detail and event. That would take place a thousand
- 26:23years later. It's an accurate description of
- 26:26crucifixion written when they didn't even do crucifixion.
- 26:31The Roman Empire was not even in existence who introduced that
- 26:35cruel form of execution. But here in Psalm 22, we have a
- 26:40picture of a man dying by crucifixion in verses 11 to 18.
- 26:46So let's look at it. Number one, his anticipated Agni
- 26:49verse 11 says, be not far from me for trouble is near there is
- 26:54None to help and the prophecy that the Messiah would be all
- 26:58alone hanging on the cross. Marked 1450 says, and they all
- 27:04left him and fled all the disciples left him.
- 27:08It was one thing for Judas to betray Christ, but all the
- 27:11disciples fled. I know, John did come back at
- 27:14the cross Christ wasn't just abandoned by the father when he
- 27:18hung on the cross. But he was abandoned by his
- 27:20disciples. Number two.
- 27:23His wife surrounded verse 12. Many bulls, Encompass.
- 27:26Me. Strong Bulls of Bashan.
- 27:28Surround me here. We have a prophesy against the
- 27:31abuse that the Messiah would encounter.
- 27:34We have the second animal metaphor in this Psalm, strong
- 27:38Bulls refer to strength, right? Well, but Sean is today is where
- 27:43we know the Golan Heights. Remember Israel, captured?
- 27:47The Golan Heights. And I think in the 1973
- 27:49arab-israeli war and its high It's typography receives more
- 27:54rain than the rest of Israel so it produces better grass for
- 27:58grazing, the cattle. So, the Bulls of Bashan, were
- 28:01known to be bigger stronger and more vicious.
- 28:05So the emphasis here is on verbal abuse, the hostile crowd,
- 28:09they they cried crucify him, crucify him, the religious
- 28:14leaders Spilled Out their vile hatred towards him Roman
- 28:17soldiers, mercifully mock him enjoying another execution while
- 28:21Christ. Surrounded and all alone at that
- 28:23cross number three, his safety threatened.
- 28:27It says they open wide, their mouths at me like a raving and
- 28:31roaring lion. So we have the third metaphor of
- 28:34animals here, a roaring lion, and you all know from National
- 28:37Geographic that Lions only Roar win.
- 28:40When they capture their prey, they Roar, the Pharisees, in the
- 28:44priests had finally captured Jesus.
- 28:48They had tried to capture him, they had tried to kill him up to
- 28:51eight. Times, I believe in Matthew,
- 28:53Mark, Luke and John try to throw him off a cliff.
- 28:56They tried to capture him. So this first refers to their
- 29:00viciousness, they're described as raving and roaring Lions
- 29:05point number four, his bones disjointed.
- 29:09Two things here. The Messiah is going to be
- 29:11dehydrated and he's going to be having some of those long page.
- 29:16He's going to be dislocated dehydrated dislocated.
- 29:20So you have the prophecy that the Messiah would suffer
- 29:22dehydration and you all know in the third saying, of the seven
- 29:27recorded in the gospels, in John 1928, it says after this, Jesus
- 29:32knowing that all was now finished said to fulfill the
- 29:35scripture. I thirst.
- 29:38So, When they're hanging on the cross, they would be very
- 29:40thirsty. And so, he's poured out like
- 29:42water. The second thing, it says all,
- 29:45my boy bones are out of joint so when they're hanging on a cross,
- 29:49you have two spikes in your arms.
- 29:51You have spikes in your feet but to breathe, the man crucified
- 29:57would have to lift up very painfully otherwise he'd
- 30:00suffocate. So at some point the joints in
- 30:04the shoulder blades and different parts of the body
- 30:07would start to rip from Attendance.
- 30:09Crucifixion was just a horrible horrible thing.
- 30:12So it says all my bones bones are out of joint swen
- 30:16commentator. Said the Christ who holds all
- 30:19things together Colossians 1:17 had all his joints dislocated
- 30:26Number 5. It says his heart melted.
- 30:30My heart is like Wax. It's melted within my heart.
- 30:34So, here it's a Prophecy of the Messiah is emotionally broken.
- 30:38His Vitality is gone, you know, he was so weak.
- 30:41He couldn't even Carry the Cross Beam down the road.
- 30:45Remember, in the garden when Jesus was sweating drops of
- 30:47blood, remembering knowing what was coming.
- 30:50So he's just emotionally broken here.
- 30:52Number 6, verse 15. His strength is gone.
- 30:56Now, it says that my strength is dried up like a potsherd.
- 31:00My tongue sticks to my jaws, you lay me in the dust of death.
- 31:04He's physically exhausted. He's thirsty.
- 31:07The one who gives living water in John 4 was dried up like a
- 31:11broken clay pot and then ultimately it's God's doing.
- 31:15It says you lay me in the dust of death.
- 31:18That's a referent acts 2:23. First Corinthians. 5:21 talk
- 31:22about the prophecy of the burial of Jesus that he's going to be
- 31:25late. Dust of death and Matthew 27,
- 31:29verse has 59 to 60. It says, and Joseph took the
- 31:33body and wrapped it in a clean shroud and laid it in his own
- 31:37new tomb, which he had cut in Iraq, and he rolled a great
- 31:41Stone to the entrance of the Tomb and went away number seven,
- 31:46his body pierced for dogs, Encompass me, a band of evil
- 31:50doers in circles mean. So before we get to the park,
- 31:54the last part of her 16 about the Seing.
- 31:56You have the fourth, a no metaphor here and it's dogs dogs
- 32:01in that time was a common name for Gentiles and especially the
- 32:05Romans who they hate it. It's likened a hunting dogs,
- 32:09hunting dogs, would chase a fox or a rabbit and they would
- 32:13surround him here. The hunting dogs have surrounded
- 32:16Christ on the cross and then verse 16 says they have pierced.
- 32:20My hands and feet, here's the prophecy of the type of death
- 32:25that the Messiah Have by piercing and just so, you know,
- 32:28200 years before Christ came, there was a translation of the
- 32:33Bible called the Greek Septuagint.
- 32:35It has this exact phrase to, they have pierced, my hands and
- 32:38feet it describes the exact method of Jesus death after the
- 32:43resurrection. Remember, when Christ said to
- 32:45the disciples, see my hands. See my feet touch me for a
- 32:50spirit. Does not have Flesh and Bones.
- 32:52So we know that he was pierced through his hands through his
- 32:55feet. Feet.
- 32:57Let's look at number Point. Number eight, his Bones Exposed
- 33:00and this is really important, I can count all my bones, they
- 33:04stare and gloat over me. Now, when a man was executed on
- 33:07the cross, they could live up to 30 hours in the cross Birds
- 33:12would come often and pick their flesh.
- 33:14But you remember when Jesus was crucified, it was the day of
- 33:19preparation, the Sabbath preparation.
- 33:21So in John 19, if you want to turn their, write it down John
- 33:25night. Team verse 31, it says, since it
- 33:29was the day of preparation so that the bodies would not remain
- 33:33on the cross. On the Sabbath.
- 33:34The Jews asked pilate that their legs might be broken, and that
- 33:40they might be taken away. So understand that, as a thief
- 33:43is on the cross, he's lifting up his legs to try to breathe.
- 33:46Otherwise, it'll suffocate. So they want to get them down
- 33:50from the cross because the Sabbath.
- 33:51So they say, break the legs. So the soldier came and broke
- 33:55the legs of of the first thief and that of the other Thief who
- 33:59had been crucified with him, but when they came to Jesus, they
- 34:04saw that he was already dead and they did not break his legs.
- 34:08But one of the soldiers, pierced his side with a spear and at
- 34:12once there came out blood and water, he who saw it has borne
- 34:17witness. His testimony is true and he
- 34:20knows that he is telling the truth that you also May believe.
- 34:24And verse 36 says for, These things took place, that the
- 34:28scriptures might be fulfilled. That Psalms 22 verse 17, not one
- 34:34of his bones will be broken. And again, another scripture
- 34:38says, they will look on him whom they have pierced.
- 34:42And I believe that's from Zachariah 12, understand the
- 34:45perfect Lamb of God. Had to be without any blemishes
- 34:50the Old Testament sacrifices of land.
- 34:52You could not bring a mutilated a Mane And lamb the lamb had to
- 34:57be perfect. In Christ was the perfect Lamb
- 34:59of God so they could not break his legs and you all know they
- 35:04did not number nine, his clothes divided.
- 35:07This is an important one to it says they divided my garments
- 35:10among them and for all my clothing, they cast lat.
- 35:13So you have the prophecy here of the soldiers, dividing up, the
- 35:17close of the executed one. Now, this is one of the few
- 35:21events that all four gospels record about Christ.
- 35:26Crucifixion, Matthew Mark and Luke all say and they crucified
- 35:30him and divided his garments among them.
- 35:33Casting lots for them to decide what each would take, but John
- 35:38in John, 18 gives a little more information.
- 35:40It says, when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his
- 35:44garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each
- 35:48Soldier and also his tunic, but the tunic was seamless woven in
- 35:54one piece from top to bottom. So they said to one another, let
- 35:57us not tear it, but cast lots to see who it shall be.
- 36:03And then it says this was to fulfill.
- 36:07The scripture which says what's it?
- 36:09Say they divided my garments among them and for my clothing,
- 36:13they cast lots. So in your Bible, when you're
- 36:16reading, John 18 and you come to verse 24, there's probably a
- 36:20little space of white space right there.
- 36:22And then you have a verse that Psalms 22, verse 18, a direct
- 36:27quote, So, think about all the abuse that Christ suffered think
- 36:32of the emotions he suffered on the cross.
- 36:35You would think that the mother would get the clothes right.
- 36:38But no, the executed soldiers, that was kind of their bonus
- 36:42kind of their, their payment. They would get the close of the
- 36:46prophesied one. John MacArthur said, the
- 36:49strongest objective argument for the validity of scripture comes
- 36:55from Bible prophecy. And that's one of the reasons
- 36:58I'm A Christian today and these verses 11 to 18 are just
- 37:02stunning, when you look at them. All right.
- 37:04Let's move to point F. We got two more points.
- 37:06We got to hurry. By the way, I told Pastor Lance
- 37:09that some Easter you need to take this Psalm and preach a
- 37:13four-part series, because I'm going fast tonight, 31 verses,
- 37:17it's kind of insane to predict. Try to cover a song.
- 37:20We took seven verses last week. I'm trying to do 31 tonight, but
- 37:23Lord, willing, someday in the future on Easter.
- 37:26Lance can dig deeper and I'm going tonight.
- 37:28Christ. Application to God, verses 19 to
- 37:3021 to things. Strengthen me and save me verse
- 37:3419. He's on the cross.
- 37:36He says, but You O Lord be not far off from me.
- 37:39Oh you my help come quickly to my Aid?
- 37:41We know that Christ was abandoned by God for those three
- 37:44hours but many commentators here make the case that Christ might
- 37:48being abused by Satan here. Okay because it says that in
- 37:53Luke 22 53. Christ says, this is your hour
- 37:57and the power. Power of Darkness, I think Satan
- 38:01and his demons were rejoicing and celebrating those three
- 38:04hours of darkness and if he's in sixth end, 18 tells us that
- 38:08reverent would reference that all hell was gather around
- 38:11Christ on the cross. They thought they had the
- 38:13victory, didn't they? So he's crying out to God to
- 38:16strengthen him and then he's saying in verse 22, 21, save me.
- 38:20Okay, so he says he's asking to be delivered from the dogs here
- 38:25in verse 20 and 21. You have the metaphors again of
- 38:28a dog. A lion and a wild oxen Bulls
- 38:32lion and dogs are repeated again.
- 38:34That's how the enemies of Christ are described.
- 38:37Someone has said they possess the strength of the bowl, the
- 38:41power of the lion and the savagery of the Wild dog.
- 38:45That's how Christ's enemies are are described.
- 38:49And then, it says, so verse 21 Christ will be crying out.
- 38:51Rescue me from the Lions and the oxen.
- 38:54Some of you may still have the King James Bible.
- 38:56Anybody have the King James Bible here.
- 38:58Does it? Say unicorn.
- 39:00Yeah, it says unicorn in the King James Bible but most
- 39:03commentators now believe that this is not a unicorn that we
- 39:07think of some fantasy animal, but there actually was an animal
- 39:11that's extinct. Now, there's an animal, it's
- 39:13extinct, that's smaller than an elephant that actually has a
- 39:16horn. It was a vicious animal and a
- 39:18brutal animal. So it's a fitting description
- 39:22for the religious leaders, who I counted eight times in the
- 39:26gospels tried to kill Christ. But Finally, the our King and
- 39:31God allowed it to happen. So you have cried the prophecy
- 39:35here of Christ. Committing his life, to the
- 39:37father in Luke 23:46. Jesus, cried out in a loud
- 39:41voice. Father into your hands.
- 39:43I commit my spirit and having said this, he breathed the last.
- 39:48Let's look at the last point in the few minutes.
- 39:50We have I intentionally wanted to cover the first 21 verses to
- 39:55talk about the prophecies. So I'll go quickly on the Lex.
- 39:5810 verses, but this is the second section here.
- 40:02If the first 21 verses are a cry for help, then the next 10
- 40:06verses are a song of Praise. In fact, I believe praise is
- 40:10mentioned in verse. 22 verse 23, verse 25 and verse 26, we see a
- 40:17change from prayer to praise. You know we need to experience
- 40:23the bitterness of the Cross before we can truly and praise
- 40:26him, right? Because the Also Calvary, we can
- 40:30Praise Him. Hebrews 12:2 says for the joy
- 40:33that was set before him. He endured the cross Christ had
- 40:38Joy. Why knowing, because what he
- 40:40would accomplish on the cross. We can now talk about in these
- 40:44final versus the final verses anticipate, the preaching of the
- 40:48Gospel, which can only take place because what Jesus Christ
- 40:53did and they're in three groups. Number one, it's proclaimed to
- 40:56the Jews. Number two, its I'm to the
- 40:59Gentiles. And number three, it's
- 41:01proclaimed to a whole world. So number one Proclaim to the
- 41:04Jews. He says, in verse 22, I will
- 41:08tell of your name to my brothers, in the midst of the
- 41:11congregation. I will praise you.
- 41:15So it's the Risen Christ that's going to say.
- 41:18I will tell you Christ is going to lead lead a great Praise In
- 41:22The Great congregate in the great congregation.
- 41:25Now this will take place at the end of the tribulation going
- 41:28into the Kingdom and Christ says my brother's after the
- 41:32resurrection Jesus Christ was a preacher and a missionary.
- 41:36But how can Jesus speak two thousand years after this Psalm?
- 41:40Well, Paul says, in Ephesians 2 17 and he came and he preached
- 41:46peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near
- 41:50Jesus Christ. Never went to Ephesus to preach.
- 41:54So, what's that mean? Well, it means when Paul
- 41:56preaches or any preacher preaches, Today, he's preaching
- 42:00the word of God. Jesus Christ is speaking through
- 42:03his word, that gives you a great comfort in just about three
- 42:07weeks. Will he go into Argentina?
- 42:09And when we preach the gospel, Jesus is speaking.
- 42:13The holy spirit is with us, helping us preach.
- 42:16So the Risen Christ, will preach his gospel.
- 42:19And then points up to it to, to believing disciples in verse 23
- 42:24and 24. He's talking about the
- 42:27disciples, The Offspring of A come and and The Offspring of
- 42:31Israel. And you remember after Jesus
- 42:33rose from the dead, he was here on Earth for about 50 days.
- 42:37He only showed himself to believing disciples and in 1st
- 42:42Corinthians 15. He says even up to 500 people at
- 42:46one time. So believing disciples.
- 42:49So the gospel first, went to the Jews and Romans 1:16 says, I am
- 42:54not ashamed of the gospel for its, the power of God to
- 42:57Salvation for anyone who believes to the Jew first and
- 43:01then to the Gentiles. So the gospel was proclaimed to
- 43:04the Jews. You see that in Acts chapter 1,
- 43:07The Acts chapter 7, The Gospel exclusively for the Jews.
- 43:11And then you, then number point to Proclaim to the Gentiles in
- 43:14Acts chapter 8. The gospel goes to the
- 43:16Samaritans to the Ethiopian eunuch to the Roman Centurion
- 43:21and then it'll goes all over the Gentile world.
- 43:24So in verses, 25 to 29, Apostle Paul would try to take the
- 43:30gospel message to the Jews, but they would generally reject it.
- 43:34John, 1:11 said, Christ came into his own and his own people
- 43:38did not receive him. Paul would have some Jewish
- 43:41Believers, but not many. And so, then Paul would go to
- 43:43the Gentiles on for missionary Journeys.
- 43:46And the gospel would explode around the world.
- 43:49The psalm says, they're all in verse 27.
- 43:52All the ends of the Earth shall remember and turn Lord, all the
- 43:55families of the Nations. So worship before you, I Leave
- 43:58we have planted churches and all of the 194 countries of the
- 44:02world, some of those countries, the churches of the underground.
- 44:05But the psalmist says, there's going to be a great congregation
- 44:08from all the ends of the Earth and all the families of the
- 44:11Earth shall worship before Christ.
- 44:13Let's look at number three. It's going to be.
- 44:16This gospel is going to Proclaim to All Peoples, verse verse 30.
- 44:19And 31, I didn't mention that. I think the last four verses 28,
- 44:2429, 30 and 31. I believe the holy spirit is
- 44:28speaking. Being in these verses because he
- 44:29says he. But in verses 32 31, the gospel
- 44:34is going to be proclaimed. All Peoples.
- 44:37It says, in verse 29, all the prosperous of the earth and that
- 44:41says all shall bow down to him. So the holy spirit's describing,
- 44:45peace and prosperity, probably during the millennial Kingdom
- 44:48Here. Ultimately, and lots of things
- 44:51are going to go on there. They don't have time to go
- 44:52through poverty is going to be abolished the poor and Afflicted
- 44:55will eat and be satisfied, the Earth.
- 44:58Be filled with God's Praises, there will be a worldwide
- 45:01Revival. The ends of the Earth, will
- 45:03remember what Christ did at Calvary, the Lord himself will
- 45:06exercise worldwide domination. He will rule the Nations, but I
- 45:11want to finish the song tonight with the last five words and
- 45:14what powerful words they are that he has done it.
- 45:19This is the prophecy of the messiah's last words on the
- 45:22cross and most commentators say that the words that he has done.
- 45:28Done it have the same meaning as it is finished in John. 19:30,
- 45:36when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said it is finished.
- 45:41He bowed his head and gave up his Spirit.
- 45:44What a fitting conclusion of this song?
- 45:47They shall come and Proclaim his righteousness to a people yet,
- 45:50unborn, written 1,000 years before Christ's birth, that he
- 45:56has done it. What is he?
- 45:58Done. He has proclaimed the great work
- 46:03of redemption. A special message will be passed
- 46:07down from generation to generation.
- 46:09That Christ has finished the great work of redemption.
- 46:13Now, the Catholic Church would teach that that work is not
- 46:16finished, but the prophet David foretold it was and Christ
- 46:21himself said, it is finished. The satisfaction of Christ is
- 46:27the only satisfaction for sin. And is so perfect and final that
- 46:32it leaves no panel. Pineal liability for any sin in
- 46:36The Believer. And it makes me think of that
- 46:38great verse in Revelation chapter 7, verse 9 to 10 that
- 46:42says. After this I looked and behold a
- 46:45great multitude that no one could count from every nation
- 46:48from all the tribes peoples and language were standing Before
- 46:52the Throne and before the lamb clothed in white robes and with
- 46:57palm branches in their hands crying out with a loud voice.
- 47:00Salvation Belongs To Our God, who sits on the throne and to
- 47:04the lamb. So what do we learn tonight?
- 47:07Well, I just I'm just stunned by this song but it just makes me
- 47:12believe the Scriptures. It makes me want to share the
- 47:14scriptures. Many people have called Psalm
- 47:1722, The Fifth Gospel. I thought the book of Isaiah was
- 47:20the Fifth Gospel, but many commentators are saying, this is
- 47:23the Fifth Gospel. Messianic, Psalms like this one
- 47:27are prophetic revelation. Confirmed in the New Testament
- 47:31and you can go home and take that chart and look up the
- 47:34verses which I mentioned up to it.
- 47:36So it makes me believe the scriptures are the very living,
- 47:39active words of God. It makes me want to obey the
- 47:43scriptures when you see the Suffering.
- 47:45The Emotions, you know, you can read about Matthew, Mark, Luke
- 47:48and John and get the story, The Gospel, which, you know, and
- 47:51just, we just had Easter a couple months ago, but here I
- 47:54see the suffering in a new light, I see the suffering that
- 47:58my savior went through. And I need to die to sin and
- 48:02live for him. Galatians 2:20.
- 48:04It also reminds me that he will never, he was forsaken, will
- 48:08never forsake me Hebrews 13:5 and then it makes me want to
- 48:13share the scriptures more. I want to believe them or when
- 48:15it will bathe him more and want to share them more.
- 48:18I want to be part of bringing people that great congregation
- 48:21that these last few verses mentioned.
- 48:24And what do we tell him that? He has done it, that Jesus died
- 48:28on the cross for our Our sins was buried and rose from the
- 48:32dead and ascended, the right hand and then he's coming back
- 48:35next week. We're going to look at a Psalm
- 48:3850, the Judgment saw. So if people reject Jesus
- 48:42Christ, they're going to experience the Wrath and the
- 48:45Judgment. That Psalm 50 for takes.
- 48:47Let's pray, Father in Heaven, thank you for letting us just
- 48:50gloss over this wonderful Psalm but may we leave here tonight
- 48:53believing the scriptures believing that this song was
- 48:59written. In a thousand years before
- 49:01Christ would come and that Christ fulfilled.
- 49:04Many Psalms, I believe over 300 of them from his first coming
- 49:09from the Old Testament. It shows me that Jesus loved me
- 49:13so much that he would under intense suffering pain, in the
- 49:16most brutal form of execution, probably ever invented.
- 49:20Father, thank you for the love of Christ.
- 49:23Help us to live for you as we lift, leave here today, but
- 49:27father, especially whether it be in Argentina, whether be in our
- 49:30neighborhoods and our workplaces help us to share the great
- 49:33message that he has done it. That Jesus Christ has completed
- 49:39the work of redemption. And all we need to do now is
- 49:42believe in him receive him as Savior.
- 49:45Thank you may we share that message as we leave here tonight
- 49:48in Jesus name, amen.
